The enemy commander is alone and can perfectly move his pawns around, the ragtag force moving 1 pawn at the time is not to blame, but does indeed make some mistakes, like attacking a sleeping monster. Guns and tanks versus swords and magic, an interesting concept, but this is a 300 scenario. Machine guns in hallways with grenades waiting laughs at medieval warrior forced to funnel inside.

For a battle to last two weeks is rare but not unprecedented. We currently only have leather armor and Traveler's Cloaks for defensive items.

As for the sword: the number in the box is the number you must match or roll below on a d10 in order to hit. The number by it is the number of dice you roll per action spent on attacking with that weapon. So [5] x 2 means you can roll 2 dice per action spent, and must roll a 5 or lower in order to hit. All weapons follow this format:

[rating] x Attacks

The format's a bit different for spells but that shouldn't be a concern if you want to go Knight.
