And, as always, I'm on IRC.

To say the Pearl Harbor bases are anarchy is to understate the level of chaos, you think somewhat sardonically. Not the kind of chaos that would ensue from an attack- no aircraft scrambling madly to meet an incoming attack wave, no ships sortieing heroically from the harbor, undermanned and hopelessly outgunned, no soldiers firing into the air with small arms in a brave, but ultimately useless show of defiance.

Instead, it's the kind of special chaos only a military base on alert can generate- thousands of soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines, all trying to get somewhere in a hurry, so they can wait for whatever it is they're after.

You're well acquainted with the concept of hurry-up-and-wait, but, fortunately, being in a witch squadron- and being the CINCPAC's chosen champion, apparently, has benefits. A scant few hours have passed since your promotion, and you find yourself walking around your 'cat as she's prepped for a transport flight home- one you won't be flying.

1/2
>>
A marine C-20G, brought down from Kaneohe bay, sits on the ramp next to your bird, dull and unlovely next to your sleek fighter. You'll share the transport with a few last-second officer transfers off the island- some destined for units in the states, others being shuffled off to places where they can't get people killed. A lucky pair are on their way to the pentagon for purposes unknown.

As it is, you're fortunate- the vast majority of the MAC flights into and out of the continental US are headed through McChord AFB- about an hour from Boeing field. Nixon's hurried orders to you have since been amended- with no small amount of swearing on his part- to have you pick up the other tomcat prototype from there and then stage out of Elmendorf air force base, in Alaska.

“It's a temporary fix, son.” Nixon says, walking with you as you bid your bird goodbye. “We're re-deploying a lot of assets there while we try and sort out who goes where and how they're gonna get there. You shouldn't be in Alaska long.”

[x] No worries sir, just hope I can do some good

“No worries sir. I just hope I can do some good.” You say as he steers you towards the marine VIP transport.

“You will, son. Right now SHAEF is screaming for everything we can send- and with the Japs declaring neutrality- there's going to be a hell of a fight to keep anything in the pacific.” Nixon shrugs. “Right now, that means parking 'em in the Alaskan bases and hoping the reds don't actually invade Alaska and tie 'em up there.”

you can't help but shrug a little at the suggestion. “Sounds like there's a hell of a lot of troops and planes up there, sir. They'd be in for a hell of a fight.”

Nixon grins. “That's the spirit, son. Listen. Once you get to Elemndorf, your squadron's gonna be seconded to the air force hippies up there for the time being. Shouldn't be too bad, but they're used to air force pilots and F-15s, not navy pilots and whatever superjet those dwarves at Boeing throw at you next. Don't disappoint me, son.”

1/2
>>
“Wouldn't dream of it sir.” You say, headed up the ladder into the transport.

“Outstanding, son. I'll be in contact. Have a nice flight!”

The ramp quickly retracts, and the marine loadmaster does a truncated safety briefing- long story short, of the bird goes down, scramble for an exit and hope you can tread water. “In the event of a water landing, hope there's no sharks” isn't what you really class as 'encouraging'

The flight is actually going to be relatively short- only three or four hours, all told. You'll spend a night at the Boeing plant in Seattle, then you're off to Alaska. But for now, you're stuck in a flying limo for the next few hours with your squadron and several officers of several different paygrades. The insignia on your flight jacket- and your not-so-secret status as Nixon's protegee should cover you from any harassment, so how do you want to spend the flight?

B-2 wasn't operational in 89 (I mean, first flight was in july of that year, and I doubt they're going to have more than one or two flight-ready prototypes sitting around), and given the density of soviet air defense, the F117 wouldn't do very well.

Cruise missiles on the other hand, would probably do all kinds of damage.

Valkyrie strikers and Valkyrie witches. Their only training mission is simple, operation Ragnarok, a counter-strike to destroy Soviet infrastructure and command posts, through deep heavy bombardment. This must go on to ensure that later heavy bombers are able to penetrate and destroy any remaining units.

[x] Try and get a more complete picture of the situation from ice!
[x] Talk to the witches!

“So what's the deal, Ice? They tell you anything about what's going on?” You ask, stifling a yawn.

She nods. “From what anybody can tell, a pair of Polish drakens committed a border violation, which is pretty routine. But the Belorussian air defense forces shot the shit out of them, which isn't routine, and called it an act of war.” She sighs. “Just an excuse, really. They had armored divisions on the border ready to go, apparently.”

“Jeeesus.” You breathe, thinking of your brothers.

Ice sighs again. “The thing is, right now, it's pure conventional. No witches from the soviet side. They've asked European and American UNEDF personnel to be removed from Megalith and replaced by neutral officers, but other than that, they're still supporting the treaty too.”

Katya nods at this. “Not surprising. Supreme command never liked witches, is probably afraid to use them for fear they'd defect.” She laughs. “Too hard to keep watch on both enemy and your own witches!”

“So where would they all go?” Goose asks, quietly.

1/2
>>
Katya shrugs a little. “Far east command, probably. Lumped in with garrison forces, maybe regional commands. First-rate commands witches always come from Moscow academy.” She shudders. “Robots. Not human after that place. “

“It's that bad?” Goose asks, sounding distraught.

Katya nods. “Was offered to have education there, grandmother insisted I attend the same academy she did. Had a good friend who went to Moscow academy.” Her eyes focus somewhere far in the distance, remembering. “Svetlana. She was... never the same, after that. Very... idealistic.”

“Brainwashed.” you supply.

Katya nods. “Yes. Still her, but... not. I am sorry, my English is not good enough to describe it. Colder, somehow. More distant.”

“Speaking of cold.” Slider mutters, grabbing your jacket and laying it over her lap. “Alaska is going to fucking suck.”

Katya laughs. “Is not so bad!” She grins. “I can teach you how we stay warm in Siberia!”

A pair of marine officers lean in, clearly interested.

[x] what, with hot tea next to a fireplace while playing chess?

“What” you say dryly. “By sitting in front of a fireplace, sipping hot tea and playing chess?”

Katya grins at you. “You ruined the joke! No matter. Yes.”

Disappointed, the marines lean back.

“Though.” Katya says, smiling at you, “There are other ways to keep warm in front of a fire, da?”

the marines lean back in....

“Like playing music on piano.” She finishes, glancing sideways at them.

Merlin giggles at the marine's disappointed reactions. “You play the piano?” she asks.

Katya nods. “Bit of a family thing, Grandmother taught me.”

You smile. “My grandma always said I had an artistic streak, but I never followed it up. Kind of one of my big regrets.” You shake your head. “Of course, grandma also said men had no place in the sky, and we should leave that for the witches, so take it for what it's worth.”

Katya looks confused. “She did? Did she not fight in the war?”

1/2
>>
>>21259950

From what Katya said, the Soviet Air Forces don't trust Witches much. Katya mentioned that most Witch squadrons in the VVS are the exact opposite of Franks: lots of pilots and very few Witches.
>>
You shake your head. “No, she did- she was in the CBI theater, but there weren't a lot of fighter pilots there, so she didn't really see the same things as, say, a witch in Europe.”

“Ah, I see.” Katya nods. “Grandmother was in europe- flew with many pilots. Was good friends with a night fighter pilot.”

She grins. “She always liked telling stories about him, how he saved her when she went down in the english channel, that kind of thing. What kind of pilot he was.”

She looks at you. “His crew was less cute than yours though.”

Merlin blushes.

The small talk continues throughout the flight- Merlin's nervous, but excited about the prospect of whatever new things her dad's team has managed to cram into and on the F-14. Ice is.... Ice, and buried in what few reports there are. Slider snoozes quietly in her chair, while Maverick and Goose take turns with enemy ID book, quizzing each other on target silhouettes. Merlin is playing- ironically enough- tetris and Katya's managed to fall asleep with her head on your shoulder.

The landing is easy, though you slide a bit on the rain-soaked runway. Merlin's dad meets you on the pad with an umbrella out. You note he's still wearing cargo shorts and a Hawaiian shirt, even in this miserable weather.

So is this a crossover with SWQ or its own thing? Did the Neuroi/Martian invasion occur or did we have WW2 with witches?

[x] Introduce Dr.Wells to Katya

Despite the rain, and the cold, you have to grin at Merlin's dad.

“Good to see you sir!” You have to yell to be heard above the jets as you guide Merlin and Katya under the umbrella, leaving no space for yourself.

“Good to see you too Frank! Call me Tom, please! “ He yells back. “How was the flight?”

“Good enough, si... Tom! Here, lemme introduce you to our new wingmate.” You end up yelling as you walk inside garage with a parked Boeing company sedan sitting on the concrete, driver lounging disinterested against the hood.

“Dr. Wells, this is Katya... wait, how do you pronounce your last name?” You say, trying to not stumble over it again. The ONI spooks kept doing it when they talked to her, and it's apparently a sore issue.

“Litvyak. Katya Litvyak.” she says quietly, huddling closer to you.

“Ok then! Katya, this is Dr. Thomas Wells- Merlin's dad and the guy who designed the fighter I was driving when we saved your bacon.”

Tom Chuckles. “Well, parts of it, anyway. You're going to do backflips when you see the new model. “Course, our guys want to pick your brains, too. Maybe get a few publicity shots with you, since you're a big hero now and all.”

“Well, since it's you who's asking, Tom...” you say, and he grins. “Glad to hear it! You should have heard the shop when the news about you and Samantha's heroics.”

Merlin smiles. “They were happy?”

Tom laughs, Reaching out to ruffle his daughter's hair. “Samantha, you two are heroes! The guys in the shop lost it! Hooting and hollering and setting off confetti bombs everywhere and spraying champagne like you two walked into Moscow! And raised the flag over the kremlin!”

Katya, still holding your right arm, smiles shyly. “I think... I think I feel the same as your workers.” She says to him.

I-5 is still a rain-slicked nightmare of traffic, as it always is. “Eight lanes.” Tom complains, shaking his head. “And all of them packed solid.”

He laughs. “Of course, of course! Speaking of, what did you think? Of the new tomcat, I mean.”

[x] It's a hell of a plane, that's for sure. Just wish it could go faster.

“It's a hell of a bird, Tom” You start, looking out the window at the crawling traffic and craning your neck to watch a civilian air liner overhead on it's landing approach to Sea-tac. “But she's slower than I expected- seems like the flight computer is throttling the hell out of her powerplants.”

Thomas nods. “It was a design limitation, I'm afraid. Remember that one was rebuilt from your old B model- the airframe just wasn't up to it. This one is a new build, there's a few things different. See, the problem with the one you had was mostly structural- those engines would have been able to push you to near mach 3, we think, but the airframe just isn't capable of handling it.”

You nod, following along and knowing better than to interrupt.

“We worked pretty closely with some guys from the Hanford reservation, on materials and such. They helped us out with high-heat alloys, so the new one is capable of mach 2.8 according to the computer simulations. We also added a pair of overwing hardpoints like on that Anglo strike fighter, what is it, the jaguar?”

“SEPECAT Jaguar?” you ask, kind of confused. Tom nods.

“That's the one! It actually worked out that having missiles there improved that thing's performance, if I remember correctly, though in our case, that's hard to do. But wind-tunnel and computers don't show any loss of performance, and we figured you'd like a another pair of missiles anyway. We were thinking about adding an additional pair of swivel hardpoints under the wings, but we didn't because they'd force a pretty big loss of roll rate. We also swapped out the old wing glove pylon mounts for a pair of standardized, plumbed, points, so we can put multiple ejector racks on there now. Went through and made that change for all the weapons stations other than the overwing points. We deleted two stations in the middle, between the nacelles, and made the other two centerline points- with multiple ejector racks, you won't even notice a difference.”

“Sounds impressive, Tom.” You say, slightly awed as your brain works to process exactly how much shit that goes boom you can now loft. All signs currently point to 'Lots'.

>>
“Radar's a brand new set from raethon, newest stuff, they call it AESA, but I think Samantha's probably going to be very happy when she sees it.”

He grins again. “And we increased her range, swapped out the traditional chaff/flares for Tactical air launched decoys, and found room for a pair of towed decoys.”

“Good lord, sir. This thing sounds like it could outfly and out fight god and all his angels.” You say, now completely awed.

Tom laughs as you pull up to the gates of the Boeing plant. Inside, a the dark shape of your new cat sits next to a different fighter.

“Guess you'll have to see, Frank.” he says, stepping out of the car.

I don't see much room for improvement on this one. We're already approaching 'carrier-launch capable F-22 with a back seat' territory if having Merlin counts as being stealth.

It is the ultimate form of F-14, so I guess Grumman is dead since boeing is making it like OTL.

also drones.

This is our new plane now, we are literally the VF-0, all we need is a nuclear powerplant, and we VF-1.
>>
>>21262191
Easy, because it looked like shit and had advanced tech that was shit. Boeing cannot make manned next gen fighters, and this is simply Boeing CONSUMING Grumman's soul.

Boeing should stick to drones, can't beat them etc. (or making upgrades to existing technology!)
>>
>>21262211
I remember in one of the earlier games you could, not sure if that was a one level thing or not. Still doesn't change the fact the very best planes are sweetdiculously over the top broken.

in AH, the best plane is a DLC plane designed by Shoji Kawamori, guy who made the macross planes. Its a Shiden 2, with 6 air to air missiles, or air to ground missiles, and its... well its pretty much thrust vectoran VF-21 in AH, its fun to fly in free mode.

If it looks stupid, but it works better than the competition, then in theory it should win.

[x] Go look over the fighter! I wanna see this in person!

You fairly leap out of the car, anxious to see your new aircraft. Merlin's right behind you, and Tom and Katya follow, amused at you two's antics.

There's several other significant changes to the aircraft- the gun has been moved to the centerline, just under the radar, instead of offset- and is now a 4 barrel 25mm weapon- the brand new GAU-22/A- instead of the old M61. Loading from a pair of bins, she's able to handle different kinds of cannon ammunition in one flight- a major step up from the 'one size fits all' policy you're used to.

Your front office looks the same- several large multifunction panels replacing the old 'steam gauge' dials of the previous versions. There's still several small improvements- the display toggles appear to have been replaced by touch screens, and.....

“Hey, wait, where's my HUD?” You say, confused.

Tom laughs up at you and tosses up a helmet. “We integrated it!” he says. “The wife's team worked on that for months- they finally sorted it out. Uses lasers to draw a picture on your eye. I helped test it, works great.”

He laughs again. “It's also necessary for the helmet mounted tracking and queuing systems for your weapons computer.”

[x] Helmet mounted what? Oh, god, I'm in love.

“Helmet mounted.... you guys are too good to me” You say, awed.

Tom smiles. “It would have been a waste to design new missiles with the capability otherwise.”

“New missiles?” you ask. He nods. “We finished up testing on the 152, it'll replace the phoenix. You can still use -54s, but the newer missile has a better kill probability against everything but flying barns. There's a second variant of the 152 that the wife's team built with more range- it's designed to knock out AWACS planes. We brought back a modified version of the 95, the old Agile program. You'd have to talk to the wife for the specifics, but you can use the HMD to have the missile acquire a lock after you launch it. It can also engage targets behind you- your RIO has the same HMD you do. Of course, for medium ranges, you still have the AMRAAM. Plus, she can haul all the air to mud stuff I'm told you pilots love.”

You laugh. “Someone may have misinformed you, Tom.” you say. “Hey Merlin! Whatcha think?”

“It's... it's beautiful.” She says. “I... it's... I... wow.”

“Impressive, huh?” You ask.

“... yes.” she says, breathlessly.

“You gonna be ok back there?” You ask, laughing.

“.... yes.” she says.

Tom's crew- and partner in crime, Dr. Jackson- aka 'Dr. Awesome'- Begin filing in.

“Hey, Frank, about that picture...” Tom says.

[x] No problem!

“No problem!” You climb down from the cockpit … and then have to climb right back up because, apparently, in all the joy, Merlin has forgotten how to walk.

Or stand, for that matter. In the end, you thank all your various gods she's still a15 year old kid, and weighs maybe 90 pounds soaking wet in a bathrobe with a squirrel in each pocket, and hoist her up on one shoulder.

Katya stands next to you, just under Merlin, and Tom and Dr. Jackson stand to either side. Their crew clusters around your little group, in front of your bird and the other one parked in the bay. Your all smile- most of them the fake smile of a photograph, but yours is entirely genuine. These guys just created the closest thing to a X-wing or a viper starfighter you've ever seen, and they requested YOU give it it's combat shakedown. That's a hell of a vote of confidence.

They only take a few pictures- far fewer, and far less professionally than you expected. Tom grins when you bring it up. “Well, really, they're just for us. We’ll probably put 'em up in the crew lounge, maybe in our offices, but they're not real PR pieces, you know?”
You nod, grateful.

Tom nods at you. “We've got a hotel set up for you, on the company dime. You've got to be tired- I'll have someone drive you over, if you want.”

“I'm not that beat” you say, trying to convince yourself as much as you are Tom. “What's the deal with that other bird?”

Tom looks over, and smiles. “That? That's our other proposed warbird for the ATF flyoff. It's really a generation or two beyond the ATF fighters though.”

“That tells me nothing.” you note.

He laughs. “I suppose not. We haven't even cleared it for flight testing, but it's a major joint project with Tesla industries and Marstech limited. That's the half-function prototype. As fighters go, it's probably the most advanced one that we'll ever build that's still stuck to the atmosphere. That's about all I can really say without having you sign a few hundred forms from legal.” He pauses.

“And the FBI” He adds.

“I think I'll pass on the paperwork.” you say with a tired laugh. Man, the past few days just seemed to catch up with you.

Tom repeats his offer- if you want, he'll have someone drive you and Katya to the hotel. Merlin can spend the night with her family, at least.

This time, your curiosity sated, you accept, gratefully.

The hotel is nice, upper-middle class, if not truly upper class. Great view of the bay.

And two separate rooms, if you want to.

[x] Door's open if you need to talk.

Your driver- one Dr. Sam “Awesome” Jackson- while loud, vulgar, and kind of abrasive, is a helpful guy, and you have a pretty high opinion of him by the end of the ride. He helps you check in- then tells you to take care of his fucking plane, goddamnit, and leaves.

He reminds you of your crew chief.

“How you holding up Katya?” You ask, riding the elevator up to your rooms. She sighs and shrugs.

“I am ok, I guess.” she says, tiredly. “Many things have changed in the past few days for me. Now I'm asked to go to war against my old country for a new one I know nothing about.” She sighs again. “but I do not mind. I'm not fighting for a country I know nothing about. I'm fighting for the people who've treated me so well since I left. You and Merlin, and Slider and Ice...” She trails off, and looks at you.

You shake your head. “You don't have to do this, Katya. No one will hold it against you if you don't.”

She looks away. “I know. I... I want to. I couldn't live with myself if I let you or comrade Merlin get hurt.”

You smile. “That means a lot to me. Hey... listen. My door's always open if you need to talk, ok?”

She grins. “just talk? How about warm up in third Siberian way?”

You laugh. “Get on with you, then. I'll see you in the morning, ok?”

“Goodnight, Frank.”

SUPERWEAPONS (clean)

So-called superweapons are mostly devices designed so that another invasion along the lines of the ones in the 40s can be effectively opposed before they gain a landhold.

There are several land based installations, each housing a different weapon.

MEGALITH- Considered the 'main' EDF superweapon, Megalith is a huge fortress complex located in the ural mountains. Housing the vast majority of the world's nuclear weapons, the megalith complex is capable of engaging and destroying multiple inbound craft easily. Three types of missiles are guided by several radar and a few extremely high-powered LDAR suites.
Megalith Prime (1)- Megalith prime is, quite possibly, the largest single projectile created by man to date. A multi-stage Rocket, it is designed to loft a single, massive warhead in the 200+ Mt range into space, then provide enough thrust to intercept a target at orbital speeds.
Megalith deuce (4)- Scaled down versions of Megalith prime. Due to it's extreme cost, Megalith prime proved unsuitable for mass deployment. The megalith deuce was intended to fill the same role at vastly reduced cost, but similarly proved unsuccessful. Their warheads are in the 100Mt+ range
monolith (36)- Monolith missiles provide megalith with it's major hitting power. Each weapon is armed with a 50Mt warhead.
>>
STONEHENGE- A massive battery of 120cm Dual-propellant cannons, Stonehenge, located in central France, covers the majority of Europe. Capable of engaging several threats at altitudes from 5000 meters to 120,000 meters plus at ranges of 500 to 1000 Km, Stonehenge is also capable of covering northern Africa.

EXCALIBUR- A huge Chemical laser, located near Berlin. Excalibur was initially meant for large scale deployment, but high cost and very high maintenance has precluded it from this role. It is also not as powerful as intended, and not considered cost-effective compared to Stonehenge or Megalith.

CHANDELIER- Built along the same lines as Stonehenge, Chandelier is a massive, 240cm Dual-propellant cannon constructed jointly by Canada and the USA. Designed to fire self-guided munitions packages containing several sub munitions, the weapon can reach great ranges- one test shot, fired for the purpose, impacted a test range just off the coast of Ireland. However, it cannot engage targets within 100km very easily, leading some analysts to fear it may be necessary for another similar cannon, or a stonehenge battery to be built elsewhere on the continent.

There is only one currently operational flying superweapon under the UNEDF treaty.

ARKBIRD- A joint Imperial Japanese-American project, the arkbird is a large orbital space plane equipped with a pair of long-range Laser weapons designed to engage orbital targets, and several orbit-to-surface kinetic weapons- 'rods from god'. The orbit to surface strike capability is considered mostly superfluous by analysts, who point out that any XT threat that would require such an attack on earth would have already destroyed the arkbird.

In addition to these, Russia operates two extremely large submarines- the Oktyabrskaya Revolyutsiya and the Poltava. While not explicitly considered superweapons by the UNEDF, these subs are considered the equal in destructive power of a US or IJN carrier battlegroup.

Russia also operates the Maxim Gorky- a large, flying aircraft carrier. Capable of handling a single squadron of aircraft, the Gorky is capable of self-defense with several batteries of long range Air to air missiles and attacks with multiple air-to-surface weapons.

Hopefully there are treaties in place declaring these to be used against aliums only, and hopefully everyone is following the treaties.

Except the subs and the flying carrier I guess, which apparently aren't covered.

Fucking Hrimfaxi

So...Mogagara One? That sounds less retarded than I expected it to.

The same treaty that provides for the UNEDF actually covers those weapons.

nukes are 100% covered by the treaty. all of megalith's weapons are built specifically for exoatmospheric work, and are designed to dud and safe if tampered with.

If you had a good enough crew of techs, it's possible to re-purpose them, but it'd be very difficult.

Megalith prime looks like this guy, right?

EUROPE (Clean)

In Europe, Poland is divided along east-west lines. Eastern Europe is folded into Belarus by the soviet union, deemed 'too small' to be an independent entity. As part of Belarus, it forms the major buffer zone between western poland and the USSR.

Western poles tend to refer to this occupied area as “east Poland” no one else really does.

Western Poland benefited from the return of the majority of their witches postwar, and as such, had a disproportionately magic-heavy military. While being a major NATO member, Poland is reliant mostly on imported weapons- their aircraft, notably, are imported from multiple NATO member states- the US, UK, and France, as well as SAAB fighters from Sweden.

Domestically, the poles produce their own tanks, and frequently heavily modify their imported aircraft to meet their needs- primarily focused around blunting a massive invasion from the east. Polish armor is considered some of the best in the world, and built heavily for crew survivability, as well as rapid repair of battle damage. However, it is extremely heavy, and has not been successfully exported.
>>
Polish witches are noted for a hate of the soviet government, shaped by stories emerging from defecting soviet witches. While it is unlikely that this hate carries over to soviet witches, no one is sure how the polish witch corps will respond to war.

Bulgarian and Romania remain monarchies, and Czechoslovakia is an independent NATO member-state with a powerful land army and an air force composed mostly of French and US imports.

In the European holdings of the soviet union, the border is marked by heavy military presence- either stationed on the border or a scant few miles back. In Poland, the border is one of the most heavily guarded in the world.

In Hungary, after a period without the monarchy, the Hapsburg family is restored to power. While not considered a major power in the area, Hungarian witches are some of the best equipped in the region, well-armed with imported US equipment.

and that's it from my desk this time. the Europe notes had to get considerably chopped down- spoilers were rife in them- but other than that, I hope that answers some questions.

If Romania and Bulgaria stayed monarchies (and Hungary reverted to one), it's probably still a monarchy too.

Whatever happened to Korea and China? Or JAPAN STRONG still keeping dirty Koreans down?
>>
Here's a thought and a question. Say there's a witch who through some action manages to do something that gets her thrown out of the service. What happens to her? What does a dishonorably discharged witch do after the service?
>>
>>21266327

I imagine she'd have to murder somebody or do something similarly heinous, in which case the usual route would be military prison, followed by shitty minimum wage jobs, or criminal activity (strike witches mafia?)
