Let's do this thing!
>>
>>21313431
Well, eh, after last thread I don't know what to do right off the bat.

I. Ask elder time.
>>
First this >>21313459

Then I recommend G. (always good to have friends), and maybe E? We might as well bump that morale up a bit.
>>
>>21313431
Oh thank god my parents called and woke me up from my nap. Anyway, I'm going with:
D) Have the wise ones continue with writing. We need to develop our language more.
H) Let's look for a priest for the snow godess. If anyone wants to writfag, by all means.
Aaand I don't l know. I wan to say go catch deer for the pen, but it may be too cold still. So I'll go with
I) Let's say what those crazy old nutjobs have to say.
Also, are we saving a festival for the end of winter? So next turn...?
>>
We're having a festival within the next couple of turns, actually. And diplomacy has been overdone a bit, to be honest. I think the last two threads were pretty much devoted to it, if I recall correctly.
>>
Rolled 1, 5, 5 = 11

>>21313505
Seconding
>>
>>21313505
Good idea on the writing, boss. We should wait until we can send some people down the river to that trading village before we get into that though since they probably already have a simpler and better written language (plus stuff to write with and on). And it's ways easier to steal an idea than to come up with one.

Man, I feel bossy after my last two posts.
>>
>>21313581
Oh yea, I think that was actually part of our idea last time, nice catch. I'm not sure if I want to change it though if only because I'm not sure what else we would want to research right now. Better architecture maybe?
>>
>>21313711
Sounds reasonable to me to be honest. I'm at a loss for research ideas anymore so I just go along and hope other people are smarter than me when it come to that sort of stuff.
>>
I'm afraid the Wise Ones at this stage can only develop new technologies to counter an existing problem. The writing system as it stands is considered 'adequate to the tribe's needs' and thus, cannot be altered. I can register this as a cultural direction though, if you want? So it'll be slowly developed over time (and I mean a lot of time).

The tribe's Elders are mostly content over the way things are going, though they do have a tendency to bicker over whether to go and assault the tribe downriver, or whether to focus on trade and peaceful co-operation. Sadly, the elder who finally got his berry liqueur died in the winter snows and is unable to give an opinion. His family is very upset, but at least glad he died happy. For the most part, all the elders can agree on is that Khoine deserves a priest or preistess for her shrine. Some are in favour of waiting for Mikuhla to return and giving him the position, while others think another should be selected.

> On another note, how are burial rites conducted within the tribe?
>>
>>21313933
Oh man that's a good point. Burials. So what do we do, just stick the body in a raft, light it on fire, and sail it down river? 'Cause that's what I would do.
Also yea, Mikuhla is probably the best option for priest.
>>
>>21313979
Sounds good to me, not like we'll be running out of any trees soon since we live in the middle of a gigantic forest.

C. Go gather some clay.
D. Have the elders look into using the clay we found a million threads ago as a tablet to be drawn on. You know, point stick, dig grooves, presto change-o we have something to write on and it's more resilient than coal on a buck skin.
H. Wait for Mikuhla to come back and see what's what.
>>
>>21314133
Just something to get us going, really. Of course anything we'd want to write wouldn't be exactly portable, but wouldn't a gigantic obelisk of clay that tells the heroic epic of Trym look cool somewhere. Sure it'll fade but shiiit.
>>
>>21314184
I like it. Something more permanent to preserve our heroes and legends. And maybe impress any foreigners we deign worthy to enter the village.
>>

Seconding this
>>
Rolled 2, 6, 1 = 9

Fuck it's quiet with out Spine-Snapper and Svensson around.
>>
>>21314443
Indeed it is. But the tribe is much less conquest oriented and more likely to make friends and not alienate allies lol.
>>
>>21314133
> Could it be? Dreams of grandeur? Oh glorious day! The tribe is looking towards such things as wonders of the world! I-I have something in my eye...

Several of the tribe head upriver in rafts, towards the marshland to gather the heavy clay there. Un-fortunately, they come back with a trifling amount. The cold winter has frozen the wet ground almost solid! Everyone involved comes back cold, exhausted and frustrated from the fruitless experience. Not only that; several of the tribe's wooden and copper tools they were using to try to dig the clay were broken completely in the attempt!

Using what little clay they have to hand, the elders quickly discover that clay tablets can indeed be used for writing! The wooden sticks they use for it however are clumsy and break too easily. It's possible, but certainly not easy.

The lookouts are instructed to keep a keen eye out for Mikuhla. Everyone is expecting him to return soon and the added watch helps keep spirits high.
>>
>>21314443
Fuck, it is... I'm not sure I like this. DISASTER TIME!

I figured that would be the case, but it got the turn moving. I've got plans for spring. Oh-ho-ho big plans for spring!
>>
>>21314488
As winter enters its final moon and begins to draw to a close, a blizzard almost as fierce as the year before engulfs the village! For three days and nights it rages, too strong to even let people set foot outside their huts! Not only that, when it is over, the air outside is thick and oppressive. No-one knows what has happened, but everyone is put on edge, as though something terrible is hanging overhead.

> Correction, by the way. Morale is at 4, not 6.

A) Send out scouts (specify direction)

C) Gather resources (not food)

I) Ask the elders for advice (No cost)
>>
Rolled 2, 4, 5 = 11

>>21314532

Christ, no quarter given, huh?

My only advice is this:

E) A Cultural Event in which the people of the tribe come together in a show of solidarity against the rigors of the winter, have the hearthfires high and the music play, we must stand defiant against that which would destroy us all.
>>
>>21314532
H) Call out to the snow goddess. No doubt she;s got something to do with this. We need to put on our game faces and get ready to do some serious comforting. Invite her to the festival.
G) Invite the big tribe downriver to our festival. Make it a big bonfire as a way to "ward off the cold as friends and allies." If that doesn't get them going I don't know what will.
E) Festival. We've put too many turns into organizing this to go back on it. Plus, we need the morale. And who knows? A big bonfire might be just what we need. Might even attract that fire spirit.
>>
>>21314566

That but also this:

H. Contact the Gods, specifically Hrunti though none should be neglected for advice, and see if they knows what's up this time. Dammit bad stuff always has to happen.
>>
>>21314600
Oh, well dur, it is still winter so we can call on her. I feel silly. But either way, the only one I'm putting forward is trying to contact the gods. Whichever one can help.
>>
I really hope this even doesn't turn out to be a make or break for the tribe. Seems like a bad way to go out with only three people casting votes tonight.
>>
>>21314600
The prayers to Khoine... Go un-answered. The goddess of snow singularly fails to appear before the tribe, even with her newly finished shrine! The goddess's failure to appear has everyone worried. Has she been offended in some way? Maybe something happened to her? Has she chosen not to favour the village any more? Who knows?

> Going to give you a chance to re-consider. Actions voted on NOW take place in moon 12 (winter). NEXT moon is spring, when the festival was going to take place.
>>
>>21315105
Alright... Well then let's wait until the next moon to hold the festival I guess. If the snows not down by then, we can try to summon the flame spirit again, or talk to our pantheon and see if they can shed some light on the situation.
>>
>>21315105
Nope, nope. Not going to jump the gun on the festival. It will happen in month 1.

For lack of anything else that comes to mind, I guess I just want to pass this turn. We don't really have a lot of options.
>>
>>21315145
Now hold on, we lost some tools last turn, so we could go collect some copper. So that's C, we could also use this turn to try and craft a bunch of necklaces to give to the tribal leaders at the festival. So F, and also, we could H) prepare song-stories about some of our more epic events, like Trym's defeat of the white wolf, the battle god, and the lion tribe's champion. The last one might be a bit iffy, might offend the lion tribe, but they seem pretty accepting of the whole thing so, I'll leave that decision to you guys. What do you think?
>>
>>21315223
Good point. Seconded.
>>
Rolled 6, 4, 4 = 14

>>21315223
Thirded.
>>
>>21315223
To replace the broken tools and in preparation for the festival coming in the spring, the tribe sends out miners to retrieve copper from across the river. Mining in the winter is hard and miserable work, but thankfully, copper is easy enough to come by and the miners find shelter in the Lion Tribe village, in exchange for a small amount of the mined ore. They return without too much trouble and soon the tribe's craftsmen have replaced the damaged tools, as well as making necklaces of bone ivory and copper, to give to the visiting tribal elders in the spring.

Some members of the tribe take the time to work on songs in glory of Trym Wolfsbane and his victory over Hrunti, the White Wolf. Such things are sure to impress the tribes who take glory from great feats of strength, but more peaceful tribes might not take so well to them!

Well it's a gamble, but I'm sure with some careful diplomacy we have a good chance of pleasing everyone.
>>
>>21315425
Also, do you think it would reflect too badly on us if we asked the tribes to bring some of their food. It could promote sharing and goodwill. Or something cheesy like that.
>>
B. Go catch some fish, steal birds eggs, whatever we can find and cook.
B. Some fruits and berries are ready to be picked in the spring so lets hit that fruit tree glade and see what's what.
E. Spring Festival with the other tribes.

>>21315462

It actually might. We invited them so it's our job to show hospitality but that is a grand idea. Share recipes and tribal delicacies and such. Plus it would give us new sources of food that we probably haven't explored yet.
>>
Rolled 2, 1, 6 = 9

>>21315587
Seconding this, both the action and the stance on the mooching.
>>
>>21315587
Third. And next turn we can finally go catch deer, if all goes well, of course.
>>
>>21315587
And we'll plant the crops next turn and get the elders to look into irrigation or actually putting the seeds into the ground instead of just tossing them all willy-nilly
>>
>>21315425
Oh, hey Britfag, how many cattle do we have now? Last I recall it was 4 cows and two bulls and now that it's spring supposedly they should have another couple of calves I guess.

If they do, we could totally butcher the shit out of one and cook it.
>>
>>21315661
I think I broke the gm, guys. Many apologies.
>>
>>21315661
Eh? No, the current total stands at 4 cows, one bull and one calf (male). Sorry; should I start giving updates when the herd size changes too?

The tribe sets to work. Given the emergency state of the food supply, everyone is out, searching for food anywhere they can. Some people gather spring fruits in the forest, some steal bird eggs, others fish. A few bring back deer from the herd. It seems it's grown just a little, though not by too much; there's still a danger of over-hunting it. Fish are caught and smoked too. Overall, the tribe lays in a substantial amount, though most of it is set aside for the festival. Unluckily, the fruits gathered last fall did not keep particularly well, most either being eaten, or rotting during the winter, their soft flesh proving a disadvantage, as well as a delicacy.

The time of the spring festival finally arrives however! Several elders from the River Brothers arrive to celebrate, bringing with them several animal carcasses, ready for butchering, as well as their own forest fruits. The Lion Tribe likewise shows up, bringing with them a pair of cattle, ready to be slaughtered and roasted whole; a display of great extravagance on their part. Just as the festivities are about to begin however, the lookout calls that another party has been sighted coming upriver in several large canoes, much larger than anything the Wolfsbane have!
>>
>>21316053
> Still got a little time... Might as well have one last choice before bed.

How will the tribe respond to this unplanned intrusion?
A) Get ready to greet these newcomers warmly and openly. Rina is here for the festival, so she could be asked to translate.
B) Get ready to send them away. They weren't invited! Shoo!
C) Get ready to fight! The Wolfsbane will show the other tribes just how strong they are by repelling these invaders single-handed!
D) Rally the visitors! Repelling these strangers will take everyone fighting as one!
E) Other
>>
>>21316082
E) Check to see if we recognize them. I guessing it's the big tribe from down river, but it could be trouble. If it is the big tribe, then
A) Greetings, friends. We see that word of our festivities has reached even you. Feel free to join in, and share food and stories openly if you like. Eat, drink, and enjoy this merry event we are so happy to host. If you haven't yet met, there are two other tribes here who are allied with us, and trade with us frequently. We only wish to come together as friends this day, that we may learn and observe each others wisdom and culture. Please respect the peace, but feel free to have a good time. Once again, Welcome.
But if they're bad guys, then go with C) tell the other tribes that we will do our best to protect their citizens, it is our responsibility for hosting this event, and if they have any honor, and wish to join us, allow them.
>>
So six heads of cattle. I was right, I just assumed they'd have more this spring, lol. No worries. Because I remember we traded for 4 and then they had two more themselves.

Regardless

>>21316082
E. Send out a small delegation to find out why they are here first. No need to jump to any hasty conclusions.

"Greetings river travelers, we welcome you to our village but we must admit your arrival took us a bit unaware. If you come in peace and wish to break meat with us we would be happy to have you in our village and introduce you to our other guests."

Then if they kill the delegation, we know whats up and then it's battle time.

Pic entirely related.
>>
> I can't wait to see their faces when they get back. Peace and reasoning actually won out for once without having to spend an entire thread fighting for it!

The majority of the tribe stays back, preparing for the worst, while a small group is sent out, downriver, with instructions to hail the strangers and attempt to see if they are friendly. When the scouts encounter the large canoes, they immediately recognise that, until the hollow-log affairs the tribe has, these are very different; frames of light wood, with birch and animal skins stretched over them. They people riding in them are strange too. Some wear skins and furs, much like the tribe is used to, but some others wear clothes only seen once before: The kind of material worn by goddess of love; Yeneth! Many of the canoes have baskets, sacks and pots in them and while their occupants are armed, it doesn't look at all like a war party. When the scouts hail them, the people in the canoes shout back. It is hard to tell, but it sounds like they try two different languages. When both fail, they simply proceed onwards, some of them even taking up a song to keep time as they paddle.

They don't seem hostile, whoever they are. The ones wearing furs look like they are from the large village downstream, but the others are far stranger.
>>
>>21316565
Aaaand that's it. I'm at a loss! I guess I'll see you folks next time. Who could those mysterious persons in the canoes be? What could this mean for the tribe? I suppose you'll just have to come back next time to find out!

The next thread will be on Tuesday at 1630 EST. I hope to see you all then! Stay safe and have a good few days! Ta-ta!

> Holy Shit I wake up and the thread isn't dead? Might as well have some Q&A

How do I manage it? I don't know; I guess I just think how many people would be disappointed if I stopped? Plus, I majored in psychology, but I think sociology would have been more my thing. I've been a historyfag ever since I was five years old, watching Time Team every weak on the TV. So these two combined keep me very interested in how things are going. Seeing everyone grow and develop, observing what kind of society people are creating and how technology grows and develops, seeing how the gods and magic influence things... It's all fascinating stuff for me.

As well as that, there's the ability to run something freeform, while still having rules to actually make it run smoothly is something I don't get very often. I'm really hoping I don't run out of ideas any time soon and it doesn't seem too likely I will! There may be a 'normal' year or two though. My only issue is a fear of saying 'yes' to the players too often. Progressing too fast is just unrealistic. Ah well.

You two should join in! There's always room for more in the tribe and I'd be really glad to see new players!
>>
>>21322430
I would, but I have my own quests to look after. Strangely after reading that i've found my motivations for running these games is much like your own. I die a little inside every time I fail to meet my player's expectations (and the ones I force on myself.)

sage'd to allow this poor thread to die.
