You are Anon, a street fighter training for the final rounds of the World Warrior tournament. You've been hard at work preparing for the next match, which in this case means being beaten half to death by a nun.

>previous threads here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Street%20Fighter

You throw another kick at the nun's ribs, hoping for the best. With speed that seems ridiculous she grabs your leg in midair and twists it like she's wringing out a towel. You cry out in pain as you fall to the floor.

"No good," Belle says. She and Ellie are standing at the sidelines of the dojo. "You've been practicing with Moira for a week now and you're not any closer to breaking through her defense."

Laying on your back, staring up at the ceiling, you decide that it might be time to try a new tack.

>Ask if Moira will train us in the ways of Evil Aikido
>Try to induce another vision of our spirit guide Segata Sanshiro.
>Double down on the striking training, develop the strength and power to simply crush through any guard.

Can we work on feinting instead? The best way to mess up a counter fighter is to screw up their timing, via screwing up our timing.

I support this. Pic mildly related, the second kick is usually called a brazilian kick, and yes people do that, though it's mildly exagerated in the gif. A kick that starts at mid-height but then strikes the head is a nasty weapon, and a really good tool for mindgames.

"Maybe I could learn to improve my feinting?" you ask. "I'm harder to counter if I'm harder to read, right?"

"In theory," Moira says. The young nun in training leans over to see you while she speaks. "You and Ellie have a similar problem with relying on powerful single strikes and committing heavily to them. If you work in some feints and work on some lighter, faster strikes, you might do better."

"Thanks," you say. "Who do we know that could help me work on that?"

"'I'm a pure counterfighter. Sorry." Moira shrugs.

"Dad and I aren't really great at that," Ellie says. You remember the fight with Tatsuya on the train back to Southtown. The man hit like a freight train, but all the strikes were direct and powerful.

"Belle?" you ask.

"Sure, we can work a bit on that," she says. "It's not, like, a specialty or anything, but I'm sure we can think of some drills or something." She offers you a hand to get you back to your feet.

You are Ellie, Kyokugen fighter. As a way to let your team get some more practice you've agreed to let them use Anon as a training dummy. For all of Belle and Moira's time battling Anon you have yet to square off against him, though. The circumstances aren't right just yet.

While Belle helps the dope to his feet your phone buzzes in your jacket. Your striker for your next KoF match, Missy Sue, is calling.

"Hello?" you say.

"Hi, Ellie? I've got some bad news," she says. "I'm going to be out of town this weekend, we're having sort of a family crisis with my grandfather."

"It's alright," you say. "You do what you need to, we'll still be here when you get back. I hope things work out for the best."

"Thanks - sorry, my flight's about to board!" she says. You can hear an announcement in the background as she yells "Goodbye!" and hangs up.

Well. That leaves you down a striker with your inaugural King of Fighters match tonight. Luckily it's not like you have a shortage of strong fighters at your fingertips.

>Ask Anon
>Ask dad
>Ask Belle and Moira who they want to choose

You seem to be roughly tied between dad and Anon. You decide to rely on democracy for this one.

"Anon, give us a minute," you say. He nods and leaves the dojo. "Alright, we need a striker, looks like Missy Sue is out of town. I figure either my dad or Anon could fill the role."

"Your father is monstrously strong," Moira says. "There's benefit to that."

"He's also relatively slow on his feet. The entire point of a striker is that he moves in, gets to attack for a moment and then has to move back out," she says. "I think Anon would be better for speed. He could use the practice, too."

"Urgh. Alright, you two rock-paper-scissors for it," you say. "Right now. Chop chop."

You are Billy Honda. For awhile you went by the moniker Boss Honda in your street fighting days, putting down challengers with the power of sumo. After you went to a bad place in your life you became a karate hobo, traveling the land to learn the secrets of chi. You succumbed to the darkness and lost your mentor, becoming the Satsui no Honda for a brief time. After turning your back on that dark power you chose to enter the eternal battleground that is Idaho, hoping to find your mentor. Then a dragon kidnapped Karate Joe the Fighting Hobo.

Idaho's a weird place.

"You have no business here, outlander," the goblin says. It's about four feet tall, green, kinda...goblin-y looking? Everything in Idaho seems to be based on some sort of videogame cliche.

"I just need to cross this bridge," you explain. You were separated from your party cleric days ago. Signs indicate she's still questing in the direction of Joe, hopefully if you keep on a straight line to your goal you'll meet her again.

"Denied! A thousand times denied!" he screeches through his pointy little teeth. "You knights in your shining armor think you can just push us around? Let us eat your horse and maybe you can make it across on foot." The other goblins laugh.

"This steed is my truest companion in this land. I would sooner abandon my right arm than he," you say.

"Fine, give us your right arm," the goblin says. He smiles a razor-toothed smile.

You dismount from the horse.

"Yessss," the goblin hisses. "We feast tonight."

"You NPCs really don't understand how this world works," you say. "You're not real. You're basically a game that's gone out of control, an enormous amount of chi meeting a swirling madness of delusion to create tulpas. You're only as dangerous as we think you are, you only respond the way we fear you will respond."

"...you lost me," he goblin says. "Just give us the horse and spout your nonsense elsewhere, squire."

"Like I said, the subconscious of everyone inside Idaho gives you form," you repeat. "If you have power, it is because the men you face have fear."

You crack your knuckles.

"As for me, I do not fear you. And if I'm creating the rules we battle the way I wish."

You point to a goblin holding a - lute? Mandolin? Some sort of stringed thing.

The goblin playing the lute is openly terrified as he begins singing Ms New Booty. "BOOTY BOOTY BOOTY BOOTY ROCKIN' EVERYWHERE, ROCKIN' EVERYWHERE," he shouts.

"You came to the wrong neighborhood, motherfucker," the goblin says. He begins breaking, building speed until he's doing that awesome thing where he spins on his head.

You are Anon, street fighter. The kickboxer Belle is running you through a series of training exercises designed to try getting past a counterfighter. There are mixed results so far.

"We're lucky that you learned a roundhouse kick this particular way," she said. "You keep the knee bent and straighten the leg just at the point of impact. Like this, see?" she says, demonstrating the way she's been teaching you to kick all week.

"Is there another way?" you ask.

"Some schools do it differently," she says. "Most notably Muay Thai, where the leg is held stiff and more of the power comes from the core and the hip. Like so," she says, demonstrating again. "That's not what you want, though. You want to reach a point where when you throw it you have choices for where the kick lands even while you're halfway to hitting someone."

"...I'm not sure I get it," you say.

"Look, just try to block me when I kick," she says.

For the next four or five minutes she demonstrates first-hand what she means. Every kick comes to about the same point halfway in, then changes direction ever so slightly to bypass your guard. You block high and it redirects to your knee. You block low and it alters course up to your face.

"I think you get the general idea," she says. "How about you try it for a bit. I'll block."

You're clumsy with it, but the motion starts to grow a little more natural. It's not your most powerful strike - possibly it's your weakest - but it may be enough to beat Moira.

Also, practice feinting with our sticks. Most traditional escrima warns against dancing around and doing anything fancy. We're very quick with our sticks and can do massive damage in a short amount of time, but it helps to keep the opponent guessing.
>>

I remember that one! That was actually my first introduction to the King of Fighters series. Surprisingly good for a GBA fighting game.
>>
>>21446393
The striker stuff came up during the NESTS Saga, when they expanded teams to four members. At least one person on your team can serve as a "striker." A striker basically does a pro-wrestling-style run-in and smacks the opponent around a little. It's mostly to prolong combos or keep the opponent busy. You are a pocket attacker.

I remember them too. The King of Fighters EX series. They're in a separate continuity almost altogether, but they generally exist in a parallel dimension to KOF 2000 (you can tell in the music and presentation). In EX2, the bulk of the story is that some corporate type named Gustav Munchausen wants to take over the world. The final boss of the game is Shiro, a young boy forced to be the vessel for the reincarnation of Goenitz.

"So how come you haven't shown Ellie this move?" you ask.

"I've shown it to her, she just isn't that well suited to it," Belle says. "Pick your knee up, you're slacking. Her main asset is her ridiculous speed, ninety nine times out of a hundred she'll land every hit she needs before her opponent gets a chance to block."

"Why's she still having so much trouble against Moira?" you ask.

"First, she holds back a bit when she fights her. She's stubborn, not dumb, she doesn't want to injure Moira in a training match. Second, Moira really is just that good. If it came down to the two of them in an all-out fight I don't know who would win."

"Huh. Guess I hadn't considered that," you say. "Anyway. Got any tips for this striker thing?"

"Pretty standard," she says. "When one of us yells Striker you can enter the ring for five seconds, then you've gotta get out. We can only call you three times in the current ruleset."

"So if someone calls me a fourth time-"

"You don't go in the ring. No matter what." She ducks under one of your kicks. "You're telegraphing too much. You've gotta sharpen up your movements."

"Fine, fine," you say, concentrating. Faster, cleaner strikes. "You nervous about tonight?"

This actually freezes her a little. "Wai-ait, who told you..I mean, how do you know about toni..."

"The match?" you ask.

"Oh. Oh! Nah, I'm actually kinda looking forward to it," she says, nervously laughing a little. "Gonna kick some dudes, all that. Gonna be a great time."

Their egos bruise easier than their bodies do.

I'm not writing out an extensive character motivation or anything, I just have a vague idea or two about how she'd act.
>Here it comes
She's the cheerful type. Probably too cheerful, considering that she spends a lot of time injuring people for cash, but everyone enjoys different things, and she really likes fighting. She's also pretty damn good at it, but a bit easily distracted when it comes to learning new things; every time she sees some new fighter doing something impressive, she'll take off on a cross-globe trip to find someone to train her so she can do whatever awesome thing she saw. She hardly ever actually finishes training before something else catches her eye, though, and the officials probably get a new list of special moves for her every other fight. That amounts to her having a lot of bizarre options that you'd never expect from someone using her style, but she's not a master of anything outside her basics. When it comes to Muay Thai, though, she can seriously fuck you up, so it balances out well for her.

I should mention that Missy Sue (obviously) looked up to Shermie when she was popular, but after the '97 tournament, well, we'll say she was a little shaken. Hmm. Well, I rolled this, I should write a blurb at least.

A backwoods country girl who moved to the city with her parents when she was 8, now in her teens. Her father taught her to whittle when she was tiny, and now knives, claws, and death feathers (specially weighed throwing knives) are her best friends. Right now she's just fighting to make a little money on the side, so she doesn't like taking much punishment. Fortunately, she's fast enough to dodge and weave most of the karate hobos and other low-grade KoF members she's met, but even she knows that won't last forever. Surprisingly smart for someone born in the mountains, and likes to collect baseball caps.

You are Anon, street fighter, World Warrior and all around tough guy. Tonight your job is to leap into the ring at the beck and call of your friends and go apeshit for five seconds. You'd describe it in a classier way if they ask you to, though.

"Alright, everyone ready?" Ellie asks. She's outfitted in the Skull Fighter gear again, sans helmet.

"Sure," Belle says. She's dressed in a way that vaguely makes you think of an 80s punk singer, but still leaves her able to fight with her dignity. It's a pretty nice ensemble, all things considered.

"Tonight we seek victory by His will," Moira says, eyes closed and hands steepled in prayer. Her uniform seems to be the top half of a nun's habit combined with black hakama from an Evil Aikido dojo.

"I'll do my best," you say.

"Win or lose, I'm proud we've come this far," Ellie says. "I'm proud to call you all my friends."

The spotlights snap on and the announcer takes the stage. It's time to get to work.

"It looks like we're up against a gentleman boxer up first, some sort of pale guy in a lot of makeup second, and a little girl with tons of weapons batting cleanup," Ellie says. "What's our team order here going to be?"

I have a habit of putting my strongest character as the team anchor (last). Belle will zone them out and set the pace of the fight, forcing the other team to play to her tempo. If they overpower her and try to set their pace, send in Moira to stop them cold in their tracks. If it comes to it, Ellie plays clean-up and rushes down whoever is left.

As counter-picks, yeah, that team setup makes sense. We got lucky that we were able to tell the opposing team's makeup before the match started. In that case, this team will work.
Moira will be on point and counter the boxer's striking, which should be the only thing he really has. I'm not sure what to expect from the Necro knockoff, but Ellie should have good answers for him if it comes to it. As for the weapons girl, Belle should be able to zone her out with her Love Taps; it'll be dangerous to get inside on her.

"You're up, Moira. Counter the shit out of him, I'll step in with like infinity punches, then we'll have Belle to clean up against the weapons girl."

"Waaaaait, I have to fight the girl with all the knives?" Belle asks, her face draining of color.

"I'll do my best," you say. You close your eyes and finish a quick Hail Mary before you enter the ring.

"In this corner, representing Infinity Punches from Southtown, Moira!" the announcer yells. It seems nobody was there to supervise Ellie writing in the team name. You'll have to make Belle watch her next time.

"And in this corner, the Count of Monte Fisto, the Fountain of Fisticuffs, the Baron of Boxing, Sammy L!"

The crowd goes wild. This will be interesting. A well-dressed man enters the ring, fists up in a classic boxer's pose.

Sammy starts the fight with a few light jabs that you deflect and ignore, waiting for that critical moment when he overcommits. You don't have to wait long before he throws a right straight that would knock a hole through a brick wall.

Luckily you're tougher than that. Gently, so gently it's ridiculous, you step to the side and take his wrist.

Then you armbar the shit out of that elbow.

>roll 2d10 for effectiveness

would be hilarious. But he has to take the turban off. That'd be ludicrous and yes I know that "ludicrous" doesn't really mean much after the last few Honda Quests, but if Belle mentioned that fighting in a tux was restricting, then this guy shouldn't do MMA while wearing a beach ball covered in cloth on top of his head.

Aikido has the Heaven to Earth throw, which I'm pretty sure Geese does as his low counter in CvS. It's not commonly practiced and for good reason, because even under controlled conditions, that throw HURTS. You basically catch them, lift them up in the air and spike them into the ground back first.
>>
Yeah. I think the one fighter that I submitted (other then the damn owl), I think I'm going to write somethin' up for her and try again tomorrow.

Anyway...

I believe it is also to test just how much the dice hate us. If we start getting multiple 20s when we roll low, well...our ass better call somebody 'cause that ain't normal
>>
Rolled 11

>>21450663
The more extreme the target number is from the median of 10, the easier the counter is implied to be since you can see it coming and guess correctly. Of course, the dice can always beat the odds, and that's fluffed as Moira just plain guessing wrong or someone doing a funky weird attack that loops around her counter.
>>

The lanky pale man tries some sort of move out of a bad kung fu movie. A slow strike, overhead, more of a chopping motion than an actual strike? It reminds you of someone doing a really bad impression of Hung Gar kung fu.

You step in, loop an arm over the top of his and just add your own force to his momentum. His arm comes down hard, elbow first, on your shoulder.

You think you hear something snap.

"Amazing, ladies and gentlemen," the announcer shouts, trying to drown out the sound of the screaming pale guy being taken out of the arena. "Wow, what a battle! We're already to the last fighter on the opposing team and Infinity Punches have hardly taken any hits! We...we sure wish we'd scheduled another match. Would've if we'd known how fast this was gonna go. Aaaaand nooooooow, Sheeeeeeba!"

A teenage girl enters the arena. The one with all the knives, apparently. You watch her carefully, trying to figure out where she's hiding them. Unfortunately you stop noticing what's going on elsewhere in the arena.

"STRIKER!" she shouts, pointing at your face.

>roll 1d20 for bird defense!

Tenchi Nage? You forgot the best part! You catch them with a palm strike below the chin, and twist the entire arm along with your hips to apply pressure to their vertebrae as your bring them down.

That's Moira's counter system. This is just a flat d20 roll.

You panic for a moment. The owl is wearing, like, a little outfit? All you can think of are its little claws.

"STRIKER!" you yell, panicking.

Anon vaults the rope in one smooth motion, the sticks in his other hand. He launches a Gentleman's Reply almost faster than the eye can see, launching the owl back to Sheba.

"Aaaah! Owl!" she yells. "Striker striker striker striker!"

"That's too many..." Anon starts to say. Then another pair of owls in little cowboy outfits swarm in.

"I...you..." You freeze. Anon manages to bat one of them away, then shoots you a look and runs for the rope. Time limit's up.

You take an owl to the face. Then problems start.
>>
>>21451242

>be Belle

You stand by the side of the arena, watching Anon slide under the rope to get out of the ring in time. Moira is batting at an owl, forcing it away from her face. She doesn't notice Sheba coming at her from the other side holding a blackjack.

"Aaaaand Moira is down!" the announcer says. Ellie and Anon are entering the arena and carrying Moira out, trying to bring her back to consciousness. "And now for the Belle of the ball, Southtown's own kickboxing champ Belle!"

You remind yourself to find this announcer and kick his head in later. You enter the ring.

We have to see if our Love Tap is better at pressure than her knives. Getting into melee against a knife expert is just begging for trouble. At least when she throws them, we can see them coming.

I have something to say. Getting close in order to not let her use her knives is silly. We'd be rushing at the goddamn things. Even if she's great at throwing them, a thrown knife will NEVER be as handy and deadly as one the fighter's holding. We'd basically be in a hurry to get stabbed.
>>
>>21451515

"Maybe try asking me a little more ominously," you say. "Of course I'll help. What's up?"

"Perfect! I'll explain the reason later," she says, grabbing your elbow and pulling you back to the side of the stage. Moira has started to come around. Ellie's actually smiling for a change. Proper beaming smile. "Anyway, I got the idea from a Jens Lekman song, so if you get mad it should be at him. And this is all pretend, don't get any ideas."

"Wait, from what?" you ask. You notice a middle-aged man standing beside Tatsuya. Some frowning redhaired guy. You suddenly have a sinking feeling in your stomach.

"Hi dad," she says. "This is my fiance Anon."

Please, SFM isn't such a shitty writer. He'll give us choices. Also, pretending to be fiances has been a staple of drama animus for years, it won't change a damn thing.

This isn't to say 'I'm waifuing and you can't stop me', this is just me correcting you on a point I feel you're mistaken about.

Don't forget Pete. Far as we know, he still has the hots for Belle. So that's basically everyone but Belle likely trying to kill us now.

Unless we avoid the stupid misunderstanding between friends that can be cleared in exactly 2 minutes of talking. Kinda hope we do that. Silly MISUNDERSTANDINGS have come be grating.
