You are Gerald DeFlynn. Heading to the southern edge of the continent for a job, your journey comes to a halt at a major bridge. Taking the opportunity to rest, it comes to your group's attention that something is amiss.

Following a rougue construction zoid, it is discovered that some unkown party had planted a bomb on the bridge. Short of time, and options, Audrey bravely volunteers to disable the device, and successfully detaches it from the bridge's underside, narrowly avoiding it's detonation, and nearly falling to her death in the process.

Unable to chase after the culprits, who escaped in an Ultrasaurus, you reunite with the shaken girl and continue on your way.

You awake the next morning in the town you had stopped to rest at, just short of your destination.

Some knowledgeable locals advised you to take precautions against magnetic activity, and warned you of the electrical storms that you are likely to encounter at your destination.

If your are going to make any modifications to your groups zoids, you'll have to do it before you leave in the next few hours.

>What do?
>>
>>20136509
Fuck yeah, Zoids Quest.

The Zaber and the Red Horn ought to be fine, but the Sinkers need some level of defense against the electric storms.

Go through the local mechanic and parts shops, buy the required materials and install them with Eri's help.
>>
I'll take the oppertunity to describe the new combat system I've come up with.

Stats will still function as they have, but now, each pilot stat will be represented by a dice pool.
Let's look at Gerald's stats.

Shelling 6
CRC 2
Maneuver 4
Affinity 3

This would give him a dicepool of 6 for shelling, 2 for close combat, 4 for maneuveing, and 3 affinity dice.

What this means is that he can make up to 6 ranged attacks per round, or 2 close range attacks.

Manuever dice can be set to avoid a specific enemy or attack, designated in advance, or used reflexively. It's also how you determine round order, with the one's with the highest pool acting first, and working your way down.

Affinity dice can be used at any time to improve an action, and are used in making saving throws.

Dice pools refresh every round, accept affinity dice, which recover one dice per round.

For range weapons, one or more dice can be used per attack, for improved accuracy, and in some cases, extra power.

CRC dice are used either to attack, or defend against other CRC attacks. Some weapons, like an energy shield, can be used to defend against ranged attacks.

one last new item I've added.

Armor Dice. This is assigned specifically to a zoid.

Their Armor dice pool will have to factors. The first is the number of dice. This is simply determined by their armor rating.

The second factor is the size of the dice, which is determined by the zoid's Size.
A small zoid will have their armor dice pool consist of d4 dice.

A medium sized zoid will have d6 sized dice, large will have d8, and so on.

When attacked, all these die are rolled. If at least one die matches or beat the weapon power of the attacking weapon, no damage is sustained. However, if no rolls are successful, an armor dice is lost, until the zoid is repaired.

I will eventualy work out a more detailed system, and completely rework the zoid info images to include weapon power and special traits.

For now, though, I shall leave things simple so I can focus on the story

(it's nice to be missed. I apologies for the unannounced hiatus. i figured it be best to skip posting last week, because Batman)

You rouse your comrades, and go over what you learned yesterday. When you bring up magnetic shielding, Rick pipes up.

"Already got it covered on my end, dude." he says with a smile. "I installed some shield components before I came on board."

Well, that's a pleasant surprise. Sara just shrugs. "I just got mine, so I don't have any extra work done on it. How much is it gonna cost?"

"If we install it ourselves? Not much. We got the tools, it's just a matter of getting the material we need. I'll make a call to see what it'll take."

You call Eri again, and she informs you what the required material will be. You are looking for magnite infused lead plates, and some insulated sealant.

The sealant is easy enough to find, but it's over an hour before you get a hold of a merchant with the plates. They're pricy, 80 credit's a piece. Sara is kind enough to pay for them herself, since it's for her own zoid.

You make your way back to the Gustav, and Eri walks you through the process.

["Okay, now heat the plates with the torch, and shape them to fit around the engine turbine."] she says over the speaker. ["Once they've cooled a bit, secure them to each engine and use a hammer to mold it tightly, then secure it with a clasp and tight it further, applying the sealant around the edges."]

>cont
>>
>>20137123
The procedure is surprisingly simple, and with your steady hands, and Sara and Rick's assistance, your finish work on both engines within and hour. Rick goes over the state of his engines, and with some reapplication of some sealant, she deems them satisfactory.

["Just make sure your pulse guards are operational, and you should all be fine."] the mechanic assures. You thank her, and she wishes you luck before ending the transmission.

"What now, G-man?" Rick says. You look up at the sun. It's roughly noon right now.

>What do?
>>
>>20137181
Now we do what we came here to do. We head out into the Wild Lands, explore them, catalog them a bit, make sure there isn't anything nasty hiding there.

I figure we ought to bring some picnic baskets along with us, have a nice picnic as well, there ought to be some beautiful sights around.
>>
>>20137225
You get some food together, and mount up. Your destination is the outpost just north of the designated area, and from there you will plan your course of action in the investigation.

Rick seems in good spirits. Sara's grumbling to herself. Audrey remains fairly quiet.

>Talk(who?)
>Keep quiet till destination is reached.
>>
>>20137337
Let Sara grumble for now, I think Rick's infectious joy will smack her out of her funk.

Talk to Audrey. Tell her that everything ought to be fine, that we're going to have an amazing picnic overlooking some beautiful untamed wilderness. The Wild Lands aren't anything to be afraid of, once you get used to them they're actually rather nice.

You switch on a direct channel.
"Audrey?"

["Yes?"] the girl answers.

"How you feelin'?"

["Better."] she admits. ["I had some nightmares, but Sara helped me get back to sleep."]

You smile a bit. "Where we're going can be treacherous, but it can have its charms. Something about untamed wilderness just makes your spirits soar. And you never know, you might find something amazing hidden out there."

Audrey laughs. ["You're always so enthusiastic, Gerald."]

After some brief smalltalk, you make out the outpost in the distance, and hurry towards it as best your Gustav can.

The man at the desk goes over your identification and job missive.
"Going out sand skimming, eh?" he says in a disinterested tone. "Might want to leave your Gustav, if you stumble on a pitfall you might get trapped."

He gives some forms on his screen some input, and sends you on your way.

You are currently close to the Northeastern corner of the exploration zone. How would you like to proceed?

He has a good point about the Gustav, leave it somewhere safe and secure for now. Then head out, Us in the lead as we're the best with Electric storms and we know this type of area the best, Audrey behind us and the Sinkers scouting up ahead and to the sides, but not too far away.

Bit busy with a RL game atm, but I just read those over and it seems like a nice improvement over the old system! I personally love dice pools, so I'm very much in favor of this change.

I expect it will be slow for a while until more people notice the thread/finish catching up.

Anyway, as long as the sinker is working without problems let Rick take the lead with the Zaber and Redhorn a bit back but close enough to provide assistance if it's needed. I don't think Audrey will want to get to far from us and we are the slowest of the group.

You park the Gustav next to the outpost where it won't get in their way, and mount up in the Red Horn. After one last system check, you head south to the corner of the wild lands.

["How you want to do this, DeFlynn?"] Sara says. ["Circle around while go toward the center?"]

["Like mowing a lawn?"] Rick adds.

["Shut up, Seeker."]

["Um, I think it would be better to go in a U shape and go back around the inside. We'll be outside the zone that way after we're finished, instead of the middle.']

"I appreciate your suggestion, Audrey." you say in a gentlemanly tone. "Normally you'd be right, going that way would be more efficient. But this is the wild lands. We don't know anything about this area. Rather than rushing to finish, let's take things slow so that everyone stays safe."

Audrey seems to understand, and agrees with your decision. Everyone heads south, to make the first rotation. The area is 120 square miles, and while it wouldn't normally take long to cross, your task is searching the entire area, something your expecting to take till nightfall, with the best of circumstances.

Your about 5 miles down when you get a transmission.

["This is Watcher 4, please respond."] A woman says over the radio.

"This is Gerald DeFlynn, Watcher 4. We are on an expeditionary assignment in the territory."

["Copy that. Be advised, a large concentration of electric activity is being detected far east of here. Proceed with caution."]

You catch sight of a tall zoid in the distace, likely piloted by whom is speaking. You thank her and proceed on southward, whilst updating the map on your display.

["AAAHH!"]

You snap to attention.
"Audrey! What happened?"

There's a brief silence before you get a responce. ["I-I'm okay."] she says shakily. ["I fell through a hole."]

A pitfall. Sand coverred crags that give way when weight is set on it. They often prove fatal for anyone in a small vehicle.

"Can you get out on your own?"

"Okay, we'll mark it on the map, and bring them a sample. A big one. Most of which we-*ahem-lost."

You hear a few laughs and chuckles of approval. You wait for them to link up with you, and stow the sample, divided evenly amongst you.

You make your way to the edge of the designated area, and head east. You proceed with little trouble, finding another water source and a larger patch of vegetation.

You think you'll reach the next edge smoothly, when Sara get's you attention.

["DeFlynn."] she says with a hint of urgency. ["Get over here."]

Not wasting time with questions, you hurry over to where she is. You find her Sinker hovering in place. Some distance ahead, you see something on the ground.

["Take a look at that."] Sara urges, and you focus on the object in question. The familiar shape is quickly recognizable to you, a Helcat.

It's dead. Turned pail gray, it's frame corroded. What's more, from what you can tell, it hasn't been here for long.

>What do?

>>
>>20139557
When a zoid dies, it's because its core has ceased functioning. The deprivation of energy causes a chain reaction that causes its body to rapidly corrode. Upon closer inspection, you find no marks that suggest firearms brought it down. Instead you find nicks and gashes across its body.

You circle around to find a gruesome sight. The zoid's underside seems to have been torn open, its core ripped out from the inside. You've never seen anything like.

["DeFlynn!"] Sara barks, snapping you out of your trance. ["Look. The eject-able cockpit isn't here. Whoever was piloting this is still out here somewhere."]

"It's still chasing us!"

The Helcat hopped around the dunes, as something unknown sleek form pursued it.

"Why isn't the cloak working? It didn't even pause!"

"Because everything's always your fault!"

Yes, 3 alpha strikes cost three die, and you roll 3 d10's

Your large guns will fire one shot normally. the smaller point defense guns have sustained fire per die. Sorry, I didn't have the proper material prepared this time.

Thank you for rolling a ten, Gildoler, this gives me an oppertunity to go over the new critical hit rule.

A ten is a critical on Shelling attacks. It increase weapon power by one(unless a special rule applies), and hits the specific target without fail.
Unless...

The target has Evasion dice left, and uses it to evade the critical. This cannot be done if the attack was a surprise attack. However, if the enemy is aware, they can use a die to attempt to evade your attack. They simply have to beat your Shelling score (6) for every attack you succesfully make.

You have 3 successes, but he's gonna to use all 4 of his dice from his Manuever pool for good measure.

Three successes against three successes, the wild zoid avoids your attack. But he's used up all his dice for this round.

And while you were shooting, he's decided to head strait for you. He's poised to attack.

Your allies are going to cover you, but you need to avoid this attack or else you will likely take damage.

You can React, and use either you Manuever pool to evade, or your CRC pool to guard, or even counter attack.

Don't kill it but even though it's only immobilized we should make sure it won't hit back before we drag it somewhere.

I think we should hail the Helcats, say hi to them and then drag the Wild Zoid out of here before we do anything else. We can cover some ground as we go so it won't take that much time out of our busy day.

"We're in some kind of magnetic field, we should head out before it get's stronger."

["How are we gonna take this thing with us?"] Rick ponders aloud.

You rub your chin. That's a good question. You could try dragging it out with you, or send some of the others to get the Gustav and bring it here. Or you could do something crazy like come back for it later.

Rick/Sara fetch Gustav for retrieval.

we should follow our trail back the way we came, if we're going to drag it. We don't know what's in those other areas, and we should know better than to take those kind of risks, especially while trying to drag a very valuable zoid to our transport.
>>
>>20142325
You have Rick and Sara head back to the outpost, while you attempt to drag it along some. You aren't feeling quite brave enough to secure any lines to it, so you are content to simply scoot it along with your horn acting as a hook. It growls at you as you do, making you nervous.

Audrey alternates between helping you drag it along and making a sweep of the area. Hours go by, and what feels like forever, you finally reach the patch of vegetation you all agreed to meet at. The magnetic interference has ceased, giving you a small sense of relief.

The others haven't arrived yet, likely do to the Gustav's sluggish speed. That's fine, though, he could do with a break.

You take your trusty AZ rifle, which oddly enough you can't remember the last time you fired, so it may not be that trusty. Exiting the Red Horn, you stretch your body and walk around. You take the time to examine the armor of your zoid. There's a cosmetic scratch on the flank, but essentially remains undamaged.

You entertain setting up for a meal, but decide it would be a bit unnerving to sit down and eat out here, especially when you'll want to leave as soon as possible.

You hear a roar, and you look at the source. The zoid you brought with you is acting especially agitated. You then see why. Audrey is approaching the zoid's head. On foot.

'Audrey, no! Get back!" you shout in a panic, running over to her. The lion twitches erratically, continuing to roar.
"Audrey!"

The girl holds out her hand and touches the metallic animal.
"Shh." she cues, and the beast slowly settles down.
"That's a good boy." she says sweetly. "I'm sorry we hurt you. We couldn't let you hurt those people. You'll get better."

You stand slack jawed, ad the lion does what you believe is the closest thing to purring, as Audrey continues to brush her hand across it.

You double back, and with a zigzagging pattern, chart most of the south eastern area. It's slow going with just the two of you, but you avoid any mishaps. You find more water sources and a small canyon, which you don't have the equipment to properly explore, and simply note it on the map.

As you circle back around to the western sector, a flash in the corner of your eye catches your attention. You glance north and see in the distance several flashes of lightning.

"It's closer than i thought." you muse.

["Gerald, maybe we should head back now."] Audrey says, concerned. ["That storm seems to be moving in our direction."]

You ponder for a moment. It i starting to get late, the sun set on the horizon. You haven't even charted half the territory yet. You could head back and try to finish things up tomorrow, or try to explore further.

You make the decision to head back to the outpost. You hug the area you've already charted, trying to avoid the approaching storm.
It's getting dark by the time you exit the territory. As you make your way to the out post, you receive a communication.

["Welcome back, Mr. DeFlynn."] a familiar voice greets. ["Run into any trouble out there?"]

"This and that, mam. Nothing we couldn't handle." You see the zoid the watch woman is piloting, and get a better look at it this time. An old Zatton. Though not really that tall by modern standards, it still provided the pilot with a good view. Its neck also appears to have been modified, giving it a couple of meters extra height, by your estimate.

["Your friends passed by earlier, they should be waiting for you at the base. I'm heading in myself."]

You eventually reach the outpost and stow your Zoids. Dismounting, you stretch and locate the mess hall, where you see Sara and Rick. Audrey follows after you.

"Hey."

"Hello." she responds, picking at her food.

"So the zoid we caught. You interested in it?"

She sighs quietly. "I don't know. I sort of feel sorry for it." she states in a melancholy tone.

"Why's that?"

"Well, its been out the for however long, trying to survive. Then we come in to its home and shoot his legs out, before dragging him off. I don't know what modifications would be needed to make it pilot-able, but I don't want to hurt it any more."

You smile to yourself. She's as big-hearted as always. You pat her on the shoulder reassuringly.
"We'll be as gentle with it as we can, I promise."
She returns the smile, and you both continue eating your meal. There's some time remaining after you finish, so you can do something else before bed.

"Sup, DeFlynn."

"Yo. Sara, about that wild zoid..."

"Pretty good find, right!" she says with a ear wide grin. "An undocumented Wild species. I can see the Mil. techs drooling already. I bet we could get half a million for it, easy."

You sigh before continuing. "I don't think we're going to sell it."

She stares at you intently.
"What?"

You rub you head sheepishly. "Well, it's kind of a waste just to hand it off. And they'd probably do some nasty experiments on it, so I figured..."

"Are you fucking kidding-" she says angrily, before putting her hand on her forehead. "This is so typical. Do you ever consider other peoples opinions before you make a decision?"

"I'll pay you." you say, trying to defuse the situation. "However much your share would have been."

She eyes you angrily before letting out an exasperated sigh.
"You can keep your chump change. But damn it, DeFlynn, you owe me! Completely overrides all the favors you had before."

Your awoken the next day by a loud noise outside. You get up and look out the window. What you see is a large, red object in the sky, slowly descending. It's a Whale King.

You quickly head outside and watch it touch down. You've never seen the massive transport in person before. From what you can tell, it's from the military. As the dust the landing blew up begins to settle, it's massive jaws open, and 2 pairs of Raptor zoids dismount, as well as personnel on regular vehicles.

You attempt to rouse everyone, and while they all manage to make it outside, the Whale King had landed half a mile away, and the troops have arrived before you can even reach your zoids.

The man you had seen at the desk greets the personnel in a jeep, his originally sloppy demeanor erased as he salutes smartly. A man dismounts from the vehicle and addresses him.

'Is the reported item there?" he says in a authoritative manner.

"Sir!" the base commander answers. "It is ready for transport at any time."

"Very good. We should act quickly, the wild ones have notoriously effective self recovery abilities."

The man gets back in the jeep, and says something into a speaker. The next moment, the Raptors make their way over to the open roof bay your zoids are at.

"What are they doing?" Rick says nervously.

"S-sir, they're a contractors from the Commission. They brought the wild one in."

"Is that right?" he says in mock impression. "Then you young people are to be congratulated. You of course will be rewarded for your effort in capturing the asset."

"What are you playing at?" you say, unable to hide the bite in your words. "You can't just take him from us."

"Oh, but I can." he says, reaching into his coat. He pulls out an embellished seal and holds it up for you to see. "This gives me full authority to act an government owned property, by the power of the Emperor himself. That item was found on government owned land, untamed as it may have been, which by extension, makes it government property. I can do as I please."

It's for the right reasons, and nobody likes an oppressive empire that takes what it wants from it's rightful owners.
>>
You can't decide on any action, so you head over to where Audrey's gone to for now. You think you hear the commander warning you no interfere, but you ignore it for now. Over at the zoid bay, you spot Audrey shouting as the Raptors secure the trailer the liger is on.

"Stop! Don't take him away!" she yells with tear filled eyes. You catch up to her, and she looks at you with a pained expression. "Gerald, why are they taking him? It's not fair!"

You hug her, and watch the troops cart away the zoid, as it roars in protest. You were too short sighted. You only thought about taking it for yourself. You never considered the consequences of taking it out of its territory.

"We'll figure something out." you say in an attempt to comfort her. Challenging them directly is suicide, but there might be an alternative.
