You are Gerald DeFlynn. After returning to Sidewinder base, you discovered your team had been challenged to a battle. Accepting the Coyote team's challenge, you spend your free time training Eri some more.

Audrey left on her own, causing a small amount of panic, but she was safe and sound in the up and coming town. You have a 'talk' with Tom, before returning home.

The next day your team goes to the designated battle zone. The Coyotes proved crafty, anticipating your moves early on, putting a lot of pressure on Vince and the Hound Soldier. With some quick thinking, you manage to turn the tables, and after a period of attrition, Team Sidewinder came out on top.

Your Heldigunner, the zoid you chose for this particular battle, took the worst beating, but repairs shouldn't be too costly. Vince's damage proved mostly cosmetic, and Audrey walked away without anything more than a scratch on her Zabre.

["Good job, everyone!"] Eri congratulates excitedly. ["I got the Gustav ready whenever you want to head out."]

You move your Heldigunner over to the the Command Wolf LC Audrey downed.

"Hey, you alright in there?"

There isn't any movement, but you get a crackely message.
"We're all fine. Just need a little bit to reboot the command system."]

"Need any help?" you offer.

["Nah, I got it. Good battle, man."]

"Was gonna say the same thing."

["Vince!"] another one declares. ["You might have beaten me again, but I'll get you next time!"]

Vince ponders before responding. ["...Do I know you?"]

The warrior you think was named Dankirk snarls. ["You bastard! This is the third time I've lost to you, and you're saying you don't even remember me?!"]

["Sorry, pal,"] Vince says dryly, ["I'm bad with faces and names."]

"Anyway, nice battle, everybody." you say, trying to calm the situation.

["Nice battle my ass! Next you're dead, Vince!"]

["Bro, just let it go."] the other pleads.

After heading back to the Gustav, you load up the Heldi and Gordos, and start heading back to base.

"So do we start getting more money for this battle?" Eri asks.

["We still got to go up a few more ranks."] Vince explains. ["They were lower than us too, so we probably didn't go up this time."]

He's probably right. You were ranked 83rd place before, hence why the Coyotes challenged you in the first place. But whatever, a win is a win.

You pull the zoids in the hanger and hop out. Audrey and Vince busy themselves backing their respective zoids into their own bays.

Eri had said something about taking the battle license test today. There's some work to be done on base as well. Some jobs might have come up on the ZBC Database too.

You go to Eri just as she's getting out of the Gustav.
"Hey beautiful. So when's this test?"

"In a few hours." she says. She didn't sound particularly enthusiastic. "I guess I'll head over there after going over the damage we had from that last battle.", she adds after fidgeting a bit.

"Uh uh, none of that." you scold, wrapping your arms around her. "You don't need to waste any energy before the test. I want you to use this time to mentally prepare."

"But-" she protests, but you shush her.

"Trust me on this. We can cover for you this time."

She pouts visibly, but shrugs in resignation.
"Alright, fine."

"By the way, have you decided on the zoid you'll use?"

She frowns. "No. I can't make up my mind what would be the most likely to help me pass. What do you think I should take?"

My personal recommendation would be the Molga. You wouldn't do well with the Zaber and nobody but Vince can pilot the Hound.

The Cannon Tortoise is right out, and I'm thinking the Gordos and Red Horn might be a bit clunky.

The Molga is user friendly, you know it well after working on it so much, has enough guns, and is reliable as hell.
>>
>>20703127
molga. Just because is an easy mech to use and after all the modifications you know its systems about as well as I do

I also think the Molga would be a good one for her to use, though the Red Horn and Gordos can be used.

"Heh, yeah." Eri says with a grin. "But," she begins thoughtfully, "I've never actually piloted it."

"We can fix that." you assure her. "Just go out for a bit in it and you'll get the hang of it. Come on, get it ready and I'll give you some instructions."

"Okay."

You slide in front of the monitor and bring up the ZBC bulletin. You sift through the content, seeing what might catch your eye.

Militia training: 1,000 credits.
Spare with new town militia enlistees.
You remember seeing this before. It's for a different town, you think. It's by the coast of the Zine Desert Strait. The same river you had to cross for the last job.
It pays 1,000 credits.

Preserve Guardian
Poachers must be discouraged on a nature preserve.
This one is also something you've seen before. Some endangered species of Hare or something needs to be guarded. You don't see why someone would even bother poaching them, to be honest.

Pays 500 credits per person for two days of patrolling. Maximum of three for the contract. Seems all three spots are free.

Underwater research.
Scientist is hiring pilots to operate underwater for five days. Zoids will be provided. Must be some government funded project. Pays 3,000 credits per pilot, though you'd have to set aside five days in a row for it.

>What do?
>>
>>20703537
Militia training or preserve gaurdian sound like easy money to be honest. Given that whole wild zoid thing, I'd rather avoid dealing with the government. Or giant robot megalodons
>>
>>20703537
Preserve Guardian and Underwater research both look cool the first due to genre savviness the second just seems fun plus with the heldi and sinker we can do it.

>>
>>20703537
Underwater research is interesting but it takes a while and means we're going to get attacked by a giant shark.

Preserve guardian might be fun, at least interesting.

Militia training isn't that interesting but hey, might have unexpected benefits.

I think Preserve Guardian sounds best but some research on the hares would be good to do first.

Eh, you could see yourself enjoying a quiet patrol job. There are three spots for the contract. You'll sign yourself up, and if there's any openings left, you'll see if anyone else wants to come with you.

Eri brings the Molga to the doors. The canopy opens up, and she leans out.
"You ready, hotshot?"

"Sure thing, hotpants." you answer. She laughs as you climb in. You both head out, and after some brief coaching, she get's a feel for the Molga's handling.

"I think I'm all set." she says. "You want to head over there now, since we're out here?"

>What do?
>>
>>20703787
"Sure thing, I'll cheer you on from the sidelines.

Remember that the steering can be a bit shallow but you can make it faster by fishtailing it, just let the back wheels lose traction and spin like that."

Make sure that home base knows we're going out for a bit.
>>
>>20703787
"Ok, I'll let Vince and the others know, then we'll go."

After returning to base for some brief preparations, you both head out again, and after some traveling reach the ZBC Terminal. Eri remains quiet the whole trip, you assume it is because she's nervous.

After pulling in through the wall entrance, you park and dismount. After checking the time, you find you have a good hour to kill.

>What do?
>>
>>20703905
We've got an hour to kill and if we let Eri focus on the match this early she's going to worry herself sick. All she has to do is stay calm and just do what we've taught her.

So spend the next half hour distracting her, lightly flirting, getting ice cream and/or lunch. Once it gets closer give her a few pointers, make sure she's calm, relaxed and ready. Make sure she doesn't worry too much and isn't too nervous.
>>
>>20703938

Ice cream. Definitely ice cream.
>>
>>20703787
You lead Eri over to the entertainment district. You talk about movies and other unimportant stuff while you enjoy an ice cream cone and sit on a bench in the small picnic area. She relaxes a little bit, but you still think she looks tense.

Finally it's time. You walk with her to the Terminal building to finish the registration process. She stops in the middle of the steps and looks up at the large tower.

You watch her quietly for a bit before trying to get her attention.
"Eri." you address her. She continues to stare off into space. "Eri!" you shout lightly. She jumps a little before acknowledging you.

"Sorry." she says, before heading inside. You both walk through the lobby, heading toward the main desk. She pauses again and fidgets. You wait some more before she speaks again.
"Gerald." she says nervously.

"Yes?" you answer, as carefully as you can. She turns to you, eyes full of fear.

"Maybe this isn't a good idea." she utters. "I mean, I could fail, and the registration fee you have to pay even if you fail, and that could be a waste of money, and I don't want to waste the team's money and-"

She's getting cold feet. You can't say your surprised. She already failed once, after all.

Just trust in the Molga, the Molga knows what he's doing. You can do it Eri, MOLGA STRONG."

Give her a hug.
>>
>>20704212

You might want to put your trip back up.
>>
>>20704318

You gently put your arms around her shoulders and pull her into a reassuring hug.
"Eri, don't worry about something like a stupid fee. It's just money. And don't worry about something as stupid as failing. People fail, I fail, you fail, what matters is we get up and try again."
You pull your head back a bit a look at her face.
"I'm here with you. I'll be here to help you up however many times you need me to. You got me, and the Molga, something we built together. There's nothing to be afraid of."

She says nothing, instead leaning into you and letting out a deep sigh. You both sway side to side lightly for a bit. Finally, she pulls herself up and gives you a kiss before releasing you.

"Alright, I'm gonna go up to that test, and I'm gonna kick its sorry ass." She says in a defiant huff. She trots over to the receptionist to fill out the forms. The woman then directs her to the waiting area, where they'll bring her zoid from where you both left it.

As she heads out to the other room, you call out to her.

"Molga Strong!" you bellow.

She turns back and pumps her fist in the air.
"MOLGA STRONG!" she respounds in a lung curdling cry. More than a few odd looks are directed her way.

God damn it, you love that woman.

You quickly make your way up to the observation room. You impatiently wait for the test room doors to open. They eventually do, and Eri comes out into the arena. First is the obstacle coarse. She clears it, admittedly roughly. A screen hanging in the arena informs you she passed that segment.

You whoop with excitement, and the next phase begins. She goes after the moving targets with great fervor. She doesn't clear it as fast as you did, but she gradually takes them out. She gets down to her last target with thirty seconds left on the clock. She closes in after it, all the while you cheer loudly, despite the fact she likely can't hear you.

She deftly lands a shot o the target, causing it to burst. The test ends with 15 seconds left on the timer.
"Yeah!" you roar triumphantly as the confirmation is displayed on the screen.

She passed.

Your train of thought is interrupted by some low chuckling. You turn to see an older with brown hair standing near you.

"Friend of yours?" he asks.

You nod sheepishly, now a bit embarrassed by your outbursts. "You could say that."

"Its good that you are so supportive." he says with a friendly smile. You realize then that he looks vaguely familiar. You eye him, noting his plain yet gallant features. Then the realization hits you.

"Mr Walker!" you utter in surprise. He laughs heartily.

"You know me, then?"

You nod. This man is the leader of the Dune Savers team. You still remember seeing him on tv.

He smiles and shakes your hand.
"I like to come here sometimes and watch the youngsters. They always have so much energy."

"Not everyone who comes here to register is young." you say.

"Ha! Yes, that's true. I'm also here to register for a job."

"What would that be?"

"Preservation patrol." he says with pride. "It's something else I try to do when I have time."

"You're taking that job too?" you say, mildly surprised.

"Oh? So you are my comrade this time. Yes, nature is something very dear to me."

"I remember you were forming some sort of charity."

"Indeed, my goal is to form a wild life restoring organization that can one day heal this planet. It is my driving force."

You nod. "It was good to meet you in person, Conan, I hope we'll get along later."

"You as well, Gerald. My congratulations to your friend."

You wave goodbye as you head down to the lobby again. Eri should be finished stowing the Molga by now.

You wait in the lobby, and soon the telltale shock of amber hair comes into view. She heads to the receptionist to finish the last bit of legalities. You march your way over, taking just enough time for her to finish by the time you get there.

You grab her just as she turns to leave, causing her to give a surprised gasp as you spin around a full 360 degrees, before leaning her toward the floor and planting a big wet one on her mouth. You straiten yourselves up and pull away. Eri draws in a deep breath before grinning big at you.

"I did it." she says matter of factly.

"Yeah," you say coolly, running a hand through her hair. "You did it."

"Excuse me." you here the receptionist say. You look to see her eying, cheeks red. "Could you two take that somewhere else, please?"

You both excuse yourself quickly, running out the lobby, and bounding down the stairs like school children. She jumps at you as you reach the bottom, and you catch her in your arms, twirling her around.

"So," she says, short of breath as you set her feet on the ground. "What now?"

"Close your eyes."

"What are you up to?" she says as she complies. You reach over and place the necklace around her neck.

You get back into the Molga. You asked the guys on security detail where Cody was. Seems he volunteered to help with training some rookies.

You exit the terminal, and head towards base. The sun is setting against the desert plains.

"Got any plans?" Eri asks from the back seat.

"Got a job out west." you answer. "It's not til tomorrow though."

"So you're free?"

"Yeah. You wanted to do something?"

"Well," she says slyly. "We could make a detour."

"A detour?" you say, raising an eyebrow.

You turn the Molga to a small plateau, and park next to the rock face. He enter some commands, and the armor covering of the cockpit raises up before being cloaked.

"What are you doing?" Eri asks.

"Hang on." You hit one last button, and you are jolted forward as Eri gives a surprised yelp. The detachable cockpit launches from the rest of the zoids. It's been a while, but you still remember how to maneuver it. You ease up to the top, and land it gently in the center.

The canopy opens, and you're both treated to a breath taking view of the plains below, set aglow by the dusk.

"You sure know how to impress a girl." she comments as you help her out. You got a good ten meters from the cliff edge, so you aren't particularly nervous.

"I like to go all out, what ever I do."

You sit down next to each other, and do what couples do. You soon find yourself laying on top of her, both you and her breathing heavily.

"I was just making that up as I went." she admits. "I didn't have time for a boy friend. I was worried I wasn't doing things right this whole time."

"We'll see."

You climb back into the escape pod and fly it back down, disabling the stealth shield. It takes some tricky adjusting, but you manage to reattach the pod to the Molga's main body. Eri reminds you to make sure you refill the spent propel ant some time.

You head back to the hanger. It's late now, you'll need to get ready for an early trip in the morning.

"Watch for Vince." Eri warns as you pull into the Molga's block. "I don't want to think about what he'll do if he suspects anything.

She shakes her head. "Maybe next time, I'd like to stay here a bit longer before another trip."

"Audrey, you think you could tell me a little about the people you were with before?"

She drops her brush and shivers. "No."

Audrey looks at you, eyes fluttering. You hand her the plushy, which she takes and hugs, rocking back and forth.

"I remember the lab." she begins somberly. "It's the first thing I remember. The people in white would poke needles into me, shock me, put me into machines. If any of us didn't do what they said, we would be punished."

"Us?"

She nodded. "There were children besides me there. They didn't let us talk to each other, but I would see them in the larger rooms. Usually whenever I felt sick and was taken to the infirmary. I got sick a lot. One girl was often laying next to me. We talked when no one was watching. Her name was Alice, she had pretty hair."

She hugged her plush tighter. "Sometimes there would be fewer of us. They would disappear."

"Did you find out where they went?" You ask hesitantly.

Her eyes misted. "The adults always said the same thing if anyone asked. They said they 'broke'. Once Alice started crying and said her head hurt. They took her away. I never saw her again

You lay a hand on her shoulders, trying to comfort her, as well as stow the rage you feel building.
"When did you leave the lab?"

"It was around a year ago. None of the others were left. Kai came to my room and gave me his hand. He said I could leave with him. Of course I accepted."

Kai. He seems to work in that organization. He also seems to genuinely care about her. You don't understand why, exactly.

"Where did Kai take you?"

"The wasteland." she says in a chilling tone. Even you flinch hearing that. The place where a large asteroid struck. So great was the force that it broke the continent into pieces. Nothing lives there, nothing grows. Rumors that the most dangerous criminals around make that treacherous place their home.

"Did you see anything there?"

She shakes her head. "It's all barren. We would go underground somewhere, but I don't know the location, just that it's far away. Sometimes people would come and examine me a little, then leave."

You sigh. You don't know much more then you did before, but it's something. You smile and give her a warm hug.

"Thank you, Audrey, I know that wasn't easy for you."

She nods silently. You release the hug.
"Want me to stay with you for a little while?"

She shakes her head, a faint smile forming.
"I'm a big girl, I'll be fine."

Relieved, you wish her a good night, and go out the door.

(holy shit guys, I'm on google)

You need a drink, you realize. Something strong. Unfortunately you never figured out where the alcohol was kept, which means tracking down the man you were trying to avoid in the first place.

You take a minute to clean yourself up a bit, then head into the kitchen. Vince is nowhere to be seen. You decide to check his room instead. You go further down the hall, to what you think is the room he uses.

You knock, and you think you here him tell you to come in, it sounds a bit muffled. You ease the door open.
You've never seen his room before, it's rather spartan. About the only thing you spot besides a few empty cans and bottles is a plain desk. You notice a picture frame on it. Vince is sitting in the chair, legs propped up, enjoy some form of brew.

"And I thought Rick looked bad, why the long face, G?"

>What say?
>>
>>20716077
"Drink first, answer after that."

After he's handed us something.

"It's Audrey, I managed to coax a bit of her backstory out of her. The poor girl. I have no fucking idea how she's such a happy kid all the time with the sort of past she had. It's bad, it's real bad.

I just wish I could do more for her."
>>
>>20716139

Add, "And what's wrong with Rick?" to that.
>>
>>20716139
"Can I get a drink first?" you plead. "You got all the good stuff."

"Should buy your own." he advises, handing you a bottle. You guzzle nearly half of it before you continue.

"I had a talk with Audrey." you say with a sigh. "About what happened before we found her."

He frowns. "What you find out?"

"That there were more like her. Test subjects, for something. I guess she's the only one that survived."

You see him bight his lower lip. "Anything on the bastards behind it?"

You shake your head sadly. "Just that she was brought to somewhere out in the wasteland. Though thinking about it, that's a bit obvious."

He nods and scratches his head. "Figures they'd be in that hellhole." He glances at the picture on his desk, though it's facing away from you.
"You ok?"

"I guess/" you say. You polish off the rest of the bottle anyway.

>Thanks for the drink

"What about you, V, you feel like talking?"

He looks up and gives a long sigh. "I guess we've put it off long enough." he says somberly. He reaches behind his desk and pulls out a large, flourished bottle and set it down. He takes two cups and pours the content out into each.
"Bought this just for the occasion." he explains handing you a cup, taking the other in hand. You take a sip. It's some strong stuff.

He leans back into his chair, looking up at the ceiling thoughtfully. "I met Dan when are parents worked together on an excavation project. We were always trying to outdo the other, and became fast friends. We spent years restoring the zoids that our folks uncovered. Finally, about ten years ago, they were finished."

He takes a drink before continuing. "We got the bright idea of going out and changing the world. You know how things still were back then."

"Yeah." you affirm. You remember those chaotic years all too vividly.

"We met up with someone else along the way, and the three of us spent a year fighting the good fight. I'm proud to say we did a lot of good then." he says with a smile, that quickly fades. "Trouble with heroics, though, you start believing your a hero. Think you can't loose."

"Whose was the third person?" you ask, though you get the feeling you know what the answer is. He reaches for the picture on his desk, then hands it to you.

"See for yourself."

You take the frame and look over it. There are three people shown, arm in arm. On the left is Vince. He looks about the same as now really, same stern, squarish features. He does look less...weary, you notice.

In the center is a grinning, energetic looking man with frazzled, amber colored hair. You figure out who he is rather quickly. And on the right you see a familiar face. He looks a little different, but there's no mistaking his identity.

"Kai." you confirm out loud.

"Yeah, Kai." he takes another drink. "I don't know what he's up to, but I can't believe he's working for those people."

"What happened next?"

"After a while, we got word that some people were trying to gather all the lowlifes, deserters and radicals into one organization. They went by the name Red Sand. We got this bright idea of picking a fight with them." His face becomes more solemn. "I was against it. I didn't think the risk was worth taking. I could have likely convinced Dan to pull out while we could. But I believed in him, he was a better pilot than me after all. So I stayed quiet. I regret that more than anything in my entire life."
>>
>>20725735
>>20726647

Trip again.
>>
>>20726647

He refills his cup and takes another long pull. You realize now that the bottle is more for him than anything.

"We had some success at first. Raiding their camps and wreaking havoc. We took down zoid after zoid, and for a while we really thought we were winning. But the thing with an organization, when they get attacked, they don't just sit back and take it."

"One night as we were making camp, they made their move." He wipes his face and takes a deep breath. "They were everywhere; Horns, Zabres, god damn Storks and Raynos in the air. We were whipped before it even began. If we had figured that out sooner, we might have gotten away, but you know, heroes."

He empties his cup before continuing. "Dan told us to make a break for it while he held them off." He stumbles on his words. "I should have stayed with him. I should have." He holds his head in anguish.

"Something...I don't know if it was a beam or missile or what, but it hit Dan's cockpit. It just ...exploded. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, but his zoid fell, and I couldn't hear anything on the com. Just silence until Kai started screaming at me to run. And I did."

You've never actually seen a grown man cry in person before, but that's what he does. Bitter tears trickle down his stony face.

"I watched my best friend die and I just ran. Some flyers tailed us for a while, but we lost that at some canyons. I hid in a cave for two days like some rat."
>>
>>20726745
"I went back after a few more days. he says after wiping his eyes. "There was nothing there. No proof that anyone had fought or died. Just barren, uncaring slag."

He eyes the bottle and takes it, guzzling down strait from the bottle. He stops and takes a breath.
"After that, Kai just drifted away, and I never heard from him again. He hadn't known Dan for as long, but he still took it pretty hard. I came back here, and told George and Eri what happened. I patched the Hound up, and left. Maybe I should have stayed, but I couldn't bare seeing their faces."

He reaches for the photo in your hand, and you gladly return it. He looks at it briefly before placing it back in its original spot before sitting himself up.

"And that's my sorry tale." he says, exhausted.

"It's fine. I'll listen again even you ever need to get something of your chest."

"Here," he says, handing you the bottle, now only a third full. "I'll give you the rest. Drink it on a happier occasion."

You thank him and head out of the room. He doesn't seem as gloomy as he did when he started talking.

You head to the shower. Reaching for the handle, the door opens prematurely. Rick steps out, looking more colorful than before.

"Hey, man, how's your hang over?"

"Better." he says. "How'd things go with Eri's license test?"

"She passed. We were pretty excited about it."

Yep, he's back to normal. You shove him out of the way playfully.
"That's not any of your business is it?"

"Heh, yeah, I guess not." he winks. You think he winked anyway. How does the man see anyway?

You get in a quick shower and head off to bed. The next morning you head to the kitchen for some food. Afterwards you check the position on the patrol contract. You'll need to get going in a few hours for it. Sadly, it looks like the last spot was filled.

You decide to see what you can find on the area you're going to. The Reed Forest Preserve. There are a number of animals there, but the most endagered is the Delpoi plain hare. Seems they only lived on this continent, and after the asteroids, only survived on this half.

You find a photo of the animal in question. It has a shiny bronze pelt. You have a better appreciation for the value poachers might have for it. Still seems a bit silly to you, though.

You don't know who else will be on the job, since that info is not given by the ZBC bulletin. You only know Conan Walker will be there because he told you in person.

You check and find the Preserve is funded by the local government, and has the ZBC's support, as well as Walker's charity, Dune Save. Battles are not allowed here, and there's a nice Garrison presence in the area, no real bandit activity. Just some schmucks with pop guns going after the little bunnies.

You laugh at the thought of putting the fear of god in them with your Red Horn.

You don't have a camera on you, but you ask Eri and she says you can borrow hers. You give her a goodbye peck and retrieve the camera, you Get into the Horn. Since the Gustav isn't much faster, and you're going by yourself, you leave it behind.

You head west of the base, heading for the mountains just before the coast. As the sun rises over head, you finally see the green in the distance.

Another hour passes, and you soon reach a small outpost. You get in contact with them, and tell them you are here for the contract.

["You're late."] the man on the other end gripes

"Sorry, I'm a bit far away."

["What ever. Just start moving along the edge of the preserve boundaries. And try not to squish the animals your suppose to be protecting, will ya'?"

"Where are the others?" you ask.

["You all patroll individualy. Gives more coverage. Now get moving already!"

(it does)

You start patrolling eastward, going over the grass covered ground. You keep an eye out for the hares, and any other animals you could possibly squish by mistake. You doubt they'd get anywhere near your hulking zoid, though.

You use you radar to scan the area. It doesn't have the specs to locate people or animals from any distance, but you suspect poachers would try and get close in small vehicles like jeeps or mini zoid craft before hoofing it.

You don't pick up anything nor see any animals, save for the occasional bird that flies past.

>Continue patrolling
>Getting out for a bit couldn't hurt
>>
>>20729167
Patroll for a while long, we only just got started.
>>
Should have used the Molga. How are we supposed to catch poachers when they can see us coming and hide?

Can the Red Horn's sensor suit detect something as small as a human? Also, what the hell is an Infra-Red Laser Searcher and what does it do?
>>
>>20729167

I'd say hop out for bunny pictures, but my paranoia warns me that such actions would end badly.
>>
>>20729197

Must be for locating those laser grids you see in heist movies.
>>
I'm thinking it might be a good idea to not rely entirely on the zoids sensors and periodically look around with binoculars. The poachers may have a camouflaged camp set up where they can cut up what they kill so they don't have to waste space carrying the entire animal around. What are they poaching again?
>>
>>20729272
Rabbits basically but yeah this is a good idea
>>
>>20729197
(I believe it is some kind of targeting laser/range finder.
You're job is more scaring them off then actually catching them.)

You decide to keep at it for now. Thankfully you don't have to do much adjusting as you navigate your route.

While eating your lunch, you see something in the distance approaching. As it gets closer you make out the custom Shield Liger.

"Hey, Mr Walker, how's your patrol?"

["Very good, young man."] he replies. ["I'm setting a faster pace for myself, to stagger the gaps in patrol."]

"That's not a bad idea. Seen the other guy?"

["I have. Some fellow in a Gojulas. Good and intimidating. He's going westward, like yourself."]

He speeds past you, give you a brief goodbye, advising you to stay sharp. You thank him and continue along.

Some hours pass, and the sun starts setting. You keep a look out, but don't see anything. You get a message from the outpost, saying you can come in for the night when it gets dark.

>What do?
>>
>>20729352

>>

>>
You look out for any trace of animals as you head back. You open the canopy and take out your camera, looking to and fro. You thought you catch movement further away, but whatever it was is long gone by the time you can get focused on the spot.

You reach the outpost and dismount, the sun nearly set. You catch one of the guards walking by.
"Is it really ok for me to come back? Who's going to watch during the night?"

He grins. "Any poacher who'd come in the night would need to be pretty brave. That's when the wolves come out." he explains. "And unless your in a robot dinosaur, you do not want to be near wolves in a dark forest. Besides, most of the hares go underground at night."

You suppose that makes sense. You head inside and head for the mess hall. Your joined by Conan a little later.

"Evening, Gerald." he greets. "Did you see one?"

"No poachers, sir." you say.

He laughs. "I meant the hares. They're quite lovely in person."

"Afraid not. I was wanting some pictures, but I never saw any."

"Not much." he admits. "Though you'll want to rest up. Patrols restart at four, to keep anyone slipping in just before dawn."

"That's pretty early. Do these patrols work?"

"They do. Now that the preserved is regularly patrolled, the number of hares are up. They're still endangered, but the population is healthy. Once our second day is up, the Garrison will have their own patrol. Then the contract will be made, to keep from tying their men up long term."

"Peh, they should just give us more Dontress'. Cheaper in the long run."

You recognize the voice from earlier. You look to see a portly man with a bushy mustache.

"That may very well be correct, Jeffry." Conan remarks.

"Back in the war, I didn't have no fancy juggernaut." the man says in a boastful tone. "Just had my gun, my Dontress, and these." He points to his groin before laughing raspily.

"You fought in the last war?" The man piques your curiosity.

"Damn right." he answers proudly. "Took on 3 Command Wolves all by myself. Bastards nearly got me with their teeth. My pop gun could hurt em, but I shot out the cables on their legs, see? Mobility kill."

"Sup', Rick, could you get Eri for me?"

["What, I thought we had something special between us?"]

"Put my girlfriend on the phone, smart ass."

You have to wait a few more minutes, but eventually Eri's voice reaches your ear.

["Hey, hotshot, how's the job?"]

"So far? One big pile of boring. I think I'd be genuinely excited to see a hare tomorrow, just for something to happen."]

"Cute. How's your day?"

["Just fixing up our zoids, and getting a little practice in. Tomorrow me and Audrey were going shopping."]

"A shame I missed out." you say dryly.

After some more small talk and shared goodnight, you hang up and get to the bunk you were provided.

You are awoken later by an obnoxiously loud bugle blaring in your face. Not really, but it might as well have been. You stumble out of bed, affix yourself as best you can, and head outside. Someone hands you a packet containing coffee and food.

You start eating lunch. You're getting fairly close to the zoid ahead of you. Eventually you'll over take him and pull ahead again.

>What do?
>>
>>20738155
Open comms with him, say hi, introduce ourself, ask if he's seen any bunnies.
>>
>>20738155
give him a hail.
Note to self: suggest our various teammates start participating in one on one fights.
>>
rolled 36 = 36

>>20738155
chat with him ask about armaments and his zoid why he took this job exct... be friendly :)
>>
>>20738155
Those are some pretty nice Republic Supercannons..... where'd you get them? We've got a little lady back at the base with a Gordos who'd love a set of big guns like that.
>>
>>20738311
doesn't actually have them, that was the only picture I had ready. it's a vanila gojulas

>>20738311

"Hey there." you greet over the com. "We haven't met yet, I'm Gerald." There is no answer on the other end. You try to get him talking. "What's your name?"

The zoid stops and turns around. You slow the Red Horn as the towering zoid stares back at you.
It raises one claw and begins waving it back and forth. Was that him waving at you?

"Can you not talk?"

The zoid dips its head down. You assume that's a nod.

"That's gotta be inconvenient." It dips its head once more.

>What do?
>>
>>20738615
Weird.
>>
>>20738615
Chat for a bit then continue patrol I guess
>>
>>20738615

Send messages?
>>
>>20738615
>doesn't actually have them, that was the only picture I had ready. it's a vanilla gojulas

This saddens me. The fact that our comrade cannot talk however, intrigues me! Wish them good luck and continue I guess.
>>
>>20738615
how about keying your radio in morse code?
>>
>>20738615
Are you enjoying the job?

Seen any of the hares?

Do you know morse code? I do and we can send messages that way if you want.
>>
>>20738698
>>20738686
You would use a flash signal if you had one installed. Though you don't actually know the code for it.
"Well, I don't want to keep you, so I'll be going ahead. Good luck out here."

The Gojulas waves once more, and you pass it by. You continue on looking for any activity in the field.

An hour later, you've opened the canopy again to survey with your binoculars. Doesn't reveal much of anything. You're about to close the canopy up when a flash of bronze catches your attention. You look and see a number of hares in the distance, socializing.

They're far away, but you could likely get some nice pictures if you got closer.

>What do?
>>
>>20738783

Hm.... Rabbit stalking... This does seem like the perfect opportunity.
Go for it, but be prepared for unexpected events, like poachers.
Or we could wait till we aren't the one patrolling, surely the bunnies will congregate like this again?
>>
>>20738783
Oooh, bunny pictures.

Okay, approach as close as we can in the Red Horn without causing any spooking. Open up the cockpit and see if we can get anything good with the zoom function.

If not we may have to get out for 1 minute to approach, take the pictures and come back.
>>
>>20738810
>>20738813
I'd say take a few pictures, then try to get closer in the red horn. That way if they spook we'll still have some shots. Because getting out of our zoid is just BEGGING us to return to find it hijacked by a poacher. And our Zoid Affinity isn't anywhere near the level needed for our zoid to refuse to work for someone else.
>>
You try to zoom in with the camera, but there are no shots worth taking. You move the Horn closer, ever so cautiously. You get a step closer with no trouble. After another step though, they raise their heads up and start looking around, they must have noticed the ground shake, or maybe the sound.

You take a few pictures from your new position, but they're nothing special. You'd need to get closer for anything worthwhile. You doubt you can go any further with the Horn though.

>Get out on foot
>Wait for another time
>>
>>20739075
Make sure we have our rifle and sidearm with us. That the Red Horn is locked down and unusable by anyone else, and that we have scanned our surroundings VERY thoroughly.

Once that's done we can get out, take some pictures and return. We need to get Audrey some pictures of fuzzy bunnies.
>>
>>20739091
Alright. I guess we may as well.
>>
Fuck no!

Wait till later when whatshisface can show us after the job
>>
>>20739075
Get out on foot....take out AZ Rifle
>>
>>20739091
You look all around one more time, scanners and binoculars both. You find nothing, so you lower the zoid into stationary position. You lock the console, grab your rifle, just in case, then hop out. You close the canopy with the outside latch button, and start hiking.

It takes you nearly ten minutes, but you finally make it up a hill that overlooks the area. You lay your rifle down, and take out you camera. You kneel down and focus the camera on them. They look great from here, their pelts shining in the light. You quickly take some photoes of the group, then try to focus on a sole hare.

'ssss'

Picking out one, you get a nice mugshot of it, and try and get a picture of it mid hop.

'Sss.'

Wait, what's that noise? You look down and see something on your knee. You freeze.

There's a snake crawling on you. You don't know what type it is, but you know you do not want it on you.

>What do?
>>
>>20739349
I knew something like this would happen. Stay perfectly still. Also, inb4 it's a harmless gardner snake or something.
>>
>>20739369
Same here.
>>20739349
Probably shouldnt shoot it considering this is a reserve...back away very slowly
>>
>>20739349
Do not make any sudden movements, try to identify type if possible, very slowly and carefully back away.
>>
>>20739369
I actually expected the gojulus to attack whilst we were out of the zoid
>>
>>20739402
But the snake is on us.
>>
>>20739435
How fully on us? If it's just slithering a bit over our knee we might be able to slide our knee out from under it, it it's fully resting on our leg we have a problem.
>>

While you don't know what type it is, you do see that the sides of its cheeks are puffed out. You recall hearing something about that being a sign a species is venomous.

It is currently resting halfway on your leg, its head above your knee, with its belly over your kneecap.

Your rifle is laying nearby, you could reach it without much effort. Or you could wait for it to move on.

>Lift it of with rifle
>Wait and hope
>Others
>>
>>20739580
Do we have a shortwave radio on us? If not...lift it with rifle
>>
>>20739580
Very slowly and carefully lift it off with the rifle. It doesn't really want to fight us, we don't want to mess with it, we ought to be able to come to a consensus on this.
>>
>>20739580

Photo op with a snake?
>>
>>20739733
Totally this!

I feel so ashamed of myself now...
Here's to hoping Gerald doesn't die from snakebite.

You slowly aim the camera at the snakes head. You press the button, listen to the quiet mechanism for a second, and then,

>Flash

The snakes head jumps back and convulses on your leg, sliding off harmlessly to the ground. In the span of .2 seconds you grab your rifle, jump back, and are already sprinting away.

Suck it, nature.
>>
>>20740263
Suck it nature indeed. We got our pictures now back to the Red Horn to continue the patrol.
>>
>>20740263

That went better than expected.
>>
I think I'm going to end the thread progression here.

When would you guys prefer to start next week, Wendsday or Thursday?
Trying to pick out the most optimal schedule
>>
>>20740263

Check to see how snake picture came out. Mybe we could put it up on our wall of "Stupid Ideas I Lived Through"
>>
>>20740312
I can follow it for most of both days, but I'd prefer to start on Wednesday.
>>
>>20740312
Well earlier's better because it means we have to wait less before the next thread! So Wednesday.
>>
recently though, on wendsday activity is very low, so I'm unable to advance the thread much, causing it to drag on more days than I'd like.

Idealy I could wrap things up on the third day, so I have time for myself

Also once I ever start working again, I likely won't be able to do a thread for several days at a time, likely only 2 in a row
>>
>>20740545
Run it whenever you feel would be the best time OP. If thats thursday then so be it.

Love you quest so far by the way. It's been great.
>>
I think I'll try starting the next thread thursday and see how it goes
