90 KB
You are Sir Daniel, an old hero long dead, or were, until Erik the Lich resurrected you to be his helper.

Fortunately, Erik is the laziest man you've ever known, and only wants to read erotica. But you're a good servant, and want to help your master by clearing the ladder to the top.

Last time you departed from the Dragon's Mountain and made your way through the denser forests.

You found a small settlement, Mirwood.

You inquired about any jobs or quests that required a person such as yourself.

You took the first thing that sounded interesting to you, a quest to head out into the densest part of the forest and kill a creature living there.

You went in, and started experiencing oddities. Time wasn't running in the right direction, often looping over and over, this happened until divine intervention played a part and you beat the creature to death with a flaming corpse.

When you left the forest the world was not how you remembered it. Time had moved on without you.

A whole three years it would seem.

You returned to Gallowmere, and found that the town had grown, and they had erected a statue to their celebrity undead.

The Manor house also changed a little, Stumbles' and Rebecca's joint enterprise is up and running, along with Areal's "services".

Erik hardly noticed time move by, but immortality has that effect.

Your apprentices have added a third to their number, one of Stumbles' spawn. The one named after you, actually, SpiderDan.

You tested their skills in combat, and beat them senseless.

You decided that you would venture out to search for your Frenemies once again.

What do you do now?

You decide to ask people if they know where your Frenemies are.

You question Rebecca first as she's the closest and last one in contact.

>"I don't know the specifics, but I've heard stories from people wanting me t make cloths for them. The Knight guy, Mark, right? Heard that his order was calling in all their paladins and knights for a Crusade. Wizard woman? Probably one of those towers. Elf thing, went back home."

You go into the town for further details on their whereabouts.

>"'Ey, ain't you the statue man?"
One of them asks.
"Yes."
>"My dog pissed on you last week."
The man walks a way with a chuckle.

You ask about for the locations of your frenemies.

>"Don't know their names, but the guy's church took them to war, s'far as I know."

Mark has definitely been called away. If you find him, you'll most likely find the others.

>>21181674
>"No, seems they went underground after they heard about your murder list. They'll turn up soon, I expect."
Erik closes a book and adds it to his tower of finished hardbacks.

You go and talk with Areal.

"So, what've you been up to?"

>"Running the central hells. My Brother's gone away somewhere, and left me incharge. But I can't leave, because it seems I've entered a contract with you, but I don't know the details, or the type."

Areal seems a tad annoyed. Her desk is stacked with paper work and folders.

Areal has been around a looooon time, so like with Erik, she really doesn't take notice of these "short" periods of time.

It seems that this is a problem found only with thinkers and schemers.

You think a week is a long time, but that's because you're a warrior, and you live in the now, unlike Areal and Erik who are always thinking of tomorrow.

You go and gather your things for the journey and leave another note telling them where you're going.

But before you can leave your apprentices come rushing over in full gear.

>"Sir! Might we accompany you? See you in action and get some field training?"

What do you do?
>>
>>21181996
Yeah sure, they can come, but they have to do EVERYTHING we tell them. If we tell them to stay back, they stay back.

Continue down to the docks.
>>

Sure, as long as they're certain and they'd follow orders.
ALL orders. Including "retreat" and "leave me! save yourselves!"

"That sounds reasonable, but you do everything I tell you, obey every command, got it?"

>"Yes sir!"
Gary and Steve reply.

>"Yesh shir."
SpiderDan adds.

"Very well."

You and your three apprentices leave for the town, gear upon your backs and a goal in your mind.

You take the Sea Road to the docks, having the stop at night so the mortals can rest and sleep. Sometimes you even have to stop so they can eat, or do their dirty business. Oh, the perks of being a skeleton...

After a few days of rather boring travel, broken only by you suddenly creating a training session and forcing them to react, you arrive at the docks.

You take a look around, even they seem to have grown.

You see the same flag that flew upon Gerald's Dinty Dame now flying above the biggest building on the docks.

No one in the room moves, some even cower under work stations.

The awkward scene continues on for a little while until a door at the back open and you heard someone walking through.

>"I know that voice!"

Gerald the Green, though now without his sage armour, comes walking into the main foyer.

>"Daniel, how nice to see you, what can I do for the man who helped build my business empire?"

Gerald marches over, his moss green tailcoat flowing behind him.

Pick one with a glass bottom, if such a ship exists. It might be useful to commune with Hydra aboard such a vessel. If not, let the lads choose a vessel; they've been good boys, training in our absence after all this time. They've earned it.
Also, name it "The Dancing Knight".
>>
>>21182284

Take a small-ish ship that can easily be operated by the four of us. Proceed to ask if we can follow his next ship heading to the war site as we wish to get involved in some good action after such a long break (in the perspective of everybody who isn't us.
>>
>>21182284
Politely decline. He'd make far better use of it anyway. Free trips are enough.
>>
>>21182317

We wouldn't want to take a crew of his men every time we want to go somehere. We'd be better off with just getting a small ship and learning to use it for ourselves. It's less inconvenience for him and a useful skil lto have. At some point. we could become pirates, too.
>>
>>21182285
>"I don't allow drinking in the building, it stops them from doing anything. When they're shift's over they're free to drink themselves sick, though."

Gerald laughs at you asking him to teach them how to fight, you're the Dancing Knight, the one who slew John the Bloody, and Salin in a week.

>>21182310
>"I own no such boats, but the idea is very interesting..."

>>21182313
>"I know just the one, it's a small infiltrator, silent as night. I use it for corporate espionage. You're welcome to it, though."

Gerald shows you the infiltrator. It's a small ship, indeed. Big enough to fit 7 people in the rooms, and could be crewed by 2.

He tells you that he'll send some people along to stock it for your trip, and gives you the time a Trader is heading to the war site, so you can follow it.

If the first, then lock up the ship and prepare to dock. If the second or third, we can probably trust the paladins anyway, but lock up the ship regardless. Even if we don't have anything on board, someone who dislikes the idea of undead working with their order may try to blow up our ship and kill our apprentices.

"And how much is that information worth?"
>"A drink for the house."

Who's the Patriarch? Who are the enemy? How did this fight start?"
>>
>>21183207
>"I know you did. One of our mystics was having nightmare every night for three years. A skeleton knight is forced to live and relive the same night of horror, but he doesn't falter in the face of the enemy, unless someone gets him out he will be there for ever. Take a guess who made the church aid you?"

Mark looks at your apprentices again.

>"I'll explain this situation as best as I can. This city was the birth place of my God. He lived and died here, spreading his message. To me it is the holiest place on earth, like the oceans for you. But the Church has claimed it can no longer suffer non-believers in such a holy place."

Mark eyes the field again.

>"They're kind people, Daniel, only doing what the need to to survive. I've studied their ways, the similarities between us is striking. Would you like to know the only difference? The name! Their god is our god but by another title! And this is the grounds for a genocide!"

Mark starts to laugh, and can't seem to stop.

"The Patriarch is their leader, elected to rule for 10 years. He wanted to expand their lands, not by force, but by trade. And then they come into contact with Church convoys. That's what started this, a misunderstanding and one dead man."

>>21183217
>"They don't want to fight, but the can't surrender their city, it's their home, Daniel. And they will defend it. But as soon as a good peace option is presented, they'll take it. If I could I would end this entire thing now, but my superiors have denied me that right. But you answer to no one, do you? I would ask you this favour, I know how many times you've saved me and my friends, and that in the beginning we were enemies. But please, forget that, look at this place, and help me end this."

What do you do?
>>
>>21183291
Diplomatize this shit. That city shouldn't have to be stained by any more blood. Ask what the church would need to concede that their gods are the same.
>>
>>21183291

"I'm not a diplomancer, Mark. This is a problem, but not one that I excel at solving. I will do what I can, but I can't guarantee anything."
>>
>>21183291
"Mark, do we know anyone who is skilled in diplomacy?"

I swear if its the fucking elf

Organize a meet between the two. With us there to mediate the talks, no one will try any funny business unless they want a skeletal fist to the face.
>>
>>21183291
has the church tried reasoning at all? if they were to compare beliefs and come to the same conclusion as Mark, maybe we can talk them into leaving this alone. If not that, maybe we can "convert" the others by having them refer to their god using the church's name for it
>>
>>21183291
"Mother fucker, mother fucking fucking fucker.

This is what you're fighting about? Of all things, a fucking name. I am tempted to find the leadership of your church, the people who authorized this bullshit, and to bitchslap them across the battlements. Drag them here by their probably overly ostentatious golden outfits and rub their faces in the muck and blood."
>>
>>21183291
Find whoever's commanding this whole deal. Someone who can make decisions.
And, depending on just how insane/overzenus they are, we might want to warm up our undieing rage.
>>
>>21183314
>"Our leader is a fanatic. Only my God himself coming down and telling him to stop. It is treachery and treason of the highest order for me to say these words. But you are good at what it is. Kill him. Kill that decrepit old man, the next in line was a knight like me, he knows the value of life and would never of allowed animals the likes of the Red Death to operate in the church."

Mark looks with sad eyes.

>"He's here in the camp, to oversee the holy war. Every time I tr to talk him out of this madness he sends me on another attack at the front, hoping it'll be my last. But I just come back, blood stained and tired. Send him from this world, Daniel, so he may face judgement."

>>21183343
>>21183334
>"We're both soldiers, and Adrian was a rogue. Good at sneaking in behind the lines and assassination"

>>21183359
>"I've shown them holy texts, they burn it as blasphemy."

>>21183358
>"They will never agree to it. Neither side trusts the other enough. That's why I need you. You know the value of what's being spent here, you're a soldier like me."

What do you do?
>>
>>21183399

You lost your name and tripcode, story man. FYI.
>>
>>21183399
.....We're not sneaky. We need the fucking elf. Unless we can snipe the leader, and him alone, we're not going to be able to pull this off
>>
>>21183399
"Tell me more about the leader. Name, where he stays, if he has any magic, if he can fight to any degree, if he is ever alone.

And remember, we never had this conversation."
>>
>>21183399
whelp! time to go kill a pope.
capctha: pissaf persuasion
>>
>>21183399

If we can't find a peaceful resolution between the two leaders, there will be hell to pay. Senseless bloodshed between two perfectly good factions is disgusting. We may have to become the hero that the church deserves, but not the one it needs right now.
>>
>>21183430
All we need is the siege bow and some explosives.

We shoot him with an explosives laden arrow, it blows up and someone in the area calls it an act of god punishing him for his arrogance and for causing this worthless bloodshed.
>>

Alright, cold rage time. This isn't a holy war. This is a war of greed with a convenient facade over it. This guy needs to die, in public, with his lies dripping from his lips.

Because of the nature of a God you don't follow, you'll have to roll over 95 for him to hear your prayer and act.

I'm cool with this idea but I reccomend shooting him when alone or only with bodygaurds. Our siegebow is pretty collateral damaging and explosive arrows will make it moreso!

I wonder if we'll ever fight the Retard God's Champion?
>>
>>21183532
Yes.
>>
>>21183510

As you know, if you can think it, I'll write it in and make it work. Creativity gets extra points. Like >>21183566.

You inform Mark of your plan to scare him to death as a specter of the dead fallen here. He likes the idea, it'll leave no trace, and if you wear the regulation armour you'll be unnoticeable in the crowds.

You tell your apprentices to stay with Mark, as you don't want them seeing what it is exactly that makes you glad you don't dream.

You take armour from a corpse, unrecognizable from the crows' feasting.

You remove your own, and put on the looted one. You look like a regulation soldier that no one would give a first glance at, let alone a second.

You wait until nightfall before heading back into the camps.

You see Timorati's tent raised above the smaller ones that the foot soldiers make due with.

You approach the tent and pass by two sleeping guards.

Timorati is kneeling at a solid gold alter, praying fervently for guidance and destruction.

He turns around as you walk up behind him.

>"So Iustitiam has sent his Angel of Death to lead us to victory? Finally, we can siege that town and slaughter those heathens!"

The man honestly believes that you were sent to aid him and his genocide.

What do you do?
>>
>>21183699
>>21183716
I don't think we can pull off a rage like that again. That was a once-in-an-adventure thing. If we went around rending souls with our anger, I think our relationships with our friends would suffer due to us being angrier than a whole fucking chapter of angry marines, and them being terrified 24/7.
>>21183708
The dice gods are strange and funny beings that have a strange sense of humor.
>>
>>21183739
No. You have raised an army against those that worship your same god. For too long you have run counter to the ideals of Iustitiam, and now you have lead his followers against each other and stained his holy city with their blood. There can be only one punishment for an act so vile, so heinous!
>>
>>21183739
put on the most booming voice possible
'NO, THIS WAS A TEST OF YOUR UNDERSTANDING, YOU HAVE FAILED, FOR THIS , YOUR LIFE AND SOUL ARE FORFEIT.'
YOUR TIME IS DONE, ONCE PROMISING, HAS BEEN THE GREATEST DISAPPOINTMENT TO US ALL'.
I SHALL DELIVER YOU TO OBLIVION.
>>
>>21183739

"I am the Angel of Death, sent by Isutitiam to kill you for your sins against my people. You have slaughtered them without remorse, and refuse to listen to the truth that I have tried to show you through my servants. Drown in your ideals and die."

>>21183791
This. We speak calmly, with hate dripping from every word.
>>
>>21183809
I wonder if drowning him would link this back to us, our main thing is exploding people. Drowning seems like it would be pretty quiet too, but it would leave water everywhere. Which leads them to a sea god.
>>
>>21183777
>"I have done nothing but what he commanded me to do!"

>>21183784
You lean down and lift your visor. You can see fear slowly creeping up his face as he's presented with his own mortality. Every syllable you utter is laced with hatred and disgust. But deep down there's pity, pity for another old man, so intent to take everyone down with him to the grave.

"No, this was but a test of your understanding. You have failed, and for this, your life and soul are forfeit. Your time is done, once promising, now the greatest disappointment to us all. I shall deliver you to Oblivion."

You remove a gauntlet and move your skeletal hand to his chest. You put a finger in the center. You feel his heart pound like a drum, but irregular. It's done. After a few seconds he keels over, and the light in his eyes, though twisted and malicious, is gone.

What do you do?
>>
>>21183845
get out of there, hopefully without alerting anyone, then ditch this armor and get ours back. meet with Mark and our apprentices and wait to see how things happen

>>21183845
Tell no one of what transpired. Find Mark again, tell him to inform the next in line for the papacy that he's in charge now.

You leave the tent and walk through the crowds. When you're halfway out you hear a scream, and then shouting. He's been discovered.

You return to mark, now talking with your apprentices about his travels with you.

You tell Mark it's done, no one knew you were there.

You put your own armour back on and ask Mark what happens now.

>"Now? Now a new leader is instilled. It would usually takes weeks, months, maybe. But because of the location it'll be done immediately. Come the morning and a new man shall lead."

Mark closes his eyes and offer a prayer of thanks.

>>21183900
Ask if Clarice and Adrian are in any immediate trouble, if not, see this through.
>>
>>21183900
Ask about the locations of Adrian and Clarice.
Not necessarily in that order.
Ask him what else we've missed in the past three years. Certainly plenty has happened that we don't yet know about. I'd assume after three years of not being around at all, some of the wizards that went into hiding during our original quest may have cropped up again.
>>
>>21183927
They're not around.
>>
>>21183918

Then we keep killing until a goodie becomes leader!
>>

See if we can't get Mark installed as the new pope. How awesome would it be to have TWO champions of Gods in our adventuring party?
>>
>>21183918
Mark knows who's next in line, and his type of character. If he wasn't the best option, he wouldn't of asked you to kill his leader.

>>21183927
>"Clarice went away on a study trip, about a year ago. As for Adrian, he returned home to meet with his family and restore their honour. I don't know how that went, but I'm going to check in on him when this is done. Would you like to accompany me?"

>>21183937
>"I've been busy these years. I was recalled back to the order, and had to sort out the mess it had become. In three years I restored it to glory, but I was thwarted on the bigger things by old men scared by change. The same men that sent me out to die, they know I can drag it into the light, but they refuse."

>>21183962
Pope isn't Champion. Pope's pope, and Champion's champion.

What do you do?
>>
>>21183962
But if he becomes a champion we may have to kill him. It's best if he just remains a paladin instead.
>>
>>21183962

But we can't fight our frienemybro to the death! That'd be really sad.
>>
>>21183973
"Yes, That would be nice. I'd planned on making sure everyone was ok when I found out how long I'd been gone, so this works out quite nicely. And by the way my friend, thank you for helping me out of those woods."
>>
>>21183973
Chill with Mark for a while. See the end of this particular crisis, and then follow him to Elfland or whereever the fuck Adrian/Clarice are. (I assume Clarice is studying magic with elves, and is therefore nearby Adrian.)
>>
>>21183975
No, we only kill the ones that challenge us.

Lets tag along with mark. We've fallen behind on our abuse quota with adrian and need to catch up.

>"The least I could do."

You need to see this mess through to the end.

The living sleep, while you sit through the night with naught but crows and corpses for company. If you didn't have issues, you damn well sure do now.

The sun rises up behind you.

>"Daniel, a new leader should be elected by now. Will you accompany me to see who?"

"Yeah, let's go."

You and your apprentices follow Mark through the crowd. In the light of day the men can see who you truly are, a few of the closer ones see through eye holes at empty sockets filled with a buried hate and rage that makes them shiver.

>"There he is, he's not your leader, so you need not kneel, if you want."

Mark goes down on one knee, along with everyone else in the camp but you and your lads. You don't kneel to men.

>"My brothers! This mindless killing has gone on too long! Today it ends, today we go home and we bring peace with us!"

A roar erupts from the crowd.

The new leader of the church, Pacata Eques, asks Mark and his party to accompany him.

You, Mark, and your apprentices walk through the battlefield to the gates of the city.

Pacata knocks upon them.

The great wooden gates open, as you step through and follow the new pope, wreaths of flowers are thrown upon you. Cheers and thanks are screamed to the air. They're glad the slaughter is over, too.

Pacata meets the city's Patriarch in the middle of the town square.

>"How'd you know I was coming?"
He asks.
>"Little birds, my friend."

The both laugh at the little joke and leave for a private pavilion to discuss matters.

A few hours later they both come out with great smiles and shake hands.

Pacata tells you the terms of the new peace.

>"The city will open its walls to all traders and all pilgrims who want to pray here, in exchange the might of the church will protect it from this day on."

Sounds good.

Mark turns around and wrist locks you, like always.

>"Daniel, my brother, before you came this was a place of death and violence. But in one night you did so much and saved so many. Truly, your God chose well when he made you Champion."

The Patriarch has heard about the Dancing Knight of the East and wishes to speak with you.

>"So, Daniel, how'd you kill the old pope? Oh, don't act surprised. The moment I knew you were here I knew that death would follow. I don't blame you for it, no, never. It was needed. But none of my people could do it, nor could our new friends. It would only fuel the war. It could only have been you."

Hominis, he tells you his name.

>"For this favour I and the people of this city, are in your debt. What would you wish of me?"

What do you do?

>>21184233
Allow people to worship Hydra within your walls with out persecution.
>>
also, why not ask for a book-o-magic or two if there's any lying around?
>>
>>21184270
This, and maybe some gold for the road when we and mark go off elf hunting.
>>
>>21184233
"I have no idea what you're talking about. It was an act of god, haven't you heard the news. I'm just a humble skeleton.

Though I suppose if I was going to kill an old man with heart problems I'd dress myself up in the armor of a dead paladin, sneak up to him in the middle of the night, declare that his god was displeased with his actions and scare him to death. Hypothetically of course.

As for what I want, make this city a city of peace. Allow for the followers of all gods, especially Hydra, to live here peaceably, as long as they respect the peace.

Also if you have any cool magic items lying around that'd be nice as well."
>>
>>21184284
That's right we should ask about any mages about.

We don't need gold; we have plenty of money. In addition, we don't really need books either. We're well armed, we don't eat, we have plenty of protection, and we have a spider traveling with us. We don't really need a whole lot in the way of material goods.

His voice takes on a darker tone.
