Or, Are They Still On Namek?

    >Previous Threads:

While Dan took a nap, Dr. M thoroughly thrashed the Red Star's new Avatar with psychic spears, deorbited satellites, and the Gate of Babel-rebar, before ultimately finishing it off by throwing it into the Box at high speed, which causes SFX to happen and the day to be won. Dan then recovered, and was given a medical miracle to heal Anna, who was severely injured by Dr. M. Anna was taken to the hospital, declared to have been slightly possessed and all that stuff being only "kinda-sorta" her fault, and could probably get on with her life. Then the government swept everything under the rug because that is how they roll, apparently. Regis then gave Anna a plot coupon via Dan, and the day was generally saved.

(So if you haven't read last thread, you probably should because some of this stuff is not going to make sense out of context)

After talking to Anna, you decide to head home and finally sleep. Roxane is still asleep in the chair, and not wanting to wake her, you tell Captain Skinner to tell her you left when she wakes up. You head back to your dorm room on foot, taking a meaningful, introspective walk, pass all the cordons and police tape put up around the impact craters, and crash in your bed, and sleep about seven hours, waking sometime after 1 in the afternoon.

While you were asleep, the news story broke, and the city gave an official statement to the press, going with what the Government said to say. The city was then force to swallow their pride, and thank the Miss Mystery, the US Navy, and several civilian heroes who "wished to remain anonymous". Then they turned it over to the FBI, who were force to thank the city for their cooperation in the ongoing efforts to capture Dr. Moreau, and those same anonymous heroes. The Ashwood family also gave an official statement, neither 'confirming or denying" their involvement during the "dashing biplane duel with a dragon". That afternoon, while you have brunchfast, Johnny's version of the story breaks in the school newspaper, upselling "Javelin's" involvement, and the aide of a body of mystically oriented students. All in all, while not denying that the city was in danger, all the statements do downplay how close the world came to destruction, and also trying not to make the whole situation a witchhunt for Anna.

And of course, campus buildings are closed for the rest of the week, for repairs.

    >If you'd specifically like ask what happened to a specific character, or do something specific in the next couple days, say so. Otherwise we're skipping ahead a few.

You meet up with the Evoker's club that afternoon, and they are all fine. Little tired, little stressed, but ultimately fine.

The following day, Blackstone heals Jeanne's collar, but warns her not to stress it for a while and let it heal completely. That is also the day Anna is discharged from the hospital, and the day the Evoker's all meet her. The situation is really awkward until Anya of all people gives Anna a hug and everything is cool.

Then Blackstone, Jeanne and Anna go off and have a long conversation about maybe working on some Close-Quarters fighting practice.

Like, Just hang out, or do you want to take her on an actual date?

Obviously, it makes sense that she's the one to sympathize with Anna, but Anya is a 15 year old girl, and Dan knows enough about her to know she's not the hugging type.

But sometimes, you just need to hit that hug button.

After giving Roxane the Wednesday to relax, and let the bruises on her ankle fade from where she was chained to a ceiling, you decide to take her out to dinner Thursday, to a very nice restaurant.

And you don't have to pay for it because you yourself were invited to dinner by, of all people, the Mayor. The Mayor and the Deputy Mayor and their spouses are present, as is the District Attorney, The Police Commissioner, Captain Skinner, Ashwood, and to your surprise, Professor Blackstone and detectives Howard and Philips also show up. It's a pretty big dinner, and you and Roxy are a little awkward rubbing elbows with such important people, but the ice is broken a little when the Mayor gives to a gift of a number of Cuban cigars. He says he, "Always makes sure to appreciate people who save his bacon, and the collective bacon of my constituents". Captain Skinner provides you with a lighter with an interesting engraving on it, a stylized skull inside a ring formed by a serpent devouring its own tail.

You later decide the Mayor is an alright guy.

The Feds take Miles back to Illinois for his original museum break-in, which involves less assault and dead bodies and golems made of dead bodies, but the city has to drop their charges against him. I'm sure he will NEVER BE HEARD FROM AGAIN.

At the dinner Ashwood will actually explain that he fought the Voice for a good few minutes (a remarkably long time for the plane to remain stable), but then a stray blow damaged the engine, and he was force to bail as the plane when down in flames. He was caught up in a tree while all the shit went down.

Friday morning dawns. Now that the world is no longer threatened, you have your whole summer free to look forward too. Free reign to practice your powers, research new and interesting magics, and sharpen your skills.

But first, you've got a goal you've been thinking of for a while now.

To journey to the Vermont Exclusion Zone site, plunge the depths of the destroyed Cyrean FOB there, and return with a fortune in salvaged gear, and maybe some new superpowers. One question remains.

    >Where do you begin?

    3. Trip to Regis+other shops for supplies, make sure we're stocked up

    >1. Get roster - check J&R are still free, maybe ask if anyone else from the evoker's club wants to come

Johnny and Roxy are still in. The Evokers are, however, out. None of them are too keen on entering a former nuclear strike area to dig up some alien technology. It's not really their thing.

    >2. Research the place, environment, cyrean tech we're likely to run into, how to identify shit...

Dan has a pretty good internal understanding of Cyrean tech, especially their useful military hardware, as part his genetic memory, to identify stuff. He's also absorbed enough information to field check the hardware, to tell how well its working. I'll do a roll in a second to see how much Dan can find out over like a day, so if you want to throw something in for that, say so now.

    >3. Trip to Regis+other shops for supplies, make sure we're stocked up

Done. If you want something specific, say so, otherwise we'll just leave being properly stocked to Dan's judgement, maybe with some advice from Dad.

Nowhere, really. Johnny could borrow his dad's pickup truck, but that might be a little small, so you might need to rent something.
    >> Anonymous 04/27/12(Fri)19:11 No.18888766
Hmm, how much would we need to rent a good truck for this? Keeping in mind that we run a pretty good risk of it being damaged in some way during our rental.
    >> Anonymous 04/27/12(Fri)19:24 No.18888901
Given that we're planning on looting this place and have to transport a large mech, we ought to rent something bigger, we want enough room to stuff all of our ill-gotten goods.

How much is it going to cost to rent, hopefully if we lose the truck or it gets seriously damaged we'll be able to cover the cost with the money from alien hardware.

    (2x8 and 2x10 on Research)

The Exclusion Zone is a roughly circular patch of land containing several square miles sandwiched in a valley between some mountains in Vermont. The Vermont Natl. Guard holds the entrance by road, and also regularly patrols the posted boundaries, but not so strictly that it's round the clock surveillance. Mostly the edge is just signage and ankle-high spools of razor wire. They don't patrol the interior regularly, but do random sweeps occasionally, and have look outs who check inside at regular intervals. Since they do this more for people's own safety than anything else, unless you're actively trying to smuggle Cyrean tech out, mostly they'll just escort you back to the edge. Radiation levels are low above ground, though most of the "standing" Cyrean structures have been picked clean. In the underground areas, built below the surface or into the mountains, it depends on how close an actual warhead strike it was. The bombing was mostly to prevent somebody from just moving in and using it as a base again, not a comprehensive demolition. Just don't stand in the middle of a crater, or drink the ground water, and you should be alright.

Now, because of the government salvage bounties on recovered Cyrean tech (To encourage people to sell it to the government rather than hoard it), it is perfectly legal to actually salvage there. You'll just want to check in with the outpost commander, show some ID, say how long you plan on staying, sing some waivers saying you wont sue the government if you get radiation poisoning. Mostly they just want to know you're there (so they can send out a search party), and also they'll want to know what you're bringing back, so that if it shows up on the black market, they know who's door to knock on.
    >> Anonymous 04/27/12(Fri)19:35 No.18889013
Sounds reasonable, does the Hammer have anything that'll help with keeping radiation out or will it just be for muscle?

Get a decently sized pick-up or U haul, do this the legal route. The government likes us so far I'd rather stay on their good side and not drag our buds into criminal activity.
    >> Omega !Q7t.srvWZ6 04/27/12(Fri)19:42 No.18889069

I don't think getting a cargo chopper would really be any better than the truck, since you guys have no idea how much swag you'll find to haul, in addition to needing to carry the Hammer the whole way.

It is a piece of Cold War era technology, so the armor is designed to be hardened against that kind of thing. It's not perfect, so it'll probably just blunt high doses, but if you need it to walk through an irradiated stream or puddle, it'll be fine.
    >> Anonymous 04/27/12(Fri)19:42 No.18889075

Helicopters can go over any terrain and carry anything. Including other helicopters. And trucks with mechs in. And you can't use a truck to lift dead mutants out of the way.
But it'd use a load of fuel and be really expensive and we can't even fly one (unless "Drive" is some kind of universal vehicle operating skill?) so it's probably not worth it. You win this round.

You acquire a U-Haul, and decide to set out Saturday morning, spending most of friday securing all your supplies. You set off fairly early in the rented truck, you take the first leg of the trip, but Johnny does the second set, and all total, its about a 10 hour trip there, counting stops. Since it's already the early evening, you park yourselves in a small town near the exclusion site, since you don't really want to plunge the irradiated depths of an abandoned alien military base after dark.

The next morning, you arrive at the main entrance to the site. Guardsmen stop you, ask your business, and you all make the proper check-ins and sign the right papers, and are waved on through. Before you drive in and park along the side of a now disused valley road, the guard at the gate passes you a pill container, filled with radiation tablets.

    (2x4 and 2x5 to Remember)

Caches of technology, not counting the main armory (which was most assuredly targeted directly by the strike) would be underground, probably in areas actually farther away from the main armory. The idea behind the caches they set during the invasion was in case primary supplies were destroyed or cut off from.

(2x9 and 3x8 on Psychic Senses)

You stand on a slight rise and look out over the Exclusion Zone, scattered remnants of buildings, clusters of woods, oh, and the occasional bomb crater. You wonder if Bethesda will use this place as a model for the environments in the next Fallout game.

But you cast that aside and focus on opening your senses. The landscape takes on a very interesting quality. The saturation drops out, giving the place a very sepia tone, and the sun almost seems too-bright. The bomb craters and other areas take on a sickly, radium green aura, your mind physically translating the scarring presence of the radiation as such. Faint echoes of people past shimmer here and there in the valley. Nothing seems to stick out to you, but you are surrounded by the slighty tingling sensation of psychic technology.

Not really. You'd just, at best, have access to aerial reconnaissance photos, or maybe sat maps (Since it was in 1992 that they invaded) of before, and then, y'know, modern google maps, so you can't really see the underground areas. Basically, big obvious places or hidden, out-of-the-way places. I'm thinking the latter. Hell, can we Evocate to figure out where the tech is? Our armour should help find something, if we need a focus, although our nervous system at this point MAY be a better one.

The Hammer stalks over the ground, optics twirling to survey the landscape. The external speaker's open up and Johnny says from inside, "Know where we're going?" You give a slight shake of your head. "Not quite. But if we get closer I can get us going in the right direction." You turn to look up at the hammer. "Just keep the X-Ray and the Radar ready, we'll need 'em soon enough." Roxane also comes out of the back of the U-Haul, wearing a relatively simple, and not bulky, suit which covers her from head to toe, including the orange plastic bubble helmet. "What?" She says when you look at her. "I'm practicing safe science. Plus this has a little utility belt I can hang my stuff from and everything." You decide not to comment further, and set out. Or rather, you and Roxy use the handholds on the side of the Hammer, and it heads out since it covers ground faster.

    (Huh, only 2x5. On 8d.)

For about two hours, you crisscross the area, trying to find, for lack of a better term, psychic hotpots. Your delay is mostly caused by a couple of false leads, where you get close to a big trace of psychic technology, then find yourselves moving too close to an impact site to be safe. This slows the process down, until you follow a smaller signature, (to your feeling) but one that lies in a direction away from a lot of the surface buildings which were critical targets.

The area you bring yourself too ends up being a little barren, on a leveled off area of a hill-top. The closest Cyrean structure is basically a pillbox, and about 20 yards away. The repeating multipurpose plasma repeater that you know would be mounted there long since taken away. There are other structures, but father away, but as far as you can tell, you're standing right where there's a decent sized stockpile of Cyrean stuff.

    >How do you go about finding it?
    >> Omega !Q7t.srvWZ6 04/27/12(Fri)22:23 No.18890800

A system that doesn't normally have relationships added into it? I stole that mechanic from a different ORE game, because I liked the feel a lot better for what I was trying to do here.

Not seeing any obvious sign of an entrance in the immediate area, you hop down from the Hammer, and Roxy does the same. You wrap on the side of the Power Armor. "Fire up the Radar, buddy. Got a hotspot here." The little optic ball nods up and down. "Depth and density coming up!" You and Roxy step back as the little Radar dish starts spooling up and spinning around, because everything is better with spinning. Roxane puts a hand on your shoulder, and in an aside says, "Uh, did we tell the National Guard we had Radar?" You shrug. "Well, they'll find out in a second."

You observe for a couple of couple of minutes, while Johnny takes the reading. Then he turns off the Radar, and turns the armor back around to face you. "Yeah, we've got a room, or something, down here. Looks about the size of a small storage room, or big supply closet. " He gestures behind him with one of the arms. "If I'm reading this read-out right, there's a door concealed at the base of that side of the hill." That being the side opposite the one you climbed up. "Intact?" you ask. "It's all a uniform shape, yeah. Maybe a dozen feet straight down." Roxane frowns and puts a hand up to her suit mask. "Huh, probably not worth it to just dig there..." She says.

    >Okay, found something. How do you want to get in?

    Hill. Is sloped.

Also hill is taller than 12', but the room is probably, like hidden in as exact a center of the hill as they could.

An external door like that, in addition to probably being concealed, will most definitely be locked, but it would have been secured with just alarms or physical sentries (Cyreans were never big on automatic) so that shouldn't be a problem.
    >> Anonymous 04/27/12(Fri)23:04 No.18891249

You just slide back on down to the spot where the door is supposed to be. Johnny uses the hammer to mark the spot int he hillside where it should be, the the other two back off as you crack your knuckles and get ready to work.

Using a good ole' earth magic punch, which moves aside all the earth you need to reveal a hexagonal Cyrean door. You recognize it as an "airlock" type door, meaning its very well secured and armored than internal doors. Johnny takes the hammer and knocks on the door a few times, but it doesn't budge. You gesture for him to move back, and roll up your right sleeve.

You move your hand in close, and power up your new Psi Lance. The energy courses from the core implant in your torso in the form of lines which seem to radiate an aura around your arm, before the force lances out in a beam from your palm. It punches through the central lock mechanism of the door with a flash, and Johnny uses the gripping tools of the Hammer to pry the door open.

You peer into the darkness. Or at least, you assume it's the darkness, because your vision is all grey-scale when you look in there. "Want me to sweep it?" Johnny says, but you shake your head. "Nah, if there's anything dangerous in here, I'm not sure I want you bathing it in X-Rays. Just turn up the headlights, and follow me." You turn around and look the Hammer up and down. "You bring up the rear."

You slowly step into the room. After a few steps, your become more accustomed to the difference, and you spot the slots for emergency lighting in the room, which aren't on. That's not right. Roxane follows behind you, using her very FPS headlamp to see. You summon the wisp to cast blue-white light around the area, which is more helpful. The Hammer barely squeezes in after you, and has to kind of oddly squad to walk down here. You walk maybe a twelve, fourteen feet, then find another octagonal door (RETCON), only this one has no door. Like, at all. The three of you squeeze into what looks like the room Johnny pinged.

Only to find it rather empty.

The layout looks like an entrance room, or ready area. There are actually a couple of long benches off to the side, like for people to sit in while they put on or remove gear, but you don't see any other features. "Huh." You say. You look around closer, as the Hammer tucks into this room as well, and is able to stand up again. "Well, this still feels like the spot..." You say, pretty sure you're still near some psychic stuff. Roxane walks on over to the far end of the room, to what looks like a computer terminal. "Hold on, maybe it's past this room," she points at a door at the back of the chamber, "Or under it or something. I'll see if I can get this thing power." You turn away to examine the room closer. "Hey!" Roxane says to you. "Don't go anywhere, Dan. I don't read Cyrean." Right. You turn back to head over to her, when the The Hammer puts a heavy leg into a central area of the room. The floor creaks ominously. You have enough time to say, "Well, that's not good." Before there's a sharp cracking sound, your stomach flies up into your throat, and you tumble into blackness.

"Ow..." You say, rubbing your head. You sit back up, and look around.

"Hey, are you okay, down there?" Roxane says, her headlamp scanning the floor. "Yeah." You cough back up, and look at the ceiling. It looks very bare, and stripped. And kind of thin, now that you think about it. "This room isn't complete." You shout back up, as The Hammer rights itself. "What?" Roxy says. "The room isn't finished. They must have been building it when they pulled out. I bet the connecting tunnel doesn't go anywhere yet, either. It's why nobody's found this place before now." At this point, you actually sit up, and look around.

And find yourself staring at what must be the largest collection of Cyrean objects you've seen in your life. Hexagonal pallets are stacked in one corner, layered with Power Modules. Racks lined up against the walls contain rows of Cyrean weapons. Lockers containing suits of armor are set up here, along with crates probably loaded with smaller gear, and ammunition.
