((Previous thread: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/21330739/))

Your name is Camille; to make a long story short, you're a college age girl with recently awakened superpowers. Your Origin (though you don't yet know it by that name) is Perception, and by invoking the word in your mind, you enjoy a variety of benefits which you are currently testing the limitations of. This ability comes with a level of backlash in the form of a worrisome headache that gets worse the more you use it and the more ambitious your uses grow; this headache, however, fades away after a time of not using your ability. You've also been seeing—or feeling—strange “dots”, mental indicators that urge you towards random places, some much further away than others. While at the dinner hall a few minutes ago, you noted the presence of one of them nearby, most likely on campus.

To commemorate the end of your week of sensory deprivation after accidentally beating a mugger to death, you left your college dorm and ate dinner with friend Anne and new acquaintances Elissa and Brittany; for this, you've earned such obligations as group study and intramural soccer. They're scheduled in the coming days, but you may or may not attend—you'll send a text and let them know,

Since, you've returned to your room, and are debating your next move.
>>
>>21343783
We should seek out one of these dots and see what they are. Look for the closest one.

I suspect it is other people with similar abilities as we.
Another thing, can we get a gun? Legally I mean? I bet we would be a crack-shot at it.
>>
>>21343840

You're pretty sure conceal and carry is legal in your town, but weaponry definitely isn't allowed on campus; not only would you have to deal with hiding it everywhere, you don't even know how you'd go about getting a gun. You think you need a license, or some such? You've never touched a gun in your life, but who knows how well you'd use one in your current state.
>>
>>21343899
I bet we would be awesome. We should look into getting a license, just in case.

anyway, lets search for a dot.
>>
>>21343840
I like the idea of a gun, if only for self protection, though I disagree that we should be exploring the idea of these dots so eagerly when we have no idea how far we can push our Perception ability without hurting our brain.

I vote we stay in our room and push our powers to the limit, just to see what we can do without frying out brain. After we judge that much we can go have dot adventures.
>>
>>21343921
>>21343994
Guys, try to keep it in character rather than go all power-player.

Anyway, check the messages of other people that might have called us. I assume some would be family right? Better not let them worry too much.
>>
>>21344057
Dunno, I think it is well in character.
I mean, we almost got murdered a week ago, so self-protection should be on our mind.
>>
>>21344081
I find that kinda worrying that it doesn't have any real effect on us. Could we be slightly sociopathic in nature? Heh.
>>
>>21344081
>>21344057
Not to mention we have absolutely no idea about other people with Origin abilities, and whether they'll be hostile towards us or not.

I think you're almost right about a gun being out of character, but I don't think it's completely out of the question. We got attacked a week ago, and we're not very strong physically. A gun is something that might save our tush later on.

Like >>21343921 said, we should at least look into getting a license. With the reports of mugging the police won't at us too suspiciously if we at least ask.
>>
>>21343783
Egad! A new thread!
I shall inform the old thread of this.
>>
>>21343783
I'll suggest we take a few moments to test a few things around our dorm room. Test our pre...whatever recall, see how much we can remember clearly about what we were studying without looking. Just a test to see if the extra Perception applies to things we've already interacted with, or if we would need to spend time going back over things to firmly cement them in our mind.

Which reminds me: We never found out or determined what we were studying. She was bookish and unathletic, I would lean toward library sciences and something else on the side.

>>21343899
If we want to determine a state I could look up the RL carrying laws, but those may not apply to your setting. You control the horizontal and the vertical.
>>
>>21344125

It'd be a lie to say it didn't affect you at all. You've thought through it, and resolved it as self defense in your mind, but this resolution comes with ease in part because the whole thing was an awakening-induced blur at the time, and in part because you've just been trying not to think about it. You're rational, and you think you can come off as a bit cold from time to time, but you treasure people, and relationships, and are by no means a killer.

>>21344057
>>21343994

You lean back in your desk chair and begin scrolling through messages; there's a few news announcements from mailing lists you signed up for for events long past, as well as the calls of a few people inviting you to lunch and dinner. A missed call and a text message from dear old Dad, reminding you to call home more often—you don't think he's really worried about anything, as it seems like more of a formality—as well as a few older texts from Anne asking why you haven't been in class.

You scroll further down. There's a message from Will, a guy you hang out in the hall lobby with from time to time: "Where have you been?" There's also another, from a guy named Spencer; you don't really know him too well, but the two of you did math homework together a few times and he texts you every now and again. It, like the last one, is from a couple days ago: "Hey, you gonna be on campus tonight?"

(Cont)

>>21344144
>Not to mention we have absolutely no idea about other people with Origin abilities, and whether they'll be hostile towards us or not.
It's really like worrying if people with uncanny mathematical ability are going to fuck up the world or not (did someone say banksters?), really. I mean, okay, we're all savvy but seriously, it might not be this kind of quest, and remember we're only a college girl, obviously non-violent. And meta-gaming wise, imagine if that other Original has a prescriptive word "Gunman" or something to that extent.

It doesn't really make sense to start worrying about people like us attacking us, we don't even know if they exist.

And that could be something we could put our Perception to work. Start zapping through news television channels while reading a dozen newspapers at the same time to see if anything is out of the ordinary.
>>
You set your phone down and put it in your mind to respond to the messages, and one of your English books on your desk catches your eye. You've been using it for this semester; it's an anthology of famous short stories and poetry, with threads for analysis and various references. At just a glance, one of the last works you read in the collection begins to coalesce in your mind; at first, you mistake it for memory, but it begins to surprise you, and the words become clear as if the story was set in front of you again. It's not necessarily total recall—and you doubt, in places, your own perception—but considering you only read the work once, it's a bit impressive.

You place your hand on the book to open it, then pause, given a stroke of curiosity. The title page is in front of you, and you look at it, then through it, pressing your vision to the next page and beyond. Your eyes ache, and your head aches, and the words become blurry as you press further into the book, scanning through its works with the cover closed. Slowly, you tilt your head back, and “look” upward, still attempting to focus on the words beneath each page, until you can discern nothing but black against white, and darkness creeping in from the edges of your vision; you gasp, and almost fall forward into your desk, catching yourself and instinctively placing a hand against your forehead.

Ow.
>>
>>21344502
(Should we decide on doing something now, or are you writing?)
>>
>>21344502
we should go easy when using these powers. Start slow and easy, and train yourself up to harder stuff instead of trying to do incredibly hard shit from the get go.

((If I'm still writing, I'll end the post with '(Cont)'.))
>>
>>21344502
ALRIGHT

This is no "seeing through walls with my senses," but goddamn is it a good start. This is pretty impressive stuff we've got on hand.

I think it'd be interesting to see what our Perception can do when we're not straining ourselves. Any "normal" person can make assumptions on how a person they're meeting for the first time will act based on their appearance, mannerisms, posture, and so on, so if we have boosted Perception we should be able to make pretty good deductions as to what kind of people we're dealing with as we meet them. We can try this at soccer and with these two dudes who have been harassing our poor, shy bookworm girl.
>>
>>21344502
Hm, good to know. Our recall seems retroactive, and we could do the whole read a book with a touch thing. Might be easier to just flip through a book real fast and scan it that way, rather than taking it in quite that.. forcefully.

Time to take this in another direction. Let us hit the computer and/or library and see what we can research about things similar to what we have experienced. Prehaps with our personal experience with it, and our eye for detail, we might be about to ferret out a few true stories from the muck.
>>
>>21344662
In that case, how about we do a little investigation on the guy who mugged us? If I'm remembering this correctly, there was a string of attacks in the area, and when we were next we took him out in a rather spectacular manner before blacking out for a week. If he was caught there might be a story on it and we can piece together what happened the other times.
>>

Good points.

Gather Information teim.
>>
Elbows planted on the desk in front of your laptop, you take to massaging your temples for a few moments, using your hands to shield your eyes from the fluorescent light above. Definitely a good start. You were able to press through a few pages without moving the book's cover, and you think you might have made out a few words while looking at the ceiling; the incident was a bit fuzzy. You can't tell whether or not you're getting better, but improvement, you think, will come from slow and easy practice rather than pushing yourself to the limit each time. Don't want to have a stroke, or something.

You shake your head for the hundredth time today as you make your way toward the door to your room; you flick the lights off, return to your desk, then flip your laptop open. If you're good at perception, let's try to gather a bit of information. You open a pair of local news streams—one is synchronized with the television news network, and the other is a playlist of top stories starting last week—and slip your headphones over your ears, scrolling through text articles while you listen and watch in cascaded windows.

There are brief lapses in the information, where your mind stutters with confusion, but for the most part, it feels as if you're watching the videos seperately, and giving the articles your whole mind. Your first pause comes when you find the man who you think attacked you last Sunday. His corpse was found in an alley—the street isn't listed, but it's noted to be a few blocks down from your campus—next to a bloodied baseball bat. Identified as Alan Wilkinson, in his forties, inebriated at the time of death, no dependents. The article mentions that there's no specific evidence pointing to a killer; you're not sure if the search has been dropped or not.

(Cont)
>>
You start paying attention to the local crime reports. Only one catches your eye, though; both news channels and one of the written reports, between them, note three different instances of -ridiculous- murder cases.

The remains of three humans were located—two in their homes, and one in a neighborhood across town—with little attempt made to hide them. In all three cases, the bodies were almost completely destroyed, with the text article citing the remains as “pulpy”, and noting that even their bones were reduced to dust and scattered about the scenes. The victims were identifiable through their DNA; they're linked by nothing other than the fact that they're all female, and even then there's a significant age difference. The killer, though, assuming all three crimes can be attributed to the same person, has left nothing; no signs of a struggle, no fingerprints, and police haven't even found a hair. Strikes you as a bit... off.

You think to move on to medical news, but aren't sure how you'd pick up on supernatural activity in that sphere; medicine has always seemed a bit arcane to you. Instead, you sit back for a moment, and close your straining eyes; you've only been watching and reading for a few minutes, but it feels like much, much longer. Voices continue softly droning from your headphones as you contemplate your next course of action.
>>
>>21345262
we should take a nap
>>
>>21345262
Welp, I think we can assume that's the work of another Origin.

Time to get our PI on.

Were the three sites close together? Did the victims have anything in common re: their lifestyle?
>>
>>21345262
That's very off. I'm going to back looking into guns for self-defence.
>>
>>21345262
Alright, no need to panic. Whoever is going around and murdering these other women is across town, so we might be safe. Assuming he's randomly murdering girls then the odds of us being attacked first on campus are slim.

Problems arise if he's specifically targeting women, and we're in his sights. Making a corpse "pulpy" and leaving no evidence is no small feat. Let's assume for now that the murderer in these cases, male or female, is someone who also has an Origin.

We lie low, gather evidence, and carefully keep track of who we're meeting with.

Sleep. Then resume everyday activities while practicing Perception on the side. Let's not go looking for a crazy murderer, and we have to go up against him/her let's do it on our terms.
>>
>>21345262
That is,, disturbing, There is definitely something unusual there, we should flag that as something to watch for more details and/or similar occurrences.
Though if someone with powers is behind that, we are not in the kind of shape to deal with that ourselves, but we might be uniquely qualified to investigate such things. Bump practicing soccer up as something we may actually do, if noting else better cardio and running away ability, but we're going to have to start working on expanding out social networking toward people in law enforcement.
>>
Check if the murders happened before or after our own discovery of our powers.

Anyway, serial murder cases always make a lot of noise in the news, it's not exactly something we should have to use our power for, unless the murders don't seem connected.
>>
>>21345338
Well, we don't know about Origins, though we might assume that we can't be a unique event.
(As a side question: are Originals from something else, or is it just a cool concept that OP presented?)
>>
>>21345437
Smells like Nobilis to me.
>>
>>21345400
>expanding our social networking toward people in law enforcement.
And as we've already dabbled with, we can be pretty good at making connections with people now. Question is, how to start?
Do we know anyone vaguely associated with law enforcement or connected to someone more closely involved? Find a social in to start threading out way into.
>>
>>21345437
Origins are a thing in the Nasuverse, but there it's more "what kinda magic you good at" rather than "I can do cool stuff now".

It's most likely an original idea.

>>21345451
Unless it's Nobilis, which I have no clue about.
>>
>>21345451

((Never heard of it, actually. The concept comes from a freeform RP I co-adminned a hundred years ago. I've browsed this board for quite a while and haven't seen anything about Nobilis; I've been wanting to run a quest for some time now, though. At this juncture, I'd like to ask how you guys are enjoying the quest so far, and if anyone is taking issue with my storytelling or posting habits; I'd really like feedback, in the name of improvement.

Update coming in a bit.))
>>
>>21345547
I'm cool with it, been following since the last thread. You seem to be doing well at acknowledging general 'group consensus' and mixing in the various ideas people have.
Not fast paced, but as a slow typist myself that works in my favor really.
>>
>>21345338

Miles apart, actually. The first woman was a journalist in her early thirties, living alone in what you've always thought was a relatively nice apartment complex on the south side of the city; there's a pretty comfortable distance between you and that one. The second was in her mid-twenties, and wasn't too far from that one. She lived with her boyfriend in a similar complex, and was found in bits and pieces on the back porch. The third, fifteen years old, found dead almost halfway across the city from where she lived; a bit closer to you, but not yet close enough for you to panic. She's cited as having disappeared the week before.

The remains were discovered this week, but it doesn't seem like times of death have been discerned, if it's even possible.

Murder cases like this should make a media splash; you can't imagine yourself getting tangled up in something like this, and you're doubting whether or not you even need to use your new abilities to take all of this in. It's good practice, regardless.

You briefly think about any ties you might have to law enforcement. Dear old Dad works for a pretty big-time insurance company, and your mom's a business major who's been trying to get into real estate: nothing there. Your friends... hell, it dawns on you that you've never really bothered asking what their parents do. Talk about perception.

You crawl into bed and take your laptop with you, not bothering to change clothes, still scrolling through the news on autopilot, with half a mind to take a quick nap and continue working your abilities in everyday situations when you wake up.
>>
>>21345547
I personally can't say I see too many flaws in the way you're conducting this. I've been following you since your last thread, and it seems like you read most (if not all of) the responses and take the most popular opinions together and make them the next action. I'm interested in seeing how this plays out.

>>21345631
Alrighty, let's go to classes and figure out what major we're even in. It seems like a lot of people are fairly interested in finding out what we're doing. Continue lightly practicing Perception in class to help with studies.

When simple playground politics ceased to be, then, your scholarly skills became a blessing. You bolt awake and look around, driven into momentary panic by a choking scent like that of ammonia fumes, then roll sideways out onto a sprawling hillside of cyan grass before stumbling to your feet. Trees dot the landscape around you, and heady white fumes rise up from the ground, stretching toward the horizon and merging with clouds sinking deep into the light purple sky.

You are unsure of how to perceive this area, and what to make of it; your thoughts elude you, and you do not see the familiar dots here. A laugh comes from nearby, and you whirl instinctively, assuming a defensive stance, which you relax at the sight of a bearded man, a few years older than you, with long, brown hair, and loosely-fitting silken clothes. He smiles, seated on top of a tree root that emerges from the ground over a dip in the plain ahead.

“Ah, most excellent. Looks like I get to visit someone today after all.” He chuckles, sending you a wave. “You look troubled. Am I interrupting something?”

At first, you think your attempts look more like mockery; your perception of this man is shaky, and seems slightly off for some reason, but you find yourself able to loosen up after a few moments, matching his own level of relaxation.

“Hey, no worries. Loosen up. You're thinking it too hard—I can see you trying! You know where you are. I'm the one that's out of place.” He chuckles, folding his hands behind his head and leaning into the tree. “Name's Nelson, but enough about me. Tell me something cool—what's your big dream?”

“How did you get here?” You ask. “Why did you come?”

“Are we still on this?” Nelson sighs, then urges you toward a protruding tree stump that you're not sure was there before. “You just gotta go with the flow. You're really not gonna say anything until I do, huh? Fine, fine. Come sit, if you want.”

A brief pause, then he continues. “Oh, huh. Where do I even start? This place is making me wax a bit symbolic. I guess I asked you that question because I always had big dreams. They changed, every now and again, but, sparing you the details, I did the dumbest thing I could have done—I let myself down. I didn't think there was a place for me in life, did you know?”

“I can't recall where this place is.” You speak, and he continues, apparently ignoring you for the moment. Big dream? You haven't even figured out what you're doing with your life yet, and all of a sudden, you barely know who you are.

“I fell on hard times, then. Didn't have a job, a place to live, a real education, and I didn't know what to do.” Nelson stands, looking at the endless, rolling cyan hills. “So I slept on it, and I saw a better place, and from then on, I spent my every waking hour trying to get there. I didn't really know where, though, until a week or so ago. I woke up for real, because all that time, I'd been living it. Dream—that's the word I saw, in my head. Must be kind of strange to think about, huh? If you really want to know, I guess we're in -your- head. Been walking like this for a while now. It's relaxing, isn't it? “So you're some sort of dreamwalker?” You ask.

“Apparently. Makes sense, though, that dream's the word that chose to follow me.” Nelson shrugs, then smiles. “Life is but a dream, right? Dreaming's how I lived my life; in a way, it's kind of where I came from. Who knows why I can do this now? I haven't questioned it. It's for the best.”

“So shouldn't you ask before jumping into people's heads?” You ask. “What if I was dreaming of something private?”

“Our dreams are always somehow real, so can they really be that bad? Besides, it's not like I actually know you.” He shrugs. “I don't choose who I'm visiting. It's all a part of the, uh, collective unconscious, or something.”

You try to add another tree to the landscape by simply willing it into existence, but don't find much success. The conversation stalls, and you speak up again. “Are you a friend, or an enemy?”

“I guess that's for you to decide.”

>are you a friend, or an enemy?
I don't think we would ask that, college students don't tend to have enemies. I don't think he would take it well, he's acted nothing but friendly. And I don't think it would accomplish anything because if it is an act he's hardly going to admit it.
>>
>>21348394
I would think that we're in a state of lucid dreaming. We would be able to tell that this entity is foreign to our minds, especially with our power of Perception. A foreign entity invading our mind, though it may have a friendly aura, may just be attempting to deceive us. This is amercia. Aren't they generally worldly about Satan and his ways?
>>
>>21348391
"Probably doesn't matter. If your dream thing is random what are the chances you'll come to me again? So... what do you want to do?"

>>21348483
Doesn't change the fact that Satan isn't exactly going to go "Well done, yes, I am trying to trick you!" if you ask.
>>
>>21348518
Good point. I'll take care not to be so naive in the future.
>>
"So you visit other people's dreams, huh? Have you ever met anyone like yourself, who can do strange things or have 'words that follow them,' like you and Dream?"
>>
"Probably doesn't matter. If your dream thing is random what are the chances you'll come to me again, right?” You ask, and he nods. In hindsight, asking whether he's friend or foe might not have been too smart a question, seeing as he probably wouldn't tell you if he was actually trying to trick you. “So you visit other people's dreams, huh? Have you ever met anyone like yourself, who can do strange things or have 'words that follow them', like you and Dream?”

“Oh, how'd you know about that?” He asks. “I was starting to think it was just coincidence. Most of the people I've visited have mentioned something like that, but I was afraid to ask. Seems strange, doesn't it? What'd I say it was, again—where I came from, or something?”

“Origin.” You're not sure what brings the word to your mind. Nelson's circumstances seem oddly similar to yours; his experience of waking up to a part of himself, and the sensation of a single word buzzing in his mind are akin to yours: Perception.

“Yeah, that sounds good. Some of the people I've visited, we got to talking, and they told me stories about what they'd felt, and the conclusion I'm coming to now is that I'm another one of them.” Nelson says. “You see them too, right? Places in the mind, drawing you towards locations that you don't know, that you've never been to? Each one of them's another one of us Origin-folk, and more of them are waking up to it all the time.”

You begin to speak, but stagger. Your perception is deluded, and an odd feeling of drowsiness comes about you as the scent of this place becomes evident again.

“Looks like you're due to wake up soon.” He smiles.

"There have been a couple of murders around here lately, where the body was left all pulpy. Have you met anyone who has a power like that?"
>>
>>21348892
"How many other Origin people would you guess there are?"
>>
>>21348807
So non-perception origins probably each have ways to find the others. Dunno if they're all different, or if it's all dots all the time.

Maybe try and get his info before we wake up, if he looks icked out at the mention of murders.

"There have been a couple of murders around here lately, where the bodies were left all, uh... pulpy. Have you met anyone with a power like that?" You ask, followed by a yawn.

"Couldn't say. Not everyone disclosed their words, and a few of the ones I heard were a little questionable." He responds. "Bugs me, though, that we'd use these gifts to kill, when there's so much to be explored."

"How many of us would you guess there are?"

"Lots. There's no way to tell."

"You know a lot about this... how can... How can I get back into contact with you?" You stagger again.

"You're an interesting one." He chuckles. "Never did get your name, but it's alright. If it's supposed to happen, it'll happen. Take care of yourself, then..."

The dreamer's words trail off, and you roll over in bed, opening your eyes to your familiar room. Orange, late-afternoon sunlight shines through the cracks in your window blinds, and you feel strangely refreshed.

You're reminded of what he said about the dots; other Originals, and as you think about them, the closest one comes back to your memory, moving about across campus.

Well, Saturday is a free day. Let's go make friends with whoever this other one is.
Laying low is not really a feasible objective any more if all the other supers have power radars in their heads and could find us that easily.
>>
>>21349202
Is it the murderer?
Does he/she know about us?
Is it someone we know?
Is it a student?
What's their Origin?

Guess it's time for some detective work. We may not be in the same league of power as other Origin humans, but at the very least we should be able to use our Perception to gather information on the other Origin human without drawing -too- much attention to ourselves.

It's the weekend, so let's use the soccer practice as a means to both test how our Perception ability effects our physical activities and the other girls as a way to hide ourselves when going out into public. If the dot singles Origin humans out, then it would be best to make sure we're not easily recognized as the "other" Origin human on campus. If the other Origin human follows his/her dot to a group of girls then at least he/she has to narrow their search further from there.

Let's tend to our new social obligations and test our power. Now that we know a limit, let's see how much finesse we can get out of it instead of just brute strength.

Also: she'd be amazing at sales. Her social is awesom.
>>
>>21346527
Do you mean physical anthropology? That's the study of the long scale development of human physiology and is a big component in forensic science. It's also downright cool!

Full disclosure: my father is a physical anthropologist.
>>
>>21349202
Find one, befriend him or her but do not reveal you've got a power. Let's use her amazing social like a spy would.

Chances are they have the dots or something similar, man. Dream guy was apparently walking into other origin's dreams out of everybody else on earth.

Speaking of which, we should check if the murder victims disappeared for a week or so before they died. I'm afraid I might know how they're connected...
>>
>>21349844
The person near us might not know what the dots mean. We didn't.
>>
>>21349615
Let's just say Forensic Science. More general is more better.
>>21349878
... We immediately figured out what the dots were, didn't we? And we didn't even see them correspond to a person.
>>
Anyone archive this yet?

First thing's first; you tend to your morning routine and change into athletic shorts and tennis shoes, electing for an outfit in preparation for soccer practice later. A quick check of the cell phone alerts you to a text from Elissa: "Practice on the north field at noon."

>>21349357

As far as who it is, you don't have a clue; all you know is that it's another Original, and that's assuming the Dreamer was right. The "dots", then, may be a characteristic of all Originals, so if you were to meet one, they'd know something wasn't right with you, even if they didn't know what the indicator represented.

>>21349844

You remember it pretty well, and a look at the news sites would corroborate the fact that only the fourteen year old is recorded to have disappeared prior to her being found murdered.

You could do more research, go for another walk, get breakfast, wait for practice, or just hang out in the residence hall lobby to pass the time. There's also the matter of an Original on campus who you could feasibly seek out; you wonder if they're thinking the same thing.

((Camille only knew that they were drawing her toward certain places and they didn't stay still; she probably could have made the inference, but didn't know anything implicit until Nelson suggested they represent other people with Origins.))

Breakfast first, then find the other Origin.

Been looking all day for this... Don't know how I missed. Anyways we need to look at the sky. At night.
