Alright anon, my apologies that it's been too long. I'm makin' some coffee, and we're doin' some damn tanks '89.

“Yeah. Garrison has always liked fuckin' with new people.” Anderson says with a grin as you explain to him what just happened.

“Could be worse, though. Could've been some fulda fucktard instead of a SOF general.” He shrugs. In all honesty, he's completely right. A conventional Army general probably wouldn't have pulled as much as he did from the line, which probably would've left this mission woefully understaffed.

“Yeah, you got me there. This the hangar?” you say as the Humvee pulls up.

“You got it, sir. Mind if I head in with you? I need to see what you got, make sure we're both up to speed here. Don't want my boys getting shot up by yours.” He asks, killing the engine and opening the door.

“Nah, no problem. I don't like getting ambushed by you ninja-types.” You reply, stepping in the side access door.

A blast of warm air hits you, followed by the stench of motor oil, propellent, and steel. Smells just like a motor pool, save for maybe the propellent. A group of huddled men crowd over a desk with a series of computer screens, oohing and aahing. Multiple Abrams and Leopard shells and casings are neatly organized behind a central area. Said central area is home to a 120mm Rheinmetall cannon on a testbed, pointed out towards the sea. A sea of thick cables run from the frame of the test carriage into a bank of computers behind the desk, which in turn has a series of monitors plugged into it.

You look at Anderson, who raises an eyebrow. He pulls his beret from his head before taking a few strides into the room. Stepping right behind the closest researcher, you can vaguely make out his conversation with the man.

“Whoooooa. What're we looking at here, boss?” He asks, peering over the man's shoulder.

The researcher sighs exasperatedly. “The latest kill data, of course. The new penetrators and network combat systems are working in concert flawlessly!”

“Network combat systems, eh? Whuzzat?”

“Yes! They're still highly experimental, but in unison with infantry on the ground and air support, it makes for the perfect ground combat capabilities! The infantry sees the target, paints it for the armor or air, who come in and kill it! You'd know that if you were paying attention during the briefing back in Virgina, you dolt. Captain Bishop is going to be thrilled with this!”

2/3
>>
Anderson looks back at you, flashes a grin, and turns back.

“You think so? Sounds like a bunch of untested shit that could cause casualties, to me. What happens if the network goes down and the infantry is left with it's ass in the breeze? Doesn't sound like that great of a system.”

The researcher whirls around, the words of his retort already forming before he sees exactly who he's looking at.

“Second Lieutenant Anderson! W...what are you doing here? We've already kitted you out!” He says, pushing his glasses up on his nose. The other men break from their workstation and turn as well, spinning quickly on their heels.

“Oh, you know. I like to drop in on my eggheads from time to time. Also, Captain Bishop needed a ride.” He motions to you. “He's still a little shellshocked from Garrison's briefing.”

The gaggle of engineers and scientists rush over to you, all seeming to want to shake your hand. You manage to catch two or three names before one really leaps out at you.

“Gentlemen, gentlemen, please, I'm sure I'll have ample time to meet all of you before we step. You, over there though, what was your name? Light?” You say, picking your way through the small crowd.

The stubby man smiles tiredly. He's almost certainly the oldest man here, white hair and beard surrounding his face. It's almost perfect camouflage with his lab jacket.

“Yes, captain, I am doctor Light. General Dynamics brought me on to work with the munitions team, but you don't want to hear all about that.” He waves the thought away with his hand. “We can get straight to business if you'd like.”

>[] “Wait, wait, where the hell do I know your name from?”

You stop mid step.

“Wait, why do I know your name?” You ask, extending your hand.

He graciously shakes it before answering. “Ah, so you've heard of the land warrior project too? They're calling it 'mega man' gear. How they came up with that name, I have no idea. Sounds like one of those Nintendo games my kids play.” He smiles and shrugs. “Shall we?”

Making sure to mind your footing while stepping over the thick bundles of cable, you and the good doctor make your way towards the testbed. He says something in thickly accented German to one of his colleagues, before answering a question in French to another.

“Alright captain, here's what we've come up with. There's not a whole lot of development going on in place of the gun itself, the 120mm Rhinemetall is about as good as you can get for a tank in the western world right now. However, it's ammunition is a completely different story.” He pats the gun as though it were a loyal steed before moving on to the shells to the sides.

“I'm sure you know well by know what the M829A3 SABOT and the M830 are capable of, especially in an anti armor role. However, you're limited to your coaxial gun and pintle mounts if faced with infantry. I posit the question of why? Why should we take one of the Abrams main strengths away from it?” He smiles warmly again before placing a hand on a short, stubby shell.

1/2
>>
“Why not use that strength to it's fullest ability? I'm sure you've heard of grapeshot, nasty stuff really. Well, we took the idea and yanked it up to 1989 standards. We're calling this the 'beehive', more formally the XM1029 canister shot.” He motions toward the computer.

He makes a couple of clicks with the mouse, where upon rows upon rows of data fill the nearest monitor. It might as well be martian to you, given how well you can interpret it.

“These, captain, are the projected success rates of the canister shot. As you can see by it's shot to success ratio against unarmored, or lightly armored targets, it's going to be incredibly effective. Second Lieutenant Anderson also proposed that it would make a good breaching system in the event of urban warfare.” Light continues, Anderson behind him nodding. You're just taking it all in.

“The network combat system, however, is something else. While it's not quite ready yet, we figured we ought to give you an idea of what you may be using in the future, especially now that you have organic infantry in your unit.” Doctor Light smiles and rests a hand on a small rectangular box. “Problems with the designator and antennae, I'm afraid. They don't like to be jostled too much right now.”

“However, we do have something else for you.” He reaches down towards a panel of solid boxes, each one individually small enough to be held by a man, but in the panel itself you imagine it's weight would require four men to lift. He picks up a single block before continuing his explanation.

>[] “go on?”

“Keep going, Doc. I'm just making mental notes here.” You say, crossing your arms.

Doctor Light smiles and continues “Just so you know, it doesn't really explode per-se. See, how it works is each block is a pair of spaced plates, holding an insulating gas inside, effectively acting as an open circuit. When it's engaged by a penetrator, the circuit closes and discharges it's energy, turning the penetrator to vapor or plasma. Considering true explosive armor's debut in the Somali-Ethiopian war, we've been working on something that can defeat tandem charges a little more readily, even if we still haven't cooked up a name. I like 'proto plating', but some of the others are incredibly droll and would like to name it 'electric reactive armor.'

“Of course, this really isn't something a witch could use, which is why we're working on something else for them. It's essentially the same concept, counter-engaging penetrators, but utilizing magic and inertial dampeners. We haven't gotten over the gee problem yet though...

If you'd like, we can your vehicle outfitted with the new plating by the time you step off. Just need you to sign off here.” He sets the block back in the panel before picking up a work order on a clipboard.

To the side, Anderson motions for you to speak to him.

You toss up a finger and step over to Anderson.

“What's up, el-tee?”

“Just wanted to let you know that there are three little girls outside, looking for you. I'm gonna go play offensive tackle, but I can only hold them for so long. Oh, and I was supposed to give you this. You earned it at Poznan.” He smiles and hands you a fresh green beret, sans unit crest. The all black flash, however, is intimidating enough as it is.

Stepping back over to doctor Light, who still has the clipboard in his hand you ponder out loud to nobody in particular, “Jee wiz, I sure hope none of this new stuff is harmful to our boys.”

The doctor, being the super genius he is, instantly picks up on it.

“Oh captain, I would've hoped you knew better by now. Since the open circuits can only be closed by means of kinetic penetrator, the plates themselves are incredibly safe. In the kill action, the only thing that could be of harm to your troopers outside of armor are what's left of the munition that discharges the blocks themselves. The armor itself is perfectly harmless to any infantry on the outside.” He smiles.

“Now, if we can get this work order in, we can go about getting your vehicles outfitted before all of you leave me.” He thrusts the clipboard into your hands.

>[] Sign it!

You quickly sign the work order and hand it back to Light. “If you'll excuse me, Doctor, I've got to go meet and integrate my new....soldiers.” You manage to spit the word. While Ooishi and Rockfield haven't been a problem (quite the opposite, in fact), the 'german ho incident' as termed by Nicky and thus, the company, has left quite a bad taste in your mouth. You know it's not really fair to say all witches are like that, but it's generally easier to assume.

You step out in time to see Anderson finish adjusting a young, brown haired witches salute, turning her upper arm parallel to the ground.

“God damn, sir. They don't even teach how to salute properly at the academy anymore.” He says and shakes his head. “Whatever though. They're your problem now.”

The three witches there look at you expectantly, hoping you'll return the salute so they can stop holding the unfamiliar pose. The blonde, definitely the oldest of the group manages to hold attention, while the one of the others is having a hard time standing still. None of them say a word.

“Well? You three have something for me?” You ask, crossing your arms. This is definitely the first time you've had to ask people to present themselves to you.

“Sargeant Danielle Rosalez reporting for duty, sir!” The blonde belts out, followed by corporals Mary Patterson and Alexandra Siegel.

“Out-fucking-standing. Is there a reason the three of you are standing here in front of me, and are not at the unit's billet?” You ask, returning the salute. All three of them drop theirs almost instantly. The third, a white haired witch, pipes up.

“Sir, if I may be excused, Lieutenant Anderson has a briefing for me. I'm his armor augmentee from the 803.”

“Wait a second, a briefing? I'm going to venture to assume it's the same one I just got, but did the three of you just get here?” You say, looking up at Anderson, who nods. “Also, did you say you were from the 803?”

She sighs and drops her shoulders. “Yes sir. THAT 803. That's why I'm Anderson's and not yours directly.”

You don't know much about the 803 special operations group, or even if it's an army unit. You know they fall under USSOCOM, and that they're responsible for quite a few raids and clandestine operations, but past that not a whole lot. Even for Anderson, this witch is going to be quite a handful.

“Alright, fine. Where's your striker unit?” You ask, wanting to know everything you can before dismissing her.

She casually points to a black set of M3's, no doubt tricked out with all sorts of high speed gear that makes it quite a bit different from Ooishi's. There's that and it's painted black, as opposed to every other striker you've seen. Currently, they're lashed to a flatbed parked in your billet. Company technicians work to free them to be offloaded into the motor pool.

“That it, sir?” She asks nonchalantly. “It was a long flight from Bragg. I'd like to get some sleep.” The other two witches nod in agreement.

“Yeah, that's all I've got for you. Go be Anderson's problem for a while.” you dismiss Siegel, before turning to the other two. “You two hungry? We just got off the plane ourselves, we can probably run into most of the unit at the chow hall making asses of themselves.”

Their eyes light up at the mention of food. “Absolutely, sir!” Patterson says, looking around for...well, something. Probably the DFAC, but who can tell with children?

It's a short walk to the dining facility, who are serving a Tarte Flambee as lunch. The penetrators are loving just about every second of it, almost out eating the kitchen's production.

Nicky sees you enter, and almost breaks his neck calling the group to attention and trying to run to you. “SIR! YOU GOTTA TRY THIS STUFF, IT'S OUT GODDAMN STAND- Who're they?” He asks, looking at Rosalez and Patterson. Almost the instant he asks, the whole dining facility goes quiet. Given that it's almost exclusively penetrators save for a few others here and there, it's no small feat. Tankers get rowdy, often. Even the few new additions from Anderson's group have their eyes fixed on the two witches.

“Well, I'm glad to see I have your attention, Penetrators. Take your seats, this is Sargent Rosalez and Corporal Patterson. From my understanding and their orders papers, they're a pair of new additions to the unit. That means they're under you, Rockfield.” You look at the dark skinned witch, who nods. “Alright gentlemen, as you were.”

The second the word 'were' leaves your mouth, the chow hall devolves into barbarism once again. Rockfield and Ooishi are quick to get to the new witches before they're swarmed with questions, and manage to guide them back to safe seats near a window.

You watch to make sure that your new girls get to their table in one piece, which under Rockfield's wing they do, though a few pieces of flying food had to be deflected beforehand.

You somehow manage to get to the table Nicky is at, despite the fact that the chow hall is doing it's best Valhalla impression, maybe sans drinking. You're not sure you've ever seen the boys worked up like this, even back when you were breaking all the rules and going to bars with them. Thank God you never got caught, there would've been hell to pay for that.

After gathering your own plate and a Coke, you join your tank crew. Hans and Michael are working on Mega's German, though when he started to learn that you have no idea. He seems to be coming along quite well, already having mastered the common phrases he'd need, such as 'Excuse me, where is the restroom?', 'Is that your girlfriend or your dog?', and 'No, YOUR mother is a whore!'. You couldn't be more proud.

Nicky, who has a plate with a mountainous pile of Tarte Flambee in front of him, grins as you sit. “You gotta try this stuff, cap. I dunno who came up with it, but I want to kiss them. Even if they are a hairy frog.” He bites into a large piece, crunching away happily.

I guess a better metaphor would be a teacher fucking their student, but the point is that fraternization is a BIG no-no for a multitude of reasons not the least of which is the inherent power imbalance of the relationship. No, but the rules don't make exceptions for good people. If they did it'd be too easy for dicks to slip through the cracks. The rule may cause us no end of heartbreak, but if we fall for one of our Witches, as an officer of the United States Armed Forces, we will have to hold ourself to loving her in secret from afar, until such time as we are no longer within their chain of command. To do otherwise would be to do her a disservice.

“You uh, you hear any new rumors?” You ask, around a mouthful of what amounts to French pizza nachos.

Nicky shakes his head. “Nah, nothing new or exciting. No new mail either, I don't think they diverted it here for us yet. All I really know is that our witches are going to have a hell of a time out in the middle east. I know how they treat their witches, but I have no idea how they're going to treat ours.

“What I can say is this, though. I'm really, really not looking forward to being in the desert. Woods are my thing.” He takes another large bite.

You shrug. “Hell if I know, Nicky. Hopefully they'll get the respect they deserve, even if they aren't part of the royal family. They're still witches, and it's not like we're going to be there politically too. Kinda like a line in the sand...one that Saddam can't cross.

“Speaking of DO NOT CROSS, did you manage to see that Siegel?”

“Sir, I see a lot of seagulls. This base is closer n' hell to the Atlantic.”

“No no, you big dummy. Siegel, a witch from the 803.”

“Oh. Then in that case, no. Wait, she's from the 803rd? Aren't they like, General Lindsay's go to girls? Pardon the language sir, but the fuck is she doing here?” He asks, a quizzical look on his face. He's even set down his food for this, it must be really groundbreaking.

Your turn to shake your head. “Hell if I know, man. I'm a little surprised that SOCOM let her go, especially now. Wouldn't this be the time that those killers are out doing bad things?

first- saging cos this is kinda offtopic and an infodump.

second: Saudi witches are adopted into the royal house once their powers manifest. thus, all Saudi witches are royalty.

In practice, this effectively means they're treated very well, better than most other nations, in fact- and all but ensures their loyalty to the king.

it also means that yes, every single Saudi witch is a princess.
>>
>>22423671
saging for something IRL related, the saudi royal family IRL is absurdly large as is, so this is actually very realistic.

>[] Yeah.

“You know, now that you mention it, that is a little off, isn't it?” you ask, stopping to ponder for a second. Nicky was right. How did a second lieutenant, probably just out of college and training, manage to pull all those strings? Especially to get an upstrength armor platoon with witches pulled off the line, out from under a full bird colonel.”

You lean back to think for a moment. Nicky kind of gives you the 'I told you so' face, and keeps stuffing his pie hole. “Eat up Nicky, I have no idea what we'll be eating out there.” you say, dismissing yourself.

“It was fun, gents, but I have a second lieutenant to go hunt down.”

Hans and Mega both nod to you, still pouring over the primer. Nicky just waves like an idiot.

The chaos dies almost instantly the second you step out of the chow hall, and outside you're met with running soldiers from other nations, rifle fire out at the range of troopers keeping as sharp as possible before their deployment, and aircraft constantly landing and taking off. It seems that the base has kicked into high gear. Maybe your deployment is a little closer than you think?

Heading into your billet, you notice the swarm of techs over Booze Hound and your other three tanks, Mister Fister, Sweet Thang, and Old Hand, all having their new armor suites installed. Four sets of Strikers, three Abrams and an M3 are being gone over with fine tooth combs, mechanics and technicians trying their damndest to sandproof the fine inner workings. On the other hand, the black special forces striker is being tended only by Siegel, with Anderson going over her M4, making sure it's got all the neat toys his does on it.

Seigel notices you approaching and immediately snaps to attention.

>[] “as you were, as you were. I need to steal your gunsmith for a few minutes.”

You wave your hands in front of you. “No no, as you were. I just need to see Anderson for a few minutes.” Siegel dives back into her striker, elbow deep in mechanical gearing, turning some variety of wrench.

Anderson snaps the receiver halves of Siegel's rifle back together before jumping to his feet and following you outside. You step around the corner from the open motor pool so that there's no chance anyone could walk up on you or overhear you mistakenly before you ask Anderson anything.

“Alright el-tee, we got some things we need to talk about.” You start. Before you can get any further, Anderson stops you.

“I know where this is going, sir. General Garrison and I already went over this, and the answer is no. I'm not anything more than a lowly lieutenant out of tenth special forces. My ODA got really lucky to get this assignment, and I don't know how we did it, especially since the middle east is fifth group. Garrison asked me if I knew anyone who knew armored warfare really well, and my first thought was Jakepants' Penetrators. That's why you got pulled here.” He shakes his head.

“That doesn't explain the witch from eight oh three being here, lieutenant. That's JSOC, man. They're raiders and killers, aren't we going to teach?” You ask, trying hard not to press the special forces man too far.

Anderson simply shrugs. “Why don't you ask her, Captain? I didn't even know we were getting a witch punched in with us until a few hours ago. If we're done here?” You nod. “Good, I gotta go finish with her rifle. I don't think she's ever had someone go through her gear like this.” He steps back into the hangar before motioning Siegel toward you. She sets her wrench down and cleans the grease and oil off her hands before walking over.

“Yes, Captain?”

“Alright miss Siegel, you get to explain something to me now. You said you're from the 803rd? What are you doing here, shouldn't you be with your unit? I was led to believe that this is a teaching mission, not a raid or anything like that.” You ask, making sure not to be overbearing.

Her eyes flash, and she cocks an eyebrow. “Captain. You know full well I can't discuss what the 803 are doing with anyone other than someone with full TSI-2 security clearance. I don't mean to offend you sir, but that is something you do not have. As to why I'm here? You never know when shit will hit the fan.” She smirks and rubs some of the oil out from under one of her fingernails. “But I’m sure you'll be glad I'm around if it does.”

You're not sure if she's being condescending or just naive. You do know that you don't care much for her attitude, regardless of how correct she may or may not be.

“Corporal Siegel, under no circumstances will you tell me the operations of the 803rd SOG. I asked for the details as to why you are here, in my unit, under my command. You need to square away the attitude as of yesterday.”

She looks a little taken aback. Siegel snaps to attention, balling her rag up in her fist. “Yes sir!” she replies, ready for the drill yard. Whatever they teach these girls in q course, it sticks with them. “Sir, I have been augmented to ODA 0111A as a technical weapons and close combat instructor for operation ready scimitar!”

Wait, what other fiction has had the piledriver in it besides All You Need Is Kill?

That's what you were after initially, but you really weren't looking for the drill square routine. Shit.

“Corporal, I'm not a hardass. I'm not a rude or mean man. Our whole philosophy here is that if you do your job, and everyone else does theirs, we'll all be alright and get out alive. That's all I'm worried about. Relax.” You reply.

She looks you in the eyes, then drops her shoulders. “Yes sir. I guess..I guess I'm not used to being asked questions as to why I'm doing something. It's just something I'll have to adjust to.”

You nod, informally dismissing her. She picks up her wrench, and dives back into her striker.

As you step back around the corner, you find yourself facing your gunner.

“Hey captain, uhm. Deployment just got moved up. We're going right in the damn middle, the French are loading up right now. Gives us about eight hours from now.” He hands an Arabic primer and a Saudi culture textbook to you. “Dunno why, nobody said. Just to make sure the company is up to speed.”

You can't help but wonder why the order came down to move now. There's no way Saddam and the Iraqi's pushed across the Saudi border, you'd have heard about that on one of the many radios broadcasting news all over the base.

Either way, you find yourself checking to make sure Booze Hound is ready for the desert. The technicians are just now finishing up installation of your new armor, with Michael and a few ordinance techs running through the loads that'll be flown over for you.

I was talking about the witch tank. It's bad. I mean, look at the left plate. They left the (oh shit, what is that) Uh... barbette(?) on the armor, which means the first hit it takes, that is going to fold in half like something that folds in half really easily. And those back toes are really terrible. And they leave so much superfluous metal in there.
