My name's Jack. I'm an information specialist.Log this:
The double-fine next to me is Wendy. She's trouble with bold underline italic. We're standing next to the body of a dead cyborg in the helipad service hall of the ReGene tower because of her and her disk.
The disk and the plans for more of these things. Full-body cyborg conversions. Hybrids. Yuji told me I was radioactive as long as I had a copy, but he was wrong. Anyone that touches this gets burned.
She told me she didn't know anything about it and I fell for her. If it hadn't been for Laudine I might be wondering why I died with a bullet in my brain last night, but Wendy unlocked when I buzzed her on it. Wendy had been in on the hybrid project after ReGene's CEO secretly revived it, but flipped on her conscience at the tail end and tried to wipe the entire thing. Not enough conscience to stop her from taking a copy to unload when she ran out of credit.
It's been forty-eight hours but it's almost over. We walk in the front door, the disk goes back to ReGene, they let BB go and let me get on with my life. That was their graph, anyway. I never liked following orders. The two dead men on the helipad can scan for that.
I keep telling myself BB is alive. They don't have enough reason to kill him just yet. Not until they have the disk.It was BB that gave us a place to go to ground after the Friskie's shooting, BB that hid us out in the blight with his freeger friends, BB that introde me to his old streetdoc and these turb neuromotor enhancers. Good old lotek BB with his Nestle x-10 arms and his ultralight.
Now we're here, and Julia Rose knows it. ReGene's renegade CEO wants the disk back. It's her baby, after all. It survived a permanent dismissal that took out the entire first-gen team.Part of me wonders if she knows I gave a copy of it to Laudine.

In this guy's case, he unlocks from the inside and only on his command or a remote override. Wendy's upgrades do their thing, and the rig spits back something interesting. The implant at the base of my neck is good for more than just answering phone calls when I'm unconscious or diving. It can confetti, which I've used once before and lived to tell about, but it can also broadcast a steady stream of information. In this case, what I've got is the cyborg's hall pass. At least until they figure it out and revoke it.

There's only one way to go. A straight tunnel that's no doubt a killing zone straight out of a standup game. We're rats, and this is our maze. That cold feeling again, then something else finally compiles. What else can rats do besides run mazes?
>>19538097They get in to places they aren't supposed to.
Only one guard below us, making his rounds. We watch for three minutes and he passes again from a different direction. There's a door with a medium-security console that I know Wendy can unlock externally. But that guard has got to go.

The woman at the desk is decked out in full country-club riding gear, but the look in her eyes is flat murder. I can tell at a glance she's had people killed. Probably even killed some herself."Jack, isn't it? What an honor to finally meet you. You're right on time."She smiles and waves me in nonchalantly. "You're welcome to come in too, dear," she calls in a crazed sing-song voice to Wendy."Put your weapons on the floor, please."What will you do now?

I say, put a gun to the disc.
She doesn't do anything I can see or register, but a moment later a door opens and Yuji surprises me by being alive. After him comes a woman in scrubs wheeling out a gurney."Don't worry, he's very much alive. We have to keep his higher motor functions suppressed, of course," Julia Rose tells me. I just have to say, Lego Quest's writer has a really slick style. Great tone. Very enjoyable read.
We unload a third-world coup's worth of gunpowder on him, but it's like shooting a brick wall. Somewhere in the chaos his arm goes flying, but there's something wrong. There's no blood. He doesn't move like his arm is gone.BB's shotgun sags and he slurs his words. "Affereffeg uh-duh noo-ribuhs," he grunts out.
The butler glances at the machinery coming out of his arm socket.
From the doorway a voice breaks the ringing in my ears. The cyber-ninja from before."I was hoping it would come to this. I haven't forgotten about you, jockey," he says as he raises his katana.

The cyberninja leaps into the air and catches a chestful of metal from BB's shotgun. It's enough to send him spinning off his trajectory and give me an instant to put another round in him. He's still coming so I try another trick.
My neuromotor enhancers win out and bean him square in the face. My case is rated for twenty thousand kilos, so I'm not too concerned about it making the trip or the landing. Then I hear the harsh BRAAP of Wendy's machine pistol and a gasp.
