so /tg/, ive been running a campaign for my brother. He's only 14, 15 in december but over the past year he's fallen into the wrong crowd thanks to the shitty suburb my mum lives in and ive since moved out of home. He ended up getting busted doing drugs and had abit of a habit, but thats a few months past. I decided to try and nudge him over to the nerd Domain by running a Pathfinder Campaign set in a mythology rich classical greece of 270 BC, involving a grand quest traveling from athens to the far east, and back again.

But basicly way things are going they'll have basicly created modern steam engines and an analogue for firearms which are more akin to coil guns than blackpowder rifles by the end of the campaign. The overall quest is to stop an Evil Macedonian king from possibly destroying the world by getting a great powerful object from the far east and gathering allies, essentially uniting alot of the old world under a loose confederation from egypt to india.

Now i planned to run another campaign set after this (if he's victorious) about the repercussions of these events on the ancient world and ive basicly realized: The group will have created the industrial revolution 2000 years before it ever began as well as ushered in an Era of peace lasting for at least a century.

So /tg/, i need your help trying to flesh out a setting built around 150 AD after the ideas of steam technology were planted in 268BC. You guys can always do something good and im not too fussed what you throw in, as im probably going to include it all considering this isn't a minor modification to a timeline but a bold new world.
>>
So far the few things i have is that Christians are now essentially communist Revolutionaries. With the advent of this newfangled rifle, while its still expensive it allows the lower classes to fight on an equal footing to the higher nobility who were the ones who had the leisure to train for war. Jesus teaches all men are equal but his followers take it to heart in a different way, resulting in a Syrian 'Holy' Republic.

Rome gets curb stomped early on for siding with the BBEG and is unable to either expand into greece or threaten Carthage and forced to give up some Samnite States. Focuses its expansion on the barbarian northlands.

Carthage has become the defacto power in the western med, but lost its provinces in Iberia due to godly dicking around in the last days of the war in which the campaign takes place. Has regained some ground in Iberia but has begun to focus more on the Ivory coast and her colonies in britain.

Greece is a loose confederation of city states similar to the holy roman empire and mostly keep to themselves.

OP, you sound pretty awesome in general, and I wish you the best of luck even if I can't really help you.

Though simply concept wise, I might suggest trying to do a cold-war spy thriller flavored game, given the technology of the era and so on. Maybe involving a space race, even.
>>
>>21164614

Blood is blood, and i had a terrible childhood and made more mistakes than i like to think of and are generally depressing. Id have killed to have somebody there to do the same for me.

Space race is far too early, but you know the 'spy thriller' thing could just be the way to take this campaign. He's been wanting to get into shadowrun so i could throw abit of that flavouring in, have the stand off between the Carthaginian Empire and Ptolemaic Egypt as the two defacto Mediterranean powers in the region which are technically 'allies' along with Christians trying to destabilize the entire western world to pave way for the 'global expansion'
>>
Excuse me for going completely un-original here, by why not introduce a faction a kin to "Caesers Legion" from FalloutNV. Reminants of the old Empire now coming back bigger and better than ever with "modern" technologies.

You could have their edge be newly discovered flame weapons (flame throwers, napalm etc)
>>
>>21164677
That's what makes an awesome person, OP.

How far did this century of peace and industrial revolution spread? Are germanic tribes/steppe nomads included? If China took part too, it seems plausible that they could be forced to face a mongol invasion with repeating rifles rather than longbows.

Failing that, maybe a race for the new world?
>>
>>21164728

The old Empire being pushed across into Saudi Arabia and stumbling across oil and it's and it's many lovely uses. New Empire (The Legion) strikes out from there using slaves to refine the oil and weaponise it in the form of "Flame Lances" (Flame Throwers), "Roman Fire" (Napalm), "Stones of Mars" (Crude fuel air bomb type weapon. Thrown from a catapult, it pops into a cloud of flamable gas and then ignites after a secondary bomb explodes). Have them have more powerful locomotion due to the oil they process.

technically the roman empire never even formed, since it gained its true power after defeating Carthage, something that never happened here. Its maximum expansion was italy, sicily and iberia in this timeline.

>>21164773

Pretty much most 'civilized' nations have gotten the spread of technology, but due to romes aggressive expansion towards the north, Carthages colonies in britain and through just general trade, alot of europe has small forms of this technology. Germany is the only real major player, and only a small faction. Thats what i got in my head at least.

China is going through what the rest of the world did 30-40 years after these discoveries due to its far off location. India on the other hand is a rising power house and a major worry for Current Persia (Which is now a Greco-Persian state since the greek rulers were never deposed)
>>
>>21164808

This is actually a PERFECT picture. While this coilgun technology has caught on, the minerals required to use it are very rare and deplete in power after so many uses. So most armies are currently in a 'combined arms' phase with very few using pure 'Daedali infantry' as they've come to be termed (Daedalus was responsible for the invention)

Think Pike and shot formations of European the 15th century, but with melee weapons and troop formations of the Era.

So Rome might be the object of focus for Carthage/Egypt? Like Vietnam or Israel & Syria/Egypt for the US and SovUnion.

>>21164850
Tercios are pretty neat.
>>
>>21164859

Rome is pretty resentful at being kicked in the nuts after the events. Again, all of this depends on exactly WHAT the players do, but ive lined stuff up for them so this is technically what should happen.

Rome got assistance from Macedonia (BBEGs state that has alot more land than historical macedonia owned) through troops and MAGICS, fucked the HELL out of Carthage in the first punic war and basicly wiped out all of its Iberian assets with bioweaponry.

When (or if) the grand alliance defeats Macedonia and the BBEG, theres basicly going to be all of the land from egypt to India in allegience with the player, and Carthage joins this alliance. Result is Rome gets its ass kicked, forced to give up almost all of its gains and most of southern italy.

Think 'The south will rise again', but with Caeser.
>>
>>21164426
>modern steam engines
Define "modern". What kind of tech level are we talking, here? Some more information on your firearm analog would be nice as well.

Also, I have a single word for you, OP. "Infrastructure".
The Holy Roman Empire had a MASSIVE hardon for good infrastructure. Look at all the roads and aqueducts and public buildings and god-knows-what-else they built using only slave labor, hand tools, and some simple math. Now imagine what they could have done if they were properly industrialized. Ho-lee shit. They would have been building railroads and factories and I don't even know off the top of my head but cool stuff regardless.

Would you want to see a temple honoring the new Roman god of Industry and Prosperity? BECAUSE I SURE AS FUCK WOULD.

I'm telling you bro, bring in the oil! It's give them a "look at this new technology" edge whilst opening up the middle east into the setting etc.

It could be a sort of breakway faction that travelled further east when south italy as lost.
>>
>>21164920

Thats actually a good point...i might throw in a god of industry thats born out of this new Era.

Anyway due to technological limitations and because the PCs basicly had a mad inventor with them, it takes the world about 300 years to develop steam technology on par with about 1810s of our world. There has been a decay for the past 70-80 years (assuming its set in 150AD) due to loss of stability and the fact that nobodys too sure what to do next. Basicly, WW2 (since we've technically already had WW1) is around the corner because now that people aren't advancing like motherfuckers anymore, eyes start to turn on near by borders.
>>
>>21164958

I could if it was feasible, but Sa'ba reigns supreme over southern Arabia now. Fun fact though: I made the Sultan a toad who got turned into one by accident. DMing is fun.

Back to the topic, oil will be a major factor in this era and will be discovered early into the game. It will be the spark that ignites the powder keg basicly.
>>
>>21164977
The Romans were animists. They'd have a god of steam, a god of railroad tracks, a god of trains, a god of coal, a god of smoke, a god of railroad spikes, etc.
>>
>>21164991

Swictheroo then. Why not have them kicking it? They;d have a massive advantage with this new fuel source. Imagine them all, wearing eye and mouth protection because of the fumes. Their enemies coughing and running blind before them as they burn their way into Europe with the Earths "black blood" as their ace int he hole.
>>
>>21165006

It should be said, ALL gods are real in this setting. Every one that existed in mythology in our world, is a true entity in this. Their powers aren't as super duper as you may think, and so far apollo has died and Hermes had to give up his godhood to save a character.

>>21165008

Hmm i could, since they'll pretty much have a monopoly on east africa.
>>
Hey, that's kinda similar to some shit I made once. cool.

>>
It occurred to me, OP, that you could actually have the East India Company be a company from Eastern India, bent on exploiting the coasts of the Indian Ocean. (Phillipines, Madagascar, south africa, Australia, etc.)

Has Julius Ceaser already existed in your timeline, or did you put of his birth by a century or two just 'cause?

You rock endlessly.

Brothers character (the hero of the campaign basicly): Early 20s Archer wearing a Greco-breastplate and armored kilt with a dagger with a crystal hilt at his waist. Short cropped hair and cleanly shaven. Symbol of the scales on his chest. Has hermes winged shoes and a minotaur horn hung around him like a powder horn.

Philocles: Standard hoplite gear right down to shield and spear with hermes winged cap on. Late 50s, serves as the old mentor type (actually my DM who i got to be the mentor for my brother in the campaign to show him the ropes). Battered armour, long glorious hair.

Atalanta: Woman in typical hoplite garb with a Corinthian helm under her arm and a scar marked across her face with an eye patch covering it. Short cropped hair.

Michael son of Caine (no, really): Literally Michael Caine from Zulu with a mini crossbow serving as his 'pistol' and a scale armored shirt.

and a 9 Foot tall happy go lucky Minotaur with one horn.
>>
>>21165121

And again thank you so much. My brothers really liked this campaign and i think he'll love this picture alot. I wish i had my image folder so i could reward you somehow for your potential charity.

>>
Back to your original topic, OP, perhaps a wild-west kind of game? Given the setting, it seems plausible, and you have plenty of frontier to play with, be it northern/eastern Europe, Western Iberia, or the southernmost stretches of Africa that Carthage/Egypt can interact with. Perhaps some lost city in the desert that both powers struggle for?
>>
>>21164977

Just as an FYI, your age of steam couldn't come about without a serious sea change in metallurgy and metals manufacturing. You don't have reliable steam engines without steel, and steel isn't something you eureka your way to. Shit, the first lead screw for a lathe wasn't built until the 1700s, when some poor bastard Frenchman cut a few feet of threaded rod BY HAND. Just this simple aspect - the ability to machine cut threads - required an entire technology to be imagined and realized before it could be used to build the parts to automate the process. And I could name another ten points between the most rudimentary lathe and a decent machine lathe required to get the technical accuracy and ability needed to make steam fittings of practical industrial use.

Cast iron is easy. A good hot charcoal or coke fire and some simple tech the Chinese mastered, and you can crank out cast iron all day long. But proper tool grade steel, that's far further down the evolutionary ladder, and that's what you need to machine the steel that goes into a steam boiler that can bear enough pressure to not be a simple curiosity piece. You'd better have some very strong handwave going.
>>

i got college at 9am, but ill stay up all night for mah bro if required. A million thanks and may the lords improve your day.

>>21165220

I think you're forgetting MAGIC. Albiet its a low magic setting, but alot of this is going to be done with non existant objects and such.

Realisticly though, how long would it take a to go from knowledge of steam to 1810s level of steam, factoring in 150 years of peace time? I do want to be as 'realistic' as possible and i had considered all you said, but im guessing i didn't consider it deeply enough...
>>
>>21165229

I have to head for work now, so I can't go into great detail. Just remember, a lot of this is refinements in existing processes that step up precision and quality. Those typically aren't AHA! moments, and they may not be something you can just magic your way around. For instance, you can use rivets for a lot, but you need threaded bolts for certain applications. Those require a dividing head for a machine lathe, which in turn requires semi-precision metal gears, multiple threaded parts, a good index for flatness and parallelism, etc. Or you can cut every bolt by hand.

A few good references for the layman would be the books by Dave Gingery and Steve Chastain. In particular, Gingery has a series of books on building a smelting furnace and a machine lathe from scratch with next to zero machine tools; that said, it's predicated on the ready availability of certain mass produced products, foreknowledge of the technical knowhow, and a baseline level of industry surrounding you to produce an infinite supply of cheap aluminum and pot metal. Mentally replace "we already have this" or "you can easily find" with "they would have to innovate this completely from scratch".
>>
>>21165337

Im using the mythical figure Daedalus for alot of this. Well rather, my players are. I knew giving them a mineral that changes the magnet property of metal was a bad idea. Fucking Daedali everywhere.

But basicly, dude is a genius and ingame, is responsible for the amazing siege machines used in real life for the siege of rhodes, and then the construction of the Giant of Rhodes
>>
>>21165337
I'm sure that the artisans and craftsmen of the time could build some of the precision parts, although it would be grueling, arduous work.

How much of a leap is it to go from that to having mechanized tools to do the same thing? (say, having standardized dies instead of cutting bolts by hand)

So, how much crazy stuff not found on Earth is in here, and what's the limits of its abilities, rarity and such?
While politics and the play of nations are a great skeleton for a setting, it also needs meat- people, characters, events, technologies.
This world needs a Nikola Tesla.
>>
>>21165601

Nope.
>>
>>21165633

the ancient figure 'Daedalus' is basicly nikola tesla, and he's a party NPC companion.

Well on rhodes there is a capital of mythological beings. Satyrs, Centaurs, Minotaurs (my brother got one called mannish who he got overly attatched too, and i may have killed off). If it exists in myth, it exists in this game, but in small doses. They've met Medusa, who was actually a rather nice lady and healer, but very paranoid and former lover of hermes (who gets around).

Magic is VERY uncommon, they've encountered it only when they've seen gods and met only one 'wizard'. Although next session they get godly boons.

also if /tg/ is super interested, i could write up this setting in full and post it here.
>>
>>21165633

It has alot of meat. The group is being chased by Laskarina, an Athenian who they fought under during the invasion of Aegina in the very first session, who has been ordered by the BBEG to track down my bros character and bring him back dead or alive. He's an honorable man though, and truly good deep down but is simply following his kings orders.

They actually got ship wrecked together and were forced to survive in the desert, and when Laskarina was poisoned, when my brother was given the option to leave the NPC to die in the desert, he dragged him with him despite the knowledge that he would still try to arrest him if he got into a position of power again, and saved his life.

Another character was Pan, the Satyr who owned a riverboat on the nile. He died after a hydra attack though near the Indus, and served as the players ferryman basicly.

And then theres mannish, the 9 foot tall minotaur with the mind of a child who became best friends with my brothers character. He was based entirely off mannish from adventure time to be quite honest. He was last seen in eastern Persia after the players band was forced to retreat and they had to select either a large group of men, or mannish to cover the retreat.

>>
>>21165633

Basicly ive been running this campaign for 3 months and i could write a god damn book on whats happened, but it'd take way too long to try and explain ALL of it. Basicly, Demetrius, the king of macedonia (who in real life was an insane rapist who spent literally BILLIONS on whores) has been touched by a dark god, and vows to take Mount Olympus. Athena contacts Hannibal (mah bro) to tell him he is her avatar, and he must follow his heart eastward to find the only item capable of destroying Demetrius who is essentially a god now (was proclaimed one in real life, ive based alot of the campaign around real life events in 280-260BC) but only one of mortal blood can wield it.

Basicly it'll end with him in japan and meeting Alexander the great who is an old man and the Avatar of Ares, who originally tried to make a great empire to rule the world in peace, but failed due to interference from said god and faked his death to travel eastward to guard said item. This inturn lines up with japanese history as at the same period, japan was invaded by an unknown peoples who then mixed with the natives to form modern japan.

After which he'll travel back home, form the coalition, fight a massive battle and hopefully kill the bad guy.

For the setting name, could we involve these Daedali soldiers guys?
Romans that can outpunch an Abrams seems fairly distinct from similar settings... Or could mean you're playing one of the early Civilization games.
>>
>>21165793

Basicly, every god is real. Norse, Poeni, Roman, Greek, Celtic. You name him, he exists.

Hekate is the dark god, the embodiment of evil. She is sick of the gods acting like puffed up nobles getting all the praise, so she decided shes going to kill the gods.

To perform this, if a mortal enters Olympus, he defys the laws of the gods which are the laws of nature themselves, ending the world and ushering in nothing but darkness.

Hekate then possessed Demetrius, the king of Macedonia. While he has god like powers, he cannot alone march up Olympus as the gods will try to stop them through intervention in the politics of humans. So to fix this, she figured if he conquered all the humans within 3000-4000km of Olympus she'll face no opposition. Demetrius believes he's in control, gaining a kingdom, but really he's losing his sanity.

So, Demetrius is amassing men and creatures to make war upon all of man (near by at least) and has done so already by invading asia minor. And thus the above happens.

So far its been 8 years since my brother (whos character was 15 when he started the quest) has left athens, and is currently in eastern Afghanistan.

My inspiration for all this was the epics of greek poetry, and this was to be the most epic of them all (game wise): a man who united the world to save it, by marching across it and back again.

To be fair, it doesn't operate on exact coilgun speeds as it takes some time to take effect inthe metal, enough so its probably twice as fast as a musket round.

But when you consider its more accurate, silent and fires whats effectively a spearhead, its still kinda cool.

And if anyones drawing up some art work for thsi setting. I would very much like to see a Roman Centurion wielding a flame thrower. Failing that, some sort of arabian fellow

Me and a friend had the best idea for a greek monster...
A lady.... with tits that are chameleon eyes!
And if you look into her breyests (geddit? breasts+eyes) your dick turns to stone.
Have fun with that one, Freud!

You dont need fossil fuels for flame throwers, theres other flamable oils i believe.

Well i could write weekly updates on my brothers game. we hold it every monday, considering that the setting all depends on what he does. I really dont want to seem attention whore-y though.

I wouldn't mind about learning more about your campaign progression. It's better than just another image dump thread or a rate my army/deck thread.

/tg/ loves large storytimes. I'd advise saving it all up and dumping it.

Revolutio Daedali has now been archived.

http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html

Please be kind to the creator of this thread and take a moment to grant the record a positive vote, that it may stay with us for years to come.

As an Archivist, Historian, and GM, I would like to take a moment to congratulate the setting's creator on his unique vision, and the touching cause for its manufacture.

Keep up the good work.

And get it done.

I have the weirdest boner right now. Seriously, history is my cocaine. And to be fair technically its my brothers vision. I created a 270bc setting for him and a few friends to play in, he and them ended up doing batshit insane things too create the image i have of the future of this setting.

This. Maybe write up a session, or the sessions so far, see how it goes. One writeup a week might be too often depending on the pacing of your game, but we could always make it an alternative ancient history / mythology general thread.

>>
>>21166254

The pacing isn't that fast. It may have taken them 8 years so far, but alot of that is random traveling time, training and such. Also, if i am to write this up into a setting of its own, would anybody be willing to help? While i believe i may have a good imagination its always best to bounce ideas off somebody.

You could just brainstorm in a thread on /tg/, have a page on 1d4chan for the results and so on. No need for a whole wiki (yet?) imo.

But yeah, I'd help out where I could, OP
>>
>>21166446

The only problem with writing all this stuff is subject to change. For example, if the players decide to not do something that i got written down, unless its MAJORLY important i wont railroad them and it doesn't happen which means the timeline could alter drastically. Or if they do something super amazing or introduce a technology/idea then it could also alter the timeline drastically.

Metalfag here, home on lunch. The problem isn't reproducing the bits needed to get to the tech level to do this. You and I can build a machining lathe from scratch using nothing but hand tools, easily. The only thing it would take is time and raw resources -- and those raw resources are key. I can go to every junkyard in the nation and pull pistons until I'm sick, and I'll have all the aluminum I ever wanted. But this is predicated on the existence of scrap aluminum -- if you can't reproduce the Hall-Héroult process, then you have an amount of aluminum that approaches zero.

Add to that the actual mechanical needs and processes that I've touched on. They're things you CAN do, with certain caveats. It would take one SKILLED machinist several months and multiple tries to cut a threaded iron or steel rod of three feet in length with enough precision to reliably drive an automated tool carriage. This technology wasn't developed until the 1700s for good reason -- the tools themselves weren't precise enough to do the work up until that point. From the days of the whip lathe, you see a constant cycle of tool, material, and process refinement as new techniques and mechanical innovations enable machinists to make the tools better, thereby making more precise stuff (or enabling the creation of certain items PERIOD).

Thank you, sir. Your dialogue is both interesting and edifying.
>>
>>21167688
(ctd)

To summarize my rambling: the ancients were smart. As smart as we are today. We have the added advantage of several millennia of innovation, trial and error, and referential experience that got us to the ability to mass produce steel and work it into reliable boilers. What you need is a realistic WHY for metallurgy to jump two millennia in a century. It's not going to be one point of change - even handing a design document on the Bessemer process, written in Attic Greek, to an Athenian metalworker won't result in him completely reworking his entire toolset. Something has to drive this innovation, and whatever this something is, it has to be powerful and compelling enough to compress those historic changes down into the timescale you need.

Or you can just handwave really, REALLY hard, so long as nobody peeks under the hood and sees it's running on wishes and fairy dust.
>>
>>21167741

Not a problem. This has become a sub-hobby of mine, so I like spreading around the knowledge where I can.

I'm headed back to work in ~5, but I'll check this thread again when I get home tonight if anyone has anymore technical or background questions on scaling metals technology from bronze age to age of steam.

Siclian Autonomous Region

Sicily its strategicly located between the two major powers of Carthage and Rome. While rome has declined in power and Carthage has a wide range of regions to focus its colonial Interests on, it doesn't make Sicily any less of a prime target for these hungry nations with either nation holding it would have a great strategic advantage over the other both due to the location and the amazingly fertile land that exists thanks to its volcanic nature.

At the end of the war of the gods when the post war borders were being drawn, it was agreed that no external power may interfere with the affairs of Sicily, with several nations signing a mutral defense pact to protect it.

The result is not as noble as the original intensions, and Sicily is a very chaotic land. A city state is born and falls every year on the island, with various factions vying for total dominance over the Island. Syracuse is the only real stable power on the island, and this is mostly due to the Egyptian Daedali Garrison stationed in the city as a rapid reaction force incase of any move by foreign states. Akin to modern UN peacekeepers essentially.

The island will have a very wild west feel to it.
>>
Triremes/Galleys

While certain technologies have been introduced into the setting via meta knowledge and mad scientists, it doesn't mean that all forms develop. While naval technology has improved somewhat, its still very similar to that of what you'd see in 280BC.

Steam powered ships are somewhat common, but due to the amount of fuel it takes to feed a boiler many of them are combat ships. Out of combat the Sails and if required, oars would be used, while incombat the oars are retracted and the engine fired up. This gives a galley MUCH more fighting power than the ones 300 years prior with the roarers able to act as marrines and Daedali.

Some much larger ships use both steam power as well as oars in combat, making them extremely dominating forces on the high seas due to their ability to turn on a time, enhanced speed and ability to mount heavier weapons such as Cannon and large ballistia, some of the more majestic ones being akin to floating castles with towers and siege weaponry.
>>
Hellenic Infantry

Due to the fact Daedali troop types originated in greece, it makes sense that greece has the most amount of these infantrymen. While regular arms of spear, sword and cavalry (albiet very little of the last) are used, these are more or less supporting units, rather than the opposite in other nations where Daedali are supporting infantry.

They fight on the field of battle in massed lined formations similar to that of europe in the times of the wars of the coalition in 1800-1815, with a difference being that they still fight completely armored, but only in light leather jerkins and simply Corinthian Helms. The tactic used by greeks is some smaller, but more accurate daedali arms to chew through the enemy before they make contact. This makes facing greek infantry a fearsome task by many nations, but their one weakness is once engaged they are almost effectively out of the fight, as they rely on their range and mobility to dominate the battlefield and prefer to run from a fight rather than to stand up to one.

I just found this thread an you are awesome, OP.

Not having time to read all of it one thing it seems to me you are forgetting of is Thrace. Considering the issue here, is how are you going to uses those numerous, mercenary tattooed hat wearing psychos that were of almost Greek and Roman development in that age?

Without the Roman intervention they may have become united and be the premier European Land Army. Considering their proximity to Greece, they might be something no one else bothers, since the world around the Mediterranean and that latitude degrees is the important part and not the northern hicks.
