Let's play a game.

Dwarf: Forced to start in a mountainous region. Starts with iron tools tech, iron metallurgy tech, smithing tech, and brewing tech. Major penalty to magic, penalty to population.

Elves: Starts with mastery of one school of magic, starts with wooden bows, bonus to magic. Major penalty to population.

Lizardmen: Start with wood working tech, starts with wooden spears, bonus to population, bonus to weapon&armor. Cannot use magic, penalty to tech.

Humans: No bonuses or penalties.

Goblins: Major bonus to population, bonus to weapons&armor, starts with wooden spears and wooden bows. Cannot research tech, cannot use magic, carnivorous. Goblins gain technology by stealing enemies tech, smart goblins back engineer the tech so they can reproduce it.

Orcs: Bonus to population, bonus to weapons&armor. Penalty to tech, major penalty to magic, carnivorous.

Gnome: Why would you pick this? Penalty to population, penalty to weapons&armor. Major bonus to tech, bonus to magic.

Your Choice: Suggest an original race, the GM will state the penalties/bonuses for that race.

(Keep in mind you can change the affects of the races by adding a locational prefix, I.E Forest Goblins, Mountain Elves.)

Goblins are shafted really fucking hard in terms of what kind of penalties they get. So are orcs. They are set up so that there is only one way to really play them, and it gimps all but a few possible types of civilizations.

I'll second this. An underground Civilization game would be pretty darn cool. I remember really liking a game where we played as Desert elves.

So, drow?

Drow
Starts with half mastery of one school of dark magic, starts with unified military, bonus to magic. Major penalty to population, ALWAYS evil (NE, LE, CE), penalty to diplomacy.

DARK MAGICKS TO CHOOSE FROM
Necromancy (undead), evocation (summoning demons, imps, and other evil beings), dark illusion (causing pain to others, massive nightmarish illusions.)

Drow are a much more militaristic race than their forest dwelling cousins, they are most of all evil, wishing harm to others more than anything else. Their natural form of government is a dictatorship, but can be changed if you can tame the masses.

Merfolk
Starts with glorious bone tridents, starts with mastery of fishing, average population rate, bonus to armaments, bonus to water magic. Major penalty to all non-water magic, major penalty to tech, penalty to diplomacy.

Merfolk are creatures that have evolved from the very depths of the darkest oceans of the world, generally they live in the wide oceans, thus being isolated from land dwellers. Those that do settle near the shores are often misunderstood as monsters and hunted down, thus they aren't very good negotiaters. They start off in a feudalistic state, as they have noone to war with but themselves. They make their weapons, armor, and structures out of bones and coral, they are naturally masters at fishing the creatures of the sea. They are generally neutral and only wish to be left alone, although some merfolk have extraordinary desires to venture onto land, which they can only do for a few hours before they dry up and die. They CAN breathe air, but eventually it WILL kill them. Thus merfolk that decide to settle near or on land must live in lakes or rivers.
>>
>>20827494
Dark Illusion, I think. Evocation is begging to get stabbed in the back by demons, and necromancy, while tempting, isn't nearly mind-fucky enough. No, Dark Illusion is the way to go. Failing that, Necromancy.
>>

>>20827543
Antmen (For sake of posterity.)
Major bonus to population, hivemind, bonus to earth magic. Penalty to non-earth magic, major penalty to tech, penalty to diplomacy.

Antmen often live in large mountains or hills where they can dig huge tunnel networks underneath the soil, they don't exactly have any motives other than to survive, often times they are true neutral, though other species that see them often freak the fuck out and try to kill them, they are experienced in earth magic, though they don't exactly recognize it as magic. Antmen are deeply connected to the world itself, they believe the world let's them manipulate their environment because of this. Antmen never fight amongst each other, only fighting other ant clans, but most often these are never close to each other as antmen are extremely rare.

So i'm kinda' stumped on how i'm going to do breeding.
Up until now all of the games have been with races that have breeding seasons / peculiar reproduction cycles.

So i'm thinking something like the total population divided by 8 (I have all of the values listed for each bonus/penalty) every turn, since maybe every ten days a set of children are becoming adults, but that would also mean that the actual population is much bigger than the total number.

So if we had something like 100 Population, divided by 8 that's 12, so we're getting 12 more drow a turn, but if he assume that the 100 population is just the adults, then we actually have something like 1.5x the total population. So we actually have a population of 150. But those fifty children aren't really of importance, they can't fight, they can't really work either. So should I add in the children or just leave it as it is?
>>
>>20827972
Lawful Evil (Pragmatic) is probably the closest we're gonna get. But, yes, I'm sticking to my vote of Necromantic Dictatorial Drow.

And, y'know what? We're not gonna be a theocracy. Magocracy, maybe, or possibly an Oligarchy, but never a theocracy. Lolth can go stuff it.
>>
>>20827935
Personally antmen are too obscure for my taste, I mean I JUST got done with machine men. Stuck between Drow and Merfolk, I think drow would be much more interesting though because they'll have a lot more racial interactions. Nobody gives humans any love though ;_;
>>
>>20827992
Keep track of the children, I should think, unless you want to abstract it more completely.
>>
rolled 75 = 75

Can we just have people use trips for voting?
>>
>>20827992
If the 50 children can't contribute to the settlement at all, or if their contribution is negligible, we can ignore them, however it might be a good idea to only ignore them for the purposes of breeding (they can still do a lot of jobs).
>>
>>20827992

Every turn, increase the population by a 1d6% or something. That way you can still apply bonuses if you'd like but you don't have to keep track of the (varied age) of the kids.

Drow aren't exactly faster breeders as far as I know, so it should work out.
>>
>>20828010
That's because we're humans and humans don't get anything interesting at all. They don't even get flexibility. They're just kinda there. If they had some distinct set of bonuses and penalties they'd be a lot more appealing, instead of being the "baseline race". I don't think that a "baseline race" is even necessary, really.
>>
rolled 31 = 31

I still think merfolk would be awesome.
>>
>>20828018
Nah, an honor system is good enough for me. I know that I'm not voting more than I should, and I trust everyone else to do the same. I mean, it's not like your turn won't come up in some other game along the road, so there's no real incentive to cheat. Besides, this is a traditional gaming board. There are few things we hate more than cheaters.

That could work. Perhaps something like:

Slight penalty to population
Slight penalty to magic
Bonus to Diplomacy
Starts with no technologies, but can get technologies for free from extended exposure to other civilizations

I dunno. Something along those lines. Just something to distinguish them from the pack, and give them things they're distinctly good and bad at.

Drow, a race of elves that had long been exiled to the dark underworlds of the earth, for many centuries this tribe has lived together, suffered together, and fought together. Their hatred had infested them, they became a race of ill intentioned elves, nay, you could barely call them elves anymore. They were primitive as of yet, they lived in a colossal cave network, where the ceiling couldn't be seen, let alone reached, and the walls expanded for miles. Here in this dreadful environment they bided their time, now they have nurtured themselves, their numbers are strong and they have finally gathered under one clan, one leader, one will. They will come up from the underworld and reign terror on the surface dwellers that put them in this hell! THERE WILL BE RETRIBUTION!

As of yet the drow have been using their decent night vision to navigate this landscape, they simply sleep in patches of soil and cover themselves with animal skins. Their leaders name is Abolaxul, rumoured to be the greatest warrior among them. They have just formed and they require a suitable clan name and a name for their soon to be built settlement.

IT IS DONE.
The shade legion now resides in the endless underground expanses, though primitive, their will power is unbreakable, and their magic fearsome!

First things first, so far they've been hunting small cave lizards and delicious giant bats, using their skeletal servants to do all the work for them, but as their numbers grew they realized they required much more food to sustain themselves, right now they're fine, but in the future they should try to find some bigger prey.

One of the children has been born with a strange black mark on it's forehead, the mother swears that the infant was not touched after birth, that it was naturally on him. The wise men are unsure what to do with the baby, whether is is an ill omen or a blessing from the gods has yet to be decided...

Small shacks are made, support beams are made out of carved bone and animal skins are used for the roof/walls. What is created is a sturdy hide tent/shacks that keep the drow warm enough to last the cold nights.

[E1]
Once the child has come of reasonable age he will be taught the arts of magic and become the head of the necromancers.

Some strange glowing moss has been found on the outskirts of town, the moss stinks quite horribly and nobody has had the guts to eat some or study it. But some is taken and used to light up the town, light makes it easier for the drow to see despite their dark vision. One of the younger drow report that he saw some giant flying creatures in the dark sky above, he says he ran away and that as soon as he joined up with the other drow the creatures disbanded. He says they're about as large as a boulder (An SUV.)

The drow start practicing magic, becoming in tune with the dark energies of their spirits. They harness it, cordinate it, focus it, they advance their mastery of necromancy. Now they can reanimate medium sized beasts.

[E]
A party of ten drow are sent to find the flying beasts, they search for days but in the end they can't find any. One of the wise me studies the report and comes to a conclusion that they must be attracted to lone prey.

Some strange hyena-like creatures with no fur and hard black skin are harassing our hunters, they spit a strange white glowing liquid that eats through our warriors' skin. Luckily it's not very potent, and can be cured by simply wiping it off, but no doubt they will claim more lives if they are not dealt with. The drow have named them Krelks. The wise men believe the creatures must be migrating, as they donot seem native to this particular region.

We send out numerous hunting parties to kill the Krelk's, they kill many of the beasts, but unfortuneately the beasts claim five lives, we use their hides and create clothes for our citizens and warriors, the krelk clothes is sturdy and works as well as leather armor. Their meat also sustains us. The drow also capture sixty pups and restrain them, feeding them, trying to tame them. They're quite cute, but they keep trying to spit acid at their tamers, making them difficult to deal with.

[D]
The strange glowing white liquid seems to be unable to penetrate the krelk hide, so the drow harvest it and place it in small krelk hide sacks. The sacks are then tied to bone poles and placed around town, the drow now have something akin to torches around the town.

[E]
It is impossible to lay ambushes for the flying beasts, they never show themselves unless there is just one drow around, they must have some very good vision because they can always see right through our ambushes. They are also too high in the air for the drow to catch them.

>It is impossible to lay ambushes for the flying beasts, they never show themselves unless there is just one drow around, they must have some very good vision because they can always see right through our ambushes. They are also too high in the air for the drow to catch them.

We get cunning since we have necromancy. The ambush can be using either incorporeal or invisible undead or just a "corpse" that the "lone drow" is retrieving.

The drow sharpen bones into swords and spears, they work surprisingly well in hunting the krelk.

[E]
The drow, lacking any humanoid undead, have one of the skeletal krelks act as bait. It works to a certain degree, but before the drow could attack the giant creature it already flew off with the krelk. The creature was nightmarish, like a giant ape and a bat had babies.

The baby is acting normal for now, although some of the necromancers report that dark energy flows within him fluently, they say that if he is raised well he should be a perfect conduit of dark magic.

A small exploratory party reports that to the north there is a strange forest of black trees bearing black fruits, they ate one and tell Abolaxul that it tastes good and gave them energy, but the journey will take days to make, and is interuppted by patches of poisonous fungus and stalking predators.

Abolaxul decides that the drow would stay in their current location, at least until the food and resources run dry.

[C]
Necromancy is simply the act of raising the dead and harnessing their power, thus the drow have no idea how to use magic for offensive, defensive, or supportive purposes. They attempt to learn another school of magic. They begin to dabble in dark illusions, but haven't been able to make a significant breakthrough as of yet.

[E]
A skeletal krelk is filled with the white acid and sent out as bait once again. Once more it is eaten up by one of the apebats (now called Lunzes.) The acid is not powerful enough to eat through the stomach right away however, and it escapes with one more of our krelks.

An exploratory group returns from the south to report a huge green glowing moss field with hundreds of giant mushrooms growing within. He also reports that he saw giant mushrooms with legs dancing around strange green fires.

The drow experiment with dark illusions, eventually they create a new spell and harness it's power. Each dark illusion mage can now create one small illusion, the illusions as of yet have to be small, and (because they are DARK ILLUSIONS) must be negative in some way, like a severed head, a nightmarish cat, small things.

[A1]
A party of fifteen warriors, along with a diplomat is sent over to the moss fields, they try to step into the field itself, but they find that the moss rejects foreign objects. It secretes a potent gas that makes the drow cough violently and cry. They are forced to camp outside the field. They observe the dancing mushroom men, and after a few days the mushroom men notice them. One of them approached the drow, bouncing up slightly with each step. The strange sentient mushroom makes a few bellow, as if he was speaking. "Oooo, ooo, ooo." Each time making a different pitched sound. The drow wave at the mushroom man and tries to communciate, the mushroom man just stares curiously back at them and makes more sounds. After a few minutes of akwardness the mushroom man seems to get an idea in his head, he begins dancing. The diplomat, thinking on his feet realizes this must be something like a peace offering, and orders the men to dance like the mushroom man. It was humiliating to say the least, the mushroom mans silly and bouncy dance looked much more ridiculous when the drow were performing it. But after a few minutes of dancing the mushroom man stops and makes some cheerful bellows.
>>
Soon dozens of the mushroom men come out from the foliage of the giant mushroom forest and makes sounds at the drow. After a few minutes they return to the deeper parts of the mushroom forest, waving goodbye to the drow. The diplomat was a bit shaken, wondering what would've happened if they hadn't danced with them. Still though, they seemed friendly enough, if not too friendly. Down here in the cold and unforgiving underworld, kindness wasn't what kept you alive.

Some bones are used to create tools, so far the drow have created shovels and pickaxes, which they can use to dig into the rock and soil. The drow create a small mine in the ground, some of the drow wish to live in these mines, they believe it's much safer than on the cave floor.

For some reason the marked child (who has been named Elomir) is growing faster than any other child. He's already about the size and maturity of an eight-year-old. His training as a necromancer has started, and within a few days he has already mastered all we know and beyond, though he seems to be unable to teach the other mages his powers.

The drow heard a great bellow from the black skies above, the beating of wings and huge gusts of wind. The wise men predict that something colossal must be soaring high, high in the sky.

The Krelk have left the region, our food source has run dry, it's time to either migrate or find another food source.

The mages seem to perform magic better while Elomir is near them, almost as if his power gives him an aura that enhances magic. The mages learn to use dark illusions to create medium sized illusions. This comes in handy when groups of warriors meet a tough foe, they can make it seem as though there are more of them than there actually is and scare the enemy.

The drow pick up everything they have and start moving towards the northern forest, they manage to avoid both the stalking predators and the poison moss, the moss is easy enough to avoid as long as the group keeps it's distance, and the stalking prey didn't dare to take on such a huge group. Finally they reach the forest and settle, they find that the forest itself is actually quite hospitable, save for the occasional huge brown lizard that ambushes gatherers. The fruits give the drow tons of food, but the lizards claim many lives, so far they've claimed eight. The good news is the corpses were ressurected and given weapons to wield. The skeletons prove to be very efficient at sustaining damage.

Some drow try to create shacks and houses up in the trees, but so far they've been unsuccessful. The drow try to cut down some trees, but they lack the proper tools. They manage to cut down a few nontheless, the first few wooden houses are made, these are much bigger than the shacks and much more comfortable. Some even start to use the black wood to create walls around the city, albeit small walls.

The drow use illusions to draw out the giant brown lizards, slaying them and using their meat and bones for more structures and tools. Nonetheless they claim four more lives, however a group of children have come of age this month and will now start helping in any endeavours.

A new species have begun to terrorize the drow, strange large two-headed wolf-like creatures. They lack hair and their skin is gray, they seem to hunt in packs and often feed off of black tree-dwelling snakes.

No tree necromancy, fuck you.

The drow learn how to create large illusions, about as large as a hamlet. If ten or twelve mages were to get together and combine their dark illusions they could create about a mile of illusionary landscapes, this works well to scare off enemies, but remains useless otherwise.

Three more lives are claimed by the unforgiving wild life. A new species has been found, strange giant slugs that secrete acid onto trees and eat them. As of yet they have not been named. A faint flame could be seen in the far, far east, but just as soon as it appears it is extinguished. The drow have begun to wish to expand their borders, they want to see what this underworld has to offer.

The krelk pups have nearly been completely tamed, but the drow find that they are best tamed if they are paired up with a singular tamer.

Bone axes are made to cut down the black trees, and they work well enough. Soon trees are being harvested and processed into neat blanks via carving. The tents are now replaced with wooden houses, and the new wall is sturdy and big enough to keep out unwanted predators.

Erlokan, an eccentric drow, has been gaining a small following of drow, apparently he has started something like a religion, worshipping the 'Sigil' which was branded on Elomir. Elomir has only been alive a few months, but has matured to nearly 12/13 years old in appearance. Erlokan says that the sigil is a mark from the God of void, Xalothas. The drow tells the towns people that Elomir will lead our people to the surface where we will summon up a great dark cloud that will extinguish all light from the world, and the drow will reign for eternity, but for that to happen they must elect Elomir the marked one as their leader and march to war against all in the underworld, and then the surface.

The drow refine their skinning techniques, they now use uniform hides as insolators and hang them on walls as decorations. Sometimes they even use crushed up glowing moss to draw pictures on the hides. When dried the glowing moss remains glowing, so it makes for a splendid ink.

The krelk have matured and are now tamed, used as domestic pets and war units.

The crazy fool is killed by Abolaxul himself, whether he did it out of fear of being overthrown or for the good of the clan, none could say. Abolaxul approached Erlokan,
"Erlokan, your preaching is unnapreciated and unwanted, cease this or be punished."
"Abolaxul? Why would our great leader be troubled by my preachings? I do not trouble the people, I open their eyes to the truth!"
"You only tell lies, Erlokan, cease, as an order from your superior."
"I HAVE NO SUPERIOR OTHER THAN THE MARKED ONE!"
Erlokan unsheaths a bone sword,
"Punish me at your own peril!"
Abolaxul proceeds to break through Erlokan's defenses and cut in in half, his amazing strength driving his own bone sword straight through the priest. Unbeknowngst to Abolaxul, Erlokan had gained many followers since last reported. Fifty drow forsake their alliegance to Abolaxul and the shadow legion, they plead for Elomir to join them, but despite his great power the boy is still young and innocent.

A stake has been driven between the drow, with Abolaxul dead the drow are in turmoil, fighting for who should become the next leader.

The wise men focus on resurrecting Abolaxul in all of his glory, but they can't seem to resurrect his soul, alas he remains an animate pile of bones. They wonder if there is a way to summon back his soul, they begin researching magical ways of recovering his soul. They begin to dabble in Evocation. They learn how to summon lesser souls, like those of the Krelk and Lunzes.

A crusade of fifty warriors is sent in the general direction the traitor drow fled. They continue for many days, but they cannot find any trace of them. They return empty handed.

Among the masses rises three powerful warriors who have banded together to become the new leader. There names are Ezerath, Melekath, and Belekrag. Together they form the triumvirate of shadows.

I agree with almost all of the rest of the clan. Those who would break away must be returned or crushed, with the boys retrieval given special consideration. I also feel that Slipperyfloorboards has the right of it, and that we should pursue more advanced magic to resurrect our one time leader for this quest. An army of skeletons tireless skeletons out hunting the renegades with Abolaxul at commanding should prove quite efficient, and in addition would give the triumvirate of shadows more time to consolidate their power.

The drow research evocation further, the art of making contracts and deals with hell and dead. Dabbling in such things were undoubtetly dangerous, but the drow were a strong people, their cruelty knew no bounds, they were convinced THEY would be the ones to inspire fear in anything they summoned. They were confident, maybe foolishly so. Soon they could summon medium sized souls, those of humanoids...

An ominous presence could be felt in the cold damp air on the day of the ritual. Abolaxul's bones were gathered and prepared, a giant ritualistic circle was drawn, the ink? Blood from every member of the shadow legion.

"Hear us, king of death, return to us our great leaders essence, we offer you our blood in return." From the center of the boney mass arose a giant skeletal humanoid cloaked in a tattered black cloth, holding a huge scythe.
"You would offer your life blood for the pitiful soul of your leader? Your blood is worthless, mortals."
"Then what would you ask of us, king of death?"
"Life for life, is that not fair?"
"But.."
"You have already summoned me, I shall give you your leader back, but in return..." The cloaked figure laughed, "Everyone here is mine to claim." With one swipe of his scythe all 13 evocators evaporated into a green smoke. The reaper would disappear back into the ground, the boney mass that was once Abolaxul would shift and turn, eventually rearranging back into the form of a drow. A strange blue energy twisted around it, changing it, making it more powerful. Once finished the standing figure in the center of the circle was a giant 7ft skeletal monstrosity, from within it's boney confines a blue fire-like energy eminated.

"I..."

"Am..."
