Electing not to join your advisors so soon after the cryptic and contradictory offers of judgment and favor alike from the Outer Court, the Black Thane stands in the court room as your eyes amidst the mortal rulers of your Duchy. His bloodied filth and neglected disarray, fallen snow and all, disturbs them, but they do not object.

"One act of justice, and all the old grudges of the duchies spill forth into the light. I did not think I would live to see the day. I always thought this would fall to my son, or his. Or his."

On the table is spread a map.

King died. His council gathered and decided to get some Necromancer to raise a past king of great renow.

It did not work exactly as planned, the Necromancer asked you - the recently raise not-quite-the-guy-they-wanted to shut up and play along and you slowly got the kingdom and your skeletal form back on its feet.

Currently we're a skeleton in blue velvet with a chest full of blooming white roses and a red one in place of our heart. Because why the fuck not.

And we're at war with some cunts.

"After the conquest of Zlatan was settled, I familiarized myself with its history and libraries. There is writing from before Unification that alludes to the sword of Zlatan's rule -- the snake on its hilt, specifically -- being enchanted so as to 'bite the hand of all but its rightful wielder.' It is perfectly possible that such an enchantment was lost to history."

She swallows. "It, ah. It is even possible that the late Duchess and her court did not know the stanza meant magic, if they knew the tale at all. It is nearly as old as Zlatan itself."
>>

I could be wrong. It's been probably over a year and a half since that happened.

The Wizard looks as if he is about to object, but the anger fades from his face and his grip on the Witch's hair eases.

"Thank you. Now, with Liuva gone we must think to what is best for our kingdom. The peasantry are already in despair at having an immortal symbol of prosperity buried in his own garden, and the nobility are already raising their hackles at the prospect of submitting to rule by committee once more -- there are already whispers of seeking out our neighbors to offer services as banner houses."

The Wizard interrupts her report with the impatience of an ignored child, flailing his robes arms. You sense a deadening of the energies that usually crackle and sting the unseen senses.

"Right, right, right. Crops and wheels and dirt. Aaaaall that thrilling stuff. I don't suppose there's anything that would require the touch of, by chance, one of the most powerful practitioners of the third empty hand? Maybe? Perish the thought that the very pillars of worldly law and natural order might be an impediment that COULD be overcome."

He crosses his arms.

"I wonder, where could such a creature be, who could so skillfully cast off the chains of mortal means? If only there were a fellowship for these people, and a word for their profession, and a member of them in CLOSE PROXIMITY. Maybe he's too busy having to tinker with charms and sigils and other menial works!"

>The Wizard is Bored.
>The Wizard has a chance of ignoring orders.
>>
>>22361642

We should probably heal the necromancer. He really did try his best.

The steward about the economic implications of our sea access and about posibly extending our lawmen-system into the recent additions of our kingdom.
The captain and the dictator of the political and military possibilities and problems that come with it.

Wizards apprentice to deal with the weather to ensure spring

Wizard to create the biggest flashiest light show ever for a celebration of spring involving much booze and wenching.
>>
>>22361779
Can we set the Wizard on creating creatures of some sort? Not a golem like last time, but something to supplement our forces?
Winged terrors of the night, succubi, whatever.
>>
>>22361779
Oh shit, Wizard is bored.

"Might i remind you that you choose to do those menial works yourself?"

Do we still have this magical barrier spell around our country? It is very important now that our forces are stretched thin...

Anyone got a suitable grand idea to keep the wizard occupied?
>>
>>22361836
I think he likes stuff that's more of a challenege. Sparks are parlor tricks. Weather control machines? Golems made of blood and roses? Cursing the everloving shit out of an entire country?

That's more up his alley. We should probably find some gran undertaking for him.
>>
>>22361814
GET THE DICTATOR TO TELL US WHAT THIS WAR IS ABOUT, WHY IT STARTED AND WHOS AT WAR WITH WHOM! This has priority ultima!
>>
>>22361870
On that note, where the fuck is our golem?
>>
>>22361779

If we have a trade fleet of some sort, he might want to do some weather magic and get it to cross the waters quickly? (and meet exotic women in close-yet-distant-enough-lands while he's at it). I mean, usually travelling by sailship means that you'll have to sit and wait for the turn of seasons, but him being powerful as fuck, he could certainly fix that.

We could certainly use some of that income if there's really a war coming. And maybe he thinks that's a challenge worthy of his?
>>
>>22361891
The golem can be summoned. It lives in our head... or at least that's where he was. It seems to be a WMD that we can just drop when we feel like it.

Wizard. You are a problem solver.

We are at war. This is a problem.
Solve it.
>>
>>22361929
I'm almost tempted to go with this.

I'm just afraid it'll be an Ender's solution (if we are lucky).
>>
>>22361929
Just give him free reign to think up of possible solutions and then come to us with three things that he thinks will be useful and we tell him to work more on one thing.

It'd be better if we give him the opportunity to do research and work that interests him.
>>
We could let the wizard build another long ranged Weapon of mass destruction. Magical ICBMs or something... Or rather a big magical focus tower that allows him to flashfry units of troops invading our country by the dozens.

Okay. Proposed courses of action:

We heal Necromancer
Thane to be on standard Bodyguarding duties
Captain to continue Recruiting
Dictator to strengthen our ties to Hildefons and Gailavira
Necromancer to recieve lovely Get Well Soon cards and fruit baskets
Oracle: Query about War, Query about Threats
Steward to focus on reducing Unrest
Wizard... We decided not to do the "Set All Invaders on Fire" thing, and had him make the Golem instead, right? Maybe he will still find that as fun as it thought it last time.

might as well bring it up. Could we combine it with a teleport to let him rain fire down on our enemies?
Teleporter should be brought up first though.
>>

Okay. Placing more emphasis on the screaming doom it will bring to invaders.
>>
>>22362059

Addind to this. We could make it flashy as fuck for the Wizard.

Make the teleported units appear with thunders and lightning to spread terror amongst our enemies.
>>
>>22362040

yeah, that wasn't about challenge, that was about him setting up for an awesome party with all the beer and women he could handle.

The Black Thane projects his voice into your mind. "If you must know, my liege, I killed the man who offered you the sword, the woman it belonged to, her three sons, and all who attempted to prevent me from slaying any of them."

The Dictator adds -- apparently the Thane told that to all present -- that, "The Duchess's only daughter, barely a woman, survives. She serves as the mistress of Zlatan keep, and Viscountess of its lands while under our rule. Your guardian, in total, took nine lives. The Duchess, her sons, the High Captain, two ducal guardsmen, a nobleman, and his son."

He continues. "It did not 'start' the war. If anything, what started the way was the capture of the Oracle and the revelation that it was an unjust conspiracy. As to their motives, I cannot say, as, well ... the Duchess is dead."

>>22361072
The Captain looks up. "I exaggerate, my lord. Do not worry about the specifics of my office, only know that our armies are wanting."

>>22361195
>>22361595
>>22361890
The Dictator adds to the Captain's thought. "But Tautila, itself, is not at war. Heva, the kingdom, is breaking down into a state where many long-buried rivalries are coming to a head. It appears our ... 'initiative' may have inspired imitators of the aggression. Most notably Vesna and Svarog, who are the only two duchies of the seven in open conflict ... well, six, with Zlatan under our banner. Though we have no open aggressors, success in the field may make tyrants of men."

>>

Counterproposal

We wait until we get some more information.

Other than with healing the Necromancer. And maybe set up a bodyguard service to attend our councilmen- and women when they move into the field in the future. They are too shy to ask for it on their own.
>>
>>22362247
Seconding this. Troubling times are on us. None of our good men (and women) should be in danger of suffering a bandit attack, or worse.

If the Oracle could be kidnapped, who knows who else may be targeted later.
>>
>>22362247

Iunno man. That seems to pretty much be the report for the season done.

For the moment, it doesn't seem like we are under immediate threat. I'd really rather get that unrest down and our forces back up to strength.

In summer, we can have the Steward and the Thane recruit a lawmen unit and train it up for bodyguarding duties. Worked pretty well for the Dictator's underhand.
>>
>>22362240
We should try to gain an alliance with Hildefons. If i remember right they were the altruistic ones. If we can form a power block of Tautila, Hildefons and Gailavira (half the duchies) i am pretty optimistic about weathering this war.
>>
>>22362210
>He continues. "It did not 'start' the war. If anything, what started the way was the capture of the Oracle and the revelation that it was an unjust conspiracy. As to their motives, I cannot say, as, well ... the Duchess is dead."

How about asking the Oracle herself? It's just a regular question, she's certainly not going into trance over it or anything.
>>
>>22362331
I doubt she knows. I suspect she was only captured so she didn't spoil the plans.
>>
Maybe we should send the dictator to talk to the people of Zlatan. The death of almost the entire royal family must be a huge hit to their morale.

I also kinda feel bad for the daughter, she lost her family and now she has the weight of the duchy on her shoulders. Maybe it's a bad idea, but we should apologize.
>>
>>22362365

I think we never bothered with Necromancy ourselves, right? No no way we could just do what necromancers do and ask the dead themselves?
>>
>>22362322
Adding to that: There are six duchies: We, Gailavira and Hildefons in a mutual defensive alliance, Vesna and Svarog at war. If we can keep duchie number six out of the war between Vesna and Svarog this war will likely be over as soon as the two of them settle their differences.
>>
That teleportation business sounds right up his alley and hard to boot. Might even make it so we won't have to use an advisor for all season tasks. And a portal into Zlatan Keep would keep the new Vicountess loyal if she knew we could pop in at any moment and BLOOD GOLEM EVERYTHING.

So teleportation for the wizard, specifically between Zlatan Keep and say, a military fort we have,. And if he has the time, bitchin fireworks.

Ask the Oracle who are most dangerous foes will be and/or what theatens Tautila the most?

I second bodyguards for everybody who goes out.
>>
two extreme options we should consider:
a) do nothing about the war.
b) through diplomacy and battle, take over Heva.
>>
[ Okay, well, let's start eliminating some of these. ]

Assuring those present, you tell a servant to have the Necromancer well-fed and clean-clothed in preparation for a healing.
>You decide you will heal the Necromancer.
>The Necromancer is unavailable.

At all the talk of disruption and uncertainty, the Steward nods before you even tell her what to do. "I understand, my lord. The calm and comfort of our people is paramount if we are to keep things from fraying further beyond our control. I will visit the nobility personally and try to assume them that there is no cause for alarm or disloyalty."
>You decide the Steward will focus on morale.
>The Steward is unavailable.
>>
>>22362365

Talking about her... telling her to go on her usual walkabouts or otherwise granting other courts access to her services again might not be the worst idea.
>>
>>22362391
Not apologizing, we were in the right in this war, and they did treacherously fake their surrender to get a shot at the duke, as far as we know.

It is still a good idea to work on the integration of Zlatan into Tautila. The more we show them that we care for them the faster and easier the transition will be.
>>
>>22362331
The Oracle nods sullenly, willing but loathe to remember her time in Zlatan's prisons.

"From what I gathered, the Zlatan were unaware that your suspicions had already been raised toward them, and ... well, they took a ... -risk-," she says, disgusted to refer to herself as an asset, "by capturing me, hoping that it would obscure their hand in Tautila's earliest troubles, but actually giving away their intent."
>>
>>22362455

If it's currently not endangering us directly, we would do well to use this chance to reinforce our own position.

I mean, we've conquered a kingdom and we have that magical item most relevant to its succession (and our door to another realm) still rotting in our garden. At least sent somebody to pick it up and put it into storage.
>>
>>22362486

It's not obvious whether the enchantment on the sword was readily apparent to them.

I agree on the annexation though. We should also definitely make an appearance to the people next season.
>>
>>22362459
The wizard works on the teleportation thingmajing

We ask the oracle about the war and about something else.

The dictator is sent to Hildefonz to diplomance them into a at least defensive alliance, if possible. Also make him suggest a council between Hildefonz, Gailavira and Tautila.

The Black Thane guards.

The Captain recruits.
>>
>>22362528

I'm gonna keep pushing about asking the Oracle about the nature of that enchantement. We know about its function for that house now, but nothing else. Hopefully it's more than just a mcguffin to introduce us to the other court.
>>
>>22362486
>>22362391
The Dictator rubs his beard. "Such altruism may work in our favor, my lord, or ... if you will permit me a more shrewd mind -- a young ruler is a ruler most easily swayed."
>The Dictator may take a diplomatic action to former Zlatan.

>>22362425
>>22362322
A tap of his cane on the ground. "Quite right, though. We do need to stand fast with our true friends, or make those friendships into stronger bonds."
>The Dictator make take a diplomatic action to Hildefons.
>>
>>22362526
I think we should focus on sorting the Zlatan problematic out. I want that territory integrated into Tautila so hard that noone even remembers how we got it. Everything else is secondary.
>>
>>22362596
This course of action is completely useless, since last thread mentioned that the curse on the sword completely unraveled when the Duke awoke again. The sword is just a pretty sword.
>>
>>22362605

>>
>>22362719

I think we're gonna be busy this season healing up the Necromancer.
>>
>>22362699
We can use that.

Be totally genial, but a little overbearing and oblivious to any nervousness she displays. Mention wanting to visit her more often, literally pat her on the back or hold her shoulder, have a portrait of us and her commissioned and hung next to her throne.

We should be giving a thumbs up in the painting, of course.
>>
>>22362719

I would assume that she wasn't present at the slaughter.

I assume this because she is still alive.
>>
>>22362738

Eh, we can talk to Hildefons next season. There's no rush. Send him to Zlatan.

It's fair to assume that we should get our own shit in order before dealing with the rest of the world.
>>
How much food does Zlatan have? We have plenty. If they are short, give them some to win over the people.
>>
>>22362747
I am not entirely convinced this is a good idea.
>>
>>22362605
>>22362605
Dip. action to former Zlatan would increase the power of Tautila, but it may also stretch our patrols' too thin to protect. However, Hildefons is the altruistic one, so perhaps a display of altruism may assist in a deal for alliance. Therefore, I would support the dip. action to Zlatan.

For the others... I don't suppose that the Captain needs to convert one of the standing troops in lawmen, to cover Zlatan?

You resolve to bring light into some of the mysteries troubling you, and the Oracle is called forward. She has no attendants, and instead carries a closed censer that swings slowly from side to side. The shutter lifts with a burst of pale cloud, wafting upward slowly like morning fog across her features.

>You query the Oracle about war.
"So many scabbards, with gauntlets gripping the deadly steel within. But who will draw forth a shining mirror, and who will bring only rust?"

Ah... ah. Okay. All the same, the item is politically relevant. We should have it restored and have somebody else respectfully bear it during our future official functions.
Remember that we're a freaky skeleton. It's always better to imply that we don't consider ourselves the rightful ruler of the living even though we're going to fulfill that function for that newly conquere kingdom for now on.
Could also work to imply that the other guys might inherit both kingdoms as skeletons can't get the type of boners required for heir and... our own kingdom's line is dead.

That plus the Thane's actions should be enough to keep those recent additions to the ranks of our nobles in line.
>>
>>22362791
Okay, that sounds ominous.

What duchy could be meant... I am assuming both Hildefons and Gailavira should be prepared for war. They were on our side in the war against Zlatan, it should be safe to assume that they beefed up their war machine for that.

The two duchies currently at war should both be reasonably prepared, too, but this is less certain.

Maybe the sixth one?

Hum. This will be.. interesting.

I don't that refers to Zlatan, since it's being converted into Tautilan territory. Our allies probably aren't it, either; they are prepared for war between us and Zlatan, in the event the war dragged them into it, I would think. Neither of the two warring duchies, maybe. The monarch, then?

Actually, since Vesna's ambassadors were recalled, along with their attendants, that may suggest that Vesna is the unprepared one - though that possibility is only probably if they were attacked, rather than the attacker.

>The curse had an ancient history, and its origin should be feared.
...Should that be a joint Wizard and Witch project? That sounds disturbingly ominous.

Captain can handle recruiting. Maybe the Thane can handle training our current standing troops.

The wizard is bored, so he might ignore our orders. We should make him do something exciting.

I don't think research is exciting in his head. The witch can do some research, since she seems to have some knowledge tucked away. The wizard can, uh.. I dunno, throw a party for the people.

So we'd better assume guardianship over both the realm and the heir, as cruel as that might be. Her running off/being carried off could plunge us into another war too soon.
>>
>>22362960
Captain should recruit, train. Thane's with us and the wizard should work on the teleporter to Zlatan.
>>
>>22362960

Captain I think should continue his work bringing our military back up to strength. More recruitment.

Wizard, I say we give him the option of doing a teleporty thing, or that CIRCLE OF FLAMING DEATH over the country which we were talking about earlier but then decided against in favour of Golem. Giving the man choices can't hurt.

Thane can bodyguard us for the season.
>>
>>22362960
Thane, go with the Captain to train the soldiers we have. The Thane is the fist, and the Captain the soothing glove.

The wizard needs something to do. Something to keep him occupied, relieve his boredom, lest he gets anxious. We can't offer him some banal task, or he won't do it. Not right now at least. No agriculture, no love. It needs to be destructive at least, nightmarish preferable. Even he if works on something we never need, it will keep him occupied.

So do not be afraid of death when deciding whether to enlist. Dying for your home is not the worst thing that could happen to you. I should know, I've done it several times."

The lack of non-bastard heirs, actually. (Why do you think we need a male? The Duchess of Zlatan proves that the kingdom doesn't recognize patrimonial succession only.) The Steward is a descendant of a bastard from the Duke's nephew. We could legitimize her, possibly. She should be married (and with child, hopefully), before we do that though.

As to the new Viscountess, she is still young.

while all that is being done, if i may propose a future action, i believe the institution of a central bank would do wonders to spur commerce and trade, and also facilitate greater development of the country through investment schemes.

historically speaking, finance was definitely a novel concept, and as such represented a power vacuum that was filled by whoever got the bright idea first. unfortunately for societies world wide, this was very often privately interested people and organisations, whos influence through both simple power of wealth, and ownership of debt, was of course, considerable, be it legal or illegal, commoner, or noble.

there are many examples of this, the rise (and fall due to aristocrats spiteful of their power) of the templars through their banking system, the borgia families financial cartel in italy, and most famously, the rothschild ownership of the bank of england.

under national control, such a service would mean that taxes would no longer be completely necessary as the sole source of treasury income, thought taxes themselves are still useful as a means of influencing the market (eg, a land tax for instance encourages development of land by owners). trade would be improved as merchants have less fear of robbers due to not having to carry their money physically. we can pursue developmental ventures outside our existing means with no issue, as long as a return on the investment is made eventually to keep the system running. and of course, the incredible influence that comes from ultimately owning all the money in the kingdom, many a monarchs downfall was precipitated in some manner in history through either debt slavery, or bankruptcy, and someone wanting to collect.

A multitude of ideas swirl chaotically about in your skull.

>You query the Wizard about teleportation.
"Hnh. Looking to move quickly and discreetly, milord? I can see how that would come in handy. Such a thing is not done lightly. There are ... tolls ... to be paid, if one wishes to step outside the mortal realm and intends to return."

>The Wizard may create an unlit passage.

>You query about the sword.
"Old magic. A curiosity. Much of the old ways were lost since before the towers of my order rose, and fewer still are those who can work them. I am not a smith, but even if it was laid on the sword at Zlatan's birth, the curse itself -- or at least, its discovery -- is a thing that predates the Blind Age.

>The Wizard may research the curse.

>You query about the Ur-Flesh.
The Wizard peers at you in silence. The others present seem to regard the phrase as a nonsense word. "I would ask how you came to know that Name, but I get the feeling, milord, that you'd be hard-pressed to understand how you learned it yourself ... Perhaps we should talk, when you deem it so."

addenum, it also means that major transactions will now be possible, again without having to physically cart money from place to place, which was also a major factor in economical development through banks.

by being pioneers in this field, we would need not have to even invade other countries in order to benefit from them. when a commoner sees foreign troops marching through, he feels rightly incensed at the intrusion, but foreign merchants setting up shop (ventures the commoner himself might work at), its business as usual. any king would be rightly outraged if you demand tribute by threat of force, but when he has a loan from you, honor demands repayment in some way.

[ Just to make it clear, I'm not literally -opposed- to what you're saying. But you have to appreciate the scale here. Everything being said in these indicated posts is flavor. All of it. Do you know what these say, in game terms?

>You decide the Steward will focus on trade.

The Dictator covers finance, but the system of purchases and commerce has fallen by the wayside temporarily because I'm trying to -- for the moment -- focus on what to do instead of how well to do it. Some of the older posters may have noticed an absence of;

>Tautila is provided for. (You may make three major purchases a season.)

That is the beginning and end of finance in Heva. How many purchases you can make. Currency, minting, banking, stamping, etc, that is all flavor. Want to make a rival nation poorer by fiddling with tariffs? That's just an "espionage action." That's what that is.

I appreciate your enthusiasm, but there is a place for that that level of detail. This game is not it. ]

>It is the 304th year After Unification.
>It is summer.

Throughout Spring, your public return from the grave is met with celebration usually reserved for festivals and solstices. The keep is opened to all manner of merchants and peddlers and performers -- all thoroughly examined by the Dictator and the Black Thane for any possible sign of danger -- and smooth beads made from the shards of your coffin are handed out to children as baubles, and used to line the bottom of the reflection pools. By the time summer arrives, all doubt as to your health and harmony is lost, and it seems as if you never left save in a terrible dream that has been safely awoken from.

Your healing skeletal hand soothes the Necromancer skillfully and wholly, and before long he is back to his own works, as mysterious as they may be in the deep larder of the keep that had long since been converted into his quarters.

"Of course. More troops. Yes. The visit to Zlatan lands went quite well. We were able to offer many things to its people and new ruler. She is a young woman, but seems to have a level head on her shoulders. I worry for her state, though. Her demeanor is peculiar, and after talking with many servants they attest that while she was once a very dour lady, her behavior over the last few seasons has grown to display a touch of ... mania, perhaps. Also, there was an incident."

Nah, there's an actual ghost story that goes exactly like that. It's one of my favourite as it's probably even more outlandish than the one about people's soul migrating into parrots or the one about the guy who had sex with two trees.
>>
>>22364911

It could be a good thing for a WHILE. Long term, probably not. The girl's going to need an heir at some point, and as many sterling qualities as the Thane posesses, I don't think he'll be able to help with that.
>>
>>22364967

My biggest fear is that she goes all psycho on him or, since we are talking about eastern comics, yandere.
>>
>>22364967

He'll never be particularily social in any case.
>>
>>22364842
Hey Mors! I have a question about your excellent quest.

Since you want to keep it all macro to make it easier to run, can we propose a macro-level benefit (for example, bonus to attempts to raise a regiment, lowered chances of unrest from necromancer's attempts to fertilize land) by writing fluff for such an action that might otherwise be considered micro-level stuff (establishing a military academy or creating laws that allow levies to be raised more easily, or leveraging out public image to change perceptions of the practice of necromancy)?

More macro-level decisions for you, more room for writing fluff and schemimg for your players.

ALSO, would you be greatly offended if someone borrowed the format of your quest and designed another one using it? Because it's a pretty bitchin' format, the whole inner court thing, seasonal decisions, etc.
>>
>>22365036

Someone already did it once. the player as a dragon and his inner court (with a dragon knight as Thane).

It died pretty quicly though.
>>
>>22365006

I am not worried about the Thane being damaged here. Dude is equivalent to one unit of Elite troops, right?

I am worried that fostering this relationship, while it might keep her under our control in the short term, would seriously impact her psyche and stability in the longer term. We are trying to build a stable, successful state which could continue past our, uh, redeath.

If we redie, and the Thane goes back to eternal grave watching, that's going to completely screw over the ability of the Viscountess to rule what amounts to half our territory. So let's not attempt to hook 'em up, 'kay? If unfostered, she'll hopefully move on eventually.
>>
>>22364967

might not be as big of a problem, consorts have historical precedence in cases where one of the ruling pair is unable to do their duty, so to speak.

we can do the same for ourselves.
>>
>>22365070
It's still polite to ask permission, and credit the origin of the idea.

Also the other question is pretty relevant.
>>
>>22365111

Makes sense, we are not that manipulative, and we should be kind to the girl. She must become a strong ruler for her land to prosper.

And nice trips.

You look to the Wizard. He looks directly back at you, right into your empty sockets, as if there is nothing more to be said.

>You briefly recall the fruits of your study ...

The Wizard's tower swirls with the energies of the world, bounteous and hungering alike, a cloying fog of crackling potential and an untapped might that makes your skull ache. A flawless ball of glass rests on a podium in the corner of his antechamber, and when you look in its direction all you see is an endless field of red stretching out to the horizon than only fades when you tear your eyes away. The sight leaves you with a ringing in your skull and the sound of a mighty, waterless river echoing behind it.

"My lord, please. This Name you mention is no light thing. Listen closely, please, as it is harder to explain to someone who is not wholly dedicated to comprehending it."

He clears his throat.

>The Ur-Flesh is an entity outside creation.
>The Ur-Flesh represents all that is not, and all that is between.
>The Ur-Flesh is the raw clay of indeterminate substance; it is without form or material.
>The Ur-Flesh is without want or need.
>The Ur-Flesh is without love or hate.
>The Ur-Flesh exists only at the border of creation, and can neither exist not cease to exist.

>It is the Ur-Flesh's nature to be an avenue for change and possibility, but it is without consequence or a concept of such. It is not the destination or the traveler; It is the journey.

>The Ur-Flesh played a role in the creation of the towers and the discovery of magic itself by mortals; this role is as lost as the history of the towers themselves.

>Only the greatest of Wizards know of the Ur-Flesh, and those who know of it know only from personal experience, as the Ur-Flesh seems to defy being recorded in script; it is not learned or forgotten -- it is only known.

>There are roughly eleven magical users in the kingdom of equivalent power to your Wizard.

The knowledge's cryptic nature troubles you.

>>22365036

Yeah, this quest here stands on the writing first and on the rules second.

But I do think we currently have another quest with the GM writing an actual wiki in order to cover the necessary background details.
>>
>>22365166

Well shit, that wasn't particularily helpful, I suppose?! Makes it even more mysterious what they COULD WANT from us for their services. I mean, they apparently have no wants or needs.
>>
>>22365166

Alright guys, how about we never ask a favour to the Ur-Flesh?

It looks like we must eventually learn our true identity, but that's the only thing we will do.

More than we knew before, and now we know just how valuable our Wizard is, and how many others we have to contend with.
>>
>>22365036
[ Oh, I essentially already do that. Being able to frame one's reasoning in a compelling way is part of why I enjoy this quest; players think of methods and fluff and narrative when choosing courses of action.

If someone can explain a course of action in a way that is interesting and makes sense storywise, it always has more weight with me -- in fact, at -least- half of DKQ by now is wholly poster-created content that I just elaborated on or ran with.

What I -don't- like is when people reduce an interesting game or story into a historical recreation exercise, or go "over the head" of the narrative to accomplish something. It smacks to me of the same kind of insufferable jackoffs who start every D&D game by getting together the accessible in-period ingredients for gunpowder and throwing a shitfit when the DM says "no." There is no case where someone is empirically 'right' in their approach to a problem here. That's why I shy away from micro -- It dives immediately into recreation where people just start climbing the historically accurate tech tree or playing the economic/irrigation/metallurgy superiority angles.

And as for imitation, I consider it the sincerest form of flattery. ]
>>
>>22365166
I have to admit, I'm curious about the question related in >>22365036

It'd be nice to be able to have an outlet for /tg/'s usual tactical genius without creating more bullshit for OP to have to deal with.

The Ur-Flesh 'exists' (for lack of a better word) to fulfill its function of facilitating change. By providing us with opportunities to enact change, it fulfills its function. Man, and I thought the MC of Zeonquest was cursed with a creepy second face....
>>
>>22365392
Glad to have Dead King's Quest back, see you then!
>>
So before we all wait a week, we should maybe capitalize on this thread to plan.

In light of >>22365311
I propose the following actions:

1) Start an orphanage, to bring the unfortunate children of the war into care.
>Macro effect:
Improves morale and reputation, as it is a sign of beneficence. Also means less starving, disease-bearing children running around.
>Secondary effects and later planning:
Over time, these children can be trained in a number of professions and bolster the efforts of virtually any portion of our administration. It might take ten years, but we would have at our disposal a source of skilled labor and possibly brilliance worth the wait - and some orphans might be closer to age of maturity than we think.

As we are unable to have children in the mundane fashion, and as we would be founding this ward, they would have a good chance to see us as a parental figure, and as such might be extremely loyal.

2) Learn to speak to the souls of the dead.
>Macro effect:
New ability, perhaps oracular, perhaps more of a bonus roll. More legitimacy in certain circumstances, because we might actually contact the shade of the duke we're supposed to be and beg his advice...or maybe someone less likely to be extremely pissed.
>Secondary effects:
If someone wants to contact one of the other great figures of the realm, it helps if we can do it. It also lets us more legitimately play the returning ancestor ready to lend our strength to living descendants in a time of need.
>>
>>22366356

3) Tour the nation dispensing wisdom and sermons as a living symbol of the ancestral faith.
>Macro effects:
Morale improvements, greater legitimacy, more stable leadership, less chance of unrest(?)
>Secondary effects:
This will allow us to increase our personal power enough to perhaps usher in cultural changes and give our laws yet more weight. After all, if the ancestors speak through us, it might let us do something like the following:

4) Leverage our influence to alter the public perception of necromancy.
>Macro effects:
Less chance of unrest for the necromancer's actions, gristly or otherwise.
>Secondary effects:
Some possibility of turning the Necromancer into a figure perceived as a healing power that can commune with the ancestors. Perhaps even a chance for him to find an apprentice, or create a school of like healers and priests.
>>
>>22366466

5) Use our duchy's wealth to create public places of ancestral veneration, or donate to the faith if these exist already so that they may be improved.
>Macro effects:
Greater influence among or approval from both the laity and clergy of the ancestral faith.
>Secondary effects:
Possibility to strengthen the faith sufficiently for the ancestral church to more effectively intervene in the coming struggles and foster peace through priestly mediation, somewhat akin to catholic popes (don't worry, Mors, at least this historical precedent backfires like fucking crazy).
Possibility of having the church perform useful services like conveying orphans to our orphanages from all over the duchy, ratifying our less popular but necessary decrees, and lending greater consideration to philosophical works we put forward for the benefit of our society (change is pleasing to the ur-flesh).

6) Improve the status of prostitutes and have the wizard or witch research magical contraceptives, then found a bordello in your capital (and possibly throughout the duchy) of sufficient quality, safety, and health as to bolster the Wizard's loyalty and temper his boredom; possibly this will take the form of a historical Temple of Venus with a clergy of priestesses devoted to sating earthly desires in various mystic rites/for fertility.
>Macro effects:
First one of these will bolster the Wizard's loyalty and lower chances of boredom, and the 'research' for the industrial-quantity contraceptives should boost his loyalty and morale.
>Secondary effects:
A network of these might increase trade and travel for obvious reasons, and create a taxable, safe trade in our duchy that may well improve the lot of an oft-abused group of women. Certainly it may generally improve morale. Eventually, it may also increase the population, or at least result in more orphans being up for adoption - especially the offspring of people successful enough to earn the bordello's price.
>>
>>22366733
7) Have the wizard or witch create magical items that boost the wearer's mental stability or lower chances of sanity, in effect they'd be medallions of clear thought.
>Macro effects:
May lower the Wizard's chance of insanity. May lower the viscountess' mania.
>Secondary effects:
A limited run of these, granted to officers in our military forces or distributed to investigators, magical researchers, administrators, etc could grant benefits in virtually any given field. Certainly judges/magistrates would likely be fairer.

8) Investigate the origin of the cursed sword.
>Macro effects:
More arcane lore, and perhaps the knowledge of how to neutralize other such artifacts. Or create them
>Secondary effects:
If the Ur-Flesh made the Serpent-Blade, it may have made a Faustian bargain with its wielders. Certainly the new viscountess seems a bit off, perhaps still laboring under a curse; certainly the knowledge to make one such artifact may mean there are more out there, waiting to fall into the wrong hands. This bears investigation.
>>
>>22366850
9) Further investigate the Ur-Flesh, send inquiries to the other eleven mages.
>Macro Effects:
More understanding of the price of dealing with this entity.
>Secondary effects:
Learning about its history and past effects may yield only randomness, or a grasp of its capacity, or it may allow us to know where we stand and just how weighty the unknown costs of calling in its favors are.

I mean, it'd be dangerous to take it up on its favors, but ultimately boring not to.

10) Found a school for the sons of nobles and individuals with noble qualities (ie, talented or smart children.
>Macro effects:
Bonus to nobility's capacities, improved upper classes, cultivation of talent in the duchy, and greater loyalty of lower nobles.
>Secondary effects:
Historically, nobility would exchange hostages to improve diplomatic times; in peacetime these were fosterlings that were raised at an ally's court - even the court of a hesitant ally. We can do one better than some half-tyrannical necessity: we can use our extensive wealth to offer any growing noble child, or anyone given the noble gift of wit, a chance to learn under the tutelage of the best tutors in the land - and formulate a better pedagogical tradition while we're at it. If we can improve it enough for it to be indispensable, as long as the people trust we're not going to threaten them with the lives of their children (unless they REALLY do something idiotic, I expect), it will improve their devotion to us for entirely appropriate reasons - we won't even need to coerce them.
>>
>>22367063
11) Further develop the school into an institute.
>Macro effects:
While Mors is completely right not to let us suddenly invent gunpowder, this may grant bonuses on anything applicable, from arcane or necromancy-related research to military training to lawmaking to industry whatever we ask the learned minds of our people to help with. Basically, if the Black Thane is a feat-granting machine, this institution might be a bonus-granting one. Or it might grant feats. Whatever.
>Secondary effects:
Further resource investment might grant macro bonuses to various areas/qualities of the duchy, and certainly the cultural influence and prestige will only increase our capacities in the realm.

12) Have the wizard or more likely the witch teach us a bit of illusion magic in order to allow us to take on the visage of the duke whose bones we inhabit. Or possibly the Necromancer could do it. If we cannot learn such a skill, an artifact might be made to let us take on this visiage.
>Macro effects:
This is likely redundant and thus of low quality, but it can perhaps be leveraged to make other nobles feel we are more their earthly equal and set them more at ease.
>Secondary effects:
Learning basic magic means we can learn yet more magic. Aside from that, it may be seen as a gesture to make the living more at home with us - taken on their behalf. Oh, and it means we might be less noticeable if we need to be stealthy at some point.

No offence, but this is kind of the reason Mors prefers to avoid going into details. Holy fuck.

I actually like this stuff, but I don't think this is a fitting quest.
>>
>>22367200
13) Develop the various arts and apply them, for example creating a state courier service to reach more people diplomatically or boost the effectiveness of our actions, or a military academy to make it easier to train more troops more quickly, or whatnot. Certainly we seem to be a leading authority in the field of necromancy - we might develop it further, and write a treatise or ten on it.
>Macro effects:
Certainly variable, but undoubtedly bonuses to rolls or actions.
>Secondary effects:
Creating institutions that aim to improve various effects means investing wealth, but gaining an overall bonus later. This last war diminished our coffers greatly - we might prevent some of the damage next time. Injury to our inner court is prevalent; developing an effective bodyguard force might prevent it. Really up to the particulars.

14) Make peace between the duchies, rather than using force of arms to quell the rivalries.
>Macro effects:
Well, certainly this is mostly obvious, but it leaves us free to pursue other goals like the bizarre nature and possible threat of the Ur-Flesh. Of course, it is unlikely that we will succeed completely - but peace and the settling of old scores through champion warfare or at a moot in the ancient tradition would only improve our lot.
>Secondary effects:
Capitalizing on the peace might put us in a position to become a power behind the throne and improve the stability and good fortune of our nation, and thereby the lives of our subjects.
>>

see >>22365036
and >>22365311

Every one of these proposes a macro effect and isn't just 'lol let's get saltpeter and charcoal and make gunpowder.'

The idea is that if you like a specific goal, we write fluff for it and make it applicable for the quest.

No, no, I read that, and I have not problem with it, but isn't this going a bit overboard?

Consider that all these posts are being made by one guy, can you imagine what will happen when others start doing the same? At best Mors has problems picking one or two of the ideas, and at worst we use an entire thread to discuss one decision and three to finish one court meeting.
>>
>>22367445
When House Karban got popular I made a Steam group to help the more dedicated participants come to decisions without cluttering up the running thread TOO much. You might consider an IRC group or something, just to be able to come up with a unified plan going forward.
>>
>>22367445
Most posters don't think ahead like that at all, and judging by past examples only those who can produce decent fluff will be allowed to try and enact such efforts.

I expect that, given Mors' ability to produce quality content, he will be capable of setting a bar for a minimum level of quality for suggestions just fine.

If he has a problem with it, he can say so himself. To speak for him is to try to limit the scope of the quest on behalf of the questgiver - never a terribly popular option, any more than blindly shoving shit down his throat like this guy here >>22363282

Consider the response he got both in >>22363409 and in >>22363711

Mors is obviously the expert on what he will or won't accept, but his answer in this area seems to be 'fluff all you want, but I determine what to accept and how to interpret it so bear that in mind before you sperg out.'

Given that he's more or less had time limits enforced on decisions previously when people couldn't make up their fucking minds, I don't think it'll be too bad if there IS argument.
>>
>>22367548
Well, there's #quest on sup/tg/ IRC, which was set up for more or less precisely this purpose.

I'm the type of quest participant that writes/helps edit the wiki entries a questgiver might set up from previous quotes and works to resolve disputes and move decisions forward. Typically I find it moves the quest along just fine when you ask people for their ideas and incorporate them into a greater whole, resolve disputes, and offer to do something as a subsequent action in exchange for someone's support now, or vice versa.

Often, the quests I participate in have other players that are like-minded thinkers. We usually have ready suggestions and consensus for the OP's consideration a good while before OP's ready to post.
>>
