You are Anon, Street Fighter. Tonight, standing on top of a skycraper in Metro City, trying to ignore the floodlights and cameras ringing the roof, you prepare to take your first step onto the world stage.

>previous threads here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Street%20Fighter

Hordes of reporters, fight commentators and other showbiz type are waiting on the floor below you. For now, here in the stinging cold on the rooftop, it's just you and the Irish World Warrior, Rebecca Lane.

>say something before the fight?
>>
Let's try and be a good sport, you know: "Let's have a good fight", wish her luck etc etc.

I'm not good at pre-fight talk that isn't "Don't worry I'll call 911 when I'm done".
>>
Don't talk to the reporters. Tell Rebecca that you hope her trip was nice and that the two of you shall have an enjoyable fight, wish her the best of luck and all that.
>>
Let's fight like gentlem-- gentlewom-- whatever.
>>
Recommend some restaurants around the town, but speak so the reporters can't hear.
>>
WHEN I'M DONE WITH YOU, YOU'LL WISH YOU WERE BACK IN IRELAND CHASING POTS O' GOLD. I'M THE HAMMER OF METRO CITY AND YOU LADY ARE THE NAIL. YOU'VE GOT THE BALLS TO STEP UP, BUT THOSE BALLS WON'T BE ENOUGH.

Unrelatet, i have a feeling that we will loose today because you guys discarded our bowtie.

You transfer both sticks to your left hand and put out your right for a handshake. "Let's have a good fight," you say. Rebecca shakes your hand, suspicion in her eyes. Her handshake is firm, but not a strong as you'd expect. She's kind of...slight? Slight is a good word for it.

"Thanks. You too," she says. "There's no ref up here, do we just count to three and fight or what?"

"Sounds good to me," you say. "Also, can we agree right now not to throw each other off the roof? It sound silly but that seems to happen every time someone fights on top of a skyscraper."

"Deal," she says, smirking. She raises her hands in a ready stance you're not familiar with. "Three...two..."

>What's our fight strategy when she finishes counting down?
>>
>>21503727
Play the defense game for a while

We have the range advantage with our sticks
>>
>>21503727
We excel at close range, so we should test her by rushing in and unleashing the fury with our beatsticks. Everything else comes later. Seize the initiative, like our sensei told us back in the dojo.
>>
>>21503759
I dont think so, she has been stated to be an expert with kicks which have been stated to have a longer range than our sticks. Thats why we've been learning kicking. Unless i am mistaking something in which case i will shut up.
>>
>>21503727
What was her deal, anyway? Fighting-wise, I mean. She was super well-rounded right?
>>
>>21503727
Get in there and fuck her up. We may be able to just whack he on the head once or twice and knock her out quickly.
>>
>>21503807
>>21503790
From the thread she was introduced:
"First up, an Irish competitor named Rebecca Lane. A few self-defense courses awakened something in her, she dropped out of college and used the loans to travel the world seeking out new masters and new challenges," she says. She hands you a photo. "Mostly Muay Thai, but she's one of the most well-rounded martial artists I've ever seen. I'd peg her as one of the most dangerous fighters this time around."
>>
>>21503807
Great at Muay-Thai, and has a lot of weird tricks, but the the Muay Thai is the only thing she really excels at. Problem is that being great at Muay Thai translates to us getting turned into a bruised sack of cracked ribs if she gets us in a clinch.
>>
>>21503807
Super Well Rounded with the main fighting style being Muay Thai

I still say that we should get an idea of her attack range before going all crazy on her
>>
>>21503830
>>21503834
>>21503840

Shit. Shit, okay. Countering Muay Thai. Actually, knee-blocking their leg-kicks, which hit with the shin, is a pretty easy way to fuck up a Muay Thai person. If we see a kick coming, we could fuck the leg up something fierce with our brand new Heavy Sticks

"...one. Fight!" she finishes.

You decide to try setting the pace of the fight by stepping in and swinging. She dodges your first two range-finding strikes by stepping away, by the third she stands her ground and slips the strike.

"Is that all? Eskrima?" she asks. Her stance changes - now recognizably silat. "I was hoping to learn something new today."

On your next swing she intercepts it and gently redirects it downward. You recognize the motion - you practiced it enough time - and manage to jerk the stick free just before she manages to disarm and take it from you.

"Aw, so you've dabbled a bit elsewhere? No matter," she says. "Come at me, if you're hard enough."

>>

I am not sure if Saturn Launch would be a good idea, considering our judo knowledge is pretty pathetic.

Also, trying to mix it up against someone with a fuckton more experience with different styles might go over badly.

Its also far too early for a Free Drive.

I dislike all options...

Lets do a kick...
>>
>>21503989
Mixing it up may be a valid strategy. If we get her to defend against a certain style and attack with a different style it might throw her off.

May as well mix it up a bit. You feint with a right overhead without committing much energy to it. When her block rises you lash out with your right foot into her ribs, hard as you can.

She seems genuinely surprised as she backs up to make some pace, holding her rib.

"That's better," she says. "A bit light for a kick, though. My master at the Shaolin Temple would've broken half my ribs with that kind of opening."

"I thought you studied Muay Thai," you say, circling a bit.

"I've studied lots of stuff," she says. She steps in fast - faster than you expected - hands aligned in straight line in front of her. Wing Chun?

You jerk your head back, avoiding the first strike. A few more land in quick succession - fast, but lighter than you expected. You swing at her head and she backs away. Three, maybe four punches scattered across your chest.

"You're a tough one, aren't you?" she says, shifting stances again. This one's less familiar.

"So who've you fought so far?" you ask. "Evil sumo wrestlers, boxing waiters, rapping hatchet clowns?"

"Mostly just martial artists," she says. She feints with her lead hand. You move a stick to intercept and she withdraws. As you lead her back she keeps throwing a few of these light strikes.

"I kind of envy that," you say, throwing out a range-finding feint of your own. It stops well short of her, but she doesn't move back or react from this one in the slightest. Odd.

"I should point out this is kind of unfair," she says as she shifts styles again. Tiger Style? She doesn't seem to have the raw power for it. "I mean, have you noticed it yet? Try swingin'."

Nobody tells you what to do!

You try to headbutt her. She sidesteps it fairly easy, actually, the distance was too far for a headbutt to completely work. While sidestepping she throws out another light strike, jabbing her fingers into your shoulder. You swing wide with your left - slower than you usually do, actually, with some sort of new sharp pain in the shoulder.

"There it is," she says. "Surprised it took this many hits to start effecting you."

You swing with the right. Still fast, still no pain. She dodges it easily, though you manage to pull yourself away before she can hit.

>how should we handle this now?

>>21504653

Throw her! We need to find a range that works, and point-blank is not it. Having her leg just gives her a better chance to disarm us and do more of her pressure-point stuff, disabling us further. if we can get a throw without getting ourselves on the ground (e.g. some sort of akiyama vs. shields judo throw) then we can reset the distance.
>>
>>21505156
This is a thought. We have her leg, so crack her in the caught leg with our stick. Not in the shin; that's pointless against a muay thai fighter.
>>
>>21505156
Quite. Disable leg, smack her about, toss her.
>>
Rolled 8, 5 = 13

>>21505154
My worry is that her being this close with her leg trapped also takes our arm out of the picture- assuming we can even hold her leg with a weak arm. She already showed she's capable of disarming our sticks, and at this range, with one arm to defend with, she'll probably do that no problem. Then we're unarmed, point-blank with a chick who's already disabled and arm and can do lord knows what else to us to get free- and then she'll knee us, at which point we implode.
>>
>>21505188
>Then we're unarmed
That's precisely what our new, faster telescoping sticks are for.
>>
It's not gentlemanly, but you're kind of past that. You swing for her knee, had, with the off hand stick.

"Fuck!" she shouts. She throws everything into a palm strike at your left shoulder. You pull away just enough to avoid the worst of it, releasing her leg. She throws more punches - a ridiculous number - all over your torso before limping back.

You don't like where this is going.

"I thought you were a gentleman," she says. "The old standards, all that."

>"A gentleman still fights to win."
>"And you're no lady." You don't care if it doesn't quite fit.

I'm worried about trying to get them out when we've got one worthwhile arm and she's this close- we could easily end up with our other arm all screwed up too, and then we're in a lot of trouble.

"A gentleman still fights to win," you say. You try moving your arms. Hurts like hell, but it mostly works.

"Hahahaha. Just fucking with you," she says. "You think you're the first person to try that?"

"That's...so you tried guilting me into giving up?" you ask. You raise your sticks. Burns a bit.

"Everything's fair game in a fight. That's what makes it fun," she says. She stretches out the leg experimentally. Doesn't seem to be much worse for the wear. "You know what your real issue is? You expect everyone to be all noble and shit, like you try to be. Martial artists are selfish to the core, or else we wouldn't be in this business."

"That's hardly fair," you say.

"It is, think about it. All the time we spend in the gym, practicing the same moves over and over. Could've spent that time helping people, seeing your family, working in a soup kitchen, whatever. Instead what have we got to show for it?"

We want to be the best because we want to help people, be it by smacking down a gang terrorising the city, by giving people something to strive for, or maybe just to be able to put on a good show.

You think over the friendships you've made since you came into this business. That night on Wolverine Mountain with Tatsuya. Being there for Belle when she needed a helping hand. Working together with Ellie to convince Moira to leave the sword at the dojo so she doesn't stab some nuns.

More specifically, you think to Eagle. To that awkward kid watching television, and how this stylish motherfucker seemed to open up a whole new world to you.

You remember the TV cameras for the first time in a long time. The world is watching. Who knows who could be listening right now?

"Inspiration," you say. "We can show people that with enough dedication you can be better than who you are now."

>highest numbers for the two individual phases of the move

You throw the two in your hand, the heavy sticks. Rebecca crosses her arms in front of her face to block them.

By the time she lowers the block you're already airborn, the two backup sticks in your hands. They strike like lightning.

She stays standing for longer than you expected, you'll give her that. Even manages to switch halfway into another stance before her eyes go blank and she slumps to her knees.

"You fought like a true warrior," you say. She jerks awake, but doesn't bother to stand.

"Fuck. How long was I out?" she asks.

"Few seconds."

"That'll do it," she says, slowly coming to her feet. "Nice job with the hidden sticks. Don't think that's gonna work twice, though."

"You're good," you say. You can hear the media machine surrounding the tournament working itself into a frenzy, ready to burst through the door if you two don't head down now. "If you want to see the good the martial arts can do, stick around Metro City. I'd be delighted to beat up on some Mad Gear goons with you."

"Yeah?" she says. She stumbles a bit as she walks. You offer her your arm, which she surprisingly accepts. "That actually sounds kinda fun. Might take you up on that when we're done talking our heads off here."

I'm not gonna explain why Other M was an abomination that completely ruined more or less every single piece of established Metroid stuff it touched, because you know damn well why. Even with different designs, even more sexualized designs, Samus remained constant as a character up until that game.

>>21506778
It seems like you're saying that what a person says defines their character more than what they do. I hope that's not what you're saying, because it's wrong. Samus's actions defined her character. She was a badass space bounty hunter who fought space dragons and blew up planets without a single fuck given. Other M's "characterization" ran counter to everything the franchise displayed about who she was.

Samus generally didn't emote at all--relative levels of fuck are purely speculative. There was no character there, she basically served as your avatar for shooting and flipping. But it's great that this is how you want to feel about Samus, and it makes why other m bothers you even better

Yeah, aside from the manga, which took it's entire script from the guy who MADE Other M.

The two stories don't match up.

There was characterization in several of the games and the tie in manga.

Other M also invalidates all of Metroid Prime.

Not directly, but as in >>21507027, the director in an interview effectively said Prime never happened.

Because the many things Other M did to invalidate the plot of the Prime trilogy.

Regarding that, all you have to do is to elaborate on their background a bit more. State their personality, their story (keep it not too ridiculous), their styles and moveset. And, hey, maybe even their theme too.

Of course, give the Storyteller a bit of leeway to adapt the character into the story, and trust his decisions.

A lot of that part of the universe might not be in the purview of Anon's story. He's a prize fighter with ambition, but the odds of him fighting a commando are about the same as an MMA fighter in our world having to do so. Extraordinary circumstances may allow it, or an ex-commando may have gone into the World Warrior tournament, but that'd have to be it.

Not to say it definitely won't happen, and I kinda dig the augmented suit thing, it just wouldn't quite jibe with Anon's tale so far. The joke-theme martial artists are half there to show how far the standards in the martial arts community have fallen (for example, Tha Hatchetman), sometimes because I just think it'd be funny (the BJJ yoga master who uses his superhuman flexibility to choke the shit out of you.) Also a lot of our opponents are based on the "give me a fighter! stat!" so I tend to just roll with what comes out of that. That's how Belle and Moira were created, and they're two of my favorite characters now.

Never played Streetwise because of the terrible reviews, I was just going to toss it in the pile of games that get ignored for lore purposes.

I figured she would look very slight, almost kind of hipster-ish, them make up for not having a powerful frame by having inhumanly perfect martial arts technique. Then it kinda went in the Hokuto Shinken-lite direction instead.

"at the time"? If the situation changed I hope it was due to making the short Swedish brunette your wife, in which case congrats. If not, sorry man.

I think that's everything in the comment-ish section that I wanted to address? If you had any other comments or questions you can ask, I'll try to answer whatever as long as I'm awake.
