You change directly into your flight suit- fuck it, you think- it's far from correct, but right now you could give less than a shit. Besides, it's supposed to be a day off.

Not that you're complaining about flying, but still.

The area around the flight line is crawling with security, marines and navy both, and you're stopped and your ID checked a half dozen times before you even get to your hangar.

Inside, Ice, Merlin, and Merlin's family, minus her sister, are talking with Viper and an older gentleman you've only seen once, on the 'chain of command' board back at OCS. The whole building hums with activity, techs and ground crew doing last second checks on your 'cat, as well as the girls' strikers. There's live ammo carts parked near your bird, and as the guards draw you to a halt, you watch as the ordinance techs begin feeding your cat 20mm ammunition.

The Marines on guard here aren't police- they're infantry. Full body armor and assault rifles- not a pistol belt with a baton. Bayonets fixed.

“They wanted to see ya, sir” The one checking your ID says, without taking his eyes off you.

You note that both Merlin and the old man are in flight gear, and there's a second tomcat parked on the ramp, Fuel lines hooked up. Notably, it's also armed- a pair of sidewinders and a pair of sparrows hang from it's wing glove pylons. The insignia on the tail...

“Good morning ladies, gentlemen” you say, walking towards them. “Sorry I'm late”

Ice steps in. “She was initially requesting an air force escort, but they can't provide one- their nearest birds are at JB Misawa, and they can't launch because of that earthquake- both runways there are out of commission for at least another week.” She pauses for a second, looking down at some notes. “And the Soviet specifically requested USN escorts.”

“Sounds kinda like a setup” You say, taking the stack of notes and leafing through them. “Try and draw us in and whack us?”

The admiral shakes his head. “She'd have no way of knowing if we were even going to help her, let alone what kind of help we'd be giving her.” He shakes his head again. “No, son, this one is genuine.”

“So what's the plan?” You say for something like the fifth time tonight.
“We're flying, nonstop, to...” Ice is drowned out by the roar of jets and the scream of tires hitting pavement. Merlins folks look at each other, then both head over to the hangar doors and look for the arriving aircraft.

“Nonstop to a patrol anchor 250 miles east of Vladivostok. We'll be refueled en-route by USAF DC-10s, there's two tanker stops.”

AIM-54 is a big heavy bastard of a dual-mode (it's semi-active for most of it's flight until it goes terminal, iirc) radar-guided missile designed for taking down bombers from 100+ miles away. It's not very maneuverable though, and it probably won't work very well against small agile targets like fighters or witches.

The AIM-9 sidewinder is a close-range heater.

The AIM-120 AMRAAM is a medium range (30-50 miles) radar-guided missile with an active seeker head, and is very good at just about everything.

for our purposes, the AIM-54 Phoenix is a long range missile, designed mostly to intercept and kill big shit from far away. real world, it was never really successful, and the F14 was the only bird to carry it.

the AIM-120 AMRAAM is the US's next-generation replacement from the sparrow with a while shitload of improvements. medium-long range, but it's deadly as hell.

the AIM-9 is a short range, heat seeking missile. the model you have isn't the best shortrange missile in the world, but it's effective and has gone through upgrades since it's inception.

Gone are the 400 fucking dials and knobs and switches- they've been replaced by several flat multifunction displays. Your stick has been moved to the right, your throttles are still on the left- and your HUD is about half again a big as your old one.

Merlin's dad climbs up and rests on the ladder next to you. “We basically copied the YF-22's cockpit for this” he says. “The MFDs up here can display whatever you need them to, and your RIO can send you display data on this smaller one here” he points to where the stick used to be.” He grins. “We also improved the datalink system and a whole bunch of things that Merlin is probably trying to decide if she loves more than that cake”

“I don't know, sir, it's really good cake” you say.

He laughs. “Of course. She's got a new radar, top of the line stuff. Phased-array doppler, with a dedicated computer to it. New electronic defensive suite, new chaff/flare launchers, and better radios, while we were at it.”

“I can't help but notice you improved forward visibility, too” you say, somewhat dryly.

“Of course. The canopy is a new kind of synthetic, now. We also improved on the ejection sequence.”

“Awesome”

“Son, I hate to cut you short, but we need to go. Our girl's going to launch in 18 hours.” Nixon says. “and our first fuel point is just south of Elmendorf.”

“Elmendorf, sir?”

“Air force base. In Alaska. They're going to have 15s up.”

Nixon laughs, and looks over at Ice, who's mounting her striker stand.

“Time to go, son” He says, looking back up at you. “Let's not mess this up”
