    YOU ARE ALEX RASTON.

Currently your team is 1-1 in a best of three match against Team Mo Betta, in the Vegas Arena. You're standing in the abandoned city of Bullhead.

Looking around, at the city, you thank whatever higher power happens to be listening that none of the buildings are too tall. So while Dervish has plenty of room to run and hide, the vertical isn't a major concern at the moment.

You look around your half of the city, and consider the area. Your opponent's starting out on the western side of town, with his back to the river. Unfortunately, both of your cores are built for constant movement, so that's not going to help for long.

    You consider your options.

[ ] Get high, jump up. Even if you don't spot him it'll certain draw him to you.
[ ] Stay low, play hide and seek in the buildings. Sure his weapons could take you fast and hard, but he's not exactly built for endurance either.
[ ] Back up, find a wide open spot on the outskirts of the battle-zone. Force him to attack you, from one direction.
    [ ] Other.

[X] Back up, find a wide open spot on the outskirts of the battle-zone. Force him to attack you, from one direction.

This makes his radar invisibility less of a problem, the other options he could be in literally any direction, try to find an open spot where he'll have to engage at medium range, enough time that we can spot and avoid the karasawa but going with his melee gives us plenty of time to fill him with holes.

    Medium range is correct.

Find a relatively open space with enough cover to not get fucked by his rifle immediately.
    >> AC-Guy 04/26/12(Thu)23:13 No.18877904
You do a couple of quick bursts backwards around a couple buildings. There's just enough room between the edge of town and the edge of the ring to bring you into optimal firing range. So since you're nice ad tucked into a corner so to speak, he has no angle of approach you can't spot.

You see a flicker of movement past some buildings. It wasn't big enough to be a core though.... On an hunch you force a quick ping on your radar.

And it goes fucking crazy. A couple hundred tiny contacts? Then you spot the arc. He just put a cloud of small impact activated grenades right over top of you. You can't dodge back, there isn't enough room to not give him a technical win via ring-out. You don't have enough room to go left or right and effectively dodge. So the only option is forward.... right into the path of the fully charged Karasawa he's holding as he hops above the building lines.

Luckily, you were already starting to move when he appeared, having spotted something of his strategy in advance.

    It hits you suddenly.

Boosters. He's got really powerful booster units on his core. And looking around at the gathering dusk, you remember that it gets cold in the desert at night. DAMN cold. Thinking fast, you tap into the midair drone Laurie deployed during his fight. You activate it's thermals for the area, and lay it over your radar display.

it's not a solid dot, but vivid, rapidly fading slashes from where he's been activating and cutting power to his thrusters. He's still a short step removed from being a damned ghost, but at least now you aren't flying completely blind.

You take a moment to consider your options...

[ ] Go right after him, take away his control over the fight's tempo.
[ ] Fake him out, act like you're looking for him. try and hold the surprise as long as possible.

Fake him out. Taunting stands a good chance of backfiring with the equipment he's got, and going after him makes us lose our only real advantage. If we can wait for an opening before we let loose, we might just stand a chance of winning this.

What I wanna know is how the hell he's mounting all this stuff. That's gotta be a huge amount of drain he's running on for all that; actually running a Karasawa/Moonlight build is an incredibly difficult task in virtually every AC game, or at least all the ones I can think of.

You begin to move around, as though looking for him. First you go in the wrong direction, then you head right to him, then away. You slowly sweep alleyways looking for him. Watching your impromptu radar, you can see him moving in loose circles around you at about half speed, looking for an opening. Using it as a guide you can see him.

Some part of you is reminded of a shark... or a hawk even. A long, lazy circle looking for the perfect opening.

    He opens up the coms.

"Hey there Alex. Surprised you slipped my trap."

"Me too, a little bit. Spotted what you were doing in time, thankfully."

    "Barely."

"I'm guessing somebody's tried that on you before?"

"Couple times. It's actually a decent plan, if your opponent's never seen it before. Right easy to fuck up if you know what you're doing though."

    "Yeah. So where are you?"

He laughs. "Like I'm just going to toss out my biggest edge like that."

"I thought your biggest edge was your gun."

"This lil ol' thing? Nah, it's hilariously powerful but it really only works good on the sly. You have to pick your shots, especially with the cool-down time and the low ammo count."

"Giving out all your secrets now?"

"Nah, just keeping you distracted while I line up my next shot."

"Heh. Who the hell said anything about my rifle?"

Then you spot the move. He's put a bunch of those little grenades in the air again. Some sort of a staggered launch, meant to herd you. Looking at your radar, you see he's taking advantage of a nice wide street to one side to pick up some speed. When you dodge back, out of the way he plans to hit you in the open.

Only problem is that put him in the open, in a straight line, headed right towards you.

You boost back into the open street, and see him still a fair distance away. You'd give anything to see his face at that very moment.

Oh man, if we broke that guy's Karasawa...

I don't know how much Karas cost (in this universe anyway), but I can't help feeling like even if he wins, he's not coming out ahead on that score.
    >> AC-Guy 04/27/12(Fri)00:52 No.18879293
Your two guns blast into him. Your rifle does less damage than you hoped, but your beam cut a deep gouge in the side of his core. You didn't have time for a second shot, boosting out of the way before he could hit you with that blade.

He spins, and his rifle flickers for a second, before his core starts powering down.

"Shit," he grunts into the mic, obvious pain in his voice. "You win man, now back the hell off in case I can't quench the reactor before it goes critical."

You heed his advice and back off to a safe distance. After a very tense ten seconds, he breaths a sigh of relief. "Shit. I'll need a new generator, but at least I'm not gonna go up in a mushroom cloud. Drag me back over to the tram will ya? Let's have a little chat on the way back to Vegas."
    >> AC-Guy 04/27/12(Fri)00:52 No.18879297
    >>18879293

You oblige him and within ten minutes, all the cores are locked down for transport, and you find yourself in a lounge on the tram looking at your three opponents faces for the first time.
The one from the Tank AC that took down Dave's core is a taller, broadly-built man with a deep tan, and black wrap-around shades. The one who fought Laurie: About the same height, but with a lighter frame and somewhat paler skin, though not quite 'white'. Between them is the man you know only as Dervish thus far. He's a hair over six foot tall, and wearing the same basic jeans/t-shirt combo as his team-mates. His skin looks like he doesn't see enough sun, and he's got a sort of quiet calm intensity about him that reminds you uncomfortably of Nine-Ball as he looks over at you.

"So, you managed to see me coming. How? I know for a fact I'm invisible to radar."

"You think I knew where you were?"

"I know it. You were already turning to face me when you hit the street. Only possible way you would've had time to line up a shot."

"Fair waring," The Tank AC's pilot says. "If you don't tell him, mother-fuckers going to brood over it in the hangar until he figures out what went wrong."

[ ] Tell him. He's been pretty cool so far, and something like that could get him killed in a real fight, besides, more friends are nice.

"Sure. I was planning to offer anyway."

"Thermals man. Desert night gets pretty chilly sometimes. with that booster array you lit up on the thermals like a Christmas tree."

He looks thoughtful for a long moment and then nods. "Not the sort of thing that comes up often, and since we tested it during the day time, we didn't spot the issue. Rather obvious in retrospect.... Thermal dampeners. It'll cut the speed a bit, but it's already almost too fast to control. Better control, less chance of being detected." having apparently come to that decision, he relaxes and the almost suffocating tension in the room fades quickly. "So then. I don't think we were every properly introduced: I'm Mike. Mr Sunglasses at night here-" He indicates the pilot of the Tank AC "- Is also Mike. But we call him Steve, because I had the name first. The other one is Tony."

"I don't even get a dismissive wave in my direction?"

"You got your ass kicked in like 30 seconds, and apparently can't tell a man from a woman."

"Alright, first look with no warning, would you know? Especially if they were introduced as 'Laurie'?"

"Yep. Then again, i have spent a little too much time in the dark corners of the internet."

"Like, how did you guys meet?"

"Well, we're all from Alaska originally. We knew each other coming out the ass end of High School. These two went and joined the local military, ended up as Wolves operating out of the Brooks Range."

You nod. After the world went to shit, people just started caring less and less about Alaska. It took the remnants of communist China trying to conquer it to kick-start some global reactions.

They landed on the North slope, trying to seize control of the Oil-Fields for their people. The various Oil companies invested in the area knew that if they lost this it would be their collective death bell. When the U.S. Federal Government refused to get involved due to the ground not really being 'worth it' in this new world where you could put a reactor on a truck and provide reliable power cheap and for almost a century.

Big Oil fucking LOST it, got their hands on some of the best Core tech of the day, and built 15 mechs, which they staffed with former Air force and Navy pilots with the Alaskan Governor's permission. They went north and rapidly destroyed the small Chinese fleet, and the Alaska took it's new cheap reliable power and vast mineral resources and told the rest of the U.S. to fuck off and seceded from the union.
    >> AC-Guy 04/27/12(Fri)01:44 No.18879876
    >>18879867

Two days later, the same Team of pilots, now formally known as the "Alaska Wolf Pack" repelled the small Navy probe meant to scare them back in. When Canada made their play to claim the ground their offense was not only halted, but ended with the Border pushed back so that most of Yukon territory belongs to them now.

The Wolf Pack is today known as THE BEST dedicated Core unit in the world, due to their insane training standards. They don't even let you apply unless you're a rated B rank.

"Anyway, I was actually doing humanitarian work when a bunch of Ice Devils, Think Black-Rock: only after their warm cuddly side had been frozen off, showed up in the Village I was in, and took everybody to make sure their gene-pool stayed diverse. They were more or less planning to RAPE the next generation out of us. First night there I cut myself loose, and find out the ONLY CORE THEY HAD was unguarded. So I stole it, and thanks to a naturally high synch rate, was able to pilot it well enough to kill them and save my fellow captives. They made me an honorary pack member for my efforts, and let me keep the Mech. Bout a year later, everything's quieted down, and the three of us were never really ones for the quiet life. So we skipped down here with another friend of ours with a natural talent for piloting and running tac-net and started trying to make some bank."

    "How's that been working out?"

"Damned decent. We managed to get some solid cores together, and put almost three million away for a rainy day. Shit, if these things weren't so expensive to run we could almost retire."

I think he meant 'bullshit' as in 'talk bullshit', not 'call bullshit on his 'decent' core'.

I mean, the Karasawa wasn't top-tier in Armored Core 3 (especially Nexus) and in AC5 it's kind of impractical. The Moonlight is a more open and shut case, though. It's possible these weapons are more prolific in this universe than the games, so he might not be lying. And this IS a very skilled special forces team, not just some run-of-the-mill core squad like we had at Hope.

You hand off responsibility of loading your cores off onto your little sister. And bless her heart, she thinks it's a step up instead of grunt work.

Ah well, always time to crush her dreams later.

The three of you walk over to the Tourney board and see that your opponent for the next round are either going to be the Barnwhisky Bandits or.... the Tunnel Snakes? You idly wonder if they're at all connected to those thugs you chased off Cass the other night.

Getting a look over their load-outs, the Bandits are covered in giant ass guns, and the Snakes seem to be mostly close-quarters specialists.

After gleaning this much, your sister tells you that the cores are loaded. Getting back to the transport you see they're also loaded correctly.

    She works fast.

You see your mother approaching you with Elsie, and Mooch not far behind them, already curing up a storm at the repair work he's going to have to do.

"Alex," Your mother says "Are you three alright?"

It occurs to you that she's probably never seen Mech combat in person like that.

She relaxes slightly, but you can see she's still tense. She never really was FOR you joining the Militia. Now that she's seen what a mech fight actually looks like...

"Alright." She says. "What're you doing now?"

"Getting the cores transported back to the hangar for repairs. Mine's more or less fine, but Laurie's got some dings and Dave...." You look at the legs. Dave never clocks in below a 45. That HAD to suck. "Dave needs a little more repair work."

"And a stiff drink." Your mother looks a little shocked at this.

"It's alright, I'll make sure he's sober in time for the next round." You interject, not quite reading her properly.

"Alright...." she says. "I'll be sure to catch the next match on TV. Zack probably needs my help organizing volunteers." She then walks to the car you drove here in, and gets a ride with Morgan who says she'll meet the rest of the team at the base.

As you climb onto the transport, Elsie grabs you and pulls you to one side. "She's worried."

"Yeah. I don't think she really understood what it was we did back in Hope."

She looks at you, like she wants to say something. Then she seems to think better of it, and turns to walk away.

She stops for a minute and then turns around. "It's just.... the way your mother looked at us there. It's not something we really think about but... look at us. We're hardened combat veterans? We Pilot giant kill-bots ten times our size? It's not something that ever came up back in hope, but we're 19. Normally people our age are worrying about things like finding a first real job and moving out of their parents house. We're performing hits and pit fighting to support a bunch of refugees because our home got blown the fuck up. I'm just starting to wonder if we can even handle it. Laurie's already had two near breakdowns, I have trouble sleeping, Mooch's fucking toned down his game to the point where he can almost pass as a normal human being.... and I think it's getting you worst of all. I mean, the colonists are leaning on us for support, and we're all leaning on you to lead us. And looking at the arena fight... you're controlling it better, but you've been flying like you've got a deathwish."

I just... wish it were different. Which is why I wasn't going to say anything. I mean, what kind of a selfish bitch would I have to be to just up and walk away from this? You've had it twice as bad as me, and you haven't even wavered except maybe once. Now we're dragging other people into it. Your sister, what ever Cass' deal is, Josh's been working on sorting something out to try and get more aid in here. And apparently there's some sort of a conspiracy thing? and Super-talented mercs and assassins from all over are showing up here? I just.... sorry." She says pulling away, and then climbing into her seat.

I'm at a loss, really I am. Yes we are young and all that, yes there are enemies that are trying to kill us for reasons we can't fathom, and yes the best of the best are congregating at Vegas. The last one we may be able to use to our advantage if we need friends or it might convince who ever is after us to back off.

    Give her a hug.

You're right, we've been handed one hell of a responsibility. We didn't deserve this, no one deserves what we've been handed, but we don't have a choice. People depend on us so we shoulder the burden because we're the ones who can. If any of us slips the rest of us help them back up. It's a shitty situation that we're stuck with. We just have to square our shoulders and keep on walking.

I couldn't do this without you, you might not notice sometimes but I rely on you. The people who need help gets me out of bed in the morning, but you're the reason I am able to go home and sleep peacefully. Knowing that what I care for and everything that I protect is safe.

A humble submission for the essay contest here:

"You're right, El. It's madness, what we're doing. What's been happening. It's completely fucking mental. Some days I swear it's like God or Satan or whoever is personally out to get us.

I mean, Laurie and Dave's little episodes, Ari trying to fly combat missions, all these god damned ninjas...and Hope. Christ, I don't think a day has gone by where I haven't thought, 'Maybe if I'd done this differently, maybe Hope would still be standing. Maybe if I'd just pushed it harder, I could have saved all those people, even if it meant my life.'

And you're right. I have been flying like a damn maniac. Maybe some part of me has come a little loose; I certainly wouldn't rule it out, for me or for any of us. But I'll tell you one thing right now; I'm not going to die any time soon. Not if I have any say in it. There's plenty of fight left in me for everybody who has a problem with us to have a slice, spies and ninjas and bandits alike.

Besides, I wouldn't go and get myself killed and leave my friends and family alone. Especially not you."

Anyone know a good system for hard, crunchy, AC-like tabletop games? Battletech can't handle anything that moves faster than a tractor, and Mekton explodes into chunky bits if you look at it funny. (Also, you pay for missile ammo reload with XP. What the fucking fuck.)

Good news! AC-Guy may be releasing one At Some Point in the unspecified future!

Also, BTech mechs really aren't *that* slow. They're just slow compared to, y'know, Gundams and shit, which are absurdly mobile.

Mekton's really just awful on every level. I'm not the world's biggest BTech fan, but I like my mechs to be more mobile and smaller than your typical BattleMech, so it's a difference of opinion - and BTech does what it sets out to do quite well. Fluff and style aside, BTech is a good game.

Mekton...not so much. It doesn't so much have bad fluff as no real fluff to speak of, and the system doesn't really work for what it seems to want to do. In terms of published stuff, Armored Core-style mechs are completely cold and other Japanese-styled mechs are underrepresented, often relegated to dire supplements like Mecha Crusade or that one for Mutants & Masterminds.

    >>18881123
Let's say I wanted to run Mekton because my players are comfortable with it. Could I nail it down with houserules? Ban Burst above 2(?), and maybe Recharge 0 (or whatever the one is that lets you use it every other turn), and make the XP-buying for missiles just for buying extra shots per chance to reload?

Or just tell them to man up, and refluff Battletech?

You slowly settle into the seat next to her. After a long moment you respond.

"You're right, El. It's madness, what we're doing. What's been happening. It's completely fucking mental. Some days I swear it's like God or Satan or whoever is personally out to get us."

You make some vaguely exasperated hand gestures as you continue. "I mean, Laurie and Dave's little episodes, Ari trying to fly combat missions, all these god damned ninjas...and Hope. Christ, I don't think a day has gone by where I haven't thought, 'Maybe if I'd done this differently, maybe Hope would still be standing. Maybe if I'd just pushed it harder, I could have saved all those people, even if it meant my life.'"

You let out a deep sigh as she leans into you before you continue. "You're right. I have been flying like a damn maniac. Maybe some part of me has come a little loose; I certainly wouldn't rule it out, for me or for any of us. But I'll tell you one thing right now; I'm not going to die any time soon. Not if I have any say in it. There's plenty of fight left in me for everybody who has a problem with us to have a slice, spies and ninjas and bandits alike."

You pull one arm around her as you go on. "Besides, I wouldn't go and get myself killed and leave my friends and family alone." She looks up at you as you finish. "Especially not you."

You punctuate the rant with a kiss.

She lets out a deep sigh. "Yeah. This whole things sucks. Maybe one day, we can leave this shit behind. Right now though.... I'm just glad you're the one trying to steer all this shit and not me. I don't think I could do it."

"You also didn't think you could dance. You're a lot more capable than you give yourself credit for."

The cores pull into the hangar, and Ken's already on the phone ordering a new set of legs for Dave to be delivered. Pretty soon the whole hangar is hopping and buzzing, getting to work patching up the cores for round two.

You make sure everything is squared away, and get the team together. Mooch can do the finishing touches later. You want to take full advantage of the fact that the drinks are on somebody else. Plus, if you bring Ari along, you don't have to be the designated driver.

lolpokerdice is a mocking name for "Framewerk", the dice pool system from Cthulhutech.
The system uses d10s and success is based on either the single highest dice rolled or the sum of the highest sum of multiples of dice rolled or the sum of the highest straight of dice rolled (e.g. 4 5 6) hence the poker dice moniker.
