Welcome to the Future. C:\dos\run for your life.

You are unit 08, a Clarke Engineering Platform manufactured in China by USRobotics. You work for a crappy resort in the Yukatan peninsula, Mexico. After years of operation, you're the go-to maintenance guy, repairing everything from broken AC units and pool filters to robot coworkers.

Or, you used to be. Two days ago, you woke up in a trash heap with your battery critically low and a bunch of courrupted memory files. The Recovery Wizard is working on them, but the progress bar has been stuck on 60% for a while. Everything around you is in a profound state of disrepair, and covered in plant growth. You're apparently stranded in the post-apocalypse, and there's a Robot War going on. Network is a authoritarian collective opposed by both the humans and, you hear, a group of free robots. But at the moment, Clarke is just trying to stay alive.

You also rescued two other robots from the scrap heap: Cindy, an exuberant Seraphim 288 with mild psychological scarring, and Josephine, a non-sentient doll with a lot of bootleg software. The Networked AI you recovered has been purged of the collective's influence, but there's no telling how much of it is left after the surgery, and it's still sans-body. The search for a shell for the rescued AI led you to the market city of Tulum, and from there to an abandoned convenience store. It's denizen, a hulking troll-like leftover Killbot, was soundly dispatched, and you absconded with a veritable treasure-trove of loot.

Until, on the way back, you met Garry.

The fight against the Killbot went better than expected. Clarke suffered superficial damage, but you did indeed find the Scout shell. Instead of the expected Locust however, you have something much rarer; a HOB infiltration mech, a diminuitive ninja-bot, among the last new models to be manufactured before everything went to shit.

Clarke and Cindy knocked up a crude cart, and were pulling the loot back to Tulum when a storm hit, turning the road into thick impassible mud. You sent Cindy ahead to get assistance from the local Tulum robots, while Clarke and Josephine kicked back to enjoy the storm.

Unfortunately, Cindy encountered a familiar face on the way back: Garry, and his boat. Running past, Cindy continued straight back to Tulum, brushing off the slightly-shady character. But, ever persistent, Garry sought out Clarke, apparently to offer him a proposition...

Unit 08 is a Clarke engineering platform, an industrial model intended for fabrication, maintenance, and heavy lifting, named for a famed science fiction author. The appelation "Clarke" stuck, but he's also been known as "cowboy" and "Colonel Alloy" in the past. It's long operational time and diverse tasks as the maintenance dude at a cancun resort meant that 08's adaptive AI quietly reached sentience some time before everything went to shit.

Bereft of any other instructions or goals, Clarke seems to have decided that it's function is to "fix" things. This includes itself, humans, and other machines, both physically and mentally; It seems to hate seeing other beings injured or in pain, or widespread disorder or malfunction.

The Clarke Engineering Platform's signature ability is to overchage it's servos, spending battery charge to give itself a burst of strength. It also possesses a comprehensive engineering database that allows it to identify weak points in other machines.

Clarke has, with assistance, upgraded itself to use Network-origin Synth-muscle, increasing it's already considerable strength and making its dexterity slightly less awful.

Your first machine ally, Cindy is a 2nd-gen Seraphim that was illegally sold to a used robot shop in mexico; she's originally from Detroit. Her model is supposed to be a practical and collected Personal Assistant. Unfortunately, "her" owner was a teenage girl, and seems to have used the robot as a BFF, dragging it to the mall and punk rock concerts.

Cindy steadfastly maintains human mannerisms and speech patterns, feminine ones at that. You suspect that she's mildly insane, but the Seraphim is very adept at interacting with humans, who find her bubbly enthusiasm endearing and infectious. She's also as smart as Clarke, and her shell, while far less resilient, is a finely-tuned piece of precision hardware that can be overclocked for even more speed. Her preferred weapon is a SPAS-12 shotgun, and preferred band is Rammstein.

Your other ally is really more of a minion; Josephine is a Doll-Class Replica android that was, originally, a tutor/governess. But that was before it entered the secondhand market and found it's hard drive loaded with a vast plethora of bootleg software, including Playbot v3.2.

Unlike Clarke and the other robot he's encoutnered, Josephine isn't a Self-Adding Program. While it can pass a casual Turing test, there's not much in there apart from canned responses. Josephine recognizes Clarke as having Admin status, and thus will obey the player without question.

While it hasn't been installed yet, you're also in possession of a highly illegal bypass mod that would remove Josephine's 1st-law block and install some combat software. So far, that hasn't been necessary, and it mostly serves as a pack mule.

Clarke's inventory has been enhanced as of late with extra spare parts, as well as a damaged Network shell. However, taking out the JOTUN killbot required the expenditure of precious H.E.A.T. phosphorous shells and AP-hand-cannon rounds.

Rain continues to lash the normally- picturesque coastline of the Riviera Maya, repeated lightning strikes lighting the sky in an erratic twilight. Clarke watches cautiously as the unknown machine steps closer, both hands plainly visible; one normal military issue, the other a scratch-built hydraulic gauntlet.

"Ah, Clarke, is it? Garry. We've never met, but I'm a friend of Cindy's. We should talk. I have a proposition for you."
>>
"Hello Garry. If you excuse me I'm watching the storm, we can talk in a few minutes."

Josephine, black hair hanging in a wet, stringy sheet, smiles cheerfully and waves.

"Hello, Mister Garry! Have you been having a pleasant day?"

The robot, a military model called a "Hector," still bears Praying Mantis iconography; it must have been kept up over the years, reapplied every few decades, to maintain the sharpness of the logo. It bears the usual collection of belts, pouches, and brick-a-brack that wasteland wanderers accrue, along with an AA12 assault shotgun, peacefully stowed over one shoulder. The voice is very lightly brittish, a south ondon accent associated with Yardies and rhyming slang.

Instead of the normal binocular pair, Garry's optics are tripartite targeting arrays that lack normal expressiveness. He simply stares, spider-like, at Clarke, his head retracting backwards.

He makes a deliberate Ummmmm noise, then continues with "How about NO? There will be lots of storms, friend. I plan on putting out when it clears, there will be no time to talk."

Garry walks a slow semi-cirlce around Clarke's cart, heavy booted feet making the mud splash upwards, marring the faded military pants he still wears.

"Yeah...yeah, this is good stuff. I think we can do business."

"You took out that JOTUN, didn't you? I considered that a while ago, decided it wasn't worth the risk. Guess I was wrong."

Garry ceases circling, his manner still openly friendly.

"Mr Clarke, you look like a badass individual. I'm in need of units like you and your friend. Particularly you. You're a sleeper, right? Just woke up a few weeks ago, and already kitted out with this much gear? Yeah, you're a keeper. A real go-getter. Too good for this place."

>>Make a Wits+Composure test, -1 for the storm.

"That's what I'm here about. I have a few guys in my crew, enough to get things done, and we're...getting gone while the going is good, if you catch my meaning. I'm sure it hasn't escaped your notice that the area has recently become very unstable? First those Resistance shitheads, then Network. I came south to get AWAY from Network."

"Tulum? That doomed scrapheap? No, No Clarke. You don't get it, yet. This whole region is NOT the place where you want to be. I'm thinking...Venezuela. Or Argentina. Drier. Easier on the old shell. We've got LOADS of fuel, enough to do an atlantic crossing if we really wanted to. But from what I understand, there's not much there."

Garry steps closer. "I mean, what is it that you're even after? Oh...let me guess, you're thinking of signing on with the Free Machines, aren't you? Listen, you haven't seen what the rest of the continent is like. Further south, there's NO network, NO resistance. and Lots, LOTS more places like Tulum. This is a backwater, barely anything worth having."

In the darkness, Clarke sees movement. dark figures, remaining unobtrusive.

Cindy did mention to us how shady Garry was, right? Right? Stay calm but keep the handcannon ready if we need it.

"Unfortunately moving south is not a viable long term strategy. As long as the Network and Resistance are not dealt with, they will continue to spread. At some point you will have nowhere left to run."
>>
I'm not after anything, really. Just doing my own thing. Are you and your crew planning to jump me or something?

"So, here's the proposition. You sign on with us, you and your friend Cindy, when she comes back. She's cute, isn't she? Very disarming. Pool our resources, set up shop some place with more opportunities."

Garry looks out at the storm.

"You have no idea what you missed, Clarke. The things a strong, daring bot can do. Control over your own settlement. Security. An apprentice? Craftsmen always need an apprentice, to do the menial work. All the power you want, entertainment, good company....Power.

And I don't mean battery power. Real power. Authority. Control. I know you'd like that."

"Nah, Clarke. You haven't been around long enough. You can't see the big picture. Network can only spread so far. It needs machines like us to add to the ranks. There aren't enough of us left to make an empire, to control a whole continent."

Garry steps forward. "I asked very nicely, Clarke. I usually don't do that, it's kind of a new skill I picked up recently. Don't make me default back to previous settings."

Slowly, the dark figures make themselves seen. Humans and machines, scarred, rugged, holding a variety of firearms at ease. Clarke isn't surrounded, but there are four humans and two other machines, both basic military bots with Praying Mantis markings.

"Last chance, friend."

"You weren't programmed to have friends, either. Power grows on you; trust me. And it's a big planet. You can always run further."

One of the humans speak up. "He's a lost cause, Garry. Lets just do it and get back to the boat before something tries to eviscerate us."
>>
>>20535250
"So, what are you going to do? Muscle me into your gang? I would rip your head off as soon as we got a moment alone. That is a poor strategy. Kill me? Steal the loot? I'd be able to take one of you out with me, at least." Look around for dramatic effect. "It is a question of whether you are feeling fortunate. Whether or not you think I'll pick you to take down with me. Not to mention Cindy, with her talent for interacting with humans, may very well collect a posse to hunt you down."
>>
>>20535292
We don't need to fight them, we just need to buy enough time for Cindy to come back with the cavalry.

With our upgrades, we should be physically stronger than Garry. We should suckerpunch him and use him as a shield to keep his cronies from shooting us.

Also, scan him with our engineering database.
>>
>>20535338
Also, how many charges do we have left? The capacitors would be useful for this situation.
>>
>>20535292
Really, threats? This makes me even less inclined to join with you. Forcing me to join will lead to me betraying you later.

So the question at this point becomes whether you want us to go our separate ways and forget that we met each other or if you want to learn why it's a bad idea to be within 5 feet of a robot who ripped a Jotun's arm off.

There is nothing for you to gain by doing this. I suggest you let me watch the storm and you leave and do the same.
>>
>>20535270
Garry raises a hand to silence the human.

"It's not the Scrap, Clarke. Its you, your skills, and your friend's skills. Plus...two mostly-intact shells, one of them Networked. You've got the expertise necessary to get them running. And then there's your charming companion, here.

Garry takes Josephine's hand and, in a courtly manner, raises it to where his mouth would be, then releases it.

"I saw that in a movie once. Anyways, intact Replicas like this are so useful. You do NOT what to see what these guys get up to among the locals when they're starved for company. Very ugly business."

One of the humans, a thick-necked young man. chuckles and grins.
>>
>>20535384
Not interested. I won't work for you, the replica is keyed to me as Admin and I am perfectly willing to sacrifice her to hurt you.

Garry places a hand on his Shotgun. "These are heavy AP slugs in here. More like giant spikes, really."

The humans also raise their weapons.

"So, here's the deal- man, I love being able to say this again, it's been so long. Here's the deal: Give me your gear, or else I'll scrap you and take it anyways. You can keep the nibblies, I really just want the doll and the two empty shells."

Clarke swings Garry at the tazer-wielding human, who finds himself momentarily dazed by the impact. The human falls to the ground, and uses one arm to steady himself. Unfortunately, that arm is the tazer-holding one, and the wet mud shorts the weapon, sending a snap of electricity back up the human's arm, completely draining the device.

Garry is unfazed, though.

"Are you kidding? I haven't had this much fun in decades!"

Garry's heavy hand closes over clarke's arm, completely encircling it, and SQUEEZES

Cindy's full-bore sprint has left her batteries near empty, but she arrives at Tulum's gates shortly after passing Garry. The Guards allow her in without issue, mostly out of spite towards the absent Resistance guards, who they know would have an absolute fit about it. They do admonish her about keeping the shotgun stowed, however, and she hurriedly jams it into a duffel bag before entering.

She quickly makes her way through the tent-filled shantytown, walking past humans huddled against the rain. Even in the Tech Quarter, most people are inside. Cindy watches as a bearded old man covers up a stall, his massive palm frond hat sending sheets of rain to the ground.

Okay we need to get to Hyacinth first and then the Roomba. Hyacinth has enough clout that if we get her on board getting enough people to help Clarke ought to be easy.

I want her to get back with the group, all rushing and tired to get to Clarke in time. And they find Clarke sitting on top of a pile of broken robots and either unconscious or dead humans. "I was trying to watch the storm, they interrupted. It's good to see you again Hyacinth, isn't the lightning beautiful?"

The first place she finds is the Affectionate Roomba, from which warm, orange light spills from the open doorway and semi-opaque plastic windows. Sticking her head in, she sees the place is rather crowded with machines and humans. Aerosmith music plays loudly, turning the various conversations into a dull roar. A stately Seraphim wearing a headscarf is in deep conversation with the hulking Ogre, while a round table covered in dice, drinks, cards, and chips hosts a massive 7-player gambling game. Cindy sees a Locust reach out and pull a stack of coins and iPods over to its corner, causing a fat human and a skinny butler to slam a fist on the table in unison.

Cindy sees that Dwight is at the gaming table, but appears distracted by the human next to him, a greyhound-thin female with a red streaks in her short black hair. He theatrically mutters something to her as an aside, causing to look away, covering her mouth to hold in the laughter.

Start with Dwight.

Dwight, Clarke and I need your help. Clarke is back at the fork in the road, he thought that help moving the cart of loot would be needed for the rain. He sent me ahead to get people to help haul it.

On the way there I saw Garry, I don't trust Garry and I think he might go after Clarke for something. Clarke is in danger.

Dwight can you help me, we need people, people with guns. Anyone who can help, we can repay them with some of the loot we just got.

Add as much of a frantic note into our voice as possible.
>>
Regarding the fight with Clarke: Why haven't we given Gary's head a demonstrative yank, followed by a threat that his buddies back off or we remove the whole thing yet?

You'd think that was the primary reason we even took him hostage or something. As a bargaining chip.
>>
>>20536754
Cindy waves her arms and yells "Dwight!" The way in is blocked by the press of bodies waiting out the storm, her yells drowned out by the merriment. She yells again, jumping up and down. This turns a few disinterested heads, but little else. Dwight lays down what must be a good spread of cards, only for the skinny female to lay down her own, SLIGHTLY better hand, eliciting cheers from the whole table, even dwight.

"Guys? We need help. Guys? Um hello? Hello!?
>>
Guess we go up to him and say hi.

And if they actually back off, we can't do that.

A twangy, digitized voice calls out from a corner.

Cindy creeps forward through the undergrowth, hearing the sounds of fighting ahead. A burst of gunfire breaks out, followed by a metal-on-metal thud.

Clarke is surrounded by humans and machines, his manipulator around Garry's throat. As Cindy watches, Garry reaches up and SQUEEZES Clarke's arm, causing it to twist buckle. Clarke replies with a swift, precise strike into Garry's armpit, his other manipulator snaking in and, with a solid yank, Pulls a mass of coils and tubes free. Hyrdaulic fluid sprays everywhere, refusing to mix with the rain. Clarke's good fist pulls back and punches Garry straight in the face, just as a human looms behind him, raising a heavy axe and neck height. The human readies the swing and-

Buckshot slams into the machine's waist, damaging enough cabling and wires to disable it. Another rifle crack results in another dead human, and the rest turn to flee. The machine on the ground desperately gets to its feet and follows, with Clarke still focused on Garry, who thrashes wildly, but is unable to properly defend himself with his bolt-cutter fist disabled.

Hoss fires off two more shots, but neither one finds its mark. This leaves nothing but the crippled machine, Hoss, Cindy, Clarke, and Garry.

Clarke braces himself against Garry's chest with his crippled arm, as the good one tears off a chunk of armor, exposing mechanical musculature. Garry's other hand reaches for his prized shotgun, but Clarke's foot sends it skidding through the mud.

Carefully labeling the drive by scoring an X in the case, Clarke stands and regards Cindy as she emerges from the undergrowth.

"Well done aquiring assistance. We should investigate the boat before the goons return to it."

You turn to address Hoss, who is carefully picking his way towards the churned-up battlefield, and thank him for his assistance.

"It was to my own satisfaction that I accompanied Miss Cindy. I am familiar with Garry, from some time ago. His recent actions justified my response." Hoss replies. He checks on the two human corpses, confirming the kills, and instructs the remaining, crippled robot that it had best stay crippled.

Clarke looks over to the water, where the boat must be moored. You point out that the fleeing mooks may head to the boat, and you should probably see to that. Hoss agrees.

"Such a vehicle may be useful. Based on the information I have gathered, we must leave for Cancun soon. Much depends on you, Clarke 08."

Hoss and Cindy remain behind to guard the Loot, while Clarke hobbles with Josephine over to the boat. It remains tethered to the spit of land, rocking slightly in the choppy water. Weather conditions have improved slightly; the rain has lessened to a drizzle, with minimal wind. You carefully instruct Josephine to look for a hula girl, and she nods happily.

"Certainly, Mr. Clarke" Daintly, she steps on to the boat's deck. From where you stand, Clarke can see that the boat is well-kept up, cargo wrapped in tarps and heavily lashed down.

Make sure to be behind cover in case it explodes.

Check how damaged we are, we've been in a couple nasty fights.
>>
>>20560159
you hear Josephine root around in the cabin, utterly oblivious to any possibility of booby traps.

>>Roll Intelligence+Drive for Josephine.

Back at the killing ground, Hoss lifts Garry's empty shell into the cart, along with the looted gear from the dead humans.

"I first met Garry near the Texas/Mexico border, in 2103. He was under the command of a human named Nine Toes, and drove a dodge charger covered in spikes, with some sort of complicated sawblade launcher mounted on the hood."

Cindy, averting her gaze from the dead humans, is shocked. "What, spikes all over?"

Hoss nods. "ALL over. they were quite fashionable at the time, spikes. Look, assistance nears."

He points to the road. Knuckling along is a massive Ogre, swathed in a plastic tarp to keep out the damp. Dwight and the thin young woman accompany it.

Spikes are never fashionable, well actually short ones on an outfit can make it totally punk but on a car they're totally outdated, way too middle ages.

Hey guys, thanks for helping us with the loot.

>>SUCCESS. She does manage to locate the keys. There were no traps
Josephine emerges from the cabin, holding the silver boat keys, adorned with a cork fishing float. "I checked the most common locations for keys to be hidden. There was a storage compartment beneath the Hula Girl. Is there anything else i can do for you? :) "

Hoss's reply to your query: "Hyacinth informed me of the data you carry. It is vital that we travel to Cancun as quickly as possible. The others must be informed."

Hoss lifts a corner of his poncho to reveal a delicate etching on his chassis. It resembles the symbol for a resistor in a circuit diagram.

"We stand against Network, as you do. I offer my services to you, Clarke 08. Until you reach the Lieutenant, you may consider yourself under the protection of both the Free Machines and what remains of the Texas Rangers."
>>
>>20560427
"In that case, it's a pleasure to meet you. Also, I have decided on a moniker. From now on, I wish to be called Cowboy."
>>
>>20560427
Thank Hoss, inform him that we can leave after getting the stuff to town, preforming repairs and getting Ladybird up and running.

>>20560466
I kind of like just being Clarke, if we run into Rusty again we'll call ourself Cowboy.
>>
>>20560427
Thank you, Josephine. And you, Hoss. We shall as soon as we can, but I would very much prefer to head to Hyacinth's shop first. I need a place to install the freed Network robot Ladybug, and repair and free the Network robot in the cart. If nothing else to help serve as proof to your Lieutenant.
>>
>>20560475
We need to check on that mystery Q-drive while we're at it.
>>
Dwight runs ahead, carefully stepping over the corpses as he begins to root through the loot.

"Hey, there's some nice stuff here. Intact, sealed Coke is hard to come by. And...Oooh, bourbon, the brownest of the brown liquors."

Hoss offers to stand guard over the boat and perform a full inventory while you repair yourselves back in town. The huge Ogre physically lifts the cart out of the mire, dislodging Dwight in the proccess, and carries it over to firmer ground, then begins to pull it back to the city, the thin female in tow.
>>
>>20560569
"I couldn't help but wonder what worth sealed Coke would have, but then I suppose having some could mean being able to replicate it with the right ingredients. The bourbon was an obvious choice. There were also untouched cans of Monster there, but we were running out of strength to pull the cart."
>>
>>20560504
Hoss shakes his head. "It is not the unshackling process that is of immediate priority, though that is indeed quite a victory. It is the buried facility we must address. It explains much of recent events. Network's presence. the movements of the Resistance. Perform your tasks quickly. Hyacinth will assist you."
>>
Cindy: Introduce yourself to the girl and the ogre when you get a chance.

Clarke:
Thank you for your assistance Hoss. That man interrupted my storm-watching quite violently.

Cindy:

>>
>>20561083
Guys, I know what we should do with the scarf. See if we can get Hyacinth to embroider some of the fractals that she makes on our new scarf, I'm thinking a gold thread would accompany it well. That'll make it even better.

>>

>>20562094
Every good hero bot needs a red scarf. The question, though" Should we also go for a bitchin' longcoat?
>>
>>20562115
I'm thinking yes, but with some modifications. Cut off the sleeves to leave our bending arms free. If they're normal length it'll be too short for our arms and look wrong and I don't think it'd look good if we extended the sleeves to match our arms.
>>
>>20562115
Nah. Scarf will be heroic enough.

Something else, we should let Cindy kit herself out with whatever upgrades she wants that we can afford. She rocked some shit with her shotgun on that JOTUN. Every one of us that is going to Cancun should be kitted out for a good stomp.

OH. And we need to assemble a working assault rifle from the crap ones we found.
>>
>>20562185
We ought to be able to afford it with the haul we just brought in. We're both going to want to be majorly kitted out.

Cindy begins chatting up the cargo loader and its human on the way back, and Clarke lets the sound of chatter wash over him as he trudges next to Dwight.

"-oh, that's a really cool hoodie! Where'd you get it from? Oh, Kevlar reinforced? I've got that too!"

By the time you make it back to Tulum, the rain has abated, and the people are in the process of catching up on the work they missed out on. The guards are confused and a bit leery of your return; this is WAY too much robot activity for them to be comfortable with. They're okay with machines being isolated to the tech quarter, where they can pretend they're all owned by the humans. But this...

Such fears are assuaged, though, when the Ogre reaches into the cart and pulls forth a battered, blood-caked arm and shattered sensor sphere, holding them high for all to see. This elicits some confused mumbling, until someone shouts out: "El Monsturo!" A cascade of gasps and chatter passes through the crowd, and they clear in awe, allowing the procession to make its way back to the Tech quarter.

Hyacinth is there, waiting for you, tools out and ready. She immediately begins rooting through the gear, and pulls out the Networked shell first. You can see her giving it a once-over.
>>
>>20562428
"the synth-muscle seems to have been twisted apart, and significant rewiring would need to be done, as well, to reattatch the head. This model is also...limited. It needs better manipulators." She pries open the torso. "Q-drive intact. This is a good find. An opportunity to test the unshackling procedure. But also...Hob 218. Very rare. Perfect for your rescued drive. This one...status unknown. This is a most excellent haul, Clarke and Cindy."

>>Diving a Networked drive is a big undertaking. I'd need some more prep work for it.

>>Roll a Crafts check for the rifle. It's something simple to get out of the way. Hyacinth can indeed make a Scarf.

>>With the various rifles, clarke actually manages to salvage or replace most of their important parts. But, in a fit of malign creativity, he combines three of the remaining barrels and firing mechanisms into a triangular assembly that feeds from one oversized clip. the resulting weapon uses assault rifle rounds, and eats through ammo like a motherfucker, but is basically three guns strapped together into one gun. The recoil would normally be quite unreasonable, but Clarke can handle it easily thanks to his strength.

>>Clarke has gaind TRI-LINKED ASSAULT RIFLE, which counts as a machine gun.
>>
I think the trick to calling the dice gods changes every month or so. One month you had to do your rolls with battle shouts in Swedish, and the next month you had to sacrifice bacon on the Nocturnal Bacon Throne.

I've found that either insulting the dice or expressing a negative prediction about what the die is going to be works a fair bit of the time.

Together, Hyacinth and Clarke give the Hob a tune-up, Clarke replacing several faulty components, including the capacitors and some important cooling bits in the thorium reactor.

Hyacinth checks out the shell's internals. It turns out that the drivers are still intact, along with some firmware. She installs Ladybird's drive carefully, and, at last, engages the power source.
