For the tenth time, your helmet fogs up. Must be one of the older ones. Better remember to stop by Alice's workshop and get her to make a new one with psionic shielding. You add it to a growing mental "to-do" list. At least this one's easy.

"Listen up!" you yell, trainees able to hear you over both the radio and through their own helmets. With satisfaction, you note that they turn to you quickly. Maybe. Hard to see with this fog. "What are we doing today?" you ask.

One of the closer girls raises her hand. "Combat training!" she answers. Damn, you ought to know them by voice by now. You think it might be—

"Is that how you answer your commander, Wooding?" comes a certainly familiar voice. Lt. Rae Caulders, sitting out and watching from afar.

"I apologize, Ma'am. I believe we are conducting combat training today, Chief Kuykendall!" Karina Wooding answers. Huh. Well, at least you're somewhat justified in not recognizing her. You've had your hands full with the other trainees for the past week.
>>
"That's right, Seaman Wooding. Combat training." Combat training. This is more Rae's field of expertise, but the two of you decided it'd be better to let you take the mantle of the authority figure. At least, for now. You glance towards two shapes you think you recognize. Natsumi Ogawa and Elizabeth Boser. You can't make out their faces, but you can imagine just how blank and distant they should be.

"Hhnnnehehehehe..." someone snickers inappropriately over the radio. Unfortunately, you recognize that voice. "...all fogged up..." Clare Harton mutters to herself before snickering again.

"Is there a problem, JG Harton?" Damned girl. Too laid back. Too at ease. Too lazy. Too annoying. Sure, sometimes you envy her calm, take-everything-as-it-comes attitude, but this is not the time or place for it.

"Yes, Chief. Your helmet's all fogged up!" she laughs lazily. "How are you going to see anything?"

Good point. "Good point," you say. "How are you going to see anything?"

Harton's voice takes a decidedly more confused tone. "What?"

Thanks for the idea, Harton. "This helmet is one of the old ones. I'm not sure how they managed it, but the newer ones don't fog up as much. But they still do. You'll each take a turn using this one. Get used to the fog. You don't want to get killed just because your helmet was fogged." You take yours off, grabbing the side of the pool as you do. "Who wants it first?"

That Seaman raises her hand again. "I will, Chief!"

You nod. "Alright, it's yours. Trade you." You toss her your helmet as she does the same. You both catch them without letting them fall into the water. Good. The pool's not super deep along its entire length, but 12 feet is a depth you don't enjoy diving without your gear.

Seaman Wooding fastens the helmet carefully, making sure she can breathe. "Foggy as can be, Chief!" she answers confidently. No one else seems to be as excited for the honor as she. Harton literally begins to sink into the water.

"Alright. Combat training." The pool's not nearly as large or deep as the ocean, but you're stuck with it for at least the next four days. You've got a few ideas for how to do this. Throwing the trainees into a "combat" situation right off the bat should help you figure out where to head with this...

Capture the Flag is probably a good place to start. It has an objective, it has teams, it has combat...should be good for testing them, though to be honest you haven't really tried CTF in Substrikers. You turn to Rae. "Toss me the flags."

"Flags?" comes another familiar voice. Odessa Rothrock. "But we're in the water..."

"We're just calling them that," you assure her. "We won't be using actual flags. The objective will be the same, though. You're all going to be playing Capture the Flag."

The trainees all start chatting at once, jumbled voices over the radio. You catch bits and pieces, but one protest catches your attention. "But this pool is small!"

"Not that small," you answer. The voices die down as you begin to speak. "And besides, you'll be dealing with close combat a lot more than the designers originally anticipated. The Martians have telebots cruising the oceans these days. Knowing how to deal with them as they get up in your face is important."

"Here you go," Rae says, tossing two balls to you. They hit the water with a slap, before not quite sinking but not quite staying afloat.
>>
>>21692710

"Thanks," you say, fastening Wooding's helmet to your suit. "These," you say to the trainees, "are your flags. They don't float, they don't sink, but they do drift. If one of the opposing team members gets your flag to their side of the pool, you lose. Don't let it happen."

"Um..." comes that voice lacking confidence again. "This is...combat training?"

"Yes, Seaman Rothrock," you answer.

"Where....um...how will we be combating each other?"

Getting hurt sucks. Better they learn that now, when they don't get killed, than later. Again, you turn to Rae. You give her a nod, which sets her off to fetch some equipment. A speargun. A small torpedo launcher. Something that looks like a knife.

"These are what you're going to be using," you tell them, presenting the weapons.

They say nothing for several moments. Then Harton's lovely voice breaks the silence. "We're going to diiiiie if we use thooooose, Chief," she sings.

"They're not lethal, JG. You're going to be using these," you say, nodding to Rae again. She produces some projectiles. You hold out a long, narrow rod, letting the trainees examine it before loading your speargun. "The actual spears are quite deadly to flesh and metal alike, but these, as you can see, are not."

The tip, instead of being a sharp metal point designed to dig in and rip things apart, is a large, round rubber spheroid. "It'll hurt like hell getting hit, but that'll just teach you to not get shot. We haven't seen telebots using spears, but don't expect that to hold. The downside to theses training spears is that they travel more slowly. If you just barely dodge one, remember that you'd be dead in a real fight."
>>
>>21692977

Setting the spear aside, you show them the training torpedos. "These are a lot like the real thing, but the tip is softened again. You get hit, again it's going to hurt. Luckily, these are more like the real deal. If you dodge it, you'd probably dodge a real one too."

"What about the knife?" Wooding asks.

"It's a soft blade. No metal. It'll mark your suit, though, so you'll know if you got hit." You pick it up, turning it so that the trainees can see the lack of an edge, point, or anything actually very dangerous. "You'll still seriously hurt someone if you jab hard enough. See to it that you don't."

Well. Now that that's sorted...how do you want to set up the teams?

Mixed. Officer vs. enlisted always turns ugly.

>>
Probably not a good idea to stir up the Officer-Enlisted rivalry right now. You're trying to get these witches to work together. No need to help widen the natural chasm between the two. "Alright. Seaman Rothrock, I want you to get over here. You, JG Harton, Seaman Wooding, and..."

After several minutes, everything's set up and ready to go. Four against four, drop the flag if you get hit. There's no rules for what happens if anyone gets hit without the flag, but the impact of the soft projectiles should do enough to make it worth hitting the enemy and trying your best not to get hit in return.

"Ready?" you ask over the radio. No one objects. "Go."

The pool erupts in motion. A few spears are fired early, failing to reach the other side of the pool with any energy left in them. Torpedos hit the sides, trying to push on through as though there was still open water. The movements are almost entrancing—

"Hey," Rae says, crouching next to you. As you turn to look, she bops you on the head. "Taking the easy way out?"

"What do you mean?" you ask.

"Well, if it were me, I'd be hopping in there myself."

You shrug. "I need to know what they can do before I know what I should do."

Rae laughs. "You plan things more than I do, I guess."

"So..." you say, keeping an eye on the submerged struggle. "Any luck with Ogawa?"

Rae stares off into the distance, thinking what to say. "Well...it's not bad luck or anything, but..."

"What happened?"

"I tried talking with her, just interacting and inviting her to hang out for dinner. She was kind of limp, let's say, but overall I think it went well. She's not as messed up as Boser looks right now, but we'll definitely want to work on her sooner rather than later."

You nod. "Hmm. Then we should—"

"AAAAHHHHHOUCH!" someone yells over the radio.

With incredible speed, you don your helmet and plunge into the water to get a good look. The chaos continues, the flags drifting slowly in the microcurrents. A few spearguns have been tossed away, ammunition expended. A pair of witches are tangled together—

"That's me you idiot!" they yell again. A witch clutches her side, her counterpart holding one of the "knives" they were all given. "I'm on your team!"

"O-oh, I'm sorry..."

Sounds like Wooding just engaged in some friendly fire.

"Hold it, hold it!" you yell over the radio. "Everyone stop a second!"

The chaos slowly ceases as the trainees comply. A few torpedos ram into the walls, their small motors whining.

"What's going on, Chief?" Wooding asks.

"You know what's going on. Who's that? Which poor girl did you stab?" you ask, trying to get a look.

"Harton, Chief..." she answers somewhat raggedly.

"That's your own teammate, Wooding," you say.

"She is, Chief," Wooding confirms.

"So why are you giving her a good jab with your knife?"

"I, uh..." she stammers, caught off guard. "I couldn't tell who she was."

You nod. "So, how's that fogged helmet doing for you?"

"...Not well..."

"Alright, we're switching teams. Wooding, get to the surface. We're moving that fogged helmet around."

You spend several minutes shuffling everyone around and resetting. This time Odessa's got the fogged helmet (something you're a bit uneasy about, but...). Everything's ready to go.

"Now, remember: know who you're attacking. I wouldn't put it past the Martians to pull some trickery that tries to confuse you. The last thing we need is to hurt each other. I don't care how you do it, just make sure you don't hit each other. Harton, if you start feeling pretty bad, go ahead and say something. Everyone ready?"

They all give you various affirmatives.

"Then get started. Go!"

Again chaos breaks out, a flurry of magical shields deflecting training rounds. You keep an eye on Odessa and Harton.

"Getting anything yet?" Rae asks. "Your sage mind gleaning ancient wisdom from the tea leaves?"

"So...when do you think I should talk to Ogawa?"

Rae shrugs. "We're on a tight schedule and I don't know if she'll really get any better on her own. Not fast enough for us, anyway. I'd say as soon as dinner, as late as tomorrow's dinner. Not any later."

"Oh." You don't much like what you have to do here. You've already done some bad stuff to people. You knew you'd have to talk soon, but... "Think I should go alone?"

Rae shakes her head immediately. "No. Don't do that. She'll chalk up whatever you say to some artificial attempt to save the day. It'll ring hollow in her ears. You need to talk to her, but she can't think that you're pushing it or...or starting it or leading it or something. I dunno. The point is, if I'm there, maybe she'll see the actual merit in...laying the foundation for Sisterhood."

That's a relief. Having someone with you would help a lot. In fact—

You hear a sniffle as everyone else clears coms.

With several kicks, you bring her up to the surface, dragging her limp body out of the pool.

Odessa grabs at your suit, clutching it. "I couldn't see! I didn't know who to hit..."

"It's ok, it's alright. Just calm down," you reassure her. Slowly, she releases her hold, letting you move freely once more.

"Alright. Here's a question," you address the trainees. "Were you all wearing fogged helmets?"

"Did you all decide Seaman Rothrock didn't need help?"

And of course, when someone gets hurt and we rush them off to the infirmary, which one is it? Odessa.

Janice Green's face brightens. "Of course! My, the pool can be a very dangerous place, young lady! Here, let's get you out of that suit and..." she says enthusiastically, grabbing Odessa's shoulders from behind and guiding (pushing, more like) her behind a curtained bed.

You can hear the rustling of clothing and the reactions to cold medical equipment as Janice Green does her work. All the while, she talks about the dangers of swimming and the wonders of modern medicine, several breaths taken so that she can reassure Odessa about her health and the miniscule likelihood of various obscure diseases and injuries but that she should still be careful and that pools are still something to watch out for even if your job is going to be swimming and—

Ask Odessa if she would be alright doing nighttime lessons from now on.
>>
>>21695877
NO! The rumors!

They'll think lewd things...
>>
>>21695895
Fuck the rumors
>>
>>21695918

But the rumors WILL be fucking!

But nah, I think she's got something of a handle on it.
>>
>>21695895
She won't be doing them alone. There's not much point in having just one night-op witch; we should see about getting at least two others.
Hell, we should have done that as soon as we figured out the familiar thing.
>>
>>21695931

Now that's actually a pretty good idea.
>>
>>21695931

Actually... are there rumors about nightwitches?

Y'know, always up late, together, when everyone else is asleep?

Flying overhead... watching...
>>
>>21695939
There's no promises of the other having night worthy familiars/aptitudes.
>>
"...so you shouldn't spend too much time in there! It's bad for your skin. Here, let me get that for you. Anyway, you should also be careful. Your arms don't look very muscular which can be a good thing for the attractiveness but don't forget that muscles help your body do things it needs to do! I hope you witches have been eating right as well, there's just not enough good food getting around these days and—Oh! Let me get that for you. My, you have the cutest—!"

"Pl-please let me do that myself!"

"Oh, alright—"

The...infirmary lady seems to be having quite the time with Odessa. "You about finished, uh...doc?"

"Oh!" she exclaims, sticking her head out from the curtains. "I'm not a doctor!"

"Nurse?"

"Nope!"

"Medic?"

"Uh-uh!"

"...Then what are you?"

"I run the infirmary!"

I think she's well enough now. Time to have that moment.

Oh god, she's in it for the naked witches.

Other than her cutest... whatever they were?

goddamnit, if it's not sad witches it's lesbians. Let's go before Odessa gets too molested.

Your eyes go wide. This is not a good thing. You need to talk to Alice about her staff. Right now, though...

"Thank you, um, Janice. Is she fine?"

"Yes! A little shaken, but otherwise fine!" she says gleefully.

"Well then, we better be on our way. Odessa?"

"Yes?" she answers, dressed and pushing the curtains apart.

"Let's go." You take her by the hand and almost drag her out of the infirmary.

"Come back soon! I mean, not that I want you to get hurt or..." Janice Green begins, her voice fading as you put as much distance between you and that infirmary as you can.

Satisfied once you turn the corner, you grab Odessa by the shoulders, giving her a look over. Her dry suit seems to be intact, along with her Substriker. She doesn't look hurt anywhere, either. Well. That's some good news. "How do you feel, Odessa? She do anything stupid?"

"I'm fine! I'm fine. It's ok," she stammers.

You give her a look over. Pretty dry by now. Checking your watch, you see it's late enough to be an early lunch. It might help to sit around a table and munch on some food... "Odessa, think you can handle some food?"

"Eh? Um, I should able to..."

"Then let's go."

The pair of you head into the cafeteria, grabbing some brunch (a scared Tom isn't entirely convinced by your words when you reassure him Rae's busy). You choose a table by the door, setting your tray down easy. As you munch on some sort of biscuit, sausage, egg, cheese combination sandwich (which you will most certainly be getting again), you decide it's time to ask.

"So," you say between bites, "you'd been getting better, right? No freak incidents lately?"

"W-well, I guess not..."

"But then this happened." You perk your eyebrows as the sandwich somehow becomes even tastier.

"N-no! This...this wasn't like the other things..." she says softly, poking at an egg.

"Then what was it? What happened in the pool, Odessa?"

"...I couldn't see. I didn't know what to do. I...panicked."

Oh. "The fogged helmet...really got to you, huh?" you ask. You really did feel uncomfortable wearing that, not sure if you were going to bump in to something.

"Not just that. I've...I've never personally been in combat like that. I don't want to hurt people..."

[ ] Well, good thing we'll be fighting telebots and ships.

That, and giant squids.
Giant squids hate Martian tele-bots something fierce, and the feeling seems to be mutual.

"Well, it's a good thing we won't be fighting people," you say as you take a bite.

"But what about—"

"Not even Martians. Not themselves. If we end up fighting like we're practicing, we'll be fighting against telebots. Maybe squids. Not people. Not Martians." You pause to think. "Not that Martians aren't people, of course."

Odessa nods. "I guess..."

"Still, you've gotta practice. It's not like we've got telebots around here you can fight with. War's not easy, Odessa. We all have to make sacrifices."

"...I'll try my best. Sorry about making a fuss..."

"Don't worry about—"

Natsumi Ogawa bursts into the room, a great purpose in her stride. Her face is as frozen and held as ever, but in an almost angry (but not quite) expression. She scans the cafeteria quickly, spotting you and Odessa close by.

"Lieu-Lieutena—" you attempt to greet her, but she quickly grabs you and begins dragging you out of the room. "What the hell!?" you demand, helpless before her determined grip. She takes you around the hall, opening a small door to a room you've never entered. It seems to be a large closet of some sort.

She nearly throws you against the wall, making sure she can guard the door.

"What do you think you're doing!?" you ask, stunned.

"…"

"Ogawa!"

"...Let's talk," she says weakly.
