I just spent the past 8 hours on sup/tg/ reading every thread with the tag "trap". I want the next dungeon my party goes through to have a metric fuckton of harmless traps that will make them completely paranoid. Any creative ideas?

My party thinks that their boss, the person they are looking for, and twins travelling with them are Eldritch Horrors.

This is why everyone has a pole.
One holds ceiling-floor, the other the walls.

>>21072392
Poke one with your pole, either the spikes fall and crush it (and you press the other button with your other pole) or the door opens.
>>
Make a giant complex of traps that all squirt harmless water at anyone who triggers them, as well as one vial of antidote. Tell the party that one of the waters is deadly poison that acts slowly and invisibly.

Then, when someone kills themselves, have it turn out that the vial of antidote was the only poison.
>>

Holy shit...

I'm totally gonna use that!
>>
>>21072392
Press them simultaneously and run out the door before the spikes connect
>>
>>21072589
I take my shield and another party member's shield and wield both to cover both sides of me. Once I make it across the hallway, i slide the shields all the way back to the other party members.
Rinse and repeat.

>>21072589
that's just cruel and unoriginal. also OP asked for harmless traps
>>
>>21072823
the traps themselves are harmless, the party should not be drinking potions in dungeons without a reliable way of finding out what they are.
>>
Give them a status condition that's merely visual. It can be an illusion if need be.
It slowly spreads as darkness up somebodies arm but otherwise does nothing. It's cured after a week.
It slowly spreads through contact.
Watch how quickly the party members attempt to kill each other.

A chamber with an open barrel full of ten-foot poles. Old-school Gygaxian dungeon-crawlers will expect some kind of horrible trap anyway. New kids who play video games will be accustomed to the formula where you defeat the boss using the item you found earlier in the dungeon, and they'll be poking everything with ten-foot poles just like the old-schoolers.

I have kept my party in a similar trap for close to 3 hours. A simple square room, the door labeled: "This room has traps" Inside, is a large room with a single chest. There are 3 tripwires on the chest. After the first hour was up, they had finally made it over to the chest. And after carefully disarming the first two tripwires, checking for just about everything conceivable, they tripped the third, which opened the chest and gave them gold. Confetti rained down from the ceiliing. The chest would have opened anyways, but there wouldn't have been confetti.

One remedy involves a sizable cork.

Pressure plates that do nothing but move weights hidden behind the walls.

Tripwires attached to mechanisms that are...attached to nothing, in turn.

Statues with arms that can be manipulated. Manipulating the arms does nothing.

Enchanted suits of armor line a hall. Their heads follow movement, but otherwise they do nothing.

The floor drops out to reveal a four-foot pit.

Spikes erupt from the ceiling, stopping ten feet above the floor.

Magic mouths that scream something that sounds like an elder tongue but is actually gibberish.

A trapped lock releases a rush of smoke from the walls that conceals...nothing.

The floor of the hallway ahead is lined with innumerable skulls. One skull in twenty will scream when stepped on.

The seemingly harmless image of a comely young woman begging for aid suddenly transforms upon the approach of the PCs in the image of a medusa....that is also harmless. It's just an image.

The floor of the next room feels horribly unbalanced and sets the PCs stomachs' swaying. Breaking through the floor reveals it to be a single large platform placed atop dozens of coiled springs.

A door slides aside to reveal a door, which slides aside to reveal a door, which slides aside to reveal a door, which slides aside to reveal a door...

Breaking a tripwire on the threshold of a door causes a massive scythe to sweep across the threshold of the door across the room.

A massive boulder comes rolling towards the PCs and bumps against them harmlessly. It's made of paper stretched over a wood frame.

Opening a door at one end of a hallway causes the door at the other end to immediately slam shut.

When questioned, a skeletal corpse does nothing but make agonizing puns - "I'm no healer, but PRIEST to meet you!" "Why was the fighter so afraid? He was a WORRIER! AHAHAHAHA!"

The last trap thread I should have posted in, because I have posted in so many. Anyways OP here are a few questions.

1. What is the psychology of your party? Do the scare easy? How much do they value their characters? How often have they encountered traps?

2. How fatal do you need the traps to be?

What I have experimented with are false traps and what I like to call, "The Forlorn Hope" Trap. The second one is harder to defeat and is more prone to ruin a party psychologically. You might also lose friends from it.

A False Trap, is still a trap: it just comes in multiple varieties.
a. Dead trap: A dummy that is there to confuse the party or change the parties route.
b. Double Trap: a dummy trap that disguises a real trap. An example would be a boulder suspended carefully over a bridge with suspicious floor tiles, which causes the party to take the nearby bridge which has a gust of wind triggered whenever anyone steps on a tile halfway in.
c. False Motive trap: a trap that looks like something, and is well disguised as something, but is in all reality something else. A trap that looks like a puzzle that needs to be solved to gain entrance, but in fact the puzzle pieces are covered in a contact poison.
>>
>>21074384
No, wyrms. Specially bred to be docile.
You only get them at specialist pet stores.
>>
>>21074394
do you have an example of a contact poison? I can only think of extremely potent LSD

Which could easily be the best contact poison
>>
>>21074431
You can make a nicotine contact poison. It kills though.
>>
>>21074431
Poison Ivy / Oak is the most common contact poison you'll run into on a day-to-day basis.

Oh wait: Capsaicin. Pepper spray.
>>
>>21074471
oh god I'm fucking retarded

I still think a high dose of LSD is the best though
>>
The Forlorn Hope Trap is only as effective as your party. It requires your entire dungeon be based around traps like it otherwise your players will call bullshit on you.

Due to most Parties being angry murder hobos who will extend all efforts to complete a goal, so long as those goals coincide.

The trap must have bait that appeals to most of the party members, but not so much that it is obviously a trap. Once the party members are separated each piece of bait sets off a trap, that is unrelated to that particular party member. It instead causes problems for the other party members and their routes back to the party later on, or triggering traps outside the dungeon. The point is that the traps are delayed to that particular party member and later cause problems for other party members, systematically setting off other nearby traps and events thus causing all sorts of problems for the party.

It depends on the system. If you are going for realistic and want to go with that plant angle http://www.thepoisongarden.co.uk/ is a good place to start. Also certain types of nettles. If it's DnD Black Lotus Venom can kill with a few lucky rolls, if your going for the biological angle well,

http://youtu.be/waa2ucfgVgQ
>>
>>21074394
We have 3 players. Player 1 is already paranoid and uneasy, but easy to provoke. Player 2 is lazy and overconfident. Player 3 is essentially a money whore artificer. All are pretty easy to manipulate
>>
>>21074653
That's the tough part, is making the party split. You really don't need the party to split for it to work, the whole point is to cause the party problems later than sooner.
