(Previous threads: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Ogre%20Civilization%20Quest)

"... thank you ever so kindly for reading this copy of 'A Second Look at Terra Incognita'! Perhaps you purchased this treatise from a normal bookstore, or are reading the free chapter included in 'Wizards Monthly: We May Have No Sense Of Right Or Wrong, But At Least We're Well-Read' (WM: WMHNSOROWBALWWR, for short). Or perhaps you filched this from your local bookstore, in which case this book will alert the nearest authorities and then proceed to self-destruct in approximately thirty seconds."

"In any case, as you are probably well aware, the prevailing view regarding the inhabitants of Terra Incognita (far to the west, away from any of us 'civilized' races) is that they are all savage, barely-sentient beast-men who have adapted to their homelands' inhospitable climes. Scholars of all races have dismissed these 'savages' as being of little relevance to any king's (or government's) policy considerations- or, indeed, little threat to anyone but themselves."

"I fear that this dismissal of Terra Incognita's civilizations is far too rash. One only has to look at our many failed attempts at taming, settling, or simply exploring that terrifying 'new world.' While there is little danger of those bestial races coming here, the question must be asked: why are the 'savage beast-men' so adept at repelling our explorers?"

"One reason for this, I feel, is that the 'beast-men' are just like us in many ways: they have their own cultures, their own feuds, and their own bloody histories."

"And perhaps they too have their own prophecies, their own saviors and destroyers, and their own dark secrets that are best left forgotten..."

>Still most of the way through a turn...

Neither the ogres nor the elves had anything to say after fighting those strange, insectoid invaders' boss. Grim-faced, the elves simply posted more sentries in the underground spaces beneath Daphnaia, recovered the bodies of their fallen comrades, and began their work to seal up the breaches. For their part, the ogres seemed to pick up on the mood and stood around silently, awkwardly scratching at their wounds- though when Boss Bawss Fistboss, his expression thunderous at the loss of ogre life, silently started helping the elves, the others quickly pitched in.

... an hour or so later, the dark mood evaporates nearly as quickly as it came when the mixed group heads back above ground, due entirely to the gigantic floating/flying oasis golem that comes looming in over the horizon.

"Not bad. Da boys made good time," Boss Bawss rumbles, shading his eyes against the sun.

"What," Celicia deadpans, staring up at Ogir Place, which slowly and methodically flaps its arms as it approaches.

"Hey! Boss! Booooss!" Beastkrumpa Squiggles yells, waving from his spot on the staircase set underneath the flying oasis. "We're here! Think dat girl elf will believe dat we can totally help 'em out now?"

"What," the female elf in question repeats.

"Think so," Boss replies easily, before turning to Celicia. "So wot do you want us to do with your Daffy tree? I mean, it IS big 'nuff to be a hat, right?"

"What," Celicia repeats, still staring up at the island with slightly glazed eyes.

Boss Bawss Fistboss rubs his chin. Well, seems like she won't be putting up that many protests soon- and the elves ARE the ogres' allies, pretty much, so they'll probably accompany the ogres on adventures and/or help them out if asked.

What to do with the elves' giant world tree, now...

[ ] Leave Daphnaia where it is, and just keep Ogir Place hovering above/around it for refueling every now and then.
[ ] Leave Daphnaia where it is, and give 'em an Aquifer Pebble (Instant Water, Just Add Water) to solve all their survivability problems and then some.
[ ] Plant Daphnaia on top of Ogir Place. Bring the elves with us, bring ALL the elves with us!
[ ] Ask Celicia what the elves would prefer to do.
[ ] Write-in!

What a second...

If we stick the giant Elf tree on top of Ogir Plase, what'll happen to it when to turns into giant golem form? or is it always a giant golem?

Wait, if we do, does that mean we've created a giant flying ent?
>>
>>21378118
I think it'll just be a giant golem with an equally giant tree growing out of its head/shoulders.
>>
>>21378118

Well, Ogir Place basically looks like an upside-down mountain, with the oasis and water-spouting rock formation (and most of the settlement) sitting the flat "top."

The only thing remotely golem-like about it are the arms and legs sticking out of the thing.

>[X] Ask Celicia what the elves would prefer to do.
>[X] ... but we'd totally prefer to plant Daphnaia on top of Ogir Place.

Boss Bawss ain't gonna lie: there's something extremely satisfying about watching Celicia looking awestruck at the fruits of the ogres' labor. However, what he needs right now isn't a basket case, but someone who can tell him how the elves would react to giving Ogir Place a bitchin' new tree.

"Hey." Boss Bawss pokes Celicia's shoulder with a finger nearly as thick as her skinny-ass forearm. "Hey, so us ogres an' you elves, we're all totally best buds now, right?"

"What? ... oh. Well." With an effort, Celicia snaps herself out of it, and she takes a moment to light herself a cigarette before answering his question. Boss notes with interest that her hands are shaking only slightly. "In... In a manner of speaking, I suppose. I mean, I'm only speaking for the elves of Daphnaia, but- fuck, it looks like we have a common enemy..."

"Right! Those non-beetle bug-men, who've been crawlin' up your roots dis whole time. An' you an' your elves weren't bad fighters," Boss Bawss admits grudgingly, "with those bangy sticks of yours-"

"Felpowder rifles," Celicia quickly corrects him.

"... yah, those things. So we could totally swing by every now an' then to give you water an' stuff, but... how's dis for a win-win situation?" Boss Bawss inflates his chest proudly. "How 'bout we take your tree thing, an' move it-"

"On top of Ogir Place?" Celicia takes a slow drag from her cigarette, exhaling the smoke thoughtfully.

Boss shrugs. "Well, only if you guys want to. Me an' da boys, we could always use more help up there."

"... you know, I would not have even /dreamed/ that I would be seriously considering this," she mutters. "But... here we are."

Boss Bawss waits patiently as Celicia mulls this over, and then blinks when the elf soldier speaks up again, her voice quieter than normal. "Promise me that you'll help us get to the bottom of this- this bug-man thing?"

Boss Bawss nods immediately. "Don't gotta ask me twice," he rumbles. "We lost some good boys today 'cause of those bugs, too. An' I'm still gonna talk to da Queen of da Scaratones, don't forget."

"Hm."

It's a few moments more before Celicia pins the larger ogre with a calm orange-eyed gaze. "An alliance of necessity."

Boss blinks. "A wot of a wot?"

"In the unlikely event that the Elven Coalition ever bothers to check up on Daphnaia- its failed experiment- then that's what I'm telling them. An alliance of necessity, brought about by an inhospitable landscape and the appearance of unknown hostile forces." The female elf shrugs. "That's the kind of horseshit that we feed Coalition councilmen all the time, at least."

Celicia then gives Boss Bawss an uncharacteristically toothy grin. "... 'course, the Coalition can keep eating that horseshit. You, me, you, and the rest of us- we'll all know better. Allies?"

She holds out a dainty hand, which is engulfed by Boss Bawss's larger callused hand, and they shake on it.

>The Felpowder Elves Squadron have joined the ogres!
>Daphnaia has treelocated to Ogir Place!

>STATUS REPORT

This week is nothing short of a red-letter week for the ogres. First, they discovered crude iron armor, thus improving their durability in battle (well, in NORMAL battles, anyway, barring terrifying undead drakes and glowing insectoid menaces). Next, the ogres invented Ur-Camouflage, based on the entirely realistic physics of "if you can't see them, they can't see you."

... but that all pales in comparison to the fact that Ogir Place is now home to a giant tree, and also a group of rifle-toting elves who figured that hey, since they aren't ever returning home, why not partner up with the guys who have thus far made this desert their bitch?

Thankfully, it didn't take TOO too much elbow grease to get the elves' giant tree (plus its roots and most of the dirt that came with it)) onto Ogir Place. Between Geomancer Gubbins' magical prowess and the elves' non-combatant support staff (read: the minor druids whose job it is to keep Daphnaia on bare minimum life support), the treelocation went without a hitch.

Of course, it's not easy being Boss Bawss, because he immediately has a few other things to deal with.

First, there's the matter of the flying howling nocturnal things that circle Ogir Place at night. The elves' guns have ensured that they don't stray too close to the settlement, but they're still there, for whatever strange reason. The creatures aren't as big of a threat as they were before, but perhaps they still bear investigating...

Second, the ogres DO need to talk to the Scaratones, about the constant attack on the elves and the strange insectoid creatures accompanying that one beetle-man warrior. At the same time, though... the Scaratones have sent word that they're going to temporarily suspend their trading agreement- traveling overland will be too tricky, over the next week or so. When asked why:

"The sandstorms are coming again."

The beetles are probably busy with the sandstorms, and doing these will give us some more bonding with the elves. Let us see exactly what they can do.

"So wot you're sayin' is," Boss Bawss rumbles, giving the furrowed earth a skeptical look. "Wot you're sayin' is, you can grow things NOT in da underground?"

A scant day after Daphnaia and its inhabitants got settled into Ogir Place, some of the more enterprising elves- those whose families were farmers- began striking the earth around the oasis. Given how happy the elves look (though since elves are elves, such an expression generally defaults to "smug and pleased with themselves"), it seems that they approve.

Celicia, having been among the elves who rolled up their sleeves and pitched in, nods in response, wiping the sweat from her forehead using the back of one slender arm. "Like I said before, we brought a few crops from the old world. Didn't take so well in the desert sands, but this soil?" She hefts a few small cloth bags. "The seeds we brought should grow like weeds."

An elf kneeling next to her grimaces, tossing his hair over one shoulder. "A pity we cannot grow anything before the sandstorm hits, though. Still, this gives us hope for the futur-"

"Nah, we totally got time- here, lemme see that." Boss Bawss swiftly nabs a bag, digs around for a few seeds, and scatters them on the soil.

"- h-hey!" Celicia leaps to her feet, hopping up and down as she tries to retrieve the bag from the much taller ogre's grasp. "Fuck, we only brought a bag for each crop, what the hell-"

Boss Bawss gently pats Celicia's head, putting one finger to his lips and ignoring her death glare. "Shhh," he soothes. "I got dis."

The larger stomps a foot on the ground. Immediately, plants begin sprouting out of the ground, fully forming into slender stalks of wheat and lush potato plants in a matter of seconds.

(Cont.)
>>
>>21379672
The other elf immediately rocks back on his heels, his tortured mind trying to come to grips with such a fragrant breach of reality. To her credit, it only takes Celicia ten seconds to restart her stressed brain. "Well, that's... okay, that's fine and all, but what are we going to do about the sandstorm-"

Boss Bawss stomps his other foot, and the plants immediately withdraw back into the dirt. Another stomp, and the plants pop back out.

... Celicia closes her mouth.

And then everyone ate dinner that night.

Actively searching for more information isn't something that comes easily to ogres, who generally just take things as they come. Still, Boss Bawss is one of the few ogres who has taken that skill and made it his own, and it's served him well so far.

... this still leaves him with a dilemma.

"So... da Scaratones say dat usually just sit underground an' wait out da sandstorms." Boss Bawss sits cross-legged and cross-armed, looking between his advisers- Geomancer Gubbins, Beastkrumpa Squiggles, and Celicia- before his gaze settles on the elf. "An' you say dat it's da same thing for you, except you sit in dat tree."

"Daphnaia's shielded us from the sandstorm before, yes, but the sand will eventually scour it right down twigs," Celicia clarifies. "That's half the reason why we would have died out here. We're being shielded, but Daphnaia isn't."

Boss Bawss scratches his head. "So just sittin' somewhere an' waitin' out da storm..."

"Impossible. Your shanties won't protect you from the storm," Celicia shoots back flatly, lighting up another cigarette- Boss Bawss idly notes that it's at least her sixth one this hour alone. "And Daphnaia will just keep getting hurt."

>[X] Settlement - 62 - Successful!

"Already set most of da boys onto makin' da houses stronger, boss," Gubbins adds, idly tapping his geomancy tome against his knee. And then he leans forward, his eyes glittering. "But... I's got me an idea."

Slowly, quietly, Celicia buries her face in her hands. The other ogres ignore her.

(Cont.)
>>
>>21380304
"Sand is earth, see? An' dat's all geomancy stuff. Maybe I can magic somethin' up to tide us over!"

Squiggles shakes his head. "Nah, hey, how 'bout dis- we just take Ogir Place an' fly OVER da sandstorm. We won't have to touch any magic stuff!"

"... oi, movin' Ogir Place is totally magic," Gubbins shoots back, before stroking his chin thoughtfully. "Tho'... I don't think we ever flew dat high before..."

Boss Bawss looks up into the sky, assuming his thinking pose.

>[X] Magic Shield!

A few hours later, the horizon grows ever darker, and what looks like a half-wall, half-whirlwind of writhing, flesh-flaying sand slowly eats up the distance separating it from Ogir Place.

"Just a preview of what's to come, yes-yes," the Scaratone envoy had told Boss Bawss. "Small, by all standards. Should only last for an hour at most." Small comfort, that.

Most of the ogres are either huddling in their rock shanties or the oasis's underground cave. The elves, on the other hand, have holed themselves up in Daphnaia Tree, as usual. Only Boss Bawss and his colleagues (and Celicia, out of morbid curiosity) are standing on the 'prow' of Ogir Place, watching the sandstorm approach.

"Any time now, Gubbins," Boss Bawss says uneasily, watching the sandstorm approach.

"Relax." Gubbins tucks his tome into a pocket in his rock-potato-snakeskin hat, before rubbing his hands together. "I totally got this." Once more, the geomancer braces himself against the dirt of Ogir Place, his eyes glowing gold as he taps into his mental reserves.

(Cont.)
>>
>>21380921
Quick as a flash, the sandstorm of the Scouring Wastes rushes forward towards Ogir Place, almost as if it can't wait to come to grips with the oasis. Boss Bawss involuntarily takes a step back, while Celicia's hand twitches towards the rifle strapped to her back...

>94 - STUPIDLY SUCCESSFUL!

And the sandstorm stops a foot away from Ogir Place, the airborne sand parting in front of Gubbins' hand and flowing AROUND the oasis, almost as if Ogir Place was surrounded by an invisible force field.

Celicia breathes a quiet sigh of relief, while Boss Bawss whoops and pumps a fist into the air, roaring his defiance to the sandstorm. "AW YUS! Gubbins, you did good! We've got NOTHIN' to fear from the stor- oh fuck me not again," he groans as glowing, gold-colored veins begin bulging along the smaller geomancer's arms and suddenly-grinning face.

Celicia calmly takes in Gubbins' appearance before glancing to Boss Bawss. "... 'again'?"

Boss Bawss barely has time to nod in response before Celicia is off like a shot, running for Daphnaia for its perceived ability to guard against ogre insanity. With a shrug, Boss Bawss turns back to watch Gubbins with nothing more than mild interest, even as the geomancer begins grabbing at the air with a laugh of pure exhilaration.

(Cont.)
>>
>>21380836
WE NEED TO MAKE HER GREAT QUEEN OF BUGS A MIGHTY HEADPIECE!
>>
>>21380924
And the sandstorm begins bulging and swirling in time with Gubbins' hand movements. The smaller ogre laughs shrilly and STOMPS the ground once; immediately, in the cave, the earth swallows Ogir Place's steering wheel and plants it right in front of Gubbins.

"I!"

Nearly bursting with the ambient magic of the desert, which itself has become amplified by the natural fury of the whirling sandstorm, the smaller ogre makes a fist. One of Ogir Place's golem arms does the same, and punches straight into the sandstorm.

"HAVE!"

With a violent jerk of his free hand, Gubbins forces the sandstorm into a funnel, wrassling the whole natural phenomenon right around Ogir Place's right arm. The sandstorm writhes and thrashes like a living beast, almost as if it's resisting the will of Gubbins, who simply cackles some more.

"THE POWEEEEEER!!"

There's an audible SNAP as Gubbins finally succeeds in forcing the sandstorm to his bidding. The howling winds seem to die down, and the skies brighten back up, bereft of whirling sands and tempest-strength winds.

Boss Bawss peers over the edge of the oasis, looking at interest with the still-turning funnel of tamed wind and sand whirling around Ogir Place's rocky fist. "... huh. Dat's a new one," he rumbles, side-eying the smaller ogre. "How'd you-"

(Cont.)
>>
>>21380929
"AND NOW WE TUNNEL TO THE CENTER OF THE PLANET!"

"-- WAT NO."

In the end, Gubbins settled for upending Ogir Place and plopping it inside Ogir Crater for a few hours, causing massive confusion and terror for everyone living in the oasis (and ESPECIALLY for outsiders who stare at the pair of gigantic golem legs sticking out of the desert).

>[X] ... turn Ogir Place upside-down and put it in Ogir Crater: 1 - LUCKY STUPID

>Ogir Place is now completely and utterly sandstorm-proof!
>Ogir Place has gained [SANDSTORM DRILL]!

Can Boss Bawss delegate for extra actions? Or is the Ogre society still fragile to fractionary reactions?

We have Beastmaster... What was his name? Dundy? Grundy? Irwin? With what animal he had domesticated.
Then our first Ogre Mage Gubbins with the apprentice Magi.
And who was Squiggles? That Ogre Guy?
And now Celicia, who has the elves under her own command.

Seems like there is enough to delegate, if they can be trusted without supervision...

Wait, Ogres.

>[X] Tech: 97 - STUPIDLY SUCCESSFUL!

One of the ogres carting freshly-mined Featherstone out of the underground cave turns to peer at the edge of Ogir Place, frowning when something catches his eye. "Hey! Wot're you doin' out there?"

The elf, one of the many gunners under Celicia's command, looks up from where she was balancing on the very edge of Ogir Place, completely ignoring the potential multi-story drop to the distant desert sands below. "What else would I be doing? I'm keeping watch," she retorts, sniffing in distaste at his obtuseness. /Ogres/.

The ogre curses under his breath, tossing another handful of Featherstone into his cart- he bets that Boss Bawss'll totally have his head if their allies hurt themselves or something. /Elves/. "You're gonna fall if you ain't careful, miss," he grumbles back. "An' it's a real long way down, there's no way your thin elf-y bones'll survive da trip," he adds.

"Me? Lose my balance?" The elf laughs, her voice high and melodious- completely unlike that of her crass superior. Just her luck to be stranded on this godforsaken mission at such a young age! "Please. Who do you think you're talking to?"

(Cont.)
>>
>>21381296
She stands up, not even bothering to hold her arms out for balance. "I'm an /elf/, and one trained for decades in the art of war. If I can't balance here, I'll bGYAAAAAAAAAGH-" the elf shrieks as the loosely-packed combination of dirt and sand suddenly gives away under her feet, sending her pitching over the edge.

"I TOLD YOU SO!" the ogre howls, sending his cart tipping over as he lunges after her without a second thought- and flying over the edge himself. Crap, he's got Featherstone in his hands- how's he going to grab her with his hands full? With a growl, the ogre single-handedly crushes the Featherstone, the resulting dust glittering strangely as it spreads through the air-

The falling elf wails as she plummets towards the ground, her panicked flailing only causing her to turn around midair- and she stares at the ogre diving toward her with his arms to his sides and a determined expression on his face, a strange bluish-white corona starting to form around the front of the ogre's body like some sort of atmospheric shield. With another muttered curse, the ogre catches up to the falling elf and bodily slings her into his arms before righting himself in midair, the Featherstone dust corona shifting towards his feet- and miraculously, their descent slows down.

(Cont.)
>>
>>21381308
It's a scant few seconds later that the ogre, carrying the elf bridal-style in his arms, gently and slowly touches down onto the desert sand, both of them completely unharmed.

The ogre looks down at the elf in his arms and blinks as the events of the past few seconds sink in. The elf stares back with wide, green eyes as she tries to process this herself.

"... y'know," the ogre rumbles. "I think I'd better tell da boss about dis."

The elf can do nothing but nod in agreement as the ogre begins the long trek up the staircase connecting Ogir Place to ground level.

>[X] [ELVES] Help them settle in, and see wot they have to offer us!

"... let me tell you something, not much has changed for us," Celicia mutters from her perch atop the ogres' stone storehouse. Her voice is a little hoarse- moreso than usual, given that she'd just finished bawling out the dumb rookie who all but flung herself off the edge.

Boss Bawss, leaning against the side of the building, has long since stopped questioning Celicia's (and the rest of the elves') strange preference for high places. As far as he can tell, they're like cats going up trees, except elves can usually get themselves down again. "Wot do you mean?"

"What I MEAN is, my soldiers just spend most of the day holed up in Daphnaia Tree, just like we did when we were fucking stranded in the middle of the desert," Celicia grouses. "Half of them are okay with our current setup, but a quarter of them won't ever deign to mingle with ogres, and the other quarter thinks you're all waiting to grind our bones into bread and messily devour us all."

Boss Bawss does some quick mental calculations, his lips moving as he thinks. "... CAN you have dat many fourths in a whole?"

There's a soft 'bonk' as Celicia bangs her head against the roof. "... that's not important. What's important is that we make my elves work with your boys, but I can't force them, not on my own. If we're going to make this work, you have to do your part to get us working together. Got it?"

(Cont.)
>>
>>21381588
There's a pause as Boss Bawss thinks for a moment. "... so you want me to help you get da elves to help da ogres? But you're da boss of da elves, right?"

Celicia closes her eyes, massaging the bridge of her nose. "Telling elves to do something they don't want to do is like- like herding cats. If I give them a general order to mingle with ogres, they'll do it only to the extent that I can't bawl them out for disobedience."

The female elf scoots over to peer over the edge of the roof, looking down at Boss Bawss with that deadpan expression of hers. "But if you give me some kind of excuse to give my soldiers a direct /order/ to work with your boys on some project that'll benefit the both of us, get us elves used to having orders come from you too... it'll be a first step."

Boss Bawss ponders this- stretching his brain to consider all of these elven politics really can't be healthy, but SOME ogre's got to do it.

Did we ever actually set up any of those water stones on the island? I don't remember us doing so. I figured any time we needed water we'd just stick one somewhere, but I didn't think we'd set up a specific spot to have constant water from.
>>
>>21381760
Those water stones are FROM the island, at the bottom of the lake. We didn't take all of them either.
>>
>>21381766

Yea I know, that's where the water was originally coming out of the rock from. When Ogir Place started flowing, the water stopped and instead filled up Ogir crater until we took them out. Presumably we've been hanging onto them but I don't recall us ever putting them somewhere permanent that brought back our water supply.
>>
...

Hey, guys, when was the last time we actually failed?
>>
>>21381760
>>21381748
It's been a while since I talked about this, so I'll clarify it here:

Ogir Place already has unlimited water (the oasis with the rock formation that constantly spits water out into the lake/oasis), and it never lost that water. The Aquifer Pebbles themselves were found smack-dab at the bottom of Ogir Crater, once Ogir Place lifted off.

It can be assumed that the oasis is powered by one of these, 1) without being lost when Ogir Place went airborne, and 2) without turning the whole place into a waterlogged hell.

Ask all of the questions in proper ogre fashion and get them mixed up

See if Cecilia can figure out anything from it

Why not just ask them all?

If I had to choose an order for it.

Ask her if she can set her best engineers and Gubbins together to combine Felpowder and Cractus sticks. And maybe some druids. Maybe if the cractus sticks can't explode, they can regrow.

I think you mean THAT OGRE who if we ever get around to naming, I propose Thaddgai.
>>
>>21382214
Yes. That ogre. THe one who has a habit of setting himself on fire and inventing things.
>>
Honestly, I am a bit curious about the old world. Half to know what they are planning and the other half to make a guess of what the 'civilized' world will take of the Ogres here.
My guess: Scholars weeping, lords freaking out, and wizards curled into balls at the thought of Ogres being their equals.

>[X] ALL THE QUESTIONS

Celicia swings down off the storehouse and waits patiently while Boss Bawss gets his thoughts in order. They haven't had many opportunities to just sit down like this and shoot the breeze, after all, and there ARE quite a few things that the larger ogre feels that he should know.

"So wot's goin' on in da old world wit' all da peoples an' dat elven coal-lishun dat you mentioned who also threw you out an' tried to hide it all under da rug, wot're dey up to, an' you are all magic wit' felpowder an' hats?"

Boss Bawss waits patiently as Celicia takes a minute to parse that entire run-on sentence, her brow furrowed in thought and her long ears twitching every now and then.

"So... you're asking about the Old World, the types of people that inhabit it, and any recent current events that might be important?" Celicia hazards.

Boss Bawss stares in something approximating awe. "... are you some kinda wizard?"

"If only," she grumbles, before clearing her throat. "Well, I've been here for the past few years, so- fuck, everything I know is probably outdated by now. Anyway."

(Cont.)
>>
>>21382455
Celicia takes another cigarette from her pouch, lighting it, and inhaling from it in one smooth motion. "So... the Old World, it's like a plate floating in the sea, 'cept it was shattered into a top half and two fourths, and each piece separated by a channel of water- don't you even THINK about fucking trying to correct me, I know my math," she warns, pointing her smouldering cigarette at the larger ogre.

Boss Bawss tries his best to look innocent, and after a moment, she nods and continues, exhaling some smoke.

"On the top half of the old world, you basically got groundlings- dwarfs and their ilk- ensconced in the northern mountains, and humans along the southern edge. They're not really fighting that much nowadays, but it's tense." Celicia starts drawing rough diagrams in the sand. "On the southeast subcontinent, nightmares and orcs, who have contests to see which of them can take the biggest shits on everyone else. No surprise there. And the southwest continent-"

Celicia marks an 'X' on that spot. "- the elves. Like, all of the elves, who're the only ones who managed to unite under one banner, even the dark elves." She shrugs. "... well, the Elven Coalition isn't even a hundred years old, but it's still doing okay, I guess."

The female elf shoots a glance at the larger ogre. "... and ogres are basically everywhere. I mean, the other races, they travel and put up settlements outside their own continents, but... that's basically that."

(Cont.)
>>
>>21382457
Boss Bawss scratches his head, trying to persuade his brain to retain all of that information. "So... dat Elven Coalition, dat's wot sent you here, right?"

Celicia nods, shifting from a squatting position to a cross-legged one. "Right. And the bigwigs over there are trying to show the world that the Elven Coalition is a force to be reckoned with, and all that. Daphnaia isn't the only new settlement, you know- just the only one on Terra Incognita." She grimaces. "Cross-ocean teleportation isn't cheap, let me tell you that."

"So dat portal in Daphnaia-"

"Don't worry. Once they figured that this was a bust, they probably dismantled their end of the portal for parts," Celicia grumbles, propping her chin onto her hand. "If anything, the Coalition will try to grab land from southern chain of islands or the nightmares and orcs' subcontinent before they even set eyes on Terra Incognita again."

She pauses, looking up at the sky in thought. "... though- hell if I know what the other races think of Terra Incognita. I know there've been some expeditions before, but I don't think anyone else was even talking about it while I was back home."

(Cont.)
>>
>>21382462
Boss Bawss nods, a weight lifting from his mind. "Okay, so... wot 'bout magic?"

"What about it? I mean, each kind of elf practices a different school of magic, really." Celicia tosses her hair over one shoulder, her cigarette still clamped between her lips. "The most you can say is that all elves have it to some extent, it's just... some can better defend against it than others. Also, we brought a few minor druids with us, but that's about it. The rest of it..."

Celicia easily unslings her rifle from her shoulder and holds it like she would her own child. Boss notes that she curiously keeps one finger off the strange trigger assembly near the middle, almost without thinking. "... we work our magic with /these/ things. -- not literally," she adds, seeing the expression on Boss's face.

The larger ogre looks at the rifle cradled in Celicia's arms. It's scuffed and looking quite well-worn, but shiny and well-maintained nonetheless. "Dat's wot you call felpowder, right?"

"Felpowder rifles," Celicia clarifies, carefully resting the rifle on her knees. "Elven make, and designed for durability, so they can basically last for decades-long campaigns, and take whatever ammunition we can scrounge up or cobble together. Heck, getting the felpowder's the hardest part, and that's a cakewalk."

(Cont.)
>>
>>21382457
You know, Bawss needs to try a cigarette some time. Just because.
>>
>>21382468
Boss looks up. "How d'you get felpowder?"

"Summon minor imp, then stuff 'em into a portable blessed meat grinder and use the powder that's left behind."

Celicia pauses, blinking at Boss Bawss's suddenly-blank expression. "... what?"

"Ain't dat a little... uh, y'know." The larger ogre scratches his chin, searching for the appropriate word. 'Terrifying'? 'Weird'? "... unhygienic?" he hazards.

"... trust me, no one- and I mean NO one- misses minor imps," Celicia grumps, rolling her eyes. "Fuck- they're nuisances at best and baby-snatchers at worst. Surely you aren't going to object to THAT, of all things?"

Boss Bawss squints at the rifle again, not sure what to make of this new development.

[ ] [OKAY] As long as you clean up afterward, I'm okay wit' dat.

If it isn't risky then, okay, fine. Just clean up afterwards.

If it IS risky, that's a right NOPE, at least on/in Ogir Place. They can do it somewhere that doesn't endanger the boys.

On another note, how long till we accidentally figure out how to make actual gunpowder?

WHOA god, it's motherfucking 4 am over here and I'm pretty much tapped out for the night (if I want to actually be productive tomorrow, which needs to happen).

Thanks for participating, you guys, and I hope you had fun. We'll pick up next time with [CLARIFY]ing about the whole demon meat grinder process, before watching over the elf/ogre mixed group shenanigans and then moving onto Scaratone diplomacy!

NEXT TIME will have to be... probably next Friday, 11/9, at 8 pm EST. If it somehow ends up being earlier, I'll drop a line on my Twitter thingamajig.

..but where is the ogre/elf hug?
>>
>>21379118
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the handshake between Commander Celicia Silverstone and Boss Bawss Fistboss will go down in history as something really quite symbolic; there's just something about the image of a lithe, graceful figure dwarfed by the hulking, bestial leader of the ogres, but still joining hands in friendship.

What came AFTER the handshake is rarely remarked upon in future works of scholarship, however.

"... put me down," Celicia squeaks indignantly, her voice largely muffled by the large mass of PURE 100% OGRE having enveloped her in a gigantic bear hug. "And I will guarantee that your suffering at the hands of my vengeful wrath will be probably be minimal."

"Nuh-uh," Boss Bawss Fistboss rumbles back. "We did dat hand-shaky thing your way, but dis is da OGRE style greetin'! It's only propa." He swings her around for a few more moments before putting her down, the female elf's steps unsteady as she quickly puts some distance between herself and her assailant.

"-- okay, fuck, now you listen here-" Celicia's tirade is cut short by the strange snake-wrapped-around-rock-with-cactus-and-fish-bones thrust into her hands. "... what is this."

"Dis is your hat! Hats are da ogres' specialty- an' now it shows dat you are a propa friend of da ogres," Boss Bawss rumbles proudly, patting the rapidly disturbed elf on the head. "See, even da Scaratone Queen had one of these."

That shuts Celicia up. "... that queen of the beetle-men has a hat, too?"

Boss Bawss nods. "An' how! Anyway, let's get ready to go back."

Celicia stares thoughtfully at the 'hat' in her hands as he turns to leave...

**A FEW HOURS LATER**

The elven soldiers move through Daphnaia Tree's rooms, making sure that everything is in order and that nothing was put out of sorts during the treelocation to Ogir Place.

"... come to think of it, have any of you guys seen the Commander lately?" one of the recruits asks, looking around worriedly.

"Commander Celicia? ... well, I heard from a friend in another squad that-" The elf next to him lowers his voice. "- she's been holed up in her private quarters ever we finished moving Daphnaia. Last anyone saw of her, she was just sitting in front of the mirror with that freaky poker face of hers, with that ogre's 'hat'-thing on her head! Muttering about how she won't be outdone by the beetle-men, if we and the ogres are really going to go have a talk with them."

The first elf soldier shakes his head sadly. "Guess all of this was just too much for her, all in one day."

"Can't say I blame her," mutters the other soldier. "All of this is a lot for ANYONE to take in..."

>If a [GODDESS OF LUCK INTERVENTION] was ever represented as a post (which will never happen), it'd probably go something like this:

High above the planet, past the clouds but not yet in the reaches of space, in a realm that really only exists figuratively (except not really, because fucking deities)... the Weaver of Fates leans back in His theoretical chair and runs a theoretical hand over what is theoretically His face.

Good, good. Finally, a break in the ogres' amazingly stupid string of fortuitous events, and He didn't even have to do more than He normally does. Now, perhaps, the ogres will not so easily sway these wayward elves to their cause, and-

"HEY"

The Weaver of Fates looks up, His celestial face, the visage that no mortal man has ever laid eyes upon, slowly turning into a mask of utter terror. Oh, gods no. Not now, didn't they just distract her with-

"HEY, WEEEEAVER!" A vision of beauty in shimmering godsilk, a woman whose impossibly perfect features would make even the most stone-hearted men weep, twirls into the Weaver's inner sanctum. "WHATCHA DOOOOOOOOOING?" she yodels in a voice like a choir of heavenly, drunk-ass angels, leaping up to swing wildly from the chandelier bathing the room in a holy light.

(Cont.)

Love you.
>>
>>21382859
"What- no- for the love of- STOP that!" The Weaver of Fate howls, shaking his fists at the Goddess of Luck. "Seriously, I'm trying to do serious work here!" He picks up a spare ball of reality yarn and hurls it at the Goddess of Luck- only for her to veer slightly to the side, entirely by chance.

And then she suddenly isn't there anymore, instead standing over the Weaver of Fates' grand celestial table, impossibly filled with millions upon millions of pieces, stacked together in multiple dimensions and in a way that would drive most mortal men utterly insane. "OOOH, YOU GOT YOURSELF SOME DOOOOLLIES, WEAVER!"

"Wha- no! Theyre action figures! /Action figures/," the Weaver shrieks, lunging for the Goddess and missing her by miles as she instinctively makes reality her bitch.

"OH HEY!" The Goddess's eyes widen and sparkle at a few blue pieces gathered in one hex. "OGRES! I LOVE THOSE GUYS, THEY'RE SOOOOO FUNNY!! CAN I HAVE ONE HUH HUH HUH?"

"NO!" The Weaver screams, looking around for something- ANYTHING he can use- but before he can so much as move...

The Goddess backs away, not having touched a thing. "OKAY, BORED NOW! SEEYA LATER, WEAVER! WHEEEEEEEEE!"

And just like that, she's gone.

The Weaver slumps back into his chair, breathing a sigh of relief. Good, good. No harm, no foul, aside from His (figurative) gray hairs. As long as She didn't touch anythi-

He blinks at the gameboard.

Was it his imagination, or did that game piece shift just the slightest bit...?
