The key to stealth has nothing to do with how quiet you are, or how fast or gracefully you move.

You don't even have to hide, you just have to evade notice. I drop the coat off by the door, since the black would stand out too much. I move at a brisk walk under the stairs and around the back, placing as much weight as I can into my arms on the rails to muffle my footsteps.

I hear a sharp clang nearby, as Rider and Saber engage each other on the balcony below the Food Court. I look over and see that Rin's trapped a level down, cut off from the hostages by the fighting. She glances my way only once, clearly contemplating another approach but decides to instead try and send a couple of blasts Shinji's way when she sees me.

Shinji for his part pull out a weird paddle from his pocket. Apparently it's some sort of ward, because he manages to nullify Rin's blasts with a few swipes as they approach. They begin their banter as Rider and Saber continue their duel. Rider's superior speed and agility are definitely letting her keep her own, since Saber has less room to maneuver. Shinji might not be winning, but he isn't losing. I can feel the barrier beginning to close as I reach the level Shinji's on. I see Archer looking for his shot....

I examine the situation objectively. The most important thing is to neutralize Shinji as quickly as possible. Archer could do it, but he might not be able to get a non-lethal shot off.

I begin to run towards Shinji. He slowly turns my way and his arrogant grin turns confused. In the back of my mind, as I pour more power into my limbs, I wonder if what I really wanted wasn't just an excuse to hit Shinji in the face.

I conclude that since the result's the same, maybe the intent doesn't really matter. Shinji pulls out what looks like a switchblade-knife while I twist to maximize the effectiveness of my punch.

With a thought, I reinforce my shirt, and Shinji's knife goes sliding across it without cutting. Meanwhile, with the extra momentum my physical reinforcement caused, He goes flying several feet away before hitting the ground in a tumble.

For a split second, I worry that I might've broken his neck, but he slowly starts to stand up, and then scramble towards the book he dropped. I calmly pluck it off the floor and toss it in the air, listening to the sound of Archer shredding it while never taking my eyes off Shinji.

"You just lost your Servant, you're out gunned and outnumbered. Surrender."

"You dare? RIDER!" He yells, and the girl appears on my left, jumping up from below. "Kill him!"

The girl nods, and then hesitates as she steps forward. "It seems I have different orders." She says after a moments pause, before stepping back.

He says, pulling out his phone and having a brief conversation I don't quite hear. He then walks down the stairs as the boundary field collapses, pausing as he comes next to Sakura. He turns to her and calls her a traitor, and then pauses once more as he gets to the door. He says something at her and makes a gesture.

"I hope." I respond, when I hear a voice behind us.

"The Priest said that he'd do what he could, but he couldn't even guess what he could do before he had a chance to examine her." She hesitates. "Our connection gives me something though. She's weak, and in a lot of pain. I think the priest put her to sleep to keep the worst of it from bothering her, but...." She's quiet for a moment. "She's not fading at least. She's not very strong, but she's there. Now that you're here, I'll let my physical form go."

"Less of a strain. If I need to protect her from something, I can come back, but...."

I nod, and give her shoulder a light squeeze. "I'll keep watch for now, and Rin's on her way as well." Rider nods, and then fades away.

It's about ten minutes later when Kirei comes out of the back. "She's alive." He says, seeing ym concerned face. "I'm not sure she'll stay like that forever, but she'll live for now."

"What do you mean?" I ask, before Saber steps between us.

"Shirou, this man was a Master in the last war. He was the one Kiritsugu feared the most."

"At the moment? I might be able to destroy most of it, and clear some of the damage. However, I couldn't remove all of it. I might be that destroying it in part would be more damaging in the long run. In adition some part of it are too close to her heart to operate on safely, and from the way it affects her Mana flow, it's bound to her as a type of familiar. Between it's entwined nature and the magical contract.... I don't believe it can be safely removed unless we can break one and find a way to keep her alive through the fatal wounding needed to remove it."

I like this idea. My plan was to abuse meta-knowledge a little, buddy up with Caster and get her sympathies on board with Sakura. (Caster know what it's like to be used and discarded by glory-seeking men, and Shinji has more than a few echoes of the man who fucker her over in life).

But seriously, Shirou removed Avalon and gave it back to Saber in Fate. So maybe if we were to ask Saber about it or maybe Kiritsugu had some notes around or something. Problem is that no one knows that Shirou has Avalon at the moment.

"The surgery would be rather risky without either of those available to us." He responds. "Having either some form of contract breaker or powerful healing magic would significantly reduce the risk for complete removal. Without either, I would rather optimistically give her slightly less than 10% chance of survival."

I glance over at Rin, who seems to have bitten a finger in an effort not to cry. "Can you think of anything else that might help?"

"Hmmm.... If I had access to more Mana that would help, but that almost goes without saying. Some herbs and substances would help as well. Perhaps if one of you spoke with her? People can do better in survival situations if they feel like they have a more compelling reason to live."

"That's all you can do for her?" I ask, feeling the weight of despair in my stomach.

"From the perspective of a healer? Yes." He answers. "However, I'm also a priest. I can provide some measure of comfort there as well, to her and you. Should the worst happen, I can also administer her last rites." He places a hand on my shoulder. "For now, I'm forcing her to sleep. Whatever triggers her health to worsen seems to require her to be awake. So at the least, she won't get worse. It's only a delaying tactic, but...."

"How long does she have?"

"With no treatment? I might be able to keep her for a week if I can keep her subdued. If I can remove it partially, then I can extend that to at least a month."

Rin speaks up after a few moments hesitation. "If we can help her somehow, I think we should. If nothing else a wish with the grail would heal her."

I give Rin a little squeeze. She responds with a slight sniffle. After a few moments of holding her, she finally talks. "I feel terrible. I don't know whether or I'm more worried about Sakura or more angry at myself for letting it happen."

"Hey." I say pulling her closer and making her look at me. "Whatever did and didn't happen to her, it isn't your fault."

Rin looks away. "I should've done something. I knew she wasn't exactly happy, but she keeps to herself so much I never imagined...."

Something hits me. This is a bit more than how a concerned friend would act. ".... There's something you aren't telling me."

For a long minute, Rin doesn't respond. Then she says it in a voice so quiet I can barely hear her. "She's my sister."

My heart skips a beat. "What?"

"She's my sister." She says more loudly, sitting up. "When I was little, not long before the last Grail war began, my father chose me as his successor. Normally a magic crest is passed onto one member of the family, and the rest are kept in the dark. But Sakura and I were both powerful enough Magically that we would both eventually discover our talents on our own." She brushes my arm off and stands up, walking a few paces away to the end of the row and she leans against the pew slightly. "So for reasons he never bothered to explain, he sent my sister to be raised by the Matou house since their bloodline was fading. I was told to stop thinking of her as my sister, and move on."

I'm not sure if she's asking me or not, but she seems almost desperate for an answer.

I wish I had one for her. That I could somehow make the pain stop, make everything better. But I suppose that there's a perfect world and there's the one we live in.

I reach out and pull her into a hug, and she cries into my shoulder for almost an hour before she calms down.

Archer enters the room shortly afterwards. "How is she?" After I explain the situation, he sighs deeply and leans against the wall. "Damn. All of that trouble and it still looks like we'll lose her." He looks at me. "If you think Caster might help or something, go. I can keep an eye on things here."

So in theory, a Servant could drink some of the Grail's power for themselves and receive a form of their own, not just a borrowed shell granted by the Grail. That was the goal of the Rider in the last war."

"I see...." I respond, before a thought occurs. "Wait, is that what he did? Is that why he's here still?"

"I don't see how he could have." She returns. "I was forced to destroy the grail before it could fully manifest. I suppose it's possible that he did manage to take a sliver of it's power for himself."
