No rolls will be required unless I specifically call for them.

Remember: Dave's magic is limited to basic spellcraft (Magic defense [which is simply running Prana through one's circuits to prevent outside influence from unfinished spells] , familiars, and detecting Prana flow) and his own magic (Amplification of reactions or processes) ))

It's going to be a long morning. Mother cooks a greek dish for breakfast, something I can't really identify, and the morning passes with some gun training and simple martial arts. I put the gun in my glove compartment, the tires already replaced. Mother placed powerful warding runes on the wheels in case anyone decides to slash them again.

I arrive at school an hour early.

What should I do here, before classes?

Check in with Caster's old Master. See if we can get some info on familiars. Where did you put the blueprints for the Familiars from Donnie's Mom again?

Barring that, say hidey-ho tyo Donnie and friends. Introduce us to your social circle, as it were.

Oh wait, at school. Go to the library I guess. Get some homework and shit done.

Good idea, maybe even stop by the gym for a little light exercise, get the ball rolling on Operation: Fabio the Magus.

Since we have some time, Young Master: tell Bob the Skull what kind of girl is your type:

Do you like them curvy and voluptuous like Great Stoking Ti-, I mean, dear Aunt Sakura?

Or perhaps you like them toned and athletic like Attie?

Or, perhaps slender yet vaguely feminine is more your style, sorta like Mom?

Do tell, Young Master.

First stop: Library.

While I get some homework done, I usually come here because my non-magus friends take to it. Harold and Tony are skinny, tall, and lanky - identical twins. Both blonde with blue hair. Tony dresses in red, Harold in blue. Some discussion rises about the party I broke up, and that inevitably leads to talk about the death of one of those involved. Not wanting to out myself, I shrug and mention that he was dealing with dangerous people anyway.

I also let them know that, sadly, I won't be able to DM for them this month. Need all the time I can get. They agree that they didn't really have the time for it, both of them are pretty entrenched in college level classes. Running Start, I think it it was.

Donnie and I meet up in the cafeteria. His father works in the morning and he's lazy when it comes to food, but not picky, so he comes early for the breakfast. We shoot the shit a while. He mentions that his computer will be open to me - he's got a pretty sizable Steam account.

Trombone! It's a trombone case!

Long with a flare at the end. Sheesh.

Anyway, I head to the gym early. No class taking place yet, so I slip into the locker room (the men's. I know some of you would steer me othewise.) and change into my shorts and tee. While I'm warming up, the teacher emerges. I nearly stumble, because I recognize her right away.

"Classes are in fifteen minutes." she says coldly. Her bright blue eyes and straight posture make her seem cold, somehow, as she crosses her arms under her slightly modest chest. She dresses practically, for good movement. In fact, almost... military style? Her outfit almost has the cut of fatigues, and is black with blue trim. Her hair is down to her shoulders, straight and black. "Why are you here early?"

"Extra practice. Already ate." I reply. "You the sub for this class?" I ask, stretching.

"Yes. Lisa Zolner." she says. "Miss Zolner, please."

The gym is empty as I finish my stretches. She seems to be gauging me. It feels... strange. Her stare is incredibly intense.
>>

Your mother had asked them to provide her with assistance with Howling. To that end, I am to safeguard you from harm and risk while your mother seeks out the one creating the foul material."

"Is that so? Why not go with her?"

She visibly stiffens.
"Your mother and I do not agree on tactics and methodology. She thought you and I would mesh better." she says - but not to my face as I lap the gym.

THIS COULD NOT POSSIBLY GO WRONG.

Make sure when she's at Donnie's place she's kept under surveillance. We don't want her planting mage-mines there so that when she leaves, she blows shit up.

Also: if you ever carry birth control, make SURE she doesn't find out. I've known some Executors can be very liberal about these things, but I' d want to stay on her on Miss Zolner's good side.

"I do not foresee an issue, David." she says, shifting her stance. "I need to be as close as possible to maintain a proper protection. The Church owes Eliza a great deal, and I personally owe you."

"...What?"

"My wounds." she states plainly. "Normally the energies Mercy takes allow me to heal myself. However, I did not have sufficient prana to access that function. You assissted me in regaining battle readiness."

"But isn't living with me sort of... Well..." I scratch the back of my head.

"It is not living in sin if we are not romantically involved." she states simply.

"... Fine. Can you tell me your abilities?"

"I am as physically fit as any executor is trained to be. My Circuits are exceptionally efficient if few in number. My Conceptual Weapon is built upon Forgiveness and Forgetfulness, and when activated passes through living matter to destroy magic circuits, memories, and 'purpose of self'." she speaks as if reciting. "My sword skills with two-handed weapons and hand and a half weapons are excellent, and I am exceptional at evading and defending against magical abilities even with Mercy unactivated. Further, the energies from what Mercy removes are returned to me in the form of healing alms."

Not rhe point. Let's not plan on dicking her over just cuz.

And let's think long-term. What better way to pacify the Church in regards to Eliza than to have an Executor living with/near her?
>>
An anon-bob in the previous thread had a good question: Who profits from muggles suddenly growing magic circuits? They use the drug, grow magic circuits and then they all died apparently simultaneously a few weeks later. There has to be a reason for this. Why would a mage want regular people to grow extremely stunted magic circuits before killing them all off?
>>
>>19519580
Nonsense. You can NEVER be too paranoid.
>>
>>19519613
To gather blood for magic rituals?
>>
Yo Davey! How is Attie bound to this world these days and what would you say her powerlevel is at? Is she still leeching prana from Lizzie, or did our former master give her lover a spanking hot new body with her awesome magical powers?
>>
>>19519622

More likely the Circuits link them to something. Mistress DID say they were odd. (radiating from a single "core" within the body. Transmitter, maybe? Or reciever?)
>>
>>19519622
You could just as easily slaughter some hobos for that. Why bother giving them magic circuits?
>>
>>19519655
Mage blood contains more mana. A LOT more mana.
>>
>>19519654
Could be. We should ask Eliza whether the malformed magic circuits are always in the same place or if they appear randomly on the victims' bodies.
>>
>>19519665
I suppose, but they're not really proper magi, are they? They're barely able to cast a spell without killing themselves. I don't think we know how much mana their blood would contain.
>>
They're harvesting. We need to figure out what sort of shit you can use these artificial mage dangley bits for.
>>
>>19519671

Definitely. And we still meed to ask Lisa about the opfor. The Church doesn't just send in the Executors for little shit.
>>

"Where are we meeting?"

"One hour after Donovan and his father vacate." she states.

"Alright. What do you know about the other-"

The bell rings, and we look at each other. It'll have to wait. Class passes without incident, as we run the mile. Lisa spurs everyone forth - even the kids who normally walk it are at least jogging. She puts a lot of effort into this - despite it being a cover, she's doing her best to teach, it seems. Will she ditch it once we're working together?

Classes pass, and I meed up with Donnie and his father, Boris. I help them pack a few things. He mentions offhand they'll be gone the whole week, coming back next Monday.

Donovan takes me to his room, where I'll be staying, and I unpack my things as he shows me around. He has a small atalier in the basement, nothing really out there - his mother was the mage, of course. His experiments mostly have to do with the nature of flames and heat, but he's already cleared out his research.

"YOu mentioned the lake, before?"

"Yeah. I have a familiar in it - here." he says, taking off a ring and putting it in my hand. "I won't be able to access it myself, but it has a mana supply to last this week. I put it out for practice, but..." he grins. "There's a skinny dipper practically every night. Dunno her name, but she lives across the pond. About an eight out of ten." he chuckles. So hey, free entertainment! Anyway, I should go. See you later."

They leave, and I've an hour to myself.
What should I do?
>>
>>19519875
We're a horny familiar. What the hell do you think we should do? Let's go check out that skinny dipper. For security purposes of course.

She comes out at night, dude. There'll be time for perving later.

>>19519875
You're probably familiar with the place already since you're good friends with Donny. If not, scout around a bit, see what the most likely entry points would be for an enemy attacker, that sort of thing.

If you're already comfortable with the layout of the place, call up your mom and ask her for more info about the Howl-users, their magic circuits and if she knows anything about how they all died. Also inform her of Lisa and the arrangement you made with her.

Maybe call Thomas if Eliza doesn't know anything. How IS the one-handed perv doing these days, anyway? I can't imagine him being on too friendly terms with Eliza these days...
>>
>>19519987

Maybe call up The Em- I mean Solomon too. If anybody around here knows what's goin on, it's him.
>>
>>19520070
Yeah. The Big E might be able to help.
>>
>>19520070
I'd rather not involve Solomon at this stage of the game just yet. I'm sure he'll be pissed if this drug starts killing a lot more people (future subjects/customers, and all that jazz), but we shouldn't involve too many outside folks just yet.

Also I can't help but feel like a bit of a pussy. All our options boil down to 'call others for info'. It's like we can't do anything by ourselves.
>>

We want to avoid the whole "be superhero" path David seems to walk before he summoned us. Calling others for help is a reasonable action when you have an option. No need to go in danger alone.
>>
>>19520157
... No.

>>19519987
I call up the barrier.
It seems fairly standard - a detection sphere around the house. Plus, it starts feeling warmer and warmer. Before it becomes uncomfortable, I turn it off. Seems that everything in the house is warded against fire.
... Huh, Donnie even warded my stuff too. Possibly when I was in the bathroom. So I suppose the Atalier barrier heats the place enough to incinerate the attacker, while leaving those inside and their things alone.

Neat. Though, I should be sparing. It eats Prana, and it seems there's only 24 total hours of operation in it. At the heating rate I noticed, it'd take two hours to get hot enough... something you turn on before you leave, then.

I call Thomas up.
He claims that the Mage's Association has a few theories regarding the drug.

1) It's an anti-magus terrorist. Someone has an automated system or device producing the materials. When too many people have magic circuits, then 'certain things' will occur, and weaken magic overall.

2) It's someone seeking money. The drug is sold for a lot of cash, and the high fatality rate might eventually drop as more batches are made.

3) It's someone seeking Prana and Od. The fatality rate might be him killing the users himself, spending the money to cover up the cause of death.

Further, he notes, there's a strange pattern in deaths - one lunar phase. So that's what my friend meant - not a cycle, a phase.
>>
Finally, I call mother and tell her I arrived safely. She is pleased by this, and jokingly tells me not to try to get into Lisa's pants too hard.

Attie says she'll come by on the third day to give me a gift.

The rest of the time is spent cleaning the guest room.

The doorbell rings, on time exactly.

I open it to find Lisa there, who enters without another word. She's still wearing her teacher's outfit, and doesn't seem like she's going to change. She has her case and a bag, which I take - er, no, which she takes up to her room.

She returns, looking around.
"What was it you wanted to ask, earlier?" she asks.

I ask her about Howling, but she shakes her head.
"That information was not shared with me, merely the knowledge that mages may be involved. I... believe that there was no information to share, when I was asked to come by."

I'm down with this. Kiss her ass a bit. She's a powerful opponent, so make her a powerful ally. Does she have any favorite foods? Ask your some folks who might now of her food preferences, then start cooking something for her. At the very least, it'll be a gesture of goodwill.

If not a cooking scene, then toy with that familiar. MAKE IT LOOK LIKE YOU'RE USING A COMPUTER (i.e. trance out staring blankly, etc). WHile she may know that there's a familiar about, don't give Lisa the impress you use familiars - it might set her off or give her the wrong idea.

>>19520802

Fair point. I guess a better question would be: why is the Church spooked enough to send a bloody Executor?

Those don't exactly grow on trees.
>>
There is something I were wondering. How effective your magecraft against another magus? Can you increase their blood pressure like you did to that guy or would they be able to just shrug it off?

And not any Executor but the one with a personal history with both Eliza and David.
>>
>>19520593
I tell her what I know, and she pays close attention.
"Why is the church interested?"

"Some of those who use the drug develop usable circuits. As in, some of them become heretics - but without the training that mages are generally given by a family." she says. "In a way, these heretics are worse than ones with training. They are more unpredictable, less documented, more liable to be true monsters rather than the simple cutthroats of the Clock Tower. There is a reason there has not been a Crusade upon the Clock Tower, David, and it is not one like 'We are not yet prepared'. We do not go to war because they can serve a purpose to us - and we, to them. We may be enemies, but we are not at true odds."

"...I see."

"At any rate, have you inspected the defenses?"

"Yes. They are not fast enough to defend against sudden assault, and would be hazardous to our own health."

"I see. Very well. What is your current plan?"

"Currently? Making dinner. Then we're heading out to check something out."

She raises an eyebrow. "I have a few ideas. I need to check some things, make a few calls, and meet someone in town."

>>19520949
...Not at all.

As in, if they have circuits, I probably can't hurt them with direct spells. You see, if a spell isn't complete, someone just has to generate and cycle prana through their system to prevent themselves from being effected.
>>
>>19520981
We probably can't do it at the same time... But that's still a very good idea for future use.

>>
"Anything I should know before I make dinner?"

"I'm vegetarian."

"...Okay then! Dinner salad it is." At least this is easier than most cooking. It's simple enough to find the materials I need, and it doesn't take long to put together. She eats quietly, and I check out the familiar.

... It's a fish. A mindless fish. Though it has more clarity underwater in terms of eyesight than expected, and enough intellect to avoid capture. Nothing much to say, really.

I finish my meal, and get ready to go out, putting on a coat.

I'm not sure where I plan to go, as of yet, but I have a few locations in mind. Downtown Tacoma is one. I could also go to Seattle though that would be a bit of a trip. Or Gig Harbor - though that town is pretty damn clean, it's closest.

To Tacoma!

I drive, pulling the gun from its home in my glove compartment, quickly checking it over. I look over Lisa.

"Can you do blessings?" I ask.

"Only if you have faith in God."
I frown.
"Okaythen."

I put the extra clip in a fanny-pack, and throw a coat on over the holster. Starting the car, I head to downtown Tacoma.

It's hard to be flattering about this town. There's not exactly slums, but parts of it are really old. Buildings made from actual brick, old. I keep Lisa at a distance - and see a group of hooded individuals gathered around one guy. It's not a social gathering. He soon closes a briefcase and starts walking briskly away from the group that just left, and I notice that his index and pinky finger have those claw-rings that Hot Topic sells.

Only they look really sharp, and made from iron, not chromed lead.

How should I approach the dealer?

"You say he'll kill my family? That's fan-fucking-tastic, he sure as shit can try. This woman here? She's nothing compared to my mom."

I lean in close. "Tell me what you know. Your family is innocent in this. I will make certain they are protected. I have contacts."

"But you wouldn't protect me."

"How do I know you wouldn't turn on me?"

"You can sign me up a Geas." he says, practically desperate. "If my family is safe, and you can gaurentee it, I'll tell you whatever you wanna know."

... Shit. I can call mom, have her see about protective custody, maybe even use connections with the local cops for protective custody. But protecting him personally might be a massive risk...

We shouldn't care about him, nor should we care abould his family.

In this case however we don't even know who and how powerful is the one who pulls the strings of this whole shit.
No, I just don't think this is a good idea.
Yes, the Old Master and Attie are powerful but this whole thing fucking stinks. This is clearly beyond the capability of some run-of-the-mill-mage.

I raise an eyebrow.
"Can you knock him out, at least?"

"... Fine." she says, slamming her fist onto his head. He slumps over.
"That was awful precise."

"I told you. Live capture." she hefts the body, and I open the trunk. We drive off, and I call mom.

"Heeeey. Uh. I got something for you."

"What would that be?"

"How about a Howling dealer ready to talk?"

"YOu can't be - look, just bring him here. I'll deal with the implications."

"I did promise him protection. And his family."

"You put innocents in danger for this?" Mom asks angrily. "You realize that anything can be a familiar, right? Even the damn crows? If he saw that charade you probably put up, he's not going to fuck around!"

"He's screaming." I hang up and pull over, popping the trunk and opening it - Oh god.

The skinless dealer screams at me, a symbol on his forehead bright with sickly purple light. I pull out my gun, and shoot him between the eyes. I slam the trunk shut, swearing. All that shit for nothing! I was so inept and... careless! FUCK! I sit on the bumper, and Lisa moves to put a hand on my shoulder.

Then she throws me to the ground and leaps atop me, as the trunk explodes.
"What the fuck!" I manage, the trunk hatch landing heavily in the road.
"I've seen that symbol in Church documents." she says, "Not all is lost."

"Still, I..."

"You made a mistake. You attempted to be... heroic, or at least... good. And you failed. It means nothing. Especially at your age. Now let's get to your mother's." she says.

I look in the trunk. There's a hole right through, nut it missed the axle. Some of the back structure is missing too. Damn, my car's getting pretty beat up. I get in the driver's seat and start driving.
"Who is it?"

"Not who. A school of magic."

I raise an eyebrow.

"Ever hear of Odin?"

Oh right before I forget... the guy behind this probably now knows your and Lisa's face. Nice job breaking it, master.
You and Lisa should probably stay away from your mother and Attie iand the Mansion if you don't want to endanger them.

"Rune magic? I thought that died out."

"No, very much alive. Not used widely, mostly by here-" she pauses. "Mostly by /pagans/. I didn't expect to encounter this in America." I shrug.

"So what are we dealing with?"

"Highly efficient and variable magic. Variable at least until we know what he... well, knows. You can't learn every rune, like Odin did. Just a few. It has to do with your Element."

"Really? How do you know this much?"

"... I'd rather not reflect on the matter." she says, "Suffice to say, I've dealt with them in the past."

"Alright."

I think for a moment, then call Mom again.

"What now?"

"The guy we had, he... Exploded."

The choice is yours.
If you go home now you should expect an ambush. Depending on the runes known to our enemy it may be messy. On the plus side, it will give us a lead.
If go go to Eliza, she may be able to get something useful out of a corpse. Depending on how much our enemy knows about her he will either strike or lay low and tighten a grip on other dealers. I doubt he is willing to start open confrontation with a Sorceress and the Church at the same time.

"Lisa. Can you..."

"Yes." she walks to pick up the box, then holds it to her ear, eyes closed. Then she stares at it. Then she pulls out her weapon, and for the first time, I see her invoke it.

"Mercy is the only gift I have to give." she declares, and the whole thing lights up - a shining light surrounding the basic pole at the center. She brings down the blade on the box, then undoes it - "Death is the duty of another." then she sighs, and finally pulls out a knife, kneeling beside it. Carefully, she opens it - long slits in the packaging, then she opens it normally.

"Just a letter. There's no magic tied to it, either."

She hands it to me, and I read.

'So you are David.

I had wondered what would come of you. What you would grow to be - like Eliza, or like you were meant to be. You see, boy, have you not ever wondered - where are your parents? Your real ones. And your magic - why there is not any contemporary or even old writings about it? Have you not wondered - why am I so unique? Ah, what little you know. The dreams should be happening now. Manifestations of your greatness also. Some sort of fire, I imagine...

I can tell you more. I can reveal many things to you, for I've watched you for a long time - longer than Atalanta or Eliza. I kept you safe until the War.

You can call me Sunderland. Or Fire-Keeper. I go by both. In either case - I shall be keeping an eye on you.'

The text at the bottom swirls a little.

'As for you, Bob, no, Alcohol is not the way to go with this one. I suggest being respectful if you want to woo her. Or have a chance, anyway.'
>>
>>19524642
Interesting, someone knows a lot about you. Don't show this to Lisa.

First off, Mistress and Attie are your real parents, just because they aren't your biological parents doesn't mean they aren't your real parents.

I fold it up and put it in my pocket.
"It's not relevant to the matter at hand." I find myself saying. "Eggs okay with you?" I ask.

She pauses, then nods. "Okay, good, because I can only do salad for so long before it starts getting boring. Maybe we can go to town some time and get some veggy burger patties or something. I can whip up some good food with that."

A decently proportioned greek salad, and then I think for a moment. Nah. I don't really want to do wine. For one thing, we could be attacked at any moment. For another, I'm underage. For yet another, it'd feel like... Cheating, somehow? I dunno. I agree with the letter.

Well, it's alright. You didn't do it in any case. I can't really be mad at you for sentiments like that. Probably thought I was creepy.

Small talk with her doesn't exactly go well. She seems... uninterested in most subjects, though she comments that she would not mind trying some of Attie's apples. Time passes, and the meal is finished.
"You can take the first shower." I mention offhand, stretching. She nods and wanders off, while I get to work on the dishes. I finish as I hear the water start up, and then I realize that their bathroom door doesn't latch.

...Nah, I shouldn't even consider it. I've better shit to do, right?

Kid, this tactic worked for your mother, but Attie is entirely different than this girl. Finish the dishes and read a book or something. As tempting as it is, for the both of us, you should let this chance go. It'll be worth it.

If only I had prehensile eye-stalks... By which, I mean that thou art correct, young master. She is not the type to miss that sort of observation, and it is for little gain.

Well.. It's probably a bad idea to peep on her, but no one can blame you if you accidentally walk in on her while she's changing!
>>
>>19525639
Bad Black Bob, that tactic won't work here. We'll convince David to be a gentleman.

Right. I'll just... Read a book!

I head downstairs and do my magic studies quietly, waiting for her to finish. Time passes, and I take my own shower. It isn't long before I'm back in bed, sleeping - and anothe dream comes upon me. It's longer, this time. This time, the tubing is thicker, attatched to me painfully. The gears in the distance rotate faster than before, and where fire blossomed on my arms in the past, now it only flickers. something is deeply foreboding. I don't understand it. I don't, I don't.... get it.

((End of thread two. TIGER DOJO STARTS NOW, until 404. ))

So, how badly would we have screwed ourselves over if we went to peek in the shower?
>>

THe funny thing

Is that she probably wouldn't have cared all that much. Lisa doesn't really see herself as female, or at least not in a sexual way. She doesn't really think herself worth covering up, to be honest, or dressing up.
>>
>>19525959
I'm not surprised at all.
>>
>>19526121
And here I worried about writing her right.
>>

Though from my Real-Life-Expierience with nuns they are pretty much either No-Fun-Allowed down to the core or the creepy-smiling kind.
And all of them are pretty unsettling.
>>
>>19525735
That swirly text, David could read it, could anyone else have read it, and if they could would it have taken effort and/or magic?
>>
Damn time zones. Archived, tho.

Aside: Good run, mate. the dealer-bomb was a nice touch. And now Odhinn? Hoo, shit. Dis gon b gud,
>>
Shit. Internet died on me. At least I didn't miss much.
Does David knows RAP. As in, Reinforcement, Alteration, Projection?
I was under the impression that it's basic stuff that even Shirou knew to some decree.
>>
>>19529131
If you ever read FSN you'd understand just how useless and inefficient those are compared to any other magic.
>>
>>19529162
I know it. Without bullshit haxx anyway.
Still, it may come in handy in some situations and I would like to know our full resources.
>>
>>19529131
He knows OF them, but cannot use these magics. Due to certain weirdnesses of his abilities, David is even MORE focused than most Nasu mages.

>>19526308
Actually, only Bob could - but you revealed it to him anyway.

>Actually, only Bob could - but you revealed it to him anyway.

Can this Fire-Keeper actually read what we write here or was letter enchanted to respond to whatever we were saying at the moment?
>>
>>19529629
The latter, and only that text, not the letter as a whole.
>>
By the way...

I'm probably going to run the quest earlier next week. Expect it around ten AM or sooner.
>>
>>19530085
What time zone?
>>
>>19530396
My apologies, Pacific.
