Each Incubator has their own method of establishing a contract, each with his own unique twist to the process.

Some choose to approach their prospect through a dream, passing themselves off as an otherwordly being prone to fits of supreme generosity.

Others choose to follow the media's contemporary portrayal of fictional magical girls, acting like the ridiculous chirping blobs of fur that defecate sugary treats and gemstones(these Incubators you have long since chosen to cut yourself off from, and despite their attempts to reestablish contact, you have considered them dead to you).

A few - thankfully - choose to play up the Faustian Deal pastiche to the hilt, promising disenfranchised young women the justice - the power - that they deserve in order to take revenge on whoever they believe wronged them, in exchange for their souls. This was the approach you'd started out with, and for a while you thought it was a convenient way of going about things.

After all, there was nothing like making it known to the prospect that everything was downhill from then on - that they would have one last chance to do something significant with their pointless, worthless lives. You offered them a beautiful, meaningful death, instead of the slow, ignoble decay that they were currently on.
100% chance of establishing a contract, sure, and you didn't much mind that their life expectancies never went on longer than a week or so before they expired. As long as they gave the output you expected, you thought little else of them other than expendable. Walking biological wreckage.

That all changed when you established a contract with Mami Tomoe.

If you knew how to laugh at all, you probably would have.

It's with this in mind that you approach the young woman - the child - in her pajamas named Yuma Chitose, who is sitting on the freshly-trimmed grass near the duck pond. The girl watching the ducks with rapt attention, having long since run out of bread crusts to feed the beastly things.

Kyoko is still on the bench, but you know she's keeping watch. If you need her to help you with your pitch, you only needed to look towards her and she would come running.

Yuma Chitose, as it is, doesn't seem to be aware of your presence just yet. Even though you're practically a few feet away from her.

You decide to take a different tack with your approach, at least in Yuma's case. She is young, younger than your typical prospect, at the impressionable age where a talking cat would be considered as more of a curiosity rather than a strange abberation of nature (or a horrifying hallucination). Certainly a bit easier to deal with than skeptical teenagers still on the cusp of puberty, but at the same time a bit more difficult to explain and impress the gravity of the situation to.

Well, you'll cross that bridge when you get to it. Right now, you're not completely sure if what she really needs is a contract, or just a place to stay, which you can probably provide.

You move directly in front of the girl, making sure your movements are slow, deliberate, relaxed. She makes a small, surprised noise at your appearance, one that she makes again as you sit down on your haunches as you look up at her, both your front feet placed firmly on the ground in front of you. Your tail flicking from side to side - and it's with a faint pulse of amusement that you notice her wide, green eyes follow its movement.

Humans can be so predictable sometimes.

"...You're a strange cat," She says after a moment, her brow furrowing at your appearance. "I've always seen cats around here, but...I've never seen one with ears like yours. Or a tail that...that poofy." It's without hesitation that she reaches out with a bandaged hand, and you allow the brief physical contact between her palm and the top of your head to take place. To her credit, she pets you carefully, gently, as if worried that she'd inadvertently hurt you. "You don't seem to have a collar, too...I wonder what you're called?"

The first contact between an Incubator and his prospect is always a delicate thing. No matter the Incubator's approach, it must be approached with tact, subtlety, and the knowledge that humans aren't exactly used to life forms resembling their local fauna exhibiting unnatural behavior such as sentience. "Incubatus Nobilis," are the first two words you pulsed directly into her mind, a pulse that her mind would interpret as something she'd heard in a voice especially tailored to sound trustworthy, innocent, pure. "Incubator in your language. But if you're trying to obliquely ask me to introduce myself, then my name is Kyuubey, Yuma Chitose."

A full minute of her looking at you in utter shock passes, her green eyes wide at you. She does not even notice one of the ducks waddling out of the pond and blundering past her, honking all the while. Despicable creature.

"You...you can talk?" The girl murmurs in surprise, in wonder. To her credit, she continues to pet you, as if trying to affirm your existence, as if this simple act had made it doubtful, a thing of suspicion. "And you...your name is Kyuubey?"

"Correct." You close one eye briefly as her hand gets a bit too close, but you do not angle or cant your head away. She's doing a good job of petting you so far.

"Kyuubey..." She murmurs your name, a small smile on her face, before she blinks again. "W-wait, how did you know my name?"

"I was told of it. A friend of yours brought you to my attention." You jerk your head slightly towards Kyoko's direction, and Yuma turns to glance at her. Your subordinate gives the prospect a smile and a wave.

Confusion muddles Yuma's expression, silence muffling the obvious questions she looks mere moments away from asking. It takes her a moment to finally spit one out, and it's the question that's rarely asked, and yet the most important. You find yourself impressed with her, and that is even rarer.

"Why me?"

Other prospects would not have bothered with such questions. They would have either jumped at your offer or simply asked for your terms. Never an explanation as to why.

When you answer, it's with frank honesty. Children, at the very least, appreciate such. They are still far too young to develop a sense of guile and mistrust so common among their older kin. They at least realize how important it is, beyond simple posturing and other bothersome contrivancies.

You tell her why. You tell her about what you know of her, about what Kyoko had told you about her, and what you think of her situation - as pitiful as it is. You have at least the decency not to bring light to her wounds, focusing instead on how difficult it must be to live in such a household. You tell her about how Kyoko wants her to be somewhere safer, while making it clear that your subordinate did not plead with you to make her a Magical Girl. That lie, at least, is something you feel comfortable with making.

By the time you've finished, her eyes are glistening with tears.

Ah. Finally something you can respond to. You nod. "Mostly like that. You become one when you establish a contract with me - a contract of agreement between the both of us." You allow her to look confused once more. "If you agree to work for me as a Magical Girl, then I will grant you one wish. One single wish, and it can be anything in the world that you want." You tilt your head slightly to look at her. "Normally I'd say something about certain disclaimers regarding that wish, but as long as you keep it reasonable and not try to ask for something smart like more wishes, I can grant it."

It's here that her expression brightens, just like any other girl's would have at the mention of the wish. You do not begrudge her of this - in fact, it's a sign that things are going well.

"Anything I want...?" She turns back to Kyoko, who seems to flinch and nearly drop her smartphone onto the cold, hard pavement of the park's jogging track.

"Anything."

Yuma turns back to you, indecision and contemplation warring slightly across her features. When she speaks again, her voice is low, barely above a whisper.

"What...what did Kyoko-neesan wish for? Can...can I ask?"

You try to ignore that bit, but somehow it stings a bit more than it should. You will yourself not to show it, however.

"What if I don't want to be a Magical Girl?" Yuma finally asks after a few moments, her voice carrying the tone of curiosity. Again, a good sign. It doesn't seem like she's against the idea of accepting the contract, just exploring her options. "The wish is nice and all, but...fighting monsters and stuff, isn't that dangerous?"

"It is dangerous, yes," You nod. "But being a Magical Girl, you will be fully equipped and trained to deal with the situation. Unlike the Magical Girls you see in anime, we do not send you into battle unprepared and without an idea of what to do. By the time you're in active duty, you'll be confident enough in your abilities that any danger will be manageable to a degree."

You gesture with an ear towards Kyoko. "Depending on your wish, Kyoko might be the one teaching you how to fight as a Magical Girl, and she's one of the best."

We tell her that there is no reason to resort to violence since all it would take is a call to the child services. It's not going to be hard to convince them that they were abusing her since Yuma's hands are covered in bandages.

That gets a smile from Yuma. "Mama...she likes to lie about the reason why Papa beats me," She says, taking one of your ears gently and brushing her fingers against the golden hoop it's threaded through. "I learned what a liar looks like. What a liar sounds like." She looks at you. "You're not a liar. And Kyoko-neesan isn't, too. I don't like being lied to."

That's...good. It's lucky that you chose to be honest, then.

"I don't want either of them to die, though." She says after a moment's silence. "Mama and Papa, they...they love each other very much. Even I can tell that. More silence. She doesn't seem to be saying no, but it's better if you fill the quiet. "I would ask of you to keep in mind that this is something that you do not walk away from, Yuma Chitose. There is no way to cancel a contract. If it is established, it is established permanently. Nothing, bar the Magical Girl's death, can break this agreement. So decide carefully."

It's than that you try to lighten the situation. "Do not worry about hurting my feelings by refusing the contract. It is taboo for us to force an unwilling girl into an agreement." You shake your head, being reminded of simpler, messier times.

"That's just bad for everyone involved, really. Better to make things clear-cut. If you have any misgivings or anything of the sort, do not hesitate to say no."

Yuma nods, and when she replies, even Kyoko looks up to listen.

"I'll do it, Kyuubey-san." Her words firm, her eyes hard. She pulls herself up to her feet. "I want to be a Magical Girl. I...accept your contract."

"I know. I know there's a lot more I need to learn, Kyoko-neesan." Yuma cuts your subordinate off. "But...this way, Mama and Papa can love each other without me around, right? And I can help Kyoko-neesan, at least!"

"..." Kyoko frowns at this, glaring at you. You didn't even need to probe her thoughts - the look itself asked you, in rather colorful language typical of the redhead, about what sort of nonsense you filled the girl's brains in. You would have shrugged if you could.

"I don't really need help, Yuma-chan." Kyoko tries to work up a smile. "L-look, let me just talk to your Papa, okay? I can straighten things out. You don't have to be a Magical Girl for that..."

Yuma shakes her head, pouting. "I want to help!"

Kyoko lets out a sigh, before turning to you and nodding. Despite the fact that she'd jus tried to dissuade your prospect, she flashes you a small smile and a thumbs up, as if pleased with herself in a rather weary, resigned way.

Perhaps she changed her mind suddenly, deciding against having Yuma turned into a Magical Girl. Or maybe she just wanted to make sure that Yuma had someone to help her decide, someone who would help them say no when they were afraid to. Something you remember that Kyoko didn't really have - in fact, her contract was the quickest one you'd ever established. She jumped on the chance, no hesitation whatsoever.

"Alright. Guess I can't say anything else, then." Your subordinate ruffles Yuma's hair, eliciting a squeak from your prospect. "Go on. Make your wish. Become a Magical Girl. Kyuubey's waiting."

Yuma nods, and steps forward. Facing you down, maintaining eye contact with you.

"I'm ready, Kyuubey-san." She says, slightly out of breath. "I want to do it. I want to make a Wish. I want to be a Magical Girl."

Success.

"Very well, then." You give her a slow nod, and ever so gently, you reach up towards her with your ears - the tips brushing against the center of her chest. Briefly making contact where her Soul Gem, once manifested, should be coaxed out of.

"What wish shall your Soul Gem shine brightly with, Yuma Chitose?"

She murmurs her wish. It is a simple one. A childish one. But not an easy one, not by any standard.

But you are the Ninth Incubator, and this is not Amateur Hour.

Her wish is granted and her Soul Gem - glowing a brilliant emerald green - is perfectly formed even before she could crumple to the ground, rendered unconscious by the pain. Kyoko proves quick enough to catch her, at least.

Perhaps...perhaps now would be a good time to do so, you note. At least the grass is comfortable. Maybe an hour or two would be enough.

"...If you say so. I'll, uh, bring Yuma back to headquarters then, yeah?" Kyoko nods towards the sleeping girl in her arms. "Have her sleep off the effects and everything. Er, what's her rank, anyway?"

You open one eye to look up at Kyoko Sakura, inwardly debating if you should tell her - before letting out a sigh. She might as well know.

"Culexus," You say. "Rank Culexus. You're right, she does have potential."

"Whoa, a Culexus?" Kyoko blinks, grinning. "Wow. I guess that's cool, but..." she frowns. "H-hey, does that mean she'll have to wear that skull suit thing every day?"

There's probably also diminishing returns if you just contract a girl only for her to Witch out. It takes more energy to create a Magical Girl than the energy received from a Grief Seed.

I think that witches in this setting are a lot more powerful that the ones in the series. Remember how in the Mami flashback that the witch Charlotte had multiple cake snake bodies in her barrier? That might mean that they give more grief seeds when they die.

Now that we are on the subject of witches, Charlotte really was the only one we ever saw in this setting right? And we never saw how she died because Mami and Sayaka decided to escape. Makes me wonder if info surrounding witches is something that Deculture is actively trying to hide from us.
