Last time, the party ventured into the third level, facing the Goblins in their lair. By using fire to divide their forces, they managed to clear out the goblins, but lost Street Fighting Man in the battle. They then returned to hunt down the Goblin king, taking his magic axe and imprisoning the surviving goblins for use as labour and troops. Finally, they took the Goblin treasure chest and discovered that the caves and level three of Gygar's castle were linked through a passage past a secret door.

In addition to gaming, I want us to discuss the possibility of joining in Rubyleaf/Spooky's cloud campaign. The benefits would be greater variety in arms and armour, more referees and players, and cleric spells at level 1. The downside would be it taking about 40 more XP to level, and it being harder to heal through timeskips. I think it's worth it, since we'd have more opportunity to play (especially when I won't be able to run this game at a convenient time for you guys) and the Honey Pot would have actual adventurer clients.

Aww, yeah, Castle of Gygar time!

Regarding the cloud, I've been thinking that the day=day thing might be unwieldy in terms of character travel. Maybe 1 day on /tg/ = 3 days in Grea/tg/ary?

Sounds good, and gives us a lot more leeway in running adventures
>>
>>21456978
It does force the referees to make a consensus on weather, rather than just do something awesome like say that the weather in Grea/tg/ary is whatever it's like at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin at the time.

On the other hand, longer years are possible.

Dorfs actually level quicker, and longbows and crossbows do more damage.
>>
>>21456995
Weather won't be entirely shared though. I'm having the north-west area of my hex be dryer than the rest, due to the mountains blocking rainclouds.
>>
>>21457020
No problem: your hex, your rules. But if we fix Hex 0 to something objective (but objective), it means that all the referees can modify from a common starting point.

Currently the Google doc is the main registry. I have to make some extra files to organize it better.

Did you want to play CoG, play in the Cloud at large, and/or referee in the Cloud?
>>
>>21457127
I hadn't really thought of that, we'd mostly been doing the game just on 4chan.
Maybe we can talk on a comment thread on the castle gygar google docs?
Characters are pretty simple. Roll 18d6 to determine stats (being 3d6 each for str, int, wis, dex, con, cha), pick a class (fighter, cleric, magic user, thief, elf, dwarf, halfling), then 3d8 times 10 for starting gold.
I let my characters start with maximum hp at first level, since basic's deadly enough.
>>
>>21457160
>I let my characters start with maximum hp at first level, since basic's deadly enough.

I still think this is kinda heretical. But /tg/ doesn't really know how to old school D&D. Might have to be a convention to avoid too many casualties.

cloud campaign seems interesting, but I am a bad DM. More traditional weekly meetings via Maptools or Roll20 are my preference.
>>
>>21457581
I won't try to fast-talk you into it, but this should be clarified. There's no obligation to referee in the Cloud campaign. "Pure" players are a positive good, otherwise we would have too many chiefs and not enough indians! Similarly you can play as much or as little in the Cloud as you like - the hope is that there would always be at least one session running.
>>
>>21457581
No need to feel like you have to run any games, just enjoy having more players around and more possible adventures to go on.
I like running games on /tg/, it's encouraging to see people say they enjoy watching the games.
>>
>>21457581
Also, I'm not super familiar with those, most of my online roleplaying being via forums like rpol. Is there a way to allow any player to access and alter maps? Because those could be useful for the party to make their maps, which would be useful on level 3 (which I've only got drawn up in hard copy) and in In Search of the Unknown (where messing with player's navigation is a big part of the dungeon, though dwarven stonecunning will help a fair bit)
>>
>>21457610
reading the L&L advanced companion now.
>>21457667
Maptools allows you to place and stretch map images, freehand draw, and draw via grid. You can place character tokens and stat them out, write macros for specialized rolls that pull from character data (with some srs effort for inter-token interaction). Players get some access to these tools, GMs get total access, and the game host can set a GM password so random tools can't just come in and delete everything. program is written in java and all users MUST be using the same version.

I'm not as familiar with Roll20, but it's web based, so there aren't any compatibility issues, although I'm not a fan of its interface. It's /supposed/ to do everything Maptools does, but better.

Both are free
>>
>>21457701

Best to just read the Core Rules. Advanced Edition Characters are LL trying to be AD&D.
>>

So you two want to go out and do something, or wait for more players to show up?
>>
>>21457842

Rolling a retainer of my own. Power star doors require appropriate power. I enter the local tavern and approach the nearest adventurous woman (dwarf, I hope), "ave a look at me family jewels!"

So, first Rubyleaf should decide what spells his clerics have prepared. You'd probably prepare Hold Portal as usual.

Haley takes that about as well as any modern lady, since it's coming from a 5 CHA dorf. She offers to show him her stones.

A 40' long wooden table stands at the center of the room, set with a dozen sets of silverware, dusty crystal wine goblets, and shiny yellow plates. >>21460724
"the story thus far" is a thing communicated to all new adventurers.

"Oh, so 'ere really BE a dragort up on the mount above Castle Gygar! We already killed a nest o' giant rats in the caverns below the mount, but 'ere could be more. Come along, an ye moight claim 'at bounty."

Yes, there was actually talk of a dragon high in the mountains over Mistamere.

The fighter looks interested in the cleric's news, though nods to the dwarf. "Aye, I will accompany you. I am Leod Reorsted, here is to hoping we gain much glory and gold out there." He says, moving to follow. He was already packed up, so there wouldn't be any detours required for Leod before heading off.

Let's head down the easternmost stable stairs, pausing to have a listen before descending into the darkness.

Heading down, you know there are two entrances to the third level. Through the east stairway, heading down to the Goblin lair cleared out earlier, and through the west stairway, down to the Kobolds you made peace with earlier

Ignorant of the fighting going on the the castle, gruber wanders around the houses and shops of the common-folk. "beesh dun een live underground!" he slurs to a horrified passing noblewoman, obviously startled by the previously unseen wandering bumpkin. To the west, the passage opens immediately into a 20' by 30' room, at the southernmost edge of its east wall. At the northernmost edge of its west wall a passage leads west. They stayed there until an army of barbarians came down from the north, and at the promise of reward from the rulers of Greatgary went out and shattered them with their strenght and magic. Twenty to thirty years ago, they supposedly left to go north, leading a small force of men to attack the Barbarian homelands, and never returned.

>>
>>21462536
Also you have to say which. Dwarves and thieves aren't on the same table.
>>
Rolled 8

>>21462562
Holy hell those are some good stats. Almost tempted to swap to him as my main PC.

...Eh. We'll see if Leod or Krago survive.
>>
Anything you want to do before setting out?
>>
>>21462622
I'm ready. So far as I know we are taking Krago, Webby, Chuck, and Haley?
>>
Leod blinks at Cleode, as Krago glares at the cleric. "He beat me in arm wrestling. Reason enough to bring him along in my eyes." The fighter replies with a shrug. "Do you believe that we should find a thief before leaving, or should we just press forth?"
>>
>>21462654
Sounds good, a thief is definitely useful
>>
"Onwards, to gold and glory!" Leod exclaims now that their party is rounded off, moving to start marching toward their destination.
>>
>>21462662
"We are already splitting the treasure 6 ways and we all know thieves take more than their fair share. I say we limit the number of scrupleless individuals to one."
>>
After setting out from Mistamere Town (with Haley, Chuck, Webberan and Krago), you walk for hours through mountain paths and craggy hills. Eventually, you reach the place where the Quasqueton caverns are said to lie, and after a short search find the entrance in the south face of a rocky hill. It's a 10 foot wide passage, and sixty feet down is a closed door.

Dare you enter Zelligar's magical realm?
>>
>>21462731
Actually 4 ways, NPCs have half shares.
>>
>>21462761
You are a horrible person for making that reference.

But, yes, heading on in. Put the thief in front to check for traps. Both via looking for them and if nothing else tripping them before we fall victim.
>>
>>21462761
"Quickly now, lads!" Cleom says in an excited voice as he takes up there rear, "we must lay claim that workshop!"
>>
>>21462800
Opening the doorway, you see the path continues ahead into the darkness. One of you strikes a torch or lantern, and advances. About 10 feet in there are two stone alcoves to either side of the path, 10 foot square. You continue on another 50 feet, and there are another two alcoves. Krago says "Those aren't solid rock. There are hidden doors in there, but I can't see how to open them from this side." Thirty feet ahead you think you see two more alcoves, and on the ground some long thin creatures, about a foot long. You can't see them easily though.

Party goes first. It seems the creatures are some sort of arthropod, like a big centipede. Their pincers look pretty vicious though, and their bright colour suggests poison
You need 10 or better to hit. I'll roll for Chuck and Haley, you each roll for your retainers.

Chuck takes his sword and cuts at one of the things, as Haley slings a stone

>>
Cleode takes no action for the first round.
>>
>>21463017
>>21462983
The three centipedes are smashed to pieces. PCs get 5XP, retainers 2 or 3. Moving foreward, you see ten feet after the third pair of alcoves are two steps leading up, into what looks like an intersection. You think you see three or four bodies slumped around there.
>>
>>21463058
Is there any point in having Chuck sneaking forward to take a look without a torch? If so, I do that.
>>
Seems a little risky. I think Leod would ask Haley to take a shot at one of the corpses with her sling as he readies his heavy crossbow for if the 'corpses' get up.
>>
>>21463115
It doesn't count as risk if it is the retainers that are in danger, but I'll defer to your mutilation of corpses.
>>
No, but Krago could with his infravision. As he steps foreward between the alcoves, there is a booming voice from the right. "WHO DARES ENTER THIS PLACE AND INTRUDE UPON THE SANCTUARY OF ITS INHABITANTS?" Then from the left, "ONLY A GROUP OF FOOLHARDY EXPLORERS DOOMED TO CERTAIN DEATH!" They speak together "WOE TO ALL WHO PASS THIS PLACE! THE WRATH OF ZELLIGAR AND ROGAHN WILL BE UPON THEM! AH HA HA HA HA HA Ha Ha ha ha ha...ha...ha..."
Krago says the intersection goes left, right, and ahead. After 20 feet the left and right paths turn back towards the south. The one ahead goes further than he can see, at least 60 feet, but has two doors just after the intersection to the left and right, and paths branching off left and right as well.
He also says there are five bodies up there. They look like four men, one a magic user, and a dwarf.
>>
>>21463115
The corpses do not move or react in any way.
>>
>>21463193
Cleode shoves past Krago and begins searching the corpse of the magic user for any valuable magical trinkets.
>>
>>21463202
I don't suppose there's any ethical concerns with looting the bodies, if they haven't already been?

Hmm. Leod wants to move forward and barring surprises, once everyone is ready, open the left door.

Also, I imagine Krago dislikes Cleode's rudeness.
>>
>>21463226
The magic user is impaled with a sword, holding him up against the wall.
In his robe is a purse with 2gp, some garlic buds, and an ornate wand
>>
>>21463226
In about 10 minutes it's time to clock out, so I'll be gone for about 20 minutes as I ride home.
>>
>>21463256
Okay, see you then
>>
>>21463252
"V-vampires?" Cleode whispers, holding up the garlic buds with one hand while attempting to sneakily pocket the wand with the other.

He gazes at the sword and searches the other corpses.

"Do you think they killed one another?"

Last post until I get home. Cleode will follow Leod's orders until then.
>>
>>21463314
One of the men has 5gp in his purse as well.

The other two men have strange and wild hairstyles. You think they may be berserkers, who fought with the other three and killed each other. From the blood trail, you think the dwarf survived the fight and succumbed to his wounds.
All armour, weapons, and other valuables have been stripped from the corpses
>>
>>21463314
Leod does not appear amused by Cleode's attempt to sneak away the wand. "Maybe. And, it appears they did slay one another. Perhaps because of an argument over loot?" He suggests dryly. He looks at the corpses and shakes his head. "We'll drag them out and bury them on our way out. Meanwhile, Chuck, if you would attempt to listen for anything behind the doors, please?"
>>
>>21463441
He listens at the doors. "There's something behind the one on the right, but I can't quite hear it."

You can go through the left or right door, left or right downstairs path, foreward and then left or right, or ahead into the darkness.
>>
>>21463487
Leod considers for a few moments, before setting down his lantern next to the doorway. "...Everyone get ready, we're going to confront whatever monsters may be in the room on the right." He declares, hefting his sword and shield.

Dang, almost a hit.

>>21464102
Leod shoves the goblet in his backpack after it's appraised, and makes sure the weapons and armor of the goblins and hobgoblins are looted too if possible.

"Now, do we pursue, or go find out what's behind the other door?"
>>
>>21464110
Cleode stares at Leod wide-eyed.

"You can't just go grabbing goblets, friend! Wizards love to curse their goblets! You could have lost your fingers or worse!"

After reprimanding Leod, Cleode turns to face the direction in which the hobgoblins fled.

"Well, they know we are here and we really don't want them to surprise us later, yes?"
>>
>>21464136
Looking down the passage the hobgoblins went, you see it's a 20 foot passage south to a door left open in their haste to flee. All your can see is the start of a bench agains the room's wall, the rest is shrouded in darkness
>>
"Says the man that pocketed the wand of a Magic User?" Leod points out mildly. He nods his agreement, and quickly retrieves his lantern before moving to follow the hobgoblins. "Krago, what do your dwarven eyes see?" He whispers.
>>
>>21464266
"The room's about 20' by 40'. There are benches around the room, earthenware mugs, and a large keg which must have once held ale. To our left is a door, through which our foes must have fled. Oh, and there's a statue of a nude human woman in the middle of the room."
>>
>>21464318
"Hmm... They know the way and lay of the land and we don't. I say we simply keep in mind they fled this way, and go back to check out the other door we passed, the one on the left. Clear out what's close to the entrance before pressing in too deep."
>>
Hey Dungeon Master, I interested in joining this. Now, I already rolled up a character in Cloud, so should I roll up a new one for this, or would it be okay to just use him? Seems like a bad time to be jumping in though.
>>
"Didn't you hear your dwarf friend? There is a /statue/ down there. It is common knowledge that wizards hide their valuables in the hollow cavities of statues to be safe from enterprising thieves and the like. What say you we pop down there and tip it over, just to be safe?"
>>
>>21464474
Well, technically I suppose your character could always come in alone (or alone with whatever retainers they have) and hook up with the party?

>>21464518
Leod stares at Cleode for a long moment. "...If you really want to, go right ahead. However, Chuck should probably search for traps first before you go touching it."
>>
>>21464474
You can join in with the same character. Just join in, they're not too far from the entrance

Chuck enters, but doesn't find any traps. He does see that there is a sack on the far side of the pedestal the statue stands on, filled with 820 silver pieces
>>

Alvero, cleric.

Cleode and Webby follow Chuck into the statue room.

"Well then, Webber, you are far more strapping than I. Please attempt to shatter that statue, if you will."
>>
>>21464666
Anyway, Alvero, you enter the caverns. About 140 feet ahead you see a light shining out of a door
>>
>>21464682
Leod and Krago stand well back, keeping watch.
>>
>>21464682
He tries to shove the statue over, but in unable to do so.

The statue is a masterpiece, made of quality marble. It's probably worth a lot more intact than anything that would be hidden inside, with the main problem being that you'd need a team of many labourers to get it out.
>>
>>21464690
Yeah, misspelled that. Anyway...

Mace and lantern at ready, the cleric marches. Terrible rumors abound of this place, he sought to cleanse it of its shadows. Spying the light he heads towards it wary for any tricks foul creatures might have in store.
>>
>>21464732
"Truly a marvelous piece. All the more reason to hide valuables inside. No one would think to shatter a masterwork sculpting. Unfortunately, we've not the tools to deal with it at the moment, Webber. We'll have to come back."
Shaking his head in disappointment, Cleode heads back towards the room with Leod and co.
>>
>>21464772
As you walk towards the light, you hear booming voices speak
"WHO DARES ENTER THIS PLACE AND INTRUDE UPON THE SANCTUARY OF ITS INHABITANTS?" "ONLY A GROUP OF FOOLHARDY EXPLORERS DOOMED TO CERTAIN DEATH!" "WOE TO ALL WHO PASS THIS PLACE! THE WRATH OF ZELLIGAR AND ROGAHN WILL BE UPON THEM! AH HA HA HA HA HA Ha Ha ha ha ha...ha...ha..."
>>
>>21464799
Continuing on, you arrive at the door with the light, and find the party there.
>>
>>21464785
Leod just shakes his head. He straights suddenly as the booming voices speak out again, whirling about to face the doorway with sword and shield branished. "Who goes there?!"
>>
>>21464799
"... Well then. Guess the rumors of taint aren't mistaken." Alvaro muttered to himself, felling slightly awkward talking to himself. Perhaps it would of been better to find others to help... Either way, too late to turn back. He continues towards the light.
>>
>>21464799

"It...It must have some sort of trigger." Cleode whispers, "A trigger that we missed. If we didn't even detect the trigger for the welcome message, how likely are we to notice the triggers for deadly traps?"
>>
>>21464830
>>21464815

"It is I fou-- You aren't a foul creature." Alvaro started strong, but ended put off at the sight ahead of him. "Guess I wasn't the first to get here. That happen every time people walk through there?. Name's Alvaro, man of the sun." He gave a curt bow, before continuing. "Yours?"
>>
>>21464899
"Man of the sun, you say?" Cleode says, clearly unimpressed. "You are one of /them/, yes. A priest?"
>>
>>21464899
Loed eyes Alvaro warily for a long moment. "...I don't know for sure, but it did when we passed by at the very least." He says finally, lowering his sword. "I am Loed Reorsted." He takes the time to introduce everyone. He doesn't even look too oddly at Cleode.

"Now, we'd likely best press on. I wish to see what lies through the door opposite this one. Will you join us, Alvaro? It would good to have an-" He cuts himself off to glance at Cleode. "...A good cleric." He finishes.
>>
>>21464926
"That I am, yes. A crusader of faith, channel of divine will, man of the cloth, however you wish to say it. I was told that this is a dark place in need of the light, I'm not too late for that, am I? I would of hated to make the trip all the way here for nothing."
>>
>>21464964
"Would be a pleasure, would of dreaded to try and attempt this by myself. You have my services for as long as we combat the darkness that hides from the sun." Alvaro replied with a smile.
>>
So, go through the opposite door?

>>
>>21465226
Yep. The skeletons all turn and flee.
Advancing into the kitchens, you see they're about 70 feet long, with a ten foot leg north out at the west end. In the southwest corner are two large cooking pots, their bases in firepits full of ashes. At the end of the leg jutting north is a door, left open by the fleeing skeletons.
>>
Leod and Krago charge and... Are left with no targets. Leod grunts, eyeing the door and looking into the cooking pots on the off chance there were valuables in them.
>>

There's nothing visible in the pots but lumps of rancid and mouldy grease.

Looking out the door north, you see there's a 20 foot wide passage. It continues for about 40 feet, but then the west side juts out 10 feet.

"Hah! They flee like shadows." Alvaro happily watched the skeletons flee from him. "Sorry Cleode, you can get the next batch. Was itching to lessen the dark."

>>21465305
"N-no matter. Either way, that is the second batch of enemies we've let escape. We should be careful to watch our backs as we continue forward."
>>

You find nothing of value.

You could go out the door at the northwest end of the kitchens and follow the path foreward, or go back the way you came and go down one of the corridors
>>
"We'll hunt down whatever monsters may hide in here in due time, do not fear." Leod says, moving to press on. While the hobgoblins may have fled, they were severely weakened. The skeletons on the other hand had fled at full strength and were in his viewpoint far more dangerous.
>>
>>21465407
"Oh, it is? We mustn't let any stone go unturned in finding them, lest they repopulate like the vermin they are. I say we continue on, until we find and smash those who we've let go." Alvaro voiced his opinion to the group with fervor.
