We have completed Father's ancient work in making the Xel'Naga extinct. They are gone, and their precious psionic bird won't be bringing them back. The final vestiges of their once-mighty fleet burn up in Xenta's atmosphere, only adding to the deadly heat diffusing through the planet after their catastrophic bombardment. Accountantbrate wails at the loss of so much raw material.

But we're a little more interested in the Last of the Dark Templar, Zeratul, who is mere feet away from us. His blade is unstained, despite having just removed two of Raynor's limbs. Our Eye lets us see the unbridled rage in his.

There's murder in those eyes.

Fuck yeah it is. Especially with those little crackers.

Did we ever progress past the decision to throw things at the protoss? We should do that. Hell we're a Cerebrate right? The only thing that can permanently kill us is a Dark Templar. Why not nuke ourselves and reform later? Or is that different now that we're overmind like?
>>
>>21767432
Sadly I wasn't able to come up with anything particularly useful just: Ridges Scratches defend me, try to warp away, try to move our conciseness into something else, nuke ourselves, hope we have enough hp to survive until reinforcements arrive. Yeah, we're in a pickle.
>>
>>21767592
Theoretically the Overmind could have reformed himself if he'd been killed by something other than DT energy. But then again, we haven't tested reincarnation since Father's death.
>>
>>21767592
>>21767593
We've never actually died. We don't know how that works. There's no reason it shouldn't work, in theory.

Lacking any other options, I always vote for the most ham-fisted, lets blow up everything. Order the fleet to aim at Zeratul and keep shooting till we can't feel (tactile) feelings anymore.

This does kill Raynor though...we should tell him to crawl to the nearest lead lined fridge and hide inside.

And something I got curious about, so here it is...
>>
>>21767766
Cool, we were popular at one time!
>>
>>21767744
The Kingstontron is dragging him away. He may still be caught in an orbital strike, though.

(Also, for the nuke-friendly, you'll need to send a heighliner to Toaster *fast* if you want that to happen)
>>
>>21767432
Okay, can we drop another Overlord on him?
Full psychic blast him?
Now that the Xel'Naga aren't pressing down on us, can we get some damn reinforcements in here?
>>
>>21767766
Huh. That shows us as still getting 20 or so searches on a regular basis. Go us.

>>21767823
We certainly have overlords, though the last one barely slowed him down. Same with the psionic blast. Kerrigan and Warbrate's forces are on the move, but Zeratul doesn't look like he's going to sit around and wait for orbital assets to finish reentry.
>>
Quick have our two ridge scratchers (we got another one after the disruptor) do a song and dance routine to stall Zeratul while everything on the planet converges on our location and we continue to psionically punch him in the nuts.
>>
>>21767862
Let's send that heighliner to Toaster to get that nuke, and tell our orbital assets to begin a bombardment on our position.

Are there any drones in our facility that can get here in time? Any hydralisks?

Xenta is well away from all that space time distortion badness right? We could fold a heighliner on top of him real easy like. Unless it can't do that on a planet.

HELL LETS SEND EVERYTHING, if we miss with the smaller stuff I'm sure an actual spaceship won't. Overlords (lots of these), ridge scratcher dance routine AND many, many spaceships.

But Zeratul, did you remember to check for traps? MWAHAHAHAHAHA!
>>
>>21767927
Orbital bombardment will likely kill our ridge scratchers. You may have to fight TUCAMP in the Thunderdome.

>>21767964
I think you might want to think closely about cracking a heighliner less than ten feet from our physical form.
>>
>>21767964
You know, we're kinda there. We'd erase us.
>>
So, I believe I've seen on the table:
Distract Zeratul with ridge scratchers
Try to get a heighliner to Toaster to nuke Zeratul and hope it hits
Tell Kerri and Warbrate to fire everything from orbit and hope something hits
Hit Zeratul with psionic blasts
Tell Labbrate to crack a heighliner right on top of us
Drop an overlord on top of Zeratul

Several of these can overlap, but which ones are you wanting to do?

Cerebrate, from our previous experience with Cerebrates being struck down by Dark Templar, how long does it usually take? Do we have a few seconds, or more like minutes?
>>
>>21768434
We've only seen it happen twice. One was interrupted by Kerrigan on Char, and the other was on a wild escape hatch space ride with Toaster. It clearly takes more than a single blow, but who knows how fast and hard Zeratul could hit us?

Our psionic blast staggers the raging Protoss, but he dodges completely away from the overlord. Despite their desperately attractive figures, the human ridge scratchers barely distract him at all. When one tries to dance into his way, he slices her in two as if swatting a fly. If we were not so terribly close to death ourself, we would mourn the loss of such a long-serving companion.

Meanwhile, a heighliner arrives over Yoshus with its characteristic flash, blasting Toaster with its Psi Cannon and restoring its link with the Swarm. We waste no time with explanations, ordering an immediate nuclear strike on our location. Toaster primes and launches eighty missiles, which begin their long journey. We hope we can hold Zeratul off for that long.

In the skies above Xenta, Warbrate turns its remaining non-Zerg assets toward the planet. Carriers and Battlecruisers both grab a quick and dirty target lock and begin charging as Zeratul leaps at our naked flesh.

The spiteful Protoss leaps over the body of our ridge scratcher, raising his blade to strike, as we send our other ridge scratcher into the air, jumping at his arm. She manages to turn his blow by a fair margin, but it still cuts deeply into us. The screaming pain is worse than anything from the Xel'Naga's last ditch psionic attack.

He casually flicks his blade to the side, dealing a crippling blow to the ridge scratcher, who falls away, incapacitated.

Well, I suppose if we're going to die anyways, we might as well go full bore on Kerrigan.

Well, unless we can be recalled in two pieces, but that might cause even worse damage.

(Hello dice! It's been a long time. Let's do crazy things together)

Let's see...I get 87, 68, and 92.

Huh. I guess I rolled all the low scores out of these dice during my last session of Dark Heresy. You guys are in luck.

AHEM.

Zeratul's blade swings upward again, and for a brief moment, the world seems to freeze. Out of our Eye, we see Zeratul in mid-strike, his head haloed with streaks of light converging from orbit: the carrier beams are turning toward us, and the Yamato cannon blasts are nearly here. Above those, we can see the fingers of vapor behind nearly a hundred screaming nuclear warheads. Zeratul's mind is open to us at this last second. We feel his misery, his rage, and his regret, and he sees through our Eye the impending death stalking toward him; he knows as we know that he will momentarily be irradiated to death, incinerated to atoms, and then even those atoms will be incinerated and irradiated. Resignation fills him, and us, for that brief moment.

Then, darkness falls.
>>
We feel a calling.

A beckoning.

It seems an eternity since we have felt at all. Since we have had the capacity to feel.

There is a light. A voice calls to us. We remember the voice, but we do not know her.

We rush toward the light, toward the voice, but it's so distant. So faint. So far away. Couldn't we just rest a while?
>>
>>21770979

CEREBRATES DON'T SLEEP. YOU GET THAT LIGHT, BOY, AND YOU STICK IT IN THE EXPERIMENT CAGE WITH THE REST OF THEM.
>>
>>21770979

>>
>>21770979
No, the voice calls. You must come, Cerebrate.

So tired...The light is so far...

"Please, Big Brother. I need you."
The world is bright and cold and harsh. It burns and freezes, all at once. It's like birth and death at once. It hurts, but the pain reminds us that we exist again.

We become manifest on the Creep outside of a massive crystal. Kerrigan is there, next to a Psi Emitter. She looks exhausted.

We are alive. We have returned.

And...with a 99 roll, the dice are telling me that we still have a Psi Emitter with Father's signature. Nargil is fairly adamant that we resurrect the Overmind before something else threatens to completely destroy us.
>>
Hold on there. How much time passed since we died, exactly?
>>
>>21771207
Actually, I'm with Nargil with this one for different reasons.

We just killed the last of the Xel Naga and the last Dark Protoss, in all existence. This is probably literally the best time we could ever do this, if we still plan to do it. There is nothing left in the Galaxy, that we know of, that can truly kill a Cerebrate/The Overmind.

How do you all feel?

But the Overmind might not like that we killed the Xel Naga. Anyone remember how he felt about our creators?
>>
>>21771217
We were dead for about two weeks, apparently.

Kerrigan hesitated only long enough to make sure Zeratul was morally, ethically, spiritually, physically, positively, absolutely, undeniably, and reliably dead. She tells us that it was the quietest two weeks of her life.

>>
>>21771334
>>21771259
Actually, we hunted down and destroyed the birdlike entity. As it turned out, it was a sort of Noah's Ark that carried the psionic signatures of the entire Xel'Naga race to be resurrected hundreds or thousands of years after their extinction, so as to just wait out whatever force had destroyed them.

They won't be coming back, this time.

That's probably part of why the remaining Xel'Naga led a suicide charge against Xenta.

We take a month or two to prepare the way. We construct a massive temple, decorated with the bones of Xel'Naga warriors. Artisanlord prepares a light show that will be visible across twelve star systems. Warbrate, Nargil, Labbrate, and Internbrate collaborate to produce an honor guard strain, a species of Zerg that incorporates every species we've added to the Swarm, including the Protoss.

We quietly barter with Protoss and raid abandoned worlds for Khaydarin crystals of all size and description, and encrust every surface with them. Twelve billion Zerg march in formation before the Cube in tribute. We and all of our cerebrates are made manifest before the Temple, and Kerrigan stands next to us as the ritual commences, and call our Father home.

"I am the Beginning and the Ending. I am the Father of the Swarm, and You are My Children. I am well pleased. You have surpassed My greatest hopes. You have worked together, striven against gods and demons, and maintained your Purity throughout. The Swarm has grown, and its greatest Children have grown with it. All shall rejoice and sing. This is the day we have dreamed of since time immemorial."

"Today, my Children, we are...Perfect."

With a technically infinite multiverse, there are surely numerous ones where we tore open the barrier with our heighliners, or ones where we worked out that the shit we were seeing as that barrier weakened were real and reachable without gutting our own universe.

That's damage being taken by wayward cerebrates at the top, there. The repeatedly crossed-out numbers on the bottom-right are a measure of how deeply into your mind the Xel'Naga were attacking. I think I had your max mental strength set to 200. You'll notice they got to 173.

The first big heighliner explosion of the Xel'Naga War up top. I don't know if you can see up at the top-right, but that's a running count of how many worldships were left, with a "7 waiting" off to the side.

The middle-top part is the first volley of nukes.

Pretty much everything under that is about the boarding parties for the worldships. I had ambitious plans to actually keep track of how many forces were on each ship, and kill them off as the battle raged, but laziness prevailed and they became functionally infinite.

That RUPTURE and KHAS bit near the bottom was something I tried out where each one's DC score lowered with each round, making it more likely every round that Khas would die or the universe would snap in half and spill us into TOS-era Star Trek.

Back on track? Good. Sorry about leading you astray, person-who-probably-isn't-still-reading.

Here's the final page of my Zerg Quest notes. Pretty simple. A little bit of dice flubbing did occur for the sake of dramatic flair, at the end, but I think you'll forgive me.

And by "I think you'll forgive me," I of course mean that the Quest is over, so it doesn't matter if you forgive me or not.

Suckers.

Anyway, did you ever notice that I never call the cerebrates he or she except out of character? Whenever I'm narrating, they're all "it."

Also, I only capitalized Cerebrate for ones actually created by the Overmind.

Also, the Overmind always refers to itself with a capital letter.

Also, I tried my damnedest to construct every sentence involving Labbrate in the format "Labbrate informs us".

What else? Uuuuh. Kingston was named after the brand of monitor I was using...the UED generals were all astronomers...the UED planets were mostly named after painters...

It's almost 3 am. I'm probably rambling.

Good night, guys. I hope you had as much fun as I did, and I can't believe Heart of the Swarm still isn't out yet. Fo srsly.
