Sadly (?) for Enki I feel the back story may have to be somewhat more, well, everyday. A week's worth of constant fucking might fit for Gilgamesh-as-a-Tarantine-gangster-flick, but not so much for a magical girl one.

A country girl who ends up spending a week or so more or less alone in the city (only parent on a business trip during some school break) a year or two before the story itself begins.

She runs into Onigawara (this being before her health went down the drain), and they end up becoming friends, probably with Onigawara taking her on a tour of every bakery, café, ice cream shop and candy store of the city or some such.

Oh, and for Huwawa, Gilly's obviously using her own classmates as bait to bring out the beast.

I think a sports tournament would actually fit perfectly. Both "Gilly" and "Enki" are extremely competitive girls (Gilly just about anything and Enki about sports in particular, being an athletic tomboy). Something as simple as one of them losing to another in a contest in front of the entire school (better yet, make it a TIE) could spark an obsessive love-hat relationship that's bound to explode dramatically when you add little miss cancer into the picture

The text gets very fragmentary here, but to me the idea of one fott on the ground, and the other displaced, suggests a half-defeat, half-victory, ie a tie.

Suits the pseudo Madoka story perfectly. Miss Perfect (we really need to find a name for her) refuses to make the contract with the cute creepy Ishtar stand in (who also need a name), so to "convince" her she quietly arranges for a far more agressive magical girl (with a cowgirl theme) to arrive in the area and start wrecking shit up as she kills monsters.

Now Gilgamesh stand in has to contract.

Hm, maybe play the monster, Yuri turns up to stop her, gets horrifically puemmeled for it, Gilly and Enki decide it's contract time, Ishtar has a "just as planned" moment for a while until it turns out that the two new recruits were a bit overly thorough in defeating her old trusty legbreaker.

And on an unrelated note, the journey to deal with Huwawa would be woven together with a class trip to near where Enki grew up, wouldn't it?

If Bull of Heaven is going to be a magical girl, I think a suitable weapon for her would be a bell. A massive, larger than she is, immensely heavy bell on a huge chain - she swings it around like a horrible wrecking-ball of ear-splitting doom. It fits both her cowgirl theme and the idea that she's a brutal, senselessly destructive, not-very-smart and easily manipulated magical girl. The fact that the chains also wrap around her symbolize her servitude to "Ishtar".

It also fits the Gilgamesh story perfectly. Now, recall that Gilgamesh only became obssessed with immortality after Enkidu died... and at the very end, decided to let go of his obsession because he realized his memory will live on forever with his kingdom of Uruk.

My radar might be off but I think I am sensing some bromance here.

I have an idea about "Gilly" (or however we decide to call her): everyone at school knows that she's the daughter of an extremely rich and powerful CEO (it goes together with being the stereotype of the perfect, popular, successful girl. I bet she's the student council president too). What they don't know, is that unlike her father, who came from an old and powerful family himself, originally married a fucking low-class woman, and she's her daughter. Social pressure (and the family) pushed him, though, so he ended up divorcing her to marry a more appropriate woman.

This both plays on Gilgamesh' myhtical origin as a "1/3 Mortal 2/3 God" (assuming "mortals" are normal people and "gods" are the fucking successful ones), and might explain her extreme disdain of weak people - she's overcompensating for what she believes to be her own inherent weakness/impurity, just like Gilgamesh detested his own mortality.

Or maybe, for even MORE drama, her original mother died of some disease. Plays up to the "purity" angle, and might be one reason she's so attracted to Yuri - she might be seeing a mother figure there, deep in her subconscious.

Fits very well if you assume the three main girls are a "team" of sorts. Enkidu is obviously going to have some sort of massive, brutal melee weapon (a giant sword? a giant axe?), Yuri attacks from afar with her knives (as well as serving in a general support role with her Analysis ability), and Gilgamesh is OF COURSE a perfect combination of melee and ranged ass-kicking with her katana and revolver (as you know, Katanas are Just Better, and Revolvers are Just Better, so really, there could be no other option for Gilly)

We never came up with a reason back then - that's perfectly good. Shows just how insecure she is. Fits with her "poor, pathetic moe" image.

As for how the two of them met... I can totally see it as being some sort of minor white knighting scenario. Say, a couple years back, right before she learned she was sick (there were few symptoms in the beginning, mostly tiredness and such, so nobody suspected a thing), she suddenly loses consciousness in the middle of class and gets taken to the nurse' office. Next thing she remembers, she wakes up... and Gilly's sitting next to her, because, being the president, she obviously feels obliged to take personal care of all of her students - and in this paritcular case (perhaps due to the aforementioned tragic backstory), they clicked.

This girl hits you FAST and HARD, and she knows it and is very happy to rub the fact into your nose at every opportunity.

She likes her despite her being POOR POOR POOR and her family hating that. She even keeps their friendship a secret from her mother.
She might even like her partially because she's free of an overbearing family, while Yuri likes her because she's completely free (from what Yuri knows).
From that the seeds of love grow, but when Gilly confesses, she rejects thinking she'd just be a burden to her 'freedom'.

Who is going to be the viewpoint character? Yuri, right? Even though she's relatively passive/weak, just like Madoka, she stands in the center of the drama, and most important relationships tie around her.

Gilly may be heroic and awesome, but the story would probably be mostly told from the far more subdued, cynical point of view of the dying girl. That's the thing about mythological heroes like Gilgamesh: they are so grand, so amazing, so unearthly, that you can only admire them from afar. There's no telling what goes on in their minds.

I say the first character we should really flash out, thus, is Yuri.

I think, at this point, even a wheelchair is too limiting. While she needs to be all miserable and sick, it wouldn't do us any good if she'd be so much as to be unable to frequently interact with the other characters.

I'd say at the beginning of the story her condition's still relatively fine (and the treatments haven't gotten to her yet), but she's obviously sick and worsening: she might fall asleep at times, need a break to catch her breath every five minutes, not eat anything, and so on. And I can totally see her wearing one of those woolen "Cancer Kid" cups - they look incredibly moe, and in her case, she's desperately trying to cling to what little hair she has left.

She probably doesn't wash it much either, since, unless you're very, very, VERY gentle, washing your hair when in this condition would likely cause huge clumps of it to get broken off and just stick to the shower floor in a pathetic, wet mess.

Honestly you don't have to use every single part of the epic to retell the epic in another medium.
Cut out what doesn't make sense and alter problem parts to make sense. As long as in the end we get the most important parts it'll be fine.

Continuing on this last point, it is likely that she is among the first, if not the VERY first character to make a Contract - wheres Gilgamesh and Enkidu would do so for relatively "vain" reasons, Yuri (at least in her minds) is fighting for her life, literally.

Once again contrasting Gilly, she probably comes from a not-very-well-to-do family - not piss poor, but not affluent, either. The treatments and such might taking a massive financial toll on them, which is likely to only increase her feelings of self-loathing and such ("I'm a burden upon everyone who loves me"), giving her yet more motivation to become a magical girl. Unfortunately, she lacks Gilly or Enkidu's raw power, and so wouldn't last long without their help...

What do you think should be her personality? Cynical? Cheerful despite it all? Melancholy? Determined?

Does she have any hobbies? She obviously can't do sports. Maybe drawing or sketching? (it has to be something low-key enough that Gilly wouldn't even care about competing with her at it)

I like the idea of her taking up drawing and occasionally Gilly tries to compete against her only for Yuri to tut her and say "You can't beat a friend at drawing with them".

She's probably happy when she can see her friends and everyone enjoying being with her, but when that's not right in her mind she thinks of how burdensome she is.

Her family is rather big and she's used to taking care of a lot of chores around the house as well as watching many kids at once.

Apparently the girl in the bed next to Strawberry Cancer Cure Yuri not only shared the same name, but looked up to her....in a special sort of way.

Onigawara Yuri
- Hard-working, contemplative, brooding, determined, unyielding
- Large family, lower-middle class. Eldest sister used to taking care of everyone.
- Enjoys cooking and painting.
- Has some sort of really bad medical condition, implied leukemia (?)
- Still not living 24/7 in the hospital, but she's getting weaker by the day.
- Feels that she is now a burden upon her loved ones.
- Wears an adorable hat.
- In Magical Girl mode, conjures and throws knives from afar. Her already impressive perception becomes unnaturally keen.
- Plans to use her Wish to return to full health.
