You are Redbeard the Cleanshaven, 6th most feared pirate in all the skies. Below you sprawls the seaside city state of Newport. The town isn't new, but it's in good repair: the large stone buildings in and around the fort are free from overgrowth and the wooden buildings of the town can certainly weather a storm, as they prove every monsoon season.

It's still a few months from that though, and the sun lights up the town and the beach through clear skies. Here and there throughout town you see splashes of bright blue, paint on doors and walls, strips of cloth tied around arms and faces, some sections of the city seem to have blue markings on all the gates and archways into them.

Beyond the town the untamed tropical mountains stretch, off towards the horizon as far as you can see, even from your vantage point. Behind you is the ocean, mountains turning to islands to the south.

Your ship, The Cursed Dream, has made port at one of the nicer berths in the docks courtesy of your latest mission. From up here you can see your crew working, moving things too and from the ship.

You've made your way to the highest point in town, the top of the airship tower. It's quiet up here, and you can hear the wind. You aren't quite alone, there's someone climbing up the tower now.

"Captain, I found you at last. You know stairs aren't easy for my kind."
It's Safiya, your helmsman. You've managed to get into a bit of a misunderstanding, she thinks you're taking her on a date. She's dressed up for the occasion as well, replacing her usual dark coloured clothes is a red and gold sari. She's even showing off the runic markings on her arms, which are usually kept hidden. Must be the heat.
"Some officials have come from the guard, they're here to collect Tal'Rea and pay her bounty. Illa told me where you'd be."

You look towards you ship again, and see that a sea nymph and some rather grumpy looking elves from the local guard are talking to your draconic first mate, Illandra. You should be able to catch the angel as she's leaving if you head down now.

"So, uh, Captain. Where are we going to go?"

[ ]Take Safiya shopping... for ship supplies and upgrades, after picking up Emma.
[ ]Take Safiya to the bars... along with Illandra, so you can start recruiting.
[ ]Take Safiya to <your choice here> on an actual date... and risk Lasciel finding out.
[ ]<Any other option>
>>
>>20992287
[x] Act like a captain, tell her that you're glad that she came with you, clear the misunderstanding and tell her your schedule. First thing on the list is getting her to unwind.
>>
>>20992287
[X]Take Safiya shopping... for ship supplies and upgrades, after picking up Emma.
An make sure that the crew is told to stay well away from anywhere that has blue painted in it.
This entire city should be under quarantine; don't let anyone forget that this is a plague city and we need to be careful.
>>
Well, Lasciel is a demon right? Surely she wouldn't be put off by a little polyamory...
>>
>>20992342
She would be, she's very possessive of us.
>>
>>20992418
You can't just promise a lady a date and then not go on it.
>>

"Shopping!" Her eyes light up, but fall quickly as you continue, "We lost a cannon in that last fight when the catgirls blew it up, so it needs to be replaced."
"I suppose with the bounty there's a bit more money so we can buy some upgrades. The Dream could use some more guts, she's been struggling to catch some of the faster sail powered ships downwind."
Of course, she still thinks you're doing this for her.

You head back down the tower to find Emma helping the catgirls unload the ship. However you also find you are just in time to see Tal'Rea leaving, a dozen or so of your catgirls in tow. She waves you over as you arrive, and Safiya slinks off to talk to Emma.

"Redbeard. I never got to formally thank you for you're hospitality." She offers you her hand.
The sea nymph official glares daggers at you from behind the angel's wings.

>Oh come now, this IS a harem show after all.
>Romancing your crew is like a loyalty mission. There will be benefits later.
>>
>>20992617
Oh well if there's benefits then fucking romance her ass up a goddamn tree.
But we should probably let Lasciel know and tell her that it's really not any kind of a THING and that she shouldn't worry about it and that OBVIOUSLY there won't be any shenanigans.
>>
>>20992581
>what do?

>I'm only going to multi choice occasionally.
>you act after every post unless it has a "cont." at the end.
>>
>>20992667
Politely bid her farewell and move on.
>>
>>20992581
Take it, but then pull her into a hug and whisper an apology for the circlet in her ear and wish her good luck. Then get all demanding that she get the fuck off our ship.

Tsundere to the max, we've got a goddamn image to maintain.
>>
>>20992699
Why would we hug her or apologize? i was under the impression we couldn't stand her.
>>
>>20992718
She gets under our skin because she doesn't understand that life is hard for people who aren't blessed. We felt shitty about breaking her family heirloom though, to the point where it let to a spat with Lasciel.
>>
>>20992581
Take her hand. Then take a knee, and kiss it, and then launch into some over-the-top lamentation of her leaving our poor ship, how we worry for the purity of our soul in her absence, and how hard it will be to leave the fine city of Newport knowing that we also move farther from her shining light.
>>
>>20992581
Take her hand and kiss it, as we're supposed to play to the gentleman-pirate image that we've spent so much effort to cultivate.
"Perhaps the next we meet, it will not be one so burdened with business."
>>
>>20992617
Dat so? Still doesn't excuse for lack of morals. Clear misunderstanding, but note that It's not an unpleasant one.
>>20992699
Seconding this. What happens in private stays in private and we gotta be the 6th scariest pirate around.
>>
You take her hand and bid her a kind farewell. You draws her hand to her lips and plants a kiss on it. You feel... different. Something changed, something good.
"Till we meet again."

And then she was gone.

>Pirate tricks are like fate points.

You feel sneakier, more elusive.
>Haha, Fooled You learnt!

You arrive in the merchant district. There are stalls selling fruit, grains, jewelery, livestock, even one attempting to hire out catgirls. You laugh a little at that, you already have 4 of them that you don't recognise following you.

>every time you make port, you gain a number of catgirls. The actual number depends on the quality of the port, and your reputation there.

You could probably buy anything here, for the right price.

>You roll dice based on the 'girl on the guns, or at the wheel, but the capability is set by the equipment.
>What sort of upgrades are you looking for?
>>
>>20993110
>arclock
>basically powerless
Now by this do you mean that it provides its own power? Or that it's a pea-shooter?
>>
I'd like to look into possibly replacing our:
Negative Gravity Crystal, Diesel Turbines, and Reactor.

What sort of upgrades are available for those, and how much do they cost?
>>
>>20993157
>powderless*, my mistake.
>Uses magic instead of gunpowder. Much less likely to explode when a catgirl lights the wrong end.

Also, that's meant to be 12 slots per side, not overall. There is alot of unused space on the ship. But more equipments weighs you down, which makes you slower.
>>
>>20993110
Replace the lost cannon, obviously, and maybe find something for the rear.
And we totally need some sort of grappling hook or harpoon guns. A pair on each side?
>>20993188
We could just upgrade the reactor, not replace it. It's plenty powerful, just unreliable.
And maybe just add another diesel engine, if we have space.
>>
>>20993195
Okay, so our canons are really only at half capacity then? Add a list of affordable canons to >>20993188
this list then.
>>
>>20993195
Can we move all the cannons to one side when engaging?
>>
>>20993244
>But more equipments weighs you down, which makes you slower.
No point having ALL THE GUNS if we can never catch anything.
I think 6 on each side is enough. We have a frickin' lightning gun for blasting suckas.
>>20993261
You really want a bunch of catgirls to shove big heavy cannons around during battle? Not to mention the balance issues.
>>
>>20993288
Hey, if they're cheap and they don't add that much weight, why not get 'em?
>>
>>20993288
In that case we better introduce some proper gunner drill and counter the weight of the cannons with ammo and barrels.
Full firepower with no extra weight is surely worth any effort.
>>
>>20993261
>You can move them before a fight, but not during. Not without rolling for it, at least.

You have 4800 gp in available funds. You could spend up to 1000 more, but this would drastically reduce the time before you needed to go raiding again. You currently have one months supplies.

You look around for replacements, a few noteworthy ones stick out:

Stability:
High powered jet thrusters - Very fast altitude change, but uses a lot of fuel - 1800gp
Balloon floatation device - Slow to change altitude, replaces mast, surprisingly resilient to damage - 250gp
Positive gravity crystals – Strictly better then your current equipment – 3600gp
Inertia cancelling cabling – distributed throughout ship, similar performance to negative gravity crystals, requires metal hull – 2300gp

Propulsion:
Full sails – high crew needed, speed dependent on wind – 1100gp
Inertia cancelling cabling – as before, but designed to move you, instead of keep you aloft – 2400gp
Exotic turbines – a curious relic from prehistory, powerful, but if destroyed it curses nearby crew, causing strange sicknesses as they age – 3500gp

>more as I type it up.
>>
>>20993372
Jet thrusters look good for an emergency escape/reposition device. Can we just add them, without replacing anything?
>>
>>20993372
Could we theoretically get both of the inertia cancelling cable types? Or are they mutually exclusive?

I say we should totally get those turbines.
That gets us the speed we need to force fights at our terms and escape them otherwise.
With jet thrusters to be faster vertically, none shall escape our wrath!

I'm not real comfortable with subjecting our crew to what is most likely radiation poisoning.

>Yes, those are extra attachments. They use the same 'fuel' as your reactor and diesel turbines

>>20993471
You can get both, for a reduced cost since they use the same systems. You will have to refit your hull, which will cost extra and take time.

>>20993372
Electric turbines – drain more power, unlikely to fail – 1200gp
Magic turbines – uses no power, cannot be repaired by catgirls – 1000gp

Weapons:
Powder cannon – uses cannonballs – 500gp
Arclock cannon – uses cannonballs – 650gp
Magic bolt throwers – uses bolts of various types – long range, weigh less – 450gp
Mechanical bolt throwers – uses bolts of various types – long range – 350gp
Remote force applicators – uses no ammunition, short range – can push or pull craft, or be used as blast weapons – 400gp
>>
>>20993570
>Remote force applicators – uses no ammunition
I like the sound of these. could we cram 1 or two in?
>>
>>20993570
I assume those cannon prices are per individual cannon?
What would be the total cost if we were to get both cabling systems?
How short is short range for the Remote Force Applicators? Like, 5 feet or 50 feet?
>>
>>20993562
>requires metal hull
We'd have to replace THE ENTIRE SHIP to use it. I think we should put it on our wish list for after a few more jobs.
>>20993570
>magic turbines
DO VERY WANT
I presume the mechanical throwers can be used as harpoon guns?
Suggest list:
1x Arclock cannon (650)
2x Mechanical Bolt Throwers (+700, 1350)
2x Remote Force Applicators (+800, 2150)
2x Magic Turbines (+2000, 4150)
And maybe see if we can get someone to overhaul the reactor to make it more reliable.
>>
>>20993611
>maximum range of 30-50 meters depending on wind conditions and local magical fields. Strength increses as distance decreases.
>prices are per gun, guns require 3 crew unless otherwise mentioned.

>>20993601
>They take the place of side guns.

>>20993372
Armor:
Wooden – 1000gp lower hull, 1100gp upper
Steel – increased weight and protection – 1500gp lower hull, 1700 upper
Reactive – Lighter, destroyed when hit – 800gp lower hull, 850gp upper
Runic – magic, extra protection, lightweight, vulnerable to magic – 1400gp lower, 1400gp upper

Reactor:
Exotic reactor – powerful, but curses crew when damaged or destroyed – 1700gp
Magic reactor – lightweight, stable, hard to repair – 1600gp
Fuel reactor – easy to repair, can ignite if damaged – 1500gp

>anything else you want to see?
>>
>>20993703
But we already have a steel plated hull? Or does the plating not count?
>>
>>20993789
see >>20993570
>You will have to refit your hull, which will cost extra and take time.
>>
>>20993703
>Yes, mechanical and magical bolt throwers can be used to harpoon things, as well as shoot solid bolts, or ones rigged to explode, or magically imbued ones with a variety of effects. These cost extra.

>>20993789
>The steel plating would count, but you would also have to drill extensively through the wooden hull to fit the cables in. It's possible, but expensive, time consuming and of only marginal benefit. The system doesn't perform much better then standard systems, but it is a lot more resiliant to damage, since it is distributed.
>>
Okay, now with what I feel is sufficient information, I'll second >>20993703
>>
>>20993845
Oh, the magic throwers can harpoon as well? Get those instead of the mechanical ones, since they're only 100g extra each.
>>
>taking this >>20993703 with >>20993962's adjustment.
>To clarify the Magic turbines will replace your current Diesel turbines.

You make your choices and your coffers are much lighter.

As you make arrangements, you overhear a dockworker yelling at someone.
"I'm not a catgirl, I'm a WERETIGER. That means you actually have to PAY me for the work I do."

You ask Emma if she knows of anyone who can work on the reactor. She says that she'll ask around and see who she can find.

Looks like you still have a few hours of daylight, and the town will be active for a while into the night anyway.

You promise that you'll take Safiya shopping in just a moment, and make your way back towards the warehouses, where you overheard the catg- Weretiger arguing.

You find her pacing up and down outside a warehouse with 'Samuel's maps, charts and adventure gear' on a sign. She's rather fit, with bold stripes down her back and tail. She isn't wearing very much, in fitting with the local tropical weather. It does make her look a bit like a catgirl though.

As you get closer she stops and throws what looks like a small tin of tuna through one of the glass windows.
"That's not a fucking week's worth of pay you arse!"

Safiya clings closer to you.

[X]Drop Natasa off at the ship and let your crew take care of her.

Treat with one lady at a time and do it properly. As we drop her off at the ship, make a comment to the effect of, "I'll check in you later."
>>
You explain her job as you head back towards the ship, almost carrying Natasa by the time you get there. You've been hungry before, and you know it doesn't affect you quite this quickly.

"If you excuse me Natasa I have pressing appointments to deal with. Make yourself at home and feel free to raid the larder, I'll talk to you more later."
She leans close to you and whispers, "I'll look forward to it, Redbeard. Safiya, I look forward to working with you!"
You leave Natasa in the care of Emma, making sure that she knows she's not a catgirl, and needs more then 5 cubic feet to sleep in.

Safiya still seems a little bit annoyed.
"I'm a bit hungry myself, Captain. Where are we going to go now?"
>Free choice
>>
>>20995618
"Well, did you see any restaurants that caught your interest?" Whatever she wants.
>>
>>20995618

"Of course, Safiya. My apologies for the distraction. I saw believe I saw an excellent looking steak house a ways back. Would that be to your liking?"

I assume lamias like meat.
>>
"Well, did you see any restaurants that caught your interest?"
"Last time I was here there was a noodle shop that had these dumplings I really liked, could we go there?"
"Wherever the lady wants."

You head to the restaurant, but stop outside the door. There's a blue mark above the door, but it still seems to be open. There's quite a crowd inside.

Safiya face falls. "Oh, I... I guess we should go somewhere else then. I really wanted to show you the food here, I thought you'd really like it."
>>
>>20995725
"Next time we dock here, I promise."
See if we can't find something somewhat upscale to make up for it.
>>
>>20995725
Yeah, we don't really want to have to ask the stuffy angel to cure us.
>>
>>20995725
"It's the thought that counts isnt it? Dont worry, we've free birthing here for quite some time. We'll just find someplace safer to eat for now, the little angel will have this place cured in no time."

Winning smile, WINNING SMILE!
"Of course, this just means i'll have to take you out another time as well to come here."
Promice of another date with the Capt'n will get her hook line and sinker
>>
>>20995771
>hook line and sinker
More like fishing rod.
>>
"Next time we dock here, I promise." You flash her a smile and she can't help but return it. "I believe I saw an excellent looking steak house a ways back. Would that be to your liking?"

"Yes," she says slowly, "that's would be alright." She looks thoughtful for a moment.

You take her arm and lead her to the steakhouse. There's no blue markings and you get a seat at the back, with a nice view of the restaurant and the street outside.

A human girl takes your order. You put on your man-face and order a large steak, and Safiya asks for a chicken salad.

You sit in silence for a little while, waiting for the food to arrive. It's a little bit awkward. You don't know much about Safiya, she rarely talks about her past.
>>
>>20995833

Start off with some small talk while enjoying a glass of wine. "So tell me a bit about yourself, my dear. We so rarely get to enjoy each other's company outside of a working environment."

If she seems reticent to talk about herself, change the subject to something else. If nothing else, we can always talk about life on the ship, as we know it's something we have in common.
>>
>>20995833
Let's get her to open up about it then.
"So what did you do before you wound up on my ship?"
>>
"So tell me a bit about yourself, my dear. We so rarely get to enjoy each other's company outside of a working environment."You wave the waiter over and order some wine. She frowns at Safiya when she thinks nobody's looking.

"What did you do before you wound up on my ship?"
"Oh, it's not a very interesting story, I'm afraid. I didn't like where my life was headed, so I tried to change it. I worked on a few trade vessels, found I was good at flying, then the last one I was on had the engine blow out, and we were on that island until you picked us up. We were stuck there for weeks, it was a good thing we were carrying wheat and rum."

The serving girl comes back with your wine and a pair of glasses. "There's been a slight problem with the salad, so it's going to be delayed, our apologies, miss."
>>
>>20995996
"And how in the skies, may i ask, Do you screw up a SALAD. Chicken, leaves, those little crunchy things, That's all there is to it and there's a problem?"
>>
>>20996030
Seconding this.
>>
>>20995996
My bigotry senses are tingling!
We shall have the catgirls steal all their supplies this night.
And have the biggest fucking chicken salad ever!
>>
>>20996030
Hmm, not sure if this is something to get worked up over... is there bread? Something for her to eat while she waits?

Unless getting worked up over slights is part of our 'character'.
>>
>>20996030

Thirding. I'll add, "Miss, I'm here with a lovely lady. don't make me ask for the manager and waste everyone's time. Get the salad, properly made, and there still may be an extra coin in it for you. Bullshit me again and I'll make you regret it."
>>
>>20996069

Well, I think that (female) human bigotry toward monster girls is established, and I like to think that we're protective of our crew.
>>
>>20996069
Slights on ourselves? I doubt we'd really care.

Slights on the lady we're out on a date with who is also our subordinate? We'll fucking shank this bitch and send her back to the goddamn kitchens to be roasted ala suckling BITCH.

WE ARE A GODDAMN PIRATE AND THEY SHOULD BE THANKFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE THE (wo)MAN WHO TAKES THEIR TOWN AS A CONVENIENCE TO BE USED INSTEAD OF A LARGE TARGET TO PRACTICE THE GUNS ON.
>>
"And how in the skies, may I ask, do you screw up a SALAD. Chicken, leaves, those little crunchy things, That's all there is to it and there's a problem?"
"That's not true at all," she replies, "there's also onion, and bacon and you have to get the dressing right or the whole thing isn't worthwhile."

"But the problem is that we've just got word that our chicken supplier has taken ill. We don't really want to take any risks, so we've sent for some fresh supplies. It won't take too long, and I can give you a drink each, on the house."

Safiya picks at the tablecloth. "No, it's fine, I don't want to be a bother, maybe I could just get something else."

Your steak arrives. It's thick with a curl of fat and sear marks across the top. A thick mushroom sauce has been poured onto it, the scent makes your mouth water. Safiya stares into her lap.
>>
>>20996151
Offer her our dish. Refuse to eat anything until she's eating.
>>
>>20996170
This, but also keep an eye on the food coming out of the kitchen. If any chicken comes out, shit's going down.
>>
>>20996151
I'm afraid you'll also going to need to get her an appetizer for making her wait, what would you like, something with shrimp?
>>
>>20996170
>>20996197
Seconded. But we should still totally steal their stuff later.
>>
>>20996151
We don't eat until she eats. If she gets no food, demand the manager and make a loud scene asking why we can't get food in a fucking restaurant.
>>
You offer your dish to her. "Here, You can have some of mine."
She looks conflicted, her eyes darting between the meal and you. "I'd love to... But it's beef, that would be wrong, I'm sorry."

You turn to the girl. "I'm afraid you'll also going to need to get her an appetiser for making her wait, what would you like, something with shrimp?"
"That would be nice."
"Shrimp? Yeah, I can do something with shrimp. This is instead of those drinks, mind." The serving girl wanders back towards the kitchen with a thoughtful look on her face.

The steak's delicious, beefy smell wafts towards you. Your mouth begins to water in anticipation. The roast vegetables on the side look great as well, peppered with herbs, their crispy golden edges just waiting to be bitten into.
>>
>>20996341
Before we dig in or anything, maybe we should politely inquire as to why she thinks eating beef is wrong?
>>
>>20996341
NOT A GODDAMN BITE UNTIL SHE GETS HERS. Dig a fingernail into our palm if we have to. Distract her with smalltalk.
"I wasn't aware you don't eat beef, may I ask why not?"
>>
>>20996341
Is she Hindu analog religion or something? Ask her why she cant eat beef and then playfully (PLAYFULLY) chew her out for letting us drag her to a steakhouse when she cant eat beef.
>>
>>20996389
No way. The poor girl at this point wouldn't be able to handle even playful teasing. If it turns out its her against her religion or something, respectfully apologize!
>>
"I wasn't aware you don't eat beef, may I ask why not?"
"It's how I was raised. We were taught to respect cows as the mother creatures that they are. They provide milk and labor. To eat them is a waste."
The reasoning reminds you of an old religion. But the only place you can think of that would still practice it is far to the east. They are intolerant of outsiders, and people rarely leave.

Your eyes fall to the steak, sitting on it's delicate bed of potatoes. It's just sitting there, getting colder and colder, you should really eat it. You dig a fingernail into your palm and look back at Safiya, who seems concerned.
"Are you alright captain? You look pained. I know your don't like talking about your parents, I shouldn't have said such a thing."

"No, that's not the problem. I've come to terms with that.

It's the steak, I feel like a jerk for taking you to a steak house, and despite how delicious it looks, it'd be unacceptably rude for me to start eating while you were waiting."
>>
>>20996492
"No no, if i didnt want to talk about it I wouldn't have asked."
A steak that big wouldnt cool down that fast, we're good for a while while we wait for our dates food.
>>
>>20996492
"No no, it's not that at all. And please, call me Charles. Neither one of us is on duty right now. I just feel like a bit of an ass for taking you to a steakhouse."

"No no, if I didn't want to talk about it I wouldn't have asked." You reassure yourself that the steak isn't going to get all that cold. It hasn't been that long, surely. "And please, call me Charles. Neither one of us is on duty right now. I just feel like a bit of an ass for taking you to a steakhouse."
"Charles," Safiya sounds out the name, "I like it." She licks her lips.

"And don't worry, I don't mind if you want to eat steak, I just won't watch." You both look to the steak, sitting in the middle of the table.

The waiter comes back with a plate of prawns and put it in front of you. "Barbecued shrimp, turned out pretty well, I think. The chicken should be done by the time you finish these. Enjoy."

Safiya takes one and bites the end. "Oh! These are delicious, you must try one."

Take just one, then dig into the steak.

You take a single shrimp, and give it a nibble. It's nice, but you are craving bigger things. You pull the steak towards you and brandish your knife.

Carving into it reveals a succulent red centre, juices leaking out. A fresh wave of creamy mushroom sauce leaks down over your slice of meat. You spear a potato on the end of the knife and stick the whole thing in your mouth. There is only one word to describe it: Delicious.

You hungrily dig into the meal, carving away haphazardly. Safiya is torn between amusement and horror at the spectacle of you eating. She starts giggling as you sate your hunger and sit back into a more leisurely rate of consumption.

You continue to eat and drink and talk about things that don't matter. Soon enough Safiya's salad appears, and country to your fears, it seems just fine. You overhear the wait-girl clock off early, and head home.

After almost an hour, you find yourself sitting in the lounge area, with a drink in one hand and Safiya curled up beside you, leaning on your other shoulder.

"Charles," she says to herself, then giggles, "I think you'll always be Captain to me."

Today's thread was a pretty good one, even if uneventful. My advice would be to throw in more obstacles. Not necessarily conflict per-say, but simply things that we have to overcome.
That being said, don't fall into the classic pitfall of not knowing what to do if we fail to overcome such an obstacle.

ALERT! AL-! Oh, sorry. No reason to be paranoid, this isn't MGNQ.

Ugh, people arent going to making tons of references to that shitheap in these threads, are they?

Where are you getting "tons of references" from?
