(Previous threads: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Ogre%20Civilization%20Quest)

"Most everything about demons remains a mystery; even today, no one really knows how they came to be, when they came into existence, or why they decided to attach their 'pocket dimension' to our own, much like a parasite attaching itself to its host."

"The earliest records we have of them originate from a few millennia ago, when the elves first began dabbling in magic on a large scale. Drawn to our plane of existence by a certain frequency or harmonic only replicable by magical means, a squadron of armored demons tore through the fabric of reality and began slaughtering elves- or so the stories goes, as some accuse those early elves of intentionally summoning the demons (or, at least, poking a hole in reality out of sheer bloody-minded curiosity)."

"Still, no one can deny that elves have been warring on and off with the demons ever since then, leading to an escalating arms race between the two races. Demons are attracted by (and occasionally consume) magic, so elves began investing in conventional firearms; elves specialize in ranged weapons, so demons began evolving abilities specifically tailored around devastating groups of marksmen."

"Even less is known about the demons' home dimension; many foolhardy adventurers have found ways into the demons' dimension, but to date, only one group has come back alive, and they were all driven irrevocably mad by what they saw."

"... the only exception was the ogre servant/pack mule that they brought with them, who described it as 'kind of a fizzy place, with lotsa eyeballs and fings.' Investigations are still ongoing..."

It took more than a bit of elbow grease and smooth talking, but Boss Bawss Fistboss managed to get his two allies- Celicia, the commander of the Felpowder Elves, and Queen Kilkkarak, the leader of all of the beetle-like Scaratones- to stop fighting. Once that was done, though, Boss Bawss ceded the floor to Celicia, letting her describe the various attacks on her people by an insectoid people (who shared a few similarities to the Scaratones). Celicia finishes her tale with the battle that the ogres had participated in, and a full description of the strange, crimson, six-limbed (four legs and two arms) insectoids, along with the armored golden being that assumed direct control of one of its minions... and, just as importantly, the one Scaratone that HAD accompanied that enemy raiding party.

Once Celicia finished talking, though, Boss Bawss can't help but feel worried. Normally, the large beetle-like queen would be injecting her own brand of cheerful, occasionally sarcastic levity into the conversation, but...

"... hmm." That's the extent of Queen Kilkkarak's comments, and she allowed Celicia to explain her side of the story more or less unmolested; the Scaratone Queen merely has her arms crossed, tapping a claw on her cheek distractedly.

It's hard to read the expression on the beetle-person's face, but Boss Bawss has the distinct feeling that Queen Kilkkarak is actually /pensive/.

Once the elf soldier finishes speaking, she watches Queen Kilkkarak warily, only shooting Boss Bawss Fistboss a worried glance when the silence stretches on for nearly a minute. Should he step in...?

>[X] [CLARIFY] Ask Celicia to elaborate on that first battle!
>... and also about that gold bug. Did she see him before?

Boss Bawss clears his throat, more to fill in the increasingly awkward silence than because of anything stuck in his throat. "So! Celicia. Da first time you fought those buggy-things, wot happened?"

The female elf blinks at him, momentarily taken off-guard by the question- clearly, she expected him to ask the Scaratone Queen- but she rallies gamely. "- oh, well... we bumped into them the first time they tried to undermine Daphnaia's roots-"

"Yah," Boss Bawss nods. "Before we treelocated it to Ogir Place."

The moment of silence is broken by Queen Kilkkarak's quiet, muffled snort of amusement. Celicia, for her part, simply gives Boss Bawss a flat stare.

"... we've been over this. We are not calling it the 'treelocation.'"

Boss Bawss shrugs. "Why not? It's catchy an' easy to remember, so-"

Celicia throws up her hands in exasperation. "Alright, alright, fine, it WAS before the 'treelocation.' Anyway, that was the first time we saw those big red bugs, and they fucking asked us to just hand over Daphnaia, or they'd take it by force."

Boss Bawss blinks, filing that under 'weirdo things to remember for later.' "How 'bout dat gold bug?"

"... look," Celicia grumbles, all but forgetting the usual proper elven decorum in front of monarchs. "If I'd ever seen a bloody armor-wearing, lightning-spewing gold bug before today, I damn well would have mentioned it earlier."

(Cont.)

"... the Formichroma."

Both elf and ogre look up at the Scaratone Queen's pronouncement. She looks back at them, her alien face hard to read. "That's the name of the insectoids that attacked you. Old grudge-enemies of ours, yes. We drove them from our lands centuries ago, leaving them a scattered and broken people."

"... guess dey recovered," Boss Bawss hazards.

Queen Kilkkarak sighs, rubbing her hands together with the sound of metal scraping against metal. "Bad news for us, yes-yes. And they identified you as our allies... honestly, nothing like a grudge-enemy to ruin a good day, or a good hive."

Queen Kilkkarak looks to Celicia and the felpowder rifle slung over the elf's shoulder. "If they're strong enough to harass you with your death from above," she notes, "then we can expect an attack on our hive in a matter of days, most likely."

"What about the Scaratone that was with them?" Celicia asks, her expression neutral.

The Scaratone Queen waves a hand dismissively. "Traitors from the deposed royal family, either desperate to regain the throne or enslaved by the Formichroma. Queens come and go," she adds, in response to Boss Bawss's surprised expression. "But I am still a young Queen, yes, and I do not intend to go down as the one who lost the Scaratone's empire."

There's an uneasy silence as all three leaders digest this unwelcome information.

(Cont.)
>>
>>21586859
And then Queen Kilkkarak breaks it, shooting Celicia a /look/. "... still, I must say. Do all of us six-legged insectoid peoples look the same to you? Is that what it is?"

"Wha-!? I-It was a perfectly reasonable assumption to make!" Celicia sputters. "Fuck, we thought the red bugs were some- some subspecies or-"

"They don't have /shells/," Queen Kilkkarak points out dryly. "We do. If circumstances were not what they were, I would be completely offended. See, how rude these elven folk are!" she adds, sounding not at all offended and simply amused at the elf's growing discomfort.

Boss Bawss runs a hand over his face. "... think we got other things to worry 'bout, Queenie," he groans. "Please stop tryin' to make da elf squeak again."

"She squeaks? Oh, this I must see for myself, yes-yes," Queen Kilkkarak chortles, her eyes sparkling with amusement, at the precise same moment that Celicia whirls on Boss Bawss and growls "Dammit, I do NOT!"

Boss Bawss holds his hands up in a placating manner- which just makes Queen Kilkkarak laugh all the more merrily at the sight of the large ogre trying to soothe a scrawny elf barely half his size.

"'Kay, us ogres'll help da Scaratone Empire in da upcomin' fight."

Both Queen Kilkkarak and Celicia fall silent, staring at the ogre in surprise. It's the Queen of the Scaratones who speaks up first, chittering in consternation. "... brute-warrior-friend, I had not even asked yet."

"But dat's da answer you woulda gotten if you had. Even tho' we got off on da wrong foot to start off with, you was a big help to all o' my boys," Boss Bawss rumbles, crossing his arms over his barrel-like chest. "Besides, da Formichroma, dey killed some of my boys, an' dey'll be attackin' us no matter wot. It'll be to our moo... myootchooal ben..."

He frowns and scratches his nose with a large, grubby finger. "... it'd be a good thing for all of us. We'll punch 'em out together, an' I'll even sign a big fancy agreement dat says so."

It takes a moment for her to digest all that, but Queen Kilkkarak chitters warmly, mandibles clacking together. "Hah! Well-spoken! Truly the epitome of the brute-warrior ogres. Cannot protest any of that, yes-yes. Scribe!" she calls out, snapping her fingers together; a small, pale worker Scaratone immediately scurries over, parchment and quill in hand. "Please do take it down. The agreement between our peoples, the Scaratones and the Ogres- a defensive pact!"

As Queen Kilkkarak oversees the transcription, Boss Bawss turns to Celicia, who has a face like she bit into a fruit that turned out to be sour. "... you okay with dat?" he asks carefully.

Celicia scowls, looking like she's about to bite the unlit cigarette in her mouth clean in half- before she relents with a sigh. "... fuck. Not like we got a choice- you have a point, those Formichroma assholes are going to be gunning for all of us at some point. And we DID say that we'd put our trust in you, Boss Bawss," she adds dryly. "Still..."

The soldier shoves her hands into her pockets. "It's just going to be strange, you know? Fighting alongside people you thought were your enemies. It's a hard thing to swallow." Celicia suddenly scowls, though it's not directed at Boss Bawss. "... hell, I can already hear the hotheads in the squadron crying about it in that passive-aggressive way of theirs," she grumbles.

Boss Bawss blinks. "So... dat's a yes, then?"

"... yeah, I guess?"

Boss Bawss grins, whoops, and then picks up the smaller elf and plops her down on his shoulder, before spinning toward Queen Kilkkarak and pointing at Celicia. "Hey! Hey, Queenie! Da elves agreed to help us fight 'em off, too!"

"GODFUCKING DAMMIT-" Celicia squeaks, before clearing her throat. "- what in the world are you DOING, you bloody oaf!?" she continues, her voice back down to its usual growl.

There's a glorious, glorious moment as the Queen of all Scaratones and the Boss of all Ogres point finger guns at each other and wink, a universal gesture of 'aw fuck yes.' It ends when Celicia starts throttling Boss Bawss's tree-trunk of a neck.

Queen Kilkkarak clears her throat, sitting a good distance away from Celicia, who is still fuming. 'Sitting' isn't quite accurate, for a large bestial beetle-queen with an enlarged abdomen- she simply has her four legs folded underneath her.

"Yes-yes, well... the long and short of it is, us Scaratones have lived in the desert, the Scouring Wastes, for as long as we can remember," Queen Kilkkarak chitters. "But most of our settlement is both aboveground and underground. Formichroma... they had a similar arrangement, yes, but near oases and the like. For generations, we had a tenuous peace, and mere generations ago, it was broken."

The Scaratone Queen snorts. "Like us, Formichroma have queens. And both our queens pop out larvae like a sandstorm vomits sand. With only so much desert to go around, of course we would have territorial skirmishes with the Formichroma." She shakes her head, antennae waving to and fro with the motion. "... and... things escalated, on both sides," she chitters vaguely. "Is reason why we have ironclad law against harming workers, especially during warfare, yes-yes. Only they can create thing that is most of our food stores, jelly."

"From poop, right?" Boss Bawss prompts.

"... you ogres seem quite fixated on that idea. But yes. Yes, it is." Queen Kilkkarak idly traces her finger through the sand on the tunnel's floor. "Formichroma are bigger than the warriors of my race. Very regimented fighters, very well synchronized, always connected to each other through the mind and the scent. Set in their ways, though. Not so fast to adapt. Not so good with the unpredictable. Will be a given that they attack from underground, tunnel into the hive and mount an assault from some unguarded sector."

"Ugh- underground fighting. Good thing we have some practice, but still... I don't know how good our rifles are going to be underground, with fighters swarming around everything," Celicia growls, biting her unlit cigarette. "Still, you can't call that gold bug anything but unpredictable. That thing fought like a beast."

Queen Kilkkarak shakes her head. "... worrisome. No records that I know of mentions anything about a Formichroma like that. Some new leader? Come to think of it... not really sure what the Formichroma have been doing all these generations," she adds uneasily, the thought striking her suddenly. "Will have to do some research."

"Either way, we'll krump 'em," Boss Bawss adds cautiously. Sure, he has a pretty good head for fightin'- Gubbins would say that Bawss can feel the ebb and flow of battle in his gizzard, or some such- but he's never been one for straight-up strategy or moving huge numbers of ogres around that much...

"... well, we can decide the specifics of that a little closer to the day of, yes-yes," Queen Kilkkarak chitters. "For now, all I ask is that we each prepare our troops as best we can."

Queen Kilkkarak tilts her head at Boss Bawss, more seriously than usual; clearly, she has a lot on her mind at the moment. "... anything else, while we are here?"

Trade and Tour would be best. We do have some nice things and Geomancy means we can help them a bit with their tunnels if need be. I'm sure a water pebble or two would be worth a bunch as well.

Speaking of geomancy, it is going to be VERY handy in underground warfare along with Ur-Camo. If their main method of fighting is coming through the tunnels, sealing them or slowing down the stream of people will make Krumping easy.
>>
Trade then Tour- maybe one of the aquafier pebbles, and perhaps we can convince the elves to share the secrets of boom-boom sticks with the scaratones.

Also, I'm still waiting for a two headed ogre magi to show up!

Oh hey, we brought in our Beastmaster to help take care of their molerat problem, right?

[WRITE-IN] Have our Beastmaster tame the Molerats to prepare for underground warfare.
>>
I can't really think of what we have to trade. We probably shouldn't try and summon up a new demon lord for the Scaratones to get indoor heating. I don't suppose elf poop is a hot commodity? There's nothing else quite like it, elves being newcomers to these shores.

... Do elves poop?
>>
>>21588632
>... Do elves poop?

Ah, I see we've finally stumbled upon the important questions.

>[WRITE-IN] Have our Beastmaster tame the Molerats to prepare for underground warfare.

Bu we should send this guy to tame more Moles while we take the tour.
>>
>>21588617
Why stop at molerats? Have Beastkrumpa delve deep into the earth.

He'll pull up a Deep Crow or an Old One or something.
>>
So if we managed to turn a sandstorm into a drill with just Gubbins back before he became a master geomancer, now that we have an entire race of geomancers, how profitable would carrying out Gubbins' earlier crazed suggestion of tunneling to the center of the planet be?

Alright, looks like we have a consensus on trade! So, before I go into the next post, let's open up the trading window...

>>
Rolled 8, 2, 8, 4, 1, 8, 2, 2, 3, 8, 4, 10 = 60

>>21588694
We could probably help the Scaratones a lot with creating defenses using our Geomancy, come to think of it.

We ARE gonna get a time to prepare for battle, right?
>>
>>21588724
Yes, you'll get a fancy pre-battle multiple choice screen and everything. And also a turn or two to turn our civ-managing direction to prep for warfare.
>>
Rolled 2, 2, 4, 4, 1, 3, 10, 8, 3, 3, 9, 6 = 55

>>21588722
If we trade something like ARMS or FOOD, do we lose it forever or what?
>>
>>21588741
Nah, the ogres will still have access to those resources (though possibly at a lesser amount), it'll just be an ongoing trade agreement that will affect the Scaratones to an extent, too.
>>
Rolled 92

>>21588722
SCIMITARS. i dont care about anything else. Give them whatever they want.
>>
>>21588722
[CHOOSE 3: WOT WE GOT (that they would want)]
>[x] Aquifer Pebbles
>[x] [FOOD] Wheat, Potatoes
>[x] [ARMS] Crude Iron Armor
Considering they're underground most of the time, they should get stuff that will support them better. It's not like they need the featherstone tricks.

[CHOOSE 3: WOT THEY GOT]
[x] [ARMS] Scimitars
[x] [MAGIC] Item Casting (i.e. casting directly from magic stored in items, i.e. Wand of Fireball etc)
[x] [MAGIC] Item Crafting (i.e. creating items for the above purpose)
If war's on the horizon, we need to upgrade our crack-tus sticks. Plus, with extra gear, we can outfit ourselves better (and give Gubbins stuff to do).
>>
>>21588722
Aquifer pebbles
Crude Iron armor
Dragon Lore

For

Healing
Manurecrafting
Item Casting
>>
>>21588722
We can't get Royal Jelly anymore for the manufacture of Berserker Ogres?
>>
>>21588722
I don't like the thought of exposing creatures without crazy luck to demonic artifacts, soooo...'
>[ ] Aquifer Pebbles
or, id they have enough water:
>[ ] [BOOK] Tomes (Dragon Lore)
>[ ] [MAGIC] Tomes (Illusory Magic I)
>[ ] [MAGIC] Tomes (Necromancy I)

For:
>[ ] [ARMS] Scimitars (it would be good to gets some proper weapons to go with proper armor)
>[ ] [TECH] Manurecrafting (So Gubbins can pen his technique for future generations.)

And I can't think of anything else we need.
>>
Rolled 8, 3, 2, 2, 5, 9, 4, 4, 6, 2, 3, 10 = 58

>>21588722
>>21588756

Alright then.

What we trade:
>[x] Aquifer Pebbles - Maybe water is useful to them? We've got a lot of this stuff, so we can spare it, but I'm not sure about they would want to do with it.
>[x] Demon Helms/Shoulderpads - Get them well equipped for the battle!
>[x] Wheat, Potatoes - CULINARY DELIGHTS.

What we want:
[x] Scimitars - We really need something better than the Cracktus sticks...
[x] Healing - Yeah, definitely need this.
[x] Jewelcrafting - Gotta upgrade our hats!

>[X] [ARMS] Demon Helm/Shoulderpads
Because hey, the bugs would want to see that.

>[X] [TECH] Bullshit Featherstone Tricks (flight, airdrops, airships)
If the Bugs now know it, thats one major advantage over our enemies

>[X] Aquifer Pebbles
This is an amazing weapon to trade with them. Enemies attacking your tunnels? FLOOD THOSE FUCKERS

>WOT WE WANT

>[X] [MAGIC] Item Casting (i.e. casting directly from magic stored in items, i.e. Wand of Fireball etc)

This could be fun.

Also, we should tell the Bugs and the Elves about A) Us being Bros with a god of Earthquakes B) having a super demon locked up in our base and C) Our 'SUPERMEGADRILLTHATPIERCESTHEHEAVENS' That we can use to fuck shit up.

>[TECH] Bullshit Featherstone Tricks (flight, airdrops, airships)

Take
[ARMS] Scimitars
[TECH] Jewelcrafting
[MAGIC] Climate Control(?)
>>
>>21588722
I say we get climate control to fix daffy some more, healing to stop the boys getting krumped and scimitars so we got something other than sticks to hit dem other bugs we are allowed to squish with
>>
>>21588974
Since when do the boys need protracted healing that can't already be solved with their own regeneration? I'm of the mind to get item crafting and casting so that the ogres have more than just brute strength to rely on. Plus, you can only imagine the spells an ogre would try to infuse in their items.
>>
>>21589007
He's got a point about the Climate Control, though. Getting that and fixing up Daphi would really improve our relations with the elves.
>>
>>21589023
True, True. Hat of clouds. Very nice.

>[x] [MAGIC] Climate Control(?)
>>
>>21589007
Well, in battle you obviously wont have the time to regenerate, so having Healing means that you're going to be much tougher to bring down
>>
>>21589007
Ogre regen + magic healing = ogres being able to get up from fatal wounds.
>>
>>21589052
And reattach lim- Oh wait.
>>
>>21589052
Also Ogre+Healing magic = ogres being able to save all of their little/fragiler friends.
>>
>>21589007
Short of goddess intervention ogres can't regenerate from things like missing limbs very well

If we get healing magic we can probably stick an arm back on and magic it so it works again or if we roll well enough a head
>>
>>21588722
Right, looks like our consensus is-

>Aquifer
>Food (Wheat potatoes)
>Crude Iron Armor

for

>Scimitars
>Healing
>Climate Control

Are we going to run out of aquifier pebbles?
>>
>>21589207
We'll only give them a couple. It's not like Ogir Place needs that many to begin with.
>>
>>21589207
not likely, unless we start giving them out to every one we meet. Give away one or two will not affect any thing.
>>
>>21589207

>>21589230
>>21589231
Basically, this.
>>
>>21589239
Why am I envisaging Aquifer Pebbles being used as grenades against enemy Bug tunnels?
>>
>>21589379
Proably won't make water fast enough without combined Aquamancy/Geomancy.

... agh. I'm really sorry, you guys, but I can't keep going tonight; I'm exhausted, and I've been feeling nauseous ever since about 10, and it hasn't gone away like I thought it would (and is, instead, making it hard for me to focus on typing and/or braining posts).

The only possible cause I can think of might be something that I ate today. That was at /3 pm/. So... yeah, ending the thread early to maybe go and lie down.

However, next thread will be this coming Sunday, 11/18, at 7 pm EST! Hope to see you guys there, and I'll do my best to make up for lost ground.
