You are Thol of the Lolua Nomads, last of your tribe and date of Princess Tessa of Vanthania.

Currently, your party consists of Eames, the Settehen novicer caster, Siobhan, the Thustrish princess and druid, and Cu, the worldy but Sersipan-raised guardsman.

You were continuing your journey towards Homme with the intentions of uncovering the mystery behind your tribe's death and your own destiny, when you and your party stopped at the Vanthania capital of Vol Itolstein, a city the likes of which you have never seen before. Your intentions were to stop in town, perhaps do a bit of shopping, pick up Silver Guin, the magic duelist, and leave shortly after.

However, you (or rather Siobhan) were summoned by King Edgreiss for a royal greeting. Whilst there, you met his High Council, his daughter and son and some old man he called his friend. You also made plans to appear at Princess Tessa's twelfth birthday party, and have offered/been coerced into taking the first dance with her. But that's not til tomorrow, nor is your rendezvous with Guin.

As the sun descends a little faster down the night sky, you split up from your party. Cu is taking Siobhan to the Gathering Tree, a Druidic place of worship built into a giant tree, and Eames is heading for the magic colleges, curious as ever. You, however, have just made your way into the Alchemist's College, a Guild run establishment that, as the name implies, teaches alchemy.

You find yourself in a large, solemn looking hallway. Polished wood and the high ceiling makes every step audible, several doorways lead into long, windowed halls full of doors and turns, two staircases rise high above you to two more floors, and before you is a reception area. A woman sits behind the raised surface, scribbling on one of the many pages stacked before her.

Aged eyes turn up to you, peering over her gold rimmed glasses as you. For a woman so prim, in a rigid, navy dress and her grey hair pulled up in a tight ball that almost looks painful, no doubt your appearance is something of an anomaly.

"Yeees?" Her voice is surprisingly deep, seeming to rise slowly up along her throat.

If she asks if we're an alchemists tell her that we are.

Also, we shouldn't really be spending our time here. We should prepare for the dance, we need some tutelage from Siobhan or someone else. I don't want us to make an ass out of ourself.

"Well, then... if you're a registered alchemist, you already have the permit to use and study the materials on offer from the Guild. I assume you mean that you want a permit to sell your products."

She sighs, reaching beneath her desk and pulling out a rather heavy tome. Clearly you are not the first alchemist to up and appear with his eyes on the money.

"Well, then, just put your signature here and I'll see what I can do."

She opens the tome to the first page, where a blank line awaits. Much like the book at the gates, as soon as you touch quill to paper, your signature, and that same pattern of burn marks appear. Then the pages begin to flip all by themselves. She turns the tome back in her direction as page after page spill over until it finally stops.

Glancing down, you can see your signature amongst many others. It also seems to have quite a bit of writing after it, but you can't make it out. Especially as she pulls it closer to herself.

"Well... you've only been a member of the Guild for a week, Mr... of the Lolua. In what capacity do you intend to serve as a member of the Guild? I can see you've only purchased the beginner's text... what alchemy do you know?"

"I can brew potions with relative ease, though I know only beginners potions at this moment. But than can change when I can afford to buy recipes for more advanced ones."

"Are there any requirements I must meet to be granted the permit?"

Not sure what she means.
"I intent to travel far and wide, if during my travels I discover something that can advance the Alchemy further, I will certainly bring it up to the guild. Except for that, I'm not sure how else I can serve unless complying to the Law and studying the Alchemy counts as serving."

"Potions, hm?" She draws her fingertip over the text following your name. "Well, you haven't caused any trouble so far, apparently. If you simply wish to sell the produce you make, I'm sure we can arrange something or other. Certainly, I don't see the trouble in letting a young novice like yourself funding his own learning."

She pulls out a drawer, where a small, square slip of red paper, decorated in a pattern of a circle, containing smaller circles inside and some script you find illegible. She places the square over your signature and, taking the quill, dots her own ontop. It seems to burn for a moment, cinders travelling along the lines, before the signature disappears.

"This will allow you to sell your produce in any town or city, so long as you're not encroaching on the territory of another Guild-approved Alchemist's Imporium. If it's in the same town as a script merchant, that's fine. Worry not, they're not as widely spread as you might think. You're still not allowed to sell any recipes or texts published by the Guild, and we will know if you try. If you do find some research worth turning in, we are always open to purchasing said information and, if it turns out you have a knack for it, we even offer grants for further research."

She holds the red slip out towards you, a cordial smile on her lips.

"Will that be all, sir?"

The prim older woman stands from her desk, and leans over, gesturing to the circles containing the runic text.

"Here is a list of the towns and cities that have an Emporium. I know it's not easily read, but if the owner, or the legislator, that is, I, scores a quill over the parchment..."

And she does so. Once again, you see a pattern of cinders rise in her signature. Not only that, but some of the characters in the circle glow, too.

"And there you have it, you can see that you are currently in the territory of an Emporium, and you also have quick proof that you are one of the two permitted to have a copy of this. If you lose your copy, you can purchase a replacement from one of our offices for 1700 yee."

She returns to her seat, offering you one more smile as she turns back to the mountains of documents on her table.

"We of the Guild wish you the best of luck in your future endeavours."

Anywho, you leave the college after all is said and done. The sun is starting to get lower in the sky and you can't see the carriage you took anywhere on the road. However, there is a smaller one, a single horse carriage, waiting outside the college. As you approach, the young man standing by the horse straightens up. He wears the same robes as Shepherd Berram and the other Druid who drove you here.

"Guardsman Thol. I am Lewil, tasked to take you where you wish to go. The Green Maiden and her other guardsmen have left for your current residence. Please, step inside."

He opens the door for you. As soon as you step on, it closes behind you and the carriage begins to move, rocking you off your feet and onto your seat. Glancing out the window, you can that you are turning on the cobbles, headed further into the Culture District, rather than back to the Noble's District.

The driver does not answer. The door is, indeed, locked, and the windows seem a tad too small for you to get out without dislocating a shoulder.

"Honestly, Lewil, I told you to -gently- turn, not frighten our guest to death."

Speaks a voice from inside the carriage. Yet there seems to be no-one there. That is until you see some odd goings on in the seat across from you. The air seems to distort, as if a mist is suddenly arising then clearing shortly after. As it clears, rather than an empty seat, you are left with an accompanying traveller.

You recognise him. It's hard not to, what with his stark bald head, blue eyes and features that seem sharp as a blade yet soft and peaceful like a cliff of limestone.

"Well met, Thol of the Lolua." Speaks Sir Emiel Ystregard, Advisor to the King.

The man chuckles, his hands folded in his lap. His age is rather hard to guess due to the presence of only a few, but very deep, lines in his features and he doesn't particularly carry himself like an old man, or a young one.

"For one who carries such a barbarous weapon, you are a rather calm minded young man, aren't you? Tell me, young Nomad. What are you doing out of the Reach before your time?"

Then tell him what happened to our tribe but be vague about our reasons for travel. We could just say that we were helping the man who saved us by accompanying his friend's son on the road, how we became good friends and continued to ravel together till we met Siobhan and Cu who hired us as guards after we proved that we can be trusted.

He waves his hand slowly through the air, as if snatching the question you just asked.

"Worry not, Thol of the Lolua. It is not my intention to bring you harm. But you are a curiosity. Whilst Lady Voxellus may be charged with holding the peace in Higher Vol Itolstein, I am the one who protects and informs the King on all matters that require his judgement. You are an anomaly. I know the ways of your people and, as such, I decided to hear what you had to say."

He rests easier in his seat, his hands slipping into the loose sleeves of his robe, joining in the center. Leaning over, he glances out the window as you travel along the edge of the second level. Looking over the city, you see an odd looking sector, indeed. Between two of the sectioning walls, a great, gaping hole in the Earth rests. There are scaffolds and contraptions of chain, stone and wood all down the cliffs and an abundance of smoke rising from that District.

"Although, should you be asked tomorrow night, I would perhaps leave out the colour of the particular flames that murdered your people. There are some here who would misuse such information, should they know what it represents."

He shoots you a knowing glance.

You seem to have come full circle around the second level, because you recognise these fancy houses and the fancy carriages travelling down the fancy, laid roads.

"Well.. we are nearing your accomodation. So... allow me one more question." He sits up from his seat and sits upright. Yet still he carries the expression of a mother nursing a babe. "I know that you are not truly a guardsman of the Green Maiden. So I ask, do you intend to follow her into Rooksland?"

Finally, the carriage comes to a slow stop.

The 'Druid' Lewil appears as the side again, unlocking and opening the carriage door for you. Emiel remains seated, but offers his hand to you.

"I hope we can use discretion in relating this conversation. I do not say it lightly when I tell you danger could come to either of us should the wrong ears get a hold of it."

After you step out, the carriage makes way again. You are standing before the gate to a single-floored, but rather expansive abode of white stone, perched somewhere in the middle of the rising Noble District. There is no carriage here, but as you glance through the window of the home, you see Eames in the kitchen, making use of an actual stove. The delight is palpable inside.

"Sir Thol!," you hear from beyond the gate. Siobhan appears from around the corner of the house, wearing a wreath of large, white roses in her hair. "Learn anything of use?"

"Well, I'm glad to hear you made some good use of your time. You should have seen the Gathering Tree, though. It was magnificent. Not as much space outside as the one back home, but my goodness, there were so many monasteries inside. I had no idea there would be so many Druids in Vol Itolstein, but they have literally hundreds of rooms in there!"

Then, as you sheepishly remind her that you would like dance instruction, she grins again. Still remembering how you huffed when Cu made fun of you.

"I would be glad to, Sir Thol, but I'm afraid I don't know much about Vanthania dance after all.. Eames showed me a few steps, though... perhaps we can learn together after we have our meal. As for behaviour... you carry yourself well, most of the time. But yes, I suppose I can help you. If you come with me to pick out a dress tomorrow. Something to go with this..."

She straightens the wreath on her head.

"That won't be necessary, Sir Thol. Just you will be fine. Besides, I have a surprise for you, anyway."

Her lips take on a coy little curve, before the window opens. The usual long-haired, bespectacled summoner leans out the window, glancing to you both.

"Good to have you back, Thol. Come in! I've prepared quite the feast, if I do say so, myself." He smiles proudly, before popping back in. As you turn to make your way inside, you feel Siobhan's fingers close on your wrist. Only momentarily. As you turn back, already she has tucked her hands behind her back. Her eyes don't quite meet yours.

"If you please... do not tell Cu or Eames? I don't want them to come to any rash conclusions. I've simply told them I'm going to get a dress myself."

"Thank you." She beams and nods, gesturing for you to go ahead. She takes a moment as you move in, taking off her wreath and no doubt quelling the red that threatens to dash her cheeks. As Eames sets up the plates on the table, Cu stares at the decorations of the house with a certain confused intensity. Indeed, you've never seen so many easily broken things in your life. Soft chairs, tables with legs so curved and oddly shaped that they probably couldn't sustain the weight of a single person, plates that are, for some reason, suspended on drawers.

At least the dinner table is sturdy enough. And Eames wasn't kidding. A meal of mashed potatoes, roasted potatoes seasoned with all manner of delicious smelling herbs, some watery, dark sauce that you've never seen before, slices of tender rabbit meat, and that same kind of flavoured bread you had before, all heaped on your plate.

"I thought we may as well eat like nobles if we're going to live like nobles for a night." The chef puffs up his chest, taking a seat at one end of the table. Siobhan sits across from him, leaving you and Cu to take the other two sides.

"So... Thol," Eames begins again as he cuts into the excellently cooked meat. "Courting a Princess, huh?"

You panic for a moment and briefly flirt with the idea of jumping out the window, but you realise Eames is referring to Princess Tessa.

"Oh, it's not so surprising," Eames replies, pouring a pitcher of wine into some rather pretty goblets. You're not sure what use these goblets have for gems in them, though. "Your people are rather well accepted back home in Settehem as well. No doubt that was why Mr. Nowell sent you off with me in the first place."

He hands the goblets around, passing one to you. Siobhan furtively sips between small portions of food. After you mention the dancing lessons planned, Cu clears his throat.

"Actually... I may have been... rash in my, urm, mocking. I suppose. I may, urm. Need lessons, too. I've never been much of a dancer, and apparently, we're all expected at the party tomorrow night. I don't know if I'm even going to dance with someone but... if a challenge arises, I cannot let it pass."

He gives a stout nod before digging into his food. You do the same. And soon wonder how you have never tasted this sauce before. It's savoury, it's sweet, it soaks into the potatoes to make a delicious, moist treat and drips from the meat, giving it a rich texture.

"Well, it's decided then." Eames holds back a chuckle for the sake of not getting punched by Cu again. "We'll have a little lesson tonight. We'll be switching partners to make sure you all get the timing individually, so Cu, Thol, don't go getting too cosy with eachother."

Your blow hits Cu hard, and he almost dies, battering his fist against his chest. Eventually, a chunk of meat lands in his goblet.

"Gods be, Nomad, whose side be you on?!" He picks the meat out from the goblet and, not one to waste a good piece of rabbit, especially not when its soaked in wine, he eats it again.

You all finish your meal, full with such rich food and sweet meat that for a while, no-one is able to move from their table. So instead, you lounge around for a while. Eames glances over his Fireball scroll, yet again. Siobhan pours herself a second glass of wine. Cu's chair creaks for help.

"You know... I've realised that we're now half-way towards Homme. And the second half of the journey will be even quicker, now that we have a proper two-horse carriage," Siobhan muses as she swirls her goblet around, green eyes half-lidded as they watch its movement. "It hasn't really been very long, at all... but I feel like we might've been travelling for months."

The vertically challenged guardsman sighs in reply.

"True. Pains me to admit, but you two are doing well by my records. So... here's a toast. To Princess Tessa. For giving us an excuse to celebrate just once before we hit the road and eventually scatter off like dust in the wind."

He raises his goblet, as do the rest of you.

"Hmm... well... I suppose I should, hm?" He clears the room for a moment, soon returning with the scroll, which he hands over to you.

"Oh, I was thinking of tomorrow. Our plan." he leans towards you, glancing over his shoulder at Cu. "Siobhan is going dress shopping in the morn, but she should be back by noon. All four of us should travel to the Commerce District. Then, you and Cu split off from us to meet Silver Guin in that tavern, whilst I'll ask Siobhan to help me look for an incitement rod. Then... whilst we're looking, I'll ask her. Sound good? Oh, also, do you want one?"

Then, as you mention his intentions, and the mechinations that might be behind it, his complexion deepens somewhat, and his brow takes on that grim expression once more. He may not be blood related, but you can certainly see that Eames got certain traits from the Captain.

The man is happily whistling, but surely he should've been done with the dishes by now. And why is he making pouring gestures? And drinking gestures? And with that, he pops out. You have about enough time for two attempts at learning the Summon Wolf scroll before everyone gathers again. Once again, it's a layer of circles overlapped in circles. And it's one of the more complicated ones, like the horse. So it won't be as easy to learn as the cat.

He screams, as flame bursts outwards from his palm, spreading before compacting into a ball of yellow hot energy that flies high into the air. For a moment, it lights up the darkening skies, before fizzling out.

You are so surprised, the wolf ends up fizzling out, too, and you fall flat on your face. But you are soon picked up by Eames, whose triumph echoes off you until you are both up, standing proud and laughing like true men. Then Cu comes out with three cups of wine.

A few minutes later, Siobhan, wearing her short sleeved tunic top and a long, somewhat hip hugging, skirt, appears at the door.

"You've started without me...?"

But this is not the dance of Vanthania. This is three inebriated men dancing around in a circle.

Four cold drinks of water later, you have all sobered up considerably. For there can be no loss of focus in this next task.

The night sky has finally descended over Vol Itolstein, and the streets below and above glow with the soft hum of a thousand lamps. You, Cu and Siobhan stand in a line on the grass behind the house. Eames had shed his coat and rolled his sleeves up, currently pacing up and down before all of you.

"Alright. First thing's first. We don't have music. But Vanthanian dance moves in a rhythm. I'll be able to count it. First, memorise. One-two-three-four, one-two-three-four, one-two-three-four, one-two-threeeeee."

He steps in a circle with an invisible partner, counting his steps, one in, one out, one in, one out, then, on the final three count, he bends forward, rather low.

"This is how we lead. Now... I'll use Siobhan as an example. Please, Siobhan, if you would. For this exercise, just step on my feet."

She does so, after some trepidation. He guides a hand to his elbow, the other, he raises, touching his fingertips to hers, and his other hand on her lower back. He begins again. Once again, in a circle, he steps in towards some vague center, then out from it. Then on the last third count, he dips her low. Siobhan's head falls back, until its upside down, staring blanky at you and Cu as her hair falls freely, exposing much neck. Scandalous.

Before you have a chance to say no, you feel the shorter man's hand on your back, his fingertips waiting for the touch of yours.

"... be brave, Nomad." He looks up at you with the resolve of a knight in battle.

Eames begins the count.

"1-2-3-4..."

This will require FOUR ROLLS, all 1d10.
For dexterity, you need a 5.
For agility, you need a 4.
For perception, you need a 6.
And a fourth, charisma roll. You don't need anything for it... it's just nice to have.

Needless to say, you're pretty good for a first timer. Despite the fact that Cu's supposed to the lead, you do most of the stepping before he does. You deftly step to and fro. You're not looking particularly flash, as you're clearly focusing quite a bit, but you manage to avoid making any mistakes. Then, when the time for the dip comes, you even perform that role perfectly.

Only...

You were focusing so much on the steps, you forget to look away and soon you end up meeting Cu's big, beautiful brown eyes.

"What deviance is this?!"

The guardsman drops you suddenly, and you land on the grass rather unceremoniously. Eames and Siobhan are now laughing raucously.

"Okay, okay... let's ignore Thol's proposal and switch partners. He needs to learn how to lead, after all."

You get up, dusting the grass from your backside, when Siobhan steps over and, a small smile on her lips, she offers her hands forward, touching one to your shoulder, and meeting fingers with fingers again.

What was it. A missed step? Did your fingers slip from Siobhan's? You are still doing it perfectly, so it can't be that.

You begin to look about yourself, thinking you might have dropped something on the ground. Your body is doing fine without you, but you can't help but be incredibly distracted. And by the time you realise you weren't even carrying anything to begin with, you've already dipped and now you are standing up straight. Siobhan looks at you with a strange, distant glare.

So do Cu and Eames.

"Well... I think we've all got it. The dancing part, at least... Thol, are you...? Nevermind..."

Something messed up your perfect dance. Something...

He starts with the regular dance with Siobhan, who is playing her part very well, right down to the dip. Then, he speeds the count, and leads her in somewhat different dance, only their fingertips touch as they stare into eachother's eyes and skip in a perfect circle. Then, at the final seven, he spins Siobhan in place and flits off towards you. By the time he meets you, he's a little out of breath from the dancing and counting.

"... and... then, the lead stops the woman from dancing by dipping her one last time. That's how the song ends. Ready to try?"

He takes up dancing arms with you. THIS IS THE LAST STAGE. I will take only the first set of four rolls.

In the four step, you lead Eames with the same gusto you started with last time. You remind yourself that you didn't drop anything, and that you are great at this. Infact, you begin to believe you are great at this, and it shows as you lead with confidence, grace and power. If Eames were a woman, he would no doubt be swooning right now. Had you not stepped on his foot three times during.

"That's okay, Thol..." He speaks with a wince. "Doing, well,2-3-4, 2-3!"

You dip, and luckily, do not share a moment of gazing into eachother's eyes with Eames. Then the finale begins. You manage it perfectly, skipping with all the majesty of a horse alongside another horse that's not quite as beautiful as it. The third 7 comes and you release Eames with a twirl that will probably infuse his blood with some of your Tiger Spirit for generations.

Then, you prance towards Siobhan, who is similarly, but not quite as beautifully, spinning. Except, you are too focused on your own excellent footwork, you don't even really see her and end up prancing right past her.

But you got this! You know you can save it! And so, with all the poise and vulnerable skill of a swift weaving through the trees of an elaborate similie, you twirl and head back for Siobhan. You can't dip her normally, now, you've gone too far for that. So instead, you dip her forward. Your hand places just scant inches beneath her bust as you stop her, and stand behind her. Reaching down, you tuck the fingers of your other hand beneath her knee and dip forward, lower than you've ever dipped before.

Panicking, Siobhan manages to balance herself from falling by outstretching her arms, and lettiing you hold her as she lifts to the tips of the toes on one foot, letting the other stretch out right behind her.

When you finally right yourself, and set her on her feet, you don't even have to look to know that her face is as red as her hair. And now Eames and Cu are staring too.

Eames is in blank shock. Cu's lips quiver. He raises his hands and begins the slow clap. Siobhan wanders off into the garden in an attempt to find a chair as Eames taps his finger to his lips.

"... a new dance... yes... a new dance has been born today."
