Groggily, you awake. With a yawn, you attempt to stretch...and meet resistance. Your wrists are bound, your arms spread out and apart over your head. You try to crane your neck to see, but you have trouble doing so.

"What in the...?" you think aloud.

You realize you're laying on your back, a warm blanket drawn up to your neck. You try to move, but find that your ankles and waist have been similarly bound. The room is dark, with only faint pale light from a hidden source lighting the ceiling. Faint click-clacking disturbs the otherwise perfect silence of the room. You don't think you're in danger, but you're a little confused. You still haven't quite woken up. As time passes, nothing seems to happen.

Doing your best to clear your mind, you try to reach out. [Socks? Are you there?]

Immediately the click-clacking stops. You see a shadow pass in front of the light. [Ah, Cleona. You have awoken.] You see Socks suddenly come into your field of vision, "standing" over you.

[Um, what the hell is going on?]

You sense surprise over the link. [Don't you remember? Interesting...] He reaches for something just out of view, probably a pencil from the scratch-scratching.

[Can you get out out of this?] you ask, pulling at one of your wrist bindings.

[Oh, of co-]

"Socks? Socks, what's going on?" You hear a familiar voice, followed by a familiar face. Dr. Alice Wackett appears, stopping next to Socks. "Oh, Cleo! You're up!"

Socks ignores Alice, undoing your binds.

[Thanks,] you say gratefully, massaging your wrists. As you look at what you're laying on, you realize you weren't on a bed. It looks like some sort of high tech...thing. Your binds don't look like any binds you've seen before (or imagined or heard described), more like those things mad scientists use in their experiments on people.

You're not much of a drinker, yet... "Man, what did I do last night?" you ask Alice.

Alice blinks. "You don't remember? You said something about Socks needing help with some research. I've been stuck here trying to make heads or tails out of his alien scritchscratching he calls Math while you've been sleeping nice and cozy in some sort of...sleep study."

Well, you certainly don't remember that. The last thing you remember was something about...

"Oh crap! What time is it?" you yell, scrambling for a clock.

"It's about 7 AM, Cleo. Why?"

Oh thank goodness, you're not late. It's only the second day of training. Let's see...Miranda has the morning, you're covering for Rae in the afternoon, Yetta's got the evening...Rae left last night...

"Just making sure I didn't miss anything today. Man, what the hell did I help with?"

You turn to Socks. [So what exactly did I do?]

Socks' tentacles twist in excitement. [You don't remember? Cleona, I needed more experimental data regarding our link and your...what did you call it?]

[Magic?]

[Yes, that. Unfortunately, I needed a long period of observation. Near the end, I began applying basic psionic signals and measuring your response. If it has tampered with your memory, though...perhaps we should no longer conduct such experiments.] Socks' concern radiates from his mind to yours. The certainty of the feeling is comforting.

But it's strange. The only thing you think you can't remember is last night. Maybe you're just groggy. Either way, it's just the short-term that seems to be affected. You tell Socks as much.

[I still prefer not to place your mind in any more danger than necessary. I...am sorry enough about this,] Socks says. Again, you can feel his intent over the link: he truly feels guilty for this.

[Don't worry about it. I volunteered right?] Right?

[I'll make sure to process this data properly before asking for your assistance again.] Socks bows a bit, then returns to his device, its bright light still the only such source in the room.

"Well, what was going on?" Alice asks, reasonably sure that your silent conversation is finished.

"Well, apparently he just needed fresh data on Magic and their...psionic thing, so he monitored me while sleeping. He sent signals to my head near the end, which probably screwed with my memory a little bit." You shrug. "He won't ask me to help again until he can be sure he won't screw with it again. He's feeling pretty bad about it."

Alice smiles. "Aww, he's pretty sweet for a Martian."

"Sure," you say, ignoring your stomach's rumbling. You're not sure if you ate anything last night, but you're certainly hungry now.

"Alright, I'm going to go grab something to eat and check on the new witches," you announce, heading towards the exit of Socks' workshop.

"Wait!" Alice cries. "Ask Socks if he still needs me, I'm going crazy staring at these symbols."

[Socks, you still need her help?]

[Oh, no. I can handle it from here.]

"You're a free woman, Alice."

"Thanks."

You hit the chow hall with Alice, grabbing a few fruits, a sandwich, and a bottle of apple juice, a particularly special treat. Waving goodbye, you head down the hallway to the pool room, allowed a moment to think.

You've been through a lot lately, and it keeps getting piled on you. Capture, escape, flight, assault, and now teaching. You've met plenty of new faces and haven't seen the old in awhile. Your mother, a witch herself, too proud to ask for aid when the depression hit and the person that instilled a good work ethic in you. Your father, a hardworking man who had to deal with all the good and bad that came with marrying a witch. Your brother, your aunt and uncle, your fellow enlistees before the Substriker program. You miss them, but you'd miss them more if not for Rae, Miranda, Yetta, Socks, and Alice.
>>
>>20979921

And the new faces keep piling up. As you take a bite out of your sandwich, you think about your class. Natsumi Ogawa, Elizabeth Boser, Clare Harton, the others whose names escape you at the moment...and most interesting of the group, Odessa Rothrock. You just have no idea how you're going to get them properly prepared for combat.

A pair of daggers staring at the back of your neck interrupts your thoughts.

>>Hi Kotters!
>>
Casually, you lean against the wall and look back. There she is. Lt. Elizabeth Boser. Incredible that you can sense her stare. She walks in the middle of the group of trainees, walking back from wherever to the Pool room with Miranda leading. You return her stare cooly, as though Boser's stare were nothing to be concerned about. Boser doesn't seem purturbed by your return fire. If anything, she seems emboldened by it. She begins to make more of a show out of it, trying to make sure her fellow trainees know what she's doing...

"Oof!" You can hear Boser cry out from all the way here. Someone shoved an elbow into Boser's stomach, breaking her stare. Boser looks around angrily, trying to find who did it...then quickly changes expression. Someone's giving her the evil eye: Natsumi Ogawa.

As they walk by, you catch a bit of conversation.

"...do that again," warns Natsumi Ogawa's cool voice

"I'll do what I want!" Boser replies animatedly

"And I will do what I want in response..."

You can't believe this. "Sub-Lieutenant Ogawa, Lieutenant Boser, please, step aside for a moment."

Miranda looks back at you, confused, but continues leading the rest of the group when you give her a nod. Boser makes like she wants to leave, but Ogawa places a firm hand on her shoulder.

"Yes, Chief Kuykendall?" Ogawa asks professionally.

"I couldn't help but overhear some of your conversation just now."

"Yes, ma'am," Ogawa responds. Boser does her best to look away without being outright disrespectful to your situational authority.

"Sub-Lieutenant Ogawa, I'm not sure what you were saying, but certainly know you weren't threatening your fellow Witch."

"Of course not, Ma'am."

"Doing so would be very serious and action would be taken immediately."

"I understand, Ma'am."

"Good." You're not sure what to make of Ogawa. Her responses were quick, firm, and coldly professional. You turn to Boser.

"Lieutenant Boser. I understand that my beauty has captivated you. If you should wish to further examine my eyes and the back of my head, feel free to meet me in my office."

Boser takes offense. "But I wasn't-"

"Are you saying I'm ugly?"

"No-"

"If it's something else, again, feel free to meet me in my office to discuss it. In private. We're Witches and military servicemen, not children." It's your turn to send shivers down Boser's spine. You have a horrid feeling that she might try something else in the future, but for now you've got her pinned down.

"...Yes, Ma'am."

"Good. Now get back to the group. You've got a lot of work ahead of you."

The pair jog to catch up with the others. You sigh. Damn MacArthur for making you babysit these girls before they go off and get themselves killed.

You are currently in charge of the overall training of this group of witches. You are to make sure they are capable of combat in the Substriker.
You are currently investigating the Rothrock "curse." Rae left last night to a nearby witch academy with which she has been associated with in the past in order to turn up clues.
You possess a strange magic/psionic/something link with Socks, the nature and extent of which is unknown. It could be key to understanding psionics, magic, and perhaps more. Socks' current research targets psionics and magic.

You nearly decide to turn around and try to do something productive with Alice, but you keep heading towards the pool. Your feet carry you at a slow pace, allowing you to nearly finish eating as you enter. Miranda's got them running exercises that, as she described them, are like that game "Telephone." The trainees are to try and understand what Miranda has told two of them. Then those two try to pass it on to the next pair, and so on. Finally, each chain of Witches tries to perform the maneuvers Miranda originally told them to do. It's supposed to emphasize the importance of good, clean communications when underwater. Magic radio isn't always available, and you need to still be able to understand each other in those situations.

You watch a little bit as the chains move in uncoordinated fashions, executing maneuvers that Miranda certainly didn't order. It's almost comical, but the realization that these witches will be going into combat shortly afterward kills your mirth. Slowly they get a little better, no longer doing things that end up running them into walls, but they still seem to be losing a lot of information as the order travels down the line. When Odessa gets to lead, they don't seem to get anything at all.

You sigh. You're going to have to figure out what to do with Odessa soon...

Is she using simple code phrases to describe the maneuvers, or plain english? Reducing noise-to-signal ratio will help a lot.
>>
>>20981342
She's starting with simple hand signals that the witches need only replicate, then increasing difficulty with verbal orders as well, forcing the witches to think about how to convey what must be conveyed.
>>
>>20981236
[x] Watch quietly until it's your turn to teach

>>
Idea:

Instead of giving complicated orders via the telephone game, have each witch memorize maneuvers as "maneuver 1" and so on. That way you can just say "maneuver 1" instead of a long list of words liable to get mixed up.
>>
You decide to sit back and let Miranda do her thing. Odessa's rotten luck might be an issue, but overall the process seems to be working. With the exception of whichever Witches has the misfortune of being behind her in the chain, Odessa is the only one having difficulty executing maneuvers. It's the most bizarre thing you've ever seen, actually. She always seems like she's doing it right, but something goes wrong: her striker cuts out for a second, leaving her out of position; a freak current caused by a nearby Witch throws off her orientation; her helmet somehow manages to turn, blocking half of her peripheral vision and necessitating that she stop and readjust it.

That's just not right.

It continues for some time, causing her performance to be left behind while the others all start to get the hang of things.

"Alright, current leaders try to communicate your own orders. Remember, this isn't just so you can pass some test. You need to do this so you don't get killed out there. Improve for yourself, if no one else," Miranda instructs them, then heads over.

"What's up, Cleona?" she asks, curious.

You point to the pool. "See that?"

"See what?"

"Just watch Odessa."

Miranda watches for a couple cycles. The two chains slowly get out of sync with each other, so that one has run through five times and the other only four, but otherwise have no problems...except for Odessa. Again, it appears as though she would be performing admirably if not for freak occurrences. Slowly her overall performance actually gets worse. A worrying look grows on Miranda's face as she watches.

"I can't believe this, Cleona. Nothing I've seen has ever been like this."

You nod. "I know. I still didn't quite believe it before, but...hell, she might be right. Maybe she is cursed."

Miranda bites her lip. "This is very worrisome. Look, if it'll help you help her, I can take over Rae's class for you. Hell, take Odessa out and start throwing things at the wall, see what sticks."

You shake your head. "You've already got your hands full with your own stuff. I couldn't do that to you."

Oh my. This is truly a big day for SuWQ.

Let me pull this straight from her document:

Odessa has short, brown hair and blue eyes. Her skin is slightly lighter than “olive.” She often wears long skirts and formal top-wear, due to her lack of confidence in her looks. She stands 2” below Cookie. Her familiar is a bat.

If you require more info, feel free to ask. As for the target of the kiss, I'll leave that up to either you or the other readers.

>I now have a picture of bats in my SuWQ folder

You feel torn about it, but...you accept. "Fine," you concede, "you can take Rae's classes if you're so eager."

"Hey, it's not like I enjoy more work, Cleona. I just feel like I should be helpful," Miranda pouts.

"Yeah, I know. Just giving you a little crap to help me feel better about giving in. Thanks, Miranda. I appreciate it."

"Yeah, no problem. Just don't waste it."

You nod an affirmative. "Don't worry, I've got a few ideas." Smiling, you head to the phone bank. Sure it's a little early for Rae to check it, but you feel excited. You've got an idea, and if Rae can start digging in the direction you want, you can get started. Making sure no one is looking, you rip a page out of an overly-large public directory and pull out a pen. Might as well brainstorm while waiting, right?

You write down some of your ideas:
Odessa's familiar is a bat
Bats are nocturnal
Odessa never does magic at night
Odessa = Nocturnal?
Make her think it is night?
Only good at night?
Family = Bats?

Your thoughts are a little incoherent, but you feel like you've done a good job. This is something to go on. You've never heard of any curses, so you're a little wary to immediately attribute Odessa's troubles to a curse. You also haven't heard of any Witches only functioning well at night, but then again you've never heard of a Witch with a nocturnal familiar.
>>
>>20982923

It's all unexplored territory, which makes it exci-RIIING, RIIING, RIIING.

You leap to your feet. Surprisingly, she's right on time for her mid-day checkin. You pick up the phone.

"Rae?"

"Cleo?"

"Yes."

"Same."

Your greetings out of the way...

I really don't want to post more of her character sheet out in front of the audience here. Suffice to say that she lacks confidence and is thus probably shy. If you require more info, feel free to PM me on IRC. I'm James_Kotters at the moment, and can be found in #swq.

You may think I'm inflating the importance of this, but let me tell you that I never thought I'd get a random drawfag offer.

ALTERNATE THEORY

Bats are very sensitive to sound. How do we sense things underwater? SONAR.

I bet that the sonar is fucking her magic up something foul.
>>
>>20983060
And what about all the other stuff that happens OUT of the water?
>>
>>20983060
She's been fucking up all her life, and all her ancestors have been before her. This is the first time any of them have been sub-witches.
>>
WHAT IF.
WHAT.
IF.

Having to deal with six limbs has been fucking up her brain. No mammal has more than four. THE HUMAN BRAIN WAS NOT MEANT FOR IT.
>>
Last decision is a three-way tie. Given the flurry of activity in this thread, I'd rather not have to choose myself. If no one posts in the next five minutes, I'll go ahead and do so, but I'd rather not.
>>
>>20983107
Most witches can deal with a tail. And Marseille seems to handle eagle headwings, as well as a tail.
If Odessa gets 2 sets of wings, that's 8 limbs in total, which IS the most of any witch I know off.
On that though, squid witch? Tentacle monster and victim rolled into one!
>>
>>20982937
[x] What have you found out?
>>
>>20983107
WHAT IF
GUYS WHAT IF
Every time she has to do magic she gets flashbacks to all the bullies saying her headwings are stupid and gets really nervous and fucks up.
>>
>>20983192
>Witch
>being bullied

That would be like trying to bully the President's kids. Good fucking luck.
>>
[X] Tell me everything you know about Odessa's family and their familiars

Because we need to make sure our first unit of subwitches are capable.
>>
>>20983192
But she fucks up even when NOT using magic.
>>
>>20983211
No anon, you are the bullies.
>>
"So, you have anything concrete for me, Rae?"

"Nah," she says, voice distorted by the phone, "but I did dig up some interesting stuff on her family history."

You raise an eyebrow. "Oh?"

"Yeah. So her family got here with the first wave of colonists, back around 1788. Exiled or something, somehow got on the bad side of some powerful people."

You nod. "She mentioned something about that."

"Well, turns out before that they were extremely lucky. Real powerful players in the home country, you know? Then everything goes to crap and they're stuck in a penal colony."

"...You're not suggesting that Australia is doing it to them, are you?"

"Nah, then they wouldn't have been exiled in the first place." Oh. Duh. "Anyway, they were a major force behind the first Witch Academy on the continent. In fact, the place I studied at can trace its roots to their academy. Neat stuff. So, they start sitting nice and pretty even being stuck way out here..."

"And then it turns to crap again?" you guess.

"Yep. Essentially ostracized and kicked out of their own academy. Same story up until the present, where the Rothrocks are essentially a no-name family. Kinda sad, actually."
>>
>>20983447

"Hmm...Did you get anything on their familiars?"

There's a pause. "What was that?"

"Have you found out what familiars her family has?"

"Well, um, no. Why, do you need it?"

"Yeah, I think I'm on to something here. Find out what you can about their familiars. It's not essential to the theory, but could help me fine tune it and my future guesses."

"Alright. Take care of yourself, Cleo."

"You too, Rae."

You set the phone down on the receiver. Well, at least you have some background on the Rothrocks. Let's see...Miranda's handling the afternoon classes. That should give you enough time to prepare.

Tonight, you ride.

Odessa was very, very nervous. After all, what she was about to do could very well get her drummed out of service. Even if she was one of the rarest witches around, this sort of behavior just wasn't tolerated.

Unless the receiver enjoyed it, in which case it was practically standard operation procedure.

She held the package tightly against her chest, her heart beating strongly against it. Her knees started shaking as she heard footsteps approach, so she stomped on her own foot with the other to make it stop. This had to be quick.

CPO Kukyendall rounded the corner. And suddenly, Odessa was in her way.

Faster than she could think, the subwitch trainee grabbed her by the arms and leaned in, standing on her tiptoes. Her mind was blank as warm, soft lips were pressed against her own.

The lips were still there, both girls' eyes closed, one in fear and hope, the other a gut reaction to a something flying towards your head.
>>
>>20983810

The lips started moving, and light breaths were taken.

Someone dropped something fragile.

Odessa and Kukyendall both opened their eyes at the same moment, lips still locked together. More surprised at the noise than by the random act of lesbianism (more common than you'd think), the officer turned her head to see what it was. Odessa couldn't let that happen. Reaching down with her unusual familiar's traits, she grabbed Kukyendall's cheeks in her bat wings and pulled with all her might, bringing her back to the kiss.

Kukyendall stood dumbly as Odessa let go of her after a few more moments, then shoved a small box of chocolates into her arms.

“happyvalentinesdayilikeyoupleasedon'tcourtmarialmeohgodgoodbye!” She ran around a corner, tripped over a janitor's bucket, got back up, slipped on her wet shoes, then got back up again and ran to her room.

Kukyendall brushed her cheeks.

“... tiny hands?”

(30 seconds in open office. Wings on cheeks was too cute to ignore).
