You'll have to pardon me if this thread's being seen for the 100th time. Anyway...I'm here from /a/ on a (quasi-)scientific mission to see if we can figure out how the Ordo Hereticus would classify an Eva unit; exotic Godmachine, or a mammoth Defiler in need of purging?Sure, they're controlled by human pilots, but the Evas themselves also prisons for host human souls driven halfway to madness. Plus they effectively possess unregulated psyker abilities; projection of defensive fields based on the human soul, ability summon large quantities of matter seemingly from the warp, etc.
If you need to ask it's probably heretical.
>>19137603I suppose you're right. Still, I'll leave the thread open for any radical interpretations.
How would they see it if they were dead before they knew it?AT-field, that's what. I bet that with a good pilot Eva could withstand exterminatus. Especially one with S2 organ.
>>19137618Interpretation begets thought.Thought begets choice.Choice begets heresy.
Mechanicus would steal them and exterminatus the hell out of everything that knew. They have the best toys. Now fuck off out of fa/tg/uys terrority weeaboo
>>19137623Maybe, but I think you'd need one hell of a pilot to withstand the force of cyclonic torpedoes, virus bombs and the like.
>>19137666Technically, an AT field can resist anything.
They're living creatures with shit bolted to them. The only question is, are they sentient? If no, fine. If yes, HERESY! because they're not human. You *might* consider them daemonic, given the whole Adam/Lilith thing and how you define them.
Daemon possesed soul sucking psyker titanMary Sue machines that run on teenage angst piloted by Mary Sue teenagersDouble heresy is not enough
>>19137674Which depends on the pilot in practice.
>>19137688They're too flawed to be Mary Sues.
Clearly heresy. The holy Emprah on his glorious throne didn't ordain them, or create them. They are the work of heretics and xenos, working in tandem against the glory of the Emprah.Chaos Xenos.
>>19137688>I don't know what Mary Sue means so I'm going to use it for any character I don't like.Fuck off and die in a fire shitwit.
>>19137652>doesn't know that /tg/ created Adeptus Evangelion, a somewhat popular homebrew game which uses dark heresy rules to play an evangelion game.
>>19137726To wit: Xenoheresy. A term which doesn't get nearly enough usage in His name.
An Eva is a giant person-god-alien-thing covered with metal plating and containing the tortured soul of a man. While totally the shit Dark Mechnicus and Dark Eldar would picrelated to in glee, it's not the sort of stuff the Loyal Mechanicus usually dabbles in.Except that Biologis guys have a tendency to get up to stuff like this when they think no one's looking. And most of the time it gets burned when they decide to show someone their new pet kill machine. So I'm going to roll with 'No, you should never have made this. Burn it all and pretend it never happened. Don't mention it to the Inquisition, this is purely an internal affair.'
If the Empire can't actually make X, X is heretical.
>>19137776>EmpireHeresy.
>>19137726As far as anyone knows, their creation was purely a human endeavor, and they're lobotomized thoroughly to make sure they don't do exactly what the Imperium forbids.
Okay, I've never seen the show, and I don't like anime at *all* with the exception of the stuff by Miyazaki, but you guys are making this sound like something I'd actually watch...
>>19137791It's the /tg/ version of replacing your with you're
>>19137802Oh, good to know.>>19137798On my home board these words would see me burned for heresy, but I'd advise checking out the newly-made movies first if you are interested.
>>19137798it's not quite as interesting as it sounds. The focus is less on the giant killer robots and more on the angsty 14 year old pilots dealing with deep psychological issues that minors are completely inept at dealing with. For example: "My giant robot just killed by best friend by crushing him in its grasp AND I COULD FEEL IT AS IF I HAD DONE IT MYSELF"or"I need to become an adult immediately so that I can prove to my dead mother who committed suicide and tried to take me with her that I'm not a child that she can just ignore, and then she'll love me even though she can't because she's dead."and then they do fucked up shit like slit their wrists and masturbate onto comatose girls. It's pretty messed up.
>>19137798There's a reason why this show is a classic. See, in most anime, being a pilot is fucking awesome. Bitchin' robot, hot girls, what's there not to like? Well...Evangelion turned that on it's head. You really, really don't want to be a pilot. Seriously. The 'machine' is barely understood by the people who've made it, and the enemies are like horrors right out of the infinite nightmares of the Warp.Outside of the pilot, Evangelion is fundamentally a show about *suffering*. The whole series is a death spiral, and things keep getting worse. There's a very skewed element to the series, as it's viewed through the protagonist's rapidly disintegrating sanity...And everyone around him is as flawed and ugly inside as he believes himself to be.
>>19137835My favorite story arc is that one character has an emotional breakthrough shortly before an apparent death. When she resurfaces, she's like a horrid demon come to undo everything that came before.Let's not forget the nebulous and thoroughly sinister conspiracy in the background, which actually has it's shit together.
That's definitely heresy, Onii-chan.
>>19137835>>19137838Same anon who hates anime... not sure if want...It sounds, interesting to be sure, like Black Swan with robots or something, but I gotta ask, are the translations to English decent? That's prevented me from getting even into ones I see and think "mite b kewl".
>>19137759>doesn't realise that's pretty weeaboo
>>19137838Replace every instance in this post of "Pilot" with "Author" and you have why I don't like this series. It's the flailing "artistic" whining of a depressed asshole who hates his fans.Watch the movies instead, they were made after he was properly medicated and quit being a giant pussy.
>>19137861And then [spoilersdontworkontgbutseriouslymajorspoilers]the illuminati sends in the death squads and murder absolutely fucking everybody before the protagonist murders the ego of everyone on Earth and turns humanity into a collective conscious sea of orange goop.[/spoilersdontworkontgbutseriouslymajorspoilers]
>>19137873Yeah, this series has been subbed, dubbed and so on. The quality has been fairly good. You should probably watch NGE at least once. It's one of those shows that has to be experienced at some point, if only to see what all the fuss was about.
>>19137873The dub is meh, good for it's time, but hasn't aged well. The subs used on the Platinum release are quite good though.
>>19137887and as batshit as that sounds, that's not even doing it justice, as you skipped the craziest bit.
If converting Alien-weaponry into something humans can use is considered Heresy, then an EVA is as well.
>>19137907That's because I don't even know how to begin to describe it to someone who hasn't seen it.

>>19137887He also beats off over the face of a comatose girl, and somehow makes it look beta as fuck.
>>19137798You're going to have to slog through a LOT of typical anime dross in order to do it.Here's the gist of it: Billions upon billions of years ago, there existed a god-tier species of aliens. They created all manner of "Terraforming Entities", bio-engineered godlike creatures that could generate life wherever they went. Said life is apparently some sort of one-off superbeing variety. Lets call them Angels. The Precursors packaged them in giant rocks and launched them into the universe. Packaged with each rock was a Panic Button device, a Lance that could disable/destroy the angel, as it could pierce an AT field. What these things have, in this universe, is Souls. As a quantifiable energy source within their bodies. The Angels can freely do matter/energy conversions, thus regenerating whenever they want (energy->matter->flesh=HEALED). They can also generate a force field made up of their own literal Personal Space. Aside from that, they're very diverse; some of them exist in additional realities, typical eldritch abomination stuff. Now then, entities like this are...territorial. No planet was supposed to have more than one Super-being on it. Earth wound up with two: Adam and Lillith. Lilith's type of life was either very different from Adam's, or she was somehow damaged in the impact. Regardless, instead of spawning one-off god-tier beings, she inocculated the planet with conventional life. Adam remained in stasis in the South Pole until some jackasses fucked about with his moon and triggered a fuckhuge disaster.
>>19137929Probably because he's begging for her to save him before, and crying during.
>>19137929What I liked was that the protagonist wasn't emo: This isn't 'finding my place in the world' teenage angst. This is a kid who is slowly but surely going around the bend, like CoC Investigator. We get to see his mind turning to goo, under all the horrors he's witnessed, and it's wonderful.
>>19137929That's because it IS beta as fuck. It's him giving in to his own weakness and basically running away, something the series repeatedly tells us is a BAD thing. "I mustn't run away" would more literally be translated from the Japanese as "To run away is no good." and that is VERY true in this series. Running away only ever makes things worse.
>>19137929Because it is beta as fuck.Alpha's get sucked off and then blow it on her face because they like the way it looks. Or you know, at least get a handjob.>>19137883Booze is proper medication and budget! Errybody clap hands!
>>19137952How one cool dude on /m/ summed up Shinji:
>>19137943Whereas in Rebuild he puts her ass in the kitchen and goes out to cheat on her with stacked American girls.
>>19137883Because clinical depression is "being a giant pussy" and not a serious medical condition.>>19137974Mari is british, dude.
>>19137974I've only watched the original series.
>>19137974There's this theory that Rebuild is basically Shinji's fantasy. It's a reintepretation of existing events, framed to make himself look less bad. The tragedy is that he can't quite visualize himself as a hero, and it just makes things more fucked.
>>19137981You think Japs know the difference?
>>19137942With Adam set loose, it started to spawn embryonic Angels, each one a Eldritch Kaiiju. With another god-tier entity on the planet, they couldn't tolerate it, so their desire was to merge with it; which is why the Precursors kept the damn things separate; otherwise they'd be always merging into some sort of unstable super-thing.Or something. Exactly what the fuck the Angels want to do is rather unclear. Either way, it spells doom for humanity.Anyways, the humans have the body of Lilith at the bottom of their super-secret base. They use Lilith to spawn off their own Angels, which they fit with armor and cybernetic control thingies, basically turning them into giant mecha. BUT, they still need souls to stick in them. Turns out that human souls will do the trick. But then you need somone connected to that soul to control it. Turns out, the progeny of that soul can sync up with the mecha and pilot it. Thus, they need to use the angsty, damaged kids of the test pilots who's souls are in the mechas.
>>19137703Not really.1. Immortal/Indestructible2. Even if destroyed - resurrected3.Their can only be damaged by other Evas, 4. they run on teenage angst and special snowflakeness5. Their origin is demonic/angelicEvangelion/40k crossover is really a very bad idea.Don't know where would they fit. Maybe a really high level Shadowrun campaign. But you would have to drop the angst. Runners have to keep their cool.
>>19137883But he DIDN'T hate his fans. The "he hates his fans" thing is an overreaction to one element of EoE, which is a "fuck you" to the dudes who sent him DEATH THREATS over the ending of the series. If you're such a useless fuckhydrant that you need to send a man death threats over something like that (personally, I actually LIKED EoTV) you really deserve any "fuck you"s you get.
>>19137981He was a giant pussy on top of being depressed. Now he's summarily quit being both.
>>19138009There isn't a famous person alive who hasn't gotten death threats. Shit, there aren't that many anonymous average people who haven't gotten death threats. You get the fuck over it and you move on, you don't create an entire movie as one giant middle finger.
>>19138016You really don't understand the definition of "Clinical Depression" do you?And you probably think that the "Give Ayanami back" scene is awesome too. Here's the thing: In that moment, Shinji IS Gendo. He makes the same "fuck the world, I'm saving her" decision Gendo does, but for even less. Yui was the only person to ever tell Gendo that his life had value, that his existence was meaningful. The only one to ever say to him "I love you". Shinji may or may not have romantic feelings for Rei, but he makes the same level of "fuck the world" decision.>>19138034Only certain elements of the film (the hospital scene and excerpts of the letters flashing onscreen during Instrumentality) were a middle finger actually, the rest was based on their earliest draft of the ending originally intended, the one that they wouldn't have gotten away with even if they hadn't run into budget problems because the censors started to crack down on violence during the show's run.
>>19138007Given their propensity for uncontrolled rampages and otherwise not cooperating with pilots, I still don't think they're perfect.
>>19138002This wasn't their original plan. The ORIGINAL plan was to take out the soul of Lilith and split it. The big part goes into a mecha, the small part goes into a cloned human that could be controlled just like a normal human could; emotional blackmail and so on.The result was a hot but creepy super-autistic girl, the one with the grey pageboy cut you've probably seen on a bajillion weaboo's body pillows. She turned out to be good at piloting, but too passive and "no fucks given" to be very effective at actual combat. Thus, the damaged orphan kids. Also, Shinji in particular is a bad pilot, but if he gets worked up enough, he can cause his EVA and him to go into BERZERKER mode, where it completely ignores all the control/cybernetics, and power requirements (the human-made angels run on electricity), and the pair of them just angst out on their foe.I think. I'm really not sure what the fuck was going on. I'm not an anime fan. Presumably it makes more sense to them.
>>19138053Gendo's plan's only flaw was that it took forever and made him look like an overly dependent asshole. Shinji's in comparison was alpha as fuck.
>>19137993Does this theory account for why Rei and Asuka switched boob sizes?>>19137994Never seen Infinite Stratos?British have bad food.Germans are all order and discipline.French are traps.Chinese have no boobs.Japanese are tsundere.Americans blow everything up.
>>19137929I... wha-a-a-at?>>19137942> You're going to have to slog through a LOT of typical anime drossOh dear...> rest of 19137942Might be cool... but then I read...>"But then you need somone connected to that soul to control it. Turns out, the progeny of that soul can sync up with the mecha and pilot it. Thus, they need to use the angsty, damaged kids of the test pilots who's souls are in the mecha"Oh Christ, that's horrid...Well, I'm pretty sure it's not my thing, but hey, you guys have convinced me of one thing, that anime *can* transcend the really stupid shit that seems so prevalent in the medium (yes, I know, Naruto is possibly the worst example possible, and kind of a low blow, but I hated it long before that).
>>19138091>Oh christ that's horridTIP OF THE MOTHERFUCKING ICEBERG. This is like a mecha anime as done by HP Lovecraft.
>>19138087Well, Asuka's pretty bitchy in the series. Shinji always had a weird connection with Rei. Notice how he gets closer to Rei in the movies?Yeah. My guess is that Kaoru is the only guy who's not being forced to follow the 'script', and is trying to get our hero to love himself.
>>19138102Kaoru just wants Shinji's narrow ass for himself, or did you miss all the homo shit they did before Shinji popped his head off after the five minute freeze-frame with classical music?
>>19138083So running away from reality like a pussy is "alpha as fuck" to you? Seriously? Let me put it this way: You know the plot of Final Fantasy X-2, all that "boohoo my girlfriend is dead so I'm gonna kill the whole world" shit? THAT is what Shinji is doing, before OUT OF NOWHERE IS FUCKING KAWORU with something that vaguely resembles the Lance of Longinus! Shinji didn't have a plan, he was a child throwing a tantrum.
>>19138119In order to get Shinji to love himself, Kaoru realized that he must first convince Shinji that he DESERVES love. The quickest way to do that was to just love him. Some physical contact was a part of that, yeah.
>>19138127Sorry, we just didn't see the same events. I saw a newly emerged man of willpower and conviction stand up and seize the girl from the evil monster, but I guess you can't get an erection unless an Eva character does something stupid and beta, so you rewrote it mentally.
>>19138002>But then you need somone connected to that soul to control it. Turns out, the progeny of that soul can sync up with the mecha and pilot it. Thus, they need to use the angsty, damaged kids of the test pilots who's souls are in the mechas.Think you got that wrong there. The Mecha itself doesn't have a soul, a soul is needed for it to function properly, they used Yui (Shinji's mother) as the first experiment for the EVA, I am not sure if it was intentional or not, but she bonded with the EVA much like Shinji did when he turned into LCL, and she, and her soul stays within there, they needed Shinji to pilot unit 01, or Rei since she's a clone of Yui, because they are closer to Yui's soul than others.Or something like that anyway.
>>19138119I only noticed Shinji gripping Kaoru tightly and using his thumb on Kaoru's head until liquid jetted out everywhere. Then Shinji felt dirty and worthless.
>>19138148I'm pretty sure Kaoru was just a creepy homo who was trying to fuck up Shinji's mind, and part of that was fucking up his ass.
>>19138119Yeah, Kaoru is probably as gay as a barrel of monkeys. But think about it: He's one of the few people who doesn't want Shinji to suffer all the god damned time. Also, he's the literal Angel of Free Will; I can't help but think that he wants Shinji to give this story a happy ending. Which has to start by getting him to stop hating himself.
>>19137578Well Principio Eternus is sort of an exotic Godmachine I suppose.
>>19138148Or, you know, Kaworu was more inscrutable than an Eldar Farseer and gets the same "he's not really bad" treatment that any vaguely attractive character gets from fangirls.I don't hate Kaworu, but I DO hate his legions of rabid fans.
>>19138164I think you're oversimplifying things because you're homophobic. Or your father didn't love you, one of the two.
>>19138171>Principio Eternus
>>19138171To be fair, Titans are probably all manly and gruff and TO WAR! An Evangelion is more like all hellish psychological landscape, filled with screaming faces and half-forgotten childhood terrors.
>>19138152So "I'm taking my ball and going home!" is the behavior of a man?
>>19138168Then he forced him to murder the only person who'd ever showed him any kindness, thus ripping his mind a new asshole.Kaoru is a dick.
>>19138102Odd thing: While Rei is biologically a cone of his mom, psychologically, she's Lilith. So he's really making friends/falling in love with an eldritch god-being that's stuck existing as a human (and doing it very badly.) She's miserable, alone, creepy, and shouldn't fucking exist, but Shinji cares about her. There's almost something heartwarming about that. Also, The thing with Auska's mom is super-creepy. Apparently, souls have "physiology," just like the brain has distinct regions. She survived the early tests, but the bit of her soul designated "Mother" got ripped out, and she was afterwards insane/damaged and incapable of motherly affection. The "doll" thing was probably her soul desperately trying to cobble together some sort of emotional connection, like trying to recover from brain damage. Thus, Auska's awesome Berzerker thing when she realizes that her mom's inside her EVA. actually, its just the chunk that was capable of caring about her. But whichever.
>>19138192"Fuck you; I don't have to deal with your shit." is.
>>19138179I think you'd forgive anyone of anything if they had silver hair and a girlish figure.
>>19138202Well, that was the chunk that she had been missing all her life and was the key to her own personal fulfillment.
>>19138207But that's not what he said.He decided to throw a tantrum and wreck everything because the world wasn't going his way. Evangelion is not TTGL dude. Not even in Rebuild. He ran away from his problems like a child rather than stand and deal with them like a man, something that we know from the original to be a BAD thing.
>>19138002>Or something. Exactly what the fuck the Angels want to do is rather unclear.IIRC, there are supposed to be to types of the planet terraforming things, one type is designed to make creatures with perfect bodies, which is why the angels were so varied, and almost indestructible, and the other would make creatures with sapience, i.e. us.if there was a creature that had both, then it would effectively be god, which is what i think SEELE was trying to do.i think.i dunno, shit was weird.
To offer my own interpretation on Kaworu (in the original series): what he represented was a final attempt by the angels to subvert Shinji's modicum of advancement as a human being, by giving him a source of unconditional love. That was the one thing that Shinji always lacked in his life, and so his incredibly strong reaction to Kaworu's acceptance was natural.
>>19138156That's pretty much what I meant. I don't know, EVAs apparently have Cores, so they must need a soul of some kind in order to function, which had to come from a human. We never saw...what the fuck was inside the Mass-Production EVAs then? Fragments of Kaworu's soul? Hobos?
>>19138002>Or something. >>19138202I'm only skimming these posts as I'm interested but don't want spoilers, but wait, some clone of his mom (an eldritch abomination in disguise) is trying to seduce him?WTF is with this series?! It sounds like Oedipus Rex and Lovecraft started a clubhouse and they invited the scientists from the Godzilla: Final Wars movie.
>>19138238He got his girl back and became God. I'm pretty sure that counts as turning out okay, if Kaworu hadn't fucked it up out of a desire to penetrate him with other long, phallic objects.
>>19138250>We never saw...what the fuck was inside the Mass-Production EVAs then? Fragments of Kaworu's soul? Hobos?Probably Kaworu Clones, since Adam can control any Evangelions.
>>19138185This is (among neighboring pictures) our only canon picture of a Titan's mindscape. It's not friendly even when your predecessor isn't kung fuing mind nids to the death.
>>19138259He's trying to seduce her. Rei is effectively asexual herself.
>>19138259It's complicated. And no, she's not trying to seduce him. Strangely enough, for an anime series, the main character is treated rather realistically: As a pathetic shell of a teenager, he's not exactly romantic fodder. The only people vaguely interested in him are as damaged and fucked up as he is.
>>19138250I always thought they were Rei clones, or something like that. Now that I think about it, I don't have any reason behind that. It just feels appropriate.
>>19138260He would have caused Third Impact, literally fucking the whole world over in the process. It's like nuking the entire Indian subcontinent because the girl you know who you kinda have a bit of a crush on but never said anything to was kidnapped and had her organs stolen. Do you have a right to be mad? Fuck yeah. Do you have the right to nuke the most densely populated place on Earth? Fuck no.
>>19138262The dummy plugs in them said Kaworu Nagisa, so it's pretty clear.
>>19137838Evangelion may have been the first but thereare more fucked up setting now, like Bokurano where the mech feeds on the pilots lifeforce meaning the kid piloting it dies after 24 hours. And what they are fighting against are other kids from paralell universes so each time they win they kill a whole universe.
>>19138294He didn't know he was causing third impact, it was simply a side effect of his overwhelming manliness.
>>19138241But it didn't make creatures with sapience (us). It made shitty single-cell amoebas that took a billion+ years and a bunch of false starts to make something sentient. Humans are not the ultimate culmination of all evolution; we're not the fucking end-product, we're just the latest thing. For another thing, Deep Time buries all. We went from shit-flinging apes to landing on the moon in a million years. The fossil Record has HUGE gaps in it. For all we know, there was a Squid or Raptor or Slaughtering Rat People civilization before us that got wiped out by something. We wouldn't fucking know.Maybe the Angels were...templates. Maybe they were supposed to fight eachother until there was only one left, and then it merges with the source, and spawns an entire lifetype based on itself. So the world could have been populated by giant ever-shifting geometrical floaty things.
>>19138300And all of that exists because Eva was a success. Even if you don't like the show, you have to acknowledge that the reason the whole "postmodern mecha" thing is popular is because it was successful.
>>19137903I have always thought both the sub and dub of Eva were a bit meh. There just seem to be some members of the cast they can't get right in either language(The Classmates being the ones that jump most clearly to mind) The Rebuilds have the same problem although I will say Kaji is way better in the Rebuilds
>>19138307Shinji. Is. Not. Simon. You don't seem to get this fact.Shinji is still a neurotic, insecure teenager with daddy issues bigger than Kharn the Betrayer's Charisma. He didn't care about any of that, he just wanted his toy back and damn the consequences. It is NOT the behavior of a man to throw a fit when things go badly, it is the behavior of a child desperately trying to ACT like an adult.Similar to throwing oneself at an older member of the opposite sex.
>>19137913I think the Deathwatch may disagree.
>>19138300True, but that's a more philosophical form of horror, further away, at least as you describe it. I never knew those universes. But having Mom killed to pilot a psychic robot and then having Cthulhu possess her? That's fucked up and right here and now. That's immediate.

>/tg/ discusses anime better than /a/
>people thinking shinji ever will get manlyHow the fuck can you think Shinji will ever get manly when NGE is basically summed up in two words.Depression.Mechas.
>>19138294The thing is, it's not like they have an in-universe rulebook of AdEva available. Nobody has ever told Shinji that the eldritch horror machine he's piloting can also wipe out humanity. And seriously; you are accusing an emotionally damaged teenager that has been forced to fight eldritch horrors and has just seen a girl he likes being eaten by an angel for making a selfish and irrational choice. This while in middle of mortal combat, and on an adrenaline rush.Of course he chooses the girl. Hell, at that point even I would.
>>19138369>This thread>Mainly anime discussionIt's more going back and forth over whether Shinji is or isn't what they think he is or isn't.
They would classify an eva as some sort of archeotech titan, and get the techpriests on the case of how to appease it's machine spirit. Keep in mind, this is the same society that sacrifices millions a psykers a day to keep the God-Emperor alive.
The weird thing about Evas is that the share genes with us. If someone didn't know better they might realize that Evas share the same origin as humans. That would make Evas titan sized servitors. Neither titans nor servitors are heretical. wrap your mind around that one.

>>19138380My argument is simply that it is NOT a manly awesome thing. He's not accepting it and moving on like a certain other Gainax protagonist, he's refusing to let go. It's RELATABLE, but not "manly" or "awesome", but rather the act of a lonely child who doesn't want to lose the one person he thinks he has left.
>>19138300>Evangelion may have been the first but thereare more fucked up setting now, like Bokurano where the mech feeds on the pilots lifeforce meaning the kid piloting it dies after 24 hours.Zambot 3 and Ideon say hi.(The villain in the former implants little kids with explosive devices with unknown triggers (including the best friend of the protagonist!), the latter has a force in the universe that is responsible for getting all sentient life in the universe to kill each other. It also ended in an instrumentality-like event that was a major inspiration for NGE.)>>19138372It's worth noting, that in Super Robot Wars Alpha 3, Shinji's extended time hanging out with super robot pilots with a more optimistic look out has severely changed him. He tells the protagonist of Gundam SEED to stop being a crybaby and tells his dad to fuck off because Shinji is his own person, not his father's.Of course, even though it had the cooperation of the staff of NGE, SRW is essentially glorified fanfiction. However, they did take a quote directly from the game when Shinji was telling his dad to fuck off, and used it, with the same inflection, in Rebuild 2.0.

>>19138422Is Ideon that anime that ends with the heroes destroying the universe just to stop the villains?
>>19138380Well, based partly off of what the creator has said about the show in the past and also what Misato shouts at him in that scene. I would say that that scene is as close to your classic "The hero overcomes" scene as something like EVA is ever going to get.Yeah he saves Rie (and in damn fine fashion if I say so myself) but in doing so he triggers third impact and, in theory, starts the end of the world. That's pretty par for the course in Eva. not the guy you where replying to btw
>>19138452Not really. The universe is still physically whole and intact (though Ideon did cut a planet in half, and a star went supernova, and a bunch of planets were bombarded with hundreds of energy comets), but by the end of the series/movie, every sentient life form in the universe is dead. There's a particularly graphic scene where a 6 year old kid in a space suit has her head blown off by an energy pistol.

>>19138480No, it's okay, I knew at the outset that this was the likely progression. Aside from which, I'm glad I was right I'd get good-quality discussion here.
>>19138453Oh it's the closest we'll get, but it's still not a straight example. It's not a traditional "FUCK YEAH SAVE THE DAY!" scene, it's not Eva's equivalent to "Bro is dead. He's gone!" (note the acceptance of a friend's death, and the acknowledgement of the need to move on), it's a moment where a boy of fourteen decides he just wants the pain to end, and damn near screws everyone over.
>>19138152>>19138192While it was brave of Shinji to stand up and fight and save Rei, he still willingly attempted to destroy the world as part of the process.
>>19138533He was willing to let the world die when he ran away from fighting, so I'm not really seeing much of a difference. He's never actually cared about saving the world; the only reason he piloted in the first place was so papa would be proud of him.
>>19138552Replace "only reason" with "main reason."He was also shamed into piloting due to being so much of a pussy that they were going to put a injured cute girl in his place. The only time he's ever really claimed to be fighting for others is when Misato confronted him while he was confined; he spouted some drivel about protecting others, probably to save face in front of both her and himself. Misato called bullshit, but she eventually let it slide.
>>19138521>just wants the pain to endThat's pretty farfetched, considering that he had to push through the pain of getting his skin burned off to even reach Rei. If he'd just wanted the pain to end, he'd had done nothing.>>19138533>still willingly attempted to destroy the world as part of the process.Yeah, it's like Shinji was perfectly informed that whatever he is doing will also destroy humanity. OH WAIT, he wasn't.
>how the Ordo Hereticus would classify an Eva unit; exotic Godmachine, or a mammoth Defiler in need of purging?Evas are lobotomized clones of god-like aliens and are a tool in a potential plot to revert sacred humanity to a sub-human state. They would be MAXIMUM HERESY and Ordo Xenos's turf.

>>19138276Sure she is, and Cth...Kaworu also only sought a platonic relationship with Shinji.I often wonder why people are so repulsed by the idea of Rei and Shinji being attracted to eachother, is it because it would simultaneously be incest and bestiality (because Anno couldn't decide whether he wanted to work the oedipal angle or the alien angle, so he decided to have it both ways)?
Give Shinji whatever shit you want, he got in the robot. Dad that hates him, dead mom, no friends, no prospects for a future, facing reality bending horrors, but he got in the fucking robot.I don't see many 14-year-olds doing that after the Ramiel incident, where he got boiled in LCL and then, after emergency surgery, went right back out to fight.

HE FEELS EVERYTHING. People seem to ignore that fact.Watch the series, write down every bit of damage that the Eva unit goes through, the list is scary. He's had limbs chopped off, impaled over and over again, he swam in fucking lava, hit by countless beams, and that's just off the top of my head. How does anyone expect him to be a normal person? The fact he gets back up every time proves his alpha status.
>>19138697Oh, I agree with you entirely.Gendo is an adult Shinji gone terribly, terribly wrong. Rebuild only served to explicitly confirm that.
>>19138722Worst part is, Gendo most likely comes from an abusive family. Think about it, he's perfectly happy to take his wife's family name when they get married (although admittedly, if MY family name was "Rokubungi", I'd take the first chance to ditch it too), he gets into fights, he's obviously never had anyone tell him "I love you" before Yui... Hell, in the manga he explicitly DOES come from an abusive family if memory serves. And he's TERRIFIED of the concept of having to raise Shinji. The boy scares him to no end.Of course EVERYONE in Eva has a fucked up childhood, even Kaji.
>>19138722Specifically, I'd say, Gendo is Shinji given the power of adulthood. He shirks all responsibilities to his son and others around him in order to pursue a twisted dream to resurrect Yui.
Shinji might've gained a bit of stability if he'd responded less awkwardly to Asuka's advances. Her own self-loathing would've been assuaged.Probably Instrumentality would've never gone off with Shinji and Asuka working together more effectively.
>>19138966Well yeah, but that's the tragedy of Eva. Poor communication really DOES kill.

Somehow I don't see a healthy home life for him after that.
>>19138521no that scene was more about that fact that Shinji, a boy who has absolutely no purpose in his life, finally finds someone and something he is willing to stand up and fight for. hence why I said it was as close to a The Hero Overcomes scene as we will get since he has finally realised he cares about Rie and his only purpose in life from that moment on is to get her back. The fact that he has the power of a, for all intents and purposes, god at his command helps. But this is Eva so of course it leads to the end of the world as we know it.

>>19139361No, it's all from EoE.Last two episodes of the series is nothing but low-budget psychological ranting that might possibly explain what instrumentality FEELS like, but the actual exploding into orange goop was EoE.

I really understand Shinji in that scene where he wants Ayanami back. And, I'm afraid, I would do the same.Who cares about the world when I found a little piece of reason to live on, a tiniest spark of hope in darkness? (Yeah, I know it sounds pretentious as fuck, can't help it) I'm gonna tear to shreds the fucking reality.Except I can't. >>19139384>>19139387Yeah I should have clarified that I knew they get tang'd in the movie; still, ultimately Shinji rejects Instrumentality in the movie. That's why he and Asuka end up on the beach.
>>19139387WAT
>>19139410Do you want ALL THE SPOILERS, or do you want to just start watching the series/films?
>>19139410That's a really weird scene that only barely makes sense in context, with the audio from THIS:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PD-_oLjmCGYoverlaid onto it
>>19139436Okay, fair enough.>>19139428Normally I'd say go ahead, but you know what, there might be a snowball's chance in Hell I'll still watch it. Maybe another time.
How different would the show have gone if Misato got Shinji drunk enough that he just outright kissed Asuka? They're both still extremely fucked up individuals, could a relationship actually of come from Asuka knowing Shinj likes her? I think that they'd end up in one of those on and off again relationships where she declares that they're breaking up and getting back together again when she feels that he doesn't care enough for her or is too afraid he might move onto Rei or something. I'm not sure I could see them in an actual positive relationshp even if they did know the other cared for them.
>>19139491One is all Ego, the other is all Id. They're both far too fragile to maintain any sort of relationship--in the series, at least. All bets are off on Rebuild.
>>19139410watch the series then the movie then go back and watch it all gain this time taking notes. Then it will make sense...kind ofalso its not tang its LCL which is basically the human soul.
>>19139551"Everybody gets hugged and turns into Tang" is a joke dude.
>>19139491It would be a tumultuous relationship. Asuka has a pathological sense of worthlessness. It's why she acts out, strives to be the best and gets infuriated when she isn't, and hits on older, attractive men. It's also why when Shinji reacts awkwardly to her affections, she interprets it as disgust.
>>19139551
>>19139573And more importantly, over the course of the series she IS falling for the idiot, and falling hard. She pushes him away because she's afraid of him rejecting her. She doesn't want to get hurt, so she acts like an arrogant bitch to push people away. She builds a wall around herself. They all do.
>>19139491I'm not sure how Misato could get Shinji drunk other thank him being too meek to say no when she orders him to. As ffor a relationship, I think they'd only come out of it even more fucked up yet incredibly more dependent on each other for it. Like, Asuka gets mind raped by the 15th or somethign and Shinji awkwardly hugs her, leading her to not let go and they spend like three days just hugging.
>>19138422Bokurano still takes, the series is just straight up emotional torture porn. When they made it an anime they hired a director who hated the series and wanted to make it more upbeat. He saved 1 person's life.>Of course EVERYONE in Eva has a fucked up childhoodAsuka's Childhood. Appearance of only mental health professional in the series. Rather than doing her job watching the insane semi-soulless patient she shags the patients father. This leads to at least one murder attempt and a half successful double suicide.Maybe it's a good thing there are no therapists in Tokyo 3.
>>19139613Eh. Shinji comes to mind when the Angel's mind-raping Asuka and she reacts with anger and humiliation. If the two had a friendly - let alone romantic - relationship, being able to fixate on that might've given her a handle to not be swept up in the mindfuck like she was.
>>19139568I know I just felt like giving an answer that, whilst correct, is far more confusing than just saying Tang
>>19139609So what happens if there is one instance of true affection for Asuka from Shinji? Gets clingy and possesive of him? He'd either meekly try to hide from it I bet, but I wonder how that form of clingly 'love' would affect him. Make Asuka his 'Kaworu'?
>also its not tang its LCL which is basically the human soul.I'mma drinkin mah neigbor!
>>19139645>Make Asuka his 'Kaworu'?So what happens when Kaworu shows up? Does he get jealous and make a play for Shinji's affection, or is he just happy the boy found someone?
>>19139645In short: yes.
>>19139645Shinji's a 14-year-old teenage male, and all that that implies. Having a girl he finds attractive suddenly emotionally invested in him - and feeling the same way about her - would probably be good for the both of them if they weren't child soldiers fighting a war on behalf of two organizations with sinister ulterior motives.I can definitely see Shinji going full berserker if Asuka gets greased by an angel, or vice-versa. Considering the Eva are just Angels with the brain scooped out, that has very, very bad implications. We've already seen how bad they are in Rebuild, with 01 using its AT field offensively and initiating Third Impact.
>>19139609and that's why the show is so great. I guess that was why I empathised with Asuka more than anyone else in the show, but then again she is a deconstruction of the Tsundere type of character, because most women who respond to a man they find attractive by lashing out at him are probably gonna have some serious mental issues
>>19139667Probably plays Shinji emotionally else where, or doesn't give Shinji a real chance to stop him. Part of why he let Shinji kill him so easy is because while Shinji grew to love Kaworu, Kaworu had also gotten the chance to grow and love humanity through Shinji. Without a chance to fill the hole in Shinji's life, he might not get a chance to know, and therefore love, Shinji and thus humanity. Also, funny thing; Rei is Lillith in a human body, and Kaworu is Adam's soul in a human body. Shinji got two debatable gods to fall for him.
>>19139688To a certain extent, that's good. All Gendo has to do is put Asuka in danger and Shinji will rush in to save her, possibly berserking in the process and ultimately killing whatever Angel they're fighting. He pulled exactly the same trick with Rei.
>>19139694"Wall of Jericho"? Really Asuka? You expect the fourteen year old Japanese kid to get your subtle Judeo-Christian reference head-game? WHO'S the baka again?
Asuka and Shinji are very much the same character. Lost their mothers. No real friends. Betrayed by their fathers. Pervasive sense of worthlessness. Shinji reacts by curling up in a ball, Asuka reacts by going full aggression. If the two of them had ended up in a mutual romantic relationship at the chaotic age of 14, god help anyone who messes with either one, because they have the keys to a godly alien monster and found the one person in their lives who really cares for them for who they are.
>>19139688So how would Unit 01 react to Shinji flipping his shit, say during the fifteenth Angel when Asuka calls for him. Assuming of course in this situation where Shinji and Asuka have some sort of relationship going on, even if it's not a full blown dating thing.Going by Rebuild we get a full God-mode form where it would probably jump into low orbit and ride Ariel's corpse like a surf board down from the moon, but who knows? It did react to him in the original when he begged it to move versus the fourteenth Angel.
>>19139713Plus a redhead and a milfy aunt figure.Kid's big pimpin'
>>19139727This is Asuka, she wants Shinji to meet her relatively high standards.
>>19139778Oh I know, I just find it utterly hilarious.
>>19139756It depends on what sort of mood Yui's in. The Eva berserks against Zeruel in both cases because its death is imminent, and Yui's soul wants to protect Shinji. In Rebuild, you have Shinji in on the act heart and soul. His rage synchs up with Yui's and the Eva's natural destructive fury and shit gets fucking serious.I don't think he'd necessarily be able to pull a Rebuild trick without Yui being roused, but I seriously pity 'ol 15 either way.
>>19139746Especially if they fuck with Shinji. Two gods and a violent red head with the keys to a god.Fuck, that woudla great action comedy movie. Shinji gets kidnapped, and Asuka, Rei, and Kaworu all race to rescue Shinji and get his love, all the while sabotaging the others like it's waky racers. Well, Rei might not race but get ordered by Gendo to get back Unit 01.
>>19139756If it's exactly the same situation, save for the point that Shinji and Asuka are in the relationship described, I see one of two things happening:1. Unit 01 activates, breaks out of its hangar, descends to Terminal Dogma much like Kaworu later did, acquires the Lance, and kills the Angel with it in the same fashion as Rei would.2. Unit 01 activates, breaks out of its hangar, ascends to the surface, and uses its AT Field at rapidly increasing power to shield Asuka from the 15th's orbital mind-rape beam. This then leads to two endings:2a: Shinji has his psyche broken down instead of Asuka, and Rei kills the Angel with the Lance. Both Asuka and Shinji suffer from the effects of the orbital mind-rape beam, but Shinji much moreso. This is perfect for the theme.2b: Shinji uses the godlike power of Unit 01 to extend its AT Field all the way into orbit, and crushes the Angel in a suitably gruesome fashion. He might possibly also use this opportunity to acquire an S2 Engine early.

In one telling of Genesis, an older one than appears in the current Christian Bible, Adam had 3 wives, and Eve was number 3. Not all at once, mind you, it was basically a divorce without the paperwork.See, Lilith was the first wife of Adam, created out of clay just as Adam was by God (YHWH or Adonai). Life is good, Eden is Paradise. The first humans consumate their relationship. There's a problem. Lilith insists on a specific sex position: "woman on top", though in modern terms it'd probably be called "cowgirl".This was a big no-no. One, she was telling Adam what to do, and two, Adam was obeying. To the ancient Hebrews, these were both considered a VERY BAD THING with all capital letters, but God wasn't up for just up and smiting Lilith, so he cast her out of Eden. This next bit is the important one. She happened upon a rogue angel, another who had fallen out of God's favour. Lucifer. Now, Lilith enjoyed sex, and as an angel, Lucifer was WAY hotter than any human could be. They boned, and at last, Lilith was fruitful and multiplied. Lilith is the mother of monsters, the eternal temptress. That line in the Bible about "the sons of God, the Nephilim, had children with the daughters of men"? It may very well be a remnant of the tale of Lilith.
>>19140068Dear Lilith, the sex scenes are GLORIOUS.
>>19140461Like I said, the creators use it as stage-dressing, but they DID pay attention. Also, humanity is the spawn of the progenitor called Lilith. The Angels are the spawn of the progenitor called Adam. Humans are collectively, in fact, an angel, the "last angel."In the continuity of Evangelion, Adam and Lilith are of the same kind, but the sort of life they spawn is mutually exclusive. They were never intended to land on the same planet like they did. Lilith colonized the Earth first, and now Adam's Angels are trying to reach him so they can convert Earth to their sort of life. (This is their stated goal; the Angels do almost no talking themselves.)
>>19140500Yes, well, they're paired with mindfuck. So.
>>19140515This makes humans the nephilim, and makes the angels "humans" (which, in fact, they are). And it fits with the "Lilith got here first, then the sons of Adam. And they don't get along. At all."
>>19139688Actually it's more like partially lobotomized, and had their central nervous systems filled with sophisticated control circuits. Like one of those poor remote control roaches or rats, but bigger.(They don't lobotomize the rats as far as I know, but the rats are a lot less angry and big.)But yeah, they do technically have brain tissue, and do stuff occasionally on their own initiative. (That being when they are not basically comatose, which is most of the time.)But yeah, alien/demon body, tortured human soul, Eva units looking very "not Titan", I'd say it's heretical as fuck to most imperial figures, and they work to destroy it.I'd say it wouldn't be as hard as one might imagine either, especially if it's not berserk and being moved by a pilot. A powerful psyker simply mentally attacks and disables them. Going from the example of Asuka, this is quite possible. After that, the unit can be safely disposed of.If it rampages, it kind of comes down to whether Super Heavy class weapons can punch through the AT field. My thought is some can, maybe. The energy rifle they used in that one episode is undoubtedly matched by some weapon the Imperium has. Might be on a Titan, definitely a ship or flotilla of ships can match that kind of output.
>>19140461>>19140515So... No John, we are the demons?
>Okay, it sounds dark, depressing and not my normal kind of thing, but any show that allows for this kind of deep discussion could definitely be worth checking out. Are you kidding? This is about par for course in an Eva thread. And it's been like this for the last 15-odd years. And there's a new movie due this fall.>>19140461Wait, three? I knew about Liltih, and how she goes to Nod with Sameal, but who was the second wife?
>>19140554The positron rifle only works on a lower-order Angel, Ramiel, and it takes two direct hits on its core while its AT field is being charged for an attack. Unit 01 is at LEAST comperable, if not outright superior, to bog-standard angels (ref. him ruining Zeruel's shit easily, especially in Rebuild).
>>19140515Okay, so Lilith and Adam's roles are switched in this respect. In the stories it's Lilith's children out to destroy humanity, the half-demons and monsters.> Adam and Lilith are of the same kind, but the sort of life they spawn is mutually exclusive. And that is one of the (many) messages of this tale.>>19140545Indeed, humanity was spawned from Eve. Sons of Adam, Daughters of Eve.
>>19140571Yes, actually. In fact - pay attention. Several of the angels don't attack unless first attacked themselves. Sachiel seems "surprised" to face hostile firepower, the mindrape angel was just trying to communicate, and the one that does Rei 2 in was just unbearably lonely and trying to assuage that anguish. Kawrou lets himself be brutally killed. The one in the Earth's mantle was an almost helpless infant. The only Angel that comes to mind that was seriously sadistic is Zeruel, who actually diverts from his mission to try and kill NERV high command and then tries to slowly kill Unit 01.
>>19140461See, this is proof enough that YHWH sucks. He's against the cowgirl position.
>>19140571Ha ha ha, not quite, but the half-demons are the First People, humanity is the upstart (though Adonai planned for us to be the Only People). The reason we cannot coexist is because one was created by God, and given a place within His (actually, you know what, nevermind... let's not go there) ordered Universe. The children of Lilith are the monkey wrench in the Almighty's plans. They represent human emotions and lusts getting in the way of what God wants of us and what he wants in the world. They are Sheol incarnate. That will take some explaining, but I don't want to namefag/attention whore, so I'll explain if you want, but I won't keep chatting away if no one's interested.>>19140582Ah, I can get to that in another post.I'll be right back, gotta eat dinner.
ive seen the first two rebuild movies.Good god. fucking 40k Lore is more consistent and grounded than this shit. Its like the Transformers movies but /a/ edition. As other anons have said. its an anime about angsty teenagers and inept (see: Socially moronic with no reason to be) companies. Its really badly written, the mecha/EVA scenes are "okay" at best with HUGE amounts of handwavium because the EVA themselves are not the focus. The focus is "oh look pilot cries..... again"
>>19140679>This was a big no-no. One, she was telling Adam what to do, and two, Adam was obeying. The position itself doesn't matter.
>>19140692I think you've totally missed the point.
>>19140699Meh, I'm egalitarian.
>>19140692you missed the entire show which sets the groundwork for the two Rebuild movies. Those aren't standalone works - they are direct references and derivative works of the original show.you can't make a fully informed opinion about NGE until you actually watch NGE
>>19140461Yes, this was the intended meaning, we discovered that years ago. Read some shit on Eva Wiki if you're a fan of the series and it will blow your mind.
You guys got me to start watching this.Guys, does Shinji have spaghetti for blood or something?
>>19140942I hate that meme, but it's a fairly accurate way to put it.
>>19140554Actually, the Evangelions are a mix of human and Angel DNA
>>19140500See, I keep forgetting on I'm on 4chan when I go "watch out, there's porno."
>>19140964As a complete aside, in one of the games, it's revealed that Fuyutsuki (the Vice Commander) is just as warm for Yui's form as Gendo is. This is revealed by him having Shinji put on a wig and a dress, and ultimately Fuyutsuki gets his shit slapped by Shinji.>>19140692The thing about Rebuild is that nobody knows what the fuck is going on, and everyone is making up numbers and theories and ideas for the same reason shit floats in the business world - if you don't look like you know what you are doing, you get replaced. The major problem is that your boss is one of three secret conspiracies controlling the world (two of which are the same thing and one of which is run by a single man). Their retirement plan only comes in 9mm.>>19140942Being Shinji is suffering.
>>19140942Shinji is supposed to be clinically depressed and totally socially incompetent. Ever been around someone like that?
>>19140964I don't really agree with that meme.I say watch the TV ending first.Get the experience the right way, don't try to cheat your way to "getting it" faster.
>>19139893are you getting Re-take mixed up with the main canon? That would not be wise. Next you will be telling him about how Shinji and Asuka went back to Germany and had a bunch of kids that looked like Rei
>>19141149The issue with EVA is that you have the endings. Which are two sides of the same coin.TV Ending: Shinji's internal monologue about everything going on during his BSoD at Third Impact.Movie Ending: The 'outside of Shinji's head' world during Third Impact.Rebuild: I keep thinking this is a do-over after Third Impact. It fits; the blood ocean, the splatter on the moon, and Kaoru's 'This time, I'll make Shinji happy'.
>>19141172He was just making a reference to a what-if posed by another poster based off of a similar scenario IN retake.
>>19141194Which is why you ought to watch TV first, that way when you see EoE you can go "Oh! That's what that meant!"
It doesn't matter what the Ordo Hereticus thinks because this falls under the purview of The Adeptus Mechanicus. It is delicious Archaeotech.
>>19141205ahh okay.but seriously the ending of Epilogue of Evangelion was fucked up, although it did tie all the Christian imagery together in a nice way.
>>19139688>>19139491>>19139718Nothing fixes emotional instability like what would most certainly be an extremely abusive and dysfunctional relationship.
>>19141249You should read the one Evangelion manga where they actually have happy endings.
>>19141231>archaeotech>not xenotechI mean come on, these titans aren't actual titans, they are more like nids than anything.
>>19140586>>19140554The stated figures used on that positron weapon are categorically insane. It fires a 460mm solid fucking beam of antiparticles and churns them out over the speed of sound for several seconds solid. I remember calculating this once before. Positrons are anti electrons. They'll annihilate with ANYTHING. The destructive output of that weapon in joules of energy is much like if you dyson sphere'd the detonation of tsar bomba and redirected every ounce of its thermal and kinetic energy in all 360 degree, 3d directions, into a single point less than an inch wide, multiplied it several times over, and repeated this action many many times per second. The shit uses up all the energy of an advanced future Japan with unrealistically high production just to POWER the particle accelerator. It's not firing that many watts. It's running it.Admittedly, Ramiel isn't a low-order Angel. He's a fairly powerful one who just happened to appear relatively soon. Still, the Imperium doesn't have shit on that level of pseudoscience. An AT field doesn't collapse if it takes a certain amount of damage. Going by the scattered information of NGE canon, If you cross the threshold of what the Angel can reject at any point along the field, the whole thing collapses, but it otherwise essentially has infinite structural integrity. Doesn't matter how much of the field is being blasted at once or by how big of an explosion, merely the highest of all the force you can exert on it. Fucking field too long.
>>19141194that "After Third Impact" theory seems weak to me, for one thing it brings up a rather large question of exactly why everything would happen in the exact same way. The whole point of third impact was that most everbody was absorbed in to one central soul and was basically in Nirvana, so why would they come back? Also the whole red sea thing is pretty easy to explain since if I where looking for a handy visual short-hand for "The oceans are fucked" then I would colour them red.
>>19141295Let's also not forget that the really high order angels could shut out the physics of electromagnetism itself, essentially rewriting reality within their sphere of influence. Psyking isn't going to work on that level of anime bullshit. Not even the Imperium of Man is absolutely retarded enough to throw away that level of power. Even assuming they don't realize the Evangelion is essentially a servitor, SOME grey-area teks on Mars are going to start cramming as many powerful Psykers into the plug as they can. The Imperium is in no way above sacrificing human souls. EVENTUALLY they'd manage to tang enough people to get a sufficiently ridiculous AT field, and at that point they'd be literally walking into the Eye of Terror.
>>19141268Which one?Epilogue of Evangleion? Re-Take? Be specific man!""Ich verspreche dir...
>>19141306IMO, the implication is that, when Shinji and Asuka were the only two people left from the LCL fields,Shinji was STILL the focus of Third Impact. If Shinji honestly wanted a do-over to fix things (and honestly, based on how he's looking in Rebuild...), it wouldn't be outside of the realm of possibility to hit the big reset button. But that's my own personal interpretation anyway.
>>19139718Until Shinji decides to act on his desire to kill his father.
>Next you will be telling him about how Shinji and Asuka went back to Germany and had a bunch of kids that looked like ReiTo be fair there's a good chance Shinji's kids will look like Rei. Just with human pigmentation.>>19141268What about the one that's never going to end. Ever.Or the one where Gendo planeswalked from the TV universe to continue Gendoing after 3rd impact.
>>19141315That doesn't sound like Asuka at all, it's proper German.
>>19141309Which Angel was the Dyson sphere, again?
>>19141306While I don't personally care for the "sequel" theory, I don't really think of Instrumentality as Nirvana, since it's false. Hollow. And people will slowly realize that. I mean if SHINJI can reject the false happiness, the people who have real happiness would certainly figure it out eventually and trickle back.
>>19141334Either the mangaka got a German speaker to do it for him, or the scanlators corrected the German. It's from the end of RE-Take, by the way.
>>19141338Leliel, the dirac sea shadow?
>>19141283The Evas were made by human to fight Xenos. Arguably they're a mix of achaeotech and xenotech, since I think they extracted the means to make them from Lilith? It's been a while since I watched the series. I do know they' have human souls and cloned human tissue.
>>19141351Probably the manga-ka. It stretches credulity that there's a fan translator out there that speaks fluent Japanese, German, and English and wants to translate a romantic fanfiction for a 1990s cartoon that includes a smattering of hardcore pornography.
>>19141359YES, dirac sea, sorry.
>>19141366The porn part makes it completely likely.
>>19141365The Evas are clones of Adam and Lilith. They ARE Angels, albiet with their brains ripped out and some control gear shoved in.It's the equivalent of a "looted carnifex."
>>19141366You underestimate the INSANITY of the Eva fandom. There's a German guy who writes fanfic in English.
>>19141323I would say that if he had wanted a do over he would have done it whilst still in the sea of LCL [spoilerdontworkon/tg/] as he did in Re-take [spoilersdontworkon/tg/] once he left the sea he could not go back and honestly I don't see it as the downer ending everybody else does, i mean, yeah he has been completely broken and the world is empty of human life (they where never really clear on how much life dissolved though) but he is also finally in a place where he can start to change himself. He has hit rock bottom in the most spectacular fashion possible. He and Asuka are not the only two people with mental problems so there will be other leaving the LCL sea soon enough. When I say it like that it still seems like a downer but I do honestly think they can help each other out and get on the road to recovery. Also I would feel ripped off to have it be a do over
>>19141366You underestimate many fandoms. Or people who enjoy something and, y'know, make a living speaking many languages (like a military translator friend of mine).
>You underestimate the INSANITY of the Eva fandom.Which includes Asuka's original English voice actor. Based on her collection of Eva swag, she's her own waifu.
>>19141396>I would say that if he had wanted a do over he would have done it whilst still in the sea of LCL [spoilerdontworkon/tg/] as he did in Re-take [spoilersdontworkon/tg/] That happens outside the LCL. Time is frozen when he's throttling Asuka and the events of Retake occur. He apparently uses the power over Instrumentality Rei gave him to do this, though.
>>19141359>>19141338Leliel exists in a dimension of his own making understood in theoretical physics as an endless plane where "nothing" functions as particles.Tabbris is able to cockblock the entire Tokyo-3 by blocking out everything from electrons to photons across the entire several kilometer wide geofront so they couldn't even send electrical signals to their bombs to self destruct. One of those two.
>>19141338The Angels get a bit confusing to me sometimes too.Have this convenient cheat sheet.
>>19141378I thought they were made of cloned human tissue for some reason. And LCL was Lilith's blood.Oh well. Mix of Archeaotech and Xenotech, aka Tech Heresy.
>>19141424Leliel is the one I was thinking of. Tabris being the white-haired bishie and possible reincarnation of Adam.
"Rei, when someone asks you if you are a god you say 'YES'!"
>>19141329no but they seriously did, like a shit ton of kids that are all trying to get in to each others pants.I wish I was making this up, just read Epilogue of Evangelion, it gives the series a happy ending and is actually kind of a nice change of pace after the emotional gut punch of everything that came before.its on Fakku for some reason despite having no sex what so ever (well a few softer than soft core scenes) and by "Look like" I mean "Are exactly the fucking same"
>>19141459IIRC, they're made from Adam's tissue (sans Unit-01, which was Lilith's tissue) in the image of mankind. Contact experiments give them 'souls' for synchronization (IE: Yui in 01, Mama Soryu in 02).
>>19141478The manga Angelic Days has happy ending more or less. No maimed Touji, Kensuke's a pilot...
>>19141491You forgot who ELSE is a pilot!
Here is my advice for people who haven't seen the show:>Watch the Neon Genesis Evangelion series TWICE. Once to watch it, the second to figure out what the fuck you just watched>Watch End of Evangelion. (Note: they say the endings are compatible, but I'm calling bullshit on that because there are some inconsistencies between the series ending(eps.25-26) and EoE. However I would say they intersect with each other.)>Read the NGE manga>Watch the Rebuild movies>After watching/reading, all of that, I highly recommend the Evageeks wiki. The articles are well-researched and multiple theories are proposed. inb4 shitstorm.
>>19140719>>19140699>>19140679No, that Anon had it right, in this tale God IS against the cowgirl position. It puts the woman on top of the man, in a position of power, of *control*. In the story, it's her *insistence* on a *dominant* position, that is a problem, as "woman on top" is figurative for "woman in charge".The MAIN message of the story is supposed to be "women are to be subservient" and if anyone asks why this is so, they point to the story and explain "because when women are in charge, bad things happen".It should be noted that this whole story is ancient-as-balls. It hasn't been considered canon in the Jewish faith for CENTURIES, and I don't think the Christians *ever* included it.
>>19141459Close. LCL IS the blood of Lilith, so you got that right. The LCL manufacturing plant is just Lilith nailed to a cross and constantly bleeding.Said LCL is sort of the Primordial soup. Humanity eventually arose from it via evolution, but aren't the intended form of life Lilith wanted to create. The souls she was meant to shape into her own version of Angels (the Lilim) got spread and fragmented across billions of lives, hence why humanity is referenced by Lelial, Armisael, Kaworu, and the SEELE council as "lonely and incomplete". The Ego Barrier is an extremely weak AT field, since each human is an individual organism, which blocks us out from being "one" with each other. Everyone wants to avoid Lilith waking up because, as she did in EoE, she'd just reclaim all the souls of humanity down to base components and start over from scratch. The Evangelions are engineered from Adam/Lilith, but take the form of giant, slightly mutated looking humans, because they're basically the same thing. Lilith and Adam are both very humanoid when fully functional, and it's canon that they're genetically more similar to us than monkeys. The Evas are very close to humanity's intended form. We're smaller, shittier versions of them. If you look closely at the computers, you can see the Evas have all the exact same organs as humans too, just plus a core.
>>19140964Thanks, this will be very helpful, as I've no real experience with anime at all (okay some, but it was all bad and a long time ago).I do gotta ask though,Tip 5:Okay, so it's a deconstruction of robot-anime, do I have to be familiar with that genre to enjoy it?Tip 6: I have no idea what any of those names mean. I assume they're other shows, but that's it.Tip 7:> It's not "loldeep", it's complicated and fucking weird but not 'deep' as in the message(s) it tries to communicate.Ummm, what?
>>19141491isn't that pretty much the same as the Raising Shinji Ikari Project manga? in relation to my pic, it is a shame that they have to cram the char development in to such as limited time frame with the movies
>>19141592Pretty much.
>>19141588In that order-No, but it helps you know what Anno was thinking. They're shows by the same studio. And disregard that one.
>>19141588Not really. You have to be familiar with the genre to appreciate the originality of the series, but whether you watch super robot or not has no bearing on the final product. In response to that last one, lots of simpleton retards who don't get the fairly simple theme of NGE accuse it of being pretentiously "deep and edgy" without any real substance and trying to appear intellectual by throwing around a lot of unconnected symbolism. The truth is the story is probably more complicated than it needs to be and difficult to understand, but once you get what's going on, it's a rather simple and pure message. It also helps to understand Anno's mindset when making it, which was to lure in depressed little Otakus like him with shiny robots then skewer their fixations and tell them to grow the fuck up. Asuka and Rei exist to tell them that "no, these character archetypes are NOT attractive. real people who act like this are fundamentally broken people". Shinji exists as a deliberate insert of them to show what happens when you refuse to even try on life and other people for fear of failure and rejection, etc. It was groundbreaking for the time because it was an anime telling people with only anime in their life how pathetic they are.
>>19141478Dear God, them dominant Ikari genes.>>19141526If you can't maintain dominance in bed because she's on top you need practice. Lot's of practice.
>>19141588you don't need to understand robot anime to get it, i had never seen one before watching but i still got it. You will appreciate it a bit more in the academic sense but it won't effect your enjoyment. Also be aware that the show doesn't really get in to the heavy stuff till quite a ways in (asuka is not even in it for the first couple of episodes) so just stick with it, it is defiantly a show that rewards patients.I think what he meant with the LOLdeep thing is that it doesn't have any great message to bestow about human nature or anything but it does have a complex web of relationships between the chars and that is its strength
>>19141592God, Rebuild Asuka is seriously messed up. It's more subtle, but I'd say she's actually WORSE than TV Asuka. >>19141588Gunbuster ("Top wo Nerae!" or "Aim for the Top!" in the original japanese) is a really cool six episode OVA that is basically what happens when you throw Top Gun, an old tennis manga called "Ace wo Nerae!" ("Aim for the Ace!"), and giant robots in a blender. It's directed by the same guy who directed Eva, and combines awesome action scenes with a fucking HEARTBREAKING last two parts, and a manly tears ending. The Daicon shorts were animated shorts for Daicon (pretty much the BIGGEST sci-fi convention around at the time) that were pretty much Gainax's first work.Otaku no Video is a 1991 comedy series from Gainax that I'm not really familiar enough to explain.
>>19141295>The stated figures used on that positron weapon are categorically insane. It fires a 460mm solid fucking beam of antiparticles and churns them out over the speed of sound for several seconds solid. Before Rebuild, I justified positron weaponry as just energy caused by antimatter annihilation, but the fact that they came out and said "no it actually fires positrons" blew my mind.So I'm just going to pretend they never said that because it's dumb.
>We're smaller, shittier versions of them. If you look closely at the computers, you can see the Evas have all the exact same organs as humans too, just plus a core. And junk. Unit 01 is fully functional.>>19141588Also, be aware that the budget starts running dry as quickly as you would expect from a real life Springtime for Hitler. This results in some extremely uncomfortable scenes.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKSa6BgoRCY
>>19141538So we're an offshoot of them... Does that technically make them human as well? This might give us enough leeway in the whole "Archaeotech or AT and XT" argument for the Adeptus Mechanicus to approve their use for the glory of the Imperium.
>>19141727Ah yes, the elevator scene. Also, be sure to watch the extended cuts of any episodes that have them, ESPECIALLY episode 22.
>>19141727Concept art isn't canon, dumbass.
>but I'd say she's actually WORSE than TV Asuka.Definitely worse.Soryu can actually pretend she's a functional human being in public. Shikinami can only communicate with her PSP.
>>19141268I've watched and read everything eva (even re-take, girlfriend of steel manga, that crazy shit made by the guy who drew the mecha designs, and even fanfics), however I only consider the series, the NGE manga, EoE, and Rebuild to be canon, with the series taking precedence over the rest. This idea that you can take any of the characters and say that things would be magically better if this person was Shinji's waifu is absurd.Hell, if anything, Asuka would be more compatible with Kaworu due to his dogged attempts to befriend anyone he meets and his emotional unflappability/obliviousness make him the only person in the cast capable of putting up with her.
>>19141785And that doll...Jesus tittyfucking rimjobbing Christ that doll.
>>19141803>Hell, if anything, Asuka would be more compatible with Kaworu due to his dogged attempts to befriend anyone he meets and his emotional unflappability/obliviousness make him the only person in the cast capable of putting up with her.I like you.
>>19141803true but i don't think any of us are saying they are canon just that sometimes, maybe, it is nice to read a story where people don't end up trying to murder someone on a beach beside a ocean made of people.
>>19141592Well, that's why you need to watch the series first, to get the characterization. Any in Rebuild is just to adjust what you know, like the doll, or this scene.
>>19141785I think they tried to make her problems far more overt since they don't have the time to spend showing how her mind works so she has ended up being some what less believable as a character.I don't hate the Rebuilds but I was aware going in to them that they would need to cut ALOT and streamline everything else for the movie format, hell they cut out a shit ton of stuff and the second movie is still over two hours long!
>>19141851true but the stuff with Rei is a massive change from the original series, along with the dynamic between her and Asuka. not complaining just sayin'
someone should really archive this thread, the day /tg/ had a better anime discussion than /a/
>>19141887Yeah, Rei is much more active in Rebuild. It's interesting. But what I am most looking forward to is when Cap'n Shikinami finally meets Mari. Probably try to murder her for smashing up HER Unit-02.
>>19141329Why is Mari chainsawing something why Rei and Asuka look on in horror?
well gents, it has been a pleasure talking with you about a cartoon with you all.P.S. The Third Impact Theory is a load of balls.
>>19141941Because Mari is BUGFUCK INSANE!Remember, she nearly molested Shinji just because he smelled like LCL.
>>19141902You mean every time /tg/ discusses anime?
>>19141747They're more human than Ogren or whatever the fuck the name of those things the IG use are. They're also occupied by explicitly human minds and souls. There is no xenotech. No chaos. That's about as koshure as out-of-40K material can get.>>19141719It is pretty ridiculous, but it's pretty much spongebob logic in a series about giant god aliens. NGE is technologically archaic. The world is RUN by the United Nations. The UN is pouring all its science and money and manpower into preventing Third Impact. As a result, consumer electronics and luxuries like that are stuck in the 90s, while military technology is a hundred years or more ahead of its time. Also keep in mind that positron weapon can be construed to be reverse engineered as well. Ramiel's bioscan shows it using a "toroidal accelerator" to use its beam weapon, which all three positron rifles also use manmade versions of. Angels frequently use violently explosive and absurdly powerful beam attacks. Do the math.At the very least the use of such an over the top weapon was very well handled. Experimental, unreliable, undeveloped for most of the series, required impossible amounts of power, burnt itself out after every shot, ridiculously huge, and only even considered practical in a situation then planned to raise the white flag on anyways. The whole episode was dedicated to it. Better than the robot suddenly just unfolding a giant beam cannon from its chest for no reason.
>>19141966Sorry, not archaic, "anachronistic" is what I meant.
>>19141638That last paragraph... I actually said out loud, despite no one else in the house, WOW. That's crazy, and really ballsy. It's not just a deconstruction of a genre, it's the deconstruction of the fandom and its failings? Hell, anime *fans* probably have a lot to do with my dislike of the stuff too (there's others, but I'm pretty sure none of you care, it's not that interesting).>>19141651Good to know. Now that I think back, I was nowhere near familiar with comic books when I discovered Watchmen, but it still ended up being one of my favorite books. Now that I'm more familiar with the comic medium, I love it even more, hell, it was one of the things that got me *interested* in comics at all. I thought they were all childish and stupid, but when I saw Watchmen, I realized, finally, that they didn't *have* to be.Hmm, childish and stupid describes my distaste for anime, who knows, history may repeat itself here...
>>19141831I concur, which is the reason I read the occasional fanfic (most are terrible, but a few are great), I just expect a certain level of... let's call it emotional realism.
>>19141902Every board is better at discussing anime than /a/. It's the unwritten rule of 4chan. Every board hates what it is dedicated to./v/ hates and is bad at videogames/tg/ hates and is bad at traditional games/a/ hates and is bad at anime/sp/ hates and is bad at sports/mu/ hates all music anyone else listens toNobody on /k/ actually owns a weapon
>>19141959Right, but I'm just curious as to the context. What's that from? Also, Mari is god damn awesome. Her English VA is great. Can't wait to see how they weave her into the ongoing story, and her and Asuka interacting should be a thing of beauty.
>>19142077Tengu no Tsuzura's Tamagokake. Mari is helping them cook dinner for Shinji. She's doing better than they are.His entire catalog is hilarious and needs to be read.>>19141902Care for some Boku no Pico?
>>19142022Eh, feel how you will, but Asuka chose (or tried to choose) Shinji. Probably because they're alike and she identifies with him, whether she'd admit that or not.
>go to /tg/>no good /tg/ threads>several hundred post autosaging thread that not only answers the OP's question, but discusses Evangelion at length>the mod=fag hasn't deleted it, and newfags aren't saging it or posting ponies
>>19140964>>19141506Sheesh, and I thought the way they released Star Wars was convoluted.
>>19142238umad
>>19142293Actually I think Anon meant it as a compliment, unless I'm mistaken.
>>19142302I did. It used to be /tg/ could talk about ANYTHING like this.>>19142286It's not so bad. Watch the series. Watch End of Evangelion. If you want more, watch Rebuild AND/OR read the manga AND/OR read Retake. The manga only has one serious plot diversion. Last it left off, Shinji had actually saved Asuka from the MP Evas instead of moping around his bakelite-covered unit.
>>19142115Where can this be read?
>>19142342Oh, well that's good, I was kind of under the impression that *all* of that was as neccesary as the various episodes of Star Wars or something with regards to the complete story. So Rebuild, Manga, and Retake are sort of like "extended editon" or something?
>>19142389The original series is the series. The movies death and rebirth are just two halves of the "End of Evangelion" movie, which is direct series canon, and is basically the way the series was SUPPOSED to end before they ran out of budget. The Manga was made by another guy in direct collaboration with Anno before the series even entered production, and is virtually identical (albeit, better written with better characterization due to not being restrained to 26 episodes and a high budget). It's not necessary, but it's worth reading just because it feels like the main series "perfected".Rebuild is a new thing coming out now that nobody is sure of how canon it is, but is fucking cool anyways, and actually made by Gainax.ReTake is fan-work. Not canon at all. It's secondary reading material if you enjoy Evangelion and want more.
>It's secondary reading material if you enjoy Evangelion and want more. And if you're an Asukafag. Or simply have to have a good end that is completely unambiguous.
>>19142436If you're an Asukafag you download ANIMA and beat off to 100 foot tall sexy robo Asuka.
>>19142417So what was this rumour I heard about the series having what amounts to a Bel-Air at the end of the series, a "Gainax Ending" as TvTropes called it?
>>19142454End of Evangelion is a GIGANTIC fuck you to the protagonists, with things going from "they can't get worse" to "oh god they just got worse," culminating in an ending that would be a nightmarish bad end for any other anime but is, for Eva, relatively hopeful and positive.People make too big a deal out of the weirdness of it. Eva was already plenty weird.
>>19142454Big spoilers but:Right when things hit their most intense, Gainax gets sued for tax fraud because they were hoarding all the money they had suddenly run into after nearly failing as a studio. First time they had ever really been rich and were wanting to save for the long term. The court battle drained all the funding for the show, so they had to cop-out HARD for the ending, skipping out on the planned action and replacing it with an hour of, and I am not exaggerating, fucking crayon scribbles and storyboard sketches narrated by the voice actors with freaky music and ending abruptly with everyone appearing on the moon applauding for Shinji with the giant words CONGRATULATIONS ALL CHILDRENEnd of Evangelion is what the ending was intended to be, which they did after they were rolling in DOSH from the Eva merchandising machine.
>>19142454>A Gainax Ending is an ending that doesn't make any sense.>The Trope Namer is Studio Gainax, who became associated with this trope after the infamous ending of Neon Genesis Evangelion. You know how we've been talking about the low-budget ending of the series, which the film was created to compliment? The one which got the creator death threats? It was weird and hard to understand.
>>19142485Wow, just wow. That sounds fucking hilarious right now, but I can imagine it'd probably be pretty irritating had you actually watched the show beginning to end.So they made money and wanted to save it wisely rather than go on a shopping spree? And suspicison of foul-play meant the trough was empty when it came time for AdEva's din-dins?If I'm understanding that right, it sounds on par with the BS that Fox pulled with Firefly.>>19141727Watched that clip (had to have the sound off) I honestly thought my computer had frozen... until she sneezed.
>>19142552>(had to have the sound off)Up until the conversation you missed nothing. There's no or next to no sound in that scene.
>>19142578>>19141785These reminded me that they are named after WWII ships.
>>19142618Yeah, and Hikari and her sisters were named after the Horaki train lines.
Elegan/tg/entlemen and ladydudes, it has been an honor and pleasure speaking with you today. This makes me nostalgic for the good old days of /tg/, and so, by the power vested in me by no one at all, I open /tg/ to discussions on all topics. "I have taken all knowledge to be my province" - Sir Francis Bacon . . . And tg has all of that knowledge. You don't even need the other boards, but go forth and mingle, and inform, and joke, and explain, and have a good time.

http://wiki.evageeks.org/A resource if/when you need it.The community there is fairly nice too.
>>19142485Goddamnit you ruined the ending for him. You only get the "What the fuck did I just watch? Is it good end? Yay?" reaction once from eva. You've just stolen his mindfuck v-card.People who haven't seen Neon Genesis Evangelion, I demand you not look at this thread again and that you go watch the series immediately.
