Hello servo skull.
>>
You are Elesh Phryx, rogue techpriest and captain of the Sword class frigate 'Sword of the Omnissiah'. 'Heavenly Forge' greedily devours an asteroid twice her size, protected by a half dozen assorted ships of the Imperial Navy that eagerly await the adamantium to repair their damaged hulls. Advi estimates that the factory ship will be unable to store the minerals that you are allowed to keep for your troubles, though you're quite certain that Captain Beriaun would gladly trade or purchase the surplus for her command. Beriaun's ship, 'Lord Nethia', lingers near your frigate.

"Elesh, Captain Beriaun has invited you to dine aboard 'Lord Nethia' in an hour's time." Athe stands beside you with a procured data slate that you requested. "Shall I have... Dess prepare a shuttle?"

>tonight, we dine... In the Navy, yes you can sail the seven voids

If they were so nice to invite us, I don't see why not.

maybe take Athe with us?

>Advi estimates that the factory ship will be unable to store the minerals that you are allowed to keep for your troubles, though you're quite certain that Captain Beriaun would gladly trade or purchase the surplus for her command.

Gaining some favour with the Imperial Navy sounds very, very good.

>tonight, we dine... In the Navy, yes you can sail the seven voids
I'm sure the invitation specified if we can bring other guests... can we?
>>
>>19228910
>>19228937

Athe notes that it is quite acceptable to bring a companion to such invitations.
>>
>>19228882
Let us dress in our fanciest robes and head off for an elegant dinner!

Oh, and unless it would appear impolite, bring Athe along as well.
>>
>>19228986
In that case, we should probably bring Athe. She's a lot better at social situations with non-mechanicus people.

We should also have dinner on the Sword with Julin the next day or so, to make up for not taking her along to the Lord Nethia.

"I trust you have maintained suitable attire, Athe."

"I'll meet you in the shuttle bay, Elesh."

Within a strangely condensed time frame, you and Athe stand upon the edge of your lighter's ramp. As Athe cradles a choice bottle of liqueur against her immaculate dress, you make the aquila toward Beriaun. "Permission to come aboard, Captain?"

Your aquila is returned by the augmented woman, and you note a hint of synth skin upon her right hand. "Permission granted. Welcome to 'Lord Nethia', Captain Phryx."

Athe politely offers the bottle to Beriaun, who smiles as her bionic eye inspects the label. "A fine choice of drink. I do believe we'll get along quite well."

"We'll be dining with Captains Foru and Wern tonight. We are all quite interested to hear your version of the rumors surrounding you and the raid upon Aquari, Captain."

>any questions while you walk?
>make up a story about your adventures and goings on?
>other?
>>
>>19229351
I can't really think of anything other than asking her about what she is willing to trade in exchange for the ores and asking her about the synthetic arm if it seems appropriate.

Also, how much of what we did on Aquari is illegal?
We should tell them a suitably exegerrated story about all the legal stuff we did there.
>>
>>19229351
>any questions while you walk?
Ask about the Magos who was aboard her ship the last time we met.

Ask the captain about her opinion concerning the recent developments in the sector. Dark Eldar raiding Aquari, or the appearence of that space hulk.

>make up a story about your adventures and goings on?
As long as we don't mention looting all those xenos stuff, I guess we don't even need to make stuff up.
>>
>>19229413
Illegal stuff?
considering that your allies in the escape are wanted pirates and that you essentially stole a fair amount of stuff.
oh, and you looted everything xenos related you could along the way.
>>
>>19229447
>considering that your allies in the escape are wanted pirates and that you essentially stole a fair amount of stuff.
>oh, and you looted everything xenos related you could along the way.

Yeah, those will be left out.
>>
>>19229447
Make sure to mention how well our second in command did, commanding the defense in orbit though. And how happy we are for him that he's gone on to command his own vessel.
>>
>>19229484
I thought Quein was just a voidmaster before he left and not the second in command?
>>
>>19229447
Our adventure was that while enjoying a private party we had been invited to, we were attacked by the foul xenos, so while inebreated, we stole one of their ships, drove off most of the invaders and while trying to establish a means of escape, one of the foul xenos ambushed us, removing our arm, so in fair order, we removed his head... and that was how we bested a dark eldar raiding party...
>>
>>19229351
First we need to see what kind of rumours there are about us before we start talking. Then we can adapt them to our story if necessary or clear up any uncomfortable misunderstandings.
>>
>>19229505
Oh. Well either way, he showed himself certainly capable as second, when he took command while we and the rest of the command staff were away. I think he deserves some recognition for it is all.
>>
"I'm afraid I can not offer you much of a tangible reward for any adamantium that you wish to sell, Captain. We've had little chance to actually catch the pirates in the system, though we've detonated a few plasma reactors with weapons fire before the rest escaped. Perhaps our luck will change during your vessel's operations, Emperor willing, and my ability to compensate you will be increased."

>gonna give another 10 min or so before typing up the dinner.
>>
>>19229510
>we stole one of their ships
>Stealing and using foul Xenotech
I'm quite sure you are mistaken, good definitely-not-heretical sir.
>>
>>19229573
SUBTLY attempt to gauge her feelings towards the AdMech and especially the sector leader's urge for collecting ships. If, when the Sisters and Gruuman make their move we can give them the support of the Navy or at least assure them that the navy won't be on the AdMech's side, I'm sure they'd be grateful.
>>
>>19229573
>"I'm afraid I can not offer you much of a tangible reward for any adamantium that you wish to sell"
"The intangible rewards tend to be the most interesting... and valuable, Captain."
>>
>>19229583
Ah, thank you for correcting me error.
We destroyed many foul xeno ships, before they could deploy their forces.
>>
>>19229596
>attempt to gauge her feelings towards the AdMech and especially the sector leader's urge for collecting ships
Seconding this.

Perhaps we could bring it up as an odd rumor we've heard, and see if the captain has any opinion on the matter.
>>
"I've found that intangible goods are often worth more than tangible ones, Captain. Worry not."

You spend the remainder of your walk inquiring about a certain Magos Vorgus, learning that he was commanding a Mechanicus light cruiser at the time you drove him into a nearly blind fury. Fortunately for you, he was forced to return to Feophe to explain why he allowed Magos Grumman to claim the battlecruiser 'Righteous Flame'. "After weeks of his air of superiority, we were all quite entertained by his sudden rage toward you, Captain."

The meal is quite delicious, though you are quite perplexed by a certain red fruit's lack of taste. On the plus side, you are able to indulge in the fine texture of the bites. Athe skillfully keeps the conversation upon the ships of each Captain and the ships they command during the meal. Captain Foru is quite verbose as he speaks of his Dauntless class light cruiser 'Stoic'. Captain Wern's pride seems to be the skill of his attack squadrons aboard the Dictator class cruiser 'Veriathia'. Both took severe damage during an encounter with xenos vessels at the system's edge, though the xenos were eventually driven off. "We've still yet to identify the filth." spits Captain Wern.

>cont
>>
At the conclusion of the meal, drinks begin to flow, and the Captains soon ignore Athe's attempts to avoid the subject of Aquari.
"We've heard quite a few rumors, Captain Phryx."
"They say that you were forced to make your escape in the company of two wanted pirates, and that you launched an attack upon the xenos raiding vessels when no other exit existed."
"We know that your man rallied a small group of ships in orbit, Labado called in favors from most of us to call for his warrant of trade."
"What was it like to pilot the xenos craft? They say that a lightning couldn't even catch one."

With a silent sigh, you collect your thoughts to prepare a suitable story for the rumors.

>They're all true, I'm a bad ass
>Lie, lie, lie, lie!
>Like the shape of water in a container, truth is subjective...
>other
>>
>>19230096
I don't see what the problem with going with the truth is, as long as we make it clear that we didn't ENJOY having to use foul Xenos technology to make our escape. And as for the two pirates..... when you're in a life or death situation like that, you end up with some strange bedfellows.

Just avoid mentioning all the xenos shit we looted.
>>
>"They say that you were forced to make your escape in the company of two wanted pirates, and that you launched an attack upon the xenos raiding vessels when no other exit existed."

We were only informed of their identity after it all happened.
How were we supposed to know that wanted pirates were having a vacation at the same place as us?

>"We know that your man rallied a small group of ships in orbit, Labado called in favors from most of us to call for his warrant of trade."
Yes, he was very grateful for everything we tought him about captaining last time we met him.

>"What was it like to pilot the xenos craft? They say that a lightning couldn't even catch one."

Lie about that one and tell them that someone else(like Wilson)piloted it, we were just along for the ride.

And, I need to go to sleep now, hope to catch the rest in the archives.
>>
>>19230134 here
>>19230167

>Lie about that one and tell them that someone else(like Wilson)piloted it, we were just along for the ride.

Definitely this.
>>
>>19230167
All of this.
>>
>>19230082
>>19230096
>Like the shape of water in a container, truth is subjective...
Pirates, you say? They were not but fellow tourists to my eyes. When facing the dreaded xenos, one can hardly inquire into the sometimes checkered past of one's allies; a human face is a friendly face.

As for the xenos craft, I can say there is no joy to be had in piloting one. Jittery, fragile things, no match for our fine Imperial craftsmanship.
>>
>>19230096
What was the fruit we ate that had no taste?

>>19230167
Seconding these, although I am curious on what exactly Quein got out of his deal.
>>
>>19230284
...he got a Warrant of Trade so he can become a Rogue Trader. That's a pretty big thing to get out of the deal.
>>
>>19230305
Is it a RT's warrant of trade though? That's what I was curious on and didn't want to assume because of how huge that would be.
>>
>>19230323
>>19230305
It was called a minor warrent of trade. So I'd guess it's limited to this sector, or something.
>>
>>19230334
Sounds about right.
>>
Alcohol and your stories entertain your fellow diners for quite a time, though you make certain to leave certain details out or change them entirely. As the night draws to a close, Beriaun finally asks the question that the other Captains seem to have expected.

"Captain Phryx, it is quite unheard of for the Mechanicus to entrust a warp-capable war ship to any techpriest below the rank of Magos. Just how -did- you come by your command, and who do you serve? We're well aware that your first appearance was in the Serentus system several months ago."

You suppress your pirate instinct to draw your concealed weapons immediately, doubting your ability to shoot your way off a Navy warship.

Quein was given an extremely minor warrant of trade. He was essentially given a ship, a crew, and told to go out and make the Labado merchant families money. He basically is basically a sponsored trader in the sector, though there is likely some gray in there. What with his ship being a war ship and apparently having a variable figure head...
>>
>>19230438
>Elesh no make words good, Athe speak make!

Damnit, don't make options that might be bad sound so hilariously right! Then again, at this point Athe's probably the better dissembler than us by now...Sure, go with that.
>>
>>19230438
Why don't we just stick with our normal story, which was that we were serving on the ship when it was attacked, and as the highest ranking surviving officer, we took command. Since no heirs have stepped forwards to claim the ship, it just sort of defaulted to us.
As for "who do we serve?" I find it a little odd they would ask that after we claimed a Battlecruiser for Magos Grumman.
>>
>>19230438
>Who do you serve?
The Omnissiah, of course.

>Just how.
You see, I was born and raised on Occidens-Philadelphios...

On second thought:
>Elesh no make words good, Athe speak make!
>>
>>19230438
"I got lucky with some pirates =3"
We can omit that were the pirates.
>>
>>19230438
I'd say we claim Magos Grumman as our superior. He's a fairly legitimate fellow

As for how we came to have a ship, we were an officer aboard a small raider and took command after the captain was killed. The frigate that is now the "Sword of the Omnissiah" was captured in battle with the pirates and awarded to us for our valorous actions under fire.
>>
>>19230501
Seconding following our original story. Otherwise, they may catch on if we tell them two different things...
>>
anyone care to tie break or change their vote?

currently seeing a tie of "oh god Athe make words" and "repeat the original story until it is true"
>>
>>19230632
I say stick with the original story.
>>
>>19230632
We could always go with a middle ground, and have Athe tell a version of our usual story.
>>
"Our ship was attacked by pirates in the Jutsi system while we were defending a transport vessel. We failed our mission and took heavy damage and losses. I was simply the highest rank that remained. While conducting repairs in an asteroid field, a damaged pirate vessel from the battle encountered us and attempted to take the ship as a prize. Athe defeated their captain in combat and her demoralized crew was slaughtered to the last man. We traded the raider away to cover our repair costs and refits. The Omnissiah has simply blessed my luck, as Magos Grumman has expressed interest in improving my abilities. I do what I can to repay the debt I owe him for his generosity."

Wern and Foru seem content with your answer, though Beriaun still studies you intently.

>cont
>not risking "field too long" as it tends to result in auto-ban
>>
"Commander, I believe you are allowing your mistrust of Magos Vorgus to taint your opinion of your guest. Not all techpriests are out to use us as expendable pawns." Foru's slight drunken drawl partially frees the chamber of tension.

"Fair enough, Captain. I believe I've made enough of a paranoid fool of myself for one sitting." sighs Beriaun.

Soon enough you find yourself returning to 'Sword', with Athe's head resting upon your shoulder drunkenly.

>orders?
>it will take a full month to mine the Adamantium deposit, but only two weeks to mine enough for the Navy. Any further time spent goes toward filling your own holds. (holds will be full within a week's time, if you don't wish to mine the full deposit)
>>
>>19230900
Let's mine the whole deposit if possible. The adamantium we can't store should be sold to Captain Beriaun. Even if she can't pay us too well, gaining her favour could be quite valuable.
>>
>>19230900
Might as well fully mine the deposit.

After a month, we'll be free to return the Sisters' crew and we'll be able to keep a little adamantium for our own uses on top of the amount we provide to the Navy ships.
>>
>>19230930
Indeed. This should go a long way to alleviate any suspicions she might have as to where our loyalties lie.
>>
>>19230900
So if I understand you right, we have 4 weeks. 2 weeks are taken up mining for the Navy. 1 week will be taken filling our own holds. Leaves us with 1 week. I say we spend that week continuing to mine, and give the excess to the navy. WE could use their goodwill.
>>
>>19230986
4 weeks worth of Adamantium

2 weeks worth is required by the Navy ( sent to ships that need it as its produced)
1 weeks worth = ship is full
1 weeks worth = "you could mine it and sell it immediately to the Navy"
>>
>>19230986
Possibly more importantly, if big boss whatever-his-name-is Mechanicus leader decides to make a play for the sector, the more resources the other Imperial forces in the region have the better.
>>
>>19231043
Alright, let's do it!
>>
>>19231043

>>
oh, and technically you guys don't have to remain with 'Heavenly Forge' during the mining. The Navy will keep the damaged ships in escort around it for the duration of the mining operation.

The Navy Captains also offered to escort it to Serentus if you must attend to business elsewhere.

'Forge' is quite clear of anything that would give the Navy any cause to trouble you, as the SOBs are technically registered as a humanitarian force that was traveling with you to provide medical care for the civilian crew that is training for asteroid mining upon your factory ship.

your best bet for a pirate crew is, as always, Tortuga.

If you'd like to get a non-pirate crew, your best bet (for a mining vessel) would be either Jtusti (one jump 'above' Serentus) or the main agri world of Xapsieh system.
>>
>>19231275
Question: When are we supposed to meet back up with Gruuman to hnd over the plasma core engine thingy timey-wimey device?
>>
>>19231326
Your current plot is to disguise the delivery as material for repairs to the battlecruiser (thus, the mining)
>>
>>19231357
So.... the plasma core isn't going to be used to repair the battlecruiser? Cause that's what I thought they were doing but *shrugs* whatevs.
>>
>>19231319

ohhh, Jtusti II looks like a promising place to aquire new crew... and salvage stuff from the hives... it shouldn't be 'that' dangerous, hanging around a dying star...
>>
>>19231319
> Xapsieh system
best choice presumably the fleeing imps took everything of value
>>
>>19231319
Seems to me like Jtusti II would be a great place to pick up a crewmen.

I'm sure the scum of the underhive wouldn't object to serving under a pirate captain, and when joining our crew is the only alternative to dying in a supernova, we probably wouldn't have to pay them very much.
>>
>>19231451
>we probably wouldn't have to pay them very much.

>>
I think we'd be best off going to Tortuga, it's relatively close, unlikely to explode, and probably easier to actually FIND recruits in, given the fact that, well, fucking underhives. Also, probably not all that great an idea to fill our ship with underhive scum.

pay for crew is negligible, really. It is assumed that they take a small cut of whatever you sell or capture.

Until you get to having roughly four cruiser's worth of crew, there will be no impact at all for crew shares/pay. Once you hit that rough number, you'll lose 1 wealth from loot gained during raids.
>>
>>19231526
Once we have 4 cruiser's worth of crew we'll be getting more than enough loot/encounter to not mind losing 1 to crew.
>>
>>19231526
how many crusers worth of crew will our hidden base require?
also, if we recruit from jtusti II, our secret system 'Hermosa Sound' is one jump away...
>>
>>19231613
We'd still need to rendezvous with our factory ship and deliver the drive components to Magos Grumman in Serentus before we headed off to start our facility in the hidden system.

Also, did we ever come up with a good name for the system?
>>
>>19231613
That's not our secret system, that's one we haven't been to and have no idea what is there. We could jump in and find ourself facing Dark Eldar. Probably not a good idea to try it while we are operating on a timer.

Also, I'd like to raise the point that there is in fact a precedent for a whole bunch of underhive gangs jammed into an enclosed space, with rich and powerful officials above.
It's called Necromunda.
And as awesome as Necromunda is, I'd rather not have it on our ship.
>>
>>19231657
could we load them into boarding missiles and turn enemy ships into necromunda then?

>>19231625
i just thought that having fresh crew, we could use that as their trial by fire... eventually we are going to end up with vets, even if we have to kill off half a systems worth of green recruits to do it...
although something tells me that we will eventually run the system out of recruits...
>>
After depositing Athe securely in her bunk, you head to your ship's bridge. Kelly and the head navigator, Teris, look to you as you enter. "Set a course for the Jtusti system. We're gathering a proper crew for 'Forge'."

Both women look at eachother, then back at you, their eyes growing wide in shock. "We're going to do what?" querries Teris.

"Captain, are you going to recruit underhivers... and put them in a metal box in space?" Kelly's tone is quite... irritating. "Captain... Aren't you worried about putting members of opposing gangs together on the ship?"

"They will adapt or be left to die." The questioning of your plan annoys you greatly.

"Captain, humans are not so cut and dry..." sighs Teris. "You've heard of Necromunda, right? Wouldn't it be safer to buy some slaves in Tortuga and offer them freedom in exchange for service?"

>FUCK YOU I'M THE CAPTAIN

well, we shall use this 'gang rivalry' to encourage production compotition, the best producers get the higher rewards.
however, she does have a point if we are making weapons and ammo... fine, get some slaves from tortuga, though we should take one gang from jtusti, to use as shock troops...
>>
>>19231743
They're probably right. We tend to suck at this whole "dealing with people thing" so we ought to go with their advice.

That said... I have a vision of kidnapping thousands of underhive scum from their doomed world and oppressing the fuck out of them North Korea style, complete with a ridiculous cult of personality centered around us, and giving Advi permission for unlimited servitor experimentation on them. The flesh is weak!

But that's probably a bad idea. I guess it'll have to be Tortuga.
>>
>>19231743
Normally Tortuga would be the place to go. But now that we seem to be under Naval scrutiny, as well as on the jog for the Sisters and Gruuman, I'd hate for us to be known visitors to that system. Such could only bring misfortune on ourselves or our benefactors.

That being said, you may have a point. We do not need the Heavenly Forge turning into just another hive battle for them. We either recruit from one gang or we find another source.

>>19231825
The idea is to not get spotted going there. Besides, Grumman and the Sisters already know we are a pirate.
Also, any gang that would have enough members to crew an entire ship would probably just take over the bloody thing, and we really don't need that.
>>
"You are not paid to think, nor second guess my orders, Navigator. And you, Kelly... What -do- you do on my ship?"

Both women fumble for apologies, but you silence them with a raised mechandendrite.

"You may both continue to think and provide alternate plans when my... views conflict with the reality of humanity's nature. So long as such things are free. I will not be accepting charges for such information. Set course for Tortuga, then."

Teris nods and moves toward the Navigator's dias, while Kelly lingers. "Captain, Athe has been educating me on the finer points of trade and negotiations since I joined your crew... I believe I am capable of handling the position of Senechal, if you'll allow it."

I say we work on servoskulls!

Give her the chance to prove herself on Tortuga. If she passes, she's got the job.

>1D100 for travel
Not from me.

>projects for the journey? (roughly 3-4 days)
Get started on the first few prosthetics for our wounded armsmen.

well kelly, you wish to become my senechal? join me in my quaters and we shall see if you have what it takes.
run some basic trade questions by her, such as how much ammo should we get under x, y, and z conditions, show us her compitence in negotiation... if she passes, a celebraory drink, if not, looks like it's back to the text books...

during our journey, we should continue examining those harliquin stone things...

And as usual, we're too busy harassing our officers to get anything productive done during travel.

"Prove yourself in Tortuga and you have the position."

Kelly smiles before you excuse yourself and change into your slightly-less fancy custom robe. No reason to get the finer corset's fine details be sullied by the unguents and oils of your toil. For three days you study the details of the paralyzed armswoman's injuries, comparing your various theories against the realities of her injuries. By the time your ship reaches Tortuga, you have several simple versions of the augmentations half-constructed but prepared for testing, perhaps you should send Kelly in search of something to use for that.

>sorry folks, calling it a bit early tonight due to a long day and early morning tomorrow.
>Usual Q&A
>anything you folks would like to have Kelly search for in Tortuga?
>Next thread will be Monday @ 7:30-8:00 PM EST, alternate day/time is TUESDAY @ 7:30-8:00 PM EST (unsure of my schedule next week)
>any ideas by archive readers or thought up over the weekend can be sent to machinespiritpq@gmail.com, should you care to do so.
