Last Thread.

So yeah, CATastrophe Thread, Last I checked We were talking about Diver's Bay and Polar adventures.
>>
>>21902150
Diver's Bay is a pretty good name, but I think we can do better. We need something... punnier.
>pasting from last thread
I'll give you a hint: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Research_stations_in_Antarctica

And I wasn't thinking of cities so much as an expedition. A bunch of eggheads stumble across a faint radio signal coming from one of the research stations and (because they're fucking cat people) decide to look into it. Eventually they establish a permanent base there and start tracking down other stations using documents they found in the first station.

Diver's Bay is fine, not everything needs to be punny.

Anyway-

Polar Adventures.

So we have antartic research stations yeah. But what about say, ships frozen in the ice or pockets of air frozen in glaciers full of stuff. What should we do with polar bears, penguins, and huskies?
>>
>>21902206
>>21902288
There would be no Antarctica, though. Its all blue, all the world over.
>>
>>21902300
So the parts of the world that are in perpetual shadow for 6 months of every year are just as warm as the rest of the planet?

Most of the planet may be a tropical paradise, but there's still going to be ice at the poles.
>>
>>21902294

Penguins are tamed and kept as pets. A domesticated house penguin can go for a good pile of shinies, so there's unscrupulous groups who either steal pennies from actual trainers or, worse, attempt to pawn off wild pennies to unsuspecting crews and clans.
>>
>>21902300
Dude the poles of the planet are iced up no matter how warm or hot your planet is, as long a syou have water in liquid form there's ice at the poles.

Besides I may not like snow but some anons like it so what the hell? Why rain on their snow day parade?

So we have stations in antartica, what if they were testing out technology and stuff? Depending on how light hearted your game is the Kemomimi could find the perfect energy drink, or if you feel like going darker they could find a military base full of homicidal robots that have to be destroyed for the good of Kemomimi everywhere.

Might make for a good spooky setting in CATastrophe if the planet is 90% tropical paradise.
>>
>>21902294
>What should we do with polar bears, penguins, and huskies?
Yes, yes, and yes. In that order.

And yeah, shipwrecks all over. Shitty old computers that no longer function, radio transponders that kept going for all these years, the works. Basically a perfectly preserved snapshot of human scientific ambition as it was when they disappeared. It sounds a little creepy the way I say it ("abandoned research station, huh? Alright, DM, I'll bite. When does The Thing show up?"), but it should be played as innocently as possible. Besides, there's penguins. Catgirls chasing penquins across the ice shelves is about as innocent as you can get.
>>
>>21902364
Eats fish, good at swimming, social animal that has the potential to get along well with other animals once tamed... Good reason to hit the poles.

In fact I think Penguins should be one of the Defacto house Pets of CATastrophe, there can be dozens of domestic breeds each with their own inherent value and use.
>>
>>21902401
Oh man, domestic penguins. I fucking love you guys.
>>
>>21902401

pen-pen confirmed for my Miaosato's pet.
>>
>>21902393
You could also play it for feels. An antartic base of humanity right before the fall would probably be self sufficient. The scientists there probably died from old age so they could leave behind loads of artifacts in the form of recorded journals.

If you feel like giving your characters a swift kick in the nertz you could have them recover a set of encrypted disks and then hand them the transcripts of scientist as he realizes that he's one of the last humans who will ever live and how he comes to terms with that. (Or how he fails to come to terms with it if you feel like having him participate in the project that led to the creation of the Kemomimi.)

Huskies would probably go feral, I doubt polar bears would change much. Huskies could also make for a good export once trained. I figure a corgi/husky breed would also be a common site there too.

We already have giant tropical penguins that can be used for mass transit, though. And don't you think we should flesh out the tropics more before moving on to other biomes?
>>
>>21902479
I took generations of breeding and opne crazy, bored artic scientist to produce those penguins so that Kemomimi would have a useful, mild mannered beast of burden!

Pay Respect to Bob The Earless for without him we would not have the many breeds of penguin that enrich our lives.
>>
>>21902508
The original idea for the Rockskimmers is that they were one of the few species to adapt to the apocalypse.
>>
>>21902479

Hey, I just like the idea of penguin pets. Especially if we already have domesticated penguins already established.

They can be the setting equivalent to dogs. Proper breeding and training combined with pre-kemo genetic experimentation yielded penguins with massive genetic differences. You can have large ones meant to pull schooners and sea-cabs, or sleek, muscular ones to hunt down rats and luminescent snails in places the kemomimi can't reach, or even tiny, useless penguins that can fit in a furisode sleeve or jacket pocket so proper clansmen can keep their pets close by for comfort. It can act as another trait to train in (penguin handling), or another type of payment for a job well done or another market the players can mess around in. What's not to like in pet pennies?
>>
>>21902542
I kinda liked the idea of domesticated crabs and stingrays, myself.

Genetically modified Penguins that serve as The Setting Equivilent to dogs are now a thing. They have to be.

Anyway as for weapons I was thinking of having C/A Guns. Concussion Arc Guns. They're basically air Guns that also use laser light to transmit electricity to their target. You can knock a person down and electrocute them with a non lethal charge.

Or should we just not be terribly specific with our weapons?
>>
>>21902569

Also acceptable. Hell, we have cats, dogs and bird. Kemomimi can totally have crabs, penguins and stringrays.

I have to admit, the thought of an old cat-lady with a dozen pet crabs is as funny an idea to me as the idea of an over-pampered lap-penguin. Or a brightly colored stingray that's slowly being trained to spell for shrimp cubes.

Can we have Octopi, Squid, and Cuttlefish too? They are some of the most intelligent animals in the animal kingdom.

Oh and how about mutants/genetic constructs as high level encounters?
>>
>>21902725

I can see it, but we need some more land-base animals. Either that or the genetically fucked cephalepods are now air breathers or can at least hold their breaths out of water like champs.

Alternately, large squids can be raised akin to cattle, mostly grown for meat and for ink which can both be eaten or be used for material needs, like maybe a dye?
>>
>>21902768
We have Lung Fish so why not have Lung-Cuttles/Squid/Octopi?

They have specialized organs which let them retain water once in a dry environment and they can also breath air on land. They do have to return to water like say, a newt but they're no longer boun to it.

Oh and I want to call C/A Guns "Cushion Guns"

Taking My own advice...

If large cities are like Diver's Bay then small ones would probably consist of Boths tethered to anchors of some sort, possibly a building or geological formation. I can see some Kemomimi drilling holes in stones that weigh several tons and chaining their ships to the things if they intend to settle in an area.

Why not make the Arctic regions part of Dog territory, at least initially?

I liked the idea of stun spray, myself.

Can Pyrotechnics be a skill now?

Every party needs fireworks, and every Shiny Diver needs boom sticks.
>>
>>21902955
Why not? I can see Dogs owning most of the desirable land in the Artic, Cats and Bunnies would probably be there too but they'd be considered "Atypical" since surviving in a cold weather environment would take a lot of effort.

Oh and Pyrotechnics has to be a thing,. that is totally something I am gonna give my character. I wann keep C/A Guns, maybe throw in paralytic spray. Concussion sounds like "Cushion" so there could be pillow fight jokes...

Super-efficient solars, as I've understood it.
>>

>>21903359
As these two have stated Solar Energy. I suppose I could question where they're getting the super efficient batteries but we'll just assume that stuff like that was like... way common before the impact and all they have to do is salvage the batteries at first, retro engineering and diving for rare earth metals and stuff can follow.

Fossil Fuels are also an Option, I mean Diver's Bay was made when they dredged up 4 old Oil Rigs and welded them together so its totally possible that some Kemomimi would make a business out of extracting and using petroleum products and natural gas.
>>
>>21903359
Oh, okay. That makes sense. Because I was going to say, if the tropical paradise world was running on dieselpunk logic, it wouldn't be a tropical paradise for very long.
>>
Speaking logically solar panels and solar tech in general would probably be one of the most useful skills an Earlessomancer would have in their possession. The tech guy of the party would probably carry around a cumbersome backpack with solar pannels all over it and it'd probably have like 35 pounds worth of batteries in there so that they can recharge the party's shiny while they're trumping around in the soggy ruins of an office building.

That's what I though. Humans perfected solar tech before the event, and it was so widespread that the kemomi have picked it up. Super solar batteries and panels, ho!

And of course this is perfect for a dive into a stockpile of such batteries, constantly being charged everyday and drained by kleptomanders. A big ol' nest of 'em.
>>
>>21903726
Earlessmancers and tech crew are different things of the same field

It's like the difference between a computer programmer and a computer engineer, they both work with the same things but one deals with the nuts and bolts while the other deals with the things that run on them
>>
>>21903868
What do kleptomanders look like anyway? Fallout 2/NVs geckoes...which when it comes down to it are just giant axlotls with superfluos gills.

So we have kleptomanders who steal and horde shiny, hugtopuses were mentioned, which could be members of the land-octopi family. A particularly friendly breed of cephalopod methinks. Land-squid and Land-Cuttles are also a thing... As are domestic penguins.

Any plant life we need to work one or are they just...plants?
>>
>>21903958

I'm thinking not just the old varieties of seaweed and kelp but plenty of new varieties. Kelp/Seweed that uses gas bladders to float both in the air and on the surface of the ocean. Some can become as large as buildings.

Some kinds of kelp/seaweed have large pockets of salty brine, which when properly treated can become a potent seasoning, there're dozens of varieties and its quite the cash crop.

Truer words have never been spoken.
I think it usually is sold in about thumb-thick Plasticine-like grey tubes you buy per meter and cut into smaller pieces.
Stick a timer into it and you have a bomb, put it into a metal pipe and you have a weapon.

It's something everyone needs, but since only some settlements can produce it (maybe it's tech only known to dogs?), locations where you can get it are very influential, economically.

Think of the wealth crimson or salt brought in old times, and you have what I am going for.

Bomb-based economy... I guess I really went there.

One of the main issues here is that 90% of the tech kemomimi have is looted, batteries and certain chemicals are the most likely items that they would retrieve for weapons.

Chemicals that would be useful for I dunno a semtex knock off or TNT are unnlikely so yeah we'd get crude explosivces, firecrackers and such would be more likely than real exploosives.

This is not a settuing where an explosive economy is likely. BGeaches, ruins, parties. Fireworks can be a part of that but not C4.

Excerpt from journal of Dr. Sydl, Linguist:

No matter how many texts I acquire, it never seems to help. I have spent nearly two decades attempting to reconstruct the ancient language of our predecessors. First came the landmark - though immensely frustrating - discovery that the ancient languages were fractured to a much greater degree than previously thought. We have dialects, sure, but I have isolated at least two dozen different writing systems, and I can't help but feel that we haven't even scratched the surface.

Our best sources of information thus far have been what appear to be children's picture books. Lacking any sort of relationship between their languages and our single language, this visual context has proven to be invaluable. Of course, some of the objects in the pages of those books no longer exist. Trees and boats we are certainly familiar with, but "planes"? "Trains"? I will let the historians and archaeologists puzzle over such things, but I am now forced to realize the truth of the matter: we only have a child's understanding of their world. We fumble in the dark, using trial and error to sort out how their machines worked and what they were used for. If only we could understand their words, this would all be so much easier.

Especially since Kemomi are like 2 generations from picking up where we left off and starting up all our old mistakes if we decide to peel the "Tropical paradise" sticker off the setting.

That's cool and I can totally respect that and I hope you have lots of fun with that.I just find it incredibly boring because A: I'm male, B: my mother is openly bisexual and ran a gay bar once upon a time. This has led to me thinking of lesbians as incredibly boring. Half the reason guys want a gender ratio like that is for lesbian fantasies.

But yeah, I can see you having a lot of fun with a matriarchy game if it's played right. Best of luck anon.

> Picking up where humans left off

Not really; they don't have the shitty weather, nor any need to expand and conquer and exploit the resources of the land. Their main limit is food; breed too fast and they deplete local fish stocks and overtax the window-box agriculture and kelp farms, and they have to send excess population off to find a new structure to squat in.
Besides, they're too busy rummaging in the ruins for energy drinks and MP3 players to bother with some idiot buried in stasis kilometers below the seabed.

And yes, shitty weather drives expansion and growth. Contrast development/industrialisation of britain (cold, shitty damp weather) with, say, india (hot, monsoon season).

True dat, every individual settlement is autonomous and the gender ratio and form of governance differs. Some settlements have village councils where everyone gets a say, some are run by elders or a single patriarch/matriarch, some are run by a group of Divers (since they bring the shinies, they call the shots) and some are just loose gatherings of individuals doing their own thing.

I don't see the problem at all.

But since humans is part of the topic again, I got an idea that could be included in a campaign:
-No humans left on earth, just AIs that went insane to different degrees.
-the group find an old ass satellite dish. Maybe it was used as a literal big dish by someone else and the party earlessmancer properly identified it
-They try to make it work, because as far as they known by watching many holovideos is that they make funny noises and images if pointed at the sky
-idunnolol
-somehow they made it work, they don't even know what is communicating with
-[insert message from deep space here, possibly of human origin]

Interesting and worth woking on but humans are kind of a skub subject, lets save that for the inevitable human splat book.

Anyway on Governments and population: I think its best if we just leave this up to the GMs descretion, we don't know the precise ruling class of Star Dust Port because the GM in question hasn't shared it withus. (presumably to keep plot details out of his player's hands or just because he felt it wasn't worth mentioning) but we know that Diver's Bay (Basically a big ship made from 4 Oil rigs welded together surrounded by a city built on the back of sea going vessels) is run by 3 clans made up of nine families. These clans are Party Goers, Divers, and Earless Scholars, each clan has bunny, cat, and dog elements. From the looks of things it is equal parts Dynastic and Merocratic.

TL;DR
Just make up a setting location and share it with us, if it's primarily matricarchal/patriarchial explain why.

Newtown in the Frosty White is probably run in an rather authoritarian (in the best sense of the word) way due to necessity, with everyone knowing their place and what they have to do.

>>
>>21906198

In one of the previous threads there was a brief mention of lion-men roaming the world teaching shy catboys how to MAN UP and woo ladies with grace and strength. I figured this ship was it. It's a martial arts dojo, whaling boat and gym in one. The leader of the crew found some old war movies and was inspired by the drill sergeants. They see it as their mission to protect the weak, so they look for large beasties that threaten communities and try to hunt them down. That's about the gist of it.

An entire race of Kamina figure, I like it.

But in all seriousness that's an excellent idea. We just need a name for the ship (Beowulf comes to mind.), and a rough outline of their social hierarchy. Probably A meritocracy based on how MANLY you are. This being a Meritocracy gender doesn't matter all that much but its generally thoughtr that a man's place is to protect the weak and male chauvanism causes them to automatically classify women as weak.

That's my view on the matter anyway.

>>
>>21906339

I like Beowulf, actually. Or, if we're going with the cat theme, the Shere Khan. I suppose you could have a place for strong women too, in order to have strong children (maybe that's how lion-people are made)...
>>
>>21906443
Beowulf is fine, especially if you stick to the tale where he died fighting a dragon. 'Course Shere Khan is nothing to sneeze at either, man eating tiger and all that.

heh, an entire boat of manly cat people travelling around the world hunting monsters, exploring dangerous ruins, and in general searching for ways to prove their worth.

So the Beowulf/Shere Khan is a ship populated by Manly Cat Men (primarily lions but there's not hard rule on that) seeking to prove their worth. Probably dreaded by dog people since they don't take well to authority and bunnies won't like them much either due to their skittish nature.

Cats love the Beowulf though, when they come into port cat guys line up by the dozens and there are week long festivals where male youths prove their worth in the hope of earning a place in the Beowulf's dojo.
>>
>>21906544

Hmm. I guess there could be wolf people too, rivals of the lion/tigers and constant competitors for the MANLIEST spot. The Beowulf could have two rival dojos, one for dogs and one for cats (sorry bunnies, I can't come up with manly versions of you), and they have a feud going on, with annual competitions where the winner assumes command of the boat until the next competition.

They need to indicate their rank in the dojo visibly. They'll do this via a combination of piercings, tattoos and accessories. Boots made from seasnake skin, ostentatious rings, piercings made from rare materials, full body tattoos recording epic kills, massive championship style belts, luchadore masks.

basically every manly thing that can possibly be borrowed from Earless culture and adapted for their use they'll happily steal.
>>
>>21906675
Actually Hares are bigger, tougher versions of your average rabbit. They could easily serve as an achetype for manly bunny people. (Give 'em blood and vinegar!) I see them as more gentlemanly about the affair, top hats and monocles and big game hunting everywhere.

But yeah, 3 manly dojos traveling the seas and taking in Kemomimi from dozens of settlements and training them up to be manly monster hunters/diver/gentleman scholars is totally a thing we need.

Another example would be a catguy interested in the Earless would be more likely to curl up and read a nice book about them whereas a dogdude interested in the Earless might decide to irresponsibly test out the new tech they scavved from the last Dive.

I imagine any tabletop game played would be made less by pre-made rules and pieces and more by trying to make something out of the various game pieces salvaged from the deep, even if you end up losing 90% of the original game.

Imagine what kind of game you'd play with go pieces, Sorry pieces and Monopoly hotels with the board from Pandemic, the full "Lancelot's Armor" armor piece and board from Shadows Over Camelot and a set of clue cards. Most Kemomimi games are like that.

Verne had just settled into his bunk when the call came.

"Smoke! Smoke on the horizon!"

He snarled and swung his legs over the side of the mattress, nearly stomping his leather boots right through the floorboards as he forced them onto his feet. As he stormed out onto the deck, he saw that his compatriots had already gathered to investigate the commotion. Verne gazed out over the water, squinting to make out a shape in the distance. It was a boat. Captain Devran picked up the microphone to the ship's loudspeaker system. As he clicked it on, a horrible screech left the crew holding their ears. The captain was unfazed.

"AHOY, FRIENDS! DO YOU REQUIRE ASSISTANCE?" the giant cat yelled, his unamplified voice audible above the speakers themselves. A faint girlish scream from the distant vessel was his reply. Captain Devran turned to his crew. "HELMSMAN! BRING US CLOSER! EVERYONE ELSE, PREPARE TO RENDER ASSISTANCE!" Verne and the others scrambled to their stations.

The Beowulf slowly drew closer and closer, pitching slightly in the waves, until finally it drew close enough for the crew to lower the gangplank and board the vessel. Several rather pretty ladies were waiting on the deck. One of them rushed up to the captain on the verge of tears and grabbed his hand. "Please, our engine is on fire! You have to help," she pleaded, trying in vain to pull the towering man toward the door leading belowdecks. "Sir, please help us."

Devran lurched forward, dragging his damsel behind him. "CERTAINLY MADAM! IT WOULD BE MY PLEASURE TO HELP!" Verne and the rest of the crew followed their captain as he descended the stairs to the engine room. "GADE, INSPECT THE ENGINE!" he bellowed, pointing at entirely the wrong machine.

However, the mechanic had hardly begun to look it over when he reached in and pulled out a small canister. Rolling his eyes, he tossed it to the floor, where it belched smoke for a few moments before it suddenly stopped. "Guys," he announced, "we've been duped."

The door slammed shut behind them, and pale yellow smoke came billowing out of holes in the wall. Verne only managed to take a few steps before he lost consciousness.

>>21913407
Could be an interesting sort of irony. The earless set off some terraforming experiments before they die so the north and south pole wind up with some extra landmass. (Tectonic shifter tech or something. Created volcanoes but the end came before they could be used to raise the old continents.) That means earth can form and at some point some conifers and other cold weather plants took over from some busted research stations.

Might make for some interesting myths if the polar inhabitants come to the conclusion that the Earless changed the poles so that the kemomimi would have somewhere to live.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head there. I was more or less going for "enthusiastic but misguided". Davran's heart is in the right place, and he makes white knighting look cool, but he's easy to deceive and doesn't really know his own limitations and faults. He's the captain because he never hesitates to make a decision and he's an excellent... let's say motivational speaker. Yeah.

Or maybe it's just a show he puts on for his crew's benefit. Who knows?

Then you've got Verne, who is a generic grumpy Gus, and Gade is the Beowulf's exasperated, overworked mechanic. Stock characters, basically.

Oh, and I just came up with names off the top of my head. If you guys want to come up with new names / fill out the rest of the crew, feel free.

So we have "The Old Guard" which are robots, some are pest robots that can be disabled and destroyed with relative eas. Eartificers/Shinomancers probaly make a habit of reprogramming some and keeping them around for assistance.

I was thinking of having actual security robots with lethal protocols activated as the setting equivilent of say man eating predators. Feared, immortalized in stories, and actually very rare.

I realize the setting is light hearted but so are disney flicks and jesus, look at malificient in sleeping beauty. We need dragon equivilents.

A young, lean Catguy sets a tray of fried Land-Squid and beer on the table next to a grizzled older catguy. The older catguy pats his grandson on the arm with his only remaining hand and spears a piece of fried Land-Squid with his hook-hand. He bits a hunk of before dismissing his grandson with a curt nod of his head. "So you want to know about the Storm-Guard eh?" He gestures up to the enormous, corroded frame of an Old-Guard. One of its arms ends in a wicked looking harpoon, the other looks like a spray gun but...wrong somehow. "Every year for thirty years it would come up out of the blue and cut 'em down like kelp. Took my wife, and one of my sons. But I got back at it. Left the town, went to Diver's Bay. Learned everything there was to know about Fightin' and Shiny. Built myself a Harpoon gun and skewered the thing in an old sub. That was about oh, 29 years back give or take. Should be a week or so before old Stormy is bound to wake. In any case, said AI travels the high seas with a band of catgirl pirates who are ferocious but mysteriously alluring. Maybe the Shinyslit pirates mentioned above are Feral's catgirls, actually. Feral "himself" is a classical mad scientist fishing up shinies for crazy schemes like BUILDING AN UNSTOPPABLE ARMY OF ROBOTIC MANTA RAYS! Like those weird blind lizards from Avatar (the cartoon one, not the gay furry fanfiction one) except less ugly and not as mean.

I do have some questions, though. How far has the kemomi diaspora spread, and where is it centered? How much of the Earth's land mass remains above sea level? Where exactly (longitude, latitude) do the kemomi live, and what present day location does it correspond to? Are there any larger political powers that have developed, such as alliances or republics? What are they like?

>>
>>21919898
I suppose its based entirely on how you want to play the campaign, ypou could have parts of say, the US or Russia or whatever above sea level but near as I can tell general consensus is that the world is mostly flooded except for some volcanic islands and mountain tops.

As for animals?

So far we have Waddlers, penguins that come in dozens and dozens of breeds (dog analogue)

Land-Versions of Squid, Cuttlefish, and Octopi that use a combination of adapted gills and water bladders to walk around on land. (Sheep, Goat, Cow analogue, kept around for meat and ink. Probably companionship as well. These are some of the most intelligent animals on earth after all.)

Manta-Rays and Sting Rays come in many sizes and are used in many ways (think of them as under water dogs I guess.)

Crabs are another pet, probably come in many sizes, like you could use them as mounts or keep them like large, spindly cats I guess.

Oh and I see no reason not to have Axlotl mounts, maybe have them come in many sizes as well?

Pic related is my stance on Animu and Mango. If you know enough about a series to spot obscure characters on sight I'd say you're a fan. If you go out of your way to learn about something so you can hate it you wind up looking odd.

Anyway yeah. Animals, we gots lots of 'em. Too many for one area. However if we take your suggestion and spread 'em around a bit then things will work out okay.

I'm the guy who created Diver's Bay so I'll say that they breed and T4rain Axlotl hunting hounds and take them on dives, use 'em for security and keep them as companions. (like land squids the new axlotls can do just fine on land if they have water with a few hours reach.)
>>
>>21920387
Maybe make axolotls use those gill fringes more like a catfish does to sense things and detect electrical impulses, meaning they are really good at rooting out still active tech and can sense Oldguards lurking around. Make em sort of the anti-kleptomander if you will. And maybe even give them the flaw of not being able to detect kleptomanders since kleptomanders feed off of electricity, meaning they might lead you right into a kleptomander nest without even realizing it.

okay cool, make axlotls vary in size from say, 10-20 pound versions, then up to 30-50 pound versions, with the biggest being in the 60-100 pound range.

They can stay out of water for extended periods but if they go without being wet for days on end their skin will start to crack and bleed. They don't have gills anymore, just lungs with a very high capacity. Their gill fronds are now sensory devices that can seek out an electric charge.

Kleptomanders devour electricity though, and as a side benefit the muscles that allow them to store electrical energy also shield them from devices and biological senses designed to detect electrical activity.

Sound Fringe Sciency enough?
>>
So if Axlotls have multiple breeds I figure there should be mounts and war axlottls that rip and tear with razor sharp teeth. I'm also envisioning large axlotls with various breeds, some are bred for strength so they can swim around underwater with Divers who are using harpoons as spears during hunts. Others are bred for speed during races, war Axlottls would probably have larger mouths and more teeth. The faster ones would have larger webbing on their feet and longer, stronger tails.

So yeah, war hounds and war horses with some domestic breeds for Axlotl enthusiasts who prefer to have their amphibious friends in a smaller size.

I feel like we are gonna need a feral version of every animal we come up with because we are going to want to domesticate all of them. In fact, beating animals in battle and bringing them back to your village to spruce it up could be part of the more lighthearted variants of the game. Not all the salvage from Dives has to be only Shinies. You could bring back some discoslugs to make your village more festive and increase the population living there or tame a willd axolotl to help you on Dives. That also means you could have wild axolotls that hunt you if you use fancy tech, kinda like when Frodo would use the one ring and all the ringwraiths would know instantly where he was.

There's kinda solution of limiting stat die to solid 3 (they still can go down) and in the event of character having greater Toughness just adding another die (and taking three best) but i am not sure how it differs from dice-turning traits.

I like the idea of flying fish actually gaining the ability to really fly, but they're still primarily water-dwellers. Occasionally, you might see a school of sleek, almost feathered, winged fish suddenly shoot up from the water and migrate to the south.

They could be a delicacy, by being so light and chewy, but hard to keep because they tend to fly away when you try to corral and herd them like other fish.

Seriously, you guys REALLY need to check out The Future Is Wild. It also had Flish, flying fish who dove into water at regular intervals to get food and breath and Forest Flish who lived off the moisture in the humid air around them and only went back to the ocean to spawn.

In fact, the whole last era was about Pangaea II and mostly about the ecosystems developed around tropical shallows and deep seas.

Natural Resources
1: Useful/Rare Animal Life

Level of Order.
Roll 1d6. 1 Is the lowest level of order (Village run by a headman, peopel do asthey please without notable consequences, barring criminal activity of course.) 6 is the highest level of order (Village with clear levels of class and wealth, people rising above their station is frowned on and a person who fails to do their duties faces exile, shunning or similar punishments)

Natural Resources

2: Useful/Rare Plant Life
3: Useful/Rare Salvage

Frowning on "New-Money" is like one of the oldest forms of friction between the upper classes imaginable. I'm american, you american? You know that whole "You decide your station in life" Ideal we're spoon fed as children? It's a relatively new thing and for a real long time attempting to rise above your station was frowned on by the lower classes and the higher classes. Don't see why some stuffy Kemomi wouldn't adopt that notion as well.

Anyway I was just tossing out ideas. The point of the dice chart is to help you generate some ideas to make fluff, not act as a development bible. I was thinking that in typical CATastrophe fashion the only people who would frown on that would be villian material. But hey we can remove it if that clashes too much.

and no 3-4 is where the inhabitants of the settlement have a schedule they stick to. 5-6 is where you have a city run by an actual government.

That's my feel anyway.
>>
>>21931485

Most communities are small villages, there's no need for an organized government. The structure of a settlement should relate to the size of the settlement, and finding a large settlement should be rare in the setting, so you might want to change your rolling mechanic to address that. I like the Diaspora method of rolling 4 Fate dice, it gives a result from -4 to +4 with a nice probability distribution around zero. So you'd have:

Settlement size: -4 (mud hut in the middle of nowhere) to +4 (several oil rigs tied together)
Order: -4 (complete lack of organization, less a settlement as a bunch of people that happen to live near each other but don't care about one another) to +4 (a small town where everyone pokes their nose into everyone elses business or a well-regulated large town with a bureaucracy and everything)

Earless Resources: -4 (practically nothing) to +4 (intact Earless research center)

Environment: -4 (barren wasteland, polluted ecology or similar) to +4 (verdant, fertile, lots of animals and plantlife)
>>
>>21931485
well, yu can leave it at "acual government" and let DM decide, whether it's floating platform of shiney research group, large overwater part of sunken city in which kemo settled or doggirl sparta.
>>
Rolled 2, 1, 2, 2 = 7

>>21931527
Well my setting would probably have 6 large cities with villages sprinkled in between them and trade lanes and stuff.

and its 4 Oil Rigs WELDED Together, Not Tied. It's like a great big government building made of metal and afloat on the high seas.

anyway I like your style. Lets roll some dice and see what happens.

>>21931551
That was my point really. Let the GM roll make 12 settlements and pick out which ones he'll use in game.
>>
Rolled 3, 2, 4, 5 = 14

>>21931566

If you want to simulate a Fate dice roll, use d6 and have 1-2 count as a minus, 3-4 as a 0, and 5-6 as a plus. To illustrate, I'll generate a settlement.
>>
>>21925996

Also, After Man: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/After_Man:_A_Zoology_of_the_Future
>>
>>21931566
So a large Village, or a small town. Probably built in the ruins of several sky scrapers pocking above the waves. I'mma say 8 buildings each with a seperate clan who has a culture based partially around a garbled interpretation of Earless culture and partially around Kemomimi life experiences.

The Town is particularly chaotic, indicating high Nekomimi presence and probably an emphasis on independence and personal strength. Their main export would be plants that they farm, fresh meat and eggs to travellers. (Waddler eggs are probably a favorite food.) Oh and they'd also train a lot of animals. Land-Squid and Rays for under water mounts. Egg-laying Waddlers and several varieties of plants are their food staples.

They do have earless tech, but mostly in the form of computers and holoprojectors formerly used by businesses for presentations. Obviously they do a lot of trading for entertainment like holomovies and music.

continued
>>
Rolled 2, 2, 2, 5, 1, 4, 2, 5, 1, 5, 5, 4 = 38

>>21931580

Summing that result up, that's a +1 Size settlement, slightly larger than average. I'm gonna roll for the other stat groups all together instead of doing one post each for them.
>>
>>21931588
The environment in question isn't heavily polluted. (though their are some pockets that animal and plant life avoid thanks to pockets of copper pollution for instance.) But the buildings of the city they live above have become home to many different kinds of predators so diving for shinies and food is really quite dangerous.
>>
>>21931597

Order: -2. These guys are pretty anarchistic and laid back. Maybe it's a settlement where people traditionally keep to themselves, or they emphasize self-reliance.

Resources: 0. This place isn't rich in shinies, but it's not poor either. They've got enough to get by.

Environment: +3. This place is a fertile breadbasket, with rich coral reefs, kelp fields and maybe even a fish farm. Since the shiny crop is just average, I suppose the farming and fishing is what this settlement is famous for. Maybe they cultivate some particular animal breed, like a surfray that's easy to steer, an axolotl with prettier fringes, or a discoslug strain with exotic coloration. Either way, this is a village that values nature.
>>
>>21931615
Well whether you use d4s or multiple d6 rolls I think its safe to say we have a decent system for generating villages and stuff.

Good on you anon.
>>
>>21931629

If you roll d4s you'll only get a distribution from 0 to +4, so you'll miss the -4 end of the spectrum, but I guess it doesn't matter if you have 0 be the lowest point of the scale. In any case, there you go. Ripped off from Diaspora, but they encourage ripping the system off so I regret nothing.

There's additional bits about generating links to neighboring settlements, like trade routes and such, but I don't think we need bother with that for now.

I'd include settlement generation as a part of character creation in CATastrophe, btw - so that every player can generate a hometown or some place that's important to the character. It helps build up the campaign.
>>
>>21931641
It depends on how heavily you want to go into character creation really. (and yeah you have point, multiple d6s are probably superior to d4s...) As far as large settlements go we already have 2 ends of an extreme.

Star Dust Port is a settlement built on a volcanic island. The Volcano is inactive and the caldera serves as a resevoir for rainwater giving the town an important trade item to sailing ships, along with you know, Land. Land which can be farmed. So there's that too.

Then we have Diver's Bay. A mobile city with a market place built into a conglomerate building made from 4 oil rigs. There's a docking bay in the belly of the market place where Divers can dock their subs or just climb in, pay a toll and hik up to the market place. and you have floating buildings which dock with the core for energy and purified water. The whole mess migrates across the ocean looking for good Diving spots.

So yeah you could go with those or make a homtown. Personal choice really.
>>
You know?
we need similar stuff for "dungeons".

I kinda envisin it as series of rooms, each with its own hazards, treasure tables, etc.
>>
>>21931703

What, you mean like an encounter table for dives? Yeah, I guess that would be useful. I don't think that one needs a bell curve distribution, though.
>>
Well for starters we need to figure out what kind of Dive locations we have in the first place. (no we aren't developing land mutants yet. That can be a good splat book though.)

This also needs to take into account what kind of Dive situation you have.

Lets say you're based out of Star Dust Port. You probably have a sailing ship, some surfboards, or a few Surf-Rays which you can use to go long distances. You need to figure out how to get from point A to point B and how to best use the currents and winds to do it. In all likelyhood you'll be searching out old towns or sunken ships.

if you're on Diver's Bay however you probably have more emphasis on your ability to dive deep rather than on your traveling abilities since you'll probably need a patron of some sort to have any shot at getting to the good stuff during a Dive. Danger is mitigated to one degree 'cause hey, Diver's Bay is just one surfacing action way right? But you're also going to be searching through some pretty dangerous ruins.
>>
>>21931773

I'm thinking dives could have a difficulty rating. Maybe tied to a kind of profit factor (I'm inclined to call it Party Factor because it represents how big a party you will be able to throw when you sell off the loot) - the more difficult the dive, the bigger the profit, obviously, and I guess you could have some tables with complications you could either pick from or roll on to generate a dive. Each complication adds to the PF of the dive, but some complications can be offset by the party's skills and equipment (while still providing PF they don't make the dive more difficult).
>>
>>21931815
I've never been a fan of difficulty ratings, they feel too artificial. But hey, opinions right?

So lets say we have a system built around this Party Factor dealy.

Now we have complications which make things harder, the harder your Dive is the more profit you can pull from it. (Tech, Valuable stuff like pearls or rubies or gold or something. Rare animals, excellent food items...)

But that also means we need things that will mitigate complications. Some of which can be environment, or preperation, some can be player skills, and some can just be a lucky roll.
>>
>>21931853

I think a generator like that would be a DM tool first and foremost. If the players learn every detail of the dive, it would be too easy for them to find counters.

On the other hand... You know, it would be an interesting mechanic if the players could influence the difficulty of the dive by "raising the stakes" and introducing complications. The party gets coordinates to a cache and start planning the dive. The DM can describe some hazards, like "It's going to be deep, and the terrain there is known to be difficult." Here, players can raise the stakes. "Yeah, I know there's a particularly vicious axolotl pack that hunts in these parts!" Ok, that adds to the PF but makes the dive more difficult.
>>

>>
>>21931899
Moight be an interesting mechanic is say, FATE, but I don't think it would work well if I say, retooled Gammaworld 4th ed for CATastrophe. Anyway its an idea.

My point was that if we had a generator we'd need to develop something covering terrain, ecology, tech level, the activity of that tech, and random stuff like sunken ships or I dunno, a downed satellite or something.
>>
>>21931957

I'd have more general categories, leaving it to the DM and party to provide appropriate descriptions.

Environment: -4 (practically impassable) to +4 (full visibility, shinies out in the open)
Tech Activity: -4 (unpowered, needs extensive repair) to +4 (fully active and easy to interact with)
Fauna Disposition: -4 (hostile, will attack with determination and cunning) to +4 (actively friendly, will assist divers)
Tech Disposition: -4 to +4 (see above)

A list of like 100 random encounters (downed satellite, shark pack, roving fairybot, advertising holograms, etc) would be useful, but I'd rather it be a collective effort than write one myself.
>>
So things we have to take into account:

Ecology: Benign or Malicious, and if so to what degree.

Earless Tech: Again, Benign or Malicious, and if so to what degree.

Ruins: Lots of them, some of them, or non at all?

NPCs: Are they helpful, irrelevant, or in direct competition with the PCs?

So that's four things to roll on at least. Think we can rip off diaspora for this?
>>
Lets try this out.
>>
Rolled 5, 5, 5, 2, 1, 5, 5, 4, 6, 4, 1, 3, 4, 2, 1, 4 = 57

damn case sensitive dice roller...
>>
>>21932000

Now, it's easy to look at the table and think "negative results give PF, positive results remove PF". But I reckon even the positive results could be turned to complications. If the shinies are out in the open, it's guaranteed that rival groups will compete with you for them. If the tech is fully powered, that could be a disadvantage if said tech is hostile or rigidly programmed (imagine having to persuade a shopkeeper AI to leave its store if it refuses to believe it's underwater).
>>
>>21932021
+2 on Environment.

+1 on Tech Activity

0 on Fauna Disposition.

-1 on Tech Disposition.

So we have some ruins for an old shopping mall. It's large Mall of America style. It's also water tight thanks to the fforts of some dilligent repair robots. It lights up at night and can be seen for some distance away but nearby building ruins, ship wrecks, and the lay of the land obscure it.

While the repair bots and Zero Point Energy Generators keep the building active it's a shopping mall. All of the really useful stuff is in the flooded off sections, so aside from a few electronics boutiques there isn't that much useful in the way of shiny.

Plenty of clothes and candy, fast food, and similar luxury items though, updated, recycled, and kept fresh according to a dynamic list set by the store's managers and maintained by the Mall's AI.
>>
>>21932025
Those are my thoughts exactly. The PF should be determined by the situations your dice rolls give you, not by numbers.

The Mall I documented down there for instances has a Zero Point Generator so, you could attach a line to it and pull power from it making it a great place to start a settlement.

But all those luxury goods I mentioned are kept under lock and key and guarded by Swat Bots which will put you in the brig and keep you locked up if you try to "shop lift" so having an earlessmancer set up a credit account with the Shop Keepers and providing the oinsite nanofabricators with material for production would be integral if you wanted to make the place a viable looting opprotuinity.,
>>
>>21932044

Nice! Looks like the generator does what it's supposed to. Feel free to add more variables if you feel it needs some.

>>21932060
I like it. Since the mall is well lit, you can bet other groups are making similar plans. Some might take a more straightforward approach of harpooning the swatbots, some might try to sneak or distract the robots with a trained animal.
>>
>>21932077
Exactly, there's dozens of ways a party could handle this. Some might try to get an Eartifcer to find a way to reason with the old guard. Some might try to hack and slash their way through. Some might try some old fashioned sneakthievery.

It would be a great dive to throw at your players after a few ruins where no tech works at all.

Huh so we have a settlement generator and a Dive generator which depend mainly on imagination. I'm okay with this.

I will accept androgynous catboys my dear anon. Just as long as there is some doubt to the gender of the kemomimi in question I am happy.

I mean we're kind of bloated on "cat-girls at the beach" pictures. Which is half the point of the setting yes, but now we have tundra at the poles ('cause some people like snow, and seriously why not?) and one of our major set piecres is a mobile city that consists of floating buildings towed by ships and an enormous market place/docking bay. The other 3 are respectively an island town built on a dead volcano, a town in the antartic tundra, and a tropical way station run by dog-people.

We have room for more than catgirls in bikinis now.
