You are Anon, World Warrior. With your next match mere days away, you've been given a choice of anywhere in America to be the background for your battle.

"So how about it?" Jen asks. "Where do you want to fight?"

Huh. I'm actually here for the very first post. I always miss it by a dozen or two.

Well, the obvious answer is Metro itself, perhaps atop some skyscraper like Southtown's former Geese Tower. Then again, we could do with a change of pace. After all, we're one of America's reps, so we have to somehow encapsulate the entire US. Maybe some docks or someplace tropical like Miami.

Suggest atop a Metro skyscraper, but get some suggestions from Jen.

Considering Metro and Southtown are both knockoff New York, and we're not from the Midwest, deep South, or anywhere tropical, it'd make sense to do it here.

Metro Skyline, midnight. Gotta get all the lights out.

You debate some other locations, but in your heart you know you've gotta stick with your hometown.

"Metro City," you say.

"We can make it work," Jen says. "We expected that, honestly. We've arranged permits to construct an arena on top of a skyscraper."

"Wait, isn't that a little dangerous?" you ask.

"There will be safety nets," she says. "As long as she doesn't throw you too far off the side of the building you'll be fine."

"I might throw her," you say.

"It's technically possible," she says. She sets aside the briefcase and its giant pile of paperwork and items to take care of. "So tell me how your training's been. I hear you got engaged?"

"Look, you've got today left before you have to go into work mode. I suggest just using it to wrap up whatever you want to do in Southtown." She stands, taking her briefcase with her. "We'll send info once we have the match arranged. Until then try to take care of yourself, all right?"

You wait a few minutes for the room to stop spinning. Eventually Ellie comes into the living room with a bowl of cereal, apparently none the worse in spite of the alcohol last night.

"How's your head?" you ask.

"It's fine," she said. "I can handle my liquor. You're looking pretty rough, though."

"I feel pretty rough," you say. "Hey, you know Southtown better than I do. Do you have a preferred place for martial arts gear?"

"Yeah, there's a place on the east side that gives us a discount," she says. "I can go with you if you want. Need to pick up some new hand tape anyway. Mind if Moira comes? She was supposed to come by to practice for a bit this afternoon."

"Not at all," you say. "Can't hurt to get another opinion."

---

Two hours later the three of you are in a frankly terrifying shop. Swords, knives, shuriken, sai, kama, all the way to things you don't recognize are hanging from every square inch of wall space (save one wall, which seems to be where everything non-lethal is crammed.) More deadly ordinance is behind the counter. You and Ellie head to the counter while Moira looks around the shop, picking up various swords and trying out their heft.

"Hey Sal," Ellie says to the quiet mirror-shaded man behind the counter. "How's business?"

"Who wants to know?" he rasps. It actually seems kinda friendly when he says it, somehow.

"I'm looking for some good sticks," you say, slightly nervous. "Something for eskrima."

"I reckon we got that," he says. "You want collapsible or solid? One's a bit faster and easy to conceal, but you lose a little bit of impact. Other's gonna hit like Judgment Day, but you trade a little bit of the speed."

>>21488008
It's a general idea. A shirt (long-sleeved), vest and bowtie with whatever pants work best seems to be generally supported and that's what I want most. After that, we can just add or take away stuff. Change the long coat for a sport jacket, change the tophat for a bowler or lose the hat entirely. I do like the idea of a jacket or coat to wear before and after the fight, though.
>>

Yeah, we can probably afford to lose a little bit of hitting power to get some speed. Also, we get to walk around in our nice clothes without looking like we're headed for an ungentlemanly asswhipping if they're stashed in a pocket.
>>
>>21488071

Collapsible for the primary. We tend to surprise ourselves with our power, anyway. Plus, with faster sticks, we can debilitate the opponent sooner. If they whiff a punch, that arm has just taken four to six sticks in immediate succession.

"Why not both?" Ellie asks. "Just use whichever one you need for the situation."

...you don't have a good reason why not to. You hand over the money and Sal hands both over to you, including a holster so the collapsible batons can remain hidden in your waistband. If the right scenario comes up you can throw the heavy batons and pull out the collapsibles. At last, a projectile option. You're gonna have to find some cans or something to practice throwing with.

"Thanks," you say. "While I'm out and about, you know any good clothing stores in the area?"

"I think we probably shop in slightly different places," Ellie says.

"There's a good uniform and costume place up the road," Moira says. She indicates her habit. "It's where I picked up all of these."

"Yeah," she says. "Like in 8 Diagram Pole Fighter. You show up and you just fight nuns til they let you stay."

"That's not..." Ellie starts to say.

"Shh. Let her talk," you interrupt. "When did you decide you wanted to become a nun?"

"Not long. After I graduated high school I couldn't think of much else I wanted to do, so I found a convent and asked to join."

"And they asked you to fight someone to prove you could stay?" Ellie asks.

"No, they just asked me to get a degree in theology and spend some time as a novitiate," she says. She actually looks nostalgic. "Anyway, I camped out in the convent garden that night. The mother superior came to see me the next morning and told me I had to go."

"...did you?" you ask. You have a sinking feeling where this might go.

"Of course not. Then she put a hand on my shoulder to lead me out and I flipped her, then the rest of them kind of piled on and I had to flip all of them."

"Please say these were kung fu nuns or something," Ellie says. "Or that they were like a secret order of assassins."

"No, just nuns," she says. "Actually weren't very tough. Hard to flip because they didn't know how to fight, you know? Anyway, after that they let me live in a tent in the garden for a few weeks before they sent another nun to fight me. A proper fighting nun this time, a boxer."

"They have those?" you ask.

"Yeah. She put up more of a fight, but not enough. After I defeated her they stopped trying to throw me out. I mostly just do chores in the garden and pray now."

"If they were trying to throw you out why did you stay?" you ask.

"That's what they do, when you ask to become a nun they say 'no' three times to make you prove your dedication," Moira says.

"That's Judaism," you say. "When you try to convert to Judaism the rabbi is supposed to say no three times. The nuns were serious the first time, you have to go to a school for it."

"Oh. ...oh," she says.

Behind you, you can hear Sal sniffing a bit. He seems to be wiping a tear from his eye.

"That's the most beautiful thing I've ever heard," he says. "Li'l missy, you can have a sword. On the house."

While Moira thanks the man and went to pick out a katana Ellie leans in. "Giving her a sword might be a terrible mistake," she whispers.

"Welp. Let's take a look at those candles," you say, dismounting from the horse. You take the left, he takes the right.

"Mine's got a riddle under it," Joe says. "Says 'What can you catch and not throw?'"

"Mine too. Says "What gets wetter and wetter the more it dries?""

"A cold and a towel," you say. You get the impression that whoever built this gate just took the first two riddles that popped up when you type "Riddles" in Google or something.

The candles light up.

"The gate's not opening," Joe says.

"What? But...but we solved the riddles," you say.

"...you know, the bridge is concrete. The gate is wood," Joe says.

You are Anon, Street Fighter. Ellie and Moira (now holding a sword and positively beaming) are going through the racks at a local menswear store.

"How about this?" Ellie asks. "Waistcoat, nice shirt, could look classy but still like you're about to get down to work."

"They have tuxedos here," Belle says. "Just sayin'."

>Going mostly by consensus from earlier - is the "waistcoat, long-sleeved nice shirt and reasonable dress pants" look what we're going for? With a nice jacket to throw over it when we're not fighting?

I support this. As for footwear, maybe we can get some decent-looking boots? Fighting in dress shoes is kind of a pain and they make good-looking, serviceable boots anyway.

Also, bowler hat. Yay or nay?

I think it needs to be dress shoes unless they make fancy boots, a gentleman can't compromise on his attire, and no hat for me.

Before long you have a nice ensemble picked out. You even find some boots that look nice enough you can wear them without looking silly. Should improve your footwork to have something a bit more comfortable. You briefly consider a hat, then decide it's impractical.

"Now the real issue," Ellie says, motioning to her neck.

"No," you say.

"It makes you look like a Doctor Who cosplayer," she says.

"It's classy!" you say.

"Even Eagle moved on from wearing a bowtie," Moira says. "Didn't he wear a cravat?"

"Look, you can try a cravat or a nice tie. Lately it's also acceptable to just leave the top button undone, especially when you're doing something this physical. Looks kinda...masculine," she says. "Or you could keep looking like a Downton Abbey reenactor. It's up to you."

Yeah, I think it's time to trade in the bowtie for now. It feels a little tryhard at the moment. I like the unbuttoned top, but the tie and cravat are both good.

Try the one button thing for a bit but maybe see about getting a more normal tie since we're here.

We're already doing the vest and button shirt. The issue is if we hang up the bowties for something new, like a cravat, tie, or au naturale.

I say we need a change of pace for our global debut, so lose the bowtie. No one says we can't try it later.

Not convinced about a bolo tie. It'd probably be better if we had SOMETHING to put in that little metal circle, like an emblem of some sort.
>>
You're feeling pretty evenly split on this, actually. Maybe only very slightly favoring the one-button-undone thing? Ellie seems to like it, for whatever that's worth, maybe you can try it for a day or two. Your hands only shake a little bit when you start untying it.

"How about I keep the bowtie in reserve and just try the one-button-undone thing for a few days?" you say. "I don't want to switch to a cravat, that would be copying Eagle a little too directly. And a tie is right out, I saw Who Am I. Not happening."

Ellie smiles a bit as she straightens your lapels. "Alright, sounds like we're set. Looking sharp, if you don't mind my saying so."
>>
>>21489244
Fine. No cravat for now. That said, tie and vest is always pretty snazzy, but we should try our first fight with an open button for a more relaxed look. Besides, airing ourselves out might actually help us in a fight.

"I didn't know you could be this cool! Phew."
"The vest?"
"Nah, the air."

"To its devotees, the bow tie suggests iconoclasm of an old world sort; a fusty adherence to a contrarian point of view. The bow tie hints at intellectualism, real or feigned, and sometimes suggests technical acumen, perhaps because it is so hard to tie. Bow ties are worn by magicians, country doctors, lawyers, and professors and by people hoping to look like the above. But perhaps most of all, wearing a bow tie is a way of broadcasting an aggressive lack of concern for what other people think." -Warren St. John, the New York Times.

I think the answer is clear. We stick with the bow tie.

>>
>>21491177
Lack of concern for what others think of you isn't mutually exclusive with considering the counsel of friends. Besides, our whole reason for fighting could be summed up as "iconoclasm of the old world sort." We do things our way, and in a world of high-priced sellouts, we stand firm to our convictions because that's the way it was in the beginning, and that's how it should be.
>>
>>21491330
No I'm pretty sure that line has been crossed. This reminds me. Belle's dad is a hardcore catholic, right. Belle might most likely end up dating Moira. Imagine Belle's dad finds out about that AND that she's basically a fake nun that beat her way into a monastery.

Suddenly, Anon being assaulted by a crazy religious assassin seems less likely, while Moira's looking like a pretty likely target. Fake nun lesbian? Belle's dad is gonna be mad.

Does it count as waifuing if it's between two side characters? It's probably just shipping at that point.

We still probably shouldn't do it.

Great, should only stick to an [spoilers] tag for that "ingenious-but-not-really" commentary in the future. Anyway, as for the Hat vs nice hair debacle: nice hair may seem inspired by bishounen anime(another thing that would play with the "Anon" angle, if Fightchan has an anime board). We could also wear a top hat or a bowler, provided we took it out once we enter a building (this plays into the anachronism-gentleman territory). A Beret (I'm thinking a subdued Tartan that goes with the overcoat) would be good too, if only for the Intellectualism angle. Just no Fedoras, they are only used by unironical hipsters nowadays.

If we went for both, we could look like this, Lots of Swag(personality, creativity) but little Style (Etiquette, Modesty?).

I'm pretty fond of how Anon's hair looked when we were getting art here and there for a few threads. Matched his ideal of classy without being anachronistic.

A nice hat could work, perhaps? I'd shy away from one personally because they seem to work out so seldomly in real life, but Anon's controlled by more than just me. And let's face it, his world is a hell of a lot weirder than real life.
