Approximately one year and eleven months ago, you were the Incubator of the Officio of Japan. You had complete control over a thousand Magical Girls, and thrice that in mundane manpower. Your revenue is through the roof, your output unparalleled, and you have enough available funds to start a war - or fund the construction of an off-shore R&D facility where people don't ask questions much. You are also looking into funding small microentreprenurial ventures in the city - those that have to do with print publications. You've heard how profitable they are.

This situation, while not optimal, is acceptable.
>>
>>21309791

But one of those things is a misnomer, however. Strictly speaking, your Officio isn't the only one established in Japan - although that's the way it should be, ideally. You were the one selected to leverage this particular piece of territory, after all; a selection, you've been assured, that had been made with your key competencies and scalable expertise in mind.

Such was your surprise, then, when you found out that two of your brothers had set up shop in the same country as you. You immediately confronted them about this slight, sensing some wires being crossed somewhere - and they were sufficiently contrite and apologetic enough that you realized that you didn't seem to mind that much about it.

All of you were still starting out, after all, and the assignment was a long one. There was no need to be greedy or territorial just yet - there would be enough time for them to move away and settle somewhere else when they have developed enough of a presence, made enough contracts. There would be enough prospects for everyone.

You left that meeting with their promises that they would not oppose you. This was reassuring - unlike some of your other kindred that had made clear of their animosity towards you even before the assignment began. Not that you took any of the threats they pulsed your way, of course. Dissenters always had a way of dissenting, and their puerile attempts of intimidation did not need dignifying with a response or even acknowledgement.
>>
>>21309798

"Will there be anything else, Kyuubey-san?"

This question is posed to you by none other than one of your best and brightest contracts, a blonde young woman by the name of Tomoe Mami. She'd just placed a platter full of pancakes on your desk, in front of you, and you could already taste the soft fluffiness of them melting in your mouth, the sweetness of the syrup tickling your tongue.

...Sanbey is right. You've gotten soft. Frail. Complacent. Weak. YOu were never like this, never this eager to partake in such base pleasures.

You let Mami Tomoe wait as you take up the supplied fork and knife with your available appendages and inexpertly cut yourself a piece of the uppermost pancake, the one with the heart-shaped piece of butter contentedly melting in its pool syrup. You place the small morsel in your mouth, chew for a moment, and then swallow.

Sanbey can choke on his self-righteousness and drown in the abyss.

You remark after a moment, careful to keep your voice neutral as always, that these were in fact passable pancakes. Tomoe smiles at this, taking it as the compliment that it is, and visibly reddens with pleasure. She thanks you with a small curtsey, and you chew on another mouthful as you reach over and tap at your keyboard.

Displaying the picture of Girl A on the monitor array behind you.

You've no need to look to confirm it, of course. You'd looked at the picture itself longer than you are inclined to admit.

The mysterious Girl A. The Magical Girl that Mami rescued.

"Stay for a moment, Mami Tomoe. I want to ask you about this girl."

The blonde young woman nods, the pleased smile on her lips turning into a polite, if guarded one. "Yes, of course, Kyuubey-san. Whatever you need."

Such dedication. Such loyalty.

What do you ask her about Girl A?

Mami shakes her head at your questions. "My apologies, Kyuubey-san, but so far she's been a bit...well, how can I say this?" She spreads both gloved hands before her in a seemingly apologetic gesture of contrition. "We've tried nearly everything to make her talk, but so far we haven't gotten a word out of the girl." A moment's hesitation, before she continues.

"If I may be so bold as to posit my own opinion in the matter, here, I doubt she has anything to tell us, even if we try our usual methods here, Kyuubey-san. Whenever she looks at me, her eyes just look so...empty. So lonely." A mournful expression briefly flashes across her face. "It's as if someone tore her very soul out and wrung it dry of everything that she was."

You carefully manipulate the metal utensils Mami had so kindly supplied you with your breakfast to deposit another forkful of syrup-soaked pancake into your mouth. Well, in so many words, that's what a contract does - but it never affects a contractee to that extent. Crystallizing someone's soul into a gem the size of a bauble does not, usually, overwrite their personalities or drastically alter their outlook. When it does happen, it's usually a faulty contract, an error in the crystallization process somewhere. That kind of mistake is grievous to one's record. Incubators have been executed - through atmospheric immolation - for much less.

You ask her, then, if Girl A might be any worth to the Officio, in her current. Mami nods before you could even finish your sentence.

>Kharnak is burning
>>
>>21310489

"I have no doubt about this, Kyuubey-san." Mami Tomoe steps forward, her voice the clearest you've heard it in months. "Granted, I haven't seen her in action, she's still a bit bedridden - but please believe me when I say that she would make a stellar addition to the payroll. Give me...give me at least a month with her, and I'll get her back into operation readiness. She'll be one of the best, that I can assure you."

Well, this is rather a surprise. Mami Tomoe certainly has a kind word for everyone she meets, but this is far and beyond what you've heard from her. What gives her such confidence in her ward, then, you ask?

It's here that she falters. "I...I can't rightly say, Kyuubey-san. I just know it. I suppose you could call it intuition, but..." She glances down briefly at her feet, as if trying to seek the answers from the polished marble tile of your Office. "I...I believe that I was meant to find her there, in Charlotte's barrier, and rescue her. I believe I was meant to rescue her and bring her here, Kyuubey-san. I can't explain it, but it just feels that way. And I know she'll be a key addition to this Officio, if only you'll let her."

This of course is a conundrum. You've always made it a point to...choose your contracts carefully, as it were. You are all too familiar about what sort of damage an unstable contractee could do, with an Incubator's wish fueling her...more destructive tendencies. You have enough trouble with some of the Eversors already, and they were your own contracts. A mysterious girl with her contract made by an unknown Incubator, well, that's just pushing the envelope, now.

You chew and swallow another mouthful of pancake. By this time, you've eaten through nearly a fourth of your breakfast, and usually you'd already be satisfied. That would have been true, had your breakfast come from its typical source. But this was different, obviously. No Culexus, not even your Warmaster's Aide, could make pancakes as perfect as these. As heavenly as these.

You close your eyes briefly, before opening them again.

Soft. Complacent. Weak.

Someday, you will make your brother regret saying that to your face.

Perhaps a hostile takeover of his Officio's assets and contracts in the near future? Maybe. It has potential, at least.

In any case, Mami Tomoe seems to be awaiting a response from you, regarding your decision with Girl A.

How do you respond?
>>
Is this happening before of after 'Girl A' shot QB in the face? I'm guessing before.

>>21310662

There's no harm in bringing her in and putting her on some simpler mission to see how she does. I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to put her out of action should she prove more trouble than she's worth.

You polish off the fifth pancake on the pile, before turning back slightly to consider the dour expression on Girl A's mugshot. Now that Mami had mentioned it, Girl A's eyes do look empty, as if she had been hollowed out from inside. Her dark purple eyes, dull and lifeless, stared back at you from your array of monitors, as if coldly considering what to do with you. It's quite the haunted expression, and you turn away to face an expectant Mami Tomoe trying to appear calm.

You give her your decision, and it's one that brings that bright smile back on her face. If she feels so strongly about Girl A and her ability to bring value to the Officio, then there really is no reason for you to reject her offer. Of course, thef act remains that Mami Tomoe would have to take responsibility for Girl A. That means training her and making sure that she does not give rise to...incidents of inconvenience.

"O-of course, Kyuubey-san. I understand. One month, and I take full responsibility for her. I will not disappoint you." Another curtsey, executed to perfection, and you nod at her in finality.

[1/2]
>>
>>21311226

That is... understandable and forgivable.
>>
>>21311246

Maybe it wasn't the smartest decision you'd made, at the time. But at the very least, you saw that this was quiet important to Mami Tomoe - and you denying her of her request would have resulted in demoralization. Something you'd like a little less of here in the Officio. Happy Magical Girls made for Efficient Magical Girls, after all, even if it dampened their output some.

"If...if you'd like, Kyuubey-san, I can take you to her room in the medical floor, at least, where she's recovering." Mami pipes up suddenly. "For you to see her, and for her to thank you properly."

Another surprise. You've always considered your job to be a thankless one, although not for lack of gratitude. You just didn't think that this was worth thanking.

You accept the offer. You have a few contracts lined up to be made today, as well as some administrative tasks to take care of - but it's not like you can't spare the time. You have one of your agents looking after one of your prospects this very moment, in any case, so it won't be too much of a hassle.

In any case, Mami Tomoe was kind enough to carry you in her arms after you've finished off your breakfast - another flush of pleasure coloring her cheeks as she makes note of how eagerly you've devoured her pan-made creations. You tell her that it's simply because you worked through the previous night - and this earns you a rather affectionate pat on the head, along with the mild admonishment that you should take care of yourself better. Officio Incubators are, after all, the lynchpin of the organization they lead. Without them, they would come apart, and all too easily.

You refrain from telling her that she'd just unknowingly recited the purpose of a Warmaster. With your belly full of pancakes and your form nestled quite comfortably in a warm pair of arms, resting against an even warmer and softer bosom encased in Magical Girl costume fabric - you don't trust yourself to say much of anything at all.

Base pleasures. Sanbey can just go and throw himself out of an airlock for all you care.

A brief elevator ride and a walk through the rest of the medical floor later - the Magical Girls passing you by stopping in their tracks and saluting in your direction - and you come upon the door leading to the very last recovery room in this particular area, with a blue-haired Eversor staying guard outside. She immediately snaps to attention as both you and Mami Tomoe approach - and you recognize her immediately as Miki Sayaka, one of your top Eversors and Kirika Kure's own prodigy. She rips off a picture-perfect, textbook salute as Mami stops in front of her, and you note just how...well, immaculate her Soul Gem is. It's bright enough that it's blinding.

"Good morning, Sayaka-chan." Mami smiles at this blue-haired Eversor that you personally contracted - a rather messy affair, really, and involved a young man of some sort that you somehow cannot remember - and you blink as Sayaka's cheeks redden despite the formally-stiff expression of almost fanatical zeal on her face, making it look quite...well, childlike. "We're here to visit Girl A. Personal request by the Incubator. Can you show us in?"

"O-of course!" Another salute, Sayaka's eager voice trembling just the slightest bit as she turns around smartly on her heel and giving the doorknob a neat twist. She pushes the door open, before turning around once more and stepping to the side. "The prisoner has been relatively quiet for the past eight hours, Mami-san, Kyuubey. The nurses say that she's still heavily sedated for the time being." It's then that a brief expression of sympathy crosses her features. "She's...well, she's got a lot of healing to do. They say we can only do so much with magic."

[2/3]
>>
>>21312118

You nod at this, silently, and it's then that you watch Mami shake her head. "No, Sayaka-chan. She's not our prisoner." The blonde says carefully, still with a smile on he face. "We talked about this. We rescued her. Even if she seems to be contracted by someone else, a fellow Magical Girl--"

"--is an enemy until it's proven that she's one of us," Sayaka smartly cuts in, looking at you for approval. Mami clicks her tongue at this, and the blue-haired Eversor smiles awkwardly. "Y-yeah, yeah, I know it sounds a bit extreme. B-but that's what Kyuubey taught us. It's in the Magical Girl Primer, isn't it?"

"Yes," you say after a moment, blinking. Of course it was. You wrote it yourself. How could you forget? It's practically at one of the very first pages. Not the exact line, of course, but the thought was there. But even with your confirmation, Mami seems to be adamant. "I get what you're coming from, Sayaka-chan, but she isn't our prisoner. We rescued her, and even if we're not working under the same Incubator, we shouldn't be suspicious of each other to that extent." A smile. "After all, when it comes down to it, Magical Girls have almost the same kind of wish, don't they?"

No, no they do not, you want to reply. But you hold your tongue, listening to them argue instead. It was more interesting that way. It always was.

It's after a few moments more of spirited debate does Sayaka finally cave in, grumbling slightly but still obviously in high spirits as she leads you and Mami into the room. Inside is Girl A - off her ventilator, but still hooked up to a few machines to keep track of her vital signs. An IV bag drip is dripping designer painkillers into her bloodstream, and you wonder slightly if that's going to impair the communication process some.

Well, one way to find out. You turn to Sayaka and ask her about Girl A's Soul Gem.

Well Kyousuke exists.
>>
>>21312118
>you note just how...well, immaculate her Soul Gem is. It's bright enough that it's blinding.
Did Kyouko have anything to do with this? I think a previous thread (or was it one of the fanfics, I can't remember) had Kyouko mentioning how she always saves at least one charge in every Grief Seed for our favorite blue-haired swordswoman.
>>
>>21312284

seems like that canon was fired, Kyouko is great!
>>
>>21312142

The blue-haired Eversor produces it without any flair or preamble, the brass-gilded Soul Gem manifests on top of her gloved palm with a faint glow of purple light. It's...it could stand to have a few Soul Gems, to be honest, you're not liking how dirty it looks. But for someone who's been stuck inside a Witch's Barrier for who knows how long - it looks like the corruption's more along the lines of routine magic usage than anything else. A few Soul Gems could clear it up, and easily. You make a note to have some delivered here before too long - and it's only then that you hop out of your comfortable perch to land at the foot of Girl A's bed. Sayaka places the Soul Gem in front of you with an almost reverent care - before stepping back and drawing a sword from the depths of her cake.

"Sayaka-chan...?" Mami starts to ask, her eyes widening, but Sayaka smiles at her, before shrugging. "J-just in case, you know? It can't hurt to be prepared."

Yes. It definitely can't hurt.

You reach over and briefly pulse a small amount of magic into Girl A's Soul Gem. Not enough to hurt, but simply enough to get her awake, to jolt her out of consciousness.

It works, and Girl A snaps awake with a whimper - and her eyes flutter open just as you turn back towards her. A greeting and a question poised over your lips.

You were not expecting her to scream bloody murder at you, before aiming what appears to be a large caliber firearm at your face.

"Wait a moment--" You try to say, but you find it hard to say anything at all.

Having your skull blown apart in a thunderous report tends to do that.

Well I was one of the fanfics.

Its either that Kyoko has been giving her grief seeds or that Sayaka has learned better ways of combat then turning off her pain receptors and hitting things with her sword until they fall over.

You open your eyes again, and this time you find yourself waking up in, of all places, Kyoko Sakura's lap, the girl also snoozing on a park bench, head tilted back, mouth open. Untransformed, of all things. Completely vulnerable. She was supposed to be watching your first prospect of the day!

Immediately, something on the somnolent girl's person starts to ring. Her cellphone in her shorts pocket, most probably.

You close your eyes briefly, and try to shake off the disorienting feeling of being abruptly murdered, forcing your consciousness to snap to the nearest available body.

What do you do?

>>
We need more SCIENCE to make sure it is not an one-off event. Girl A could just be waking up from a nightmare. Let's do that again.
>>
>>21312369
Wake Kyouko and tell her to stop sleeping on the job.

Since Girl A is probably getting a good scolding from Mami we should see about getting back to our business for the day.

Nah. It works like with the Agents from Matrix. When a Coobie dies, the nearest ordinary housecat gets turned into a Coobie instead. Keep in mind that Incubators have been around since forever. They have modificated the plain housecat to be a raplacement vessel for any Incubator in range if something happens to the current host.

Thats right. Your cat might turn into a Coobie anytime.

After dealing with Kyoko, we should head back and try talking with girl A again, perhaps with a bit more care. Try finding more about her apparent power to summon firearms from nowhere, as I assume people didn't let her into the place carrying that.

Also talk to her about not shooting us in the face. That's kind of inconvenient.
