Walking side by side with Kharn, a good solid rifle in your hands and nothing to wait for but tomorrow - it's a quite refreshing experience, revitalizing almost. Perhaps this is why vacations to remote parts of the world are so popular these days - to really relax, to really disconnect from stress is to be placed in a radically-different environment; totally alien from your usual trappings. Not that you'd recommend a trip to Siberia to hunt bears for anybody else, but for someone like you, this seems to be what just the doctor ordered.

You're not even jonesing for the booze as much as you were, earlier. Hell, you haven't even lit a single cigarette since this started!

An almost happy sigh leaves your lips; and you breathe in the chilly, bracing air as you continue to follow the large tracked vehicle rumbling in front of you. You blink at this. It seems that Kharn is sharing something about the past that you don't remember, and while it sounds positive for the most part, the small amount that her smile had faded seems to signify that it wasn't all...peaches and cream, back then.

I've realised something.
In the anime, Homura was never shown drinking and smoking.
I know the drinking and smoking as added as part of the noir theme, but there is one line that got me thinking.

Some more speculation:

So far, we've been assuming that Homura (before she got kali-mah'd by Faust) was a good guy. However, the diary entries seem to imply that she was, at the very least, paranoid. And from what I can piece together from what other people have said, there is an actual continuity where Homura kills off Madoka for power.

Perhaps we should take what the diary entries say with a grain of salt? Homura may have been a magical girl of a very 'Practical' nature. Pic related.

Well, I've also been thinking. It keeps being implied that this state of affairs is our, for at least Homura's, fault.

I think that this occurs post anime where Homura unsatisfied with the world that Madoka's sacrifice found tried a way of undoing it.
She somehow got Godoka to create an alternate universe, however the strain of creating a universe was too much even for Godoka. Since the new universe still had the default:

Clearly, these are perfectly ordinary Bears. Also, the Truck will be fine - if it wouldn't hold up to the Bear's aggression, they wouldn't have brought it. We should ask about what R&D has been working on - it can only help us.

Maybe it would be a good idea to see if we can get Midori in the shield. We should wrap her soul gem in something first, so it doesn't bump against anything. The weapons dealer should have an idea.

Also, we should totally trust Kharne, without reservation.

Putting soul gems in the shield could probably totally cheat the system somehow, especially if you went back in time and started making copies of soul gems.

Well, for one, i think we were keeping Midori's soulgem in the Inventory while she was still The Enemy. Since she hasn't come to us with recurring nightmares of dark, cold, endless fields of guns, i'm going to guess that soulgems don't retain independent memory.

Next, i think trying to cram ourself into our own shield is probably a div/0 error, and at best will render us comatose until someone manages to figure out how to work the shield and gets the soulgem out of it.

Misaka needs to go back to base. She's excellent sniper support, but in this environment, without a rifle she's just a target. Midori is too emotionally invested for us to bring her along, no matter what call we end up making.

Look her in the eyes "Trust your sempai. I'll put her down if necessary, but it's possible to bring her in alive, I'll do it. As your friend I promise this."

Why not turn her into Rin?

This is Noir, and if my Noir reading has told me anything, it's that fights can go one sided on a dime.

We probably should hightail it back to Base. Lots of firepower back there and it'll lead backing to our words. She'll be less likely to hurt ANY of us, Midori, Kharn, Misaka, whoever.

If we can't do that, for, say, too far away, or the secret should remain a secret, then we better prepare. She seems to be hankering for death, and is using her sword, which Midori told us is when she's angry. We should attempt to calm her down first, using Midori, who should be covered. She shouldn't be allowed to do anything unnecessary and dangerous beyond the expected.

If everything goes pear shaped, we need to keep Midori from dying and keep this PM and her bear mafia at bay.

I don't know they could both be helpful, we just need to give Misaka the right hardware and set her up in a good overwatch position. And Midori might be able to lock down this girl with her Nightmare mode enough for a non-lethal take down, leaving the bears to us and Kharn. Besides it would be good tactical practice as Warmaster cause this will be the kind of group tactics expected of us.

You let out a sigh as you shift your right arm slightly so as to get a good look at your Shield. It's clicking a bit erratically, but other than that it's still its battle-damaged self, and the cold is making frost form on its rim.

You play with the idea of racking it an entire 180 degrees, initiating your Time Stop and making Pinky materialize out here, in the wilderness - before hauling off and slapping her in the face. Chastising her for daring to interrupt your hunting trip, something you desperately needed to unwind with. How can you pick up after her if she forces you to remain an overworked and overwound Magical Girl? Who does she expect to collect her golden crap? Midori? Or maybe Sayaka? Whoever's just the teensiest bit crazier than you?

You smile slightly as you play with the idea, and nothing more. Of course, that's crazy. That's suicide. For all her honeyed words and murmured declarations of love, she's all but admitted that your dreams involving her have come true. And you know she'll do it again the moment you let her.

It's as predictable Incubator behavior as it can get, really. Incubators are, after all, notoriously jealous creatures - if it finds out that a Magical Girl under its employ had gone rogue or went to the other side, it will immediately deploy resources in order to destroy that traitorous Magical Girl. No matter where she was. And the method of execution would be personal - through another Magical Girl, hopefully someone who at least is involved with the traitor at one point or another.

Kirika had been proof enough of that.

Midori nods after a moment. "I...I accept that, Sempai. R-really, I do." She seems to hesitate for a split second, before nodding fiercely, a set expression in her face as she looks back at your eyes. She draws in a shuddering breath, and lets it out just as shakily.

"A-and as attractive a prospect it is for me to just hide from it, I...I have to be there. If we're going to have to kill Mirai-san, sempai, then I want to be there to say goodbye and...and take responsibility." She nods again.

You stare at her for a moment, before nodding. She's...she certainly seems to be adjusting to this sort of thing very well. A bit too easily, for someone who'd just been told that they'd have to watch their best friend die, but then again, Midori's shown a rather strong sense of pragmatism, even with her...strange fantasies. If anything, she was able to seperate her work from her life, and that was a good sign.
