YOU ARE ALEX RASTON. And you're currently watching the world's most awkward family reunion. Zack and the man, who you now know IS his long lost father, are kinda trying to talk.

You realize not bringing Laurie was a good idea, since he would have opened the conversation by hitting the captain with a barstool.

You look at the rest of your crew. Elsie is sitting next to you, clearly debating her next course of action. Dave is trying to converse with the two other members of the pack. Zack and his dad have sorta removed themselves from the rest of the group, and are currently talking at the next table over. You could probably listen in if you wanted to.

You give Elsie a slight nudge and a nod. She clues in rather quickly, and makes it look like you're making small talk while you direct your attention elsewhere.

"... left. Why?"

"Well, it's pretty simple. Your mother and I loved each other but... it was hard sometimes. Occasionally we'd fight, and I'd go stay the night at my brother's house or something, give us both time to cool down a bit. Same thing happened, I ended up staying with some friends for a couple days, and I was on my way home when the world ended."

"What stopped you from just coming home?"

"A building fell on me."

"... what?"
>>
>>19232279

"I'm not kidding, I was going through the city, a quake hit, and I looked up to see an incoming office building in the middle of a traffic jam. I woke up I'm not sure how long later, and it took me a couple of days to dig myself out. I was lucky, since where the building hit me was one of those huge windows over a spacious meeting area. When I got out, I was sick and exhausted in every way I could be. As I recovered, I moved. By the time I got to the house, I saw it had been looted by somebody and then torched. I thought that you were killed."

"So what then?"

"I kept moving, tried not to think about it. I saw people needed help, helped them. Eventually ended up signing with the wolves. So Lawrence didn't come?"

"He was needed elsewhere, and well.... he's not great at dealing with personal problems."

"He gets that from his mother. What about your sister?"

"Sister?"

"Carry was- yeah, never mind. I think I already know the answer. What happened to you three after I left?" He asks, taking a sip of beer while Zack winces slightly knowing how bad the story is.

You turn your attention back to Elsie. "- So then apparently Dervish took after him with a shovel. Apparently raising Morning Glories is hard enough without Steve coming home drunk and sleeping in the flower bed."

"So El." You say, and she perks up with the notice that you're apparently done spying. "We're now one win away from the big money."

She smiles a little. Then a lot. "Even if we get taken out now, we've got another million dollars coming in." she says "I'd never believe it, but we're doing it Alex. We might actually pull it off."

The both of you share a moment of almost giddyness. "Say El, what does the singles side of things look like?"

"Haven't been paying attention, really. I think there's a match on now, if you want to watch it." She gestures to one of the Bar's TVs nearby, currently off.

You get the barkeep to turn on the TV. You hear two voices, And you guess that they're the commentators.

"And we can see him coming up the back way now, looks like his opponent lost him. This Viper is as slippery as his name."

"Indeed Kyle."

You see a yellow and black core standing in the middle of the arena on a hill, slowly circling around. Suddenly, another one in dark purples and reds bursts up from behind him and rushes with twin laser swords on either arm. At the last second, the Black and Yellow core slides to the side, and the other core hits a landmine, and then a blue shimmer seems to reach out and PUSH, slamming him into the far wall, followed closely by a couple of blasts from the shoulder cannon.

"And it looks like the Professor's luck continues to hold. He's moving onto the next round, Rumble Bee advances to the quarter finals. What an amazing Cinderella story here, let's just hope for his sake he can wrap this up before the carriage goes back to a pumpkin."

"I sure do like pumpkins Kyle."
>>
>>19232945

At this point the core opens up, and it's pilot steps out into clear view of the crowd. He's wearing jeans and a black t-shirt, with the image of what looks like a wasp with boxing gloves on it. He's also got a pair of red goggles pushed up on his forehead as he addresses the crowd. "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!?!" He throws his arms up, while the crowd goes wild. "IS THAT NOT WHY YOU ARE HERE?!"

At this point another figure gets put on the camera. A familiar one. "Are you drunk again Danny?" Asks Nine-Ball.

"Shut up! I crush you next!"

"You got two rounds between me and you."

"Fuck you and your logic."

"And yet you're supposed to be the doctor...."

The two bicker for several more minutes.

Then Elsie comments "Didn't Dervish says he knows that guy?"

"Which one?"

"The one with the terrible name."

"Not really helping."

She gives you a gentle nudge. "Anyway, I thought he was a scientist or something. What's he doing in a giant robot cage match?"

"An excellent question. Hey look, another match..."

You hear Fraide's voice before you see the action on screen. "QUIT RUNNING, YOU'LL ONLY DIE TIRED!"

Then you see it. A Heavy looking core like Ari's is being chased through the desert by what can only be described as some form of Robot Wolfman. It fires a hail of rockets, which the beast dodges. Then some sort of weird electric field comes off the claws as it strikes, and sheers off both arms in a single blow. The pilot begins to beg for the match to end, while Fraide just lets out a mad villainous cackle. Between him and 'Rumble Bee', you're suddenly VERY glad you went for the team events, not the solo competition.

"I'm not sure. But I've got a thought."

"There's rumors all over as to what the 'next big thing' the corps are planning to reveal soon is. Remember that prototype Rayleonard sent us after?" You shudder at the memory. For a moment you can almost feel it's cold hateful gaze on you.

"You think everyone's gonna be flying those soon?"

"Maybe."

"This is Elsie Winters." you say.

Elsie then picks up where you left off. "I'm one of Laurie's and Alex's squad-mates. Team sniper." She kinda looks at you like she's debating telling him about you two, and then decides against it.

"So, how many other people does your squad have?"

"Just one, Mooch runs overwatch."

"Who the hell is 'Mooch'?"

"Mooch is something you have to experience for yourself." You say simply, and you take a sip of beer and listen in on the conversation at the next table.

".... so then I look at her Dad, and said 'I'm sorry sir, but I'm a little tied up at the moment." They burst out laughing, and you kinda wish you heard the rest of that story.

"Hey Ari, what are you playing there?"

"A game. I asked Dervish for some advice on improving my skills, and he gave me this." She holds up some sort of portable gaming device. On it looks like some sort of Megaman game.

"How is this supposed to improve your skills?"

"According to Dervish? Tests reflexes, rewards creative thinking, boosts threat analysis skills, and confronts you with ever changing circumstances in a mildly stressful situation. All the factors present while flying, but less draining, lower key, and disguised as 'fun' so it sinks in better."

"No replacement for actual cockpit time."

"Yeah, but it also helps to keep your basic skills from degrading too much if you can't pilot or run a sim for a long period of time, like if you're confined to a hospital bed or something. And it's also good for downtime, training while having fun."

"And Dervish trains with one?"

"Actually, he had something he called a ROM hack that was like a million times harder than this. Seriously, I couldn't make it out of the first room on that thing."

"Huh." It makes for some interesting food for thought.

You load up the level, and immediately take a hit that eats half your life-bar. You barely manage to get clear of that when you get hit by a guy who's shot does now damage, but randomly scrambles your controls. and that's when the screen becomes flooded with bits.

"Ahhh! Holy Jesus what are these goddamn animals?!"

After clearing the swarm, you enter a room with the same 'boss fight' music you heard with Ari's game. Mid boss-speech your screen goes dark as the enemy cuts out your EYES and you have to try and fight him based on echolocation with scrambled controls.

It ended about as well as you'd expect.

"What the fuck? Dervish plays that? He plays that for FUN?!?"

"He said he finds it soothing."

You begin doing a serious reassessment of a man you thought you knew.

>What next?

You hand the game to Mooch.

"I'm not sure I want to play something that just castrated you man."

"Come on, how bad could it be?" You chide.

"Losing didn't hurt your pride at all?"

"Totally painless."
>>
>>19234478

a minute later, the game over music sounds.

"What the fuck? You said it was painless! I just got kicked so hard that I think my testicles are gone. Just GONE Alex."

"Sometimes Mooch, in order to hurt someone you must tell them terrible lies."

You note that Laurie has gone to bed, and Ari reclaims her game device.

Hi, when you were younger did you ever think you'd become a core pilot? Is that something you wanted to do or sort of fell into?

>>
>>19234604
What are some of your hobbies outside of piloting?

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?

What is your opinion on puppies?
>>
>>19234604
Whats your biggest fear for Alex?

Ok ok enough from me, I'll let others get questions in
>>
>>19234604
Might be a bit personal, but how do you feel about your relationship with Alex right now?
>>
>>19234610

My dad was in the Militia before he passed. I kinda wanted to try and give back to the community you know?

The piloting aptitude was a bit of a surprise, so I guess I fell into that bit....

>>19234613

She's a sweet kid, but she doesn't really get the potential for the whole 'horrors of war' shit you can see out here.

I'm hoping that when she does, it doesn't break her. Or get her killed. I'm more concerned that she's gonna get hurt and Alex is going to lose it. He's very protective of her.

>>19234615

N-normal sized? I guess? Now you've got me concerned though.
>>
Alright, what would be your ideal core?
If you had to choose another line of work aside from being a core pilot, what would you choose.
>>
>>19234630
Oh good, very petite. Just, you know, keeping tabs in case we ever get into a situation that requires someone with small hands.
It may involve spinning rims. And Mooch.
>>
>>19234618

I... don't know. I always liked Hope, but it was all I really knew too. i don't like the idea of just... abandoning them, but I never really knew how much more there is to the world.

>>19234620

I like to read, and Alex got me hooked on that stupid fucking robot show (Dammit Lister, Elaine's perfect for you and you know it...).

I don't really like Ice cream. I have sensitive teeth.

I think they're cue, but I am terrible at taking care of living things, and it'd be too much of a hassle for me to try and raise one in addition to everything else in my life.

>>19234626

I'm not sure. I love him, I know that much, I just hope that's enough for now.

>>19234632

Something like what I have now: reverse jointed legs are a nice compromise between a quad leg's stability and a biped's mobility. Maybe some auto turrets for point den fence and early warning so I can pay more attention to my shot and less to the possibility of somebody trying to sneak up on me.
>>
>>19234632

Other than piloting.... I don't know. I'm not really qualified to do anything else.

I guess write? Not sure I could make a living like that though.

>>19234643

.... You're starting to creep me out....

Who would win in a fight, a polar bear or a great white shark?

It's a big polar bear and not that big a great white so they're around the same weight class.

The arena is a large slope filled to the half way point with water.
>>
>>19234675
What do you think of Mooch's anime money scheme?

Do you think (remember, they aren't here to hear this) Alex and his group has a serious chance of winning the next match?

I recall you mentioning Alex has changed, how exactly? You never specified to my knowledge.

For something not as serious...
What is your favorite color?
What is your quest?
>>
What's the one thing that just plain pisses you off the most? Get's you angry, mad, pissed beyond belief, seeing red, makes your blood boil, and just plain enraged.
Everybody has one, you can trust anon on that.
>>
>>19234685

Thanks, angry person.

>>19234686

.... Mooch, is that you?

>>19234691

His scheme seems horrifyingly plausible.

I guess he has decent odds? I don't actually know who they're up against yet.

As to how he's changed... He's gotten a lot more serious lately. he never seems to stop long enough to take a breath half the time. I think He still sees hope as his fault, and it's really getting to him. Sometimes I see the old Alex coming through but... I don't know. I still care. He's still a friend, he's still the same person who's always been there for me. What we went through could change anybody.

I never really cared for Monty Python as much, it had a habit of getting terribly silly. But my favorite color.... I remember before going to hope, I think I was six at the time, my Dad took me to the ocean. I remember seeing the water stretch out forever, and endless blue-green... I think that's my favorite color, reminds me of him.

>>19234712

If I have one, I haven't encountered it. I do find it irritating how Dave and Alex can be so open and almost flippant about matters of the heart. It's hard for some people to SAY these things, and they can just go and do it while the rest of us shuffle around awkwardly and try to cope.

What do you think Nineball has to do with all of this? He, allegedly, helped destroy Hope, then helped save Alex from something? Gave him a weird necklace. What's up with all of this?

If you could talk to anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?
>>
>>19234793
Just know that Alex loves you and seems to like the little awkward things you do, so don't stress out about them.
>>
>>19234809

>>19234834

I know, and I know HE knows, but.... it's hard sometimes alright? Like the glasses thing, I've been hiding it for YEARS and suddenly it's all cool? It never mattered to him? What the hell.

>>19234806

>Hard to say how long it will last, because combat tends to be FAST and there's going to be LOTS of it in the future.

>As far as the story goes... Tourney is like the last part of chapter two of 10-12, depending on route. First three introduce the major players, and set up the rest of everything. Should go quite a bit faster from there.
>>
Have a nice night.
Remember, spinning rims.

>>19234845
You didn't notice that necklace he's been wearing nonstop for the last few weeks? He never takes it off.

So, any wacky stories you'd like to share that we wouldn't know about already, being the semi-omnipresent beings we are?

>Yes and no. The conversations are non-canon, opinions and information gleaned ARE. This is insight, what you do with it is up to you.

Take a look at Alex's neck next time he's getting changed if you can, not that he'll be able to tell you very much (because he doesn't know much about it himself).
Also what would you most like to do next time you get some down time? Either with Alex, the team, or by yourself.
>>
>>19234968

I don't what I want to do. I like just sort of relaxing with my friends. Or just Alex.
