>Previous thread: http://archive.foolz.us/tg/thread/20115173/

Last time on the Summon Hero Quest, you were summoned to a floating isle by the name of Vernegard. You're supposed to be a new Guardian as the previous one was killed, the reason for death still unknown to you. After assaulting your Master with questions, you left her alone and in the library of Vernegard. As you flee, you run into another pair. A Guardian and her Master from the isle of Lancastle. After a brawl of epic proportions, the two of you went your separate ways. Your Summoner, Cadencia, spilled her guts when you asked her questions revolving around the history of the summoning and why you were summoned specifically. More questions raised, you both begin your departure from the forest.

The two of you walk through a clear cut path through the forest. The Zweihander sheathed on your back and the rifle in your hands. Your eye traces a line forward. "Are you alright?" Cadencia breaks the silence.
"I'm as fine as a human teenager summoned to another world can be." you sigh and scratch the back of your head. "Oh hey, what kind of stuff is found here in this forest? Is there a village nearby? What?"
"There is a village nearby full of Bast." she catches herself, "Animal people. Beasts, like talking animals."
"Wait, talking animals?" something clicks in the back of your head. Back home, there were people that loved animals a 'bit' too much, however the terminology is still fuzzy. "Talking animals? Are they intelligent?"
"Very much so. There are other Bast civilizations, but Vernegard's is strange. They're intelligent, civil, yet they live in the swamps. I still don't know why." Cadencia walks pulls some plants out of the way, clearing the path. You walk through the new space, stretching your arms. The humid climate begins to chip away at you, causing you to sweat even more. The light of the sun didn't help the matter either. "Crap, I'm getting hot."
"You know we can rest here. It's a clearing, so we'll be fine."
"Huh..."
>Take a rest
>Keep going and try to find the village
>What to do?
>>
Why would we leave the library? Our plan was to look up the life and times of previous guardians to figure out what we're actually supposed to DO here. Our objective is extremely vague. Why do we want to go to this village anyway? What's there that we actually care about?
>>
>>20129993

Rest for now and ask about the monsters in the forest and shit. We need to know what we're up against.

"Dammit, this heat." you grab the collar of your white shirt. You pull up, take it off and sling it over your shoulder. You breathe out, feeling the forest air against your stomach. Cadencia looks away as you perform the act.

"Are you sure that's-"

"It's hot as fuck. What do you expect me to do? Anyway, enough about that. What kind of monsters are in this forest?" if you had to do any fighting, it was best to know the target.

"There are sentient plants. That's pretty much it. There's nothing particularly dangerous around here, nothing I can't handle at least." that was reassuring. If a Summoner like Cadencia could handle the things here, no doubt you couldn't wade through them.

"Hey, about those books." you were, of course, referring to the history and notes about the previous heroes.

"I'll get them to you when we return, I promise. They're in the castle." Cadencia sits up from the stump she was sitting on. She stretches and wipes the sweat off her brow. "Shall we continue?"

You stop for a minute.

>What to do?
>>
>>20130062

Fuck the summoner in the clearing.
>>
Ask how many villagers of Bast have cat parts. Since Bast is, y'know, an Egyptian cat god back home. And the odds that we're in a comatose hallucination skyrocket if that little coincidence turns out to be an actual thing.

So are these talking animals unusual because they're intelligent and civil, or because they live in the swamps?
>>
>>20130083

Meh, Its not like i had a better idea. The faster we make that lineage the better off Vernegard is.
>>
>>20130062

Ask about the Bast people.
>>
>>20130102

We don't need to rape her. We just keep exposing our manly body parts to her until she can't it anymore. We shall become greatest anti-hero with moderation of swag.
>>
>>20130155

Her culture's already onboard with the idea that certain people are obligated to make babies with each other. I would not be surprised if they considered it more or less impossible for a guardian to rape a summoner or vice versa.

I have a very dim view of this culture so far.

"So these Bast people... do they have cat parts?" the question was so out of the blue it freezes Cadencia in her tracks.

"Do they have cat parts? I just said they were animal people, so yes, some do. Some are bears, some are dogs, some are even lizards. I thought I explained this. They're animal people." she scratches the top of her head. Her hand falls down to her hip the next second, she stands there, eying you. "Are you even paying attention?"

"Yeah, I am, just some disbelief is all. Anyway, these animals are unsusual because they're intelligent and civil, or because they live in swamps?"

"For here, it's both. Bast are basically animals that have come into contact with magic, granting them knowledge. I'm not aware of the 'creation legends' for the Bast people, so I wouldn't really know." Cadencia walks forward. She surveys the area, trying to find the best path to take. "I could have sworn I placed a marker here somewhere... ah, here it is!" Cadencia says as she walks over to a tree, grabbing a red ribbon tied to a branch.

"What about normal animals?"

"They're still around."

"I see, I see." so there were normal animals after all. Good to know.

"So how many other Guardians are there, approximately? You mentioned other Islands and worlds. Does this mean you have space flight, or some kind of portal magic?" you immediately follow Cadencia down the chosen path marked by the ribbon. She walks a couple feet in front of you, keeping her eyes on the dirt path.

"To be honest, I don't know. There are over eighty islands in this part of the world and there's probably more on the other side." well that gave you perspective. That many heroes, a lot of islands. You whistle in surprise. "There's also the Underworld, the Moon, the Diya. The other realms. I can't count them on one finger."

"Sheesh. That many abducted people? No, the lineages, right." you think and just sigh. Wait, the Moon? "Wait, you have space travel!? What's the Diya?"

"No, the Moon. They call themselves Lunarians or Lunelians or something. I just refer to them as aliens because that's what they are. They're technology is far beyond ours and yours." Cadencia is of course referring to your assault rifle. "Oh right, the Diya, they serve as the opposite of the so-called Lunarians. They're a primitive tribe who woship the sun, nothing too special."

You look at it, frown, and then look back to Cadencia. "So everyone and their grandmother has a Guardian."

"If you say it like that, yes."

The two of you continue down the path.

"So do you guys only get the Guardians from just my world or what?" you already heard about the man that participated in World War I. Or rather, you heard about him.

"As far as I know, yes. You confirmed it back there." she points back up the path without turning her head from the road ahead.

"Right, I did. Every city, island, realm has a guardia. Does Vernegard have any allies and friends among the other islands? Enemies?"

"Given our reputation, we only recieve pity. No one sees us as a threat or an asset. It's kind of sad, really." Cadencia sighs in dejection. "So no enemies, the closest thing to an enemy is Lancastle and they're more like a rival than anything. Maybe some day we can ally, but I don't see that happening anytime soon."

"Alright, what exactly is the Master-Guardian relationship going to be? I already told you that I won't accept you as my Master; that part of the psychosis WAS accurate."

"You have no interest in fulfilling it. The binding of our lives was supposed to cement a sort of 'marriage' type relationship. Before you say anything regarding the summoning that you nor I know nothing about, consult the texts and history back home. That'll shed some light on the situation... I hope."
>>
Hey OP, what timezone are you in?
I was expecting this tomorrow, because I thought you meant Thursday afternoon, server time.
>>
"You hope?" you roll your eyes. "Right, right. Oh, hey, how does magic work here?"

"Magic. What is magic? It's essentially imposing one element with another. There are facets of magic that are all connected. 'Words' or 'Commands' are the smaller portions of the spell. They form the basis of the spell, an outline, if you will. You fill that outline with more Words and Commands, and you try and get something that works. Don't get me wrong, every template can produce a spell, but it's difficult trying to get what you want. It's trial-and-error."

"I... see."

"Any questions?"

Why would you attempt a summoning you don't know anything about?
>>
>>20130464
"Right, but, socially speaking, what's expected of me, and this relationship to you? Are we expected to work in an employer-employee relationship, a military commander-subordinate relationship, or something else?
"You mentioned the Underworld, the Moon, and the Diya. The Lunarians have more advanced technology, yes? I'd like to be able to see some if possible.
"And can you tell me more of the Underworld?"
>>

"Why would you attempt a summoning you don't know anything about?" that was the first thing that came to your mind. If she didn't know about it, why did she perform it?

"I meant what you said about the fluke. How your memories are jumbled. I don't know where you were when you were summoned, nor what you were doing or how you were living. You should have known that, but apparently your memories were scrambled. Right? I apologize if I didn't make that clear." she says so without the sarcasm in her voice.

"You mentioned the Underworld, the Moon and the Diya. The Lunarians have more advanced technology, yes? I'd like to see some if possible. Oh, right, can you tell me more of the Underworld?" your immediate impression was that it was a land of the dead, where the souls of the deceased were stored.

And then, Cadencia literally points down to the ground as she walks. "The Underworld is also known as the Land Beneath the Clouds. It's home to many different species. Youkai, Bast, Fairies. It's mostly a melting pot of sorts ... but the population is something else. There are also more Remnants down there as well, making life incredibly difficult."

"So why aren't the Guardians doing their job?"

"They're trying their best but... it's too much. Oh right, you asked about the previous Guardian?" Cadencia made it close to the end of the pathway. It turns off and goes back into the forest. Passing through that, there's an open field of green and a large city. However, she stops just before the turn and points down. Below you there were thick, swirling pink clouds. "Our last Guardian died fighting down there. That should give you an idea of how bad it is."

You remain silent. You just watch the clouds float through the sky from on top of the island.

"Don't worry, I'll send you back home. It'll take some work, but I'm sure there's a way." Cadencia nods to assure you.

After a moment of silence, you found yourself walking behind Cadencia once more on the path toward Vernegard. "So most Guardians are able to survive fighting down there. Any particular reason why Vernegard's Guardians have such bad luck? From the sounds of it, none of the other islands have had to summon a new Guardian after their initial one was summoned."

"There are some Guardians that have more than one heir at a time. Vernegard just hasn't been that fortunate."

"So it's all about luck?"

"Or it's foolishness. From what I've heard, our last Guardian, the newly summoned one, had a level-head. His son, however, did not. He was arrogant, and he died. That's the end of it."

Your mouth goes dry, you swallow. "Huff... right, I won't be joining that side. What about the the lineage, what happened to the Vernegard lineage?"

"They were exterminated by terribly powerful Remnants. Aranaman the Dayeater, Maougren the Ressenter and Ahanati the Aggresor. The Guardian went in and was exterminated, crushed under the might of those three."

"What are they?"

"I only know the appearance of Maougren. It's a large, small floating island like creature with a thousand hands and a thousand eyes. They all work together, those three I mean, to take down their targets."

"I see..."

The two of you talk and the city eventually comes into view.

>What to do?

"Alright. Until you find a way to get me back, I'm stuck here as a Guardian. What are my rights? I get what part of the social contract I'M supposed to fulfill, but what do I get in return?
"Am I a respected member of the armed forces, or just a tool of the state, is my question."
>>
>>20130711
That's a good idea.

Anyway, shouldn't we be asking about more trivial things? Like basic social actions we should or shouldn't take (dropping the fact that we already assaulted someone) and existing laws?

"You're both a respected member of the military and a rank below the King, so you're pretty up there." Cadencia laughs to herself.

"I see, I can work with that. Alright, now about laws. Are they strict? What happens if I, say, kill someone and I'm found out? What happens?"

"You'd most likely get executed if you did it in cold blood. If you had a reason, and a VERY good reason for doing it. Like self defense, or he killed your friend or family or something, then you'd get off scott-free."

"Eye for an eye, then." you piece together what you know of the society and form a vague image in your head. It was a monarchy just like back in your world... sort of.

Finally, you get a good look at the city. There was a straight, stone-walk that lead to the castle. There were people shopping in a bizarre held down another alley. There were kids playing jump rope, smiling, giggling, having a good time. Adults talking in the streets. You turn your head left and right, taking in everything.

"So what do you think?" Cadencia says, placing her hands behind her back.

"Looks like a peaceful city. It's... nice." your eyes move away from the scenery and onto a window nearby. A small kid waves to you from the inside. White hair, blue eyes and an innocent smile. You force a smile, wave back and move on your way past Cadencia.

"What is it like here? Who is the king? What are they like? Is this a straight monarchy, or is there a council of ministers?"

"It's rather peaceful and days go by without much of a hastle. What are they like? Grandfather always looks out for the people. He's always cared for me when I was little, and he probably acts the same towards the villagers." she realizes that analogy has implications, "Uh.. never mind, and no, Grandfather does everything himself."

"So your father is a prince, or is it your mother that's a princess?" great, Cadencia is royalty. She should have said that far sooner. You hide your shock with a calm face.

"My father."

"Right, right, anyway, is there a place I could train and develop my skills? I may have a powerful body, but that won't get me anywhere. I need to train."

"I can make arrangements after we return home."

"Right, right." you thought about 'why would they need to teach you to use a sword, you had an assault rifle'. Getting into contact with the Lunarians could be nice.

With that, Cadencia walks forward and leads you to her own home.
