Either that or she's hoping they kill her. You really couldn't tell which it was.

Part of the trouble is that she's not really checking in with you. Tower seems to know when she's coming and going, so someone higher up- probably that fucking colonel- is well aware of what's going on, but you're completely in the dark.

Then again, that could also be because for the last day or so, now, you haven't done anything much yourself.

It's freezing outside- you spare a brief thought for the poor sons of bitches up in the pocket- while they're secure, again, they aren't getting out right now, and they don't have the luxury of several large, well-insulated buildings with central heat.

The the hangar doors are mostly closed- opened just enough for a witch to come and go. Of course, there's no reason to open them wider anymore- the F-14 is just a memory now, and no one needs the space. Frank's old ground crew was moved out to assist the marine units at the national guard post by the airport, as was his old ordinance crew.

Inside, Katya stands at a table, loading belts of linked ammunition into box magazines for her weapon, while techs work to do shortened maintenance on her strikers. The pair of 14s she uses now are probably rapidly approaching the end of their service life, but she doesn't seem to even notice that. Her weapon's seen better days too- you note a discarded barrel laying to one side, a new one ready to replace it after she's done loading.

“Gentlemen, why don't you go take five?” You say, your voice making it clear that your suggestion to the ground crew wasn't a suggestion at all. Surprised, they look at you, then at Katya, before heading back to the offices along the side of the hangar.

It's the second time today that you've found yourself hugging a fellow witch as she bawls her eyes out. At least Katya's shorter than you, if just by a hair- it's easier to balance. Then again, she's got a deathgrip in your midsection, and it's apparent that she doesn't intend to let go for a while.

“It's ok, Katya.” You soothe, shifting your feet slightly as she slumps against you.

It takes her a few minutes, but gradually, the sobs wracking her frame subside.

“She was sitting there when I left for my first patrol, and was still there. When I landed just a few minutes ago. She has not moved?” She asks, wiping here eyes on her sleeve.

You shake your head. “I don't think so.” you say. “She's... she's pretty far gone, Katya. She looked up to Frank in a big way.”

“Why?” Katya asks. “She is a witch too, is she not?”

You shrug. “She can't operate strikers.” You say. “So if she is a witch, she's not like we are. She always wanted to fly though, and Frank gave her that.”

The sheer, unmitigated sorrow in her voice strikes a chord in you. It's the kind of sadness a person has when they lose everything, and they're still trying to figure out what's left to go on for.

Hearing it come out of the little fifteen year old is devastating- even when you've already had your chance to cry.

Without thinking, you sweep her up into a tight hug, augmenting your strength a little with your magic.
