Last time we accepted a drow death king into our government, the shade legion is now governed by both the triumvirate of shadows and Elomir the death king. For the first time in many cycles the drow flourished in peace, no fighting or suffering need be had, for all of them were safe and happy. We created fine clothing from the soft and tough material that silt-spiders create. We headed back to previous battlefields and summoned an army of undead warriors, Elomir is looking a little jumpy...

Copper isn't all that strong, but it's much more useful than the primitive bone tools the drow were using. They forge copper tools, however they can't seem to forge them perfectly, they come out quite crude. One of the smiths is starting to research what he calls "casting" and says he should be done at the end of october. On the bright side copper is now used to create containers, the shade legion becomes a little more civilized. The population is beginning to desire a building of worship so that they may praise the higher powers for good fortune.

The hard rocky floor is mined for rock, the copper tools tend to break quickly when mining the hard rock, but they do the job. Without any kind of mortar the drow learn of simple cyclopean techniques, they replace the wooden wall with a stone wall, however without any mortar the wall isn't as sturdy as desired. Wood is used to support the wall. A small shrine is built out of black wood, although it hasn't been dedicated to any singular god. Elomir (the death king) is dedicated to Xalothas, however the drow themselves owe nothing to that god, Uxukahn was discovered after a large battle where Elomir summoned him to fight against us. Some strange energies are eminating from the shrine...

The krelk are kept in pens periodically to breed, this encourages them more than usual, hopefully in time it will increase the krelk growth rate.

Pyromancers find that in order to manipulate fire more effectively they must be subjugated to it. Pyromancers give themselves burn marks regulary, it helps them bend the flame much easier. How many burn marks a pyromancer has shows how powerful he is. Our pyromancers can now bend fire to their will much better.

The smith from earlier has presented a prototype of what he calls a "cast". It's essentially a thick stone tablet with the shape of a tool or weapon carved into it. He says he painstakingly carved it with chisels, the process takes weeks to do correctly, but in the end the cast creates fine tools and weapons, soon the weapons and tools are replaced.

Four gods have made themselves known among the drow, presenting their avatars as proof of divinity.
>>
>>20922437

Please Lolth. Drider abominations spinning webs to catch ape bats sounds slick as shit.
>>
The first was Molath, god of carnage, his avatar was a large 8ft human man with black skin covered in repulsive scars and wounds. Molath told the drow that he would lead them into battle and assure victory, if only they would exclusively worship him and sacrafice their young to him.

The second was Rayon, god of suffering, his avatar was a horde of sickly rats that combined to take the shape of a large drow. Rayon told the drow that he would bring eternal pain to their enemies, and make the shade legion immune to pain itself, and all that he would ask is that he be worshipped exclusively and given tribute in the form of precious items.

The third was Hecoutal, god of the hunt, his avatar was a large humanoid wolf with red tinted fur. Hecoutal told the drow that he would ensure that all future hunts were successful, and food was always plentiful. He didn't ask to be worshipped exclusively, but did ask for tribute in the form of celebration, for ten days on September 10th all hunter must leave their bows and knives and drink to worship Hecoutal.

The fourth was Vennath, god of battle, his avatar was a hefty drow warrior clad in shining gold armor. Vennath told the drow that he would make their warriors fight with divine power. He didn't ask to be worshipped exclusively, but did ask for tribute in the form of arena battles daily, to the death.

Which god(s) did the drow choose to worship?

We shall worship Hecoutal. Given Vennath's mode of worship, we simply don't have a large enough population to sustain his desire for blood. Now, if it were only to the death sometimes or on holy days, that'd be much more appetizing, in which case I'd vote for us to worship both Hecoutal and Vennath in addition to Xalothas and Uxukahn.

I've an idea everyone. Remember that spirit... thing that killed 13 of our mages in exchange for creating the Death King? Well, how about this - our evokers study spirits, and mainly, how to subjugate/destroy them. Once they learn how, we can perform the ritual to create another Death King, but this time, be prepared for the spirit so we can enslave it to our will. The drow don't make deals, not with spirits, not with anyone.

I'm new to all this, but I'm going to put in a vote for getting in touch with Uxokahn and Xalathos, and if neither of them care about being worshipped exclusively, if they don't go for Hecoutal. A nice biproduct of this is that we might find a drow Conan, who survives time and time again.

The drow begin to worship Hecoutl the god of the hunt, they instantly find that their hunts become successfuly and their food stocks grow to great heights, their food stocks are now completely full! Great feasts are had in the homes of the drow, the shade legion will eat hearty every night from now on! The other gods seem disappointed, but show no concern, their pressence simply fading from the shrine. As a result of worshipping Hecoutl some of the hunters have become almost supernaturally efficient at hunting. When asked about Xalothas and Uxukahn Elomir seems pleased that the shade legion wants to know, he tells them that Xalothas is the god of the void. He talks of a strange dimensions in which nothing exists, a black expanse that stretches on to infinity, that is where Xalothas resides. He talks of Xalothas as being a strange god, one that has been forgotten by all other gods. Xalothas has no real divine power, he has no avatar. Why or how he was given his divine blessing and the mark, he does not know. Elomir says that Xalothas see's great potential in the drow, but because they killed his prophet he was forced to take action and seperate his believers from the ignorant shade legion. Finally after Elomir was convinced of Xalothas' power the shade legion attacked the believers, killing all but Elomir. The ignorant death lord Abolaxul dualed Elomir and the avatar of Uxukahn, Abolaxul lost, but before he died he summoned a runic sword of soul eating and destroyed both his own soul and Elomir's. Elomir is now a death king, a husk, his personality, memories, and power preserved by Xalothas' dark powers, naturally afterwards he returned to the crypt and became the partial king of the drow and undead. Elomir also tells the drow that Uxukahn is a feeble god, he serves Xalothas for unknown reasons.
>>
When the drow pray to Xalothas and Uxukahn nothing happens. However after a few days Elomir tells the shade legion that he has heard mumblings from Xalothas.
In order for the shade legion to worship Xalothas they must focus all of their efforts on improving their weapons and magic, and finally march up to the surface world. Apparently Xalothas used the last of his divine power keeping Elomir alive and powerful, but Uxukahn can provide stronger skeletons and better necromancy if the drow follow Xalothas' orders. It is apparent Xalothas doesn't care for worship, he simply needs the shade legion to fulfill his agenda. They don't seem to care if they're worshipped exclusively, as long as they are given respect and regular prayers.

[C]
The necromancers begin to experiment with non-conventional necromancy. They know that trees are alive, plants *are* alive. So why can't they turn them undead? They begin to experiment, they soon find that yes indead they can turn the dead trees undead, however they aren't of much use. They're about as hard as you'd think, a tree. They don't exactly move or anything, and most of the dead trees that are found are fallen over or logs. In time they do take root once again and begin to grow, but it takes far too long for it to be very efficient.
>>
>>20923114
JUST AS PLANNED.
Now I'd like to improve the settlement a bit more before going on a warpath for Xalothas.
>>
All in all it's pretty useless...However one of the evocators hatches a brilliant idea. The tree's alone are inanimate, but perhaps if they were posessed they might be able to move. Afterall, before the souls of our fallen warriors posessed our skeletons they moved quite clumsily, why can't they posess tree's aswell? The evactor determines that since there hasn't been any recent deaths he will have to summon the soul of a creature to posess the trees. He summons one such soul, the soul of a dead krelk puppy, the tree is posessed by the soul..The tree shifts and twists, soon a wicked face appears from it's middle, inside the hollow tree a red evil fire burns, the tree is friendly to the drow, but attacks any enemies it sees.
>>
>>20923114
THIS WAS NOT THE GLORY WE ANTICIPATED.

Personally I feel we need better tech down here. Better tech will help improvement in pretty mcuh every area but magic; we need better tools and such to be able to improve our settlement, make better weapons, etc.

Also we need greater rates of increase in our population. Reward drow who have over six children with retirement, or similar.
>>
It can't move around, but it can grow long vines and bend around dramatically to slam and hit it's enemies. The forst is huge and hasn't been explored yet, but undead posessed trees are now present in the local area, both the forest and the plains/farmland surrounding the village. Oddly enough the drow even begin to harvest and carve the undead trees into wooden undead posessed panels, placing them on the outside of houses and the wall. The crypt is now literally a LIVING village, the outer panels grow black vines that lash out at enemies and help out drow workers, the outer walls are now deadly, if any enemies try to approach they will be strangled and beaten to death by the vines. This marks a new chapter in drow magic, one that will define the culture of the shade legion for years to come.

How about some E - some culture? Beware - subpar writefaggotry lies ahead.

( before the big battle ) A drow hunter, while out looking for food, finds a few interesting berries and flowers. After accidentally smashing some underfoot, he notices the beautiful colors of the juices. He loves them, but doesn't know what to do with them, so he just takes some back to his hut.

( after the big battle ) Plagued by the nightmares of that bloodbath, of the horrible memories of drow fighting drow, the hunter is struck with insomnia for days. Addled by a lack of sleep and a generous amount of questionable drink swilled down in an attempt to calm his violent memories, the hunter goes out for a walk through the forest, to possibly find some poisonous fruit to calm his living nightmares forever. By chance, he finds the same grove of berries and flowers as before, and sits among them, wondering at their vibrant colors until he falls asleep.

After awakening in the grove again, the hunter decides to put down his spear and pick up a new hobby. The flowers and berries, while dark and withered on the outside, hold beautiful colors on the inside. Perhaps this is true for all things - after all, underneath the dark hides of the drow lies bright, beautiful blood - something the hunter knows all too well. Maybe his dark, saddening memories, like the berries and flowers, hold a vibrant truth that is yet to be unlocked.

Upon returning to his hut, the hunter stays inside for many days, working on a secret project. Many are concerned for his life, but none dares disturb him. One day, the hunter opens up his door and walks out carrying the tanned skin of a krelk covered with the juices and pigments of the berries and flowers, glowing with an, although primitive, beautiful account of the battle at the temple. He is a new drow - a warrior become an artist.

UNDERWORLD

Krelks: Small hyena-like creatures with no fur and hard black skin. They spit out a glowing white liquid that acts as an acid.

Lunzes: Large bat/ape creatures that are ambush predators.

Wuks: Resemble woodpeckers, they are much smaller and completely black save for a few red dots on their head. The creatures seem to pierce the black trees and suck out what seems to be dark sap. They are utterly docile.

Sligs: Giant black slugs that secrete an acid that eats through black trees, they eat the trees.

Silt-spiders: About as big as a shoe. Red spiders that live in and feed off of glow moss, naturally because of this they glow slightly, they secrete an extremely strong tan string instead of silk. The string they produce is called "Spirit-silt."

Arntoks: Large two-headed dog-like creatures with, they are furless and gray skinned.

Without any good way to record data gemoetry is lost on the drow, however they do manage to learn some basic math and draw up a map of their surroundings by recording the data with krelk pelts and blood for ink, it's primitive but it works. Simple equasions like addition and subtraction are mastered, and even some multiplication and division is learned.

Art was already a well known activity in Crypt, infact the inner wall of the city was lined with art, the canvas being krelk hide and the paint being blood. But when the drow artist came from his home and presented the tribe with this beautiful master piece, the definition of art would forever change. The drow were amazed at the beauty of the picture, indeed it was rudimentary compared to modern standards, but for one of the shade legion it was divinity itself. The artists name was Yinneth, he was now respected among the drow community, many sought to become his apprentice, only two were chosen. The strange berries seem to be unedible, they cause vomitting on consumption, the flowers also smell putrid and can't be eaten.

However they both, when grounded up and smashed, create beautiful arrays of colors, each berry seems to hold an entirely new shade of color, sadly it seems that there is only one small grove in the surrounding area, and when an attempt to transplant them is made they simply die off within a matter of hours. It would seem these berries are quite rare aswell. They are treasured and used to create wonderful pieces of art, despite them being primitive they inspire awe to all that see them. They are named Yinneth berries, named after the man that discovered them...

An attempt to domesticate the slig is made, but in the end doesn't work exactly as planned. The slig can be lead into pens by creating a trail of branches, but afterwards they just tend to wander around. They don't really show any loyalty to their keepers and feeders, they just wander around trying to find something to eat, they are however completely docile to their keepers, even so much so that they let drow children ride them as they wander around.

Pyromancers delve deeper into the mystical ways of flame manipulation, they progress enough to progress their understanding of fire bending to an advanced level. Pyromancers can now summon fire from other planes instead of using local flame.

The drow learn how to stretch out skins and tan them, refine them into parchment. They then experiment with different materials, eventually creating a brush in the form of a stick with spirit-silt attached. The spirit-silt is firm enough to be used to write and draw with, the drow start recording information and drawing refined pictures. Elomir tells the triumvirate of shadows that Xalothas grows impatient, and that they should start focusing their efforts on war. He reminds them that the dull gray metal needs to be melted, that previously they couldn't because the forge couldn't reach a high enough degree of heat.

Using pyromancy to melt the dull gray metal is a perfect idea, (despite already having coal to use), the metal is revealed to be iron. Iron weapons and tools are made with the pyromancy fire, the readily available flame is perfect for smithing and soon all of the smiths have dedicated themselves to learning it, as a result all shade legion smiths have dozens of burn scars.

[A1]
A group of skilled scouts are sent north to find the deserter, after many days they find him. Apparently the deserter wants to live as a free man and escape to the surface where adventure and wonderous sights await him, he tells the scouts that he no longer wishes to live in a comfortable village for the rest of his life, he wants to battle monsters, loot dungeons, and become a powerful warrior. He pleads for the scouts to let him go.

He's given some provisions, an iron sword and an iron spear, a bow and some arrows, and a krelk companion. He thanks the scouts and vows to return one day and show his gratitude. The journey to the mushroom men will be long and hard, it will take a considerable sized and well stocked group to make their way back there.

[C]
The drow find that they can't necromantically fortify the undead trees, however they find that if they expose the trees to dead and rotten wood the trees will absorb the dead matter and grow more appendages, among these are arms and legs. Soon it's apparent that arbor necromancy deserves it's own school of magic, only those who dedicate themselves to arbor necromancy can master it. Undead trees can now use arms and legs to move around and help in construction and battle.

Some of the more creative drow gather glow moss and put it in bags, they tie these bags onto thick strands of spirit-silt. The glow moss shines through clearly and can infact spin, they name these devices Dis'coes.

A party of about thirty drow are supplied and sent to check on the mushroom men, it takes them many cycles but they eventually make it there. They bring their dis'coe balls. The mushroom men seem to be even friendlier than before, all of them gathering at the edge of the poison moss, dancing and making a groovy song out of their chorus of bellows. The drow and the mushroom men boogey down and become close friends, so much so that the mushroom men seem to show them how to safely tread on the poison moss. They can't communicate with them verbally but they show the drow that they tend the mushroom fields and achieve inner peace and happiness by dancing and singing, that is all they require, it is all they want, and by singing and dancing with them they proved themselves to be friends. To cross the poison moss one must eat a highly watered-down shred of the moss, apparently it acts as like a medication, it makes the drow immune to the poison that the moss secretes.
>>
Soon the drow are wanderin the mushroom fields, the poison moss remaining docile. Deep in the mushroom fields is a large town carved into the mushrooms, the mushroom men seem to feed off of the light that the poison moss gives. The drow and the mushroom men learn much about each other, most of they become close friends. The drow return, strangely they seem to be perfectly at peace.

Using both unholy magic and the strength of the smiths arbor armor is made, the armor is difficult to make. Using necromantic powers the wood is made flexible, though it is only about as strong as a normal tree. The armor is seperated into flexible panels that cover the users body, the head gear covers all but the warriors eyes. The armor is literally posessed with the soul of a dead animal, thus it thinks and operates on it's own unless commanded by a necromancer, because warriors are often not experienced necromancers they cannot control what the armor does. The armor itself can grow dark vines that attack enemies by tying them, lashing out at them, and strangling them. It may be lucrative to create spirit-silt armor, as it is the strongest material the drow have.

Can the undead trees communicate with us at all? Or with each other, through their roots or something? It might be possible to make our watchtowers undead, meaning we'd have more drow available for anything we need them for. If our watchtowers saw anything they could let us know.
So I'm saying A/C.
>>
>>20927430
They are posessed by the souls of dead animals, so they are pretty primitive, can't communicate, only be ordered. All of our undead drow are posessed by the souls of our fallen warriors, so they are intelligent. Once some of our drow die we'll have souls to put in the trees.

[C]
The trees are indeed large, but not any larger than other trees, so building rooms in them is virtually impossible. The arbor necromancers attempt to make the undead trees larger by feedin them dead matter, they find that the dead matter can only be used to add things onto the tree, they can't seem to make it very much larger just by feeding it. One necromancer has a breakthrough and discovers he can make the trees larger by showering them with dark energy, of course, it's so simple. A normal tree requires the waters of life, an undead tree requires the energies of death. Although there seems to be a maximum heigh a tree can grow. Small rooms are made inside the fully grown trees, and it functions relatively well.

It would seem our source of dead trees has ran out, we have uncovered all of the local fallen down trees, we can only create more now by chopping down trees, in other words, deforestation. Do we deforest the land for the sake of undead glory?

One of the more interesting things they find is a ruined temple, when the scout explores the insides he finds strange markings on the walls and depictions of some sort of eyeless humanoid with pasty white skin robed in a grey cloak. Just include it them next time. And Send those willing (preferably at least 50 and no more than 100) to start a new settlement. Would the old temple of the followers of our death king be usable?

So that would be A1 and A.

We should settle at the ruined temple as >>20927978 said, and be a bit closer to our mushroom brothers.
>>
i am torn between using the Ruined temple and establishing a town near the mushroom men trade and diplomatic purposes.
>>
>>20928032

Thank you. A1 and A for me. Let's start the religious capital at our old temple. It's on a nice hill and everything. Also I'd like to swap a drow into a tree for scouting. They can see things in the forest that we might never notice.

Also archive please, if not already done.
>>
i vote ruined temple. That way we can slowly head towards our mushroom bros.
>>
>>20928081

We can do that later. Let's keep reinforcements close by for now.
>>
>>20927925
A1 ruined temple
A lets fix up the new home include poison moss defenses. For main town work on turning the fully grown undead trees into towers. Basically build upwards lets take advantage of that height and create potentially mobile towers.
>>
gonna get off for the night, good luck drow
>>
>>20928084
I'll archive it later.
>>
so ruined temple it is?
>>
>>20927925
C1 Chop down thirty of the largest trees and then Sacrifice thirty of our Drows, 20 warriors and 10 scouts to try and necro their souls in to the trees.

Otherwise Generic A to improve settlement so the rest of the people are happy with the city for now.
>>
[A]
The tops of undead trees begin to change into towers, they extend for usually about five to ten feet upwards, this allows for even greater vision among the fields, however the underground world is dark, the dark elves dark sight only extends for so long before becoming dim. Each undead tree is now a sort of mobile tower/fortress that can be defended well against enemies.

[A1]
120 Drow are sent to settle at the old ruined temple of Xalothas, this was where the traitor drow and Elomir mad their stand against Abolaxul and his forces. The temple is in decent condition.

What should the settlement be named?

[A]
The drow begin scheming, they believe that the hill itself is big enough to house all of them if they were to build their houses into the hill itself, it would make the town much more defendable. With the help of drow workers from the crypt [E] they manage to create a stone cyclopean wall with wooden supports at the foot of the hill, they also create a wooden gate. Since they were aided by Crypt they also were able to build wooden houses into the hill, eventually even creating a network system of underground houses into the mountain. The town doesn't appear to be much on the outside, but on the inside it's bustling with activity.

A. Spend just one more turn to get properly situated and established and everything. Never hurts to go the extra mile when you're just starting out. Afterwards they can start down other paths.

D. I remember you saying we didn't have mortar for our walls awhile back. Would be useful to work on that now.

Also, we should probably have a road of some kind, secret or open, connecting our two settlements.
>>
>>20928669
Shouldn't leave it up to me on how to find mortar, specify how you want to create the mortar, it isn't like we have anything readily available that could be made into mortar..
>>
Rolled 304, 474, 112 = 890

>>20928669
A and D, and I agree. I road or passage would make sense. What are the prospects of creating some sort of magical transportation system similar to the stargates?
>>
>>20928734
Hmm, could we experiment with the sligs then? Even if we fail to create a mortar substitute mixure, we might find some other use for them.

In either case, we should definitely work on a road of some kind.

D: make mortar

don't all you need is stone/dirt and water to make mortar? we found a stream, so lets get busy making some mud pies.
>>
>>20928799
Ah okay (I'm new to this thread, sorry)

What are our options/prospects for making or discovering clay of any description?

Actually, so not to hold us up:
1. Build a road/passage/route
2. Experiment/explore mines/natural resources and local area for any malleable materials. We've got pyromancy, so anything we can shape, we can then harden pretty successfully.
>>
>Axulfel
[A]
The temple is improved and repaired, it's broken and chipped stones replaced and it's walls decorated with art. Stairs are also built to access the different levels of the hill.

[D]
The drow wish to find an easier way to build with stone, perhaps by creating some sort of susbtance that sticks stones together. They experiment with slig acid, but it's gel-like mixture isn't sticky in the slightest. They then experiment with glow moss, they find that if it's grounded up and mixed with a little water it creates a thick paste that when dries loses it's glow but bonds materials together.

End of the thread guys.
Due to me being quite busy there won't be a thread thomorrow. The next thread will be on next saturday at 17:00 4chan standard time (or 2:00PM PST.)
