Who's ready for the next round?

Last time, on CG, our tribe's Chief won a duel against the ferocious Heart Eater, and assimilated the camp of warriors and camp followers into our own village.

He also masterfully dealt with someone who was a big naysayer and wanting to cause issues.

Our village just figured out that if we plant the seeds from berries and fruits, we can grow them! But first, we need to make a nice place to grow these things.

Most of the strong men and women of the village start to work. They pick a nice spot, in the southern region of the village, right outside it. They build it along the river, so as to make watering the plants easier.

They also begin harvesting lumber, so that they can put a palisade around it, to keep animals from getting drawn in and running off with their food.

Some men depart the village with a wagon, towards the hills. Though they lack the means to pull the hemtatite free from the cave walls, their is plenty of loose lumps of the stuff in a cave that can be harvested.

The warriors train themselves to be stronger in mind and will, and to work better as a team.

I'm sorry, I don't believe it was.

An event has occurred!

Lately, the howls of wolves have kept many of the villagers up. The night guards are on edge, claiming to have seen large animals off in the distance.

They haven't done anything to hurt the tribe yet, but people are uneasy. What should be done?

A) The Chief leads a hunting party to search and destroy the wolves
B) The Chief orders hunters to go and do it
C) Attempt to kill any adult wolves, but try and domesticate the pups (Has a 60% chance of failure)

Back at last. FUCK ME SIDEWAYS, crewing for larp is knackering. Right, where are we?

Well we need a field anyway, so better now than later. However WHY THE FLYING SHITCAKES don't we have GRAIN yet?! Barley, wheat, corn, I don't care, but we NEED that stuff to make a decent agricultureal base. Fruits just do not cut it!

You guys tried something with a 60% failure chance? Really? Yeah, that worked out great. One dead, one wounded and little to show for it.

Likewise, iron without working out copper and bronze first is going to be a bitch. Iron's actually pretty tricky to smelt and work properly. Further, why train now? That's what the winter is for!

B and C - Winter is coming, but rather than dire wolves and wights, we need to guard against starvation (actually, dire wolves MIGHT be a threat, but not one we're currently aware of). Get some hunting and fishing done, smoke it to preserve it and supplement it with gathered fruits.

J - Our new 'immigrants' are still living in yurts. Let's fix that before winter and build them some proper bloody houses.

Sorry man, it's a mob ruling. Though, if it goes for too long, I may throw the tribe a bone, and have the friendly tribe help them out with it; it'll cost them, though.

Anyways. Villagers set out to fish the river with their nets.

Some villagers leave to get in the last of the harvest-able fruits, using crude backpacks to assist them.

Over the course of the month, the yurts are replaced by wooden houses, which leads us to our event.

What do we do with the yurts? rawhide walls and ceilings are of very poor quality, and rotting; they aren't really good for anything, at this point. The wooden frames, however, could be useful.

How should we use this spare wood?
A) Reinforce the palisade with the wooden frames
B) Save the lumber
C) Who cares? Throw it out.
D) Other. Please specify.

B - Save the lumber. If we can't use it in permanent buildings, we can use it to research timber seasoning, store it for other purposes, or keep it on standby to make our OWN yurts, if we ever have to move people far from the village, like scouts. Roaming range up!

Can we not use the hides to make warm clothing for a few dedicated hunters? It is not good that we are confined to our homes for the winter, and we should at least have some sort of presence out in the wild -- particularly in this dangerous time.
>>
>>20196003
It is possible to research, and then craft, cold weather outfits. However, it will still be difficult to hunt in the winter time, meaning less food brought in. Still an increase over no food source.

Their might be another alternative food source for the Winter, but I won't mention it.
>>
>>20195973
Ahh, winter. The time to sit back, indulge in all the things you never had time to do during the rest of the year... And worry about your impending stravation, because no bugger thought grain was essential except me. (Not letting that go!)

E - We could do with some more archers. Let's finish re-training those dart throwers and recruit, say, six more from the populace. Remember, we're only using citizen levies at the moment, so they'll still have peacetime jobs.

I - Let's make some nice trade goods for when spring comes. Pots, drums and pipes, that kind of thing. The friendly village seems to like them and pottery is practical, as well as pretty. I propose paterning it by pressing corded rope into the wet clay, before firing.

G - Let's improve our language. Our current writing skills are rather limited. There's no scope there for expressing advanced ideas at all. This will make transfering knowlege and advancing in that area much quicker in the future.
>>
>>20196076
The troops train themselves. Dart Throwers decreases to zero, Archers increase to 20.

Crafters in the village begin working on simple pots of various sizes, shapes, and styles, from clay.

Our researchers begin working on ways to express more complex thoughts in a written fashion. It will take them some time before their results are known.
>>
One day, a particularly nasty blizzard descends upon the tribe. It is impossible to see beyond five feet in front of a man outside, and the winds are harsh enough to leave marks (or so it would seem).,

Everyone remains locked inside their huts, burning wood to keep themselves warm.

The chief, himself, remains in his Longhouse with the Shaman and a few warriors. Off in the distance, past the howling of the wind, the Chief is certain he hears screams.

What do we do?
A) Chief personally investigates what is happening
B) Chief sends his two guards to check it out
C) Ignore it. Probably just the wind.
D) Other. Please specify.
>>
>>20196286
D chief and warriors go check it out
>>
>>20196286
We can't brave the cold outside without protection. But at the same time, we can't ignore those screams.

D - Wrap that bearskin cloak around us tight, grab a spear and pray with the shaman for the protection of the gods, if they are willing to bless our bravery and noble spirit.
>>
>>20196286
D. Chief and a contingent of warriors.
>>
"C'mon, men. I do not like the sound that just occurred. Their may be trouble."

The Chief and his guards get dressed up in their thickest leather and warmest fur cloaks and fur lined boots.

The Shaman prays for them, being too weak to be of use. The Chief, meanwhile, as he prepares, ask for Brother Sun's aid in keeping warm against the ineffable cold.

They boldly march out into the village, where the screaming becomes more distinct. Moving carefully, they follow the screams until the heat and fire can be seen.

A hut has caught fire! The mother, father, and two children have gotten out of the hut, but are not outfitted to last long in this weather.

It is possible to save them, but the hut is a lost cause. Still, the fire has a chance to spread, and cause more damage.

No options clearly come to mind, so the Chief must think fast on his feet here. What does he do?
>>
>>20196475
Tell the family to take shelter in a nearby home
have the chief and warriors throw piles of snow onto the fire
>>
>>20196475
Send most of the warriors to kick snow on the fire and try to put it out. Send maybe three + the chief to get the family to safety.
>>
>>20196475
Start piling heaps of snow on the fire and send the family to gather all able bodied persons to come and aid us.
>>
>>20196475
What to do? Why, I'd say it's simply a case of getting as much snow as possible on that fire. There's not a lot else to do, sadly. We can't organise the village to respond in this weather, after all. Hopefully, the blizzard should work in our favour.
>>
The fire seems strong, despite the conditions; and the winds seem to threaten to spread it, more than extinguish it.

Still, the Chief is quick to act. He personally ushers the family back to the longhouse, where they can stay for the rest of the cold season. Their is more than enough space, after all, and once it is warmer, it will be trivial to rebuild.

The men gather snow with their bare hands, despite how much it hurts, and toss it in huge lumps onto the flaming house. They are able to extinguish it, eventually, though they do suffer some injuries.

Luckily, perhaps due to divine intervention--or mayhaps simply because of the strength and constitution of our villagers-- nobody suffers frostbite, though it had certainly been possible.

Though it was hectic, this crisis is averted without loss of life or limb; just the house and its few shabby furnishings.

Exactly so.

It is cold and frigid out. Large amounts of snow outside the village prohibit leaving it.

Food stocks are starting to lower, but remain at a decent level. Our wise men believe it shall last through the cold moons.

Our craftsmen have produced some fine pots (+20 clay pots). They have run out of clay.

Our researchers have figured out how to express complex thought in a written form. They begin disseminating this information throughout the village.

What do we do? Pick three:

A) It is too cold to explore.
B) It is too cold to hunt or fish.
C) It is too cold to forage fruits.
D) It is too cold and their is too much snow to acquire any resources.
E) Train some men as warrior (no more archers, due to lack of equipment)

J ) Village wide mating season, to prepare more babies and have our village grow
>>
>>20195973
Ho-hum, not much to do in winter is there? Two questions, mechanics-wise, by the way, GM?

First, are random events every turn a good idea? They seem to slow down the pace of the game somewhat, not to mention not seeming very 'random'. Perhaps some gaps between them, of a turn or two might be better.

Second, I never recieved an answer as to whether or not cultural and scientific advance would increase the caps for our various stats. Is this going to be the case?
>>
>>20196775
Just thought of another reason for the mating season: It would obviously boost morale
>>
>>20196732
On to the actions then!

F - Some more skill never went amiss! Discipline hasn't really come into play yet. I think we should focus on our strength, given our weakness at the moment really isn't too bad, just 'average'.

J - Improve the carts by replacing their stone wheels with wooden ones.

I - Craft some more luxury goods. Next year is time to really start trading. Some high-quality musical instruments would be good. I'd propse obsidial jewlery, but we're currently a litle short on it, aren't we?
>>
>>20196823
To the first bit: I like doing the random event every turn. If it's not to the group's liking, though, I may devise another method; maybe die rolls on a chart?

Second bit: I apologize, I thought I had answered that. Either way, I will answer it now: yes, it will. Certain buildings will help, too; for instance, we currently do not have a granary (I figure all the food gets stored up in the Longhouse somewhere), which would allow us to hold onto more food (since we have a dedicated storage site for it).

That is science-based, of course, but it is also something that will need to be constructed, once we figure it out.
>>
>>20196859
Currently, we have no clay, and a little obsidian. I am keeping track of those on paper at the moment, but I can work something into the status post, if anybody would like that (though it is getting quite large).

Also, mechanics wise, I am thinking of something: At the beginning of each year, clan deaths (form sickness/old age/natural causes) and births. I mean, realistically, a kid might be born every other week, but it just seems like a lot of unnecessary work to constantly fluctuate the number.

Thoughts and opinions, gentlefolk?

No call for random die rolls, simply sometimes give us a turn of breathing room. It needn't be anything spectacular. Besides, this lets you lavish more attention to detail on our actions. They may not be impressive and flashy, but they're what build an empire.

>>20196904
You mean our clan numbers only fluctuate at the beginning of a year? Seems fair to me. If you can list the total, adults and children and elders in three separate sections, like so, it'd help us keep track of it too:
EXAMPLE:
Population: 117 (Adults 87; Children and Elders 30)
>>
Though it is cold out, it helps toughen our warriors up. They train diligently, and each man is easily able to fell two or three lesser men on their own.

Some of the crafters begin to work on wood, producing flute. Others begin to craft wooden wheels, which will be better than the stone ones.

The adults of the village gather together, one evening, in the temple. Though large, it is still barren of accoutrement, however, this does not seem to bother anyone.

Their is a feast of sorts, in honor of Mother Earth. The birther of them all, and a goddess of fertility and sex in her own right, the evening will see many pregnancies.

Tell that to V

The food supplies are low, and while Winter will not last much longer, it is somewhat worrying to the villagers.

The days are getting longer, and already, they seem a bit warmer. Soon, the snow will retreat.

Their is no clay in the village. Their is very little obsidian.

All of our villagers are literate, and understand a basic written/spoken language.

H - A winter solstice party! Just the ticket to raise morale. We're past the worst of it, so let's remind the people that the spring is just around the corner. For a good festival, of course, we will need...

I - Berry liqour! It was never said what the berries WERE, but I'm going to arbitrarily say blackberries. We'll turn some of our stock into booze, partly to drink, partly to trade!

G - We have some hematite... Might as well look into metalworking. I REALLY don't hold out much hope though, without more basic techniques mastered first.

>>
>>20197205
V, we already HAVE knowlege of food preservation. Heck, we have a dedicated smoke house we built ages ago!

Further, why are we building pasture? It's useless, as we've found no animals to domesticate, outside our wolves!

And a granary and farm is of little use, as we don't have any gods-damn grain crops yet! That's priority one in the spring; scouts for grain (and hopefully copper), as well as hunters and fishers to recover our food levels. It'll be too early in the year for apples and berries!
>>
>>20197205
Pasture will be nice, but will also require that we find animals to herd there.

Hmm, it's just you two, and their's no agreeance, but I will try to do my best to fuse the two requests.

Some of the craftsmen spend some time crushing up the berries, which undergo some mild fermentation due to wild yeast on the skin, and some other factors (I know jack all about it). researching proper brewing techniques would have better results, but we have made 7 clay jars worth of berry liquor.

Our researchers study alternative methods to preserve food. It goes slowly.

Enough snow has melted, and it is warm enough (though not truly warm) for our lumberjacks to go out and fell some trees, bringing in a small amount of lumber.
>>
>>20197327
Their's other ways to preserve, though. Jams, jellies, preserves, marmalades, etc, for instance, last longer than the whole, unpreserved fruit.

The snows have melted and receded, and once again, the green grass is visible.

Two of our elderly did not live to see the thaw.

We have an absolute lack of clay. We have very little obsidian.

Our food supplies are in need of serious replenishment.

We can perform three of the following this month:

A) Send some men to explore. (specify location)
B) Send hunters to hunt game, and fishermen to fish.
C) It is too early in the year to gather fruit.
D) Acquire resources (specify one)
E) Train some men as warriors.

You can smoke any flesh, including fruit and vegetales.

Get some pine needles and boil them in water. It makes a citrus-y tea. We can use that to suppliment our food until the snow thaws.

Finally, someone else who realises how difficult it is to forge iron, let alone iron of any kind of quality! We really need to practice with copper and bronze first. We can't just dive in at the deep end and expect to swim!

>>20197508
You can? News to me. Never heard of a smoked apple in my life! Well, you learn something every day, I guess.

>>20197473
A - We still know next to shit all about the land south of the village. Let's send some scouts out there to take a look for anything useful, as well as to get the lay of the land.

B - Good gods, get us som food, fast!

H - Morale is dashed low. I think it's time for our first anual flower-viewing festival, to celebrate the first blossoms of sping by drinking far to much and having a high old time. The last thing we want is for the natives to get restless, so to speak.
>>
Our first priority is food. Fishing should be more reliable then hunting.

I'm a bit worried over our obsidian supply. Until we have some kind of metal, obsidian is key to making effective weapons.
>>
>>20197577
We have enough weapons for now. What we really need obsidian for is tools. We'll deal with that next turn though.

Also, WOW, my spelling has gone to shit. I guess I'm more tired than I thought.
>>
>>20197566
We ARE the natives and I can't remember us ever being restful.

Your right about moral though. As soon as the food comes in we should throw a banquet.
>>
>>20197608
I think the food cost of the festivities is part of the normal consumption. Either that, or it comes out of our income. What's important is the excuse for everyone to drink a lot and wake up the next day with good memories and sore heads.

D'awww, thanks guy! Makes me feel all special and loved!

If I seem like a wet blanket at times, guys, it's only because I don't like going off half-cocked. Logistics and organisation are the building blocks of a great civilization and I have learned that relying on luck is only going to kick you in the sack eventually. Make your own 'luck' however and you'll have a much easier time of it.

I'd like to add my thanks and praise to the pile too, by the way, OP. I haven't found a quest thread that's caught my attention like this in a while! The only downside is that I'm rather afraid to leave for even a single day, for fear it'll all go horribly wrong! There goes the rest of my social life!
>>
>>20197653
I'll keep at it, for as long as I've got people willing to play, and willing to let me do it. I must admit, I'm having a hell of a time, too. This is the first time I've ever done more than participate in a quest thread.

So, now that I, myself, have eaten, let's see... scouting seems like a good thing tog et done this time (I hate to be pushy, but we can't really grow by soaking up all the resources in this one area), and getting food is a necessity.

For the festival/feast/banquet idea, would you guys want it to be more so just drinking and eating, or put in some religious overtones? Thanks to the deities, offerings to them, etvc, in addition to the feasting/drinking?
>>
>>20197805
Hahaha. Thank you, too. Well, a few days out of this week and next, I may not be able to run it, do to other obligations, so you'll have a brief respite coming up.
>>
>>20197833
I really do want to expand our pantheon eventually. But yeah, an offering to the Earth Mother at the flower viewing would be very appropriate. Well, all the gods deserve a drink with us, but the Earth Mother most of all, I'd say. Spring is her time, after all.

Let's not ask for anything this year; with no farming tradition, asking for good crops seems like something that'd never occur to the clan. Instead, we'll just offer our thanks and praise.

And hey, even if our new immigrants aren't fond of all our ways, they'll hardly object to a party, eh?
>>
>>20197887
Honestly, our best bet would be to remove the religion slowly so that it doesn't interfere with our scientific progress in the future. I can almost guarantee if this game goes on long enough, we'll have our own dark ages due to religion
>>
Hunters depart from the village, taking a cart with them.

Scouts head south with the attack wolves to see what lies out there.

In the bare temple, the villagers gather together. They celebrate their survival of a harsh winter with copious amounts of food, and liquor as well.

They give thanks to their deities;and the minor blessings they have received this past year.

A lot of liquor is consumed, and offered (-5 jars of liquor).

An event occurs!
>>
While scouting around for things, the scouts find this strange area. it is flat land, similar to the area their village is built on, with sparse trees, and no sign of animals.

Strangely, though, they have discovered, every now and again, these strange things growing out of the ground. They do not appear to be flowers of any sort, or trees or anything they have ever seen before.

What does the head scout decide to do?

A) Leave the strange things alone, and report about them
B) leave the strange things alone, and don't mention them
C) Try to dig them up, and see what they are
D) Dig them up, and bring them back for examination
E) Other. Please specify.
>>
>>20198012
But apparently gods really exist here. So not worshiping them would be not too smart.
>>
>>20198012
On the contrary, sir! Not all religon is adverse to scientific and technological advance and to simply dismiss all tradition that way out of hand is a rather surprisingly narrow veiw, from a man who clearly likes to consider himself enlightened.

Besides, I always intended to model our religion more on eastern belief and philosophy, focusing on self-discovery and introspection, finding one's place in the world, as well as worship of a myriad of different gods, much like the Shinto faith. None of these tradtions in the real world have any histroy of stifling progress.

Sadly, now i have to go to bed. I am dog-tired from larping today and simply cannot stay up any longer. My limbs feel like lead and my head is nodding. Good night all! I shall see you tomorrow, I take it? Same bat-time, same bat-channel?

The scouts spend quite a bit of time digging. They are able to recover a full dozen each of two different types of strange things.

In both cases, the green sprouts lead to a strange root of some sort, red in color. One of these is perfectly round, with roots coming out of it. Its outer shell seems somewhat flaky.

The other one has small roots and sprouts coming off of it, and is oddly shaped, like a formless lump.

The scouts bring these items back, where, hopefully, the Researcher's will figure out what they are.

Leave most of the potatos and bring some back for testing (potatos contain a mild poison). Also, figure out how to plant and grow these things and when is the best time to harvest.

Our food is still low so we need to send folks out to hunt, fish, and gather.

Martial dicipline will have to wait.
>>
Yet another cultural event. Do you guys have any vague ideas for me to work with? Should it be religious, or more... something else. Contests of strength? Just taking a day off and relaxing?

Some men leave the village to go hunting. They take a wooden cart with them to help carry animals back. Fishermen don't need one, since they fish right inside and by the village.

Scouts depart to the west, and to the south. Between the two groups, they take all of the attack/defense wolves, to aid them.
>>
>>20198451
A contest of strength would be good as we could decide who would lead our army in times of war.
>>
>>20198451
Streangth contest indeed. Though there should be one for men AND one for females. We need to know which people will need to breed in the future, and which ones to prevent from breeding.
>>
>>20198544
Oh god. Time for /pol/ civ 2.0. They had eugenics within the first thread
>>
>>20198567
Haha, well, it might end up being what makes us stronger than some other village. And with our people presumably relying on potatoes and onions during the coming winters, our weak will die out anyway due to malnutrition.
>>
A festival is held for the adults of the tribe, where they are allowed to engage in various contests.

Amognst binge drinking and wrestling, their is, of note, an archery competition. One woman amongst those participating is remarkable for her ability to strike the center of the target with uncanny accuracy.

This woman is known as Farsight, for her keen perception.

The remainder of the berry liquor is consumed.

Scouts sent to the west come back with a strange chunk of colored rock. Mixed in amongst the normal rock seems to be veins of an amber colored stone that has a similar feel to hematite, but which is obviously different.

They report it was found near one of the lakes to the west.

The scouts from the south return, bearing a strange animal, which they captured in a backpack.

This animal has white feathers, and is quite small. It is also quite noisy. They have never seen anything like it before.

Hunters were barely able to bring in any meat, due to a scarcity of wild life.

Men begin the process of preparing the ground for growing, and building a palisade around it. It will take some time before this task is complete.

Our craftsmen have created a small enclosure and put the feathered creature in it, for observation.

Our researchers begin figuring out how best to utilize this strange rock they've found. They also note that getting more will be difficult without tools designed to excavate the rock from the ground.

Or maybe I should call it quits now, since I completely goofed on that. Oh well. Free research, this month only! Men fish at the village.

yeah, my ability to pay attention is waning. I think I need to end it for tonight. Thank you all for playing, I will be back tomorrow, barring catastrophes.
