Walking through the enormous halls, you look this way and that- great stone pillars lay on each side, and strange streams of aged paper hanging from the eaves.
Tyr, ponderously, stepped ahead of your group of four, thick bandages of leather wrapped around half of his face, and around one of his wrists. He held his great, almost maul-like hammer head-down, leaning on it as he walked. Eventually, he took a side passage, and from what little you see... the hallways are long, incredibly long- you look to the other side of the T intersection, and you can see the hallway must reach across the entire mountain range.

"In here." He said, and stepped into the side passage.

You follow him, and you end up in a larger, warmer chamber, with a red rug on the ground, and strange, gleaming yellow gems set into the walls, giving off light.
He took a seat in one of the enormous plush chairs, and you climb up into one as well, Jeanne, Kaliel, and Lewin taking their own seats; For everyone but Tyr, the seats were too large.

"Now." Tyr asked. "May I ask why you've come here?"

"I regret that we got off to a bad start. I want to talk properly, without the end of the world looming over us. It is always better to cooperate than to fight."
Try and heal those wounds we gave him.

It's time.
>>
"I regret that we got off to a bad start." You say, shifting your weight in the chair- it was incredibly comfortable, surprisingly. "I want to talk properly, without the end of the world looming over us. It is always better to cooperate than to fight."

You raise your hand, and close your eyes, bringing forth your power. Healing magic sparks from your fingertips, and they trace over his wrist, and his face, as you feel the stone reshaping itself, and the bone and blood underneath reforming.

Tyr scratched at some of the lichen on his reddish granite skin, making a loud scraping noise... and then nodded, untying the leather straps from his wrist and face.
"You speak wisely." He said. "And you did call a hold to our battle, in which either- or both- of us could have died, when our goals were the same. I agree, we should speak."
>>
>>21095654
We were ones that were wrong on what'd happen if the Gearworks got destroyed right? If so, then
"I wish to apologize for doubting your prediction of the Gearwork's effects, after speaking with it I was able to confirm your suspisicions and was able to destroy it, fixing the flow of magic, but also creating some more magic in this one so we aren't dramatically affected. It should all balance out in the next century or so, now."
>>
>>21095654
"Before we start would you like some tea? I find it makes talks like this more enjoyable.

I should start by apologizing for the dwarves who me and my companions killed when they suddenly attacked. I am truly sorry."
>>
>>21095654
"I apologise for fighting so under-informed. The Gearworks told me a lot. The dragons must have been desperate indeed to build a weapon like that."
>>
>>21095693
To be fair, they attacked us. We tried to retreat without fighting. Then we came back and disabled all of them without killing. I don't think we could have done better.
>>
>>21095654
"Before its death, the Gearworks informed me that, although the demons will have no further cause to invade other worlds, some will likely continue to do so regardless. Perhaps now they can be fought back by a world united, but even so we should continue to expect the occasional dimensional refugees.

As you may have noticed, there is a new constellation in the sky. That was my request of the Gearworks, as a way to balance the existing state of magic in this world and also repair the natural flow of magic in all others. While this method takes more time for the balance to be achieved, I believe that it is less catastrophic overall than the other two options."
>>
"Before we start, would you like some tea? I find it makes talks like this more enjoyable."
"I prefer water, I'm afraid." He said. "But feel free."

You quickly set some tea out on the table and set it to brew.

"I should start by apologizing for the dwarves who me and my companions killed when they suddenly attacked. I am truly sorry."
"No, it was an oversight on my part." He said. "I expected only the two handmaidens to be there, at the time, so I only needed enough to hold the chamber while I extracted the Gearworks- and I didn't think to give them orders for the eventuality that the handmaidens weren't alone. The few heartstones will be given a burial, as is normal for our kind, and we will negotiate with the Children for the dwarven prisoners of war."

"Also, I wish to apologize for doubting your prediction of the Gearworks' effects. After speaking with it, I was able to confirm your suspicions and was able to destroy it, fixing the flow of magic." You say. "I also created some more magic in this world, so we aren't dramatically affected. It should all balance out in the next century or so, now."
"I'm glad to hear that." He said. "I had to research for many years to find the Gearworks, after finding out it was the cause for the destruction of reality."
>>
>>21095752
He prefers water, I'm not sure we can be friends.

"Could you tell me more about your people? I must admit that I do not know much of the dwarves, you shroud yourself in mystery and it makes learning anything of you quite difficult."
>>
>>21095752
"I also wanted to inform you of the fates of some of your previous acquaintances - the other former players of The Game.

Eidolon had been hiding his consciousness in a construct that I uncovered. After inadvertently releasing him into the world, I was ultimately forced to stop him...permanently. I've confirmed that he is in the afterlife, happily spending time with his wife.

Gareth, the Wanderer, was killed after I discovered and spoke his true name. But not before he tricked one of my friends into killing Azariel. He chose to sacrifice his life to close the last demon portal. Since then, I have invited the other Kalak into my kingdom.
Even so, Gareth chose to continue to plague me as a spirit - until Dras'lea destroyed him completely. To the best of my knowledge, he no longer exists in any form."
>>
>>21095752
"I was going to look for it afterwards, but then I found it by accident. Just like always. I could have completed the Archeotecha by now if I'd wanted to. I wonder why that happens."
>>
"I also wanted to inform you of the fates of some of your previous acquaintances - the other former players of The Game." You say.
"Oh? I know bits and pieces, but to know everything would help."
"Eidolon had been hiding his consciousness in a construct that I uncovered. After inadvertently releasing him into the world, I was ultimately forced to stop him...permanently. I've confirmed that he is in the afterlife, happily spending time with his wife."
"That's good to hear." Tyr said. "Eidolon wanted to become some sort of god to bring her back, and I don't begrudge someone who wants to help their loved ones."
"Gareth, the wanderer, was killed after I spoke and discovered his true name, but not before he tricked one of my friends into killing Azariel."
"I never liked that one." Tyr said. "Gareth's only motivation was eternal life and the subjugation of all people."
"Azariel chose to sacrifice his life to close the last demon portal. Since then, I have invited the other kalak into my kingdom."
"I always liked Azariel- he isn't like most wizards, he's fine with doing things the hard way."
He shrugged.
"Even so, Gareth chose to plague me as a wraith - until Dras'lea destroyed him completely. To the best of my knowledge, he no longer exists in any form."
"Good news indeed." Tyr said.

>Field too long!
>>
>>21095889

"Could you tell me more about your people?" You ask. "I must admit, that I do not know much of the dwarves. You shroud yourselves in mystery and it makes learning anything of you quite difficult."
"That is how we like things, I'm afraid." Tyr said. "My people are xenophobic. On any other day, the halls would have been covered in dwarves, working, and building, in great cheer, but dwarves don't like to let them be seen by other nations. We're secretive."
>>
>>21095896
"That's a shame, I would have loved to see your people at work. And it seems like it might put a damper on trade negotiations and the thought of setting up a Dwarven embassy in New Arcturus.

I've been wondering this since I first heard of you. What is it about wizardry that so irks you?"
>>
>>21095896
"That's a shame. I suppose the other nations you share the continent with haven't been very nice."
>>
"That's a shame." You say. "I would have loved to see your people at work. And it seems like it might put a damper on trade negotiations and the thought of setting up a dwarven embassy in New Arcturus."
"Not all of my kin are like that, I admit." He said. "Some would be willing to speak with you, if you wished... but others are so secluded that they don't speak even to other dwarves."
"I've been wondering this since I first heard of you. What is it about wizardry that so irks you?"
"Wizardry is a practice that breeds... laziness." He said. "A wizard needs just speak a few words, and have power that other beings have to work towards. They don't even need to invent their own spells- they can build on the backs of the great, taking ancient knowledge and acting as if it was something they built on their own. They gain power without earning it. That is why it irks me."
>>
>>21095992
"I suppose someone could say the same thing about Talents, especially Sorcery. I suppose it's because of that thought that I have worked so hard to create a kingdom and learn swordsmanship.

I have met a fair number of wizards, and a great number of them are far from lazy. The ones I am close to work tirelessly to improve their craft, create new fields of knowledge within wizardry or expand existings ones, and to improve the lives of others."
>>
>>21095992
"Really? Odd. Every wizard I know has put considerable effort into crafting new spells and refining old ones. Casting spells without the use of glyphs or gestures or words. Combining disciplines in new and innovative ways. And that's not even taking into account the years of effort that go into just learning to use those same ancient glyphs in the first place."

"And then we have Romulus, who goes to ridiculous lengths to solve problems without the use of magic."
>>
>>21095992
"It's hard work to learn wizardry, you know. A blacksmith can just make a sword, but I can't. He doesn't even invent his own techniques to refine the ore or forge the metal, he uses ancient knowledge. But he worked hard to gain those skills, and as he builds on the knowledge passed down from his forefathers, and then passes it down to his children, technology gradually improves and makes the world better. Same with wizards. I don't think I've ever met a lazy wizard. Except maybe that elf we came across when we first entered the continent."
>>
"I suppose someone could say the same thing about Talents, especially Sorcery." You say. "I suppose it's because of that thought that I have worked so hard to create a kingdom and learn swordsmanship."
"Not at all. Talents are... how much one knows themselves. A talent is strength of character, which is just as significant as strength of someone's craft, or strength of arm." He said. "Sunder, here, is the testament to my own strength of character- it is my talent, manifested into an artifact."

"I have met a fair number of wizards, and a great number of them are far from lazy. The ones I am close to, work tirelessly to improve their craft, create new fields of knowledge within wizardry or expand existing ones, and to improve the lives of others."
"Because the wizards you know are all Azariel's children." Tyr said. "I respect that kalak, I truly do, because he does exactly what you just said. They work at their wizardry, they hone it like any other craft... but the elves, and the humans in the provinces... the wizards there learn a few spells and use them for everything imaginable- not to help their people, and they don't practice for their own craft, but they use their spells only for themselves and for their lords. They never improve- they don't even try to. When I met a human wizard using magic to make a woman love him, that is the moment my anger at wizardry was born. You pay attention to the most exemplary, most powerful wizards, but you don't see the lesser ones."
>>
Refining this:
>>21096073
"Perhaps, then, we should outlaw ironmongery. After all, blacksmiths don't even need to invent their own techniques - they ban build on the backs of the great, taking ancient knowledge and using it as if it was something they built on their own."
>>
>>21096094
Then perhaps what is missing is a force to hunt down these rogue wizards, something that transcends nations to enforce law. A council of sorts.

Also down voting >>21096096
anything that would tern this conversation into an argument is bad politics.
>>
>>21096094
"I have a strange habit of meeting and befriending exceptional people whether they be wizards, knights, craftsmen or bears.

That man you speak of, him being a detestable person has to do with who he is, not what craft he took up.

One of my plans for the future is to set up a university for wizardry in New Arcturus, to pass down the teachings of Azariel. Besides, there being more wizards and it not being such a restricted skillset ought to mean that those who never improve will be soon replaced by those who actually dedicate themselves. If any of your people are interested in learning wizardry themselves, in turning their efforts to it in the same way they work at their carving of stone, I would love to accept them."
>>
>>21096094
"I suppose that may be true. But the only court wizard I've met was Romulus, and he's not lazy. The first elf I met in this continent, he had pioneered a blood magic crystal thing. It was horrible, but it was work. I do find it hard to believe that people that lazy had the dedication to learn wizardry in the first place."
>>
>>21096174
add fueled with his own blood to that. don't want the guy looking evil.
>>
>>21096189
Well he was kind of evil.
>>
>>21096094
"So you hate wizardry because it can be abused. Should I disband my guards, then? Their authority can be abused, too."

"Or do you hate that they learn one or two spells - which typically takes considerable effort - and then use the skill they have earned, which is sufficient, without reaching for more?"

"There are detestable individuals to be found anywhere, if one looks hard enough. In all walks of life. There are lazy nobles aplenty, but should we just up and destroy the nobility? There are corrupt Guardsmen, so should there be no Guard? There are Journeyman blacksmiths who never work towards Mastery, so should we outlaw ironmongery? There will always be journeymen and failed apprentices who get drunk and fight. The wizard you so hate was the failed apprentice, or the drunken journeyman."
>>
>>21096196
He was fairly evil, but not quite baby kicking evil which is what using others blood would be.
>>
Guys, fuckin' relax. Tyr has an opinion. An opinion that doesn't really affect us in any way. Yet you're wanting to argue about it.

I mean, I know this is the internet and everything, but it's really not necessary to debate him on this. It accomplishes nothing.
>>
>>21096246
Changing his mind so that he's less prejudiced and more accepting is a good thing. Everyone should love each other in happy rainbow Ishelda land.

We are being nice. "Not being nice" is killing him for the threat he represents.

You'll notice my posts contain no kind of attack, personal or otherwise.

"I have a strange habit of meeting and befriending exceptional people, whether they be wizards, knights, craftsmen, or bears." You say. "That man you speak of, him being a detestable person has to do with who he is, not what craft he took up."

"So you hate wizardry because it can be abused." You say. "Should I disband my guards, then? Their authority can be abused."

also at some point remember have our elf friends help the one good elf wizard over here
>>

Didn't we already give the wizard one?
>>
>>21096312
Fucks sake guys, chill out, the only thing you're doing is patronizing him.
"Your right, I'm getting too passionate for this topic. However now I kinda want to make some sort of magic law enforcement organization."
>>
>>21096346
Bite me.

That said, yeah, we probably should give him a ring.

That said,
>>21096312
"True. I suppose we're...both rather close to that particular issue, so to speak, aren't we?"
>>
>>21096290
How does the opinion of a man who lives on another continent affect the people we know, exactly? Changing his mind isn't going to change his policies as a ruler, it isn't going to prevent people from using, enjoying, or even abusing magic. He even specifically said that the Kalak were an exception, and that he really likes and approves of them.
As far as I can tell, the only thing arguing with him about it does is potentially anger him.

And hey, I'm sorry if you're feeling put off for shooting you down like that - but Exabyte has a disturbingly common habit of taking suggestions that I don't agree with if I DON'T speak up.
>>
>>21096312
"Well, ok. I suppose it doesn't matter. Are there any dwarves with magic? I would be interested in meeting more of the hardworking wizards you approve of."
>>
>>21096451
He doesn't approve of wizards at all, remember?
>>
>>21096417
>He even specifically said that the Kalak were an exception, and that he really likes and approves of them.

>your *wizard* lover
>Using wizard as a venom-filled insult against a kalak without even knowing her
He's prejudiced, plain and simple. And he's prejudiced against an awful lot of the people we're close to. It may not affect people now, but destroying wizardry was his goal in the Game remember. Just because the thing with the Gearworks wasn't part of that doesn't mean he's given up on it.
>>
"You're right, I'm getting too passionate for this topic." You say. "Are there any dwarves with magic? I would be interested in meeting more of the hardworking wizards you approve of."
"There is a hermit, far below us, who studies magic, and I seem to recall some sort of order of wizards being started, provided it was governed by dwarves I trust, but I don't know of anyone else right offhand. The dwarven nation is large, and there are many people here, hiding out of sight. Even as overlord, I cannot pay attention to everything."
>>
>>21096487
He said he approved of wizards who actually worked, like Azariel. And he said his prejudice doesn't affect his policies as overlord so he should allow magic here.
>>
>>21096487
What quest have you been reading?
>>
>>21096497
He didn't know she was one of the Kalak right then, and in fact he HAS given up on it in favor of simply requiring high standards for his own people.
Fucking relax.
>>
>>21096500
"It seems like a rather difficult job. How does someone become Overlord of the dwarves?

Do you know any particularly outgoing dwarves that would be willing to spend some time in New Arcturus? I think that such exchanges could turn into something positive for both of us, leading to trade, closer bonds of friendship, embassies, exchanges of knowledge and so on."
>>
>>21096417
Now that he's said -explicitly- that his personal politics won't influence his conduct as a ruler, I agree with you.
>>
>>21096549
>He didn't know she was one of the Kalak right then
That's kind of the point. Hating her without knowing anything about her. Prejudice. What I was saying.
>>
"It seems like a rather difficult job." You say. "How does someone become overlord of the dwarves?"
"There are many factors." He said. "Talent, skill in crafting, heritage, intelligence... I was nominated by the guild of masons, and the other guilds accepted me as overlord, which I rule until I erode."
"Er, how long does your kind live?" Lewin asked.
"As long as it takes for us to get killed." Tyr responded. "Ever since the age of stone changed our flesh to granite."
"... Tell me more." Kaliel said, suddenly. "About this... age of stone."
"Soon after we arrived in this land, our forebears realized something- that dwarfkind wouldn't reproduce quickly enough, and we would go extinct. So we crawled, into the heart of this mountain, and embraced it, becoming part of it. Since then, we dwarves have been made of stone, and we won't die until the mountains do."
"... Anything else?"
"That's how the story goes, I'm afraid." He responded.
"I see."
>>
>>21096626
Unless there's anything else - offer him a comm ring and thank him for his time and hospitality.
>>
>>21096626
Talk to him about the coming civil war among the elves and what we have seen from them. Offer to broker a mutually beneficial peace treaty.
>>
"Thank you for your time and hospitality." You say, getting up and off of the chair. You bow, and pull a ring from your inventory.
"It was no problem." He said. "I was going to take some time off to heal... but now I get to spend my time off healthy, thanks to you. Anyway, if there are any problems of significant importance, simply contact me."

He took the ring, and examined it.
"It is a communication ring." You say.
"So I see."
He nodded, and got to his feet himself. "I'll lead you back to the entrance." He said.

As you walk back out into the hallway, you see a large steel ladder where there wasn't before, and a dwarf up top, replacing some of the worst-rotted paper with freshly written ones, and tyr simply walks past.
"Erm, overlord, if you do not mind me asking, but what are those?" Lewin asked. "They're all written in what has to be dwarven..."
"Stories." He said. "As our stories hold up our culture and society... the stories hold up our ceilings, as well."

Eventually, you reached the great door, where you see a pale blue dwarf standing there, with small bits of bright green moss on his face.
"I'm seeing our visitors out." Tyr told him, and the guard nodded, opening the door.

You make your way back outside, and walk toward the Jormungandr, as you walk into the stealth magic. Lewin, Jeanne, and Kaliel make their way back up... and immediately, Kaliel makes her way belowdeck.

"Where to now?" Ell asked.
>>
Hmmm, well on the one hand we should probably get back to New Arcturus soon, but on the other hand we said we'd help out that elf with freeing is people as soon as the business with Tyr is resolved.
>>
We still haven't found anything about the assassination attempt. I'd guess it was the handmaidens hearing about a powerful magic user, but we don't actually know.
>>
>>21096881
I think he's already well under way on that by himself. So I don't see any reason to stick are neck out for that.

>>21096902
This however I would like to look into more. If nothing else but to confirm that.
>>
>>21096853
Back to Theusill's tower, I think, to let him know about the changed situation, and then back home.
>>
>>21096921
We could do that through the ring.
>>
>>21096919

Wouldn't hurt.

>>21096902

Personally? Based on the one elf's comments, I'd guess it was an elf trying to frame the Children. Possible Theusill, now that I think about it. Crap.
>>
>>21096935
It could hurt a lot.

From sounds of it there's quite some towers to be taken down each with a powerful wizard and small golem army. Let him deal that.
>>
>>21096955
I meant it couldn't hurt to -look into it-.
>>
"Back to the Children." You say.
"Really? Right away." Ell said, touching the control crystal. "Why, if I may ask?"
"To look into the issue of that attempted assassination." You say, suddenly remembering the goldsteel dagger in your inventory.
"Right, of course." He added. "And it seems with all of our extra power, we can go as fast as Sparrow for a short time- but we can only do it once every few days. Do you want me to do that now?"
>>
>>21096988
"That isn't necessary right now."
Then go see what Kali's up to.
>>
>>21096988
"No, there's no rush. We should save that so we definitely have it if we need it. Aeriel, do you have enough spare energy to portal us some of the way?"
>>
"No, there's no rush." You say. "We should save that so we definitely have it if we need it."
"Right." He said, and then continued taking apart the captured golem, trying to combine parts with his own armor.

"Aeriel, do you have enough spare energy to portal us some of the way?"
"I'm trying to recharge so that we can get all the way back." Aeriel responded. "I can do small, short range translocations, but I can't do a portal right now, I'm sorry."
You nod to him.
"It's no problem." You say, and make your way belowdeck. You find Kaliel hunched over a table, examining Mala's book.
>>
>>21096988
No, it would be best to save that for when we really need it.
>>
>>21097091
She's busy investigating rock hard men.
Let's go find Abel we haven't really talked to him since the fight and he was worried about us. Or Raz or Lewin or anyone who we didn't spend the whole last thread talking to.
>>
>>21097091
"What are you looking for?"
>>
>>21097091
Let's go find Raz. I want to find out what Kali said in the kalak language last thread.
>>
>>21097153
Agreed. Raz or Lewin or both!
>>
You nod to her, but she doesn't seem to notice you. Instead, you make your way back abovedeck to Raziel, currently laying back, sunning her wings, eyes closed.
"Ishelda." She said, giving you a smile and opening her eye a fraction. "It may be getting to be winter back home, but it's still warm here."
>>
>>21097091
Do you think you will find anything? The dwarves look more like a talent manifested then a fleshcrafted race.
>>
>>21097195
"Hey Raz. What does *noise here* mean?"
Transform to kalak if necessary.
>>
>>21097195
Hello my angel. We must be furthur around the world then I thought.

What do you think of the people of this land?
>>
>>21097196
The Dwarves pulled a Kobolds and embraced the Mountain as their foreverboss.
>>
"Hey, Raz. We must be further around the world than I thought."
"Probably." She said. "Aeriel refuses to say exactly how far, for some reason, but I think that's because he's wary of getting the numbers wrong."
"By the way, what does, um, this mean?" You ask, and replicate the sound you'd heard from Kaliel this morning.
Raziel started giggling.
"That's your name. Well, the closest it can get translated to." She said. "Why do you ask?"
>>
>>21097244
"Kal said it and I didn't think to ask her what it meant."
>>
>>21097244
"Just curious. I heard Kal say it earlier. What's her name?"
>>
>>21097244
Kaliel had a little bit of a freakout earlier. This is just between you and me, mind. I don't think that she realised that humans don't live for anywhere near as long as kalak.
>>
"Just curious." You say. "I heard Kal say it earlier. What's her name?"
"Her name is, uh, One second." She closed her eyes, and gave off a little tune, only a bit more complex than your own.
"But Kal never talks in kalak, if she can help it." Raziel said. "Even when she was younger. I think it was because the Gift was some 'magic' language, and she thought it was cool."
>>
>>21097311
I'll have to get her to teach me.
>>
>>21097311
Giggle. "It is cool."
>>
You giggle. "It is cool." You say; you remember the first time you arrived here. You started speaking your new language almost by accident, never noticing that you'd learned a brand new one before remembering your past in Arcturus.
"I'll have to get her to teach me."
"You need to be kalak to say most of it properly." Raziel said. "But if you can talk Kaliel into trying to teach you, best of luck!"
She suddenly gave you a sly grin. "If she doesn't want to teach you, just do that tailfeather dance she told me about before. She'll be putty in your hands."

"Really? What did this Gearworks say about him?"
"He's fighting gods. Well... A god." you say. "But I don't know why, exactly."
"A god?"
"He's teamed up with a god to fight yet another god, yes."
"... I'm not quite sure how to respond." Raziel said. "Because, well, if the 'lord' all of the spectres talk about is a god, then that explains so much..." She said, tapping her hand against her chin. She laid back down, sunning herself some more.

>>21097677
"Well, he may have been coaching it in Arcturian terms for my understanding, but if I understood him correctly - then those gods are also concepts, and by extension, passions."

The gearworks told me that gods are just spirits, that hang onto a concept. The knight, the scholar, and the thief fight the farmer.

"The Farmer... The Lord, the Reaper. Same person." You add. "Azariel's teamed up with The Knight against him."
"Good luck, Azariel!" Raziel cried, and pushed her hand upward, toward the sun. She grinned. "I'm glad he's okay. I've really been in a good mood lately."
>>
>>21097677
"Yeah the Lord is also known as The Farmer or something, and is the most powerful god. Or wait, The Gearworks mentioned four guardians or some such that would take action if he messed too much with reality."

"It certainly seems like it." You say, putting your armor into your inventory and laying back. "Could it be... loooove?" You ask, teasingly.
Raziel quirked her lips, and gave you a wry smile. "I wish." She said. "It's just a good day. It's just that I feel more comfortable, lately. Like I've found a place for myself."

"That's fantastic!" You say, and give her a wry grin of your own. "I'm surprised you find anywhere comfortable with those gangly things sticking out of your back."
"These things are comfortable, okay." She said. "I mean, yeah, they have to be spread when I'm laying on my back or they get cramped... but look!"
She sat up, and closed her eyes.. and the feathers puffed out. "Now that they're not all crunched down and deformed, I can make them into fuzzy blankets."
She gave you another smile. "And... well, do you remember when my Passion awoke, back on Arcturus? I finally found out why I was able to do that. It has to do with the nature of necromancy."

>>21097889
"Mmm, Passions are Talents based on how close you are to the Concept of your magic. Or something."
>>
You roll over, facing her.
"Ooh, do tell, do tell." You say.
"Necromancy isn't magic for the dead. Well, it is, but that's just.. something to the side, not part of the main school. The school itself is about... memory. The past. Remembering history. Honoring it. Bringing it *here*."
She gave you a wider grin.
"Which, when I ran into those ruins... was all I wanted. It was fate, I think."
>>
>>21097930
"Well, for the Kalak passion is supposed to be analogous to a talent, and Tyr said a talent is strongest when being true to oneself. So it makes sense."
>>
>>21097930
Fate, or maybe the past wanted to be heard.

Diviniation would then be the opposite of necromancy, looking forwards.

Hey Raz... I don't suppose you'll be able to tell how long I'm going to live?
>>
>>21097930
"Oh, that explains why the monument I made used necromancy. Remembering the past. Sure is convenient being able to do it without having to understand it."
>>
"Fate." You say. "Or maybe the past wanted to be heard."
"Maybe." She said. "And I listened."
"Hey, Raz... I don't suppose you'll be able to tell how long I'm going to live?"
"I can't, I'm sorry." She said. "I don't know much about how fast people age, but I know that you can't just shapeshift age away. Even if, say, Fellwind became that kalak baby for as long as humans live, his- well, her- fuzz would get gray, and she'd get weak."
>>
>>21097991
Be sad for a bit.
>>
>>21097951
>Diviniation would then be the opposite of necromancy, looking forwards.
But you can also look in the present with divination, like scrying and our compass. And 'mancy' means 'divination' anyway. So necromancy is just a subset of divination dealing with dead stuff, not it's own school of magic.
>>
>>21097991
Do kalak go grey?
>>
>>21097991
"Yeah... I think Kaliel only just realised how short human lives are."
>>
>>21098023
I prefer to think of it as how long kalak stick around for.
>>
"Do kalak go grey?"
"Ruby, sapphire, and clay do, usually." She said. "Clay go a sickly pale yellow, I think, but onyx, marble, and slate don't. You saw Azariel- he was old and crotchety, but he never really got gray."

She looked back to her own wings, where sparse tips of the feathers were gray.
"But they don't do it like mine are." She said. "... I still don't know what's up with my wings."

"... I think Kaliel only just realized how long kalak lives are." You say, finally.
Raziel's eyes meet yours.
"I hadn't... considered that." She said. "My life seems awfully short, and I'm over... twice how old humans last. I... don't know how I'm going to react, when ... when you all get old..."

She closed her eyes, and the two of you look up at the sky, again, light shining on your skin.

And you have to have 'lived' for a long time, have a lot of experience to use future-divination - something that is much easier to achieve using past-divination like us with the orcish tower. It segues in perfectly. Know the past to understand the present, understand the present to predict the future.

She closed her eyes again... and then sat up, gave you a look, and pulled you into a hug.
"Don't worry." You say. "I'll end up immortal, eventually, and there's always magic."
"Eidolon had to stick himself in The Mind to make himself immortal, and Gareth had to tear his own identity from himself." She said, finally.
>>

"Yeah, but trust me, there are other ways. Better ways. Just waiting for the right time."

I'm not opposed to saying that, but given the lengths people go to in this setting to attempt such a thing (Gareth, VQ, Ediolon) I'm not sure it's going to be easy.

"Maybe." She said. "But be careful. This is somewhere that every wizard ends at, eventually, and some of them do... horrible things. They say that blood magic lets you become immortal, and you don't want to accidentally use it with sorcery."

"Hey, accidentally using my own life force is completely different to destroying somebody else's. I wouldn't do that. And spending your own life force to become immortal makes no sense."

"Blood magic does some amazing things. Terrible, but amazing."

"At any rate, I'm only sixteen. There's plenty of time." you say.
"That's a good point. We have years. And it's possible that Dras'lea knows how, if she is, well, you, like you keep saying. Now if we could only get her to divulge that information..."

There was a god thing?
>>
>>21098311
That's the point. Blow it off non-chalantly with a simple explanation.
>>
>>21098319
The Gearworks, if we told it to run we'd have pretty much infinite magical power, all of the magic of the void would be ours to command while starving out the rest of the worlds. Only Sorcery would work, we'd be god.

>>21098300
"I'll have a talk with her when we get back. Make sure to remind me to pick up the World Key on the way home."

>>21098300
"She'd better be damn grateful after I got her emotions back for her. But even if I die, you can still talk to me. Being dead doesn't seem to bother Azariel much."

>>21098319
The gearworks, sucking up all magic ever, destroying the current gods, putting us in their place...
You know, that thing.
>>
>>21098319
Yeah, The Gearworks could have absorbed all the magic everywhere and made us the one and only God.
>>
>>21098315
We probably should just keep that to ourselves.
>>
"I should hope she shall. I'll have a talk with her when we get back. Make sure to remind me to pick up the World Key on the way home." You say. "But even if I die, you can still talk to me. Being dead doesn't seem to bother Azariel much."
"With your power, I wouldn't be surprised if you became a wraith." She said. "Speaking of wraiths, I found some old, old draconic runes that should block them away, along with other ghostly stuff, and some spells. Hexagrams or something."
>>
>>21098392
"I promise I'll only stick around after death if there's still things I need to do."

Why would one want to block away wraiths?
>>
>>21098404
Because Gareth. Also, that mean we'll be sticking around forever to do Kal
>>
>>21098404
Because some of them might not be nice wraiths. Setting them up in our vault would be useful to prevent another avenue of intrusion.

>>21098392
"Well if I still have things I want to take care of I'll stick around. I'll probably want to keep an eye on New Arcturus."

>>
>>21098392
"Being a wraith doesn't seem a very fulfilling existence. I wonder how hard it is to become a god the proper way."
>>
>>21098420
Wraith=/= Spectre. Wraiths are at least semi-corporeal. They're also usually stronger than Spectres in terms of power.
>>
>>21098420
Gary could possess people. We find a chicken or something, enter it, then shapeshift into a human. Problem solved.
>>
>>21098420
>Spectres are conjured spirits who are able to be semi- or completely corporeal.
>Ghosts are conjured spirits who don't have or aren't given enough power to be corporeal at all.
>Wraiths are unbound spirits who are usually able to be semi- or completely corporeal.
>Geists are unbound spirits who don't have enough power to be corporeal at all, and they end up having to devour it from other geists or spirits- or even from the living- in order to stay in reality. (There haven't been any of these in-quest and there probably won't be)
>Unbound spirits are much more powerful than the conjured variety, as they came out of the afterlife on their own power, as opposed to the necromancer.

"I promise I'll only stick around after death if there's still things I need to do." You say.
"Nope." She said. "You're only sticking around if you have *nothing* to do. You already devote all of your time to matters of state, and you're constantly overworking yourself. If you stick around, you're only sticking around to... I don't know, have tea with your grandchildren. And do more dances for Kal. I just plain won't let you. I'll ward away the tax rooms, and Gehenna's office."

"You can't ward your queen!" You say, pouting. "I'll just bring ghost-kristoph with me."
"The wards aren't magical." She said, and quirked her lips. "Kristoph wouldn't be able to effect them. The runes themselves aren't even in draconian, they're from something even older."
"You should also ward the artifact vault." You say, suddenly. "Not for me, but it's just a good thing to secure."
"Yeah, I'll get to work unburying the rest." She said. "With Sker's divination and my own necromancy, we've been able to see the past in different places across the world... but I have to wait for his visions."

"I found out that solu'nox was a white dragon." You say. "That eventually left this world for arcturus, became the human Dave, and founded the dynasty."

"Well, ok. Actually I should probably tell him about the dragon thing, I'll see you later."
>>
>>21099286
"Hello my half dragon father!"
>>
"So much fun, teasing you, Raz. Really, too much." You say, and give her a grin.
She frowns back at you, and you harrumph.
"Well, I'm going to stop pretending to tan, and talk to him, then. Thanks for the chat, Raziel."
"Yeah, yeah." She said, her cheeks still pink. She nudged you with a wing as you got up.

You make your way over to your father, and the knight had already left, as he leaned back on the ship's balcony, looking out into the distance of the scrublands.
"Hey, dove." He said. "What's up?"
>>
>>21099293
Might be more like 1/8th now.
>>
>>21099304
Guess what? We're dragons!
>>
>>21099293
It's a lot lower than one half. It's 1/2^n where n is the number of generations. Actually, considering the amount of intermarrying within noble families it'd be higher by a decent margin, but it's still tiny.

>>21099304
"Our great, great, lots of greats, Grandfather was a dragon. That's where we got the Sorcery thing from. So when I was a kid running around calling myself a dragon and terrorizing the staff I was actually right."
>>
>>21099304
"Well, I found out something I thought you'd be interested to know. Dave was originally from this land. He was born a white dragon called Solu'nox.

>>21099306
Not even that. We're talking hundreds of generations. And Dave was shapeshifted to be 100% biologically human at the start of all that.
>>
>>21099319
-Kshnk!-
That's the sound the sacrifice makes when it breaks.
>>
>>21099304
"I found something interesting about Dave. He was actually Solu'nox, a dragon. I don't think it'd be wise to call either of us dragons, however, because of the sacrifice."
>>
>>21099352
Oh right, let's not do that.
>>
"Well, I found out something I thought you'd be interested to know." You say.
"Oh?" He asked.
"Dave was originally from this land. He was born a white dragon, called Solu'nox."
"... Wait. Wait. What?" He asked.
>>
>>21099370
"It's true. Dragon. That's why we have white hair. And sorcery, that too."
>>
>>21099370
"Yep. Dave was a dragon. Which means that we're... don't actually say it out loud. It could break the sacrifice."
>>
>>21099370
Mhmm, The gearworks was his creation, designed to give sorcerers near infinite power. But it drained magic from worlds, and created the demons from my mother's people. So I had it destroy itself.
>>
>>21099395
seconded.
>>
>>21099370
"The Arcturan royal line is descended from a Sorcerous dragon. His name is either Solu'nox or Dave, why he chose Dave for a name I have no idea."
>>
"It's true." you say. "Dragon. That's why we have white hair. And sorcery, too." You say
"Which means that we're... don't say it out loud. It could break the sacrifice."
"That'd mean demons up in our everywhere." He said, and you nod.
"Why he chose Dave as a name, I have no idea."
"Technically it was Sorcerer-King David, which had a bit more oomph than 'dave'." Abel said, and chuckled. "That is rather interesting, though."
>>
>>21099436
"Though me being completely unable to tan is from my mother's side. I have a very strange family tree.

Did you have fun on this little outing?"
>>
>>21099436
"Tell me a story."
>>
>>21099436
"Isn't it? Dave's father was called Anu'ba. All I've found out about him is that he was a rubbish king, which isn't terribly inspiring."
>>
"Though me being completely unable to tan is from my mother's side." you say. "I have a very strange family tree."
"You do." He said, and ruffled your hair. "But you are who you are because of who you are. Not from your heritage. Even if you were born in a homely little village instead of a castle, to two completely human parents, you'd still be spectacular."

"... Tell me a story." you say.
"A story?" He asked. "I have the ones I've already told you... I could tell you one about the time you were two and ran about crying out that you were a dragon, complete with blowing small bits of fire at people." He said, chuckling. "Terrorized the staff and set one of my favorite tapestries on fire."
>>
>>21099541
>two
>Whoops, I meant six.
>>
>>21099541
Ooh, that sounds like fun, tell me that one!

Although I don't know why they believed me, real dragons can't breathe fire.
>>
>>21099541
"In my defense I was completely right.

How many tapestries did I destroy as a kid?"
>>
>>21099541
"Sounds like they just couldn't handle the truth."
>>
>>21099585
>>21099562

>>
>>21099608
Come suck my cock, fate. Most of the demons should be getting better now the Gearworks is gone anyway. We can handle a couple of little invasions.
>>
"In my defense, I was completely right." you say. "How many tapestries did I destroy as a kid?"
"Only the one." He said, chuckling. "Though you did hide behind them all the time to try to find secret doors, or to spook someone. Mostly me, or your embroidery tutor. Merlin took to spooking you back, eventually."
>>
Does Sanctuary have any secret doors? I think it should have some.
>>
>>21099635
"Tell me more about Merlin before he was my tutor."
>>
"Tell me more about Merlin before he was my tutor."
"Well, that's a rather complicated story." He says. "I'd snuck out of the castle... I was around your age, I think, and I was down in this tavern looking for... um...nothing in particular." He lied, badly. "And then I ended up drinking with this old man. We ended up stumbling around, rather drunk, when these muggers came out of a back alley. The man started warbling and ranting in some alien tongue, waving his hands about, and the muggers figured he was insane. The moment they were gone, he started giggling. Yes, giggling. Apparently, he'd been trying to cast a spell on them, but was much too drunk to get it right. Anyway, the next morning, the royal guard found us lying in a haystack in the stables, and my mother got the story from me, before hiring the man- Merlin- as the court wizard. I didn't even end up with any barmaids, though." He said, grumbling.
>>
>>21099748
Giggle, "That's hilarious. Do let me know if you find any hedge wizards the next time you're at a tavern."
>>
>>21099748
Giggle a bit.

"I'm trying to imagine you drunk, it's a strange thought.

Speaking of drinking, I need to show you Swamp Brew, it's a amazing drink, lovingly crafted by the Lizardmen. I'm sure you'll like it."
>>
>>21099789
Yes. Do it.
>>
>>21099800
And we shall include Raziel, for reasons.
>>
>>21099808
Sexy reasons. But she doesn't drink it any more.
>>
>>21099832
Queens orders. Also, it's a victory drink! One for everyone because we managed to save magic, and stop a war between the childeren and the dwarves, and sort out childeren politics.
>>
>>21099845
We still haven't stopped the war between the elves and the dwarves. We should kind of contact them and call that off.
>>
You giggle. "That's hilarious. I'm trying to imagine you drunk. It's a strange thought."
"I didn't want to be a bad role model, so I cut back on drinking when you were a child." He said.
"Speaking of drinking, I need to show you swamp brew." You say.
"Swamp brew?" He asked.
"It's an amazing drink, lovingly crafted by the lizardmen. I'm sure you'll like it." You say, and give him a grin.

"... That smile is mildly terrifying." He said.

You take that as a yes, and turn to Raziel.
"Raziel, let's all have some swamp brew! As a victory drink!"
Raziel looked from you to your father, and her lips quirked, and she gave the two of you a wide smile. Something... mischievous.

"Okay." She said, grinning.

>End of thread!

Incestuous threesome imminent.
We better get Kal involved too, in order to avoid that.
>>
>>21099876
Beginning of next thread: You wake up with a terrible headache in your father's bed. Wait, that wasn't what was meant to happen!
>>
>>21099909
your father wakes up in the crowsnest with kristoph.
>>
>>21099901
Yes, we wouldn't want to cheat on Kal. Incestuous foursome is the only option.
