No doubt that this is an hopeless situation, while protected from corruption thank to the young queen magic fact remains that your little group is both dispersed all around the black tar covering the soil and completely isolated, closed off from any venue of escape by an almost literal sea of blood red skeletons hell-bent on charging into your position even if doing so is futile, they only have the time for two steps before being swallowed whole by the living tar yet such failures never bring an end to the staunch undead, hundreds falling by the seconds in an almost mechanical way, painting a psychedelic scene that is hard to ignore, even with Hadraniel having half her body swallowed by the lake, surrounded by several black silhouettes.

Yes, several, in the spans of a few seconds as you stared unto that damnable creature it literally shed itself several new identical forms, 4 more to be exact which increased the numbers of foe to 5 and each dug in near the angel as she struggled to free herself from the tar, but the thing wouldn’t let go and even if she had the strength of an ogre you’ve no doubt this lake would continue to swallow her, you don’t have much time to get her out of there.

A powerful feeling of vertigo force you to your knees, it is soon followed by intense nausea that force you to vomit, but now isn’t the time to lay in self-pity and, with one last look to your platform of blue foxfire, you stand up embracing focus, glaring at the lone creature before averting your gaze, Sylphis is holding her forehead, groaning but standing, probably stricken with the same nausea you’ve just had and Garret is helping Mylen on her feet, the girl most likely crash-landed painfully but the multi tailed queen seem to have had enough foresight to extend your bodyguard her own flaming platform, sparing her from this corruption.

And there it is, right in front of you, unmoving, unflinching, a human body without a face, standing at the side of the hero, slowly swallowing her whole, the angel struggling to keep herself from falling further, already past her navel…

Behind you, Ame-no-Uzume is channeling, the lingering magic of the Inari is enough to flare up all your sense, being so close to something so powerful somehow amplify your own talents but that may simply be an natural effect, this is the kind of magic that can be felt from other provinces and you are standing close enough to touch the nexus.

Around the 9 tailed girl, several blue orb as big as your fist orbit around her, her tails moving up and down as if underwater, the flame of her eyes actually go past her eyes sockets and sometime, at uneven interval, you see a mirror of her body flicker in and out of existence as if you were seeing double and as she sing and channel, the blue fire come out at certain syllables.

Your story is bad and you should feel bad for writing it.

Never before have you seen such a demonic creature.

Amidst her song, the queen never spoke, you see an ethereal creature spawned from one of her orb, and the sphere flew above you, expanded large and from it, a spirit emerged, young looking female burning bright yet looking oddly excited, mischievous, upon closer inspection your realize that the flames surrounding her is actually a set of 6 vulpine tails and her skin is actually an alluring blue, as is her hairs and furry ears and, with one long at the battlefield, the spirit known as a Kitsune-bi started hovering, dancing, floating in the air, covering the entire circle of tar in small ember of blue fire shining like firefly.

Whatever Ame is up too is serious, that much is clear, but enough lingering, to make certain you aren’t victim of another invasion or trick of the mind, there is a single option: you must pair up with someone, but whom? In your position, it’s clear that the unmoving nightmare is simply looking for a single opportunity to strike but if you were to launch an offensive you’d inevitably fall into its illusions…

And losing time only give it victory, Hadraniel will be inevitably lost – soon.

That girl has always been a quiet one, even now after shaking off your foe mind trick the golem was never far from you, slightly behind and apart just enough to charge in without pushing you. She’s the only one that seemed share Ame-no-Uzume apparent immunity to this mind meld, thus, you resolve to have her as your wingmen, everyone else is rather far and dispersed, its only logical to take the golem with you.

You don’t even need to speak, only forward the mute girl move at your side and, as you glare and hope that horror could kneel over and die, your entire body is cocooned by a large plate armor of ice, creating it has become much more easy as time went on and, even if its heavy and rather cumbersome you are confident you can take some serious hit if need be, surviving is a priority after all and close quarter combat has never been your forte.

Somehow, the pommel of your sword is warm even through your cold gauntlet, you take low guard stance and, with a devious smile concealed inside your helmet, your pull out your newly upgraded weapon, and none could have anticipated such a deluge of holy light for you never spoke of it after all.

The blade glowers like a star.

You never expected something of this magnitude, you pulled it out in one go and, as the nexus of the artifact, you were forced to close your eyes despite the sheer stupidity of doing do – so intense was holiness, flaring your senses, you squint to try and identify something and, amidst the light, you spot a sitting girl with two set of wings, disappear much too fast for your liking as, finally, the light dies, your weapon returning to a more normal shining white akin to a torch.

Around you, the barrier of undead has disappeared, just like that, the bones lay scattered; lifeless whatever strings animated them cut, although some in the horizon were starting to raise anew they were, in all honesty of no consequences, merely remnant of a scattered mob.

You’ll never doubt the power of magical weapons any longer.

‘’You could have said you had something like that in stock, you know?’’

Ame is no longer on her knee, the queen has stood and, floating around her is a second Kitsune-bi, the vulpine spirit is merry and laughing but, unlike the first one still dancing in the sky, the creature is vacuumed right into the fan of the queen.

Behind her however, the lake of corruption bubble and you see an emerging humanoid holding a spear, ready to skewer her at a moment notice, and clamor of battle from your companions all but affirm that your surprise didn’t seem to faze your enemy.

Stay alert; that thing will go after Ame again. She's the only party member who is even close to a match for that shadow.

Without blinking, you channel a fast spell and not only skewer the creature right in the head, but pits its arms with two other icicle for good measure, whatever momentum the forward thrust had obliterated, the corpse fall lifeless back into the sea and the Kitsune hasn’t even acknowledged your action, merely focused on the foe near the angel but, you see, a circle of runes come alight around her back, acting like some of kind of shield.

"Believe me, my dear…’’

You don’t have time to continue, Emeth suddenly charge in and with a soft ‘’Ah!’’ plunge her hand right into the corrupted lake and pull out some kind of serpent and unceremoniously decapitate it by tearing its head off.

You notice, now, that everyone else in the party is defending and fighting against multi directional attack, rotting corpse similar to the one that tried to sneak a hit on Ame emerge constantly with javelins, only present for a single throw before disappearing back into the lake, serpent the size of your torso charging only to get cut or skewered in midair and… insects try to emerge from the corruption, flying creature the size of bee but each one barely has enough time to live for a few seconds before being burned alive by the embers of the Kitsune-bi, everyone is still on the defensive however but it doesn’t seem like they’ll be overwhelmed, in a way, all of it seem like a stalling action, one that you are free of, probably due to Ame.

‘’Why are you still here!? Go, now!’’

Hadraniel has been swallowed even more, half her torso is now gone as she struggle to keep herself from a dire fate, the creature is still there, unmoving, in front of her like a statue.

Ame probably won’t have time to finish her spell before the angel disappear but how should you proceed, right now, defense proved to work…

Shifting your stance to a high one, you give a look to the expressionless golem already at your side, the none to your companions who, as a group are making their way to the creature, the onslaught of corrupted creature never cease, unlike you, they barely have time to plan ahead however, you do notice that Sylphis is holding the small effigy that was given to Garret.

‘’Now, my angel, I’m coming for you!’’

Whatever this hero think, she has many a comrade ready to risk their lives for her and your exclamation, although cliché and stupid send a very clear warm feeling from the girl in distress even if she doesn’t accept it.

Thus, you charge, holy weapon held high, your advance undaunted by the charging serpents, all of them are skewered by your magic, precision and quickness of cast has been two of your forte and right now it shows.

That was Mylen voice, you can only spare a glance but it seem that the girl has also broken from the group for a charge, having discarded her shield in favor of her sword whatever charging wretches coming her way is sliced with precision and momentum, however her angle is off, she’s going in a diagonal, and likely to end up charging you instead, but even so this nightmare has to deal with 2 immediate front… and yours is discarded, almost, and the lizard woman is assaulted by a staggering amount of creatures, tiny sliver of serpent launching and biting into her clothes and scales while the larger ones are sliced by swipes, that’s when you see one of the Kitsune-bi spirits fly overhead crashing into the nightmare and as the flame is swallowed you hear a grunt and its image flickers, as if out of bounds, out of reality, but you press on regardless close enough for a strike of your holy sword, Ame and Athena bought you an opening, the golem is clever for she part from your side and immediately grab Hadraniel arm to pull the angel out.

However you can’t pull out your sword, the strike, the holy energy is swallowed into the damp meat of its body and its rotten bones and flesh regenerate around the wound.

Even so the nightmare isn’t moving; nay you hear its voice, a low growling, or maybe a beastly chuckle?

‘’Your fear is those around you, you damn them by your existence’’

It wasn’t directed at you, Emeth has her hands full pulling out the flying knight and she’s putting her entire strength to combat the glued fluids.

That’s when the nightmare strike, right at you, its arm break, open and spew black spit as row upon row of teeth form a crude mouth, some kind of unholy mix of pincer and fang of beast, of course, its aiming right at your neck.

‘’Think fast!’’

You don’t remember being so cocky but this creature is, quite simply, pissing you off to the point that you can only feel pure hatred, at such a close distance you don’t have much option in term of evasion, after all you are garbed in a big, bulky plate armor and despite your training you aren’t exactly completely comfortable is such a thing, the other option is magic and you know just the thing.

Letting go of your sword, the holy energy fade the moment your palm quit the metal your eyes on the pincers you grin as you channel your energy faster than it can swing to decapitate you.

Your mouth is the point of origin for this spell; you are certainly not bound to ice as a fluid mage, just like your mother was not bound by fire, for she controlled warmth.

It’s difficult however, you aren’t used to it, so you brute force your way into it, after all you’ll lose your head in a manner of seconds!

A large, powerful cloud of steam emerge from your mouth, strong enough push back its arm, hot enough to cook its meat alive, sending a very unpleasant odor right up your nostril, you interrupt your spell when you step back and to conserve as much energy as you can, forcing your nerves to burns is not something you want right now but you’ve succeeded in not only stopping the attack but dismember the damn thing, for what it’s worth anyway, it’ll regrow for certain.

You didn’t expect Athena to come in, as you were prepared a second salve the knight swing her sword and imbed it right into the creature shoulder, forcing it to stumble from the momentum of the charge and she certainly doesn’t relent for, knowing the fate of her weapon thank to you, she let go of the pommel and charge the dripping black silhouette, shoving it to the ground and pinning it.

Emeth is struggling to get the angel, you see several vine wrapping them around her, keeping the angel locked and her wings imprisoned, amidst all of it she doesn’t seem to be able to move herself, perhaps lacking strength to do so and the golem is barely able to hold on the increased force, could it be that this creature was merely playing all along?.

Behind you, Ame has almost finished, a consort of Kitsune-bi is dancing around her, spreading small blue ember everywhere on the battlefield as she hold her fan upward, the serpentine dragons appearing out of the object at uneven interval, akin to an aura.

Sylphis is holding the effigy upward as well, perhaps directed by Garret, the sky is slowly starting to clear, the tables are turning perhaps?

But right now you must choose – Emeth cannot pull Hadraniel out of the lake on her own and, likewise, it’s doubtful that the one armed knight can hold such a creature alone, already its dribbling form is staining her.

Your link with the knight is muddled, in this confrontation it would seem that she had been an aim just as much as the angel was, calling out to her will be useless, that’s the impression, nay the truth, that your precious link give you, out of everyone present Athena has been the one with the least contact with corruption after all…

It’s a small, small voice as the dragon rage down, the nightmare shifted its form to some kind of blob like creature, Athena seem to have entangle herself in it like an ant would do with a slime unable to move and free herself, the two swords falling into the circle of flame, you notice that the beast is… suckling on her missing are, row of teeth piercing her skin without crushing and the girl seem out of it, for lack of a better term, somehow trapped between dream and reality, such sigh ignite your rage and, even amidst the presence of a dragon, you pelt the enemy with magic, right before mythical beast come crashing down.

There is no show of firework or collateral damage, instead, the entirety of the sky bound beast is suckled right into the Nightmare and, as you are still disoriented and recovering from the incredible pressure, the Hero spring forward and throw his mace on your foe, the magical weapon connect with a wet crunch and a chain reaction ensue, not before grabbing this wretched being burning from the inside and throwing it with a single arm.

It explode in midair, and perhaps you are dreaming but… you see the phantom of the dragon lying lifeless on the ground before being consumed in flame, far behind, Ame is unable to stand but frustrated enough to punch the soil with her hands – the lake of corruption has disappear, completely burned off.

The true form of your foe finally manifest and it is a shade one that you remember seeing yesterday, cloaked humanoid held aloft by fumes without any hint of lower body, tall and inhuman with enough presence to cause nausea and fear, but as everyone is still recovering, one armored individual charge undaunted and unarmed

However another burst of magic, this time coming from the separated group, ray of sunlight piece the clouds and you see a short mantis holding the effigy to the sky, the light of the sun concentrate on the object and, from this point of origin, the arm of the little rogue is condensed in orange and yellow, words of both color slithering around her arm to form a tip – a blade, near her you See Mylen completely out of breath and the alchemist standing without a sweat but, even so, the small girl charge and the Hero grab the enemy, holding it in place.

There you inner beast awake, rage with enough fury for you to kneel over – amidst the roar and insults you make out the clear sentence of ‘’wasted meat’’, even with Emeth concern and help, you feel like dying, never before did such a crisis happen, never before had it been so angry, never before had it been so sentient.

The fight between the specter and the hero is a blur, the creature appendage is unable to piece its armored and the armored paladin is merely holding on for the Sylphis to close the distance and strike – it doesn’t take long for her to do so, weaponize sunlight forming a clumsy blade, Batrion holding the creature, Sylphis doesn’t need to worry about an unseen strike and so, she shove the magical weapon right into the core of the specter and form there, a growling, deep and powerful before its form shift, disappearing into flies, all directed right at the angel and, despite your combined effort with the golem to impede they’re progress, your shrapnel’s meet nothing, Emeth trying to eat that corruption amount to striking the air, the insects become dots that find refuge in the body of the angel barely able to hold on to her consciousness.

A nightmare is, after all, a part of a hero.
