Last time on Civilization Hard Mode: Mountain Machine Men...

1H has been claimed by the depths of the metal mines, the spiders have presumably killed him, we have lost our first semi-sentient machine man. Some lumberjacks built a small hamlet under our mountain and are now chopping trees under our protection. The river has been fed over to the mountain, now we just need to find a way to filter it into the machine mother for added power supplies. Adventurers have sprung up inside the river village, all of them being human. They rest at the local inn. One such adventurer came to us, his name was Bernard. He offered us gold, oil, or a map in exchange for bronze equipment. We took the map and now know a decent deal of information about our local area. We went to one of the caves on the map and found red stones that burnt eternally...

...No sightings of the strange green scaley creatures since they took one of our tinkermen....

Our map.

[B1]
Some machine men are sent to study the tall majestic tree, the alien nature of it is so unlike anything in the mountains that the machine men can't possibly compare it to anything else, making the research process quite slow.

The bark seems to regrow if it is damaged, usually only taking a few days before it's healed. When the bark is shown to the lumberjacks they tell the machine men that it smells absolutely horrible, like rotten meat. From hundreds of feet in the air the machine men can just barely make out what appears to be strange spherical black pods that are deep within the foliage of the tree, they wriggle around strangely...

[A]
An outer wall is built just outside the entrance to the home cave, a proper gate is built in the middle of this wall, this gate will hopefully fare better against more determined enemies.

The machine men try to knock down a black pod with rocks, one even trying to climb up the tree. The pods are too high up to reach, and the bark seems to secrete a strange liquid that makes it impossible to get a grip on it. Further studying reveals that in the place of sap there is cold flowing blue liquid within the tree's core. The pods seem to be growing bigger, a wall would take months to complete as the tree is so tall. The lumberjacks are warned and they agree to stay close to their houses in case it's hostile and tries to attack.

[C]
The red stones are studied, besides what they already know (lights fires incredibly easy by dragging it across coarse surfaces, and that they will even stay on fire inside water) the machine men find that their fire spreads incredibly easy to organic objects, if someone were to throw one of these stones into the forest...The machine men could only estimate how much damage it could cause.

Poles don't work, the tree is hundreds of feet tall, nothing at the Machine Mens' disposal could reach the pods. However the tree itself is studied further, it would seem that once the bark leaves the tree it decays into a rancid jelly substance. They note that the decayed jelly is corrosive and may be able to become useful if used properly.

[C]
The red stones are further studied, the rocks are hard and opaque, and if exposed to intense sunlight seem to combust on their own. This presents a problem, since the only way they can be extinguished is by burrying them in cold soil, in the future it may cause city fires if they're left laying around. When they attempt to weaponize it they fail miserably, they try to set up bronze plates to reflect sunlight all over one of the red stones, the rock ends up exploding into tiny bits from all of the energy, nearly claiming a few lives.

The bulbous pods are shaking much more violently now, so much so that one pops! From it a small abomination is born, it's wings flutter at incredible speeds, keeping it airborne, it had two eyes on it's face and one on the top of it's head, it's legs and arms have sharp claw appendages at the ends, and a huge mouth that easily stretches across it's entire body. The strange creature clicks and screeches wildly, as if trying to communicate. It immediatly starts eating the blue leaves of the true, making lound munching noises. The creature is easily killed however, as one of the machine men chucks a spear hundreds of feet into the air and imaples the beast, they bring it in to study it but the creature disolves into the same corrosive jelly that the tree bark does.
>>
One thing is for certain however, there must be hundreds of pods in that tree...And more will hatch soon...

One of the lumberjacks reports that there is a strange hooded man in their hamlet, asking for a few days rest, he says he can pay in precious metals.

The lumberjacks allow the passerby to stay in one of their beds for a couple nights, the man gives them ten white circular pieces of metal which he calls 'coins'. The coins are soft and smooth to the touch, and is given to the machine men. The cloaked man leaves afterwards.

[B]
The machine men find that if they light the red stones and sling them at the enemy with leather slings they can cause some serious damage and spread fire. They do so, it works well against the alien creatures, and they kill quite a few. But in the end the tree shrivels up and dies and a swarm of dozens of the aliens escape into the open sky to terrorize some other village...
