It is the year 2114 CE, You are LT Norman Bridges, of the Allied Colonial Forces Special Operations Division (SOD). A child of the Far colony world Arcadia, which was destroyed by the hostile imperialist race, the Progenitors, in what is called the First Contact War. After your special operations training, you joined the Special Projects Division, and PROJECT AEON, which was developing Psionic powers in humans. You are a distinguished combat veteran and recon and psionic specialist, who dabbles in card tricks, alien ruins and mystery novels.

You have been assigned to OPERATION SNAKE TRAP, where you will join a group of SOD Operatives in a strategic reconnaissance mission of a Pirate outpost on the planet TBhE-088917 "Snake Pit" for possible Progenitor collaboration, and take measures as necessary, and are en route to the colony of New Concord to join your team aboard the Utah-class Stealth Frigate Shrike.

The subtle jolt of the drop from FTL awakens you. After making yourself and all your equipment secure, you decided to sleep the rest of the trip to Crescendo Naval Base, since who knows when you'll get an opportunity to sleep for longer than an hour or two in the future. Your hunch if proven correct when the pilot speaks on the intercom a few moments later, saying, "We're crossing New Concord interdiction line now, Lieutenant. ETA, 15 minutes." You affirm you heard the message, unstrap yourself and move up to the cockpit door, and pop it open. The space is small, barely room for you to stand in the connecting passage, and the pilots don't have room to do much else besides sit. You look out the cockpit and make out the silhouette of the orbiting Crescendo Naval Base against the silver-blue hue of New Concord. The pilot leans around in their seat and looks at you. "Morning LT," They tilt their head, as if listening to something, then continue. "Crescendo Traffic Control is parking us in a shuttle bay adjacent to the dock they have the Shrike in. ETA, 10 minutes." You nod, as your armor's communication suite links up to the Crescendo's military network, and the greater planetary network of New Concord. You'll be able to access data now as you need it, until you leave system again.

what would this give us?
>>
>>21745049

New Concord is sizable, and Crescendo is a Colonial Naval base, so basically full internet, plus military files. You can look up anything specific (That isn't above your pay grade) you want, or just generally skim for current events and things.
>>
>>21745064
Oh, lets check for current events. Maybe there will be something interesting.
Presumably we already got all the info about Spake Pit and the mission briefing?

You leave the cockpit, and go back to your seat, and skim the newsfeed for the latest events. Nothing much of note at the moment, at least nothing public, though you do take note of several systems where skirmishes were had with Progenitor ships, and which colonies are now having troop build-ups in preparation for invasions. You decide to skim military new bulletins later for news which might not be released to the general public. The FTL-shuttle begins to decelerate, as it approaches Crescendo, and you get a welcome message from the station AI. There is a gentle shake as the shuttle sets down, and the rear door begins to lower. The pilot comes on the intercom. "Here's your stop, LT. We're waiting for an outbound priority transport, so don't stick around too long." You shout back your thanks, and depart the craft.

You spot an observation window, and walk over to it, and look out onto the Shrike in dock. The Utah-class ships are a little less boxy than most CAF ships, with a more aerodynamic look, vaguely reminiscent of a giant shuttlecraft, due to their frequent use in atmospheric operations. You wouldn't call her "beautiful" by any measure, but the sleek, radar-absorbent hull has a certain charm. You can vaguely make out her articulated railguns on "wing" mounts, the classes primary weapon besides the torpedo complement.

(Information about Snake Pit and general operation details were already provided. Specific briefing will be given when you link up with your team)

After a few moments of admiring, your communications system opens up, and a gentle female voice, with a slight hint of an Italianate accent speaks to you. "Welcome, Lieutenant Bridges. I am Crescendo, the system AI for this base. You have been assigned to the TCAS Shrike, which is in dock 43, as you can see. Unit Commander MacPherson is in command of the SOD team for OPERATION SNAKE TRAP, as is waiting for you in the dock. Do you require additional information or directions?"

"Directions to Commander MacPherson please, Crescendo." You respond. "It is done, Lieutenant." Replies the voice, then fades away. MacPherson become highlighted in your HUD with an icon in the distance, around the opposite side of the dock from you which must be the loading area. Also provided is a virtual line on your display, guiding you toward the proper location. You tromp through the plated halls of the base, returning the salutes you get from NCOs and enlisted personnel you run into.

After short walk, you come up to Dock 43, which seems to be alive with activity. You bypass it, and approach MacPherson, who is also wearing Gen 3 FAFNIR armor in the Recon configuration, and has a DMR strapped to his chest. As you stop to salute, you notice in addition to his rank and SOD markings, the raven crest of the Headhunters is stenciled on his armor. "Commander." He returns the salute, and acknowledges you. "Lieutenant, glad you could make it. You're our last arrival." He pauses to glance at the Shrike, then back at you. "Ship's undergoing final preparations, which will take a few more minutes. Step over to the waiting are with me, I'll introduce the team, and give the briefing there." You nod and follow him as he walks away.
>>
>>21746000

You enter the small waiting area to find four waiting people. Three are SOD operatives in the SpecOps armor, a man and two women, judging by their builds, though one of the women has her helmet off, revealing a short ponytail you're not sure how she fit into the helmet. The man is carrying a multiple grenade launcher, numerous 40mm shells, and you can see an EOD patch on his armor, while the other two have SOD Carbines, like you. The fourth figure stands out the most however. While you and the Commander are both above 180cm in your armor, in theirs, they stand clear of 200cm. The GEN 4 FAFNIR system make determining the MYRMIDON's gender, but from the posture and body-language, you'd guess female. She has LT markings light you, and her armor is configured for sniping, with some kind of optic attachment that drops down over the visor. Also, the 14.5mm Anti-Materiel rifle was probably a dead give away.

The commander closes the door. The waiting area has clear windows, but seems mostly sound-proof. "Alright, boys and girls, we're all here. Since some of you missed 'em, introductions." He gestures. "This is Lt. Bridges, Special Projects Division, PROJECT AEON, and he'll be our Psionic specialist." You nod at the others. "Lieutenant," the commander gestures from you to the others, "This is Storm Trooper Chapman, SPD Recovery, our demolitions specialist," He gestures at the EOD NCO, "Operative Ingram, also Recovery" the woman with her helmet on, "Operative Kent, SPD Operations." The woman with her helmet off takes advantage of the pause to cut in. "If you don't mind being less-than-official, I prefer Dr. Kent." The Commander nods, and continues "The Doctor is a salvage and ship systems engineer who's been examining Progenitor systems for several years now." Then he turns to the EOS Lieutenant. "And this is Lieutenant Angel, Enhanced Operations Soldier Division, PROJECT MYRMIDON. She'll be our sniper." "Angel's not my name," she says, "But I'm not supposed to give out my name, so use it all you like." You nod at her, and then the commander continues. "Alright, before we start this, I want to make this clear. I was told to plan this op as a hypothetical two weeks ago, and 72 hours ago, I was told to assemble a team for deployment ASAP. Lt. Bridges here was the only one I ask for specifically, and that's only because they gave me a shortlist of AEON personnel to pick from. But, you were all sent to me by Special Operations Command for a reason, and even if I didn't ask for you, I asked for your skills. Now, any questions?"

"If I'm not skipping ahead sir," You interject, "What are we expecting there? We have any preexisting intel?" The Commander walks over to the waiting room screen, taps a something on his wristcomp, and accesses the display. "No direct intel, which is part of our operation. The information leak was correlated with some data Fleet was gathering about pirate attacks in the area." He taps some more. "We've triangulated three pirate cutters to the Snake Pit system," A galactic map shows up on the display, and zooms in on the system Snake Pit is in. "Smaller craft with a crew compliment of 20-40, but one larger one, about the size of light frigate, with a crew of 30-50. He continues, "Now, while that might sound a little serious for a six man squad, that's what she's for," He juts a thumb at the Shrike. "Now, we have no information on the ground. Depending on the conditions and what tech, if any, the Progenitors have loaned them, the Shrike may be able to make a stealth run for some decent visual inspection. If not, it'll just be orbital drone pictures. No idea on possible hostile numbers, but figure maximum crew for each ship, then probably another 50% of that in relief crew and support." "That's like 200 guys," says Chapman. "I brought a goodie bag, Commander, but I really hope we're not planning on shooting all of them ourselves if it comes to that." The commander raises a reassuring hand, "The Shrike has a compliment of 48 marines should we need to make an assault, and she has ample orbital strike capability." He pauses, and after nobody raises further questions, he says "Alright, I'll begin the brief in full, if there's nothing further."
>>

When no further objections are raised, the commander continues, tapping some more. The display zooms in further, to show simulated images of Snake Pit from orbit. "Alright, Snake Pit is classified as terrestrial, Near-earth gravity, temperature and pressure, and with a breathable, but hazardous atmosphere. At sea level, which is a large percentage of the planet, density is such that O2 and CO2 levels are too high for human comfort, and a smattering of toxic volcanic gasses. So, environment seal is to be maintained until we get up into the mountains, which is the only place anyone can logistically build anything capable of holding spacecraft. We'll be dropped in upper-atmo from the Shrike, then hike closer to the base. Distance depends on how good their passive detection systems are. After we're ground side, the Shrike will return to a position in the middle of nowhere of the system and keep an eye on comings and goings, but be close enough to bail us out if shit gets bad. Snake Pit doesn't have any interdiction as far as we know, so the ship will probably be able to jump in and park right in the Atmosphere. Primary objective is to ID the base, determine presence of Progenitor materiel or personnel, and wait for orders if confirmed." The commander pauses for a moment, and his helmet pans around the room, looking at all of you. "This operation is pretty text book, which probably means it'll be a shitstorm before the day is over. You all volunteered, so if you don't think this is a good idea, go home now. Wont be able to once we get on that frigate." Nobody says anything. "Alright, we've still got a few minutes before the Shrike boards. Talk amongst yourselves, I'm going to settle some supply issues. Command is giving us four ordinance containers in case shit gets real, any requests?" Angel makes sure a second AM rifle is added to the list.

>Wat do?
>>
>>21747255

For reference, Ordinance containers would pack serious SHTF heavy weapons to be dropped or otherwise delivered to you in case of dire need. If you want to request something, you can ask for:

>40mm Grenade Launcher
>14.5mm Anti-Materiel Rifle
>Minigun
>Flamethrower
>Reusable Rocket Launcher
>Man-Portable Railgun
>Tactical Nuke
>>
>>21747504
Tac Nuke sounds interesting.

Other than that, get to know our team.
>>
>>21747504
Hm. Are we trained to use those weapons?
>>
>>21747702

You're special operations. You're at least basically trained in pretty much all military hardware, and and better practiced at some (Like the AM Rifle, which was actually one of the load-out options).
>>
>>21747756
But we already have a sniper... Maybe get the nuke, but allow the other guys their pick first. Most of the weapons seem to be too unweildy for a guy that needs to be on the frontlines to work his magic.

Before the Commander leaves, you say, "Sir, I believe it would be in our best interests to pack at least one Tactical Nuke in case we need something other than the Shrike's nuclear warheads." The Commander nods, and says "I'll do that, Lieutenant." Chapman looks up at you from where he took a seat, and says "LT, you're a man after my own heart." After a couple seconds of pause, as all the other members of the team relax, he says, "So, PROJECT AEON. How's that working out for you?" You shrug. "Pretty good I guess. First few weeks were a little freaky, but I'm stable now, and I'm not a sensory expert, so I don't deal with a lot of weird shit unless I'm trying. I know some guys who needed psych evals after their gene therapy." Dr. Kent perks up from where she was standing, talking to Ingram. "What kind of abilities do you have, then? I'm an astrophysicist, but Psionics is a fascinating field." Maybe if you weren't used to special forces, you'd be bothered by how casual she was with someone who out-ranks her, but you shrug it off, and answer. "Some basic telepathy, I can move object with my mind, but only close up, and can form barriers to stop objects, and I can boost my focus and concentration by using it." Angel speaks from the corner of the room, where she's checking her rifle. "Handy. I haven't heard much about the other EOS departments, but AEON seems pretty productive. Psionics are a bitch in the field." Clearly she's talking about enemy psi-users.

"You're fond of high yield explosions, Trooper?" You ask Chapman. "Yes sir. I was an EOD technician for New Concord's militia before the war. I enlisted with SOD because they pay better and offered me larger explosions. I have yet to be disappointed. And while the salvage work me and the doc," He jabs a thumb at Kent, "do of out of Crescendo isn't as exciting, I still do a fair amount of 'un-recovery', if you know what I mean." He even does the air quotes. "Nothing pops like a the fusion plant on a cruiser, sir. Except maybe an alien reactor on one of their fuckhueg ships." You nod, and turn to Kent.

>>21748210
>>21748411

"So, Doctor of astrophysics, huh? How'd you end up here?" You ask her. She shrugs a little. "I finished my education just after the war started, before most of us in the Near Colonies knew about it." She pauses, then says, "I'm from Londinum, by the way." "Arcadia." You respond, simply. The room goes silent for a couple of seconds, and if you weren't inside environmentally regulated armor, you'd say it was colder. "I see." She replies. "Well," Kent continues, "While I was looking for a job, the news broke, and SOD came knocking on my door looking for 'brilliant young minds'. With the way things were going, I was probably going to find myself in a green collar job anyway, so I signed on. I barely passed Special Operations School, and after some time doing some intern-level gruntwork on Aegis Base I was shipped out here to help SPD sift through Progenitor wrecks for useful technology. It's repetitive work, which is sometimes interesting, and I only rarely get shot at. I get great amusement from looking at tech which would probably make my professors' heads spin. One of these days I'm hoping to score a desk job and write a thesis that'll blow them all out of the water."
>>

I continue to amaze myself at how I always manage to be JUST over the field limit. All I removed was

"Good luck with that, Doctor. Personally, I feel like any day I haven't killed a few aliens with their own psychic powers is a wasted day." Kent shrugs, but you're pretty sure you hear a faint chuckle from Angel's external speakers as she checks her rifle, then loads it. Afterward, she re-attaches it to her armor. "You can do worse than the doctor, LT," Says Chapman. He looks over at Ingram and says "No offense, ma'am," he turns back to you, "But Ingram here is green, fresh from Special Operations Academy." Ingram seems to stiffen. "I'll admit I don't have any combat experience, but I've got the same training as you guys." She says, a little heated. He put up a hand reassuringly. "It's fine, Operative. We all started somewhere." You feel a little worried about bringing a rookie on what could turn into a combat mission, but if she's an SPD Operative, her training is solid.

>>21749198

Shortly after, the commander returns. "Alright, ride's squared. Everyone do a final equipment check, then come on-board. There's no stops or u-turns once the ship is underway, so if you forget something, you'll have to deal with it." Everyone nods or otherwise responds, then does some checks of their equipment, as do you. With that handled, the six of you pass through the primary airlock of the Shrike, into the ship. It seals behind you. "Unit Commander MacPherson, the captain would like to speak to you in the CIC." Says a female voice on the intercom. The slightly electronic edge to the voice tells you that it's probably the ship's AI, who handles the heavy mathematics calculations and system micromanagement for the crew.

As you walk through the halls of the Shrike, you feel the ship detach from the dock, and start accelerating. You pass some crewman going about their business, but most seem to be at a station. You eventually find your way to the CIC, which reminds you of most CIC/Bridge area's you've seen on TCA vessels. The centerpiece of the room is a holograph table which displays appropriate tactical information (Currently a schematic of the Shrike), with stations for the CO and XO right by, where they can issue commands and view additional data. As you and the squad walk onto the bridge, the captain of the vessel is waiting, and what looks to be his XO. The captain salutes, then sticks out a hand to MacPherson. He's a younger man, with a close cropped haircut that makes him look more like a marine than a naval officer. "Good to see you, Unit Commander. Commander Lawrence Holden, at your service." MacPherson shakes, and introduces the squad as you all salute the Commander. "This is my Executive Officer, Lt. Commander Valentine Lancaster." The woman beside him, who appears to be about the same age, with short auburn hair also salutes you.

You notice that the both of them, and all the other bridge officers, are carrying sidearms, something that would be unheard of five or six years ago. The captain focuses his attention back to your group. "Just wanted to welcome you aboard, and make sure you didn't need anything from me and my crew before we set out." He is interrupted by a female voice you recognize as the AI. "FTL jump to destination plotted, Commander. We'll be crossing out of New Concord interdiction in less than five minutes." "Thank you, Shrike." He responds, then looks over at his seat's display. "Trip is about five. You have the run of the ship, since you all have higher security clearance than me. You can set up in forward observation if you need somewhere private."

Also, practice Psi powers by levitating a spare bit of metal, or failing that someone's sidearm. Just a little bit, don't want to be a thief.

Ask the XO about the sidearms if no rationale is immediately obvious. Double check everything to prepare for the mission. After that, maybe relax with a novel for a bit.

While the rest of your team disperses, mostly to set up shop in the observation deck it looks like, and the two commanders go to discuss things in the Conference Room off the CIC, you turn to the XO, who is minding the bridge now, and decide to test a hunch. "So," You say, as respectfully as you can manage for someone who ranks higher than you, "Boarding actions are so bad bridge officers are carrying sidearms?" She looks at you, as if having only realized you were still standing there, then nods. "Aye. Bridge Officers, and most of the engineers. Quite frankly, if most of the enlisted men weren't terrible shots, we'd be passing out guns to all of them. I've been through a boarding action or two. Heavies and Valkyries are bad enough, but if your engines are stopped, the tougher Valkyries and the Adjutants like to just teleport over the short distance into about anywhere." Well, shit. You hadn't thought of that, since teleportation is a Psi Talent that nobody in AEON is any good at due to it's complexity. You can't imagine leaping across space with it, even at short distances to a steady target. The Ship AI, Shrike, interrupts, forming a holographic avatar of a bronze-light, into the shape of a woman with aquiline features and a feathered dress and vaguely bird-like hairstyle. "Commander Holden has also taken additional precautions. In addition to sufficient assault rifle and SMG stocks for the marine detachment, the bridge and engineering sections have emergency CAWS Shotguns in reach in case of boarding." LCDR Lancaster rolls a shoulder. I'll give Holden one thing, he's the first CO who told me I had take a shotgun qual before I could join his ship."

Well fuck. I hope the bridge is well armored against bullets ricocheting off walls or tearing up the hull.

Given that these are combat vessels the bridge would have to be, yeah? It's the most prominent target on the ship.

Done talking with the XO, you decide to follow your squad mates to the observation deck, which is a relatively spacious area build onto the front of the ship using armored windows, so you can look out at the universe, not that' it's much use when your in FTL, which the Shrike is by the time you reach there. Somebody has accessed the media library, however, and instead of the black void that is space while traveling via FTL, the room is displaying an orbital image of Earth. With nothing better to do, you pull out one of your signal flares, and begin levitating it with Psychokinesis for practice, and to the amusement of the other SOD operatives. While you do this, you have your armor run another diagnostic and sync with the Shrike's communication systems. After the armor, you begin checking your weapons and securing them, while also levitating the signal flare around the room and having it do maneuvers like loop de loops. After that, you settle in and access the latest Richard Falcon retro-noir novel you've been wanting to read and clock in a few hours. Somewhere along the trip, the Unit Commander returns, bearing ration blocks, which you make sure to eat, because they are delicious and nutritious. As the Shrike approaches the system of Snake Pit, you feel prepared for the mission.

And here I was hoping for axe fighting and psychic shenanigans. Ask her what heavies and adjutants were packing in terms of weapons and how this "tele-porting" works.
>>
>>21750729

The 10mm ammunition used in the sidearms and SMGs lacks enough energy to completely penetrate deck plates and vital components. No such guarntee for the 7.62 in assault rifles, or the 5.8 AP ammunition your carbine uses. However, like >>21750776 said, the CIC and the Reactor Room are the most heavily armored sections of this, and almost any, ship.

>>21750898

Are you kidding? This is a military space ship, corridors are way to tight for halberds like that. As for teleporting, it's a psionic ability that involves compressing the space between two points to zero, or moving your matter from one point to another or something. Humans have a hard time doing it because it takes a lot will, concentration and a bit of thinking to manage it. Most can only do short distances or inaccurate "jumps".

As for standard issue progenitor weapons, Norm would know this. Heavies pack Plasma Cannons (Relatively short range weapons that shoot melty star stuff which kind of explodes) or Particle Repeaters (Medium range full auto weapon that shoots fast moving particles of energy) for boarding, with Shredders (Close-Quarters weapon that fires tiny diamondoid flechettes) or monofilament hatchets as back-up. Valkyries as the Progenitor's most elite units, would pack Psionics, Monofilament swords, particle guns and energy blades built into their armor, and either a Shredder or Plasma Pistol (even shorter range star juice gun which explodes less) as a side arm, and heavier weapons depending on what kind of mission their on or where they came from. Adjutants usually pack energy swords build into their armor and energy projection guns (Medium range beamy-guns that fire continuous beams for more death and cutting)

So yeah, calling it a night here. Sorry we didn't get to the actual mission yet, but again, slow day. Next time we will totally begin with the air drop to Snake Pit, and shit can get real. Next thread wont be until Friday, at least. Sorry, but I have school. I'll be here to handle general questions/comments/suggestions most of the night though.

Thank you kind Anon. Many of these images have been saved and will return again in later threads, hopefully in some kind of appropriate context, but possibly just because I think they are cool.

>>21754173

Psh, like anything important happened in this thread.

Okay, well, actually, I hope it lasts because it'll be a long time before I do the next thread and I'll need a way to remember all the names I made up.

Anyway, going to bed now, smell you jerks later.
