Sorry for the tardiness, Anon. Traffic is a goddam nightmare out there right now. Time for tanks now though!

Ooishi was good. Very, incredibly, horrifyingly good.

An incredibly aggressive recon by Corporal Ooishi, followed by the armored haymaker your augmented company presented to the Russian line over the Oder got you across. It was a relatively bloodless fight all things considered, your crossing point wasn't heavily defended save for a single platoon of T-80's in the open. The lead tank got center punched by her M40A1 before it could be on it's radio...that is, if it even saw her, which you doubt. The upside is that, other than the crack of her rifle, there was no evidence that they were dead. This happened three more times before she gleefully scooted over the bridge and into Slubice.

Colonel Carpenter hadn't lied, your drive up is proving to be incredibly uneventful, however tense it may be. While that, in essence, is a good thing, it's also unsettling as all hell you decide. You would think that this close to the line, the area would be absolutely crawling with Russian occupation troops. Especially in the towns, though maybe not necessarily in the villages like what you've been passing through. Lots of tiny logging villages, lots of woods to hide in if need be, but crossing the open plain in the middle of the night with almost no moon is plenty stealthy enough.

Having ordered complete radio silence, the only discernible sounds were those of what the Booze Hound and your crew are making. While you are settled in deep thought and concentrating on the terrain in front of you, Michael and Nicky are having a conversation of their own. This would be a great time to converse with the witches, you think. The last few hours of your R&R proving to be more insightful and educational about them than the almost three weeks you've been working with them.

That'll have to come at a different time though. You close the gap on Golice, where Ooishi has been waiting and in overwatch for the past ten minutes quickly. She can move at full speed in her M3 strikers with relative stealth, while the Abrams' and Leos of the group seem lumbering in comparison.

There are a few buildings scattered loosely, quite a few stacks of felled lumber, and absolutely zero sign of any Special Forces activity. You can't decide if that's a good thing or not, last time you checked their whole job was to train an uprising from within hostile territory which is what this most definitely is currently.

Having twelve extra guns is always helpful, especially when they're some of the best the United States has to offer.

After punching the releases, you push your hatch free and stand behind the ma deuce that's somehow seen zero action this whole war. You rest assured, however, that it will soon enough. You flip your own NOD down and hope to see something out of the ordinary . Sometimes Booze Hound's scopes can miss details in things, details that your own goggles wouldn't pass over.

You're surprised when you catch a glimpse of a PEQ box laser draw onto your chest. You're not surprised when eleven more quickly follow suit.

“Death And Taxes!” the challenge quickly comes. Thank god you payed attention in history, or even the briefing that Sharpshooter gave you on the password wouldn't have stuck.

“Oh, shit. Um, 'Our new Constitution'!” You reply as soon as you can remember it. The instant you do, all of the IR lasers switch off, and one of the most dangerous looking men you've ever seen in your life steps out of the dark. His completely tricked-out rifle is slung low on his chest, he's got a body armor design you've never seen in your life, a tiny hockey style helmet, and more ammo on his IBA than you've probably got in your entire tank.

“Captain Bishop, right?” he asks, climbing aboard the side of your tank.

“That's right,” you reply, thrusting a hand out towards him, “Black Horse is here to save the day.”

Preparing to drop back into your turret, you flip your NVG's up on your helmet and detach them from the mount.

“Alright group, I like it. Keep your heads on a swivel though, I'd hate to have to explain why I'm not coming back with greenie beanies to someone.”

He smirks again, and issues his orders into his headset. Seemingly made of shadows, two other special forces operators jump on your vehicle almost instantly. Your other vehicles are quickly mounted in the same fashion.

“Captain! We've got trouble!” Ooishi breaks the radio silence. She's probably at the crash site by now, or she's at least found it.

“Alright Ooishi, what've you got?” You hastily reply, motioning with your hands for the group soldiers to hold on. Dropping back into your seat, Nicky and Mega have halted their conversation and are manning their stations. You're glad you woke them up and kept them in the barracks all those weekends to drill for things like this.
“I have Russian infantry closing quickly on the crash site! You're going to have to drop the pedal to the metal to get here in time, sir!” She's whispering, but just barely. It would seem she's having a hard time containing her excitement. Or adrenaline.

“Alright Wittmann, you're up. Take 'em out, get me those zoomies!” you say into your mic.

“Ja Captain. Let's go girls! Sargeant Rockfield, take point!” She orders. You can't hear them inside your own vehicle, but you know that they're gone pretty quickly.

“Captain, I'm getting strange radar contacts,” Ooishi says, whispering again “They look like really small APC's, but there's no way this is a mechanized unit. There's too many of them running around.”

“Alright Corporal, just keep your eyes on 'em, and don't get in a fight you can't win. Wittmann and the others are on the way.” you reply, tapping mega and signaling that you want AP loaded. He nods, and slings a round in the breech.

Thinking better of getting even more zoomies, and possibly even your oldest brother in trouble (completely despite the fact that that's exactly what they're trained for) you decide to hold off on calling Razor flight in. Especially since you have no idea what is in store for this fight.

“Captain, we're here. Lots of red infantry picking through the crash site, but no vehicles that we can see. No witches, either.” Wittmann calls over the radio.

“Alright LT, hold off with your guns. We're going to ripple fire the big guns and keep constant pressure on them if we can. Roger that?

“Ja.”

Two kilometers isn't a long distance to travel, even offroad. Hans pushes the Booze Hound cross country on the bounce, and you're stashed in a woodline before you really know it. You can't see anything, and you don't have a magical radar, but you definitely trust Ooishi's reports.

“Ey, captain Bishop. We're jumping off to do our thing, you guys are on your own for a bit” Lieutenant Anderson says over your comms. He must've grabbed the infantry phone at the rear of your tank.

“Alright greenie, don't get in a fight big brother can't bail you out of.” you reply. He'd probably already hung the phone back up, as he didn't respond.

“Hans! Get us around this hill. Nicky gimme ninety degrees left! All vehicles, form up! Column, push hard for the crash!” You order. Hans pulls you out of the woodline just as Wittman breaks over the radio.

“Captain, I can see those contacts that that Ooishi was reporting. Two soviet tank witches. We'll be engaging as soon as this fight starts.”

Your heart skips a beat. Shields, magic guns, and maneuverability. Getting them knocked out of the fight is going to be a bitch and a half, you think to yourself. Just as the last syllable crosses your mind, you round the hill.

Ooishi wasn't kidding, the place crawls with Russian infantry. No visible AT weaponry, which is good. In fact, they're relatively light infantry, AK's and LBE from what you can see. Not a one of them has any sort of body armor on, outside of their helmets.

“Nicky, get on the Coax! Don't waste our AP rounds!” You cry out before he can thumb the firing stud of the 120. Sure, a direct hit on an infantryman with an AP round wouldn't leave anything except maybe the soles of his boots, but it'd be a massive waste. The 240 is much better suited for that sort of thing.

Nicky just nods, flicks a selector switch, and pulls the trigger. The co-axial machine gun belches, and cuts a swathe out of the Russian infantry swarming around the crash. The three tanks behind you do the same, four M240 machine guns gutting the fighting power of this soviet detatchment.

1/2
>>
On the hill, four of your five witches open fire themselves. Carius and Rockfield's light machine guns rip into the forest behind the crash, presumably where the Russian witches are. Wittmann is picking her shots carefully it seems, and Meyer is holding off. Probably until she gets a clean shot, that 50mm cannon will rip through just about anything they have.

While your vehicles continue gunning down as much infantry as possible, the twelve green berets slip from their own hiding spot and into the crash wreckage. Two of them begin prepping the site for detonation, four of them are on security (though how they aren't getting shot to ribbons is a complete mystery to you), while six continue searching for the pilots and ejection seats.

Now would probably be a good time to call Razor, you think, but there's a nagging voice in the back of your head that keeps you from pulling the proverbial trigger on it. You can't put your finger on why, but something just isn't right here.

“Alright cap, we own the area for the most part. All we've got are the witches over in the woods. Looks like the infantry is exiting the area for the most part. Should we go hunt 'em down?” Rockfield asks. While technically not in command of your witch element, she's tied for the most combat experience and is much more sociable than Wittmann.

> [] “Definitely fucking not. That's a trap if I've ever seen one. Hold what you got, we're going to set up a perimeter around the crash and keep looking for those pilots.”

“Oh fuck no, top. You girls hold what you've got, we're going to deploy in a perimeter around the crashes. Ooishi, I need to know every radar update you get, I don't fancy getting schwhacked from somewhere I didn't see it coming.” You quickly order. You can smell an ambush a mile away.

“Hey captain,” Anderson again. He's starting to get really scary with that whole 'at the phone then not' thing he's doing. “Those pilots aren't anywhere around here. The ejection seats are, but the flight recorders are missing too. The crashes are ready for det, but we want to go look for those pilots. Something doesn't sit right about this.”

“Yeah, I've got the same feeling LT. Can you push into the forest and get eyes on the reds?” you ask, keeping your eyes focused on your screen. You would be on thermals, but the fires from the crashes would completely wash them out. As it stands, it's pretty hard to see anything with just the ambient light enhancer.

“Yessir. I already have most of my team out that way. Give me a shout if we're about to get jumped by armor or something though, wouldja? Don't really like the idea of that shit bearing down on us.” He doesn't sound concerned about it, but more conscious of the threat.

1/2
>>
“For sure, secret squirrel. You come into contact, I'll dump a shitload of 120 mm hate on the reds for you. Just hit me on our tacnet.” you reply.

He clicks the receiver twice and hangs up, only to disappear into the woods.

You need to learn to do that with the Booze Hound, you think.

From there, all is tensely quiet...for about thirty seconds. Then, the forest rips into a symphony of automatic gunfire and explosions. It'd be almost beautiful, if it weren't for the fact that your guys probably just walked into an ambush.

“Hey, Captain. Can you give me some HE between our two elements here? A few meters to the left and right respectively, please. My guys are flipping their strobes on.” Anderson says calmly over the radio, before your NOD picks up twelve flashing strobes. Professionals, those men.

“Mega, drop AP, gimme HE. Nicky, put that shit just off the side there.” You're not going to question the SOF commander's request, if for no other reason than that man has more than proven himself to know what he's doing.

Parroting the green beret's fire mission to your other three tanks, Nicky starts to set the sights perfectly on target. Mere seconds later, your cannon roars, sending Booze Hound's finest regards to what you hope are Stalin's kids. The three vehicles behind you respond in kind, not to be outdone by Booze Hound's challenge. The forest is rocked with the four explosions, not a single strobe blinking out or moving.

“Perfect, thanks Cap. I'll explain over a glass of scotch someday.” Anderson says. “Oh, this is also probably a really good time to call those PJ's in. We've found the pilots and are fighting our way over towards them. Any chance you guys can get in this fight?” He asks, his question punctuated with two gunshots.

From what I've read, classic soviet doctrine was to keep air support for attacking forward elements and when the bulk of the army showed up, switch to keeping NATO birds out of the way while arty took over. Their AAA weren't very good at being able to distinguish friend from foe so instead they just adjusted operating areas to avoid friendly fire.

“Roger that, Greenie. Wait one, help is on the way.” You say, flipping over to your platoon net. “Ladies, if you please?”

They don't need much more persuasion than that. Rockfield and Meyer are the first to roll off the hill, followed by Wittmann and Carius. Ooishi, however, doesn't move, and settles behind her rifle a little more comfortably.

“Alright Anderson, you got four fightin' females on the way. Play nice!” You say, before cutting off the conversation with him.

Getting onto Razor's net is much, much more difficult than you'd thought it would be. Apparently the Air Force doesn't want to share it's toys, even if other branches are spending a lot of resources trying to save it's boys. Once you do, however, you're rewarded with one of the smoothest transitions you've been privy to in your entire time in the military.

Razor is on it's way.

“Captain!” Wittmann's voice cries over the radio. “Captain! We're in hand to hand with a soviet armored witch platoon! Get in here!” It doesn't sound like a request.

Ooishi's rifle cracks once, before “Thanks leatherneck!” from Rockfield over the radio.

“Alright Penetrators, the ladies need some real men to lead this dance. Let's get in there, Jolly Rodger!” you belt out.

1/3
>>
Your tanks quickly form into a loose chevron formation, one that you've practiced countless times at the drill field. You close range in roughly a minute, just in time to see Wittman drop her G3 to it's sling and slug an almost stereotypically blonde soviet witch in the jaw with a hard right hook. Whoever taught her how to fistfight did it right, as she pivoted on her left foot and threw her shoulder behind her fist.

However, a witch punching a witch in the mouth isn't quite like a boxer doing the same thing. The soviet witch is rocked off her feet and soars roughly five feet through the air, tumbling for a few extra feet. Enough time for Wittmann to re-shoulder her G3 and execute the blonde with a well timed Mozambique drill.

Meyer and Carius, however, are having a time of it themselves, being tossed around like ragdolls by the remaining two Russian witches.

[] Help Meyer and Carius!

“Nicky....” It takes you a few seconds to actually conjure up the words, but eventually, you get “Nicholas, paste 'em.”

He glances at you, slowly coming to his own realization. He nods, before swinging the turret onto the witch that is straddling Meyer, swinging her fists wildly.

He thumbs the firing stud.

Booze Hound roars a challenge, firing a 120mm APFSDS round crafted with nothing but pure hate and loathing and loaded with only the purest malice directly into the soviet witches side. Her shield soaks the round itself, but the kinetic energy rips her off of Meyer and flying through the forest at an incredible rate of speed.

The witch with her hands around Carius's throat whips her head up to see what happened, sees herself staring down three Abrams barrels, and decides better of everything. She drops Carius, and throws her hands to the sky.

“Friend! Friend!” she cries, tears welling up.

“Top, handle this one!” you shout, leaving Rockfield to deal with the surrendered witch. “Ooishi, if that other one we just blasted comes back, you handle her!”

Wittmann, Carius, Meyer, and your four vehicles steam ahead, linking up with the Green Berets a scant two hundred meters from the hand to hand engagement. They're fighting their own fight, carbines and rifles making only picked kill shots as opposed to the Russian's full auto fusillade. If you weren't in an armored house sized mass of 'fuck you', the amount of bullets zipping about might actually be a threat. As it stands, Booze Hound gleefully wades past the special forces and tears into the Russian line. Taking the fight back to them feels incredible.

War is hell, deal with it. In fact, it'd probably be a fair bit bloodier than it's being portrayed. Imagine, all those poor soviet conscripts we just smeared all over the landscape, or the occasional unlucky one who happened to take a round to the guts that wasn't immediately fatal. The fact that witches are basically child soldiers is unfortunate, but for various reasons it's socially acceptable in this universe because, well, magic powers are a hell of a force multiplier.

Yes, we had a massive propaganda machine demonizing the soviets to the point that it engrained itself in the social consciousness. They had something similar, of course.

That doesn't make any of that shit true, however.

That rant was more directed at Pugh for that 'engaged the priority target' bullshit, since in this particular case 'engaed the target' means 'turned a little girl into hamburger', and the first term was meant to make us forget the implications of the second.

Oh come now. No need to exaggerate. The witch we shot with the tank round just got sent flying with her shield absorbing almost all of the destructive force. The witch who got killed got shot by one of our German tankwitches' battle rifles. Maybe not pretty, but not as ugly as a tank round to the face.

Oh no, I'm very much aware. I have some good friends who hail from the former soviet bloc countries. And I mean, hell you so much as breath the word communism in conjunction with ANYTHING it takes a lot of political, verbal and social hoop jumping to get people to not dismiss it out of hand.

On the topic of War being hell. It's very much true. However that very horrific nature is what gives it it's weight, it's meaning. If you remove the human element, the sacrifice, the danger from War, then it loses it's meaning. That's primarily why I'm so against the proliferation of drones and thus the X-47 program.

“Aw, he wants to play with us boys! It's fourth quarter, we're in the red zone with ten seconds on the clock, and we're down by five! He thinks he can hang!” you laugh to yourself. “Let's fuckin' show him how we play some ball! Nicky, running shot, lead vehicle! Hans, get us in the end zone! Mega man, make sure we're up to speed!” You swiftly order.

One day, a head shrink is going to have a field day with you. You're going to have to figure out why everything becomes a football reference with you.

Booze Hound screams across the solitary logging road and into the other side before Hans slams on the brakes and whips the tank around, ready to go sprinting back across onto 'your' side of the woods. Nicky already has the turret spun around to the left, waiting for his shot to line up. His thumb quivers over the firing stud.

Hans pops the clutch and sends the Abrams vaulting over the berm, crashing down in the center of the road.

Nicky fires.

The T-72 explodes miraculously, sending debris flying in every direction. Say what you will about the boy, but Nicholas can pinpoint the best spots to fire on every tank he's seen so far.

“Captain! It's time to go! Razor is at the main LZ!” Wittmann says, emerging from the woods. She spins and engages a second T-72, turning the turret of the Russian tank into a block of swiss cheese.

“Fine! We don't have the time to argue right now, hold the hell on! Hans, get us the fuck out of here!” You order.

“Shit sir, you don't need to tell us to hold on. We know you ain't gonna try to sneak out of this one.” Anderson says.

Razor, the HH-53 Pave Low, pulled in it's security team before lifting off with the two Air Force pilots and their flight recorders. Technically, your mission is now complete. It's just the whole not dying or getting captured thing you have to worry about now.

Ooishi, being the recon professional that she is, steams ahead of you. “Captain,” she starts over the radio, “I'm sure you know this, but we probably shouldn't take the road back in to our line. I'm going to push along the coast, our guys should be able to see us.”

“Go for it, devil dog. Keep your eyes peeled though.” you reply, not losing an ounce of your awareness. Getting killed now would be nothing but a damned shame.

Surprisingly, your route in is completely clear. There are no living Russians between you and your line, despite the fact that your unit just removed almost a company of dismounted infantry and two to three witches, and took one prisoner.

What's even more amazing is the lack of CAS or artillery that the Russians threw at you. Being that that's kind of their MO, you're absolutely dumbfounded that you saw not a single support element from the Reds.

Crossing back over the Oder, you leave your steelwheels at your motor pool to lead the POW over to the nearest MP post alongside Wittmann and Rockfield. She goes without a word, though you can tell she's biting back tears the whole time.

Afterwords, Anderson confronts you. Now that you're not in a seventy ton fighting vehicle, he seems a lot more intimidating.

“That was some shit hot fighting, Captain. Expect some good press here soon. We'll work together again in the future, I can tell you that for sure. We're headed to Rammstein for now, but keep your eyes to the trees. We'll be around.” He says, reaching out to shake your hand again.

“Hey, thanks. We couldn't have gone mission complete without you guys though, get yourself a double when you get back to Rammstein and have them put it on the Penetrator's running tab.” You smile and reply, shaking his hand. As you do, he presses a wooden nickel into your palm.

“Keep that around sir. You'll never know when you need a get out of jail free card from 10th group.” He smirks, and turns to walk away.

Now all that's left is to debrief Colonel Carpenter, though you'll have to wait for Wittmann to do so. She'll no doubt only have terrible things to say about you and your “glory hounding”, despite the fact that you couldn't chase a medal if you wanted to anymore.

One would think that finding a magical 17 year old girl in an almost all male camp would be easy. One would be wrong. After a few minutes of searching fruitlessly, you decide to head to the witches shared tent. After 'knocking' (see, announcing who you are before coming in), you step inside.

It's not too terribly different than what you expect to be in eventually, other than the fact that they somehow got their hands on mattresses, and a corner of the tent is walled off to where the ceiling starts.

“Hey Captain, what's up?” Master Sergeant Rockfield looks up from her M249, busily in the act of cleaning it. Next to her, a bible lays open on the book of Isiah.

“Not much top, just looking for LT Wittmann. You uh, a big bible person?” You ask casually.

“She's in the latrine right now sir, that walled off area. And yes. God gives me strength to fight.” She replies, pulling the bolt carrier and recoil spring free of the weapon. “That's not a problem, is it sir?”

“Oh, no. I was just curious. It's always good to have someone who's prayers get answered around.” You say, smiling. Just as you do, Wittmann steps out of the latrine, drying her hands on a cotton hand towel. Wherever these girls are getting their supplies is going to get a Nicky/Hans visit here real soon, you think to yourself.

“Captain.” She nods your way. “Are we headed to the debrief?”

“We sure are. You have anything you need to get off your chest?” You say, careful to look her in the eye. Commission be damned, it'll always be hard to not eyeball attractive females.

She cocks an eyebrow. “Not really, sir. Worried that I'm going to turn you in for medal hunting?” She says, smirking.

“Yeah, something like that. Or if things are starting to weigh heavy on your head.”

“Oh, you mean like shooting that witch? No, no, I'm okay. It was either her or me, and...well, it wasn't going to be me.” She says, her face set in stone.

“Alright LT, let's go then. But if you ever need to talk, my door is always open.” You say, a little taken aback.

The walk to Sharpshooter's CP holds nothing of note, other than some of the stares you get from fresh troops. Teenage girls without pants may be hard to find, but they'll probably always attract attention.

Sharpshooter, looking rather mussed, doesn't look up when you step in. “Captain, Lieutenant, find a seat.” he says. Wittmann heads over to her usual spot on the hood of his Humvee, while you prefer to sit on one of the empty grenade crates more towards his board.

“That was damn fine work, you two. I've got good reports from both the Air Force and tenth group on this one, so bang up job. Nobody expected to run into soviet witches out there, and even better work handling that. You're going to take NATO a long way if you keep working that well together.” He starts, looking up from his 'desk' a few times for emphasis.

“Lieutenant Anderson is asking around, trying to get a dismounted team attached to your unit for shit like this. Ultimately it'll be your call, but I gave it my stamp of approval. “Damned paperwork is going to be the end of this Army, mark my words.” he mutters off the cuff, before standing and motioning you to the map of the line.

“Well, what've you got for me?” He asks, looking expectantly at you.

Well sir” you start, “I've got three or four things for you. First, and most notably, they didn't hit us with a single support element. No CAS, no artillery, no heavy armor outside of two T-72's-”

“Four T-72's, actually. Ooishi disabled two before they could engage us.” Wittmann corrects you. Why hadn't Ooishi told you about that platoon? That could've been a whole lot of hurt if they got through unscathed.

“Four T-72's. Other than that it was, what I presume to be a conscription unit with non organic witch support.

“something else sir, is that we didn't run into a damned soul on our route up or back, save for the platoon of T-80s on the line that we punched. Not a single blocking group or QRF.” you trace your route along route 31, all the way up to Pimiecin from Frankfurt.

“Oh, and we nabbed a soviet tank witch. Killed at least two of her friends in doing so, maybe three, but we secured one and ran with her. I can have Master Sergeant Rockfield get you a report on that if you'd like.”

You run over your operation in your mind. Yeah, that about does it.

“Well, outstanding work son. All of your report is going to go to division at least, maybe higher. Stay near a phone or a runner, you might have some news soon. Oh, and we finally got mail. Yours is at the depot.” Sharpshooter says, headed back to his desk, informally dismissing you and Wittmann.
