It's that time of day again, /tg/, it's time for the one and only Civilization Quest. Accept no substitutes! Well, maybe not the one and only, but still, this is my Civilization Quest. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Last time, by the skin of his teeth, Trym managed to secure victory over the hostile tribe of painted-faced marauders and restore the tribe's supply of copper! With peace and prosperity ahead, the tribe looks ready to move on into a new and brighter future!

For this evening, we'll be taking music suggestions from you, the players, as I somehow managed to delete my dang playlist.

Who's ready to play?

Wow, it finally seems like things are looking up. I say we have enough gods for now, lets increate our technology. I say start with water wheels, move to water clocks, and so on towards simplistic clockwork.
>>
>>20825883
Good idea but I'd also consider trying to get horses from that tribe we just defeated as soon as plausible.
>>
>>20825648
Can you post the stats and what happened last turn? Thanks in advance
>>
>>20825903
Think those were cows. At least, that was the general consensus about them.
>>
>>20825903
I thought they had cows, not horses...

Anyway horses is a wonderful idea. I think we should offer them the secret of agriculture in exchange for enough horses to start our own herd and general horse lore.
>>
>>20825883
Whoa, slow down there champ! You've not even got really reliable architecture or bronze yet. Sure you COULD make clockwork with copper and wood, but it'd be a real pain. Just saying, now... On with the show!

The wise ones gather to speak with Trym and before long, they actually have a new idea. They cannot complete it on their own however. They want to ask the other tribe about the strange, thick hides they worse in battle. They were most definitely harder and tougher than buckskins and could prove to be a lot easier and cheaper to work than copper!

At the elders' behest, the warriors gather before the shrine of Groza, eager each to prove their worth to the god of battle. There is a little debate over who should be the priest, but eventually it was decided that Groza would chose his own from only the mightiest of warriors, so a great brawl erupts to chose the priest (or priestess).

Create a name and description for the warrior who is to become Groza's priest. This warrior will serve as a new hero.

Gerain, an outcast of the tribe due to his size. In his young days the other children scorned him for looking like an adult, and soon after reaching adolescence he went to join the hunters, often spending months outside the walls of the city tracking animals. Now he towers over a head above the second tallest in the village.

When the village went to war he was at the forefront in the center of battle. He could feel something behind his fists, giving him strength. Even if the village scorned him they were still his people, he would protect them with his life. If necessary he would give up his life for them, if wasn't as if he had anything else to live for.

And victory goes to... The only guy with a face!

The brawl is brutal and vicious, going on as long as at least two warriors are capable of standing and willing to fight it out. At last however, it became apparent that only one warrior was going to win. With fists swinging with the force of hammer blows, Gerain, tallest and brawniest warrior in the tribe, soon stood triumphant! He raised his mighty fists to the heavens and the onlookers cheered the new priest. Long may he serve the god of battles well!

Gerain spends a full day and a night praying and burning sacrifices to Groza, asking for forgiveness and guidance. On the morning of the second day, he is granted a vision, somewhere between sleep and wakefulness. He shares what he learned with the tribe.

Groza is the spirit of battle, not of war. His is the clash of warrior against warrior, skill at arms and all the skills of a warrior. He objects not to how a battle is waged, be it an ambush, at range, up close, bare-handed or armed, but only that it is a battle between warriors. By sacrificing a defeated warrior, unarmed, weakened, helpless and defeated, the tribe offered an unworthy sacrifice. Lives given to Groza must be given fairly, in battle, not slaughtered like trapped animals. The god has no predisposition for death, only for the fight. Luckily, he forgives the tribe this one mistake. He shall not again.

A party of tribesmen take a cart and prepare to cross the river to the other tribe, to trade for their strange animals. The question immediately arises of who will go with them and what will they bring to trade?

The tribe currently has no knowledge of what the other tribe would want.
>>
Well at least he isn't pissed.
>>
Being the instruments and some plants. Have Rina go with them to translate.
>>
>>20826913
We will bring a set of our scaled armor and the one of smithy who knows how the build it. If they choose this they have the promise of the smithy staying long enough to tech them.

We also bring seeds and someone who knows basic agriculture. The person will stay and help them build a field for themselves.

We offer them a choice of either of these in exchange for basic knowledge of animals and a few of their cows

Also we should bring a son of one of the prominent members of our tribes and offer to have her union with one of the daughters of a prominent member their tribe, thus joining the two. This will be a separate deal from the cow thing though.
>>
>>20826544
If we're going to sacrifice guys, we should take a cue from the aztecs, and let the die with honor. i.e some kind of ceremonial combat.
>>
>>20826939
Seconded but also with a small group of warriors. They are currently peaceful, but only a fool would send out valuables and a priestess without an escort.
>>
>>20826913
Instrument's, bone trinkets and some plants. Don't give them any weapon/armor!
>>
>>20826990
Thats why I suggest we send the idea of marrying one of the prominent sons of our tribe to one of their prominent daughters. It would solidify a union between our tribes and ensure peace, and because we have the male in the relationship e would most likely sat the dominant of the two.
>>
>>20826962
Second all of this, except the part where we give advanced armor to the people who have already explained to us that they pray to a Lion Spirit of War. Maybe they'd be interested in our wheeled carts instead?
>>
>>20827039
agreed
however, with fall upon us now, and at a 3rd of our food stores, I think it would be best to gather food for the winter
>>
>>20827046
I agree, we should avoid advancing their weaponry and armour. Instead we could show them the wheel.

Learning husbandry should also be a focus of ours, since it'll pay off big time when winter comes around.
>>
>>20827070
At worst we can turn to cannibalism.
>>
Okay, clearing this up then. The party will consist of:
A few tribesmen
A few warriors
Rina

and they'll be taking
Seeds
Bone trinkets
Instruments
A farmer
A craftsman who knows how to make carts

Do you wish to proceed with this load?
>>
Yes, we should trade our knowledge of the Wheel with their knowledge about those strange animals.

Anon's idea of a political marriage is excelent, we should do that now or in the spring. I for one would vote for food gathering this autumn and marriage [if may be] in the spring.
>>
>>20827161
Yes, sir.
>>
>>20827161
Why should we give them the seeds? The carts are already good things to trade and I think it should be enough to secure their knowledge on the animals.

But come to think of it, it's a good idea, we could use that as extra leverage in case they disagree with our initial offer.
>>
>>20827166
Agreed, food now marriage later. We should look for someone in the village to select now though. Do any of our names villagers have a son in his teens?
>>
See as how we're so interested in diplomacy, would now be a good time to start thinking about some form of actual government? A proper chief at the very least? Our population's getting pretty large, some form of rule could bring order to the tribe, and could represent the tribe in confrontations or diplomatic meetings.
>>
>>20827205
Defiantly something to think about on the next turn mojo.
>>
>>20827205
I agree. We need a council made of the head chieftain (I nominate Trym), and the other clan heads. They could come together and use a system of voting in order to make decisions for the tribe. Besides that I say we have a separate system through which our gods and our elders can have an influence on the tribe. Possible three separate votes, one from the clans, one from the elders, and one from the gods. Together those votes make the village's decisions.
>>
>>20827190
Technically everyone's in their teens and early adulthood, the average span of life for prehistorical people was 25-35 years.

Also, I hope Brit's birth rate formula takes into account the reduced percentage of successful births. Basically women were more or less breeding machines, one of the main reasons being that few of the kids survived their early years.

>>20827205
Too early imho. Tribal leadership is good enough for now. It's obvious that our next form of government will be monarchy, where the king is the tribe's chief with an added "divine blessing" of some sorts
>>
>>20827280
I was thinking our next form of government would be Oligarchic just because we already have a group of elders who are wise.
>>
>>20827334
Actually you're right, Oligarchy followed by a form of Monarchy [with strong despotic tendencies]
>>
>>20827280
Actually, IIRC Britfag made a reference to our type of government becoming unwieldy and that was a few threads back. A new form of government might be called for fairly soon.
>>
>>20827280
Thanks for pointing that out. I'll adjust my population growth algorithms.

With Rina leading them, the pioneering traders set off across the river. They are greeted by the other tribe with, while not joy, at least with a cordial welcome. The crow shaman speaks the tribe's language and is interested to meet Rina, asking many questions about Chani, outside of the trading. In short, the tribe has little desire for the bone trinkets, having many of their own design and while they are interested in the drums, they are more eager to trade for the cartwright's services. They offer four of their beasts, who they refer to as cows, in exchange for the cartwright teaching them for a year.

How will the tribe respond?
A) Counter-offer
B) Refuse
C) Accept

Added information will influence the chance of success in an action.
>>
>>20827607
A) 6 cows
>>
Try to haggle for more cows, they are asking him to leave his family for a whole year and all the offer is four cows!
>>
>>20827648
I will change my answer
A) 8 cows and half a year with them.
>>
>>20827607
A) Six cows and knowledge of how to create leather. In addition to the car man's service we'll throw in the drums.
>>
Make sure we get an equal number of male and female cows.
>>
>>20827680
Never mind, I change mine to 8 cows as well.
>>
>>20827607
A. Counter offer.

We are all aware of how birds and bees work so it seems like it would be disadvantageous to give them a skill they can learn forever for 4 cows which will not last too many years. I would counter offer the drums and the cartwright's services in exchange for 3 cows and a male cow (Bulls, I know, but i'm going the extra step since our tribe has no idea what a male cow would be called.)
>>
>>20827694
That's now how animal husbandry works, we only need one bull for about a dozen heifers. Bulls are hard to control and don't provide anything we want. Lets only get one bull and the rest heifer, preferably milk producing ones.
>>
>>20827651
>only 4 cows
You have no idea how much a cow is worth. A cow is, if properly bred and pastured, worth at least a gallon of high-fat milk a day.
4 cows is great. 3 cows and a bull would be even better.
>>
>>20827707
Cows are for both genders. A female cow is called a heifer, a male is a bull.
>>
>>20827694
Right on, but we could probably make due with one or possibly at most two Bulls to get our herding set up, I think. Maybe I low balled it on mine as far as the number but eh. 4 cows and a bull, perhaps? Let's try to be reasonable.
>>
Guys you counter with more than you want to get what you really want. that is why you say eight to get six.
>>
>>20827740
I learn new something every day, thanks boss. Way I see it, though, 3 cows and 1 bull has two votes.
>>
>>20827607
Of course, you should try to obtain a good game balance. Since this is a game and not a 1:1 simulation, growth should be bigger than real-life, not only because it would suck to have a yearly increase of ~10 people, but the game also has fertility gods that can influence the nunbers beyond what the reality would be.

As for the cattle, 3 female and 1 male cow would be excelent, along with someone to teach us about their breeding and eating habits, along with advices to ensure the herders won't get killed by an angry bull.
>>
>>20827722
Seeing as how this is the first time the tribe is seeing cows, they probably wouldn't have a clue what Animal Husbandry is.
>>
>>20827827
That's just what I was going to say.
>>
>>20827889
Trial and error. That's what the learnin' process is all about. We will need to build an enclosure for them though so they don't eat our crops.
>>
> I mis-spoke, it would seem. Also, apologies for the delay. It seems I've been acting as un-official councillor for many of my friends for some time now.

After some wrangling and difficulties with the translation, the price is finally agreed upon. Three heifers and one bull are granted to the tribe, along with a young boy who acts as a cowherd and the tribe is assured knows at least the basic essentials of caring for them. The traders leave quite happy with the exchange. Some of the other tribe expressed interest in the pots of seed that the tribe brought, but with nothing else to trade, they let the opportunity slide.

The bounty of food gathered this year far exceeds anything the tribe has gathered in go before. Between the bounty of the fields and the fish from the river, not to mention some of the hunters going and fetching deer from the forest, the tribe has more than enough food to last the cold winter!

Where are we on writing? Because goddammit, we need to record the Heroic Feats of Trym Wolfsbane, lest they be forgotten in our tribe's history.

> Trym's injury was a typo. My bad!

The cattle bartered for from the other tribe are confined within a pen to keep them from wandering off, either to get killed by wolves, or to eat the crops in the (currently empty) fields. They seem fairly happy in their enclosure, at least.

With the numbers of the tribe growing daily, the wise ones consider enforcing a new form of rule. An idea is passed around of the heads of the families acting as rulers, giving orders, while the rest of the tribe scurries about and serves. This system isn't too much different from the current approach; it's just more rigidly enforced. Those who step out of line would no longer be afforded the same leniency they once were.
>>
>>20829463
> No writing as yet, whatsoever. All the tribe's stories, knowledge and traditions are passed on aurally.
