You are Ellie, a Kyokugen-ryu fighter and King of Fighters contender. You and your teammates (the kickboxing Belle and the aikido nun Moira) are meeting for your standard afternoon practice.

"Did you see the World Warrior fight last night?" Belle asks as she warms up. "I swear to god it ended with the two fighters hugging it out."

Some days you're just upset you can't punch the entire planet.

>previous threads here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Street%20Fighter

"Is that better, do you think? One of them was some sort of evil sumo wizard, right?" Moira says.

"Every sentence of this is the worst thing I've ever heard," you say. "Let's just get to fighting already."

You continue to be Ellie.

"Moira, you're up," you say. She nods once then joins you in the center of the dojo.

You take a ready stance, watching her for any weaknesses or bad habits you should be aware of. She holds her hands out, infinitely still, infinitely calm. It actually borders on unnerving.

"Ready when you are," she says.

You are now Moira, a young nun in training who fights to raise money for her church. You were originally trained in the arts of Evil Aikido from a dojo opened by the late Geese Howard before giving it up to focus on the whole nun thing. Your church and the orphanage it operates are always in need of money, though, and you began to reason that you must have this talent for Evil Aikido for a reason. The next day you responded to an ad for a King of Fighters team situated out of a Kyokugen dojo. Reasoning that Kyokugen fighters typically do well in KOF, you decided to join the team.

Now a woman in a skull t-shirt is trying to punch you in the face. Time to put that evil aikido to work.

>how Moira's counterfighting works: roll 2d6 and a game of craps begins. On the first roll 7 is an automatic win, 2 or 14 is an automatic loss. If you roll any number other than those three that becomes the point. Rolls after the first attempt to hit the point before hitting another seven.
>Depending on the difficulty of the attack, a number of allowed failures will be given, then the attack succeeds on the first success. Or you fail to counter and you just get hit. Against Ellie in a training session let's set the difficulty at two three losses to one success.

Like a good aikidoka and like a good Catholic woman (especially of the cloth), Moira will not throw the first punch. In that case, I'd tell her to practice her baits, but thinking on it, not doing anything at all seems to be a valid bait in itself. Eventually, someone has to make a move. One may worry that she's a bit too passive, but can you really hold it against her?

>>
>>21356118

Yep.

The odds are stacked against the player in a game of craps, so a certain number of allowed failures will be built in. In this case you had to succeed once before you failed twice.

Honestly this isn't proceeding as smoothly as I'd hoped, I think Moira's dice system is probably up for a redesign.

Do it like you do counters in-game: make the player guess high or low.

Set a number on a die (e.g. 15 on a d20). The players have to call high or low on the roll (made by you or the player, I dunno). If they guess right, the counter works. The more extreme the target number, the easier the counter is implied to be.
>>

>>21356177
And if the roll is exactly on the target number, it's a critical counter.

For example, on a stupidly telegraghed punch that there's no way for Moira to botch countering, the target number would be 20 (or 1) on a d20. Everyone would call low, roll the d20, it'd be below the target number, and she'd successfully counter. If the roll was a 20, however, she'd get a super counter.
>>
>>21356177

>I like it, but wouldn't it make sense for everyone to simply choose the broader number? Maybe decisions leading up to the actual counter could change the number? Hm.

Ellie is strong and fast as hell, but she's predictable. While she's still winding up for her punch your hands are already moving. By the time it's coming to your face (faster than expected, actually, the woman's a beast) your right hand is moving the fist one direction, your left hand tugging the elbow the other. You keep your left foot planted firmly as you move the right foot in a semicircle behind you, twisting your entire body with it. Ellie's arm moves with you, and by extension the rest of Ellie goes following her arm across the room.

"Okay, that's good," she says, rising to her feet. "Where the hell does a nun even learn to fight like that?"

She's punching at you again already. You're pretty sure she doesn't actually expect an answer.

>Setting up your high low:
>Answer her question, maybe it will distract her
>Step back, force her to keep coming at you
>Step in, give her a target

Obviously, the most difficult counter to make would be the 50-50 (target number 10 on a d20, etc.). That's when an attack can honestly go either direction. Of course, in that case, you'd probably dodge anyway.

Precisely. Plus, you know how fickle /tg/ dice are. The opponent could always beat the odds and either overpower or loop around the counter. If you were to make a list of choices when regarding a guy swinging a haymaker at you, you'd post:

>Step back!
>Duck and retort with a palm to the jaw!
>Counter! (Target: 5)

>Answer her question, maybe it will distract her

Not that guy, but the way I see it, there's still the option to risk it and go for the narrower choice, which, while a bad move statistically, will occasionally pay off and keep people choosing it, due to the sort of illogical reasoning that keeps people gambling actual money.

Decisions changing the TN is also good though, as that way it's not just luck.

Remember, in-game counters and handled because it hingles on the player being able to understand his opponent's psychology and properly anticipating when he might throw what. If he starts getting predictable and throws the same thing, you can more readily expect the same attack and counter accordingly. On the other hand, if you parry low when he swings high, well, you're boned.
>>
"Parents signed me up for it when I was a kid," you say, turning aside another punch. She's not throwing them so wildly now, you're having to work harder for it. You start taking measured steps back, carefully working out her range. If you're not mistaken any second now she's going to transition from a simple one-two combo to a one-two with a right roundhouse. As she throws another jab you're pretty sure you catch that telltale shift of her balance.

You were right. You drop your left hand to intercept her kick closer to the knee (where it will hurt your hand less) and turn it upwards. Your right presses downwards on the leg on the other side of the knee, forcing the rest of her body to twist with it. She loses her balance and falls to the floor.

My original impression was that hitting the target itself would be the equivalent of a critical miss. A bit counter-intuitive, maybe, but a 1 on a low call and a 20 on a high call seem like a good fit for a critical success. If you hit the target, though, whether you called high or low you're technically wrong.

I see what you mean, but it feels a little weird for a counter to have 2 chances for critical success and none for critical failure, unless failing a counter meant you took more damage from the hit by default. You step in, throwing light jabs and range-testing kicks that are too light to properly counter. Moira parries as best she can, moving backwards bit by bit. How'd she go from learning Evil Aikido to being a nun? How does she resolve being a nun with busting faces?
>>
"What's it like being a nun?" you ask. You try chaining a pair of kicks together, she blocks and tries circling to your left.

"I'm not a nun yet, I'm still in training," she says. She tries throwing a counterpunch. Far too slow, you think as you slip it. Going to have to work on her striking.

"So you haven't taken vows yet? Celibacy and all?"

"N-no, not officially, but I..." She stops moving and starts blushing. Maybe don't press this just now.

"Okay, how about the fighting? I mean, you use Evil Aikido. It's right in the name," you say. You throw out a jab that misses her by a foot. You just wanted to get her fighting again instead of blushing.

"It's not really called Evil Aikido," she says, "Everyone just calls it that because of Geese. And the church doesn't know yet."

"Really?" you ask, surprised. "I mean, they're gonna find out when they see you on TV, right?"

"If we have a televised bout and someone recognizes me, I will deal with it then," she says firmly. "Until then it is a non-issue."

Close combat against this level off defense is going nowhere. Time for projectile spam, you think.

You are once again Ellie, Kyokugen fighter on the streets of Southtown. After quietly leaving the room and venting your frustration on a heavy bag dad installed in the living room you realized you'd forgotten your original excuse for leaving the dojo.

You probably said you'd get everyone sandwiches? That sounds plausible. You throw on a jacket and head out.

It's growing cold in Southtown, getting to the point you can see your breath. You consider going back in for a scarf, but the sub shop shop is right down the corner. You should be there and back before you know it.

You're trying to remember if Belle is a vegetarian or not as you pass by an empty lot that used to be a car dealership way back in the 80s. The dealership moved out, ever since then it's been an on-again off-again place for Karate Hobos to camp out. They never really took a shining to Southtown they way they did Metro City. Mostly because your mayor never left cooked food in the streets.

Looks like some of them have moved back in. You can see Karate Joe's enormous frame (and a little bit of that smell), a little guy in pink and...dad?

What the hell is dad doing with the karate hobos?

You decide to check it out. Maybe he finally snapped and decided to join them?

When you get closer it doesn't look quite so friendly. Dad and Karate Joe are squared off, the man in the pink gi hiding behind Karate Joe.

"I won him fair and square," Tatsuya says. "Hand over the little guy."

"My student," Karate Joe says. "He left Southtown with me. Also he says you'll make him fight bears."

"Not until he's ready to fight bears!" Tatsuya says.

"Hey dad," you say. "What's up?"

Tatsuya looks startled to see you, then delighted. "Pumpkin! Glad to see you. I was just working on getting a new student for the school. This guy in pink has the toughest head I've ever seen in my life. He kinda sucks, though."

"Hey, I don't-" he starts.

"He does," Karate Joe says. "If he spends some time with me I can teach him the ways of chi, he'll be a powerful fighter in no time."

"If he comes with me I can give him enough attacking power to use that defense to its fullest," Tatsuya says. "Also you don't have to eat street turkey. Do the right thing here, son."

>What should we do?

"I thought you were training that Anon guy?" you ask.

"He doesn't have this once-in-a-lifetime skull," Tatsuya says. "Oh yeah, I was fighting this guy on a train all night, did you see who won yesterday?"

"Anon did," you say. "Hugged the other guy and then threw him."

"That's Anon for you," Tatsuya says. "Fights like a beast, but that isn't his real strength."

"Pete likes him. Makes him okay by me," Karate Joe says.

"He yelled at me for awhile and then hit me really hard," the guy in pink says.

"Yeah, but it was what you needed to hear," Tatsuya says. "Just like this is: walk down the street and live in my dojo. I'll make a man out of you."

"Come with me and you don't fight any bears," Karate Joe says. "And I'll give you the gravel-free parts of the turkey for an entire week. That's huge."

"Hey, who wants to watch Belle fight a nun?" you ask.

"Like a Catholic nun?" Tatsuya asks.

"I dunno, it seemed rude to ask. She's usually got the whole costume on, though."

"...like, an old nun? Is she beating up an old woman?" Karate Joe asks.

"Nah, she's in her twenties. Does Evil Aikido."

"Oh shit yes I want to watch that," Tatsuya says. "Come on everyone, this is gonna be good."

As your group makes its way back to the dojo you speed up a bit to walk beside your dad. "Hey," you say, "You have to come back and run the dojo. We've got bills to pay and you never told me the account number for our water company."

"Oh. Sorry, pumpkin," he says, actually bashful. "I just thought it'd be fun to get out and take a little vacation, you know? Give Pete some lessons, follow up on Anon, check out Metro City."

"I know, I know. Just...come home, okay?" you say.

>Sorry to disappear, real life got in the way for a bit

You finally make it back to the dojo. For a second you think you see the owner of the yoga studio glaring at you as you pass, but she's gone when you glance to check. Weird.

Inside the dojo, as you're taking off your coat and (emphatically) telling Karate Joe to wipe his feet you can hear Belle and Moira inside.

"That's enough, you got me," Moira is saying. "What do you call those things?"

"Love Taps," Belle says, her voice dripping with suggestion.

"What's all this then?" you ask.

"Just sparring," Belle says. "W-what's up with you?"

"Found Tatsuya and Karate Joe," you say.

"On the way to the kitchen to get a drink?" Belle asks.

"...yes," you say. Best to just double down on this. "Anyway. Dad's back."

"That Anon guy with him?" Belle asks.

"Nah, just a couple of karate hobos."
