Last thread >>19064012 (its on autosage, so I'm making a new one for us)

Hello and welcome to another evo game! This time we're developing things in the ocean, at the reefs. There's three major reefs worldwide.

The rules are simple:
1) evolve a creature by modifying their picture and giving a plausible reason.
2) only a single modification/upgrade may be made per 'update'.
3) you can choose different species to upgrade.
4) I'll be plopping some events which you can adapt your creatures to, and decide if any updates are invalid.

The Leaflurker Rohas gain more scent receptors on the tips of their tentacles. Their electrical side fins also begin to jut forward instead of back, allowing them to better fit into the Ojos' vase-like leaves. Combined with their weak electrical detection field and powerful sense of smell, they can pinpoint every creature within a fifty-foot radius.

The Oar Kafka swarm out of the cave they had been trapped within, quickly re-establishing their place in the food chain with their unusual pack attack tactics and powerful thermal bubble attack.

Filling a sack on the back of their head, they mix chemicals together and spit them forth in a jet of superheated bubbles that stun their prey or kill them. Similar to the boost rohas methods. The Oar Kafka use this attack to herd small schools of prey into one area and then take shots at the frightened mass using their thermal attack like a shotgun to disable food for them to eat

We're in dire need of a new global event. Hopefully IG or NG come up with something good for us.

You're right. I also think that the reefs are starting to get ripe for Cruelb and Seek'kre tribes to move in.

In the meantime, working on a possible development of early Ramel/Mash.

Event you say????
--------------------------------------------
The harsh storms that wrack the surface of the ocean have dredged up some old faces. The Skrimp reproduce rapidly, and are food for higher tier species. Regular skrimp, are small scavengers and filter feeders, living in huge swarms like brine. Tiger skrimp are low tier predators traveling in packs of 6-12. Grand skrimp are massive filter feeders.

Ykex'ry is an eel like creature with a mouth full of rows and rows...and rows of tiny tiny razor sharp teeth. they swallow whole then "swish" their prey around shredding them alive. they have no bones, so their heads can do some funny things. with that said...there is more to come next post.
>>
>>19086213
Hey non gent, do you have the detailed basic ramel pic?
>>
((In the interest of people playing with multiple creatures who want to you can interbreed them into one creature.)) Bord heavy industries have increased toxic dumping onto the reef, this time the equipment is military grade toxins. The public awareness of the bord and the dumping on the planet is increasing, its mutagenic effects are rather horrible and may explain the planets rapid "evolutions".
----------------------------------------------
Bord have dumped defective military grade autonomous cybernetics. They were made to be deposited on the battlefield and attach to the wounded, bringing them back from the brink of death or worse, as killing machines once more.
----------------------------------------------------------------
well folks, here it is, if you want this, ill offer it up. There are three options here. One: the cyber weapons activate and you can make your creatures horrific amalgamations. trust me, i've got some art all ready and shit. two: the chemicals are the only thing that survives the drop into the ocean, and you get new mutation options. THREE: both of these things occur.

So... Ive been working on an approximate size comparison chart.

Here is everything I have so far. I honestly have no idea what size the Slizers or Aquabord are. Nor the new guys like the Hoppers/skrimp/etc If someone wants to add them in, go for it

a: remora phou
b: Tail Nuro
c: Bearded Phou
d: winged phou
>>
>>19086621
Can we get some 'normal' events rather than more Bord mutations and so forth? We just got done with a wave of mutations and such. Plus we just got a slew of new critters to mess with. So wild mutations seems a bit abrupt

>>19086621
NG, don't think it's such a good idea for the Bord to have such an active impact on development. It's best just to leave them at the crashed ship for now.

The Skrimp in the eastern reef taken a different coloration. Apparently orange is a color which the zooplankton which they feed on are incapable of perceiving. Their feelers become more sensitive, and their tail elongates.

Also, found a ramel pic close to the basic. Just edited it back a step. I'll post that next.

A good reference from scale to actual size would be that Tail Nuro are about the size of a mature lobster.

Here's that Ramel page. One hole patched up.
>>
>>19086766
Oh, they musta gotten big when I wasnt looking. I thought they were tiny. That would put them roughly to scale with the Luscanemat Nuro then... As I kinda pictured them about that size.
>>
>>19086786
Volcanic vents event. Rolled grow larger.
>>
Yeah, space the events a bit more.
I think the 'roll for mutations' system is getting kinda out-of-hand and defying a bit of logic. I'd rather have 'roll for survival' followed by 'how did you survive'.

That said, consider this event >>19086621
retconned.

I'll write up a new event as soon as there's more evolution going on.
>>
>>19086732
>>19086712
wilco! im currently out of steam.
>>
Once I get an idea of the rest of them or find motivation again, Ill fix it. Right now Im painted out. That was a long process of scaling things so they fit. Man I wish paint had layers.
>>
I think the Eastern Reef needs an event that doesnt necesarily kill off or mutate the species, but that gives it some character. Right now, the Western has their poisonous plankton. The Central has a trench and a kelp forest. But the east just is overrun with Roha and thats not really helpful.
>>
>>19086853
Well, indeed. Remember, the East Reef is closer to the equator, so the water is warmer and there's a ton of planktons. But go north from the square, and you find a great and strong undersea current going west-east. That could be the source of an event.
>>
>>19086688
Always imagined the Slizers as being somewhat larger than the Walker Rohas, but still smaller than the Deep Rohas. But then again, I thought the Whale Kafkas were bigger than that, so who knows.

Also, was any of the Rohas coalition stuff canon?

>>
>>19086934
They're big, but they arent epic big. They never got any size increase mutations. They just grew to match the food increase. While they arent massive, they are -many- though. They swim in huge schools and breed like crazy to keep up with the massive amounts of predation on them. They're like tuna basically.

As far as the Roha. Id say we consider them Bee intelligence where they have a hive and cooperative communication amongst their species (and the few that work with them, but by no stretch are they sentient)

As the waters around it have heated up, the Eastern Jet Slizer has developed a strange adaptation. Cracks have formed in the Slizer's exoskeleton, which causes the plates of the carapace to rub together as the Sliver moves, creating bursts of low frequency sound. The exposed tentacles of the Sliver have proven sensitive enough to detect these frequencies, giving the Sliver a superior understanding of the environment around it, and has resulted in the tentacles increasing in length to serve as better receivers. The faster the Sliver moves, the louder and more frequent its sonic bursts become, making it incredibly difficult for prey to escape the Sliver.

The Aquabords' beaks become much more streamlined to balance out their newly sprout body spikes. The new shape also allows them to deal with the skrimps' hard exoskeleton much more easily.

If so, then the majority of the rohas are far too big.

The megamouth kafka is the largest species and I kinda figured that right now it topped out at around 20-25 feet long. Whale Kafka being a little smaller maxing out around 20 feet, and the Deep Roha about the same size as the megamouth once tentacles were figured in. The ocean Hopper is the largest creature probably reaching sizes of 30 or so feet.

The key to remember for size is that while these guys are big, they live in relatively shallow reef areas and only the biggest fish can survive the migrations across open oceans.

The whale/crusher/megamouth kafka live in giant schools so while individual members are not that huge, they represent a massive quantity of food in the environment.

The rest of the hive/ripper boost roha move to new colony luscanemats farther away from the thermal vents and continue to do their thing in peace. Leaving the Spiny Curve and Deep Roha in the conditions they now thrive in.

The heat from the vents and roiling chemicals only seem to spurn on further plankton bloom in the area which means the Whale/Megamouth kafka have more food and grow in size, some of the oldest ones reaching more than 30 feet in length.

A massive chunk of the coral reef dies from all the lava, but once the event cools down, the tiny volcanoes slowly begin to form an island chain. Over time, the region becomes even more lush than before and the reef triples in size, although now a majority of it is much shallower.

so many years have gone by.
the corals have been working.

in the greatest depths, a titan has risen. a colony so massive and ancient it defies logic. the roo corals in the trench have had little predation, and even fewer visitors. they have grown to immense proportions. with twisting spires and silent, flooded corridors the Grand Spire is home to a literally incalculable number of individual polyps. billions upon billions of roo have grown in tandem to create a construction that would dwarf the greatest of kafkas, if it could reach the depth required to see the Spire in the darkness of the trench.

few living beings have seen the deep catacombs of the Grand Spire and those who have are not like to return, lost forever in the infinitely twisting machinations of coral and time.

what will become of the empty coral halls? will an ecosystem form within its shell, or will the monument sit forever forgotten at the bottom of the sea?

CASE, your coral lives in the depths...im making something just for you. because we have "old nameless" and well, to be honest, this world doesn't have enough horror. I'm going to give you something to work with and I expect magic from it.
------------------------------------------------
Deep in the trenches below the light, far away from the concerns of the reef dwellers a metamorphosis begin. It started with a few pollyps and then the entire colony, then the entire structure. The coral could move entire segments of itself over a period of about three days. It grew faster now too, the cause of this was a deep fissure below the structure that was pumping mass amounts of nutrients from geothermal geysers.
------
long story short. you grow. you grow massive, your spires are more like giant twisting tentacles wrapping around themselves, supporting and climbing...the pathways, rooms and labyrinths come and go as the coral undulates and moves in an almost imperceptible rate. but for the sake of argument it grows and can move at about three feet per day. upward, no so much spreading out, only to form a bigger base to support its upward growth.

the ocean.
They live their childhood in the waters, but when they mature and start to fly in the air, they only return to the sea in short bursts of hunting.
Their rear tentacles become more rigid and arm like, developing harder internal structures and joints which allow them to hold their weight much better, making it easier for these creatures to rest by latching on to the plant life of the islands.

The mega mouth kafkas gill rakers become more complex forming the basic start of baleen, creating a series of flexible 'combs' within its jaws that fold and open as it opens and closes its mouth.

Males have also developed flushed patches of red and orange as a form of sexual selection, forcing them to be more heavily preyed on but, weeding out weaker members of the species.

Their bodies start to bloat, as their reproductive organs swell and their egg production increases. They lose their wings, along with their electric abilities and even sight, as everything not related to eating and egg laying starts to atrophy.
These fat rohas lay thousands of eggs within the whale hoppa, while feasting on it's flesh. The larval rohas which spawn from the creature feed on the flesh, grow, mate while constantly eating their way trough the hoppa's flesh, until they breach the skin and are released and free to infest another whale hoppa.
The rohas queens try to kill any other rohas attempting to settle inside their host, though their bloated state often hinders this, and thus, more often than not, one hoppa can be a host for numerous queens.
This parasitism is ultimately lethal for the whale hoppa, but it might take months, or even years until it succumbs to these tiny squids gnawing on it's insides.

The flying rohas living in the islands become even more predatory. Their proto arms are refined into sharp clawed and strong hunting arms, they grow in size and gain a stinger to their tails. This stinger channels their electricity to their prey more efficiently than simple body contact.

Their prey consists mostly from andonises, bords and other island critters that live in the archipelago, as well as the water bound creatures. Their electric sense allows them to communicate with each other trough electric pulses and changes in their personal electric fields.

Anyone around to help me update the Crusher Kafka? I think due to the increasing variety of prey around the reef there will be a split in their species. One variety of crusher develops a larger head to support larger eyes and crushing jaws to be able to eat larger prey. The other abandons the armored prey and begins to become more streamlined and fast to chase down schools of other species of kafka.

The Tree Frilla quickly develop to become more bloated floating frilla that begin to clump together like lilly pads on the sea, their strong fat streamers entwine other frilla and link them together so not even the strongest seas can pull them apart. These little floatsam islands quickly become a haven for flying roha as well as a safe haven from bigger predators like the slizers where fish can lay their eggs without fear. This change creates an even more dense and intricate web of plant life in this region making it harder for larger predators to navigate through

I kinda see it as slowly gaining individuality. Kinda a massive colony with a single minded purpose but Not really able to breed or anything, so it just starts to spread its roots deeper, and burrow itself into a pit where collecting prey is easier. (Kinda like the sarlac bit, but with poison and tentacles) Maybe eventually it kinda burrows holes in the sides of the pit it lives in and hides tentacles in the caves so it can attack from multiple angles. Also, in a pit, its poison wouldnt disperse because the current wouldnt affect it, so once things swam too deep it would be over for them.

The Island Roha's change of diet has become varied due to its new surroundings. Unfortunately it cant process some of the new minerals it is digesting, so it starts to develop nodes of conductive metals in its skin at various points. They seem to serve as a means to magnify their electrical sense even farther, and quickly identify other members of the species. Over time these deposits kill the island roha, but before that the roha continue to see farther and farther.

after ages of building, the Grand Spire surpasses four miles in height.

the polyps within have split into two groups: builders and jellies. the builder polyps go on as usual: filtering nutrients from the seamount vent and producing more and more material for the colony to live within. the jelly polyps create a thick soup of life within the chambers of the colony's reef, and consume marine snow that filters down from the surface. the sheer concentration of jelly polyps within the structure makes the water significantly denser than the surroundings, often entrapping visitors to the vile reef to be slowly devoured by the jelly polyps.

with such efficiency in gathering resources, the reef has become able to grow at an astronomical rate of nearly three feet a day. this is also true for construction within the reef: corridors change layout within a week, and the labyrinthine chambers slowly undulate and rearrange with each passing year.

inklings of a single-unit structure are stirring within the colony as well, beginning to resemble the lives of siphonophores on earth. strange patterns can be observed in the blinking bioluminescent tentacles of the polyps, and the living fluid within the Spire pulses ominously with a uniform current of jellies.

Also, the roha have been awful quiet... I wonder what they're up to...?

I made the Old Nameless One to be more mobile than other Luscanemats so that it would give more chances for encounters with different races around the globe but it's stuck to the west reef for now. It isn't single Luscanemat as those tentacles on it's sides are Cystonemats, they just are quite badly mutated and they give the food for the luscanemats maw as they can't digest themselves anymore. And for the intelligence.. nope, it's still goes with instincts and those are mainly "Eat eat eat" that's why it moves constantly looking for things to eat. Well the chemicals are still there so you can't ever know what they will do.

Over time, the island roha adapts to the minerals within it's diet. The conductive metals within it's skin develop into a network of conductive "veins" that serve to both to amplify and direct the electric output of the creature, as well as working as a rudimentary Faraday cage, which keeps the electricity away from the more sensitive organs of the roha, allowing it to generate and direct voltages that would have been lethal for it's ancestors.

Their electric sight doesn't work well outside of the water, and thus, their eyes have improved to accommodate this. Their electric field is used to identify each other, and for communication, though it can still be used for detection in extremely close ranges. As the rohas are naturally sensitive to electromagnetic fields and pulses, they can detect each other, and even communicate from relatively long distances.
This social contact has increased their intelligence, and they sometimes even work in groups to help their hunting.

cont.
>>
>>19100539

One curious behavior has also risen within these island rohas. The thunderstorms that are quite common in the equatorial archipelago generate massive electricity, as well as cause the air to become extremely humid. This buildup of static electricity and the increased conductivity in the air draws the rohas towards the forming thunderclouds. As the storm builds up, the electric senses of the rohas are super charged, they can sense each other from miles away. They congregate under and within these clouds and start pulsating electricity in rhythm. This is the mating dance of the storm rohas. The males try to cause miniature lightning strikes by increasing their static electricity, under the thunder is drawn to them, and if they survive, the females will flock to them. Many rohas are fried instantaneously, as lightning strikes them from the sky, but those who manage to stay just close enough to the storm so that they may leech of it's power and call down weak thunder survive, and get to pass on their genes. The few lucky ones who survived simply due to their internal conductive protection also get to breed, and thus, the "Faraday cages" of the storm rohas continue to improve.

The wings of the Storm Roha begin to be unable to sustain the mass of their bodies, but the Storm Roha continue to endure. Taking in some of the ideas of the plant life of the region, the Roha begin to develop internal pouches they can fill to make their bodies lighter, giving them a much easier time while flying. These sacs also seem to change their unique flying style to more of a serpentine shape rather than a U shape with their tails trailing behind them.

Some of them have started depositing these eggs within their kills, and then hiding the carcase, so that their offsprings could have food immediately after hatching.

Their metabolism has to be running in the over drive constantly, as they have to generate enough energy for both their flight and their electric powers. Usually, creatures with fast metabolism don't live that long.

Not to mention that their mating practices are quite dangerous. Trying to get lightning to hit you isn't exactly safe. Because of the fact that they are likely die due to lightning at some point, they would propably live just long enough to ensure that they have at least few chances to breed.

I kinda regret making the sentient hoppas short lived, as they do not have any actual reason for it.
The Suzumou are tiny wasp critters, and they live about as long as one would expect from the creature of their size.
Though one could argue that the hoppas just die younger than they would in ideal conditions due to diseases and other hardships that result from living in primitive conditions.
>>
I have to admit that I'm burnt out for the reefs. No more ideas.

>>19109330
My impression was that 40 was the average live expectancy for tribal hoppas. Looking at wikipedia, human expectancy was even lower than that in the past.
>>
Why not make the Hive Roha into a sentient race instead. The Storm Roha should just be flying terrors that reign in the sky. Meanwhile the Hive Roha have colonies, domesticated beasts and the ability to communicate with multiple species of other Roha.
>>
>>19109718
I could get behind this idea.

((this event is entirely option, your species will be a unique case unable to pass its traits down to further generations, and indeed, in time this may fade from the face of the planet, but...its also really bad ass, and a fun diversion. so here we go.))
----
the bord have used this planet as an illegal dumping ground for at least a few centuries, and in that time its usually just been for their societal rejects, garbage, and the occasional load of chemical waste. Recently a legislation passed by the bord government has mandated the disposal of first generation automated wartime cybernetics. They are unsafe, painful, and unnecessary with current advances in power suits.with that said, they were to be disposed of by being dumped into the Borgas system's sun. The contractors are quite lazy, and dumped the cargo onto the planet. it crashed into the sea.
----------
automated cybernetics seek out life forms, bond to them, and can survive the destruction of their host to move on and find a new life form. they offer enhancements, though their software is very buggy.

2. penetrating vision- see thru terrain to your objective. only able to penetrate 3 meters deep.
3. simple la-dar. laser terrain and environmental sensing.
4.GPS uplink- turns out there are a few abandoned bord satellites in high orbit. pretty handy for getting around.
5. sympathetic AI - feeds real time information gathered from multiple sensors to host, making small visual suggestions in the form of highlighted pathways, weak spots, or other things of interest. learning to use is intuitive and instinctive. can cause psychosis.

You could even make it so not -all- the Hive Roha are sentient, but the queens inside the Hive have all this time been rewarding the smartest of their species with breeding rights, so there could be casts of them. You've got two strains even. The Spiny Curve Roha and the Hive Roha, and they work with the Deep Roha. The cave roha have become watchdogs, and the stilt roha are being observed for potential usefulness as well

>>19109836

>>19109713
Now that you say that, I kinda agree. 40 years is quite lenghty life span for a creature that is living in pre technological environment.
>>19109718
Honestly, we could do both.
The storm rohas haven't been actually an aquatic species for ages, so it's not like that they would be occupying the same environment. That's why I have been requesting info about the islands, as I need to know in what kind of an environment the storm rohas live.
The terror of the skies niche has already been claimed by the dragon slizers and the cho wespars. The storm rohas are only about the size of an adult human, and they weight barely about 20-30 kilograms. They aren't actually very fit to terrorize anything bigger than a dog.

>>19109804
>>19109819
I am kinda iffy about this. I always felt that the bords should remain as a joke or a refrence here and there, but never actually affecting the development of the species themselves. I felt that if they should actually become an active influence, it should be in the civ stage, so that we could have some sort of war of the worlds scenario or something.
>>
Naah, I think leave the BORD hardware up to be discovered as artifacts.
Then we can has more nutty civ stage shenanigans.

I'm still not sure if we should have borg'd up creatures...
BUT!
We could have a new creature of two that's made up of the amalgamation of these parts.
>>
>>19109948

Disregard that what I said about the weight of the rohas. They are actually even lighter, the heaviest ones only barely exeeding 10 kg weight. Normal weight would span between 4-7 kg:s
This is because of the gass sacks that they have, which serve to make their bodies lighter.

i was just putting it out as an exercise, the above states that the creatures can reproduce and are one offs- individuals, blah blah....really...just wanted to see some bord'ged out creatures and the thread seems to be tapped out. I agree though. totally over the top and the bord are a joke, at least in my book. I use em every now and then when things need to be ridiculous. I didnt really expect the kind of response i got from the toxic waste event, it and the tables were really a joke. im going to bed now, if i wake up and find cybernetic horrors, yay. just know they cant progress, and if i have "rustled any jimmies" i apologize.

I vote Old Nameless eats them all and becomes a true terror of the deep!

Also, wasn't it said that the crashed bord ship was traveling long enough so that its occupants underwent a sort of "devolution" due to having the ship's AI take care of their every need? If that is the case, their home world would have to be hundreds of thousands of light-years away at least. Of course, everything bord related could be labeled simply as debris from the crash.
>>
Extra info on the islands would also help me develop the island hoppas further. I plan to make them into the merfolk of the sentient hoppas.
They most likely wouldn't be tribal, they could use simple tools, but intelligence wise, they would be beneath the proper tribal species. The intelligence difference between them and the Nad'lun would be about the same as the difference is between us and the chimps or dolphins. They could potentially be trained to do relatively complex tasks, but on their own, they would stay quite primal.

time for tonight's Grand Spire colony update.

the Spire continues to grow, strengthening its walls and buttressing its form. on a much smaller level, the colony becomes a true siphonophoid individual.

the polyps within the Grand Spire delineate into three basic varieties: Builder Polyps, Neuroid Jellies, and Farseeker Cliones.

the Builders continue with their ages-old job of constructing the walls of the Spire, but have also developed the ability to create massive and beautiful displays of bioluminescence across the surface of the Spire. they use these displays presumably to lure in prey (as some abyssal phou have been observed swimming toward the colony, what they may believe is the sun-lit shallows). It is still unsure what the primary function of the display is, as it seems to serve no directly observable purpose.

the Jellies act as an internal "body" for the colony, and also as cells within a massive siphonophore pseudo-brain. alone, each Jelly is entirely unintelligent but when combined, they form structures similar to the neural pathways in the brains of more sapient creatures. many eons later, it would be hypothesized that the first true thought the colony had as a whole was something similar to "seek; obtain; assimilate"

that thought is carried out through the Cliones. the specialized polyps have developed closed "engulfing bells" designed to capture and keep organic prey and inorganic detritus within. they swim efficiently on two finlike structures at either side, and appear to be able to communicate with each other through their bioluminescent patches. it has been proposed that the Cliones have much further developed their nervous systems, developing brains capable of storing memories. when they return to the colony their memories are absorbed into the archive of the Jelly-brain to be preserved with their caught prey or collected specimens.

I don't know if making a tribal thread about the reefs would be feasible. We haven't been contained to one continent like before as these threads have spanned basically the whole ocean.
The two tribal candidates exists on the other sides of the globe, the hive rohas in the eastern reefs and the storm rohas in the west.
In my opinion, it would be better if these two species would play their part in tribal threads that are related to their own area, for the hive rohas the south eastern continent and for the storm rohas the archipelago, if we return there.

I agree with Nad, the tribal stage of the Hive Roha can be added in with another group from nearby countries. The Storm Roha as well. I think the reefs/ocean are pretty well laid out for now, and give us at least a good start for the things they could encounter out at sea.

Alright, as promised I will now expand on this picture.
Let's start with plants.

1.Tall Hrass. Common sight in the islands, grows in wet and sunny places, which are almost everywhere in the archipelago. Relies on it's abundant numbers for survival.
2.Shrub Frilla. A land bound variant of the oceanic frillas. Dominant plant life in the shores, as it's salt tolerance allows it to exploit the ocean waters. Leaves have a coating of salty crystals, which make them poor food for animals.
3.Tuft Hrass. Common undergrowth of the islands. Exists almost everywhere.
4.Cluster Pozen. A mushroom like plant that both photosynthesizes and also decomposes dead material. Common in wetter regions, although it can be found almost everywhere, but not in as great numbers. Grows clusters of pods filled with bacteria that helps them handle the organic waste they feed on.
5.Carafe Frilla. A frilla variant that is common in the drier regions of the islands, such as the more mountainous areas. Uses it's one long, ewer like leaf to store and catch water for future use.
6.Bulb stalk. A stalk plant with a long trunk and one large cup like leaf.
7.Hanging Hrass. A tree like hrass plant with long leaves. Grow in river banks and swampy areas in abundant numbers.
>>
>>19124687
FUCKING FINALLY!
Anyways, cont.

8.Red Frilla. A smaller frilla tree species which grows small fruits at the ends of it's leaves. These fruits contain small mobile seeds, which can safely grow into more suitable size in the gut of the animal, and then when they are defecated, they have already been moved away from their parent, conserving their energy for finding a suitable location to settle in. These frillas form large forests all across the islands.
9.Razor Hrass. A Hrass plant with a long hard stalk with razor sharp edges that deter any herbivores from completely eating it. Grows in the relatively harsher regions of the islands.
10.Spike Hrass. Much like the razor hrass, these plants have developed sharp protection against herbivores. The plant grows new leaves over the older ones, which in turn become harder and sharper, eventually forming an spiky armor over the plant. Can form in forests, which cause large swathes of terrain to become almost impassable.
11.Funnel Frilla. A large carnivorous plant with long hollow tube like leaves. Contains nectar within these tubes which attracts small critters to feed on it, but the steep walls of the tubes prevent them from escaping, causing them to become food for the plant instead.
12.Flowering Hrass. A common hrass plant that has flowers and nectar. Nuff said.
13.Pot Frilla. A large frilla plant which has numerous nested tubular leaves within it's main leaf pot. It stores great amounts of water within these pots, which attract animals to drink from it. The yellow tentacle like vines contain pollen of the plant, and as the creatures attempt to drink, their hides are smeared with the pollen. This way, the animals help the plant to reproduce.
14. Star cho. A distant cousin of the cho plants. Has manly leaves that help it catch sunlight, hard thick trunk that stores nutrients and long stalks which spread it's pollen to the winds.
>>
>>19124691

Continuing on to the animals.

1.Snake wesck. A wingless wesck descendant that has adapted into slithering in the branches of the plant life of these islands. They also can drink the nectar of the Funnel Frilla safely, as the hook at the tip of their tail allows them to anchor themselves safely at the edge of the leaf, before descending to feed.
2.Colonial andoni. The ancestors of the cultivator andonis which spread to the mainland still exist in the islands. Their hives are not as impressive as their mainland cousins, but they are still very common critters.
3.Snout Kafka. A primitive and blind kafka species that lives in the muddy rivers of the islands, feeding on the detritus at the bottom.
4.Red Wings. Ravenous flying predators that move in loose groups. They kill their prey by cutting it open with their sharp claws.
5.Slime leech. A long, thin parasite, that feeds on the blood and flesh of it's host. It latches on to a creature, and the acidic slime it excretes allows it to burrow itself swiftly under the skin of the host.
6.Skalc. A herbivorous insectoid creature which mostly feed on the undergrowth of the island. They have two powerful claws that they use for both harvesting their food, as well as defending themselves.
7.Wesquito. A wesck creature that mostly feeds on the nectar and other fluids of the island plants, while occasionally also drinking the blood of the other animals.
8.Vaqucar. A small kuckar species that feeds on the micro organisms of the water by filtering them in it's mouth.
9.Fly tick. A small flying andoni creature which feeds on the blood of bigger creatures.
10.Shelldoni. An armored omnivorous andoni species.
11.River flatworm. Nuff said.
12.Predatory wesck. A weskc species that moves in swarms and kills other creatures for food. Has a poison stinger.
>>
>>19124697

13.Lurker andoni. A small and poisonous andoni species that is an ambush hunter. It will wait until a suitable prey comes close enough, upon which it will pounce it an inject it's venom into the prey's body.
14.Bark Stalck. A herbivorous small stalck species that eats the bark and other parts of the plants of this island.
15.Slash Stalck. A predatory stalck creature that hunts in groups during the night. Relatively smart, has pack tactics. It kills the prey by slashing it's body open with it's sharp talons.
16.Rowgar. A big predatory frowg descendant that kills it's prey by stunning them into submission and then ripping them apart.
17.Frowgmagnon. Sapient frowgs. The mainland frowgmen as well as the arctic ones descend from these island frowgmen.
18.Island Hoppas. Semi sapient swimming hoppas that live in small communities across the shores of the islands. Hunt mainly water dwelling creatures such as the stilt walkers, although they sometimes kill bigger, land bound prey.
19.River Skrimp. A recent addition to the island biome. It's a small predatory creature with poisonous mandibles.
>>
>>19124700

20.Jugger. A distant tank like cousins of the Ramels. It has strong jaws and big teeth that allow it to chew trough any plants of the islands. Their shells are surprisingly light, but still very resilient, it's honeycomb like structure contains loads of air, thus allowing these creatures to swim across the small gaps of sea that separate the islands if it becomes necessary.
21.Stilt walker. A semi amphibious roha species that lives in the shallow waters of the archipelago, eating phous and other small critters hiding under the sand and rocks. They can walk on land for a period limited by their skin's ability to absorb oxygen from the air.
22.Island Slizer. An amphibious slizer that lives in the rivers and shallow seas of the archipelago. Their acid spit has gained more adhesive qualities, which allow them to better immobilize their prey on land, giving the slizer enough time to close in, as they are quite slow on the land.
23.Aphdoni. A large andoni species that feeds on plant fluids. They move in small herds for increased protection, using the red appendages on their backs to communicate with each other.
24.Storm Roha. Quite intelligent and social flying roha species that is nearing sapience. They can generate very potent electricity that they use for both hunting and communication.

Feel free to comment and adapt these critters. They are meant to be used by you anyways.

Evola and Hrass seem to be the most dominant plant families in our world. Either that, or the Yantar are, and they're just doing so well that haven't had the need to change at all for millions of years.
>>
>>19125768

To my knowledge, the Yantar is only found in the western continent.
Though there are some variants of it, the base form has stayed relatively unchained over the eons.

Any comments on the animals?
Should I ad more water bound ones? I sort of think that there might be too few swimming critters in the archipelago, though one could simply say that many of the creatures from the reefs also live in the shallow seas around the islands.

File: 1337194280623.png-(60 KB, 800x600, Slasher kafka.png)
60 KB
A splinter species of the sand crusher emerges.

These smaller slasher kafkas have abandoned the hunting tactics of their ancestors by starting to work together during their hunts. Over time, they became much smaller, but far more agile than their lumbering ancestors, which allowed them to outmaneuver and "herd" smaller kafka swarms for easy pickings. Their jaws became elongated which aided them in catching smaller prey, and their eyes grew larger, and moved in their skull to a position that gave them greater depth vision.

These fast and smart predators hunt in small packs, and together they are capable of hunting all kinds of prey, from rohas to kafkas. Their maneuverability gives them an edge over most other predators, who might try to eat them, as although speed wise they are far from the fastest, they can turn and twist themselves and alter their direction in a moment's notice unlike most bigger predators.
>>
>>19125859

I'd think that they'd appear in places other than just the western continent. I remember a world map picture posted before Black Dawn which had a single supercontinent along with the archipelago. The split imaged I believe came after.
Also, the Yantar part was supposed to be a joke. It is an unfortunate thing that many tones of voice cannot be conveyed in text.

For now, I'll spend my next hour working on a cute little tree frowg before going having to do other things.

Bringing up tribal, if we're still going to end up going down the path of cyberpunk dystopia, I think I know what do do with the Burrahn. They'll probably act like the Runners from Mirror's Edge.
>>
>>19126314

Honestly, I had just forgotten about the yantar plants. They probably do exist in other continents as well. Though their base form is kinda hard to change really. They look like giant mushrooms to me, and for some reason, it was always kinda hard for me to come up with new adaptations for them.

Regarding the cyberpunk dystopia, I am down with it. Though it should still wait for some time. We shouldn't jump towards the future that fast. Though the bord cybernetics thing could speed up development at some point...(seriously though, I kinda feel that it would be rather cheap if that happened while we are still in pre industrial era)

As for my plans with the Nad'lun and the Zu-nul. It's kinda strange really, I have much cleared idea what to do with the Zu-nul than with the Nad'lun. Zhen'qual can live as long as she is fed, and now that the Zu-nul have acquired a stable and reliable food source, she could live for thousands of years, her overarching presence and influence would shape the future for a long time. Knixi would also be kinda immortal, as she being a wormborn is doomed to be endlessly reincarnated to further the plans of the Hazuvaat.
Important note, Zhen'qual, isn't benevolent in the least.
In fact, she is kinda evil.
I won't tell how though.
But you all will feel it when we get back to the central continent.

It was just an idea of what I could do when that time comes. It all depends on when they discover another race or become discovered. If nobody ever explores that forest, I could end up with perpetual tribal status. Could be fun. And for the Hu-raan again, Romans. If anyone's noticed, I've to use Roman military ranks.

And just finish my little doodle. Introducing the Striped Treefrowg! They somewhat blend into Frilla fronds, and if something tries to eat one, it gets a nasty shock. These (or a different variety) could appear in the islands, Frilla Jungles, or wherever needed. It's not the best due to being drawn in paint with a mouse set at 2600 dpi. It'd be better if it were set at 3200, as that's what I'm more used to.

Looking at the map, East looks pretty good. Tundra, mountains, swamp, and Frilla Jungle are visible on the map. What sort of species do you think could be found there? I'm guessing some frowg descendant, non-sapient hoppas, stalks, and maybe Pluups. May also be an opportunity to bring back the Yantar. Also, I think a primitive LemUy (post-BD variety of course) would be a nice addition.
All just speculation.
>>
>>19133488

I like your ideas already.
I just hope that there is a floating flouz descendant starting creature. Not a chambered flouz that the tentaflouz evolved from. I am talking about the balloon things from which both the hoppas and the chambered flouz diverged from.
I feel that they had much more potential than we managed to use them for. They were kinda just forgotten during the 3rd evo thread.
I don't even know if they went extinct. I know that the winged flouz did, though I don't mind it really, as they made no sense, seeing how they were supposed to be actively flying creatures, but they lacked eyes.

Are there any other critters that were forgotten?
The stalcks were also kinda abandoned, so it would be good if they made a resurgence in that continent along with the pluups as you suggested.
>>
>>19133563
There are also the Boomers still. I think the original flying flouz were out-competed by the Chuflouz as they were more resistant to puncture.
>>
>>19133651
Yeah, the boomers could use some further development.
You might also be correct about the normal flouz being outcompeted, because now that I really start to think about it, I remember that it was stated so.
Still, one could theorize that some of them adapted to a different niche.
I do think that this world could use some more balloon critters.

I know that there are already many kafkas.
Although I think that the western reef is somewhat lacking in them. And the shallow waters of archipelago could be another new environment for the reef critters.

A splinter species of the flying rohas emerges.

The balloon rohas are slower, bigger and more passive creatures than their ancestors.
The gas chamber of their ancestors started to grow bigger, as it allowed the creature to save energy as it didn't need to work as hard to keep itself afloat.
Over time, the gas chamber became bloated and massive. The balloon rohas only need to lazily move their wings in order to not to descend towards the water. For actual movement, they use their large back flipper.

These big rohas mostly eat plankton and other surface creatures by ensnaring them with the long hairs of their back tentacles, or snatching them from the water with their mouth tentacles.
These creatures usually move in herd like packs, slowly floating above the lush shallow waters of the western reefs and islands.

A new nuro species, the chin beard nuro.

These bearded nuros are chill little fishes who live in the bottom mud of the shallow seas. Under the rocks, corals and soil, they lie and eat the detritus and smaller critters such as phous. Their beard serves as a sensory organ. It allows them to detect edible material very easily while burrowing their heads in the mud.
They are very passive, only rarely bothering to leave the small patch of mud that they have claimed for themselves.

>>
Alright, now that we have a little more of fishies in the sea, we are starting to be ready for the next continent.
The nuro might actually be the critters that most closely resemble earth creatures, seeing that they are pretty much fishes.
Not to say that it's a bad thing really, but we should keep the more alien creatures at the forefront.
These nuro serve very well as a food source for the rest of the creatures.

Good job everyone. We made one hell of an ocean. For future games, I think that this kind of casual creature making would be good. We all have our favorite critters that we like to focus on, but by occasionally coming up with new variants of the species, we cause the ecosystem to be much more lively.

I like the primordial evo games because they always start with very simple base critters that are easy to start to adapt to different directions and splitting off multiple variants of them at the start of the game ensures that there is loads of critters to modify during the whole thread.
The main reason why I haven't participated to the Fortune threads is precisely this. It is brilliantly drawn and run game, but I find it quite hard to get into, as I missed the first thread's start, and every new thread begins with even more complex critters with long history. There isn't much I can think up for the creatures, other than continuing to improve them. I prefer making splinter species, and it is for some reason harder for me in that game.

You specifically mean the north eastern continent, right?
Or will you include both the larger eastern continent along with the smaller one lower south?

Anyways, I might as well as post this half arsed doodle of two Nad'lun boats.
The bigger one is a typical river ship, used to transport all kinds of stuff by the Nad'lun, and for raiding by the Na'suul, though the Na'suul have managed to modify it somewhat by adding rudimentary keels to them, which help them to better steer the ships in the coastal waters. This innovation hasn't jet reached the majority of the Nad'lun settlements, though the coastal ones have started adopting them.
The smaller one is a two man boat, used by everyone. Simple, easy to make and it floats.

I plan on eventually unifying the Nad'lun and Na'suul again, which will ulitmately result in a more outwardly active and internally more varied culture for the tribal hoppas. This process has already started in the coastal settlements, and it will eventually reach the upper river ones as well.

Just a pair of quick notes:

Even a critter that uses high amounts of energy can be pretty intelligent compared to similar species (Think about the jumping spider for example, or orca whales).
Humans are the result of more than one species merging. We were hybrids or something. IDK, if two semi sentinent species are close enough, this may work for them. It would allow them to have a better chance against disease / climate conditions, or maybe take some traits of any parent (growth rate, lifespan, intelligence, energy req, name one).

Disease / climate resistance is as important as specialization, one tends to go against the other sometimes, for example eating the same kind of food, not exploring other places, etc.
I liked the storm rohas' mating dance simply because it allows them to improve enourmously without hitting their population too much.

I propose OP to randomly (maybe rollin dice) assign some environmental pressure, like a new sort of virus, an increment of the planet's temperature, or an ice age. Maybe a small meteor falling somewhere, and creatures must adapt to resist this new threat (smaller creatures with shorter lifespans may evolve faster, or they might be wiped out completely).
>>
>>19136205

Are you ecologyfag by any change?
Regardless,I like your suggestions.

I think that giving an environmental pressure is a better way to drive the changes, instead of just making a mutation table, although the later can also work in certain situations.

Assuming that you are ecologyfag, I have a question.
I have been on the fence between making the storm rohas monogamous, so that when a male manages to impress a female by catching the lightning bolt will mate for life with her, or making them polygamous, so that a male who manages to cause the best light shows gets all the females.
I don't know which one would make more sense for them.
>>
>>19136255
Not ecologyfag, in fact, litfag.

You can have something of both. Both have their pros and cons.
Being monogamous means there's a female selection. Appart of being appealing to the neckbeardom, it would mean that your species would have slightly reduced disease resistance vs a huge increase in energy efficiency and general physique.
You only make the full mating once, and the rest of the time you only prove yourself soaring through the clouds. It also allows for family, filial structures within your already alluring nest idea (further social boost, slight int boost). If orphaned ones are adopted, survival chances of the group will skyrocket because you're getting both group conduct and keeping some genetic pool, just in case.

For poly-groups the situation its much different. A dominant male can get laid anytime but by no means the little ones are his; in those system the female tends to cheat with other males which are more cunning, can disguise themselves as non-threatening or any other desirable trait. It offers a large resistance boost and a medium one to their physical traits. (many offspring from dominant male, no female selection) It would also mean a larger population because loose hierarchy means dominant male can be susbstitued without the pack taking a big hit (this is HUGE).

There are also species that have both kinds of bonds, and their individuals choose them based on a number of circumstances. there was a deviant art thread about this thing (too simplistic but cool for EVO purposes).
>>
>>19136255
About tables:
Mutation tables are cool because they represent traits that arise among an species, mathemathical simulations say they expand even if they are minimal. These traits however should be more general and not in all cases would need to be justified by a picture. For example, you roll for improved digestion, it could mean
>shorter / longer track because richer / poorer foods (draw)
>an specialized digestive tract, (explain)
>or something as simple as muscles and nerve action not to puke when you're hunting. (just need the roll)

Environmental pressure however requires creativity, like your beloved critter needs to adapt FAST or it'll die / lose rep. Such changes would require both drawings and explanations, and may open paths that weren't considered before. If a player doesn't like these changes, their critter may always drop them once the danger passes (probably more fun, it's not a suggestion for enviro-smite, that would be douchefaging).
>>
>>19136406

Polygamous species usually, at least in my knowledge, don't have the kinds of mating dances that I have envisioned for the storm rohas. If I am correct, polugamous species usually have few males compete against each other, until one becomes dominant. Usually, the gender dimorphism is also bigger in these species.
The rohas don't actually fight each other, as their mating dance is more of an showcase of their own resilience and viability, not their strength over other males. They do not control the lightning at all, it's quite luck based. The females determine the males viability based on how strong bolt they can survive from.
This would, in my opinion make them more monogamous.

The idea is basically that the males and females all gather under the storm clouds, and the males start trying to cause a lightning bolt to strike themselves. If they succeed and survive, they may be able to impress some of the females.
But the lethality of this practice would mean that there are always more females than there are males, which kinda puts it towards the polygamous social structure.

I am still kinda undecided on this.
>>
>>19136469

I also agree that the mutation table results should be more general.
I liked them in the original land evo threads, in which the hoppas were born. They were quite simplistic, such as getting bigger, or smarter, poison and so on.

Simply rolling for new body parts is kinda iffy for me.

I think that ideally, there would be both environmental pressures as well as adaptation tables. The former would allow for more player creativity, while the later would mix things up and cause unexpected results, which in my opinion are a good thing. The tribal hoppas became sentient due to a roll. I didn't even plan to make them sapient before that. I think that these types of tables are useful as they may put new ideas into the heads of the players and take the creatures to unexpected and interesting directions.
>>
>>19136555
I would recommend for you to try monogamous structure with a few rogue members founding their own colonies. This could lead to more subspecies of storm roha, and eventually crossbred, like a ring species.

There are species that compete between their males by arranging nests, controlling key spots of defence/food/light, singing, their own appereance, and bravery contests (how close you get to predators before they munch you). This is both for poly and mono species, although mono rituals are more elaborate; and in some cases not involving violence or danger as much.

Lightning could be perfect for bravery thus middle ground for both, leaning towards mono: The creatures may not know where and how strongly the lightning will strike, but they have an instict for it, so they kinda get probability.

I imagine them swimming in the air, part snake like, part raptor like, rising to greet the largest thunderstorm in the hemisphere. If they don't go high enough, they won't be noticed, or may be discarded. If they go too high, they'll be fried. The trick is going as dangerous as you can without dying, choosing carefully the cloud that wil offer the most spectacular shock by pure virtue of nose and luck, and go for it with speed and endurance. The more males competing the more dangerous the dance will become.
Then, males come down...

Females start circling the victorious, tired males. The successful ones get the most females around them.
The f's use their best movements for hunting and evading, showing off their bodies irridiscent with energy. If she's healthy enough, has original movements, is swift, the male will take her and both will make a short dance before rising again to mate amidst the clouds, female leading. This time they won't go as high, however; but this electro-rgams bonds them for the rest of their lives.

You're welcome dude. My english sucks balls, I'm actually surprised someone took the time to read my textwalls full of typos n' shit.

Hey guys how about we make documentary entries for these creatures?
>>
>>19137285

That would be cool if we did that, but I for one am not sure if I have the time for it.
There are loads of creatures on this planet.
I don't even know exactly how many, but I'd estimate that we already have somewhere around 50 critters on this world, which is laughably small for an actual planet, but still far too many for properly manage in this kind of medium. Not to mention all the plant life we got.
Making documentary entries for all of them would take some effort.

Not to say that I don't like the abdunance of life in this planet. If anything, it makes the whole world seem more realistic. It also allows for many candidates for evolving.

I didn't notice any glaring typos in your posts, btw. Don't sweat it. Most people who go full grammar nazi on your as for minor typos are just trolls.
You described the scenario I already had in my heal for the mating dance almost perfectly, and even improved upon it. I couldn't have done it any better than you already did.

I am going to expand on this a little bit.

Just tell me if this is becoming too silly, but I myself found this idea quite amusing.

The beard nuro has quite pronounced gender dimorphism. There are 3 types of bearded nuro.

The bottom dwelling bulbous and strong male neckbeard nuros who build nests out of mud and protect their territory fiercely. Their beard is very big as they have to rely on it for locating food.

The smaller, more lithe males, who don't have territories, and instead move in groups of many males. They don't spend that much time on the sea floor, and thus they have only a stub of a beard. It helps them to sense each other's movements. Their eyes are covered with dark, reflective lenses that they can use to distract predators when the whole swarm of these males cause many reflections of the sunlight to scatter everywhere.

The female ones who don't live in the bottom, but within the corals. They have big eyes to keep on guard for predators, as well as locating food. They have only few hairs at the sides of their head, instead of a full beard.

The reproductive practices of these creatures are strange. The females prefer the lithe males for mating, but these males do not protect their young, unlike the bottom dwelling ones. Because of this, a game of reproductive war has emerged between these gender types. The bottom dwellers try to attract females to their nests, the females try to cheat out of their end of the deal by laying very few eggs, and the swarm males try cock block the big male by harassing it constantly.

Despite this reproductive clusterfuck, a stable populations of both males manages to always in the end establish themselves. The large amount of swarm males is reduced by heavy predatation, while the bottom dwellers are often left undisturbed. Maybe they taste bad?

Foul odor maybe?
Now I think of how this could drive the Leaflurkers crazy. Able to smell everything in fifty feet, and being surrounded by neckbeards...

No need to thank me.
Your post inspired me to draw this. You described the courtship rituals of these creatures far better than I could have hoped.
I should thank you.

Now, I must go to sleep.
It's already over half past 1 am here in Finland.
As the summer is coming, if I won't go asleep soon, the sun will start to rise and it will be like it's the middle of a day even if time is around 4 am, making any attempt at sleep hopeless.

Night fellas! IG will probably have the next thread up by tomorrow.
